STYLISH EXPERIENCE Fashion, nature and art: Shopping at Barberino Designer Outlet is like being on holiday TEXT Francesca Lombardi

A

special place where not only you can have a real fun shopping experience but spend time with all the family in total relaxation. There are 120 shops at Barberino Designer Outlet featuring the most important made in Italy brands with a wide selection of international names and 70% off all year round. There are also special offers for him and for her as well as for the little ones. Surrounded by the greenery of Mugello, it is a perfect day out where you can have lunch in the many bars and restaurants in the shopping centre or once you have finished shopping, you can visit one of the nearby towns. Designed like a real Renaissance village, the charming river that crosses it with its bridges and small waterfalls is an important element which strongly recalls its connection

with Florence and its surrounding scenery. As well as the shopping and the beautiful architecture, Barberino Designer Outlet has also a wide range of services for children or even for the visitors’ four-legged friends: the serene landscape blends in with the atmosphere of the place as you walk around the centre, almost taking you away from your daily busy life where you can enjoy shopping in complete relaxation. Easily reachable from the most important places of the region, the shopping centre is located in a strategic place, only half an hour away from Florence in the beautiful Sieve Valley, close to Lake Bilancino and the Mugello racetrack. Due to its splendid location surrounded by greenery and its history of the region, Barberino Designer Outlet wanted to create an editorial project to

reaffirm its commitment to the local tourism sector and offer more to its customers: a guide with four itineraries starting from Mugello which can be visited in a few hours or for an entire weekend. The itineraries are split into four main categories: activities and views, points of cultural interest, gastronomy and accommodation. During this period, whoever visits the Barberino Outlet can enjoy two special advantages: the sales which will continue until 30 August and a wonderful exhibition of contemporary art by the Cracking Art collective from 12 July to 25 September: more than 100 giant plastic animals are everywhere around the precinct to remind us of the importance of nature and respect the environment. A commitment that McArthurGlen has been involved in for a considerable amount of time. 25

LET’S DISCOVER FLORENCE WITH LORENZO ILLIBERI

As a Chiavi d’Oro Concierge in Florence, here are a few tips to those visiting the city to help them get the most out of their stay

30

I started working in hotels right after graduating from high school to pay for my university studies, because I wanted to get a degree in Law. And the experience of working in reception at Hotel Corona was so amazing that my plans were overturned. I found an extremely professional team and managers who were dedicated and very friendly. From that moment on, I threw myself into this work, and I’ve been doing

it ever since. Since 2001 I’ve been working at Hotel Bernini Palace, where my main aim is to seek out increasingly unique and exclusive activities for the guests, finding appropriate solutions to suit all tastes and needs. It’s an instinct I’ve always had, and which has come to the fore since I joined Le Chiavi d’Oro in 2005. I spend my free time with my family or training: I’m an enthusiastic marathon runner.

TUSCAN DISH

GNUDI ALLA FIORENTINA

Let’s discover the recipe for this traditional Florentine dish from Cantinetta Antinori TEXT Martina Olivieri METHOD: Start by squeezing the water out of the spinach and chopping it. Blot the ricotta between two sheets of paper towel. In a large bowl combine the ricotta and the spinach and mix well. Add the peel of half a lemon, a teaspoon of nutmeg and the salt. Mix well and add the eggs, egg yolk and lastly the flour, taking care not to over beat the mixture. Divide the mixture into small pieces and with floured hands roll into little balls which should then be left to firm up in the fridge. FOR THE SAUCE: cut the date tomatoes in half lengthwise, place them on a baking sheet

with cut side up, season with salt, oil, basil, thyme and a dusting of icing sugar. Bake in a 180° oven for about twenty minutes. When they are cooked and still hot, add 1/4 of a garlic clove finely chopped and the chili powder. Put the tomatoes in a pan with oil, garlic and basil and a drop of water and cook quickly. Blend 1/3 of the tomatoes with a hand blender and combine with the whole ones. Cook the gnudi in boiling salted water. When they float to the surface they are ready. Coat the base of a dish with the sauce, place the gnudi on top, drizzle with olive oil and dust with shaved Parmesan cheese. Garnish with basil leaves.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE GNUDI: 600 gr cooked spinach, 400gr sheep’s milk ricotta, 1 egg yolk, 2 whole eggs, 200 gr 00 flour, nutmeg, grated lemon peel and salt FOR THE SPICY DATE TOMATOES: 300gr date tomatoes, icing sugar, thyme, basil, garlic and chili powder

THE SEA INSIDE Eilean Panerai: a story, a legend, an exclusive experience, a brand TEXT Teresa Favi

PANERAI ACQUIRED EILEAN IN 2006

T

he Tuscan coast has been visited several times by the Eilean, the fabulous 22-metre 30s-style Bermuda-rigged ketch whose name means small island in Gaelic, newly restored by the celebrated Florentine watchmaker. The original design was by Scot William Fife III and his company Fife & Son, one of the most feted yacht builders in sailing history. In 1982 the Eilean was used by Duran Duran for the video of Rio; in the 90s the boat began an inexorable decline until, during Antigua Classic Week 2006, it caught the eye of Angelo Bonati, then chief executive at Officine Panerai, who bought the yacht and embarked on a meticulous restoration at the Del Carlo shipyard in Viareggio. Three years later it was back in the water, with almost all its original plank56

ing intact. There was nothing in the world that could convey the Panerai values Italian design, Swiss technology and passion for the sea since 1860 - like this magnificent yacht. The Eilean has three cabins and can accommodate 10 people; the main mast is 28.5 metres tall, the mizzen 18.3 metres, with a sail area of 301 square metres (mainsail, topsail, jib, staysail, yankee). It was built in 1936, shortly before Panerai presented the prototype of one of its most famous creations, the Radiomir watch case, the first ever developed by the Florentine watchmaker. Today the Radiomir Eilean Experience Edition (PAM01244) celebrates two legends of the sea, Panerai and the Eilean, with a new watch produced in a limited edition of just 50. The Radiomir Eilean Experience Edition combines

Panerai’s aesthetic and technical codes with details inspired by (or taken directly from) the Eilean, a wonderful way of appreciating the yacht’s allure. Sailing to Positano on board the Eilean is a tribute to Italian design lineage and the seafaring legacy that is an essential part of the Panerai universe.

Launched in 1936, Eilean is a ketch, or two-masted sailing yacht, designed by Scotsman William Fife, an accomplish naval architect who completed some 600 vessels in his lifetime. Now the boat occasionally sails as a roving ambassador for the watchmaker

UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES Explore Florence from a hot air balloon or a traditional river boat

SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL, THAT WILL LEAVE YOU AWESTRUCK AND SPEECHLESS

F

lorence is always beautiful, it’s true. Whether it’s the first or the thousandth time you stroll through its streets, cross the Ponte Vecchio or end up in Piazza Duomo or Piazza della Signoria, the city never loses its aura of magic and wonder. But why not treat yourself to a completely new and unusual view? Something really special, that will leave even lifelong residents of Florence awestruck and speechless. Two of the most thrilling experiences are complementary and symmetrical: the view from above, on board a hot air balloon, and from below, on the city’s natural artery, the river Arno. HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHT In a hot air balloon you’ll see breathtaking views and enjoy the thrill of free flight: an unforgettable experience. Flights for groups, couples or singles can be booked 60

with Vastano Mongolfiere, for a free-flying experience with your heart pounding and your gaze on the 360-degree views of beautiful Florence. There are two launch sites: the lawn below the Tower of San Niccolò beside the river, or the gorgeous Gherardesca Garden at the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. The most spectacular time of day is definitely sunrise, a key moment that merits a front-row seat. Once at the launch site, the balloon is inflated, the burner is lit, the hot air opens and fills the envelope and the balloon slowly lifts off the ground. As the enormous balloon gains height, you’ll see, in the distance but quite distinct, the red-brick rhombus and white and green marble facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce and, further away, kissed by the rising sun in the east, the building that contains Michelangelo’s Medici Chapels (recog-

nisable as a square-shaped pietra forte building edged in white marble and topped with an eight-sectioned red dome), not far from the Duomo and Giotto’s Campanile. It feels like you could almost reach out and touch it. Gradually the pilot

IN A HOT AIR BALLOON YOU’LL SEE BREATHTAKING VIEWS AND ENJOY THE THRILL OF FREE FLIGHT: AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE the Florentines, the Arno is a lifelong companion. Ever

since the beginning, when the Romans turned the river ford into a wooden bridge and drained the surrounding area to establish the first nucleus of the future city on the right-hand bank of the Arno, near Ponte Santa Trinita. Navigable as far as the Affrico tributary, the river made this Roman colony a wealthy emporium in an age when transport by water was far less costly than by land. Indeed, Florence would not be the same without the Arno. For a privileged river experience, just book one of the boat trips organised in summer by the I Renaioli Cultural Association.

Ponte alle Grazie and Ponte Vecchio from the hot air balloon (ph. Dario Garofalo)

Today the Arno is not fully navigable as it passes through Florence, but the central section is, and this is undoubtedly the most interesting, between the Pescaia di San Niccolò and Santa Rosa, the two weirs that have regulated the river’s flow since the Middle Ages. The boat trip is perhaps best taken at sunset, when everything - including the water - starts turning gold; the departure point is Ponte alle Grazie. From here you glide silently past the Uffizi and the Vasari Corridor, before passing under Ponte Vecchio as you marvel at the area of the city most densely packed

with history, noble palaces and austere towers. Having passed the church of Santi Apostoli and Palazzo Corsini, you can salute the rams

then continue alongside the San Frediano quarter, where the apse of the church of San Jacopo Soprarno stands at the water’s edge. This brings you to the Ponte alla Carraia, where you turn back towards the launch point opposite Palazzo della Borsa. On the way you’ll not only marvel at the beauty of Florence but, thanks to the stories told by the boatmen, you’ll also hear fascinating anecdotes and tales of the past, when men worked on and in the river. The same route can also be booked as a private tour for couples or groups of friends. 69
