Air transport will double worldwide by 2025

Aircraft engines can be more sustainable Aircraft engines can be more efficient and sustainable. IMPACT-II gives a helping hand By 2025, worldwide air traffic is expected to double. This is why aircraft must become greener and safer. We can only do this via innovation. Dutch companies form a strategic part of the supply chain of foreign OEMs, through the intensive cooperation between business and knowledge institutes. The Dutch aviation sector has determined five themes for technology and innovation. These themes must double the market share over the next decade and offer many points of departure for research & development. The aircraft engine manufacturing industry is a relatively young industrial sector in the Netherlands. At the start of the 1970s, the first companies entered the market. In the following years, the possibilities for Dutch companies improved considerably. Companies develop and produce complete subsystems and modules (load compressors, APUs, wiring harnesses, stationary and rotating parts. Market position Dutch companies operating in the aircraft engine manufacturing industry have set up the association Dutch Aero Engine Cluster (DAEC). The members are DutchAero, engineering firm Atkins, NLR research institute and composites

product developer and producer Airborne. DAEC was founded in 2001 in order to significantly improve the market position of the Dutch aircraft engine industry. The total turnover of the companies in the aircraft engine sector is more than ₏100 million. Together the companies have around 1,000 employees. Objective The IMPACT project aims to develop aero-engine subassemblies for more efficient and sustainable engines. The first phase of the IMPACT project (IMproved Performance through Advanced Compressor Technology) was completed in 2009. The objective was to develop the design, production and validation opportunities for individual stationary and rotating components in the high-pressure compressor. The IMPACT project played an important role for DAEC in the development of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Snecma. IMPACT-II began in 2010. Its objective is to take the next step; the development of demonstrators which will validate the DAEC’s design capabilities.
