BAGS ‘FOR PLEASURE’

A new Bianchi e Nardi 1946 boutique in the heart of the fashion district Quadrilatero della Moda

Bianchi e Nardi 1946 set up a new, elegant and innovative boutique in Milan in Via Bagutta 18. The Florentine brand of high-quality leather items, which combines contemporary design with traditional cra smanship, has chosen a prestigious historical building in the heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda. Clients will be welcomed in an environment which resembles a dining room of an elegant period home in Milan of the early 19th century with contemporary and dreamlike elements. A room designed to ensure one feels at ease, where one can relax and enjoy the tranquillity. Bags and other leather accessories are elegantly displayed like precious

crockery set on a large table in the shape of the Pirelli skyscraper - a tribute to Gio Ponti and one of the most iconic architectural buildings in Milan - where guests can be seated to admire the products which are also displayed on brightly-coloured “sideboards” and original display cabinets. Now in its third generation - along with Andrea, Laura, Gabriele, Alessandro and Giulia - Bianchi e Nardi collaborates with major international fashion brands and at the same time, strengthens its identity with its own collections, as well as its 2014 brand of the same name with creative director Alessandro Fumagalli. It is thanks to the skills of Florentine leather masters

that their products are of great value and stand out in terms of workmanship and originality such as those belonging to Il giardino dell’Eden, the new limited edition recalling a fairy tale world and the charm of dreams. Unique and high-quality materials and carefully cra ed details for collectors’ bags whose design is reminiscent of dawn, sunset and spring in full bloom. An exclusive collection, completed and enhanced by an elegant line of fragrances for the home, essences that nourish the soul and release your feelings, where every single aroma conjures up the colours, beauty and sheen that characterises the creations of Bianchi e Nardi.

BEAUTIFUL AND LESSER-KNOWN

A WALK AMONG OUTDOOR PLACES

Before your very eyes but hidden in the shadow of more famous monuments, there’s a less wellknown Milan that’s fascinating, unexpected and colourful. It’s a veritable open-air museum to be explored at a gentle pace, full of monuments both ancient and modern which are o en missing from the classic tourist itineraries. Come with us and discover these outdoor masterpieces, starting at the Central Station and finishing at the state-of-the-art CityLife district.

THE APPLE MADE WHOLE AGAIN BY MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO

Created and installed in the centre of Piazza del Duomo for the opening of EXPO in May 2015, Michelangelo Pistoletto’s huge Apple Made Whole

Again now occupies a key site in the city: the square outside Stazione Centrale. The work symbolises the evolution that involves all of human society.

MONUMENTAL CEMETERY

One of the city’s most emblematic places, founded in 1866 as a cemetery open to all Mila-

nese residents. Over time the site has become a genuine paean to Milan; not only a place for the dead but also an openair museum of sculpture and an oasis of peace, tree-lined and far from the city noise.

CASA GALIMBERTI

At number 3, Via Malpighi stands a building that’s an authentic example of early 20th-century architecture. Casa Galimberti is considered one of the most brilliant expressions of Milan’s Liberty style. This extraordinary building was commissioned by the Galimberti brothers and designed by the architect Giovanni Ba ista Bossi.

DISCO SOLARE

One of the key works in the artistic career of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the Disco Solare or Disco Grande was originally displayed in the Piazza Ducale of Vigevano, later moved to the Sforza Castle, and finally placed in its current position in Piazza Meda. In its abstract design, the sculpture encapsulates the proportions of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the city, it represents Milan’s dynamism and the power of the sun.

MONUMENT TO VICTOR EMMANUEL II

In the centre of Milan’s Piazza Duomo stands the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of Italy. The monarch is shown on horseback urging on his soldiers in the ba le of San Martino, 1859. The scene depicts the entry of the Piedmont army in Milan during the War of Independence. It is flanked by two marble lions.

COLUMNS OF SAN LORENZO

An architectural site located near Porta Ticinese, thought to be built in the late Roman period. This is Milan’s most ancient construction: the columns, bases, capitals and most of the surviving architraves date back to the second half of the 2nd century AD. In the evening this is a place for young people, with numerous bars and restaurants nearby.

L.O.V.E., the famous middle finger by Maurizio Ca elan that stands in front of Palazzo Mezzano e, home to the Italian Stock Exchange, in Piazza degli Affari. The name is an acronym for Libertà, Odio, Vende a, Eternità (Freedom, Hatred, Revenge, Eternity). Eleven metres of provocation and irreverence towards the financial power represented by the buildings and the period of history when they were constructed. The bulging veins of the truncated hand give the square a new allure and a ract tourists and performances.

THE CORTILE DELLE ARMI AT CASTELLO SFORZESCO

The largest of three courtyards at Castello Sforzesco is so named because in the past it was used by soldiers for training and weapons practise. The courtyard contains the Filarete Tower, the moat, home to a colony of cats, a pergola of mulberry trees, the Bona Tower and the statue of San Giovanni Nepomuceno. A genuine openair museum, testament to the lost Milan of centuries past.

THE CORTILE D’ONORE AT PALAZZO DI BRERA

The main courtyard of the Palazzo di Brera, home to the celebrated art school and gallery. The courtyard, like the rest of the building, dates back to the first half of the 17th century and was originally the cloisters of the monastery of Santa Maria di Brera, run by the Jesuits until their religious order was suppressed, when the building became the property of the state and turned into the home of the new academy of fine arts and museum.

BAGNI MISTERIOSI IN THE TRIENNALE

In the gardens of the Triennale there’s a surrealist work consisting of a pool with two huge bathers, a multicoloured swan and a colourful fish. This is the Fontana dei Bagni Misteriosi, created by Giorgio de Chirico in 1973 for the 15th Milan Triennial, when twelve artworks were installed in Parco Sempione.

ARCO DELLA PACE

The monument that symbolises the city, the Arco della Pace stands at the edge of Parco

Sempione, creating a unique and glorious place where young people like to gather on summer evenings. It’s a marble structure topped by a bronze sculpture. The ten galloping horses took some seven years to complete and occupy the entire top of the arch, two at either side and six in the centre, pulling the chariot of a female figure representing Peace.

COLORIS BY PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU AT CITYLIFE

Pascale Marthine Tayou’s installation Coloris catches the eye from a distance and arouses the curiosity of passers-by as it stands out against the skyscrapers of the CityLife district. The work consists of a forest of different-coloured poles topped by egg-shaped elements. The bright, vibrant colours chosen by the artist give a sense of joy and reference the diversity that embraces a borderless world. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the work, walking among the poles and experiencing an almost childlike wonder.

Milan at the centre of the world for Salone del Mobile

TEXT Teresa Favi Klumba Diocesan byPeterZumthorphotographedbyHélène Binet at Euroluce 2023

The Salone del Mobile returns to Milan, and with it the spotlight on a flagship element of Made in Italy: design, seen as an integrated system of creativity, manufacturing and technology that gives rise to the contents of the world’s most desirable homes, from furniture to accessories.

This year’s edition - taking place from 18 to 23 Aprilpromises to be even more interesting, because Euroluce, the biennial lighting exhibition, has been completely redesigned, and acts as a trial for new approaches. The exhibition space has been revolutionised and expanded with an arena for talks, space

for four exhibitions (including Natura, tempo e archite ura by photographer Hélène Binet, who “draws with light”) and 12 sites featuring artworks, all sharing the topic of light, which is also explored in exquisitely technical terms, launching an implicit challenge to the outside world. Content design and layout are entrusted to Beppe Finessi and Formafantasma. Maurizio Nannucci, one of the leading contemporary artists working with artificial light, presents a major site-specific work, a long neon inscription: You can imagine the opposite, the opposite being a way of living that’s creative,

curious and virtuous. Another significant place and a true cultural stronghold is the bookshop specialising in design, art and illustration, including a section of literature that explores the subject of light in various ways. The store is curated by Corraini Editori, and the project is by the Formafantasma studio, which conceived it as a welcoming, intimate and cosy place.

And there’s another new feature of the exhibition: there are no pavilions on the upper level. Everything happens on the ground floor, abandoning the former division between classical and design. Among the many changes is a confirmation that’s also in line with the new ideas: the SaloneSatellite, whose theme Design: where are you going? has been investigated through the responses of design schools and universities all over the world: 550 young designers from 34 different countries.

While all this is happening, Milan is enlivened by hundreds of Fuorisalone events, organised in different areas of the city as part of Milan Design Week. So keep an eye on the Brera Design District , where 240 events will take place in the area’s streets, palaces and showrooms, such as the one in Largo Treves: Dry Days, Tropical Nights by Agostino Iacurci for glo for art, which turns the facade of Palazzo Treves into a work of art. Another venue to consider is the Ex-Macello di Porta Vi oria, the former slaughterhouse complex brought back to life thanks to over 70 projects for the free Alcova exhibition, ranging from the immersive journey of Atelier Luma Arles to an installation by Habitarematerials. And don’t forget the Porta Venezia Design District and the 5Vie quarter, which includes the area between Corso Magenta, Sant’Ambrogio and the Colonne di San Lorenzo.

DIALOGUES IN ART

The 2023 edition of the Milan art fair

Miart is the fair in which modern and contemporary art and limited edition design come into dialogue, exploring the relationship between creativity of the past and the present and offering the public a broad chronological range, from early 20th century art to works by more recent generations. The 2023 edition recaptures the lively international mood that characterised the event until 2019, due to the fact that almost 40% of exhibitors are based overseas. With 169 galleries from 27 coun-

tries, the 27th edition of the fair - directed for the third consecutive year by Nicola Ricciardi - strengthens its global aspect and simultaneously consolidates its links with major Italian galleries. Crescendo is the watchword for this edition, highlighting the event’s development in the past two years and the desire to continue on an upwards trajectory beyond 2023. miart 2023 has also confirmed that the space will be divided into three sections: to showcase the work of the most recent generation of artists and gallerists, the visitor experience once again

THE HIDDEN MILAN

Galleria Rubin, a breeding ground for modern and contemporary art since 1997

Museums and public institutions are commi ed to spreading the knowledge of contemporary art in the city’s most internationally-known locations, but there is much more to see in Milan at private foundations, cultural associations and art galleries. A rich program of events is available every month in each Milan Concierge Information issue to learn more about our culture and the latest art trends of one of the world’s best known metropolitan cities.

Your hotel’s Concierge will help you explore the most original and unique venues, which o en go unnoticed and are difficult to find for tourists, but they are definitely the city’s most fascinating art places,

such as Galleria Rubin (Via Santa Marta, 10), established in Milan in 1997. Galleria Rubin has been focusing on contemporary painting and sculpture, both Italian and foreign, from the very start. Many beginner artists have been discovered and launched over two decades and some of them have made a name

INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS

PALAZZO INA

There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.

VIA LINCOLN

Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.

FONDAZIONE PRADA

The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI
