Dan Mullen has spearheaded Mississippi State to unprecedented sustained success and reenergized the Bulldog fan base in the process. The MSU faithful have gone on to watch the 2014 Maxwell National Coach of the Year lead the Maroon and White to five straight bowl games for the first time in 115 years of Bulldog football. Through six years into his tenure, Mullen (46-31, .597) owns the highest winning percentage as a coach at State since the late Allyn McKeen from 1939-48 (.764), and he is third in school history for wins by a MSU head coach (46). In 2014, Mullen guided the Bulldogs to three straight wins over top-10 teams, a first in college football since 1983 Auburn. In the process, he led the program to its first ever No. 1 ranking, a spot it spent five straight weeks. For his efforts, he was recognized as the Associated Press Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year and the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year. It was the first time in program history that a coach was awarded with a National Coach of the Year honor. Mullen became the MSU all-time leader in bowl game victories with three when the Bulldogs trounced Rice 44-7 in the 2013 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. On top of that, Mullen owns a 4-2 record in the Egg Bowl rivalry, the second-highest winning percentage (.667) at MSU all-time against Ole Miss. He ranks third all-time in MSU winning percentage among coaches who have coached more than four seasons. From the moment of his introduction on Dec. 10, 2008, as the 32nd head coach in school history, supporters have turned out in record numbers and capacity crowds to support the Bulldogs. Mullen was widely regarded as one of the top young minds in college football when he arrived at Mississippi State, and he brought not only an impressive offensive resume and a list of NFL-developed quarterbacks, but also an energy and passion for the college game. A total of 13 players have been selected in the NFL Draft during Mullen’s MSU tenure. Of those 13, seven were considered ‘three-stars’ by recruiting services in high school. All seven of those are still in the NFL. The 2014 season was arguably the best in school history as Mullen’s group won 10 regu-

lar season games for the first time and claimed six SEC wins, the most by MSU since 1999. The Bulldogs finished second in the difficult SEC West and were tabbed seventh in the final College Football Playoff rankings. That propelled the squad to a berth in the Orange Bowl for the first time since 1941. Mullen’s team rewrote the MSU record books in 2014, shattering 22 single-season records, including 10 by National Player of the Year finalist Dak Prescott. Prescott delivered the finest season by an MSU signal caller in school history and finished eighth in the vote for the Heisman Trophy. Prescott continued a long line of Mullen developed quarterbacks that includes Alex Smith and Tim Tebow. Mullen developed a team that went from unranked to No. 1 quicker than any in college football history. The Bulldogs entered Sept. 20 at eighth-ranked LSU just outside the polls. Following a dazzling display by Prescott, MSU recorded its first victory in Tiger Stadium since 1991. Four weeks later, the Bulldogs were the nation’s No. 1 team following wins over No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn. MSU earned its highest Associated Press poll finish since 1940 when the final Top 25 rankings tabbed the Bulldogs No. 11. MSU tied its highest finish ever in the USA Today Amway Coaches poll with a No. 12 ranking. The AP ranking was the second-highest to finish a season in school history, behind only 1940’s No. 9 ranking. Off the field, Mullen’s players are constant achievers in the classroom and the community donating countless hours to the Starkville area and state of Mississippi. Eighteen Bulldogs were named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2013. During Mullen’s entire six-year tenure at MSU, 110 players have earned the distinction of SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient. The 42-year-old has helped the program improve its NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) every year in his tenure, including most recently the SEC’s fourth-best football APR with a score of 974. MSU is the only SEC football program to improve its NCAA APR score every year since the formula’s inception. The Mullen’s created the Mullen Family 36 Foundation, raising more than $250,000 for charity in the last two years. The foundation has impacted the lives of 36 different children’s charities throughout the state of Mississippi.
