“This year marked 44 years for the Waikiki Roughwater Swim. The swim is noted as one of the world’s most iconic open water swimming races and drew over 1100 athletes from around the globe. The 2.384-mile (3.84 km) race took place on Labor Day and was a huge success. The men’s divison was won by Australian national open water swimming champion Rhys Mainstone from Perth. The women’s race was won by Miranda Bell. The race is held in conjunction with the seventh annual “Swim with Mike,” a college

scholarship fund for physically challenged athletes. Past scholarship recipients include Hawaii Pacific University graduate Joe Broc, Keith Kitamura of Kapaa High School and the University of Hawaii, Ann Yoshida of Mililani HS and Utah State University, as well as current student Tusi Mailo of Kahuku HS and BYU-Hawaii.
