editor’s letter

It is amazing to me how far this little magazine has come over the course of a year. I always say it - we’ve seen ups and downs, but we’ve faced the hardships and heartaches like old pros. Kate, Mar and I are always working to push ourselves to see the positives no matter how many negatives may be in our faces. We started this with a dream, some hope and ton of ambition. Our goal was to share our love of this beautiful city and help bring some attention to all the amazing artists we have here in Chicago. Now, one year later, we are still making this dream come alive.

JENNIFER M. LEZAN - EDITOR IN CHIEF & HER YOUNGEST DAUGHTER SOPHIA

Along the way we have met an amazing set of talented people and have grown our team. We’ve lost some, gained some and have a few lifetimers with amazing writing skills. Our team is the backbone of this independant endeavor. Without our writers, copy editors, designers and all around creative geniuses, our pages would be blank. This issue, we celebrate our 1 year anniversary here at Halfstack. It’s a dream come true to see our work reaching overseas and all over the states. Yea, we may be repping Chicago, but our material spans all cities and cultures.

This issue is the culmination of what hard work, dedication and talent can do. By far, this is one of the best issues we have released yet and it is a testament of what is to come in our future. The “Into the Rabbit Hole” editorial truly shows off the talent of my co-founders Kate and Mar as well as the extreme ability of our photographer Stephanie Battista. It brought tears to my eyes to see the final images that came of this shoot. It was a cold day and we all froze, but we did it willingly for the love of our art. Designer Horacio Nieto’s beautiful Spring line is showcased in stark contrast against the natural backdrop we chose for this last shoot. We were beyond honored to work with such a well known Chicago Latino talent. We are also so excited to continue to do what we set out to do. Bring newcomers to the attention of our readers. Rendevouz is one band you don’t want to miss out on. Not only are they talented, they are 2 handsome young studs! They were a blast to shoot with and brought the always needed humor to our long day of shooting. So, this issue I dedicate to all of you out there who have helped to make this happen. The dreamers, the writers, the artists, our teams and most importantly the readers. Without, all of you, we’d be nowhere, but with you we are here. I always tell myself, “anything can happen”. That’s the beauty in this world, isn’t it?

The

SKIN survival guide

By: DANIELLE PULAK LAYOUT BY: JENNIFER LEZAN

With Chicago known to have very harsh winters it is very important that women and men take extra care of their skin. Winter weather can cause your skin to become chapped and irritated as well as dry and red. And who wants that?! Winter weather effects all skin types, so just because you have oily skin, doesn’t mean that the winter can’t turn your skin into dry, red and irritated skin. Believe me it can and will. Another thing you have to keep in mind during the winter is to wear sunscreen. Don’t think that just because it is cold outside that you don’t need to protect yourself from the sun. You do, so be sure to wear sunscreen daily. Most men think they are macho and that they don’t have to wear sunscreen or take any type of precautions. When it comes to skin, there is no difference between men and women. Therefore, men should take care of their skin just as well as women do. The best way to achieve this is to create an easy daily routine and stick with it to beat the nasty cold winter weather.

Women •Be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. •If you have really dry skin, wash your face at night with your regular cleanser and then use a face wipe in the morning. •Wear SPF daily, whether it is contained in your moisturizer or makeup, just wear it. •Make sure to keep hand lotion in your bag and use it as needed.

10

Halfstackmag.com

Men •For very dry skin patches, apply Vaseline on needed areas before bed. •If outside for a long period, make sure to wear insulated gloves to prevent hands from getting chapped. For even better results, apply hand lotion before putting on the gloves. •Before shaving your face, make sure that you exfoliate and after condition after shaving your face. •Wear a daily moisturizer that contains SPF.

hether you are single or taken on Valentine’s Day, you should put a little more effort than usual in your appearance. Ladies if you are single, this is the night to get yourself all done up, go out with your friends and flirt you butt off. Who knows maybe you will even get stuck by cupid’s arrow. Now for the taken girls, there is always some enjoyment getting all prettied up for your significant other. I mean this is the day to celebrate the love you have for your significant other. Don’t worry if you feel you are makeup challenged, these looks are easy to do and can be pulled off by just about everyone.

Apply your favorite eye primer. Make sure to always apply eye primer for achieving a longer wear. Take Foxy and apply it to your lid up to your crease. Then with a crease/tapered brush apply Naked 2 to your crease and into the outer corner. For your outer corner take a rounded/dome shadow brush and apply Faint to the outer corners. Next I always like to take a clean blending brush and blend all the shadows in well. When it comes to applying eyeliner, always go slow. Also with this look, you can do what ever type of liner style you want. I usually apply my liner thicker when I wearing this look. Apply 2-3 Coats of Benefits They’re Real Mascara, this will give you the false lash look with out the hassle of applying fake lashes. Now you can apply your foundation, powder, and blush. To finish off the look take the lip pencil and start with lining around your lips and then filling in lips. It is always best when wearing bright colored lipstick to apply a liner first since wearing such a bright color can “bleed” and who wants that. Top off this look with M.A.C. Russian Red Lipstick.

Apply your favorite eyeshadow primer. Next apply Satin Taupe to your lid up to your crease line. Take a tapered brush and apply Eternal Black to the outer corner and partial up into your crease. Then take a clean blending brush and blend the colors together. You want to make sure that you blend enough so that there is no seam between the two colors. Next take the eyeliner and apply a line along the top lash line. Also apply this liner to the inner rim of your bottom lid. Then take an angled eyeliner brush and smudge Eternal Black along your top and bottom lid to create an extra sultry look. Apply 2-3 coats of Diorshow Mascara. Apply your foundation, powder and blush as usual. Finish off this look with M.A.C. Faux Lipstick.

ith the holidays gone, it is time to refocus on spoiling yourself. And when I say spoiling I don’t mean doing something that is going to break the bank. It is all about Doing It Yourself. For example, I know I enjoy going and getting my nails done and receiving facials but sometimes the bank or time won’t allow me to do so. That is why I am going to guide you on how to give yourself an at home facial and pedicure. Two things that we shouldn’t neglect over the winter are our faces and our feet.

FACIAL:

The first step in a facial is to cleanse the face. You want to make sure that you get any makeup that you might be wearing completely off. What I recommend is washing your face with Olay Total Effects Blemish Control Acne Cleanser. Use a makeup remover on your eyes if needed. After your face is squeaky clean it is time to open your pores up. Simply fill a large bowl with very hot, steamy water. For about 5-10 minutes place your face over the steam. It is best done if you place a towel over your head so that the water stays hot longer. Now that your pores are open it is time to apply a face mask. I recommend using Origins Clear Improvement™ Active Charcoal Mask To Clear Pores if you are trying to clear up blemishes and pores. If you are looking to brighten, tighten and smooth out your skin, try Murad Environmental Shield Intensive-C Radiance Peel. After you have removed your facial mask, it is during this time at a Spa that they will extract any blemishes or blackheads. There are tools out there that allow you do this at home. What you can use is a 3-in-1 Extractor. I highly recommend using the extractor only on blemishes/pimples. Extracting the wrong way can cause scarring. To get rid of blackheads, I highly recommend using Biore Pore Strips. Finally it is time to apply face moisturizer. Your regular face moisturizer is fine to use. However if you are looking for a new moisturizer I recommend using Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer SPF 15 Normal. This moisturizer also comes in different formulas to cater to 16 Halfstackmag.com different skin types.

PEDICURE:

Before starting a pedicure, remove all polish. Don’t worry about those pesky cuticles. The polish will come off as you perform the pedicure. After you have removed most of the polish it is time to soak your feet. I recommend adding True Blue Spa: Effervescent Foot to warm-hot water in a foot bath or any household item that is big enough to soak your feet in. If needed soak them in your bath tub. Make sure to let your feet soak for about 10-15 minutes. Then take one foot out and dry off. Proceed with trimming or filing your nails for your desired look. Next soften your cuticles with Be Natural Cuticle Remover. Follow the directions on the bottle for timing. Then take Ulta Professional Cuticle Pusher and push all of your cuticles down and trim if needed. Proceed to do this with the other foot. Next apply Be Natural Callus Eliminator. Follow the directions by allowing this to sit on applied areas for 3-5 minutes. Then scrub off with Mr. Pumice Two Sided Ultimate Pumice Bar. Massage feet with lotion. I recommend using True Blue Spa: Spa-Strength Callus Treatment. For best results use this daily to maintain your pedicure. Now it is time to paint your nails. Just be sure to use a base coat, apply 2 coats of polish and top off with a top coat.

Haircuts for Guys Written By: Danielle Pulak Designed By: Brittany Jorgensen A haircut to flatter the shape of your face? Typically, that’s something only women worry about. But men need not get off so easily. This applies to you too! Getting the right haircut can make such a difference in your appearance. Be sure to go somewhere you trust. If you have a hair dresser you’ve been using for years, then fabulous but if not, be sure to do your research so you don’t end up with a haircut you don’t like! The most important thing in deciding a haircut is deciding which shape works best for your face. For example, you are not going to want a haircut that is going to make your face appear rounder or longer.

Haircut Styles: Ivy League - This is a very classic and professional haircut. This haircut can be worn on most face shapes. In order to style this cut you must use pomade. Try American Crew Fiber. Shaggy - This haircut is for the type of guy that makes a statement and isn’t worried about a little upkeep. This cut needs to be well maintained and cut every 6-8 weeks depending on how long you like to wear your hair. The best product to use to style is a good styling gel. Try American Crew Light Hold Styling Gel. Buzz Cut – This is perfect for men who have oval and round faces. It is also the one haircut that never goes out of style. The best thing about this cut is that it is low maintenance, therefore no styling required. Faux Hawk - This is a popular hairstyle nowadays that can be worn on any man at any age. To style make sure to use a molding paste and hair spray. Try Redken Work Hard Molding Paste & TRESemme Two Freeze Hold Hair Spray. Caesar Cut – This is a cut that looks great on all faces and can be modified to suit your style. The best type of styling products for this cut is mousse and pomade. Try TRESemme Mousse Extra Hold & Redken Polish Up Pomade.

If you don’t own one already, the most versatile item a guy can have in their closet is a well fitting sports coat or blazer. It’s an investment piece that can be dressed up or down and worn over and over again – so it’s worth a bit higher price point. They don’t need an occasion and can make any outfit look more put together. Keep in mind that a sports coat or blazer is not a suit and they are not meant to be worn like one. So, play around and be brave. Let that GQ style shine through by incorporating color or patterns into your colored shirts or layering a sweater and tie over that button up to add visual interest.

Interview with Rendezvous By Kate Roth Where did the name RENDEZVOUS come from? Ricky: Well, Leo actually had gone on a family vacation to Memphis and ate at a rib place named The Rendezvous. We were thinking of a name that would be a little more unique, and decided that this name fit perfectly for us. Leo: Yep, Ricky pretty much nailed it on the head. The Rendezvous is an awesome place to eat in some back alley of Memphis. They put a lot of paprika on their ribs, that’s all I can remember. Thus, The Rendezvous came to life. How would you describe your music? Ricky: I would describe our music as anything other than the typical acoustic band. We like to mix the styles of our favorite artists into something different. We both bring a different vibe to the table if you ask me. If I could use one word in particular to describe The Rendezvous, it would be eccentric. Leo: I think we both bring our own elements. I can’t really describe in words but we seem to tap into this weird, deep, and heavily dramatic state of mind when we write and let it spill out through our voice and on our guitars. What are the instruments that you guys play? Ricky: We both play a number of instruments. I usually just stick to singing, but I do play guitar and drums as well. Leo: Rick does 95% of the singing, as he should, the man’s got pipes. I just stick with guitar and piano, I stopped playing drums a long while ago. What are some bands that musically inspire you guys? Leo: I bet you any money Ricky says Chris Brown. Any sum of money you want. Anyways, my number one guy will always be John Mayer. The man has a

30

beautiful voice and is so fluid on guitar; ah I can’t even explain it. I take inspiration from a lot of incredible musicians because it pushes me to learn that technique or be able to write like that, I want to be better. I can never stop learning. Ricky: Oh man. Artist wise I listen to a lot of Michael Buble, Rob Thomas, and I can’t go a day without listening to my man Chris Brown. Aside from them I listen to a lot of heavier bands like Memphis May Fire, Conditions, Life on Repeat, and Issues. What attracted you two to each other? How did you meet? Leo: I hated Ricky in high school. I don’t know what he’s going to say but we were in opposing bands and I wanted to smack him in the mouth. But I don’t know how or why but after I had graduated he asked me to join some new band he started, did that, then it broke up, and then we decided we were just going to be best buds and write some sick nasty jams, yadig? Ricky: The man is beautiful, come on. On a serious note? We had played in separate bands all throughout high school and I have to say that I always loved the way the kid wrote and played music. Eventually after years of being in separate bands, I asked him to join my old band Case of Emergency. From then on we had decided we would write together no matter what. Case of Emergency had unfortunately decided to call it quits. However, during the process of the breakup me and Leo had formed the Rendezvous and continued to write music from then on. What are some of your goals for the dynamic duo? Ricky: We love playing music. It is such a deep passion we both hold. If our music were to take us somewhere I would be eternally grateful. That being said, this music industry is tough to make it in nowadays, so wherever our music takes us we will be happy with. Leo: I don’t even know. I would love for music to dictate my life, so if this ever becomes something then so be

it, I’ll be ecstatic and I’ll be living my dream. But I know how tough it is especially in this day and age, we live in a world where good musicians are lost in a sea of mediocrity. So whatever happens, I’m okay with, as long as I’m still writing music with my man Ricky, I think I’ll be fine with the outcome. What else do you guys do on the side, apart from making sweet music together? Ricky: Well, we both work currently work and Leo is currently in school. I had to take the semester off due to some personal issues, but I plan to get right back at it this summer. I am an aspiring firefighter, and Leo is going to be a boring history teacher. lol Leo: Yes, as Ricky said I’m going to be a boring old history teacher. Whatever, I can’t believe ANY school will let me be one of their teachers. Are they out of their mind? Have they not seen me? I’m insane. On that note, I would love to have me as a teacher, like, we’re going to have too much fun and I’m going to become the greatest teacher there ever was. If I ever get a job in this terrible market. Leo, I know that I am your muse, but Ricky do you have a special someone who inspires you? -its ok if you say me tooRicky: I mean, I guess you can consider yourself a muse of mine as well. Aside from you gain a lot of inspiration from the band The Dangerous Summer. The lead singers writing style is something I have always admired. His lyrics are always just perfectly on point. He steals the words right out of my mouth sometimes. Leo: Aside from you? None other than my grandfather, without whom, I would not be playing guitar today. He’s the sole reason I have the ability to do what I do today and patience to keep moving on with it. But with that said, there’s always an individual on my mind whenever I write, almost as if they’re my permanent subject. Let’s bring you two back to your childhood. What was your first experience with music like? What song do you remember most as a young lad?

Ricky: I remember it like it was yesterday. My grandfather was big on playing his accordion. I always thought it was the most impossible looking instrument lol. I played trumpet all throughout middle school and would always rehearse with my grandfather. I have the exact image of this happening very often. I would sit at the dining room table with my grandfather sitting on the living room coffee table accordion in lap. I remember him teaching me one of his originals and that became one of my all time favorite songs to play along with on my trumpet. These were some of my first experiences with music. Loved every minute of it and if I could go back, I would in a heartbeat. Leo: Well I grew up in a house full of Italians off the boat so I grew up listening to horrible Euro trash house music. Don’t even ask me how I broke away so cleanly and miraculously from that nonsense. No, I’ll just always remember my grandfather playing the accordion and the guitar and I would kind of just stare at him, mouth agape, in complete awe. I’ll never forget any of the times I stopped what I was doing to just sit and watch him play. He was the jam and boy do I miss that. Do you have any advice for young dreamers who are just starting out? Leo: Never ever ever in a million years ever ever stop playing music. It can be the most frustrating thing and it can be the most rewarding, music is a bi-polar girlfriend that you must learn to tame and live with because in the end, she’s a beautiful thing and you remembered why you started up with her in the first place. Just don’t ever stop because you’ll never know what could’ve been. Ricky: Don’t stop playing. Music doesn’t have to be just a hobby. It can be an outlet, a dream, or something even bigger. If you EVER put down the instrument, just remember to pick it back up. Where can our readers find your music? Ricky: You can find a few songs on Youtube as well as our facebook music page Leo: KATE. I’M GOING TO MAKE A BANDCAMP AND SEND YOU THE LINK SO EVERYONE CAN DOWNLOAD OUR SHITTY MUSIC. K? KSWEET.

Streetlight manifesto Written by Jerome Thomas

I

always watched Pokemon and wondered what it would be like to be in a Poke’ball. Now I know! Streetlight Manifesto is a group of seven guys with seven different musical backgrounds and seven different personalities. They are one band with a unique and unmistakable voice. The band was formed years ago in New Jersey. I had a chance to see Streetlight Manifesto live at the HOUSE OF BLUES downtown Chicago. Shout out to Anna Stodart of Golightly Media for setting up this meeting. I got there early and was still late because the fans were there SUPER early. The crowd was all ages. A couple of 11 year olds were dancing in the balcony, teens, some serious rockers, adults and then of course myself. The opening act was HOSTAGE CALM – a rock/punk band from Connecticut. They did the “set them up and knock them down” move. HOSTAGE CALM had everybody on their feet. After the opening act, fans began getting ready for Streetlight Manifesto. Fans had jackets, vests, and homemade t-shirts to show their support. Then the lights went low, I downed my beer (YEA!) and it started. Synergy! Synergy is the force of two things working together to produce a result greater than the sum of their individual effects. You take awesome fans and an awesome band and that is what you have. We left Chicago in a rocket ship and rocked out on MARS. Streetlight Manifesto played their track “Watch It Crash” and the crowd surfing began. People started taking their shirts off and for that moment they were all free. The bands mix of tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet, and drums (of course), give the band a signature sound all their own. The music and setting was a wonder mix for the night. I went home knowing I had seen history being made. They just released their album “The Hands That Theive,” in January. If you want happy ears, check out Streetlight Manifesto!

s we all know, music is alive and breathing everywhere. The music market is open for the taking. Due to the media technology we have, you can listen to music from anywhere. The West coast is bringing in new blood with old swag. We have Chicago rappers getting signedby record labels every day. Which we like. The underground scene is krazy. New mix tapes, features, and new style are changing history as you read this. So what will you see in the following year? Chicago’s own Chief Keef and Glory Boys Entertainment bring in Chi-town rap music to the front of the music industry. Remember the old boy band genre of the 90’s?! They’re back. The Wanted, anEnglish-Irish boy band so huge overseas, they just had to bring their music to the US. Andlet’s not forget about the lady bands! Destiny’s Child is back! Bey, Kelly, and Michelle will be dropping an album called “Love Songs”.Stooshe is an English girl group from London, they bring a style of sexiness and flair to compliment their wild side. Let’s now forget about country music just because it’s winter and cold. Two Lanes of Freedom is the twelfth studio album by American country music singer Tim McGraw. He has features from Keith Urban and Taylor Swift. Since indie alternative rock is already large, I believe the fan base will bring more newcomers like The Joy Formidable. Their new album “Wolf’s Law” will be some true home-grown indie rock. New year, new music, and new style.

THE CULTURE SPOTLIGHT

CHICAGO AUTHOR’S STYLING BOOK

TAMIKA MARIA PRICE

WRITTEN BY: STELLA QUIMBY LAYOUT BY: JENNIFER M. LEZAN Half Stack: Hello Tamika, we know that you are a very inspired and motivational person; so tell us a little about your background and how that inspired you to get where you are today? Tamika: I’ve been in love with style as long as I could remember. I would study fashion spreads in magazines and admired my mother’s eclectic wardrobe. As a child, my family experienced financial hardships which led to homelessness, so my desire for all things stylish had to take a backseat. That experience made me appreciate fashion even more and taught me how to create stylish looks on a tiny budget. I constantly was complimented on my style by family, friends and others. After graduating college with a degree in Communications, I worked at two places before I realized that I truly wanted to be a personal stylist. It would allow me to empower and renew the confidence of women by teaching them what styles work best for them and making shopping and getting dressed a more fun and enjoyable experience. That is what I’ve been doing since 2008 with my styling consultancy, A-line Style Services (www.alinechicago.com).

woman that wants to develop her personal style without sacrificing comfort. She loves fashion and style but isn’t 100% aware of what styles, colors and trends best suit her. All types of women can take plenty away from Standout Style, whether she is a stay at home mom or an upper-level professional. HS: Any future books in the making? T: Not at the moment, but I never thought I’d write this book, so you never know!! HS: Why should everyone read your book?? T: It’s informational, entertaining and an easy read. It’s also small enough to toss into your handbag and use as a guide when shopping. Women that have read the book tell me they always refer to it when shopping or putting looks together, which is exactly what I wanted. HS: What are your future plans? T: I’d love to expand more into working with organizations to offer employees style/image workshops as well as being their in-house stylist. Also, I have been doing tons of speaking engagements and in-store events with retailers, which I love, so I plan on focusing on booking more of those in 2013. I also just launched my business-to-business website, www.tamikamariaprice.com which everyone should visit.

HS: What gave you the idea to write your book, Standout Style? T: In addition to a family friend urging me to do it, I knew that writing a book was necessary for me to truly be classified as the expert I knew I was. The first chapter of the book is dedicated to connecting to my reader through me telling my personal story. The rest of the book teaches women how to identify their shopping personality, how to shop smarter, developing your style and includes visual examples of stylish looks. HS: Who would you say the book is geared towards and why? T: Standout Style is geared towards the same type of woman that seeks my services. She is an everyday

Tutoring and a Lit Espionage By: Jen Pontrelli James Bond, eat your heart out. There is a new team of super-secret agents on the job in Chicago these days and their mission is far more significant and thrilling than that of any fictional field agent. Unlike the MI6, the agents of 826CHI do not dally around with international intrigue and espionage. Instead these agents have taken on a much more monumental task in making it their mission to encourage the diverse students of Chicago Public Schools to believe in the power of writing by helping them to tell their stories. Established in 2005, 826CHI is the Chicago chapter of the non-profit organization 826 National, which was founded by author Dave Eggers and other writing and education enthusiasts in order to inspire children from ages six to 18 to improve their creative and expository writing skills. 826CHI provides one-on-one writing tutoring services, writing workshops for students as well as programs for teachers striving to inspire their students to write; work that executive director Barry Benson describes as, “terribly gratifying.” Gratifying as well as effective, as across the country, the 826 National organization engages approximately 30,000 students via eight chapters in major U.S. cities. In Chicago alone, 826 provides services to almost 4,000 students, each and every one of which has reported better grades as a result of 826CHI programs.

40

Halfstackmag.com

The headquarters for this group of crack operatives is located behind a seemingly innocuous storefront called The Boring Store in the quirky neighborhood of Wicker Park, which Benson aptly describes as, “a community we could really sink our teeth into.” Averting untrained eyes with the mundane name and ordinary facade, this store attracts only a specific kind of customer... the secret agent kind. Make your way past the bluff and inside you will find a treasure trove of “Q Branch” proportions featuring various espionage materials such as disguise kits, multifunction pens, maps, and other tools for survival. Like all of the 826 branches across the country, 826CHI has a theme that is intended to disarm students of nerves and reservations and ready them for fun and creative thinking. 826CHI’s theme is, of course, secret agents, while other branches, like 826NYC and 826LA, serve as superhero outfitters or time-travel consultants respectively. The Boring Store functions not only as an ice-breaker for students coming in for tutoring, but it also helps to foot the bill for the organization. Each and every dollar raised from selling spy equipment in The Boring Store helps to fund the programs that 826CHI provides to children and teachers at no cost. Traveling past all of the intriguing contraptions, you will find yourself at the center of 826CHI intelligence headquarters: the tutoring center. This huge, bright room is the setting for all of 826CHI’s

g, Writing, ttle

tutoring activities which include in-school and after-school tutoring, creative workshops, and even field trips; all run by the tremendous tutors that volunteer their time, insight, and sense of humor. Benson, especially, is in awe of the effort and enthusiasm put forth by the 826CHI volunteer tutors, “They are the essence of what keeps us going, we wouldn’t be able to provide services to nearly 4,000 kids a year without them.” Indeed the dedication of the volunteers, as well as Benson and his staff, are truly apparent in the tangible fruits of their labor; the publication of student work in compendiums. The latest collection, The Noise Felt Human, features work by students from Gage Park High School, John Harvard Elementary School and Golder College Prep. The

stories range from first-love woes and best-friend declarations to the haunting realities of growing up without fathers or dodging bullets on the street right outside of home. Some of these stories are haunting, but they are all incredibly inspiring. 826CHI has given these young writers a voice and a platform to express what the general public so rarely gets to hear. Though much of the content of The Noise Felt Human and the immense dedication to the 826CHI mission is serious, as an organization 826CHI greatly relies on fun to get by. From top to bottom, the 826 National organization has a sense of humor and is not afraid to show it. For newly minted executive director Barry Benson, this became clear last summer at a yearly convening

of all the chapters when the time came for each chapter to report on progress, financial standings and other business mumbo-jumbo. For these reports, the CEO and board- members encouraged chapters to report their statistics in non-conventional ways; perhaps using interpretive dance or singing a song. “That really colored the picture for me, even at business meetings they wanted as much creativity and free-thinking from us as possible,” Benson later said. The night and day difference in the business operations of 826CHI also make for really great parties in the name of fundraising. The organization has hosted a number of events including a Prom, a scavenger hunt-like event called Clandestine Quest and the annual gala which is humorously monikered “People Eating and Giving,” held every May. In keeping with the quirky nature of the organization, this year’s “People Eating and Giving” expects to be quite different from your typical charity gala in that Benson intends for it to be a type of “foodtruck rodeo” with bands and entertainment. Secret agents, rock and roll, and food trucks... this one is a can’t miss. As for the future of 826CHI, Benson and his team of elite secret agents have their work cut out for

42

them yet they gladly accept this mission. The organization is on the verge of partnerships with other non-profit organizations in the Chicagoland area in order to expand and provide services to a greater population. Even on the threshold of these great new ventures, Barry Benson maintains that 826CHI will never lose its fun and free spirit and will continue to carry out its assigned mission for many years to come.

MIXED CHICKS:

A monumental win for small businesses! Written By: Sophia Sanchez

Mixed Chicks LLC has set the precedent

for small businesses everywhere that they are not a force to be reckoned with. Taking on the multi-million dollar empire - Sally Beauty; on November 2, 2012 the United States District Court for the Central District of California, Southern Division ruled in favor of Mixed Chicks and awarded them $8,114,535 in actual and punitive damages. What brought on the almost two year lawsuit, you ask?! Beauty Innovators, long-time friends and Co-founders Kim Etheredge and Wendi Levy engaged in conversation over nine years ago about their struggles growing up as individuals of mixed race and the effect it had on their

44

unruly “tresses.” Sharing comical stories of growing up with crazy, untamable locks and their mothers’ inability to tame them, they realized that to that day there were no hair care products designed for women of mixed race or with naturally curly hair that advocated the EMBRACE of curls. Wendi, a full time high school teacher and Kim, a full time PR rep – decided it was time to put their heads together and in 2004 Mixed Chicks LLC was launched. Having designed a line of high quality, hair care products - Sally Beauty – the largest beauty supply distributor in the world – took great interest in partnering up with Mixed

Chicks. Being a new and small business, Mixed Chicks couldn’t afford to take on the risk of partnering up with such a large company because of discount and return policies implemented at Sally Beauty. However, the relationship between the two organizations remained a friendly one with talks of potential partnership in the future. Completely unbeknownst to the women of Mixed Chicks, in February of 2011 Sally Beauty put the product Mixed Silk on their shelves. It was through customers and retailers that Wendi and Kim became aware of the overall appearance of the Mixed Silk products and how it was confusingly similar to that of the Mixed Chicks’ line. In March 2011 the lawsuit was filed and after a grueling, almost two year ordeal, racking up over two million in legal fees and a process that

almost put Mixed Chicks out of business – the jury awarded Mixed Chicks $839,535 in actual damages and found that Sally Beauty acted willfully and with malice, oppression or fraud resulting in a punitive damage award of $7,275,000. Having asked the ladies of Mixed Chicks if they ever doubted their decision to go after the Sally Beauty Empire, Wendi had a few inspiring words to share. “Of course we questioned it. The case kept going out longer and longer and that was all part of Sally’s strategy. They were trying to break our pockets, and they almost did. But it all came back to the stronger idea that this has to be illegal and having done everything we were supposed to do legally, the justice system had to protect us somehow.”

Half Stack Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down one on one with the ladies of Mixed Chicks and here’s what they had to say: HSM: Having no professional experience in the beauty industry, what obstacles did you face that helped or hindered the growth of your business? Wendi: A huge obstacle in the beginning was just as you said, not having any experience in the beauty industry. Having started the business in my garage however, we did everything ourselves and as we grew we learned every aspect of our business. So today, when we hire people, it’s not a job that Kim or I didn’t already do ourselves.

46

Halfstackmag.com

What hindered us in the beginning is what helps us be better bosses and be more functional today. HSM: And you now have celebrity endorsements? Wendi: We do. The largest being Halle Berry. She started talking about how much she loves our product back in 2009. This is a natural endorsement. We don’t have a business relationship with Halle Berry, she is just that gracious. She really likes our product and she shares that with the world. It has really helped increase awareness of our products, especially since she isn’t looking for any financial payoff.

“I’m not mixed...just a white girl with frizz. Well, my daughter’s friend had tons of perfect curls and when I asked, her mom told me “Mixed Chicks did it.” So I tried, and guess what? NO MORE FRIZZY HAIR! It feels so good to wake up, not stressing about my hair routine.” -Karen M (Dallas TX)

HSM: Do you have any advice for those wanting to take the entrepreneurial path?

HSM: What plans do you have for the future of Mixed Chicks?

Absolutely. I think a lot of people don’t consider themselves creative but creativity really is in a lot of us. If you have an idea, put your best foot forward. You can make it come to fruition.

Wendi: We just hope to expand and grow the brand. We also hope to expand outside of the beauty industry. We don’t want to get too specific because there are still copycats out there and we don’t want them beating us to the punch.

Wendi: Plan to work long hours and don’t quit your day job until you see a light at the end of the tunnel. We kept our day jobs until 2007 when we started to see growth in our business. Halfstackmag.com

Interview with Horcaio Nieto By Kate Roth

Halfstack Magazine: First off, tell us about your background.

Horacio Nieto: I am originally from South Texas and moved to Chicago in 2000 to attend school. HS: When did you first realize you wanted to become a fashion designer? HN: I realized I wanted to be a designer when I was about 13 years old and I started sketching dresses for my mother. HS: What was the first article of clothing that you designed? HN: The first dress I designed was for my mother and it was a long dress with a cut out on the stomach where you could see her belly button and she found that humorous. HS: You have two lines, Horacio Nieto and Arlo Menswear, how long have you been designing the two labels? What are the design differences between the two? HN: I have been designing the womenswear line for about six years now and for Arlo menswear it has been four years. The difference between the two is not that big really. I still approach both lines the same with starting with an inspiration and then making the clothing to the targeted customer. HS: Tell us more about the Spring/Summer 2013 line, and where did your inspiration come from for this season? HN: The S/S2013 collection was inspired by the island of Mykonos. I wanted to design a wearable collection that was not so traditional Grecian but more modern and wearable with vibrant colors. The silhouettes would be feminine yet still with details and accents. HS: Describe the general process you go through when designing a line.

Designs by Horacio Nieto for Horacio Nieto and Arlo Menswear. Make-up done by Annie Wojtowicz. Photography by Stephanie Battista.

HN: I start the process by having my inspiration of what is getting my brain excited. If I don;t have something that inspires me then I have to find something because I will get bored with the collection and not want to do it at all. I then start to figure out what essentials I need in the collection and start designing from there. Once I have the designs the patterns are then made and I start to select fabrics.

Halfstackmag.com

53

HS: Where do you buy your fabric and other sewing materials? HN: I get my materials from everywhere. I shop at the fabric stores here in Chicago, I look online to fabric websites and I even call vendors out in LA and New York for fabric. HS: What are some of your favorite fabrics to work with and why? HN: I like to choose a fabric that has texture to it or I will even use the opposite side of the fabric because it will have more character to it. HS: What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing? HN: I believe an excellent article of clothing would consist of quality construction, great material and it is designed with the customer in mind and not dated. A customer wants a piece that they will be able to wear many times without looking like a certain era or genre. HS: How would you define your city’s fashion? How has it been as a fashion designer in Chicago? HN: it’s a shame because Chicago has so many fashionable business on the Mag mile but we have a very small fashion industry but no resources for us to survive. I have seen many design students leave because there aren’t jobs here for them and many designers that have to close or move their business. I always say designers in Chicago have to work twice as hard because you have to get your name out in the industry and then fight the stereotype of being in the Midwest. People automatically assume that there isn’t any fashion in the Midwest. HS: Do you have any advice you would like to give to aspiring designers? HN: My best advice is to prepare for anything because it is going to be a journey with many highs and lows. You honestly have to love what you do and be able to go with the flow in the industry because it can eat you alive and it will test your strength in many ways. HS: What is most important to you as a designer? HN: The most important thing to me as a designer is to produce quality clothing, staying in tune with my customer and being able to do what I love and not be unhappy with my work. HS: Who are your favorite designers that inspire you? HN: Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrerea, Valentino and the late Alexander Mcqueen HS: What are some accomplishments as a designer? HN: Some of my accomplishments are winning the 2008 AOL Latino Fashionista Competition, selling with Macy’s at the beginning of my career and making a name for myself in Chicago and other cities. HS: Where can our readers find out more about you and your work? HN: Readers can find out more about me at my website www.horacionieto.com or follow me on Twitter and Instagram with my handle @horacion.

Kayne West (or formally known as)

Photo By C Flanigan/FilmMagic OK, so this actress hasn’t really been mainstream lately. Is that why she got advice to wear a dirty shirt to Sundance? There is such a thing as bad publicity, it’s bad publicity! This shirt looks dirty, old, and honestly I thought I saw it on the lady asking for change down in the loop by the Metra Madison Street entrance. I guess that was Kate’s wardrobe stylist.

Photo By Oraito/Splash News So now that he is a daddy, is he really trying to get himself OFF the MARKET by wearing a ski mask?“Oh no ladies, I am Kim’s baby daddy… take your hands off me.”Kayne, nobody will be jumping on you… please. I know you take Kim’s advice about calling the paparazzi when you go somewhere and then pretend to be outraged at getting hounded by them. You don’t have to hide your face; we still know it’s you.Actually, never mind, hide your face…you’ll be doing us all a big favor.

So is this a celeb? I remember her in one movie where she was like, “I love you” to this one guy and then suddenly dies on him… pretty funny. So what the hell is she wearing? Is she trying to be a tigress with that hair and makeup or a flower with that bottom piece you call a skirt? Are those shoes or medieval socks? She is a big old mess here…I kinda want to throw her a cheeseburger (she needs it).

I wouldn’t go as far as to say these two are stars. One is a porn star (I think… I mean she looks like one), and the other is an interior decorator; or he likes to think he’s one. This picture is like a painting that you just can’t fix, like a Picasso gone really really bad. I mean, the girl is wearing underwear, it doesn’t even really cover her hooha. Statement sunglasses are the top accessory this season, but you do not need to spend a ton on designer frames to make an impression. Outrageous and fashion forward sunglasses will not match every outfit in your closet and you may need a few different pairs so be sure to get the best bang for your buck by checking out stores like H&M and Forever 21 for pairs under ten dollars. Of course those Tory Burch glasses will scream “look at me” while on your face, but they’ll also make your wallet scream when you sit on them while they are in your purse or when you drop them in the ocean. Keep an eye out for bright colors, accented hinges, and odd shaped frames. “Walk of Shame” Kim K glasses are no longer the only frames that are in now. Step out of your box into a bright pink frame with a gold hinge or a mellowed out yellow frame with an obnoxious bow hinge. Either way you go, statement sunglasses are always a win.

Date Night Outfits Written By: Teresa Espinoza Layout By: Brittany Jorgensen

Date…check. Roses…check. Reservations…check. Outfit…oh no! Yup, it is finally spring and time to get out and about with the one you love. The weather is just beginning to cooperate with us ladies and it is definitely a time to enjoy the best city in the world. So you have your perfect night planned out with the perfect date but what so many people forget is the outfit. I am utterly a firm believer in “if you look good, you feel good.” What you wear is so much more than just a few yards of fabric that cover you up. It dresses you up or dresses you down and can give you so much confidence that will show the entire night! Not sure about what to wear for the occasion? Here are a few of my styling tips that are sure to help make your date night complete! 64

Little Black Skater Dress Topshop $100.00

Who: Guys

Girls may love to dress up for a fancy date but guys do too! There is nothing more attractive than a guy dressed in his best! A collared dress shirt is a great way to go for a fancy restaurant. I love the idea of wearing it in a black gingham print with a skinny black tie. Pair it with a slim black trouser and black formal boot. Chicago weather tends to be on the chilly side during the spring months so you can never go wrong with a ¾ length black pea coat. Guys, you’ll definitely impress your date with your dinner date style!

¾ Length Coat with detachable collar Zara $229.00

The most popular of dates: the fancy restaurant. A girl needs to look her best right? You want to hit the right balance of flirty and chic with your outfit. Don’t go over the top and show too much skin. Big no, no! This dress is super flirty without going overboard into the vulgar end. The best part of this dress is that it gives the illusion of a deep plunging V without actually exposing all that skin. Pair it with killer red pumps and top it off with a bold red lip by Rimmel London. This outfit is sure to catch your date’s attention in all the right ways!

A bowling date can be a fun way to spend time with your love! The best bet is to keep it simple and go with basics. Dress it up with details. Dark skinny denim is a great way to go. The dark wash dresses up the look much more than a light wash. Wear a black V-neck cami to make it a little flirtier and top it off with a grey cardigan. The details should be the stand out. Pick a handbag with a little more room to fit all those little items you might need such as a change of socks for bowling. A simple detail like studding on the bag can make all the difference! Heels and bowling do not mix ladies! So wear a simple wedge bootie in burgundy to make the outfit pop instead. You’ll be sure to hit a strike with this outfit!

A date night is all about having fun with your loved one and making it special. Bowling may not seem like the most obvious date but is a great choice when trying to keep it easy going. Not all guys can pull off bright colors but they can definitely pull off basics such as black, white, gray and tan. Combine a grey basic jacket with a white tee and a tan ankle boot. Guys don’t forget that jeans can look great but stick with a dark wash for your date. A quick tip for dark wash denim is to make sure to wash them before wearing them the first time! You hate doing laundry I know but this will avoid the color from bleeding onto your tee or even your shoes!

Where:

Movie Date

Who: Girls

Who: Guys

The movie date is a classic and is always a great bet for a spring date! It is definitely more casual than a fancy restaurant date but still requires the perfect outfit! You want to make sure the outfit is not over the top. It’s a movie date after all so you do not want to show up in 6-inch heels and a mini dress. Keep it simple enough to be comfortable but keep the style factor in mind. I’m a total self-confessed blazer junkie. They go with almost anything from dresses to pants, and skirts to jeans. I love this Topshop Collarless blazer in ivory combined with a basic nude tank. Pair it with dark wash skinny denim and mid-length boot. The classic movie date has always been a great way to spend date night out with your special someone. Guys, you can keep this casual and light. However, that doesn’t mean you should wear a hoodie and sweats. Your date can be a complete fail if you go too casual. Girls notice what you wear and want you to look like you put some thought into it. You can combine a blue checked collared shirt with a pair of slim fit dark denim jeans. If slim fit jeans aren’t your cup of tea then try a relaxed fit. Just make sure they are not falling down and exposing your boxers. Huge no no! Bring the entire outfit together with a pair of gray canvas trainers and a black bomber jacket. Halfstackmag.com 67 You’ll look relaxed but really put together for your movie date.

In

Who: Guys

A night in is just about as private, personal and casual as you can get but that doesn’t mean you have to look like you just rolled out of bed! If you’re having your date over for the night you want to be as comfortable as you can without sacrificing your outfit. Just like the girls, you want to keep it simple. A white V-neck T-shirt, dark wash vintage slim jeans and a black cardigan work perfectly. Not enough layers for you? Try a light black scarf that will look great with the outfit. As far as the shoes, check out the Topman “Ellis” Lo Chukka boot. It strikes the right balance of comfort and style.

White Bound Vee Neck T-shirt Topman $14.00 River Island Cardigan ASOS.com $35.18 Stretch Color Jeggings Love Culture $15.90 Varanda Leopard Women’s casual Flat Steve Madden $89.98 We all have those instances where staying in for the night is the best date. Spending time with your date one on one can be nerve- racking. Don’t make it twice as stressful by wearing something totally uncomfortable! I get dreaded flash backs of wearing a mini skirt and having to constantly cover myself up from discomfort! Stick with an outfit that is going to be fuss free and practical. You want to feel comfortable but still look like you put some thought into your outfit. I love the combination of lightly sheer tan shirt tucked into red pants. Use a skinny black belt to make it look very put together. Are you an accessories kind of girl? Then use a long gold tone necklace to this. Finally, add a simple but cute flat in a fun leopard print and you’ll be all set to enjoy your Valentines night at home!

Who: Guys

If you’re one of the guys who are taking their date for a stroll downtown this spring, you want to make sure your outfit matches the occasion to help you make the most of your night. Navy is universally flattering so I suggest a navy cropped trench coat on top of a basic crew neck sweater. Instead of a solid color sweater, opt for a print that will make your outfit stand out from being too typical. Urban Outfitters is great for items like these. Add a pair of chinos and a brown boot to set it all off.

Perry Black Suedette Lace up platform boot. Boohoo.com $70.00 We live in the greatest City in the world and there’s nothing better than taking a stroll downtown to take in all it has to offer. If you’ll be spending time downtown for a spring evening rendezvous, the number one suggestion I have is to wear comfortable shoes! Don’t expect to walk for an extended period of time in those fabulous stilettos you’ve been dying to wear. Instead try out a black lace up platform boot. Yes, it has a heel but the platform does wonders! I have personally walked miles downtown in my Jeffrey Campbell Lita’s. They are so comfortable you won’t even notice you’re wearing heels, trust me! Try combining them with a jersey bodycon midi in Valentines red with a black leather jacket and a long bar necklace in gold. A leather bowler bag looks great with this outfit as well.

10 Ways

Strengthen Your Trunk (a.k.a Core/Abs)

and take it to the next level.

Written by: Justin Wilhoit

Photography: Dwight Bejec

Think of what you know as your “core” (which is the center of something), instead like a tree trunk which is deep rooted and strong all the way through. The core of something is typically only strong at one point.Your spine is like the center of a tree, the roots and wide base are the muscles surrounding your spine to keep it strong and protected. Here are 10 movements to get you started.

1 Nutrition

It’s #1 for a reason. If you are reading this because you want “abs”, then this should be your new project, start eating the right way. Everyday.Everyone has abs, we were born with them. If you can’t see them it’s because they are covered by excess body fat. Get rid of the excess and boom, there are your abs! Your body is the only vessel in this world that you will ever have. Put good fuel in (food) and keep up with routine maintenance (workout, stretch, yearly Dr.’s visits, etc.), and you will be able to enjoy more of the things you like to do for a much longer time, (For more info on nutrition see: Health and Fitness: the Hard Truth in the Fall ’12 edition of HALFSTACK Magazine).

2 Knee Raise

3 Dead Bugs

70

Simple, yet effective. Lay flat on the ground, connect your hips, shoulders, and head to the floor. Then raise your arms to the sky followed by both legs. Now you should look like a “dead-bug”. Try to keep your arms and legs straight and dorsal flex, or pull your toes to your chest. Beginners: start with five rounds of 15 holds, once you gain capacity move to max holds in this position, for time.

Find something to hang on, a pull-up bar, I-beam, swing-set, or anything you can get your hands around. Then hold on tight and hang without swinging. Once you are steady, raise your knees to your waist and hold. Change it up to add variety. Start with three sets of ten reps. Once that gets easier, do three sets of max holds for time with a minute rest between efforts. If you can’t hold yourself uplay on the ground and replicate the same movement while lying down.

4 Flutter-kicks

The ‘ole Air Force Basic Training special, flutter-kicks. Lay on the ground, hands under your butt, legs straight. Then move your legs up in down (flutter). Try to stay in the window of 6-18 inches with your feet. Meaning, 6 inches off the ground and no higher than 18 inches. Shoot for 30, then 60 to start.

5 Sprints If I had to pick one thing to do this would be it. Sprints are the most effective at gaining capacity in your trunk (“core”). You simply can’t sprint unless you are fully engaging all the supporting muscles around your spine. Find a street, sidewalk, track or anywhere that is dry and free of debris. Then, SPRINT F’ing FAST! Do 8 rounds of: 40 meter sprints and rest 90 seconds between each effort. Do it with a friend and time each effort so you will have a time to beat for the next go around. If sprinting is new to your routine, cut it down to 4 rounds to start. Stretching after a workout is always important, especially after this one, hamstrings, calves, and quads at a minimum. Bonus: when finished, you should get a rush of athletically induced endorphins!

6 Ring Push-Ups

You will need Olympic style rings for this one. Lower the rings so they are a few inches off the ground and then assume the push-up position. Regular style push-ups will work your trunk, but ring push-ups supercharges the movement due to the unstable rings. To perform the movement, keep your hands in tight and try to maintain a 45 degree elbow/shoulder position as you go down and up. In the bottom position, shoulders should be just below your elbows. In the top position, fully extend your arms. As you press up and lower yourself down, keep your shoulders and hips in sync (trunk should remain flat as a board). First, perform these for quality, then for max effort.

7 Side Planks These are great for developing the deep support muscles along your spine. They also help with coordination and really warm up the Central Nervous System. For beginners, place your elbow under your shoulder then stack both feet together. Now, lift your hips and hold for as long as possible, rest, then repeat. For advanced, start with the side plank, get steady, then lift one leg, if steady, lift your arm, hold for as long as possible.

8 Evil Wheels If you have been training for 2+ years then evil wheels may be for you. They are evil because they are very hard on the entire mid-section. Grab an ab-roller if you have one, otherwise, a barbell will do. Start in a kneeling position with straight arms, roll forward while hinging at your shoulders and hips only. To get back to the starting position, engage your trunk and drive your hips behind you, all while keeping straight arms. Pure Evil!

9 Overhead Squat

9.Overhead Squat: The overhead squat is an advanced movement taken from the sport of Olympic weightlifting. To properly overhead squat, even the empty barbell, you will have to be fully aware of your trunk and torso position. If not, the bar will fall forward or backwards. Grab a barbell with a wide grip, take the bar overhead and push and hold the bar towards the ceiling. Keep the bar up with your shoulders throughout the movement. Once the bar is securely overhead, adjust your foot position to shoulder width apart with toes slightly pointed out. To initiate the squat, push your hips back and begin to sit down into a squat position. It is important to keep a chest up position so your weight remains over the middle of your foot. Once you are below parallel, stand back up through your heel while pulling your chest up. Your core is doing most of the work on this movement, legs and hips are secondary.

10 L-Sit A potent pill to be taken in moderation. The L-sit is a movement from the gymnastic world and is an excellent way to tie your whole body together. To perform the L-sit, find a way to elevate your body off the ground. Shown below are homemade PVC pipe parallettes, but anything can be used. Once you have your body off the ground, maintain an “L position with your body, while keeping your legs as straight as possible. It helps to pull your toes towards your knees. Start off slow and get the feel of the movement, then work on max effort holds. 1-2 minutes is outstanding!
