ai Ricasoli (anno di fondazione 1141) ai Frescobaldi (1300), dagli Antinori (1385) ai Mazzei (1435), fino ai Biondi Santi (1888). Una tradizione millenaria, costellata da dinastie che hanno fatto la storia dell’Italia e contemporaneamente, quella dell’icona più conosciuta e apprezzata della Toscana, il vino. Nella terra del Sangiovese, dove il Chianti Classico, il Brunello di Montalcino e il Nobile di Montepulciano legano il proprio successo a un preciso territorio d’appartenenza, spiccano anche i Supertuscan, vini che associano Sangiovese e varietà internazionali Sassicaia, Tignanello, Ornellaia, Solaia la cui paternità, cosa assai più recente, risale a un’altra dinastia, quella degli Incisa della Rocchetta (scesa a Bolgheri dal Piemonte in forza del matrimonio tra Mario Incisa della Rocchetta e Clarice della Gherardesca nel 1930). Grazie a questa tradizione di lungo corso, il settore del vino vede oggi la Toscana leader indiscussa. Lo conferma la storia recente dell’enologia toscana che parla straniero già dalla fine degli anni Settanta, quando la famiglia italo-americana Mariani fondò a Montalcino Castello Banfi. Sempre a Montalcino - ma questa è storia più recente - Louis Camilleri, alla guida della Altria Group Inc, la holding che controlla il gruppo Philip Morris, ha acquistato la tenuta Il Giardinello, mentre nel 2000 Richard Par-

From the Ricasolis (wine production since 1141) to the Frescobaldis (since 1300), from the Antinoris (1385) to the Mazzei and the Biondi Santi family (1888). 10 Centuries of wine tradition, characterized by family names of a very great importance for the history of the Italian country, and, at the same time for that of the most famous and loved symbol of Tuscany: wine. In this region of the sangiovese grape variety, where the success of the Chianti Classico, the Brunello di Montalcino and the Nobile di Montepulciano is strictly connected with the place of their production, people can even find the Supertuscan wines, with, beside the Sangiovese, some international grape varieties like Sassicaia, Tignanello, Ornellaia and Solaia, too. These wines have a more recent history, and were first produced by the Incisa della Rocchetta family (they came to Bolgheri from Piedmont in 1930, when Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and Clarice della Gherardesca got married). Thanks to this long-term tradition, we cannot doubt that Tuscany has no rivals today, as far as wine production is concerned. A confirmation for this comes from the recent History of Tuscan enology, which has been showing the interest of foreign people in it for some time. The first time was at the end of the 70s, when the Italian-American Mariani family founded Castello Banfi in Montalcino. Still in Montalcino – but this is more recent history, Louis Camilleri, leader of the Altria Group Inc -the holding company that owns the 11

Ma i wine enthusiast spopolano anche nel mondo della moda. Nel 1985 Ferruccio Ferragamo si innamora del Borro, una tenuta millenaria a San Giustino Valdarno in provincia di Arezzo, e nel 1993 decide di acquistarla dal Duca Amedeo d’Aosta, compreso il borgo medievale e la splendida villa padronale, che oggi è una realtà da 150 mila bottiglie l’anno. Lo segue Cavalli, con l’avvio del progetto Tenuta degli Dei nel 2000 - a Panzano in Chianti, in una tenuta di sua proprietà dagli anni ’80, attigua ai vigneti di Fontodi e al prodigio biodinamico del Castello di Rampolla - oggi gestito con successo dal figlio Tommaso. La febbre dell’economia del bello ha contagiato anche il mondo dell’Haute Joaillerie. Nascono infatti dal 2010 sulle armoniose colline di San Casciano dei Bagni i vini di una nuova azienda, Podernuovo a Palazzone: la firma è delle più preziose, Bulgari. Se gli investimenti stranieri in Italia sono ai minimi storici c’è dunque un’area del Paese e un prodotto che continuano ad attrarre imprenditori da tutto il mondo. a caccia è connaturata alle campagne toscane, quasi un modo di vivere. Così ogni luogo è habitat naturale di uccelli, ungulati, capi nobili stanziali oppure di passo. All’apertura lungo la costa era tipico il passo delle tortore. Poi le allodole nei campi dopo la mietitura. In Maremma l’inverno era dedicato al cinghiale: rari esemplari, veloci e sospettosi, la battuta aveva una liturgia precisa, severa. La starna, il non plus ultra, si cacciava nelle zone più nobili dell’aretino, delle colline fiorentine, nel pisano. Poi i fagiani che debordavano incautamente dalle riserve di caccia. Infine la specialità: la caccia agli acquatici, da Orbetello a Massaciuccoli. Questo mondo è stato travolto dalla modernità, dalla profonda trasformazione del territorio. Come si è modificata profondamente la stessa fauna selvatica. Un tempo il merlo era sinonimo di diffidenza, oggi becchetta nei giardini di città. Così oggi,

Hunting has always been part of the Tuscan countryside, a sort of lifestyle. There you can find everywhere birds, ungulates, noble game or even the passing of other animals. The passing of turtle-doves has been typical of the coastal hinterland. As the presence of larks after harvesting time. In Maremma Winter was the season of wild boars: rare animals, quick and suspicious; and hunting them meant following precise and strict rules. Grey partridges were chased in the noble country areas that surrounded Arezzo, the Florentine hills and the city of Pisa. Finally this region’s specialty: the hunting of aquatic animals, from Orbetello to Massaciuccoli. Trecento ettari di campi e boschi in una conca a 800-1000 metri slm 300 hectars of land and woods at a 800-1000 meters above sea level cacciare come una volta, senza che il fucile sia soltanto oggetto di distruzione, è sempre più difficile. Un’oasi, in questo senso, l’abbiamo trovata sull’Appennino, al confine fra la Toscana e la Romagna. Un’azienda turistico-venatoria che merita di essere visitata. Si chiama “Il Passeggere”, trecento ettari di campi e boschi in una conca a 800-1000 metri, nel comune di Firenzuola. È a metà strada fra Firenze e Bologna, distanti mezz’ora di auto: ci si arriva facilmente dall’Autosole uscendo a Pian del Voglio. La casa di caccia è anche un agriturismo con dieci belle camere e un ottimo ristorante dai profumi toscani e romagnoli. Il personale è competente e gentile: Enrico, il capocaccia (che è anche ottimo cuoco), conduce alla selvaggina stanziale (fagiani, pernici, starne) che si può praticare nella vallata o nei boschi d’alto fusto per una cacciata più impegnativa. Notevole quella agli ungulati, per la quale è stato realizzato un recinto di 50 ettari; si cacciano cervo, daino, muflone sia da altana che alla cerca. Non sono animali lanciati per l’occasione (come purtroppo avviene altrove), ma vivono liberamente perché l’azienda si è prefissa l’obiettivo primario di mantenere un’elevata selvaticità degli ungulati al fine di garantire un’esperienza venatoria unica per tutti i suoi clienti. I prodotti dell’azienda trovano spazio e vengono esaltati nel ristorante dell’agriturismo: dai piatti che si aprono con tipici tortelli di patate a quelli dove predominano la cacciagione e la Cinta Senese dell’allevamento aziendale.

Apennine Range, between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. There’s a wildlife hunting farm which is worth a visit. That is “Il Passeggere”: 300 hectars of land and woods, laying in a Hollow Reservoir at a 800-1000 meters above sea level, in the district of Firenzuola. It is situated at an equal distance from the cities of Florence and Bologna -about 30 minutes by car: you can easily reach it just taking the Autosole highway to Pian del Voglio. This hunt reservoir is an agriturismo (farm holiday), as well, with ten beautiful rooms and a restaurant which offers exquisite dishes of the Tuscan and Romagna cooking traditions. Enrico, leader of the hunt there (he is also an excellent cook) leads hunters in their quest for the animals of the territory (pheasants, partridges and grey partridges), which can be hunted either in the valley and in the high-trunk wood –for a more difficult hunt. There you can see a 50 hectares fenced enclosure for the numerous ungulates of the territory; and others animal people can hunt are deers, fallow deers and mouflons, from a hunting truck tower or by stalking. The truth is that these animals are not put there just because of the presence of hunters (as happens, unfortunately, in other places): they breed freely there because people of the farm have set themselves the target of preserving the animals’ wildness, so that all their customers can experience a unique hunt experience. All farm’s products are used and promoted in this agriturismo’s restaurant: from the typical tortelli di patate (potato tortelli) as the opening dish to game meat based recipes or the Cinta senese (Siena’s classic heirloom pig) from the farm’s local breeds. 23

Non so quando andrà in onda ma sono davvero felice di averlo interpretato – dice – Maroni era un giocatore del Toro morto tragicamente. Non era un grande solo in campo, era un fenomeno di costume. Eccentrico, contemporaneo, visionario direi... dico solo che era solito passeggiare con una gallina al guinzaglio”. Hai chiesto aiuto a tuo suocero per interpretare un calciatore? Everybody has heard about your love for vintage cars.. Really? Let’s say I am a “vintage” man. I like to think that there was the skillful work of a designer first behind a car, and than that of a body shop mechanic. Did you know that people used to assemble cars by hand until the 60’s? Maybe I have become nostalgic, because I was born in the era of mass production, where there weren’t differences among products. I love hand-tailored suits. as well. When I used to attend the Italian National School of Cinema, I used to look at the pictures of those actors of the past. They looked so elegant in their hand-tailored suits . Their look had nothing to do with the shabby fashion of today. It think it is also a way an actor shows his respect for the public. You are 34. You are considered one of the most important and talented young actors in the world of Italian film industry. You have had ever more success since the time you played the Dandi character in Romanzo Criminale (Criminal Romance). What do you wish for your future? I wish I would grow ever more in professional terms. Just as it has happened until now. In a measured way, without losing this energy I have, which is real and which helps me in avoiding the loss of the sense of reality. I know many examples of actors whose professional stories where this way, even in these last years. As for me, I do my best.. I just try to be happy.

Mi piace pensare che dietro ad una macchina ci fosse un’idea di design prima e l’abilità dei carrozzieri poi. Lo sai che fino agli anni ’60 le auto venivano assemblate a mano? Forse sono diventato un nostalgico perché sono nato nel periodo della produzione di massa, dove tutto è uguale. Adoro anche gli abiti sartoriali se è per questo. Quando andavo alla Scuola di Cinematografia vedevo le foto degli attori di ieri. Erano tutti così eleganti nei loro completi cuciti a mano. Niente a che vedere con la sciatteria di oggi. La considero anche una forma di rispetto nei confronti del pubblico. Hai 34 anni. Sei considerato tra i giovani fenomeni del Cinema Italiano. Dal ruolo del Dandi in ‘Romanzo Criminale’ in poi è stata un’ascesa per te. Cosa ti auguri? Di continuare a crescere. Così come è avvenuto finora. sce nella primavera del 2013 il film di Maria Sole Tognazzi (la più piccola di casa Tognazzi) Viaggio sola, storia di Irene (Margherita Buy) ispettore di hotel di Lusso la cui vita fatta di splendori e solitudini si incrocia con quella di Andrea (Stefano Accorsi) l’amico del cuore che dopo una notte d’amore con una sconosciuta si ritrova ad affrontare da solo la paternità. Ambientazione d’obbligo, lussuosi alberghi di varie città del Mondo. Sì ma quali? L’idea è piaciuta al gruppo The Leading Hotels of the World che ha messo a disposizione di Maria Sole i suoi Hotel. Un vero giro del mondo partito da Fonteverde, dove, dichiara la quarantenne regista: “È in quest’angolo di paradiso che ho scoperto durante una vacanza di piacere l’esistenza del gruppo Leading e forse non è un caso che proprio da qui abbiamo iniziato a girare, fino a toccare città come Parigi, con il de Carillon, la Svizzera, al Palace di Gstaad o Shanghai, con il De Puli”.

The new movie by Maria Sole Tognazzi (the youngest member of the Tognazzi family), Viaggio sola (I travel alone) is set to be released in Spring 2013. The movie deals with Irene (Margherita Buy), inspector of luxury hotels, whose life, characterized by luxury and solitude, interwines with her best friend Andrea (Stefano Accorsi), who, after a one-night-stand with an unknown woman, finds himself a single father. In this case, there was no choice but searching, as far as locations are concerned, for luxury hotels in various cities around the world. Fine. But which ones? The Leading Hotels of the World group has liked this idea, and has put its hotels at Maria Sole’s disposal. A real tour around the world, which had its starting point at Fonteverde: it was here, says the 40-year-old Italian film-maker , “in this angle of Paradise that I discovered, during vacation, the existence of the Leading Hotels group; and maybe it isn’t a case at all that we started shooting the movie here, before reaching the cities of Paris, at the de Carillon, Switzerland at the Gstaad Palace, and Shanghai at the De Puli”. 36

A proper visit of the Val d’Orcia requires more than a little time. The many lanes and paths will make you proceed slowly, in order to enjoy what you see, stopping to watch the view and the monuments, and discovering everything that is part of the landscape: farmhouses, isolated cypresses and badlands. A trip to the surrounding areas of Fonteverde will reveal you a lot of surprising places, starting from the province of San Casciano dei Bagni, whose urban structure will help you in the discovery of its most beautiful locations. The province’s urban structure is circular: the city centre tends to narrow around the top of the hill and the Collegiata on its peak. From Piazza Matteotti, as from a terrace, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside. Six Kilometers away and sheltered at the top of a hill, you will find Celle sul Rigo, a little village famous for its “celle vinarie” (press rooms) and for its pici -handmade dough spaghetti and typical local dish, to which every year people dedicate a very abundant sagra (gastronomic feast) this year from the 24th to the 26th of May. For those who are interested to gastronomy we suggest they visit Contignano, seen as the main symbol of the suggestive landscape of the Val d’Orcia, because the typical dish is here the ravioli pasta. But Contignano has a great importance also because it had been the birthplace of PioII (That Enea-Silvio Piccolomini who had edified, not very long distant, his ideal city: Pienza), and because the valley, which is particularly orderly,

Viottoli e sentieri invitano a muoversi lentamente, ad assaporare ciò che si vede, a sostare di fronte ai panorami e ai monumenti ma anche davanti ai dettagli: casali, cipressi isolati, calanchi. Un’escursione nei dintorni di Fonteverde è ricca di sorprese, a cominciare da San Casciano dei Bagni, il capoluogo, la cui conformazione urbanistica porta alla scoperta degli angoli più belli. È un percorso circolare: il centro storico si avvita intorno alla sommità del colle e alla Collegiata che ne segna il vertice. In piazza Matteotti, come in una terrazza, si può ammirare uno dei panorami più belli della campagna toscana. A sei chilometri troviamo Celle sul Rigo, arroccato sulla cima di un poggio, piccolo borgo famoso per le sue antiche “celle vinarie” e per i pici, gli spaghetti di pane fatti a mano, uno dei piatti tipici della gastronomia locale e che ogni anno dà vita a una fantasmagorica sagra (quest’anno dal 24 al 26 maggio). Se si vuol stare dietro alla gastronomia occorre fare un salto a Contignano, roccaforte nel suggestivo scenario della Val d’Orcia, perché qui sono di casa i ravioli. Ma Contignano è notevole anche perché dette i natali a Pio II (quell’Enea Silvio Piccolomini che edificherà poco lontano la sua città ideale: Pienza), e perché il borgo – particolarmente curato – conserva le vestigia di uno dei tre Spedali che sorgevano in Val d’Orcia 39

Another very orderly village is Monticchiello, whose medieval walls and tower Torre del Cassero are the remains of the past history of this small city that looks out onto the Val d’Orcia, with the giant mount Amiata in the background. An example of rare cultural autonomy and public spirit is given by its inhabitants, who have given life to the “Teatro Povero” (poor theatre): they write by themselves and put on stage the theatrical representations the whole month of August in the main square. And how couldn’t we end this brief journey better than with a tour in Radicofani? Located between the Orcia and the Paglia rivers, it offers the unforgettable view of endless landscapes, from the Mount Amiata to the Apennine chain, from the lakes of Bolsena and Trasimeno to the softened reflections of the Tyrrhenian Sea. T At the top of the cliff people can admire the imposing Carolingia castle. Fortified by Pope Adriano IV (in 1154), it was turned into a fortress, becoming then, between 1297 and 1300 the inaccessible refuge of the Ghibelline Ghino di Tacco. In the higher part of the village lays the Palazzo Pretorio (1255) with the emblems of the powerful Senese representatives at the time of the Italian Republic. Don’t lose the great “La Posta” Villa Medicean on the Cassia Road, at the bottom of this small city.

Al “Teatro Povero” è dedicato anche un piccolo e interessante museo. E come non finire questo breve viaggio con una visita a Radicofani? Spartiacque fra l’Orcia e il Paglia, offre la visione indimenticabile di panorami sconfinati che dall’Amiata spaziano alla catena dell’Appennino, dai laghi di Bolsena e Trasimeno al riverbero sfumato del Tirreno. Il paese sorge alle falde di un’elevata rupe vulcanica che si erge a 896 metri sui mare, coronata dai ruderi di un’imponente fortezza che per secoli dominò il valico di confine tra la Toscana e il Lazio e il traffico lungo la Cassia (sui suoi tornanti si combattevano le battaglie più vere delle Mille Miglia). Partendo dalla sommità della rupe s’impone il castello carolingio. Fortificato dal Papa Adriano IV (1154), fu trasformato in fortezza e dal 1297 al 1300 fu inaccessibile rifugio del ghibellino Ghino di Tacco. Nella parte alta del paese si trova il Palazzo Pretorio (1255) con gli stemmi dei podestà senesi al tempo della Repubblica. A valle del paese, sulla Cassia, da vedere la grandiosa Villa Medicea “La Posta”. 40

Monsummano Terme. Il suo stretto legame con natura e attività fisica A place that perfectly combines nature and fitness Monsummano Terme. A treasure of wellness and natural beauties which lays in Valdinievole, bordering with the Montalbano hills in the North and the Padule of Fucecchio in the South: this is the landscape against which the Grotta Giusti, temple of relax and nourishment for the body and the soul, stands out. Given its closeness to the Padule, a nature-reserve of great importance for the richness of flora and fauna, this city has always been a meeting-point for bird-watching lovers, since they can admire there as many as 8,000 exemplars of birds, belonging to 250 different species. People can follow –by feet, on horses, or riding mountain-bikes, the roads that cross the Padule of Fucecchio or the paths that connect Monsummano with the hills of Montevettolini or Monsummano Alto, the place where in 1988 the Sentiero Geologico (Geological Path) was created. Another idea for open-air sportive activities is golf playing at La Vecchia Pievaccia, one of the best golf courses of the whole Tuscan region, which has a 18-holes track and a really complex playing surface of nearly 6,000 meters. ottava meraviglia del mondo, così Giuseppe Verdi definiva l’antro carsico di Grotta Giusti, visitato più volte dal grande compositore italiano, legato peraltro da profonda amicizia e solidarietà politica al quasi coetaneo poeta e patriota Giuseppe Giusti, figlio di quel Cav. Domenico che nel 1849 l’aveva scoperta. Insomma sembra che il padre di Traviata, Aida, Rigoletto, Nabucco e del Trovatore di cui il mondo festeggia proprio quest’anno i duecento anni dalla nascita (10 ottobre 1813 – 27 gennaio 1901) avesse una speciale predilezione per questa parte della Toscana e per Grotta Giusti. I legami di Verdi con la Toscana risalgono alla “prima” dell’opera Macbeth a Firenze (il 14 marzo 1847, al Teatro della Pergola di Firenze), e perpetuati fino al suo ultimo anno di vita, basti pensare che dal 1882 al 1990 Verdi trascorse ogni estate tra Monsummano e Montecatini fino a diventare un vero e proprio testimonial di quella che egli stesso definì, con una felice metafora, “La fabbrica di gioventù”.

“The eight wonder of the world”, this is how Giuseppe Verdi called the carsic cavity of the Grotta Giusti, where the great Italian composer often used to go. Under other things, Verdi had a strong binding of friendship and political interests with the poet and patriot Giuseppe Giusti, who was nearly of his same age and who was son of Cav. Domenico, the man who discovered the cave in 1849. So it really seems that the author of the operas Traviata, Aida, Rigoletto, Nabucco and Trovatore, whose birth’s bicentennial is being remembered this very year all over the world (10th October 1813- 27th January 1901), had a special affection for this part of Tuscany and for the Grotta Giusti. Verdi’s love for Tuscany started the day of the first representation of the Macbeth opera in Florence (on the 14th of March 1847 at the Florentine Teatro della Pergola), and continued till the last year of his life: just think about the fact that, between the years 1882 and 1990 he used to spend every Summer in the cities of Monsummano and Montecatini, thus becoming a real sponsor of what he said to be, using an incisive metaphor “A youth machine”. 46

From 22 to 29 September all cycling lovers will not lose sight of Tuscany for the World Road Cycling Championship 2013, the most important sporting event this year in Italy: three categories both for women and men (Junior, Under 23 and Elite) and seven days of cycling and entertainment, with thousands of tourists-cycling supporters from all over the world. E se Firenze fa da capolinea per ogni competizione Lucca, Pistoia e Montecatini faranno da luogo di partenza per otto gare su dodici e così il verde della Lucchesia e la campagna della Valdinievole (con sguardo privilegiato da Grotta Giusti) faranno da cornice alle gare, mentre i 134 metri del Serravalle saranno quelli della prima salita a fare selezione prima della lunga volata in piano verso Firenze. La prima corsa sarà quella a cronometro a squadre per Donne Elite, al via alle 9 da Pistoia; nel pomeriggio alle 14 da Montecatini la partenza della stessa gara ma per Uomini Elite. Chiusura il 29, con la Lucca-Firenze per Uomini Elite. Il tutto con un Pinocchio vestito con i colori dell’iride ad accompagnare tifosi e turisti in giro per la Toscana.

This will be a unique occasion for a re-discovery of Tuscany from people from all over the world: then, thanks to the presence of television broadcasters, as well as of the many initiatives connected with this sportive event and the numerous people who will be watching it along the races’ tracks, millions of tourists will have the possibility to admire the beauties of the Tuscan region, “using” this event as a chance to spend some vocational days in Italy. Everything will officially start on the 22nd of September with the Elite Team Time Trials, but the best teams’ racers will come to Tuscany even before. And while Florence will be the final destination of all the races’ tracks, the cities of Lucca, Pistoia and Montecatini will be the starting points for eight races out of twelve, so that the green areas around Lucca and the countryside of Valdinievole (with the best view from the Grotta Giusti spa resort) will be the background locations for the competition’s races, while the 134 meters of the track in Serravalle will be decisive for a first selection among the racers during the uphill climbing that will then be followed by a long flat road cycling. The first race will be the Elite Women Time Trial, starting at 9:00 am from Pistoia, while in the afternoon at 2:00 pm the Elite Men Time Trial will have its start in Montecatini. The last racing competition day will be on the 29th of September with the Lucca-Florence Elite Men Time Trial. During the whole competition cycling supporters and tourists in Tuscany will even have the pleasure to admire a Pinocchio in rainbow colours. 49

For over forty years, on the first two weeks of July, the locals stage a “ self-drama” they have worked on during wintertime.
