AlphaGirls Power Up Chicago Women L

ooking at Karen Bartuch’s tall, slender frame, flowing blond hair and striking features, one might be more inclined to think supermodel than firearms specialist. However, the second she speaks, it becomes rather apparent that words like “delicate” and “pretty” are not too common in her arsenal. “I may be a buck thirty-five, but believe me, I can take down a threat,” she laughs. “My motto is be prepared for anything.” And take down threats she

has. After a decade-long career as a Chicago Police Officer, Bartuch has taken firearm and self-defense education for women to a whole new level in the formation of her organization AlphaGirls. AlphaGirls is a company that promotes female empowerment through physical, emotional and mental education in the event of an attack. It teaches its students how to operate in situations where bodily harm is a real threat, not only preparing them with physical skill in self-de-

fense, but also in mental training as well. “It may sound crazy, but being attacked can get close, ugly and slippery,” Bartuch says. “We educate people on the visceral stuff like ‘Can I pull a trigger?’ or ‘Can I stab someone’s flesh?’” It may sound violent and morbid, but this is the world that we live in. Growing up in Chicago, Bartuch knows this better than anyone and is opting to be an advocate instead of a victim. At a young age, Bartuch recalls

seeing men masturbating on the CTA trains and being followed by shady characters around stores. Instead of being threatened by these predators, Bartuch decided to make herself the threat and enrolled in the police academy. After working in law enforcement for 10 years, she amassed an education in firearms, self-defense and awareness that was unparalleled, and soon decided that it was her mission to spread this knowledge to her fellow woman. In 2009, Bartuch founded the Women’s Tactical Organization, a charity that helped to teach more tactical combat training to women in law enforcement. The training programs took off tremendously, but Bartuch noticed that this was just the tip of the iceberg. “Everyone loved it, but we had husbands, dads and brothers who wanted even more training for their women,” Bartuch

recalls. “They were worried, so we decided to keep things moving forward.” A few years later, Bartuch established AlphaGirls, which aimed education, not just at law enforcement, but at women of all walks of life. Bartuch wanted her students to be, like her, prepared for anything. Today AlphaGirls offers a variety of training programs for women, to prepare them for every aspect of an attack. Beginning with mental leadership training, the AlphaGirls tackle every subject from hand-to-hand combat, firearm handling, conceal and carry training as well as one-on-one training in any facet of self-defense. As a former police officer, Bartuch knows first-hand how physical and uncomfortable attack situations are and as a result, AlphaGirls promotes education for painfully, realistic attack scenarios.

“ We try to get people

comfortable with being uncomfortable,” Bartuch says. “We encourage students to come in every-day clothing, not athletic clothes, because what are the chances that you get attacked in your Nikes and flexible yoga pants? Pretty slim. We give women a chance to test their own skills in as realistic a situation as we can.

“My motto is be prepared for anything.

Trainings are specifically centered on disciplines that are ideal for women. The group promotes a Kung Fu discipline called Wing Chung, which is a form of fighting that is optimal for women because it does not require a tremendous amount of strength. The form relies on skeletal manipulation, a universally effective form of combat. Despite its gritty subject matter, Bartuch and her fellow AlphaGirls always work to make training and education programs as positive and beneficial as they can. Firearm training is one aspect of self-defense that has come under scrutiny lately as various

Crossfit Regional North Central 2014 By: Stella Quimby Layout: Kali Koller Photos courtesy of Brittany Lohmann of Crossfit AMRAP

This past Mother’s day weekend, instead of lounging around and pampering mama (like she deserves…daily), a group of the roughest, toughest athletes were competing at Navy Pier at the Crossfit Regional’s North Central Games. Athletes from all around the Midwest region flocked into Chicago to try to make it to the ‘elite’ Crossfit Games that are set to run on July 25.

in which my box, Crossfit AMRAP competed. This 3 day event, which started Friday May 9th , was filled WOD (workouts) challenges from morning to early evening. The individual workouts and the team workouts differentiated from one another. Both WODs were incredibly hard and difficult for the everyday Joe, not to mention an average crossfitter such as myself.

From Regional newbie’s to the established competitor such as Stacie Tovar, they competed all out to make it to the Games. There were individual competitors, men and women, Master’s men and women and lastly a team competition,

So, what did these workouts consist of? Hard and more hard….actually below is an example (taken from game.crossfit.com) which shows what the individual workouts were for those competitors.

So what were the results you may be thinking? Here are the top 5 for Individual Men, Women and Teams. (SEE RIGHT)

The top 9 from each category will move on to the Elite Games! Top athletes from across the Midwest, crazy WODs, tons of vendors and even some Paleo foods made it to the Regional’s! It was an awesome experience!!! Also good luck to all the athletes from the North Central region that will compete at the Games in Carson! We will be watching and cheering you on!!! “May the WOD be ever in your favor”, clever huh?

The Power of Music

By: Sophia Sanchez

Do you remember being a kid and daydreaming about what it would be like to be a “grown up?” The excitement behind being able to stay up as late as we wanted, not having to answer to anyone except ourselves…. and the financial freedom! “I can’t wait to buy whatever I want, whenever I want,” was an exhilarating dream we all longed for during our adolescent years. And how many of us have looked back upon those years and thought, “how foolish was I to want to grow up so quickly.” The responsibility that accompanies being an adult is something we never realize until it’s too late. And suddenly, we find ourselves longing for the days in which life was just a little less hectic. “What I wouldn’t give to be a kid again,” is a reflection often had. For a growing percentage however, childhood is a distant, and not so pleasant memory. Did you know that an estimated 20% of children in the United States [grades 9-12] reportedly have experienced bullying (according to the Regional Education Laboratory of Northwest and Islands; REL-NEI)? An estimated 40% of bullying incidents go completely

his friends and mentors; and in his junior and senior year of high school, John was sponsored by Five Colleges Consortium: Smith, Amherst, Mt. He went on to graduate from the Boston Conservatory of Music (BM) in 2010 and the Longy School of Music of Bard College (MM) in 2012. His adolescent struggles now a distant memory, today John finds himself not only a music teacher and mentor to other young, aspiring musicians, he works to inspire and empower others through music the way music helped to empower him. Through his latest project, The

John Hanifin Band, this front man is joined by four equally talented musicians [Brandon H Allen, Trevor Pitts, Louis Ochoa, and Corey Sanchez] who not only share a passion and love for music, but hope to enhance and strengthen the industry through positive change. Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, The John Hanifin Band is more than just music. And while you are sure to love their fluid sound that seems to transcend all boundaries, the positivity that exudes from all five of these young men is the quintessential factor in their success. Their ardor for music is most evident in the music they play and compose, but what makes these gentlemen so special is their gratitude and humility in being able to play in front of any

audience, no matter the size. The John Hanifin Band has played across many key venues in the greater Boston area, and through talent alone it is no surprise they’ve developed a large fan base. Through the use of social media however, John and his band have not only been able to reach a global presence by providing popular music samples through the use of Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, they’ve utilized this platform to send the powerful and inspirational message that music is not merely something to listen to, but a means for creating positive change. No matter the circumstance, whether you play an instrument, pick up a microphone or simply play your favorite album on repeat, music connects all of

us on a much deeper level. And in all of our darkest moments, music can empower us all. The John Hanifin Band was recently selected to participate in the Celebrity Series of Boston; a program that presents worldclass performing artists who inspire the Boston community. Working to enrich life experience and build better communities through the performing arts, John and the guys will not only work to transform lives through their performances on-stage, but will work one-on-one with people of all ages in schools, homes and everywhere possible to deliver their positive message through music. Just one more validation of the kind of men and musicians they’ve come to be. Music is pain, and love and

happiness. Music is everything. John learned this lesson early. And whether you are 13 years old feeling tortured by the words of your peers or 72 mourning the loss of your best friend and love in life, music has always been and will always be our common ground. The next time you feel backed into a corner with no way out, remember that you aren’t alone. Perhaps you too can find solace in music…… **The John Hanifin Band aims to create a music experience unlike any other. Girls Rock Camp By Jen Pontrelli

In a society saturated with pop culture

fixtures like the Kardashians and a myriad of starved-for-attention Hollywood starlets, today’s female youth can face quite the conundrum when looking for influence and inspiration. Girls Rock! Chicago is a local branch of an organization that is looking to help young girls see past these flimsy icons by empowering them through music. Within the duration of two one-week sessions, the Girls Rock organization hosts Chicago-area girls, aged 8 to 16, and teach them how to play instruments, form a rock band and write a song. Throughout the week, the girls participate in various workshops including music lessons as well as other, non-musical activities. At the end of the weeklong session, the girls cap off their journey by performing at a Chicago venue that

some adult local artists could only dream of and recording a song in a real music studio. Through this process, Girls Rock is becoming an organization that is making a huge difference in the lives of local young women by bringing out their inner rebel yell. The Girls Rock organization was originally founded in 2001, by a student of Portland State University who wanted to run a summer day camp centered on music. The concept was popular with Portland female youth and within just a few years, the camp gained immense popularity and took off around the country with locations opening up in New York and eventually Chicago. In 2005, Melissa Oglesby and a friend, who had been involved with an early New York-based camp, decided to get young Chicago-area girls rocking by bringing the camp to the area. The girls worked together to curate instruments and

volunteers and found a temporary home at Roosevelt University. In its first year, Girls Rock Chicago had only 17 attendants. But by the end of just one week, Oglesby knew they had started something really special.

“We had very few girls to begin with,” Oglesby said. “But by day two, our phone was ringing off the hook and I just knew this was going to be special.” That something special was just what Oglesby and her fellow organizers needed to help this innovative idea flourish. After the first year, support for the group that started with virtually nothing started pouring in. Girls Rock Chicago formed alliances with important women’s organizations all over the city such as the Chicago Women’s Health Center, Chicago Public Library and the Chicago Foundation for Women to help raise awareness and funding for the project. They were even able to call on organizers of the Pitchfork Music Festival and Guitar Center for support. “Guitar Center was great because they were focused on building stronger relationships with women,” Oglesby recalls. “They formed an alliance with us and kindly donated money and gear, which was so awesome.” Perhaps the most amazing contributions came, not in the form of money and gear, but in support and time donated to the camp by parents, school representatives and volunteers. Educators and musicians selflessly lend their time to the camp every year, with many loving it so much that they come back year after year no matter where their own lives may have taken them.

“It’s a great learning experience for them because they learn to collaborate and compromise,”

“We have a volunteer that comes in from Baltimore every year since moving there,” Oglesby remarks with a laugh. “People really came out of the woodwork. The support was amazing. They gave us a great word of mouth and really helped us grow those first couple of years.” This support was much deserved by a group that was really doing a lot to foster creativity and self-expression in a vastly underappreciated demographic, especially in an age when things like social media and selfies can do a lot to damage a fragile psyche. At camp, girls don’t have to worry about being the prettiest or having the most active social networking profile. They are there for the music. For one week, camp attendees work on learning an instrument, with no prior experience required, and will eventually perform and record an original song. Throughout the duration of the week, the girls work within their assigned bands in order to write and produce a song. Sounds daunting? With the help of some faithful volunteers and an endlessly positive environment, these girls rise to the occasion without fail. “It’s a great learning experience for them because they learn to collaborate and compromise,” Oglesby says. “Even just coming up with a band name can be tricky, but they figure it out.” Interspersed with music-based learning, the girls also foster their minds and

bodies through activities like yoga, button making, silk screening and even a t-shirt surgery activity sponsored by local clothing brand, Threadless. At the end of the week, campers present the fruits of their labor with a performance of their brand new, original song at a local venue. Early on in the history of the camp, performances were held at venues like Schuba’s. However, as attendance and popularity for the showcase grew, smaller venues could no longer accommodate the crowd that Girls Rock attracted. They have since played larger venues such as the Metro. On Sunday, the final day of camp, the newly minted bands get the opportunity to record their song in a studio. A few months later, campers and their families receive a compilation disc of the camp’s musical yield. As Girls Rock Camp continues to grow in size, organizers have looked to expand their services to a wider range of campers. A few years ago, Girls Rock began offering a Ladies Rock Camp. This camp was designed on an accelerated schedule to appeal to women aged 19 to 99 (centenarians are welcome too!). Over the course of three days, adult campers, who may or may not have prior musical experience, work similar musical workshops and lessons as the younger set to form a band and produce, perform and record an original song. Each attendee

of Ladies Rock Camp effectively fundraises for the younger girls’ camps as they supply the money needed for one camper’s summer tuition. After years of seeing ladies of all generations work through the camps, Melissa Oglesby is renewed each time she sees a camper rocking out to their own music. What started as a fun project has transformed the lives of many bright, young girls.

“We have a lot of kids come back every year, so you get to see some really special things happen,” she says. “I love it when I see repeat campers come back and show me that this is where they really fit in, this is where they’re comfortable.” In order to keep on fostering these wonderful changes in young women, Oglesby and her fellow Girls Rock Camp associates need volunteers. She stresses that whether one knows music or not, the need is always there for support in all areas of the camp. There are many opportunities for women volunteers as well as what Oglesby refers to as the “dads and dudes” group of volunteers and supporters that provide year-round help. Please check out Girls Rock Camp at www.girlsrockchicago.org for opportunities to lend a hand. This is one organization that is destined to be heard.

Enrou: Empowering Artisans Globally WRITTEN BY: SOPHIA SANCHEZ LAYOUT BY: JENNIFER M. LEZAN

Let’s face it. We all love to shop! Whether it is buying something for ourselves, our home, significant other, close friends or family, spending money is something we all indulge in on a regular basis. Like it or not, money is what makes this big world go ‘round. But what if there was a way to help empower communities from underdeveloped countries by way of our typical spending habits? How many of you men [and women especially] give in and satiate the desire for that new toy or pair of shoes at least once or twice a month? If you are going to spend the money regardless, why not put those dollars to work and help enrich the lives of others? The Artisanal trend is one that, as of recent years, has made retail headlines. Everywhere you turn, a new business has adopted the model of employing artisan workers. But what exactly does that mean? For starters, an artisan is a skilled craftsman, or woman, who specializes in making handmade items such as furniture, sculptures, clothing, jewelry, lifestyle products, tools and much more. When a company aims at supporting these workers, they are essentially creating economic and personal growth for these artisans and their communities by purchasing their products for resale. It is a business model that works because not only do we, as consumers, end up with unique

and one-of-a-kind products that no one else will have, we are also helping to empower the men and women who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to improve their quality of life. Enrou does just that! An online shop for consumers, Enrou provides an array of fashion and lifestyle products from socially conscious global brands. Derived from the idea of being “en route” towards change, Enrou helps to connect and empower people across the globe through the power of trade and storytelling. The big question is, what makes Enrou different from other similar companies? Enrou provides a platform of a multi-brand connection to consumers that allows the company to not only reach a broader range of people, but to create change and empowerment across many underdeveloped communities around the world. By providing a central hub for many socially conscious brands, Enrou seeks to generate tangible ways to make sure consumer purchases have a positive social and financial impact globally. They create the opportunity in which every purchase gives consumers the

ability to make a positive impact in the lives of the artisans who they support. “Just as a small puff of air can spread hundreds of dandelion seeds, one simple purchase from Enrou can plant the seed of sustainable development for communities around the globe. The beauty of Enrou lies within each product purchased which is accompanies by a unique story of where the product came from and the artisan who created it. Supporting a wide variety of causes and regions, you as the consumer, directly increase the standard of living for these individuals giving them a sustainable income, education and even a chance at entrepreneurship. So, the next time you decide to go shopping online, give a thought to how you can help create a better, more sustainable world, for all of us to live in and shop Enrou. We Only Reap What We So Why Not Sow On March 28, a Roots of Peace Compound in Karte Char, Kabul was attacked. This humanitarian organization replants and rebuilds mine fields in war torn areas and makes them into farmland. This is part of their “Mines to Vines” initiative. After the tragic death of Princess Diana, the landmine crisis became abundantly clear to the founder of Roots of Peace, Heidi Kühn. She was inspired to launch her own organization dedicated to helping the victims of land mine accidents by clearing the dangerous regions of mines and planting sustainable crops in their place. The Taliban used a suicide car bomb and four armed men to invade the Roots of Peace facility and hold 25 foreign residents of the guesthouse

P E A C E

hostage for several hours. After the Afghan forces intervened, the attackers were killed, but caught in the cross fire were two innocent bystanders who lost their lives, one was a sixteen year old girl, the other was a working father of three. Although no residents or staff were killed, this incident only serves to magnify the impending danger on high profile targets such as Roots of Peace. This organization has no religious affiliation; however, the Taliban made a statement saying they attacked the guesthouse because foreigners made it into a “church used to convert Afghans.” The group is used solely to rebuild communities, and in no way, threatened the native’s religious values. Despite this unfortunate event, the Roots of Peace staff and volunteers soldier on towards reaching their goal of peace and tranquility in war ravaged countries. Roots of Peace launched its first major

campaign in 2003 by restoring the grape industry in Afghanistan. The organization’s name is based on their “roots” in California’s prime grape growing territory, San Rafael. The grape vine symbolizes the peace and harvest the organization wants to bring to the countries of Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Croatia, Iraq, the Krygyz Republic, Vietnam, Isreal West Bank, and all of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. Roots of Peace uses three steps to accomplish this complex project: De-mine, Replant, and Rebuild. The first step is to de-mine. Enemies purposefully plant mines in the fertile soil to challenge the physical and mental limits of the community by monopolizing the areas they would use to grow food. This is especially true in Afghanistan, where originally the grape industry was thriving, but the Taliban incinerated the vines and mined the vineyards. For this

P E A C E

reason, it was a very specific area on which the Kühns focused. Thousands of mines needed removal, and this was an expensive process. A mere $3 is enough to insert a mine into the soil, but it costs nearly $1000 to remove it! That doesn’t include the cost of finding the mines, which usually consists of a conglomeration of several slow, pricey methods. The literal extraction of the mine is commonly done by remote controlled, flail tractors which can withstand the impact when the mine detonates; however, if the the ground is exceedingly rocky, it is done through a painstaking process of carefully digging out the mine by hand. Luckily, Roots of Peace is funded by the California wine industry, the U.S Agency for International Development, and several other public and private organizations. The second step is to replant. Agriculture is not only means of providing food, but also steady work for those in these areas. Planting crops and managing farmland is a lifestyle for the local residents in mine afflicted regions. By providing the finest imported seeds, cultivating the land, and replanting the crops, Roots of Peace helps the locals to start over. What was once a minefield can become a grape vineyard, almond crops, cherry crops, pomegranate

trees, apricot trees, and apple trees. Roots of Peace not only provides the farmers with sustainable crops, but also it helps them with business strategies to increase their income. And the last step is rebuilding which is centered around regaining stable mental and physical health for the victims of land mines. Physical, psychological, and social treatment are all applied in order to heal those harmed by the mines. Although it is growing daily, it remains a family owned, non profit organization. In 1997 Heidi launched Roots of Peace after beating cancer and realizing how precious the gift of life truly is. She was overwhelmed with inspiration by Princess Diane’s work to eradicate the destruction caused by landmines, and her death brought Heidi’s idea into a reality. The organization was created to perpetuate the influence of Princess Diana and to honor Heidi’s own gratitude for life. She made it a family endeavor by starting it in her own home, and then incorporating her entire family into the enterprise. Her daughter Kyleigh, became an active participant at age 13 when she visited

P E A C E

a Balkan minefield with he mother. In tenth grade, Kyleigh joined her mother and ABC News anchor, Cheryl Jennings to launch an initiative to construct new schools and soccer fields for Afghan children, which has since yielded six refurbished and newly constructed schools. Heidi’s son, Tucker, has worked with the organization since the beginning, but he gained a full time position in 2008. He has played an integral role in the expansion and success of their organization by managing Home Office Operations and overseeing worldwide operations. Overall, it has been a familial effort to build and maintain their organization. Since its humble beginning, Roots of Peace has succeeded in accomplishing many charitable tasks. Over one million farmers have been impacted by the planting of nearly six million trees which tripled farmer’s income and has saved

communities from starvation. Five schools were built and supported thanks to the donation of 50 million “pennies of peace.” People all over the world are eager to help support this massive undertaking, and Roots of Peace has made it so easy, all you have to do is have a smart phone! Kyleigh urges people to go on their social media sites and post an image of a flower or tree with the hashtag, #rootsofpeace. This international cyber chain of support can show how despite the hatred and evil in the world, all it takes is one seed of hope to change an otherwise devastating outcome. “I am choosing to respond with love, light and peace... and I’m asking you to join me. I stand for beauty rather than war, creation rather than destruction, and love rather than hate. Please stand with me in solidarity with the Afghan people, and all people worldwide who have suffered too long withstanding senseless acts of extreme violence. Let’s

P E A C E

stand for peace,” pleads Kyleigh. According to Heidi Kühn, “Over 100,000 landmines and UXO’s have been removed since September 11, 2001—turning seeds of terror into seeds of hope! Cancer is a landmine, and landmines are a cancer to the earth. Yet, there is a cure — removal. As a cancer survivor, I ask that you join me in this global quest for landmine removal.” So, today I implore you to join the Kühn family in their venture and plant your “seed of hope” by posting a photo of a plant using the #rootsofpeace hashtag. This simple act could make a huge difference, and the power is literally in the palm of your hand.

CULTURED SPOTLIGHT

Introducing Article22 a brand that designs accessories out of Vietnam War Bombs

FEATURING THEIR NEWEST COLLECTION:

A22.2

I know that Article22 is NOT based out of Chicago, but this concept is so unique and environmentally friendly, how could I NOT feature it on the Cultured Spotlight column here at Halfstack? Also, this accessory line also donates 10% of total profits to the Laos community AND each piece of jewelry clears 3 meters or more of the bomb-littered land; a brand with a conscious. So, what is this Article22 accessory line? They create accessories comprised of scrap bomb metal. Recently, Article22 just unleashed their 2nd collection called A22.2. This new line includes more high-end pieces finished with semi and precious metals. This line is inspired by the idea of “Ashes to Angels. The collection fuses texture and luminosity bringing light to the dark past in a modern form.

This extraordinarily unique line founded by Elizabeth Suda who is a Brooklyn-based artisan. She was inspired to create Article22 when she visited workshops in the rural community of Ban Naphia. “With Article22, we can now tell the stories of Laotian communities with a modern and original approach, creating unique objects and new forms of business with local entrepreneurs. Her goals was to create a line that gave back and made a difference. Her goals have culminated as each item sold helps to fund the growth of the community and clear the land for these people who have faced the ravage of bombs. So, what does the newest collection of Article22 consist of? It encompasses the idea of ashes, bolts and shards from war metal and features long necklaces, earrings and fine bracelets (A22.2 pieces are pictured in this article!)

Colorful names such as the Ashes Shard Collar Necklace and Bolts Bangles make up this collection. Some pieces are more casual, while others are extremely elegant. Therefore, there is a style for everyone with discerning taste. Most importantly, each item sold contributes to the company’s mission “trade not aid,” by sustaining an artisan community in Laos. Pieces in the A22.2 collection range from $95 all the way up to $850 and there is jewelry for both men and women! So, take a moment to check out Article22. When you make a purchase from this brand, you don’t only make a fashion statement, but are also giving back to a community in Laos by helping remove the bomb waste that happened

FIREARMS & FASHION SHOW RECAP PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Featuring DWIGHT BEJEC

AlphaANDGirls Nickel & Lace Written By: Jennifer Lezan Design By: Jamie Breeden

The Halfstack team had the opportunity to attend the Firearms and Fashion Show presented by: Marilyn U. Smolenski of Nickel and Lace Karen Bartuch of AlphaGirls a couple of weekends ago! The event was a great opportunity to check out local talent and get the low down on how to incorporate items of self defense into any wardrobe. Illinois has been added to the slew of states to now pass conceal and carry laws with firearms. Therefore, it makes sense that women are looking for ways to incorporate their firearms into their everyday lives including fashion. Brands such as Nickel & Lace provide women with a product that does just that. Meanwhile - organizations such as Alpha Girls have made it a point to educate women and the public on self defense tactics to keep them safe in a sometimes scary world. The evening was a mix of education in a light hearted manner, style and networking. The fashion was edgy, unique and beautifully crafted.Vendors included: 5.11 Tactical, Nickel and Lace, Blue Bird Apparel, Fermented Fruit, AlphaGirls, Artifixer, Safer USA, On Target Radio, Allilamodie, Baubles and Bags, Laughing Tulips and Sarah Church. Highlights of the evening included fashions catering to the biking community from brand: Fermented Fruit Clothing by Eli Borrowman. The line is a mix of reflective biker and cyclist wear that has a distinctive mad max feel to them. The line is handcrafted by Borrowman in Chicago and truly showcases her immense skill in high quality design and tailoring.

Another designer that truly stood out was Andrea Marcinkus of the Artifixer brand. Artifixer is a line of corset wear that takes sexy to another level. Inspired by steampunk with a raw vintage appeal, the styles showcased throughout the evening didn't fail to impress the crowd. Underbust, overbust and leather jackets as well as mens corset styles gave off a sophisticated yet domineering vibe. The line is badass and fitting of any empowered kick-ass individual. A few local favorites that also showed included: Sarah Church and Blue Bird Apparel. As usual, their casual wear, knits and gorgeous dresses were well receiver throughout the evening. Great denim pieces and casual pull overs from Blue Bird are a must try for the early days of summer. Slinky dresses that have a feminine appeal were perfect from Church and would be a great addition to your summer wardrobe.

WTF?!? An Examination of Star’s Modas

By: Stella Quimby Layout: Kali Koller

First Victim (A.K.A Star): Mickey the Mismatched Tiger/Bee Rourke

If I saw this down the street, I would be petrified that it’ll come after me… First, what the hell are you?? Are you suppose to be a bee or a tiger? Are the 80’s back? Well, the bad part of the 80’s that we all wish didn’t survive! I have to give him credit for wearing color, but in which alternate universe can one wear hot pink, hot green shorts and a bumble bee/ tiger mutant creation of a shirt together? I guess Mickey Rourke can.

3rd Star: Just out of Jail or Thrift Shop Video-Jesse McCartney 2nd Star: Halle Berry..... PLUS DIAPER!

One of the most beautiful women in the world‌wearing a designer diaper. That is what we are seeing in this picture here! Halle Berry plus a gray, wool blend designer diaper! After feeling inferior to this gorgeous leading lady for so many years, my self esteem has finally had a jump! Thanks diapers for making her look ridiculous! Word to Halle‌fire your stylist!

No crap he is grumpy, he just got let out of prison or even worse starred in the Thrift Shop video by Macklemore. Anyone seen in that get-up in public must be fighting some demons; I mean look at those boots, I wonder if he skinned them himself?

WTF?!?!

4th Star: Lady Gaga (a staple in this column)

5th Star: Is she blind or what? Formally known as Lily Cole

Oh look! Lady Gaga now comes in an oven proof getup! Did she suddenly get sponsorship from Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil? I didn’t know that they sold Reynolds Wrap in sparkly grey with nasty stringy white wigs? I wonder which pit hell is she performing in for this fire proof outfit? Let’s all just hope that this “look” doesn’t catch on like her other fabulous looks. Anyone remember the meat dress? (Insert laugh!)

WTF…nuff said. Don’t want to go into details, I need to sleep tonight.

!?!

NICKLE & LACE AND EVERYTHING NICE! By: Cheyenne Hendricks

Being a Southerner, I can appreciate the security given by a handgun snugly swaddled in a good holster, yet being a woman, it’s no easy task to find a holster which can comfortably accommodate the curves of woman’s body. The pawn shops, the rodeo, and even the gun shows don’t sell holsters especially made for women. In the south, men and women alike enjoy the sport of skeet shooting, the art of target shooting, and the safety of owning a handgun. Because of this, I am baffled at the significant lack of provisions for women’s gun use. However, Marilyn Smolenski, a pioneer in this industry, has made it her mission to reconcile this unfortunate situation by launching Nickel and Lace, an online boutique which sells holsters designed specifically for a woman. Just as one would use a rake, a tractor, or shovel, the community in which Marilyn grew up used guns as tools. Guns weren’t considered a political issue to her; they were an essential appliance used for protection, hunting, and sport. The authority figures in her life valued the benefit of having a gun; hence, they were adamant about teaching the safety precautions to be taken when using a fire arm. Once Marilyn honed the craft of shooting, she traveled to the great city of Chicago to start her new career. It didn’t take long for her to discover that the gun laws in Chicago were astronomically different than those of the South.

To recover from the culture shock, she and her husband extensively researched the regulations regarding the registration of hand guns. Despite how frustratingly expensive the process was, she wanted to follow the law and be as safe as she could, so she took a three day “Stage 1 Tactical Handgun” course where it was required to wear a holster. Not one holster she tried was fit for a woman, so they left her bruised and in pain. It was then that she knew she had to do something about this. Thus, the idea for Nickel and Lace was born. In 2011, she began reaching out to manufacturers, working on patterns, searching for fabrics, and obtaining the proper licensing to launch a 100% American made women’s line of holsters and apparel. This innovative idea has combined shapewear and protection to make a stylish new way to be safe. She utilized the slimming favorite of a bodyshaper with the safety provided by a sturdy holster, but her design isn’t made only for holsters! You can insert your ID, your phone, or credit cards in the nifty wallet insert design. She has established a new line of tee shirts and accessories to better supply women with products that they love, and make them feel beautiful. She has eliminated the compromise women have to make when they strap on some clunky, bulky man’s holster. Now you can buy products sizes 4 to 18!

For every Original Nickel and Lace holster sold, Nickel and Lace donates $1 to the Gary Sinise Foundation or Camp Blessings. The Gary Sinise Foundation is dedicated to serving our country by honoring our heroes. They offer unique programs to entertain, educate, inspire, and build communities for our veterans. Camp Blessings welcomes people age 7+ who have been diagnosed with a physical or intellectual disability to come and camp in a Christian atmosphere. Both of these charities have high moral standards which remedy matters close to Marilyn’s heart. In May, Marilyn will be hosting a fashion show which honors women’s beauty as well as comfort while sporting a stylish holster. She wants people to see the work and significance of Nickel and Lace. “Our main goal is to provide our customers with a feeling of femininity, empowerment, and style while allowing them to discreetly carry [their belongings.] The goal of our Facebook and Pinterest pages is to share safety tactics and classes as well as fashion and makeup tips. “ said Marilyn. As she works fervently to achieve her goal we can help her get there by supporting her on Facebook and Pinterest.

The days are finally getting longer and the season we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. There’s nothing quite like the summer in Chicago. School is out, the beaches are open and there’s always something to do! Everything comes alive in the city and there’s a sense of tranquility in the air. Summertime also means peeling away the layers and having fun with color and new trends! This summer you have everything from jumpers to button downs making a splash in your wardrobe. If you haven’t tried dipped into the gladiator sandal trend that’s been around the last few summers, now is the time to chime in. On the men’s side there are plenty of trends to choose from as well this season. Remember the pastels that were huge for women this spring? Well, they’ve found their way to the men’s side this summer. Shorts are going to pop up everywhere and not just your typical shorts, but printed styles that add an extra level of character to any guys’ outfit. The summer is a time to take it easy, lay back and enjoy the few months of warm weather that we get around here. We also provide complimentary styling, package pick up, and our selections are in full view to our customers. You never have to “shop blind” the way you do on other personal styling sites. HS: Summer is upon us! That means festival season! What are some of the key pieces any festivalgoer should have in their closet this season? MB: A bohemian cotton linen embroidered top by Joie. Specifically the MILIAN top! HS: What would you say are the top trends this summer that translate over to festival fashion?

HS: Some people tend to go over board during music festivals. Piling on headbands or too much fringe. With festival fashion, is less more or is MORE more? MB: Great question. I think it’s the only time you can just go overboard and not be judged about it. So as long as the accessories are not wearing YOU, more is more and can be fabulous! HS: What’s are the best shoe options/trends for festival season? MB: Booties with no more than a 3inch heel…. high top nikes, open toe booties. HS: Music festivals always seem to be a place where festivalgoers and even celebrities want to make a fashion statement. Why do you think that is? MB: It’s an opportunity for self-expression and a freeing kind of feeling where you get to live out a music groupie fantasy for a few days. It’s where anything goes fashion wise!

MB: Camo prints and floral prints are both huge this summer! Any shorts or little dresses in those two prints are a big trend this summer.

It’s an opportunity for self-expression and a freeing kind of feeling where you get to live out a music groupie fantasy for a few days.

AGAINST ALL ODDS Empowered entrepreneurs take center stage in Chicago’s fashion, business, tech and non-profit industries. PHOTOGRAPHY BY: PERRY FISH WRITTEN BY: JENNIFER M. LEZAN

Defining empowerment can be a tricky thing to do. This idea is typically defined as “to give power to.” Yet, one might agree that a better way to define this idea would be “to take back power.” No one can take your power unless you let them. Essentially, everyone has the power within themselves to make life changes, follow their dreams or accomplish something amazing if they just try. This theme has been a constant underlying factor in many of the success and inspirational stories we have shared in the past. Yet, it is most obvious within this particular group of individuals. Whether they have battled homelessness, loss of loved ones, struggled with success or tried to share a different point of view, each of these organizations and the leaders behind them have made an impact. Each of the people showcased have empowered themselves to make change happen. This idea of empowerment is the essence of their stories and journeys. Their ability to take the falls and get back up and

continue on their journey is so important to their success. It is so important to the success of any dreamer. Without mistakes how will one learn? Without experiences how can one grow? Steven Maraboli points out in his book “Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience:” “We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past. But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.” This sentiment is earth shattering to people. Why is that? The fact that we have control over the outcome of our life is a scary thought. The idea of pre-destiny is so ingrained in our minds that it can deter us from taking small risks to get big rewards. Many people ask themselves the question of, “who am I to be so deserving of success?” Yet, each of us, has within us the strength to overcome and the ability to succeed if we attempt. Every one of the

individuals showcased below is living proof that if you have dream and you take action, amazing things can and will happen.

T

amika Price truly embodies the term hustle. She is a fierce half black, half Puerto Rican woman on a mission, with big goals and lofty dreams. She has transitioned from a seasoned stylist appearing on shows such as The Rachel Ray Show to a boutique owner and she’s even penned her own book: “Standout Style”. Yet, her story has humble beginnings. Despites Tamika’s polished demeanor and fabulous personality, her life has been anything but easy and glamorous. Between 3rd grade through 8th grade Tamika along with her siblings and family faced consistent homelessness on the streets of Chicago. This created an incredibly tight knit bond between her and her sisters. They are some of her biggest fans. Yet, this experience did more than bind, it taught Tamika at a young

age about appreciation, hard work and overcoming obstacle. This experience instilled in her the work ethic that has allowed her to become a successful entrepreneur. It truly shaped her into the person she is today and due to her innate understanding of the struggles of those in need, it has always pushed her to give back to her community now as a business owner. Growing up Tamika always knew that life had bigger things in store for her. After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Tamika set out to take over the corporate HR world, but her dreams came to a halt when she was laid off. Rather than wallowing in self-pity, this go-getter continued to build up her styling clientele and portfolio that she was nurturing as a side business during her corporate days to help fulfill her inner creative voice. Her love of fashion and impeccable style allowed her to build an incredible following and set out on her own path. She never turned back. Fast forward nearly 6 years and she has

garnered national media attention, been a speaker at multiple women’s empowerment networking events, maintained a successful clientele and even released her own styling book last year- “Standout Style: The Shopping & Style Guide for Real Women.” The book is the epitome of a personal style book. Rather than following trends, Tamika preaches the idea that women should dress for their body type. In addition to her success as a stylist, Tamika has established an annual charity fashion show and expo to fight homelessness and empower women of all shapes and backgrounds. The Dangerous Curves Ahead Charity Fashion Show benefits Tamika’s non-profit A-line Foundation. The 6th annual show will be presented this September and it is the culmination of all of Tamika’s interests, passions and hard work. As Tamika continues to grow, she has realized that there was a need for her clientele and saw an opportunity to expand her brand. She recently opened the Standout Style Boutique storefront in Lakeview, a trendy Chicago neighborhood this past March. The boutique offers moderately priced clothing from local indie designers, great labels that cater to the everyday woman looking for great styles, accessories and a range of sizes that cater to petite and plus sized individuals. Due to her extensive styling background, shoppers have the opportunity to get free styling services on site to help them curate their closets. Tamika’s eye for good quality design and fit ensures her customers leave feeling put together and successful with their shopping trip. She prides herself in being honest with her customers about the products they are trying to ensure they only leave with items that they love. The journey into entrepreneurship is not always gilded in gold and Tamika points out that anyone who runs a business needs “to get used to not being comfortable.” The reality is that anyone chasing a dream must be prepared to experience situations that they are not used to. That is what allows the growth entrepreneurs need to continue to

build their brands and become better businesspeople. Tamika has embodied the empowered individual as she has maneuvered her way through ups and downs throughout her life. She never allowed her circumstances to affect her vision and goals. She plans on growing her boutique into a chain and ultimately plans to settle in San Juan, Puerto Rican – a place close to her heart. She also hopes to grow as a designer over time and bring her visions to life in order to offer them to customers. When asked what advice she would offer up and comers interested in pursuing a similar journey, she offered the following insights. ------------->

1. Find a mentor, someone who can inspire you, advise you and ultimately help you to learn to build better relationships since networking is such an important aspect of the fashion industry. 2. Be ok with working for free for a while. As scary as that seems, the reality is that in order to gain the experience necessary to grow, volunteering at fashion shows, interning with fashion brands and offering free services to build your portfolio is invaluable.

She never allowed her circumstances to affect her vision and goals.

FACTOR 75 Often, what we set out to do in our life journey is not always what we end up doing. This is quite typical of many entrepreneurs and definitely a key aspect in the story of the CEO and Founder of Factor 75, Nick Wernimont. This retired MMA fighter and marketing executive began with the idea of getting healthy for himself, but eventually found a way to help everyone around him embark on their personal journey of becoming healthy as well. Fresh out of college, Nick packed up his Ford Probe and made the trip out west. He headed to L.A. with the hopes of escaping the Midwest. His time out there consisted of surfing while exploring his options and eventually a gig with UPS as a financial broker. After a few years out west, feeling unattached to the L.A. scene, his heart ached for his home and family. He ultimately made his way back Midwest and landed in Chicago. After dabbling in the mortgage industry Nick landed what he considered his dream job in the sales of in medical devices. After nine and a half years, he moved up the ladder from sales roles to director of marketing and during this time was beginning to develop the plan for Factor 75. Health and fitness has always been an important aspect of his life. Yet, it became even more important as he began his MMA and boxing career. Training four hours a day and competing all while running a successful sales team truly pushed him to his limits. A few years into his training he began to experience his body breaking down. He wasn’t able to train the way he needed or do the things he wanted and eventually he learned this was all due to the fact that he was not feeding himself properly.

At the time, a personal trainer connected him with a chef who was available to make his meals for him and those meals were life changing. His health, stamina and energy improved dramatically and brought about a revelation for Nick. After some intense research into how nutrition can affect the body, training and mind, he realized that this was something he could passionately pursue. The goal was to bring the idea of the personal chef to the masses, but more specifically help people ensure that they are getting the required nutrition to help them perform at their prime. This situation was the cornerstone behind the development of what is now Factor 75. Factor 75 is a brand dedicated to helping its clients live life to the fullest and using nutrition as a tool to enhance their quality of life. When you eat better, you perform better and when you perform better, you can enjoy life that much more. Factor 75 is a brand that is there to help the busy professional, weekend warriors and people who don’t necessarily understand all the aspects behind eating healthy. The brand is there to fill the gap for those people who may not have the time, but want to eat healthy. The meals range in price from 10.95-12.95 depending the size and caloric intake the customer is looking for. The menu caters to all types of diets including specialized diets such as: gluten free, vegetarian, paleo and dairy free. There are typically at least 15 options at any given time to select from with new options being rotated in frequently. All meals utilize all-natural or organic produce and the meats are antibiotic and hormone free. The team prides themselves on offering quality food that is more nutrient dense than it is calorie dense, which in turns fills their clients up and fills them up for longer. As Nick and his team work together toward continuous growth, they have experienced their fair share of ups and downs. Nick, in particular, truly showcases that taking on the role of entrepreneur is no easy

task and it comes with difficulties. Yet, it is his passion and drive that continues to motivate him. He and his team have put in a lot of work over the last four years and are a testament that if you are motivated you can move mountains. Nick made a great point when highlighting success in business, “typically people hear about these overnight successes, but what they don’t always hear about is the 5 years the people behind the brand put into their craft prior to their success.” It is no easy feat starting a business and people must embrace the grind in order to keep going. He explains that, “starting a business takes a lot more guts, fortitude and work than training and stepping into a cage with another guy to fight.” His journey to entrepreneurship has been the hardest, but most fulfilling endeavor he has undertaken.

Factor 75 is currently in a phase of growth. At the time of writing this article, the brand recently signed up with a new logistics partner and moved to a state of the art kitchen, which will allow them to expand to a seven-state radius before the end of 2014 and nationwide within the next year and a half. The team is working hard to establish all systems necessary to expand and reach their economies of scale in a successful manner. Nick continues to push for success despite any roadblocks that may occur. Life has a strange way of directing people onto a path and giving them clarity in terms of what is most important. In March of 2012, Nick lost his younger brother Aaron. Aaron was an incredibly influential part of Nick’s life and this loss had a tremendous affect on Nick. Aaron’s kind nature and positive

personality truly made an impact on the people around him. It was also Aaron’s drive and ambition as a 2-time NCAAA Division III national champion wrestler that truly embodied the ethos behind Factor 75 and how performance can truly define an individual. The loss Nick faced truly put things into perspective. Rather than building a business just to profit, Nick found a mission in the passing of his brother. Just as Aaron impacted others, Nick has made it a point

to ensure his business does the same. Not just in offering a service that can improve peoples lives through their product, but also through the fund they established in Aaron’s name. The Aaron Wernimont Inspiration Fund awards a scholarship to a student each year graduating from Pocahontas Area Community High School. A portion of the profits from Factor 75 is donated to the scholarship fund to help young people succeed.

THE MARIN FOUNDATION Religion can be a tricky subject to discuss. People’s passion and sometimes distaste for it can generate heated debates. It can tear families apart and many times the flaws of man can utilize it in a way that is oppressive and defeating. Yet, the idea of faith in of itself can truly build bridges. Halfstack understands that our readers come from many different backgrounds and cultures and in no way is selecting one idea, faith or religion over another. Simply, we are showcasing an organization, doing wonderful work for the LGBTQ community in Chicago that just so-happens to have a Christian association. The Marin foundation truly establishes that their belief in Christianity is all about preaching the gospel of love and love, dear readers is something our world is in dire need of. Their mantra “Love is my orientation,” is a resounding battle cry in their crusade to help bring awareness to Chicago about the struggles many LGBTQ youth and individuals face along their journey. The Marin Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit that works to build bridges between the LGBT community and the Church through scientific research, biblical and social education, and diverse community gatherings. The organization opens up the opportunities for people of different and often opposing viewpoints. The Marin Foundation was founded by Andrew Marin, author of “Love is an Orientation” and an avid protector of LGBTQ rights in the Chicago community and nationwide. During the time of this interview, Andrew was abroad studying at St.

Michael Kimpan

Andrews and Halfstack had the opportunity to speak with Michael Kimpan, the Associate Director of The Marin Foundation. His insights and experiences truly help to establish his success leading this Chicago based organization. Michael’s journey into this calling begins with a messy story, but has culminated into a beautiful opportunity to make a difference in many people’s lives. Michael grew up in an incredibly conservative family, having attended Moody Bible Institute and fully committed to the secular teachings that surrounded him. He eventually graduated and pursued a career in the church. The cracks in the walls began to appear at one of his first positions post-college at a Church based in Michigan. Sex scandals are frequently highlighted in the media, yet it is so rare that one hits so close to home. Michael wasn’t aware, but prior to his taking on a youth pastor role, there were accusations of sexual abuse against the person who held the role before

Laura Statesir

Jason Bilbrey

him. The scandal was swept under the rug by the senior pastor and Michael discovered this atrocity due to his role as a mentor to the youth affected. It was at this moment that Michael made a decision that would forever change his life. He did what he felt was right and contacted the proper authorities, filed a report and forever changed the path of his career. Needless to say, Michael didn’t see eye to eye with the Church and he was fired for the route of action he took. It was in this trying time that the theology he developed began to falter. The things he thought to be true were not panning out as expected and ultimately he had to do some soul searching. Not much longer after losing his job, Michael found himself back in Chicago, attending graduate school at Fuller Theological Seminary and working as a Barista. He saw a tremendous amount of success during this time frame, but his relationship with his wife was slowly falling apart due to

him not working in ministry. This was an issue that they could not overcome and ultimately led to their divorce. These were some of his darkest moments and a time where he was beginning to abandon his faith. During his time slinging coffee, moving up the corporate management ladder at “The Buck” Michael developed his first friendship with an openly gay individual, Eric. Eric was the first gay man that Michael was ever close with and Michael was the first Evangelical Pastor Eric ever connected with. Needless to say, the pairing couldn’t have been any more unlikely. Yet, they each taught each other a tremendous amount in regards to their beliefs and experiences within each of their cultures and communities. Overtime, this relationship began to breakdown the false stereotypes and negative connotations that Michael had about the gay community. During his struggles, Michael eventually came to the realization that despite what he believed,

Melinda Guerra

he wanted to be able to work out those issues within a community of faith. He wanted to work in a community that could help him decide whether or not he wanted to work as a pastor and decide what kind of work to dedicate his life to. It was during this time he asked difficult questions such as, “could I be a divorced man working as a pastor?” and “What about my friends in the gay and lesbian community who were hurt by people who had the same beliefs I did?” After working in a church in Peoria for 3 years, Michael connected with Andrew Marin and shared his goals to work more closely on examining how the Evangelical Christian community could better the conversations between themselves and the gay community. It was at this point that Andrew had shared that he was interested in bringing Michael aboard as the Executive Director of his foundation while he studied abroad. This role was just the direction Michael needed as his desire to, “live out [his] faith in Jesus was in line

with the vision and mission behind The Marin Foundation,” The Marin Foundation truly works to bridge the gap between two seemingly opposing communities. When asked about the disconnect between the communities, Michael poses a great point. Typically in media we, “see a split screen type debate when religion is discussed in conjunction with being gay, there is no real engagement, no real respect or dignity given to someone who holds an opposing view point.” Creating a new category of cultural engagement in conversations of faith, sexuality and beyond is the true goal of The Marin Foundation. During our conversation, Michael highlighted that there are great books that help with this dialogue and transition including his own book, “Love Never Fails” set to release, Andrew’s published book: “Love is an Orientation” and a book by Matthew Vines called “God and the Gay Christian”. These books truly get to the heart of the responsibility that leaders, churches and pastors have within this type of conversation. These types of book help to shed light on the idea that Michael suggests that as a culture, we are addicted to wanting and finding clear-cut answers. People want to know who you are, what you believe, what your orientation is. These are all questions that lead to a biased direction on how to treat one another. Typically, as an outsider, depending on which side the person is coming from in terms of a religious standpoint. Yet, Michael highlights, “when one fully explores the gospel, Jesus engages with the so-called other, those most marginalized in society standing in solidarity with them and he crosses all kinds of religious and cultural boundaries in order to do so.” And he even points out that if one truly searches, the only people Jesus actually spoke out against were the religious elite who kept people out of their community. From this comes his belief that as a Christian, no matter if he has a more progressive or conservative opinion on sexuality, same sex marriage and other politically charged subjects, it is his duty to engage with people

in a respectful and kind manner. Ultimately, organizations such as The Marin Foundation are all about sharing and spreading the love. Rather than, attempting to make those of faith conform to a specific mold, the organization is there to help, guide and accept people as they are. Michael notes that the organization is often met with suspicion from both sides of the bridge. Due to this, the organization has adopted a “come-and-see” approach to how they interact with both the Christian and Gay communities. This has helped those questioning see first hand the amazing work they do right in the community of Boys Town including the “I’m Sorry Campaign” during Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade or the Living with Intention Workshops. Many a person has had a change of heart after experiencing such an opportunity and it is those moments that make what the team does feel so fulfilling. When they can facilitate more than just understanding, but also deep friendships, it makes the hard work worth it. To Michael, “that is the equivalent of God and Heaven occurring here on Earth.” As the Marin Foundation continues to develop and grow, the team has many plans and projects to undertake. The most recent project that the group is most excited about is “The Parent Resource Initiative.” It is a resource for conservative Christian parents of LBGTQ children that helps parents and youth work through the misunderstanding they may have. Michael states that, “for so long these relationships have been hijacked by misunderstanding on how to engage one another,” and this program provides them with the tools they need to better work together and love one another. Statistics show that LGBTQ youth are more likely to run away from home than heterosexual youth and, among youth who experience homelessness, LGBTQ youth are more likely to stay with a stranger and less likely to stay in a shelter than heterosexual youth. This information paints a scary picture, but The Marin Foundation saw an opportunity to make a change in their community and empower both parents and youth to do better, be better and love better.

JESS LIVELY A common thread woven throughout many of these stories is that of change. If there is one thing that Jess Lively of Jesslively.com is capable of, it is braving change. JFK once stated, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” In our day and age, this concept is something we must embrace. Yet, so many people become crippled with fear by it. Change can truly be empowering and Jess is a prime example of this. Jess began her career in the jewelry business. At the ripe age of 15, she started selling what she lovingly describes as, “ugly ankle bracelets at the pool one summer”. This summer business led to a full time career post college. When most of her friends were picking up corporate jobs, Jess was braving change and picking up her life to build her company in the heart of Lakeview, Chicago. Over time, she was able to develop her Jess LC brand into a profitable and growing company only to close it down after 5 years of success. Why, you ask? Well, because is inevitable and she had a true calling waiting for her. This calling was, “to help people with a book, TV show, or any other way that [she] could spread [her] message of simplifying life.” Despite icky breakups, ups and downs and a not always clear future, Jess maintained her composure and direction. While Jess grew her brand she started a blog, which led to opportunities in consulting with small business owners. In 2009, when she launched that blog it began to garner a mighty following and Jess saw the opportunity to help people immediately through the words on her blog.

In November of 2012, Jess closed up he jewelry shop and decided to pursue her budding opportunity to help people design lives and businesses with intention. In 2013, she stopped consulting to truly put her energy into her plans of continuing to develop her “with intention” site and online workshops. Despite all of these changes, many of which were intentional, Jess thrived and continued to forge on. The reality is, unlike many people, Jess realized that she may have seemed to have it all, but she didn’t want it all. She had to find balance and dialed back to just focus on the direction her instincts led her in. Jess realized her calling early on. While in college she had her “aha!” moment. She constantly struggled with her need to please others, her weight and doing what she thought was right. She was miserable. She knew there had to be some other way. Jessica quotes an excerpt from the artist Michelangelo she read years ago that highlights how Michelangelo only, “had to see the potential in the stone and remove what was covering it to reveal the beauty underneath.” In that moment, Jess realized where her stress was coming from. She spent 7 years after that moment, trying to understand what this idea meant and how to implement it in her life. The basis behind the ideals of intention is rooted in Jess’ belief that society teaches us to focus on achievements as a direct correlation to success and that leads to happiness, but she feels that it doesn’t work this way. She preaches what she calls a “value based perspective.” This means, “we have to think about what our values are in the present moment and embody those values in our every day life despite the circumstances and this ultimately leads to joy and successes.” This inherently leads to the removal of the everyday stresses and “should-haves” and “have-tos”. Rather than utilizing plans or goals as

motivators, Jess suggests that people have “optimal visions” and truly understand their values to live in the present moment and continue their momentum forward. When this is done properly, things occur naturally. Rather than trying to force something or stressing over things not happening according to a timeline, this type of thinking helps people develop in a much healthier manner and think in a different way. In conjunction to all the great opportunities Jess has uncovered this year, she continues to teach through online workshops and share her passions on living a life with intention through her podcast: The Lively Show, which can be found on Jesslively. com/livelyshow. When asked what kind of advice she could offer anyone feeling lost from a professional standpoint she had the following to say: “Our purpose in life is universal and it is to serve and help others and that in of itself will help to create fulfillment [. . .] Even if you are in a role you hate, doing what you can to serve where you are, but realizing you don’t have to stay, will make the difference in feel-

ing the fulfillment and joy. Then figuring out what is most important to you and finding a path that will allow you to serve in alignment with those values.” This approach can be applied to any situation in your life, not just business, but personal as well. That is the beauty behind it. The strength that can be generated from it is amazing and can empower people to change their lives.

counseling and shelter. Organizations such as 360 Youth Services helped me take back my power and realize that I was never alone, nor was I ever powerless. The idea of empowerment is so imperative to the growth and development of today’s youth. When I think about the word empowerment, I am reminded of the struggles of my youth. The battles I went through growing up in the inner city to a single mom, the gangs and abuse I witnessed and the strength I gained by taking control of the direction of my life. I was able to give myself power through knowledge, through hardships and by the experiences I had and the lessons I learned. That’s not to say that I

didn’t falter, I did many times, but in the end I picked myself back up and kept going. When you look up the definition of empowerment - it is usually defined as “to GIVE power”. Rather, I would like for you readers to look at it as TAKING BACK your power. You own it. It is yours to take, no one can take it from you unless you let them. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” – Growing up I had a lot to fear. I grew up in a single mother home, with a mom who as hard as she tried couldn’t shake the hardships we faced growing up. Whether it be the

gangs, violence, drugs and alcohol she attempted to leave behind in Chicago or the violent and abusive boyfriends she brought into our home growing up. As the eldest of two children, I was born into a situation that ultimately should have led me to failure. I could have become a statistic. “From their first day of kindergarten to their last day of school, Latinos, on average, perform far below most of their peers. They now constitute the largest minority group in the United States and the fastest growing segment of its school-age population. But it’s a troubling picture. Latinos are the least educated of all major ethnic groups.” Yet, even as a young girl – I have always had this inner drive and ambition to prove the naysayers and doubters wrong. I truly have always believed that I would never allow

myself to become of a victim of my circumstance. Getting a job at 14 to help my mother pay the bills, working hard through high school to graduate early and become the first in my family to finish and move on to college. Despite the fact that I would have to live in daily fear of the violence in my home, struggle through late night battles between my mother and her boyfriends and understand that police visits would be a normal thing in my life. At 17, I still had that drive yet, I was beginning to tire. I left home that year to figure it out on my own. With a full time job and my first year of college just months away – I graduated high school a semester early and forged out on my own. At 18, I brought my younger brother to live with me to escape the drama that still ensued at home. At 19, my moth-

er moved in with me. Our reversed roles had continued and my exhaustion and depression began to deepen. I continued to carry a burden and didn’t allow anyone in on my secrets. No one knew the life my family endured and this is typical of my Hispanic upbringing. We don’t talk about our problems; we don’t “air out our dirty laundry.” Yet, that is exactly what I needed when I thought the world and God had turned their back on me and when at 19 I decided I didn’t want to go on anymore. A bad breakup, constant fighting with my mother and exhaustion from carrying a burden that no 19 year old should have to – the burden of being a mother to your mother and brother, while trying to find your way in the world without true guidance. God had other plans though. A week after a stay in the ICU at Edwards hospital – I was given 2 options – complete an in-patient stay at Linden Oaks or check myself into a intensive 6 month program at Naperville Community Outreach – a place now known as 360 Youth Services. Fast forward nearly 10 years later and here I am a woman with a family of my own, a small business owner with an MBA and a college professor at 28. I still have that same drive and ambition and a mission to change the world. During my program, one of the therapists shed light on something for me. She said it was almost as if I had a lapse in judgment that fateful night that I attempted suicide because it just didn’t fit my personality profile.

She taught me that all I had to do was open up and that it was ok to feel down, it was ok to feel tired, but what the most important thing I could do with those feelings was how I decided to overcome them.

“These individuals who were lost, have truly become empowered. Offering programs such as Power of Choice and Operation Snowball help to educate students on prevention, mentor programs inspire youth and housing programs give young people the life skills they need to overcome homelessness.”

Nancy Wiersum, Development Director, began her non-profit journey working with organizations such as the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She and her husband had a profound love of music and were 2 of the inaugural members of the organizations young professionals committee. It was an amazing educational experience and opportunity in terms of fundraising and subscriptions. Her passion for philanthropy and volunteering has always been a driving force behind her life. Even as a mother with young children, Nancy found time to be of service to her community. She truly believes in the ideal that the non-profits in Naperville, truly “make up the fabric of the community”. She frequently showcases other organizations on her show Spotlight on Naperville. Her degrees in Communication and Education have helped to ensure her ability to act in an organizational leadership role, but what ultimately led her to 360 Youth Services is her connection to a woman she met on the streets of Chicago. One woman with a child, looking for a handout that was most likely passed up and ignored for years, touched Nancy to the core. This woman who experienced every barrier imaginable was the spark that led Nancy to civic duty beyond the arts. Rather, she found her calling helping those less fortunate. Nancy’s drive to help this woman educated her on the harsh realities of the issues behind the shelter system. “The very people who are supposed to be helping don’t even know the realities of homelessness.” Her experiences helping this one woman shed light on her true mission in life and pushed her to work with an organization more aligned with that calling. She made the move and contacted 360 Youth Services to see if the organization was a fit for the

direction she wanted to take. Her heart is committed to the vision of the organization and that has truly helped her help the organization succeed. Despite not having a clinical background, Nancy has immersed herself in the nuances of the services the organization offers in order to better serve the programs as well as her communities. Success has directly been related to the fact that 360 youth services understands that in order to meet the needs of the people they serve, they must focus on the mission. Ron has also established an amazing team. As a leader he trusts them and allows them to do their best work. As an organization, they showcase to their donors the work they do and the differences they are making in the lives of the individuals that they serve. They must also connect with those donors in order inspire them to offer their support. This is imperative to the success of their organization and the backbone of the passion for the mission that is so deeply rooted in each individual who is a part of this organization. Despite the success of the organization, there are difficulties that the agency faces. Competition is fierce and it is so important to truly showcase their mission and the changes that are coming from it. As is the case with many non-profit organizations, much of the money that helps to fund the services and programs that 360 Youth Services offers comes from the government. These funds can disappear so easily which can be a difficult reality to face. Political differences, changes in office and the like can cause the loss of funds in an instant. At the time of our interview, the organization had been facing the loss of funding for their girls transitional housing program for 7 months. Luckily, they recently received it back. Yet, due to this, the organization has made

it a point to focus on growing their endowment, gaining the relationships with legislators and increasing private donor funds to better serve the needs of their public without having to rely so much on government funding. Even though the organization has faced hiccups such as this, the 360 Youth Services continues to push for growth and success. Ron’s background has truly helped him to navigate the often murky political waters that surround non-profit funding in Illinois. Even when things seem rough and dismal, this group of people continues to forge on. For example, the agency is working to help people that need them the most and after a recently received approval – they are including transitional housing for youth that associate with LGBTQ identities. The people who work at 360 Youth Services do their jobs without the hopes of a thank you. They understand that the best thing they can do for the people they serve, is to allow those individuals to take ownership for the changes they make in their own lives. These individuals who were lost, have truly become empowered. Offering programs such as Power of Choice and Operation Snowball help to educate students on prevention, mentor programs inspire youth and housing programs give young people the life skills they need to overcome homelessness. Each of these services helps youth to take back the power that has always been deeply rooted in their hearts. It allows them to develop the confidence to believe that they can overcome any obstacles that they may face. Each employee who has a hand in this organization has a deep understanding of stewardship. Ron and Nancy both have faced instances in past position with organizations where ethics weren’t of the highest

value. They left those roles in order to find an organization they could believe in and where ethics were deeply set within the ideals of the people and the mission. 360 Youth Services is that place for both Ron and Nancy. Despite these negative experiences, their hearts are still in it and they have learned how to do better with an organization such as 360 Youth Services. Showing people how they are making a difference is of the utmost importance. Organizations such as 360 Youth Services need help from people like me and people like all of you readers out there. The reality is that in order to see change, we must be a part of the solution. To do that, we must be willing to offer ourselves to a mission. Nancy made an amazing point when she and I spoke. She stated that, “people intrinsically want to make a difference.” This sentiment resounded with me and I am here to tell each of you readers today that you can be a part of the change and can affect the lives of those who need your support the most. The beauty is that it isn’t just about money; it is also about the time that a volunteer can offer. Find something that inspires you and make an impact. Through hard work and persistence we can truly change the world and we must start with the children. Through education and reform we can begin to inspire at risk youth to take their destinies into their own hands. We can truly empower the youth that may feel desolate, lost and without direction. AN INTERVIEW WITH

Cheri Lindsay Her Journey of Having Vitiligo

Written by: Danielle Hazenkamp Layout: Kali Koller

Have you ever seen or met someone who makes you really think about the way you look at yourself and others? That is what Cheri Lindsay has done for me. I am sure that most of you have seen or heard her without even realizing it. Cheri shared her journey of having vitiligo on her YouTube channel. Later, she was later discovered by Dermablend and became part of their Camo confession campaign. After watching Cheri’s video, I had to find out more about her empowering story. Lucky for me, I was able to do just that

HM: Your confidence is amazing! Where does it come from? My dad, who has vitiligo and has an awesome personality, I watched him when I was growing up and seen him dealing with people that were drawn to him based on the fact that he had vitiligo. I think it had a lot to do with his personality so I adopted the same one.

HM: What is the best piece of advice you can give someone that is struggling with the way they look at themselves because of in their eyes they don’t see their natural beauty? To know that nobody is perfect and love yourself.

“I WANT TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR VITILIGO”

HM: What made you to start to use Dermablend and how did you first heard about them? When I was 19, and my vitiligo had appeared more on my face, my mom took me to the Dermablend counter at Macy’s.

HM: Why did you decide to share your journey and struggles? I wanted to educate people on Vitiligo and answer the questions that many people are afraid to ask. I also wanted to let people know that there is an alternative if you want to cover it up.

HM: How do you hope to empower more people like you to find strength in their differences? I want to raise awareness for vitiligo: What it is and how you don’t have to hide from it. I would rather have a person ask me about it than make their own assumptions. HM: When you of think of the word empowerment - what does it mean to you? Encouraging and empowerment have a lot of weight. Reaching my goals, and setting higher ones once those are reached. HM: How has Dermablend helped you to achieve more than just beauty from a skin deep point of view? I don’t use the makeup all of the time, I don’t feel the need to have to hide behind it.

nail shop for guys

HAMMER & NAILS SALON Manicures and Pedicures are not just for not women; if anything, men need them just as much, if not more, than women. However, most men wouldn’t step into a nail salon to get their nails done. That is why Michael Elliot saw a need for a male nail shop. As of right now, Hammer and Nails, the nail shop is exclusively for men. Decorated with flat screen TVs showcasing sports channels, complimentary beer and scotch, and oversized leather chairs, it’s the perfect place for men to have their nails and feet primped.

Written by: Danielle Hazenkamp Layout: Kali Koller

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO OPEN THE FIRST NAIL SHOP FOR MEN?

I was tired of feeling uncomfortable and out-of-place in traditio nal, female-centric nail salons. I knew there were a lot of men who shared my frustration. So, I decided to create a male-centric nail shop that would appeal to the men that take of their hands and feet and the men that would never step foot inside a traditional nail salon. WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR MEN TO GET THEIR NAILS AND FEET TAKEN CARE OF? It’s a matter of health and wellness. Nail fungus, dry skin, cracked cuticles are all avoidable with routine hand and foot care. WHAT BRANDS DO YOU LIKE TO USE AT HAMMER & NAILS? Spa Organics, Therabath, and our own all-natural Hammer & Nails brand. AS OF RIGHT NOW THERE IS ONLY ONE LOCATION OF HAMMER AND NAILS, DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND OUT TO MAJOR CITIES? Yes, we intend to offer franchises by year’s end and open locations in cities all over the U.S. in 2015. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND MEN USE AT HOME TO GROOM THEIR HANDS AND FEET? Fingernail clippers, a nail file, and lotion is all a man needs to keep up his manicure and or pedicure between nail salon visits. I recommend clipping and filing nails to desired length, gently pushing back cuticles with opposite thumb (before getting out of the shower), and applying lotion for added moisture.

ENTERING YOUR THIRTIES with Confidence & Grace Written By: Danielle Hazenkamp Layout: Kali Koller

The struggle of entering your 30’s is something I’m a little too familiar with, considering I just turned 30 myself. I was a little anxious turning 30 remembering being a teenager thinking that 30 was old. Now that I am 30, it doesn’t seem that old and I feel like this is just a beginning to a new chapter in my life. Many women turning this age agree with me, especially Gregorie Guillaume, a beauty contributor for the Examiner, HelloBeautiful.com, Lucky.com and Juicy Magazine. She believes that turning 30 is “coming into your own” and being more comfortable in your own skin. To feel more confident and comfortable, Gregorie has provided suggestions and tips on how to age flawlessly.

What made you want to start the brand TreLuxe?

Written by: Danielle Hazenkamp Designed by: Kali Koller

I always love learning stories behind brands and what they stand for. Brands that have great messages such as being yourself, loving yourself the way you were created and feeling confident. That is what the brand Tre Luxe is all about. Tre Luxe is a hair care brand that offers a line of products that address common problems faced by women with unique hair types. Their mission is to empower women’s approach to life with confidence and to embrace ones natural beauty from within. I love everything that this brand stands for. I was very excited when I got the opportunity to ask Cortney Sigilai, co-founder of the brand questions the brand’s mission as well as starting the brand with her husband.

There were mainly two driving factors; It started with the desire to provide my curls with better care than I could use anything that was being offered in the market at the time. I had been natural (wearing hairstyles without chemical processing) for approaching 10 years, and had tried tons of different options to give my hair the moisture, suppleness, and definition it needed. Still, I simply could not find a full line of products that met these standards and was also formulated with mostly natural ingredients. I eventually began experimenting with mixing and altering products using natural oils, extracts, and natural ingredient blends that I had researched myself. I started getting more and more compliments and questions about my hair care regimen as “going natural” became more popular, and the sincere appreciation I got upon providing my styling tips and recommendations to other women was really amazing. As I began to realize that there were many other women like myself, still looking for products that worked better than what was available in the market, and also contained high quality natural ingredients; my husband and I began to discuss this as a business idea. The second driving factor behind TréLuxe, which really caused us to start taking action, was the desire to empower women and give back in an impactful way, which we felt we could do through product sales. Due to the common struggles that women with curly hair share (especially those who’ve transitioned from perming their hair straight, to learning to wear

it curly), there’s a high degree of connectedness and camaraderie among them. We thought it would be great to use this to advance causes important to women. We incorporated the idea of routinely supporting causes that women care about, like self-esteem building, physical fitness, and financial empowerment. This was very important to us. After a long period of research, trial, and development, TrÊLuxe made its introduction in November of 2013, with a mission to help women to define their style, enhance all aspects of their lives, and inspire others

Starting your own line can be difficult what obstacles did you have to overcome?

Yes it can be challenging indeed! The first obstacle for my husband & I was learning to have a spouse for a business partner. You begin to interact on a different level- which poses new challenges- but when the energy is centered, there is a profound strength and soundness that occurs. Another obstacle that we encountered was finding reputable and knowledgeable formulators and manufacturers that were able to accommodate small businesses.

What kind of advice would you give someone starting their own business? A. There are no finish lines in entrepreneurship, only mile markers‌

so make it a point to enjoy and celebrate the small wins! B. Be careful to not make your entire world about the business‌ occasional down time and other forms of enjoyment are needed if you want to be able to maximize your creative and innovative ability during every working moment.

What keeps you going when things are tough? Hearing the stories of people who are benefitting from what we’re doing is very rewarding. That goes for everything from getting positive feedback from the growing number of customers who express how much they love our products, to seeing the non-profit

organizations we support continue advancing their missions in part because of our support. Also, it helps knowing that overcoming tough challenges often serves as valuable preparation for successfully performing at the next level.

Who do you look up to in the business? I think what is so unique about the natural hair industry is that it brings about such unity and collaboration that is it almost impossible to look up to just one person. However, if I had to limit it to one person that I look up to, I would say salon stylist and owner of Panache, Stephanie Pegues, being in the

the industry for over 15+ years, she has provided me with a wealth of insight, direction and support.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing when you first started what would it be? Cortney, timing is everything and a lack of alertness is costly.

The brand is all about empowering women to wear their hair naturally, embracing their natural texture and /curls, what empowers you? 3 simple things that empower me to continue to move forward and be my best- Faith, Family & Nature Faith and family- I continually draw strength from these areas. This helps give me the confidence to be who I am. Nature- I’m always inspired by the unique and distinctive beauty found in nature. I try to use that same type of creative energy in my approach to the business.

sin & the sexual minority Written by: Matthew Santos “Being gay is a sin, but it’s okay because we all sin.” This statement, one spoken by both opponents and advocates of LGBT issues alike, has increasingly become a thorn in my side because, aside from reinforcing prejudices, it is a reminder about how rarely people contemplate the deeper meanings behind words. All too often society blindly accepts principles, many coming from religious doctrine, to organize and to provide the meanings to phenomena that we don’t take the time to understand on our own. But a lot of words, sin being one of them, have a powerful and often negative effect on the way we view certain members of society. It is because of these far-‐reaching implications on those who are affected by the blind acceptance of certain meanings that it becomes important to ask ourselves, “why do we assume that certain behaviors are sinful, and how can a more conscious effort to judge the meaning of words empower those who are marginalized on account of those meanings being unchallenged?” Sin is usually described as a transgression of divine law. But even so, words such as divine, and god vary relative to different individuals interpretations of what they understand those concepts to encompass. Therefore it is better to understand sin in terms

COMMENTARY

The real sin is not being gay. Instead it is the hate of those who harbor fear and resentment for a minority that is merely forcing society to reevaluate the cultural norms that it is attached to. of its consequences as opposed to its connections with words that are equally difficult to define. In doing so, I have come to understand sin as an action that does harm to others, or at least done with a disregard towards another’s wellbeing. By using this definition to guide one’s actions, it becomes easy to see how certain religious cornerstones originally became configured; an example being “thou shalt not kill.” However, a whole array of other religious tenets appear rather meaningless and archaic when put to this definition and ironically seem to be used as a justification to impose harm to the minorities who might challenge those rules through their actions. I do not believe that homosexuality is a sin because if it were, there would be evidence that it causes harm. Instead there is more evidence that healthy, gay relationships strengthen society both economically and through all of the benefits one can receive from existing within a family structure. Instead, written religious objections to homosexuality belong with the string of biblical proverbs that have all been cast off as irrelevant in today’s cultural contexts. One example would be the

laws that also include the forbiddance to consume shrimp, lobster, or pork; laws that few if any people still abide by. The only harm that the wide acceptance of the LGBT community poses is the one done to society’s attachments to long-‐held cultural norms; nothing more, nothing less. The uneasiness of LGBT opposition is a feeling based on fear, the fear of change, the fear of something that is different and unknown, and the fear of receiving the same hate by being associated with this minority. The real sin is not being gay. Instead it is the hate of those who harbor fear and resentment for a minority that is merely forcing society to reevaluate the cultural norms that it is attached to. I beg the question, “how could it be less sinful to stigmatize and subject a minority and their families to unnecessary hardships for the sake of upholding a rule that is briefly mentioned in the bible and doesn’t have any relevant or discernible purpose?”

Your You Your YourYou Finding Yourself, Unlocks Purpose Written By: Reynisha Lindsay Design By: Jamie Breeden

No matter where you are in your journey of life, you have indubitably decided the persona you want to show the world. You have constructed and refined this person you have come to be. Yet, when you look in the mirror, do you see an accurate portrait of yourself? Or do you see the reflection of someone you don’t know? I often think about how much of my true self I should let others see. Should I share my real thoughts, my honest thoughts? Will people like them or even understand them? Do I want them to know who I really am? Would they really like me, if they got to know the “real” me? I believe these questions run through people’s minds every day. I think most people want to be accepted. Yet they do not want to expose themselves for fear of being rejected. It is scary to put one’s self out there and abandon all inhibitions. By doing so most people believe they are relinquishing their power. However, irony comes into play because as we are trying to be accepted, we are showing less of our true self. We become insecure. To mask our fear we become the funny one, the perfectionist, the yes man or woman and unfortunately sometimes the bully. We seek out in others what we lack in ourselves – meaning the imperfect one portrays the perfectionist, the insecure one plays the bully, etc. It is easier to put the focus on someone’s failures, bad habits, fear, and weakness then to address our own by calling attention to ourselves. It is easy to gossip about what so and so is wearing (or not wearing) or what she is doing than to admit we have the same or similar issue. We think we are in control, but in actuality we have given our power to others. Yet, if we just open up we can learn that from failures, come success – that from adversity, comes character – that from openness, comes creativity. The power comes from finding your inner self. When you know your purpose, your focus is singular. The path is clear and your spirit and mind are aligned. Now that is not to say that the way or path is easy. As we know, nothing worth having in life comes easily. We are constantly confronted with obstacles like fear. Fear can be debilitating. Fear can cause

“Our purposфul life begins when we realize who we are, why we are here and what we must do.”

Your Your

ur Your Yo Y r Y r YourYou you to give up your dream. Fear can keep you from becoming your true self. However, you must know that fear is self generated. We let it in when we doubt, worry, or procrastinate. If you understand nothing else in your life, you must understand your true self. Our purposeful life begins when we realize who we are, why we are here and what we must do. Some of us realize our purpose as children others as adults. However, when you acknowledge your purpose is not important. It is when you discover that purpose that is significant. So many people focus on the physical persona – the outside. They think if they wear the right clothes, or drive the right car or have enough money, they will be seen. They will be accepted. However, what would they be seeing? In order to be seen, you have to put yourself out there. You have to be vulnerable. I heard someone once say that vulnerability is the most accurate measure of courage. Now that does not automatically mean that everyone gets the right to know your intimate thoughts and beliefs. I am not saying be naïve. People have to earn your trust and the right to know your story – to know you. The dictionary defines vulnerability as susceptible to physical or emotional injury. Yet it is required to gain insight to your emotional self. Many call vulnerability a weakness, but as an optimist, I call it strength – a powerful tool. Reason being, it is more difficult to expose yourself to others’ judgment than it is to accept their judgment of you. To know your true self and be comfortable with it is more valuable than what anyone else thinks of you. If you believe the adage, knowledge is power. Subsequently, you must realize the more you know the intimacies of your being, the freer you become.

In today’s world, many people unknowingly give their power away by not being themselves. They do it by trying to please everyone, by trying to live by someone else’s perception of them or by (this is my favorite) putting their happiness in the hands of another. Therefore, I must spend some time on the latter. Many people think they need something or someone to make them happy. Well, that is not necessarily true. Nothing and certainly no one should have that much control over you. When you put your happiness in someone else, you will inevitably be disappointed. Reason being, people are imperfect. How can something as important as your happiness be left to a person other than you? Sure, people can add to your happiness or do things that make you feel better. Yet, they cannot be your sole reason for being happy. If they are, then you will never truly be happy. So let’s reflect on what we have discovered. First, by being afraid you are giving power to fear. Secondly, vulnerability is power. When you allow your true self to align with your spirit your purpose will become clear. Don’t give someone the power to define your happiness. Everything you need to be whole, to pursue your purpose and to live happily is within you. No one has that power but you. Wow, did you know you were that powerful? Did you know if you believe you were given a gift and that every moment should be spent on pursuing it, then you never have to be afraid? Everything you need to live a purposeful life is within you. All you have to do is look inside... and find it.

“To know your true se and be comfortable with it is more valuable than what anyone else thinks of you.”

ILLINOIS UNLIKELY JOURNEY TOCARRY AND

CONCEAL

Gunshot wounds are the leading cause of homicides in Chicago...

Written by: Jen Pontrelli Layout Design by Kate Roth

In the wake of the many national tragedies involving gun violence, there is no question that one of the most hot button issues on the table, now and forever, is gun control. Nowhere has this battle waged more freely than in our own state of Illinois. In just one year, the state of Illinois went from a complete ban on all firearms to the passage of a concealed carry law, becoming the very last state in the union to do so. It’s no wonder why Illinois has such a complicated relationship with firearms. The state has had its own share of shootings, including one particularly devastating incident at Northern Illinois University in 2008 that left 5 innocent souls dead and 21 injured. As truly terrible as this incident was, it seems that almost every state has been touched by a similar tragedy in recent years. Colorado had the tragic shootings at Columbine in 1999 and just a few years ago at an Aurora movie theater. Connecticut experienced one of the very worst of these incidents when a troubled gunman opened fire on students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School. And just recently California experienced a shooting rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara. With these tragedies happening all over the United States, how is it that Illinois came the very last of the 50 states to approve concealed carry? One has to look no further than the mean streets of Chicago, where gun violence runs rampant with the changing of the weather. Just this last Memorial Day, Chicago saw a bevy of violence resulting in 6 killed and 16 injured.

Gunshot wounds are the leading cause of homicides in Chicago, and as hard as the Chicago Police Department is working to make these statistics go away for PR purposes, it almost seems to be an unshakeable way of life, especially for those in the South Side neighborhoods of Bridgeport, Chatham, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Fuller Park, Greater Grand Crossing, South Chicago, South Deering and South Shore. The wars waged in these areas have complicated gun issues for Illinois residents and the politicians who want to see homicide numbers come down, but the issues here go much deeper than the availability of governmentpermitted gun ownership. What many detractors of Illinois concealed carry laws may not realize is that these laws are passed not as a means to endanger the public, but rather to empower the public in dangerous situations. Numerous research studies have been released to reveal that concealed carry does not actually increase gun violence in any area. In fact, it has been found to have no real profound impact on gun violence statistics at all. In 2004, a sixteen-member panel of the United States National Research council issued a report called “Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review.” The study found that, in spite of the wide range of research, no definitive pattern was noted in gun violence trends with the introduction of concealed carry laws. “For example, despite a large body of research, the committee found no credible evidence that the passage

of right-to-carry laws decreases or increases violent crime, and there is almost no empirical evidence that the more than 80 prevention programs focused on gun-related violence have had any effect on children’s behavior, knowledge, attitudes or beliefs about firearms. The committee found that the data available on these questions are too weak to support unambiguous conclusions or strong policy statements,” the study’s panel stated in 2004, and re-affirmed in 2010. Despite these studies, people in power continued to be disillusioned by gun violence that is, quite possibly unable to be regulated by the government or anyone. In April 2014, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said to WGN: “It’s just insanity that there’s such a proliferation of firearms that they’re so easy to get your hands

What many detractors of Illinois concealed carry laws may not realize is that these laws are passe d not as a means to endanger the public, but rather to empower the public in dangerous situations.

on. The studies show when there’s more restrictive gun laws, there’s less gun violence. It’s not brain surgery, it’s really really simple.”

The truth is, this issue is not simple at all, and the laws road through the Illinois political system is proof of that. On July 9, 2013, after much litigation, political wrangling, analysis of statistics and deepening resentments on both sides of the argument, Illinois became the last state to allow the concealed carry of firearms. The law came after a convoluted history of gun violence and measures of gun control.

In the late 1980s, Illinois had done all it could to limit the violence caused by handguns by banning the possession of firearms in several municipalities. Chicago required the registration of all firearms, but had a limit on handguns, which were not allowed to registered or possessed unless they were grandfathered in. Fast-forward almost 30 years to a time when innovations and complications begin majorly affecting the constitutional rights of all citizens. On June 26, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Washington, D.C.’s ban on handguns in District of Columbia v. Heller. This brought the issue back on the table, and forced municipalities like Chicago where guns were banned completely, into the political spotlight. Immediately following the Heller verdict bans in suburbs of Wilmette, Morton Grove, Evanston and Winnetka were all repealed, but the big dog still held firm. On June 28, 2010, in the case of Mc.Donald v. Chicago, the U.S. Supreme Court finally ruled that the handgun bans in Chicago and Oak Park to be unconstitutional. A few weeks later, the city of Chicago adopted an ordinance that allowed the possession of handguns granted with the obtainment of a Chicago Firearms Permit. In order to get a permit, applicants had to complete a firearms training course, pass a background check including fingerprinting and pay a $100 permit fee. On July 9, 2013, despite a veto by Governor Pat Quinn this measure was taken even further when Illinois enacted the Firearm Concealed Carry Act. This set up a system of permitting concealed carry of firearms very similar to what had been enacted in Chicago three years earlier, but being an unprecedented act for the state of Illinois, lawmakers found themselves scrambling to draft a bill with the perfect amount of restrictions and allowances. The resulting Firearm Concealed Carry Act deems that all gun owners in the state must obtain a concealed carry license through the Department of State Police. The license permits the licensee to carry a concealed loaded or unloaded handgun on his or her person or within a vehicle. Unlike the previous permit provisions, applicants are no longer required to submit fingerprints with the application, however that gives the state more time to look at the application.

With the enactment of concealed carry, Illinois has now become a “shall issue,” as opposed to a “may issue” state. This means that the state has stricter restrictions on its own permit approval process. The Department “shall issue” a license to any applicant who meets the statutory qualifications. Barring any psychological or otherwise concerning factors, Illinois residents are now privy to the right to bear arms. This act has prompted the initiation of a number of training programs throughout the state, with women being a large demographic. In order to satisfy training requirements, an applicant must complete 16 hours of training with an approved firearms instructor. These courses must cover the basics of firearm safety; marksmanship; care, cleaning, loading and unloading; state and federal laws relating to ownership; storage, carry and transportation of a firearm and the lawful interaction with law enforcement while transporting or carrying a concealed firearm. Responsibility is ultimately the name of the game

when it comes to the new gun ownership laws in Illinois. There are a number of sensitive places where concealed carry is strictly prohibited including schools or child care facilities, government buildings, courts, correctional facilities, hospitals, mental health facilities, nursing homes, public transportation, establishments where more than 50 percent of sales are from alcohol, public gatherings or special events, locations that have been issued special liquor licenses and many more. While these laws are a big win for the residents of Illinois in the fight to take back our rights and liberties, a very separate issue of gun violence still weighs heavy on those with an eye to the South and West Sides of Chicago. As the concealed carry law advances and the public begins to understand more about responsible gun ownership, the hope is to ultimately understand what is going on in these pockets of our home state and to figure out a way to help and empower these individuals with knowledge and information, not weapons of mass destruction.

Conciously Eating with Nature’s Choice

A Q&A WITH LOCAL FARMERS: ERIC & SAMANTHA SEXTON Layout & written by: Jennifer M. Lezan Photography by: Dwight Bejec

Nature’s Choice Farm is a local family-owned farm based out of Grant Park, Illinois. Two people with a whole lot of heart, who genuinely believe in trying to make a difference in the farming industry, run this gem hidden just outside of the city. The farm and people behind it are known for being committed to raising animals in a healthy environment and to producing quality, pasture raised and grass-fed beef, lamb and poultry for the people of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Halfstack recently had the opportunity to visit the farm to get a peek into what they are doing to offer people a better way to eat. Samantha and Eric Sexton took some time to answer questions during our visit and give us insight to what they are doing and why. Read on for more: 1. Can you tell me a bit about your journey into farming and why you have developed the Nature’s Choice brand as you have? Eric and I were living in downtown Crete, IL . Eric had previously worked on a farm that his dad invested in and wanted to start his own farm. Eric was not raised on a farm. So, he attended several conferences on grass farming and pasture management. We wanted to raise healthy animals in a humane environment and offer the Chicagoland area a reliable source for grass-fed and pasture raised meats and eggs. The name Nature’s Choice Farm was founded based on the premise that we were raising animals the way nature intended, in the open air and on fresh pasture. 2. Can you tell me more about your prod-

uct and what helps you standout from your competition? Eric and I pride ourselves on our strict farming standards and customer service. We do not cut corners and provide plenty of fresh pasture and space for all our livestock. Our cattle and lamb are 100% grass-fed. Pork, chicken, and turkey are pasture raised and their feed is non-GMO (trucked in 8 tons at a time from Central Illinois.) Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are not used on our pastures and chickens are used for fly control. Eric and I respect other farmers and don’t view them as competition, but do feel that we stand out because we view our customers and CSA members as friends and family. We do our best to get to know everyone and are honored that they chose our farm to raise food for their families. 3. Running your own business can be tough, have you faced many obstacles during your journey and if so, how have you overcome them? We were not handed land from family. So, Eric and I started from nothing. We bought land and lived in a run down trailer for three years until we were able to build a home and start a family. Farming has a lot of start up cost and therefore Eric has worked as a carpenter and continues to do so. We hope he will be able to farm full time in the next year. The biggest obstacle has

been the amount of time and money it takes run the farm. It is very time consuming and expensive to raise animals this way. Grassfed cattle take considerably longer than corn fed and require plenty of pasture to finish. The weather plays a big part in the production of all livestock and there is less control on rate of gain than conventional farms.

still teach at night at a local community college because it is a part of who I am. Eric is truly gifted as a builder, but his true passion is farming and hopes to make that his full time job.

Our customers understand this and are willing to pay a little more for quality, locally raised food. Once in a while we get a comment on the prices and I just chuckle to myself. The reality is that Eric drives a truck with over 240,000 miles on it and works a second job! We farm because we are passionate about it, not because it is a big money maker.

Our customers. Believe it or not! Farmers Markets and CSA Pick ups give us our daily affirmation! So many customers have thanked us and tell us how much we are appreciated. On Sundays at the Frankfort Farmers market, we look out and see a line of happy people waiting to purchase our meats and eggs with such gratitude. Without that, I think we would burn out.

Creating the CSA, maximizing marketing tools, and participating in farmers markets is the other side of the farming and I have had to balance raising kids and running a business. However, it as allowed me to be an at-home mom, which we are forever grateful!

7. What does empowerment mean to you as a farmer?

4. Have there been any moments that have made your particularly proud about owning your own business and the kind of work you do? We are a three-time recipient of the Frontera Farmers Foundation grant program. Thanks to Rick Bayless and his foundation, we were recepients of three $12,000 grants in which we purchased a walk-in freezer, chore tractor, and put up a building to house a future on-farm storefront. We felt proud that this foundation felt we were worthy of these grants and invested their money in our cause. The Frontera Farmers Foundation helps many small farms and played an integral part of our success. 5. Did you ever imagine that this would be the kind of work you would do or did you initially start off with different plans for your future in your youth? No, we had different careers prior to farming. Eric has worked construction most of his life and I have a Masters in Education. I

6. What motivates you to run your business and keep going day in and day out?

Empowerment as a small farmer means to be able to provide your family and community with healthy food. 8. Can you share with us a bit about why you chose to raise animals in the environment that you do and how that affects the food we eat? Animals that are raised outside on fresh pasture (not just dirt) are happy and healthy. There is no need for antibiotic regimens or hormone implants. The meats from grass-fed and pasture raised animals have shown to be higher in Omega 3 Fatty Acids like in fish and can contain higher levels of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), a natural cancer fighter. Eggs laid by pasture-raised hens have been found to be higher in Vitamin A, Beta Carotene, Omega- 3’s and lower in cholesterol. At Nature’s Choice Farm, we are also non-GMO which means we do not use genetically modified organisms in any of our feeds. 9. Are there any harsh realities about farming that people should know about? And are you trying to make a difference in your industry? If so, how? You have to love it. Farmers work long

days, don’t take vacations, and miss a lot of time with their families. There are no holidays in farming. We have presented to a few groups about grass farming and raising animals naturally. Our farm sells directly to the customer creating a relationship between consumer and farmer. Knowing who is raising your food and how they are raising it can only positively impact your health and that of your family.

10. Can you tell us the difference between pasture raised, non pasture raised and grass fed as well as the importance in terms of the feed we eat? How can this effect us and the animals we eat? Pasture raised means the animals spend the growing season (spring fall) on fresh pasture. Grass-fed /grass finished means the animal was 100% grass and no grains. Only beef and lamb can be grass fed because they are ruminant animals. Pork and Poultry are pasture raised and do eat grain. Our grain is non GMO and free from antibiotics and hormones. Grass and Pasture raised animals have shown to be higher in a omega 3 fatty acids and CLA’s ( an natural cancer fighter). Eggs from pasture raised hens can be lower in cholesterol and higher in Beta Carotene and vitamin A. 11. Finally, where can we learn more about you, what you offer and locations that you serve? People interested in our farm can visit our website: www.natureschoicefarm.com or Facebook: www.facebook.com/Natureschoicefarm1 We serve Chicago, Frankfort, Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Naperville, Plainfield, and the Kankakee area.
