NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TIPS

Setting yourself up for success HILLARY EVANS, ASSISTANT MANAGER/COACH, CURVES

I

t is that time of year where we are all reminded that we can once again start anew. January 1 marks the day that most people decide to let go of old habits and move towards a new way of being—anything from losing weight, tossing out bad habits, and ridding onseself of toxic relationships can be resolved. The decision to move towards our goals seems easy with enough determination, but what happens when the motivation and determination wears off? If you’re just starting, I suggest investing in a calendar (that you can see every day) and a journal as tools to help you meet your goals and keep you on track. Listed below are steps to help you achieve your goal and to move forward into your new life:

In your journal, make a list of things that you will need to help you accomplish your goal. Losing weight requires exercise, changing eating habits, and emotional support. Now that you know what you need, how will you get those needs met? Do you need a gym or exercise equipment? Do you need to learn how to eat better, and who can offer you emotional support on your journey? List what you need and answer how those needs can be met. Reach out for help, and if that requires paying someone for professional assistance, DO IT. You are investing in yourself. You are the #1 person who will always be there for you. No excuses can justify neglecting yourself.

You are investing in yourself. You are the #1 person who will always be there for you. No excuses can justify neglecting yourself.

In your journal, take some time to write down what you want to accomplish. Write it as if it has already happened, for example: “I have lost 20 pounds.” See it as something you have already accomplished. The small shift in writing it down this way allows for your brain to feel the accomplishment before it even happens, and sets you up for success. After you know what you want, give yourself a deadline of meeting that goal. Write it on the calendar (that you have perhaps hung on the refrigerator) in a bright and noticeable color. In your journal write, “I lost 20 pounds on April 1, 2022.” As part of reaching your big goal, set in place mini manageable goals that can be incrementally met. For example, if losing 20 pounds is your goal, then set in place small goals that you can achieve. Make your first milestone to lose five pounds, and then put a deadline to meet this goal on your calendar. Be realistic and set your deadlines to be something that you can truly achieve. No one is losing five pounds in a week in a healthy manner. Give yourself a month at least to lose the set goal of five pounds.

Place your why somewhere. There is a reason why you want to change. Posting it where you can see it will be the daily reminder as to why the changes are necessary. Is it to fit into your favorite piece of clothing? Is it to impress others? Is it simply for your health? Write it in your journal and put it where you can see it (next to the calendar on the refrigerator). Last but not least, reward yourself when you meet your goal! Change is difficult. If you can put into place something that is a light at the end of the tunnel to keep you going, DO IT! Also, remember to not get down on yourself if you slip up. Remind yourself that you are human, and that you are not seeking perfection, but moving toward progress. Lean into your emotional support person if that is what you need. Baby steps are better than no steps. As a reminder, change does not happen overnight. Real change happens over a period of time through consistent action. Be gentle with yourself. The future you will love the present you for taking the time to care and put in the work today. Good luck (and you got this)!

Access for all at your Hewitt Public Library WAYNETTE DITTO, DIRECTOR, HEWITT PUBLIC LIBRARY

H

ewitt Public Library was recently awarded $184,231 from the Federal Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF). The Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) ECF is an initiative included in the American Rescue Plan approved by Congress in March 2021. The ECF was designed to help schools and libraries across the country provide critical online resources to students, staff and library patrons by addressing needs for remote learning. The announcement came at the end of the second wave of funding, and the FCC has awarded funds to 516 public libraries across the nation. Connectivity is an important role that libraries play within their communities. The library’s role as a technology resource exploded in 1996 when only 28 percent of libraries offered internet access. Today, almost all public libraries offer visitors free access to computers and the internet.

According to a Pew survey published last year, less than two-thirds of Americans in rural areas have a broadband internet connection at home, four out of 10 don’t have a computer, and three out of 10 don’t have a smart phone. Seeing the need and listening to stories firsthand, we searched for grants and partnerships to fund computers and hotspots to circulate outside the library. We applied for several grants and were turned down, but we would not stop searching. Now, Chromebooks and hotspots will be put into circulation and made available to HPL cardholders and community partners to use outside library walls. The new devices will expand services to address the technology gap being felt by students and adults studying and working remotely.

Studies from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation show that people from all walks of life use library computers to perform routine and life-changing tasks—from emailing friends to finding jobs—and sometimes they need assistance from a librarian, or temporary access in an emergency. We are grateful for the opportunity to purchase 200 Chromebook computers and 100 wi-fi hotspots to loan to HPL patrons. These devices will make a major dent in closing one of the hardest parts of the digital divide that came to the forefront during the pandemic. The shutdown was a disruption, but in disruption comes opportunity. During the shutdown, HPL offered services such as curbside pickup, virtual programming for all ages, grab-andgo kits, summer reading, dial-a-story, and 3-D printing. However, the one service that patrons needed most was located inside the library and could not be loaned—computer and internet access. HPL’s parking lot became a place for parents to bring their children to do homework, for small business-owners to work, for jobseekers to fill out an application, or for those filling out unemployment applications while connected to HPL’s wi-fi.

Through the Emergency Connectivity Fund, the FCC created an opportunity for millions of Americans, and the Hewitt Public Library is proud to be recognized for providing these critical services and devices to our patrons.

ARE YOU READY FOR SUCCESS?

Time is money and money is time CHARLIE TURNER • MAYOR, CITY OF HEWITT

W

hen I was a young boy, everyone who gave me advice as to how I could ready myself for success said, “Get yourself a good education and you will succeed!” As the years passed, I began my educational journey through grammar school, junior high, high school and college, just as I had been taught. The years progressed, I got married, started one or more careers and a family, and it seemed success had found me at last. We all like to share information and good advice that we get from others, which inspires a pleasant utopia to be lived as a career until retirement. This newfound career begins to afford opportunities to make money, buy assets, and purchase the necessary elements for leisure time relaxation as a break from the routine of work. Years pass as your career choice becomes the routine of boredom, awakening the drive for success that has now failed. Research exposes the fallacy of placing your dreams into just one career path, so there must be diversion and more education to achieve the elusive prize of success. Once again, the attempt to find success begins once again, as this new diversionary higher education choice follows the same result to boredom as a means to deliver success. You may continue to ask and/or reflect on what life has taught you about other successful people that you interact with. What do they possess, and what have they learned that eluded you on this career journey? Using a success checklist, all of the necessary boxes have been selected to indicate that success should be mine. Why does everything (as well as good advice) not bring peace and the contentment of success? I still have an empty feeling, as if there is no ultimate climb to success. Perhaps the emptiness I feel is the result of trying to live life to the values of another person’s definition of success. I saw a picture once that depicted a country pasture scene showing four cows grazing. Upon closer observation, the artist placed all of the cows at a crosspost-supporting barbed wire, dividing the pasture into four smaller sections. Each cow had pushed her head through the barbed wire fencing to to eat out of the other cow’s field. The title of the painting was “The Grass Is Always Greener.” This painter could have substituted people for cows.

We discover as we age the truth of the matter, and it’s this: if you are not happy with yourself relevant to what you own or what you have achieved, then success will be an elusive mirage that may never become reality. Several people who have won the lottery were interviewed who had won the lottery—the Pandora-positive box that we can open to solve all our problems. We then discover that having all that money does not guarantee more success, give you everything you want, or make you happy. Sometimes, it only means you have bigger problems, because you could not afford to get that deep in debt without the lottery money or what it represents as prosperity. No material thing, business you own, place you work, community service you contribute to, or political office can fulfill you until you are happy with yourself. Sometimes a simple life is the true route to success. A simple life is not laissez-faire—living without a worry at all—problems are always going to exist, so you must deal with reality. I am not a negative person—actually very positive—but the one thing I can share is the need to be happy with yourself for your own fulfillment. Vacation is only two weeks a year to prevent boredom, because even a happy routine life creates boredom. Some believe boredom should create change or provide something different as the perfect answer to life’s challenges for success. God may have put obstacles in your life, knowing the future is unrevealed to you. My grandfather told me something that I believe to this very day as I grow older and realize the wisdom of his words: “Memories, happiness, everything in life is built around the people IN your life—those that enter, exit and interact with you. IF you want something, regardless of what it is, a price must be paid. Sometimes that price is your time, money or family relations. There are many different ways things may manifest the value of exchange. It has been said that time is money and money represents time, but the only time success comes before work is in the dictionary. Keep a positive outlook, a happy face, and take care of yourself by surrounding yourself with people you like, and in my opinion, you will establish a foundation to be the most successful person that you have ever known.” HewittChamber.com Hewitt Chamber Express | 15

MAKE NETWORKING WORK FOR YOU

Network to build relationships LAURA BEATY-BURKE, FRUITFUL MARKETING AGENCY

What exactly is networking?

W

hen you hear the word “networking,” you may think of an aggressive salesperson working a room, but at its core, networking is about starting and building relationships. Doing business is a natural result of getting to know people— the more you get to know others and they get to know you, the more trust they’ll have in you, and the more likely they’ll also refer people to you. There are many networking opportunities in the greater Hewitt and Waco area. Attending at least one networking event per month is a great goal to keep you plugged in. Building relationships is also a lifelong pursuit that requires an open mind and conscious effort. Be active in your community—join civic groups, take leadership positions in volunteer organizations, take continuing education classes, volunteer on projects of special interest to you, or join a church. The stronger our relationships are, the stronger our communities and economies become, and the richer our lives are. People do need people, and we like to do business with those we like, know and trust. Here are a few helpful tips. • Read event details to know what to expect, and to get to know the hosting organization. You can even review a list of its members to get a feeling for who will be in attendance.

• If there is someone specific you want to connect with, look for mutual contacts and ask them to introduce you. Event hosts are often happy to make introductions.

• Bring business cards, have them easily accessible and hand them out generously. • As you build relationships, find opportunities to help others succeed. Ask questions (‘What are you working on?’ or ‘How can I help?’). Provide value by finding ways to help make others more successful (common areas of interest are health, wealth and raising children). Be careful not to keep score. Relationships are about give and take, but keeping score can be damaging. If you need help, ask for it! The worst thing that can happen is that they’ll say no. Be a connector by finding opportunities to introduce people to one another, and have a positive mindset—if they succeed, you succeed.

Once you become a master networker, really think about the message you want to send when you’re interacting with people. Take time to reflect on your own brand, and know your values and strengths. What do you bring to the table? What do you want people to think of when they hear your name? If you’d like to read more on the subject, check out Never Eat Alone, How to Win Friends & Influence People or The Art of Mingling.
