ccountability is a big word that gets thrown around when talking about making lasting changes. They may be professional or personal, but the fact remains, accountability makes lasting change far more likely to happen.

In fact, according to the American Society of Training & Development, our likelihood of achieving a goal if you simply make the decision to do so is 40%. Think about your lifetime of New Year’s resolutions. When making a goal with a specific accountability appointment with someone, that percentage soars to 95%...let that sink in for a minute. Accountability is important, no doubt, but implementing an accountability program in our own lives is less clear. Start with a goal. If you don’t know where you are going, you are guaranteed not to get there. Do you want to write a book? Live a healthier lifestyle? Expand your business? Whatever it is you want to do, use the SMART goal model at right and you are ready to go. The goals have to be measurable. It is far more difficult to hold someone accountable for a goal of ‘get healthy’ than the goal of ‘eat 3 servings of vegetables per day,’ or ‘drink only one 8-ounce soda each week’. If you are unsure of the SMART goal system, Google is well equipped to clear that up for you. 4 | Hewitt Chamber Express Fall 2018

Once you have your goal, your next–and most crucial–step is to find your tribe. This sounds easy enough, but it isn’t so much. There is a saying that we are the average of the seven peoplewith whom we spend the most time in our lives. I am not knocking your seven, but you want someone a step up from them. Stretch. Take a chance. Be scared. Find someone that makes you want to do better, who makes you want to be better. You want your accountability tribe to consist of people that you wholeheartedly want to impress. I have reached out to the author of books that helped shape my industry and CEOs of very successful companies. Be scared, but also be brave. Even if they tell you no, you have complimented someone you admire simply by asking. There are people who are not good options regardless of how much you like him or her. Your spouse is at the top of this list, with parents, siblings and children falling in right behind. These close relationships have a lot of history and emotion that will get tangled up in your efforts. Here is an example: if I allow my husband to be my accountability partner in developing a healthier lifestyle, at some point, and for whatever reason, I am going to mistake his accountability efforts as a demonstration that he is unsatisfied with my physical appearance. I do not plan for, nor do I want that to happen, it is just better Continued on page 5...

ACCOUNTABILITY continued from page 4

SMART GOALS

to be safe than sorry. You also do not want coworkers or other peers within your field to be your accountability partner. This is a great way to create trust issues.

Specific

You want a partner that is honest, successful in his or her own right, smart, and is someone who demonstrates a lot of integrity. Anyone you ask will be honored, I assure you. If you find the perfect person and they say no, don’t be discouraged. Keep trying. Finally, it is important to meet regularly. Once-a-month accountability isn’t going to work, and neither is every day. Once a week is where I have found that sweet spot. Get together face-to-face, because it is harder to say our excuses in person. Schedule a regular lunch and be real about why you didn’t do what you had hoped. It is in these honest revelations that you and your partner will discover where the hangup really lies. (Spoiler: it almost always has to do with fear.) It is a nice setup when you can hold your partner accountable as well. Lunches and meetings can become mutually beneficial. This is a very special relationship that will become increasingly important as you both realize that you are changing your story (and your world) one meeting at a time.

Clearly state what your goal is. Do not be vague. Example: Instead of setting a goal to get fit, set a goal to run a 12-minute mile.

Measurable How will you track or evaluate your progress? In our example, you’ll reach your goal when you are able to run a mile within 12 minutes.

Attainable Your goal should be challenging,

S M A R T

but possible. In our example, a

Specific Measurable Attainable

15-minute or 20-minute mile might be a more attainable goal to start with, depending on the current fitness level of the individual.

Relevant Is the goal consistent with your short-term and long-term plans? Does it help you reach the

Relevant Time-bound

quality of life you wish to have?

Time-bound Give yourself a deadline. Example: I will run a 12-minute mile by April 1, 2019.

A haunted Hewitt?

BRADLEY T. TURNER AND CHARLES D. TURNER

The Hermit of the Woods

The Animal House

The Legend of the “Hermit of the Woods” began a century ago along a small patchwork of cedar trees that stood near the southern end of present-day Hewitt, toward Lorena. The legend began during the late 19th century when numerous locals reported being chased by a club-toting, hairy mad man dressed in tattered, threadbare rags. Initial reports rumored the hermit to be a ghost, because he only approached travelers at night or daybreak. Soon after the bizarre reports began circulating around Hewitt hangouts, several inquisitive peace officers investigated the juniper thicket and reported only finding a crude grass hut surrounded by hundreds of fleshless animal bones. According to legend, the vagrant was an escaped convict who had broken off of a chain gang while working along the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (MKT/Katy) rail lines. To this day, the fate of the hermit remains a mystery.

There once stood a meager home at the dead end of West Johnson Street, alongside the railroad in Hewitt. According to legend, the original homeowner loved, housed and fed dozens of feral and stray domesticated animals at the location. Most renditions of the legend include that the homeowner lived alone, and considered the animals his/her companions. Neighbors claimed that even bobcats and mountain lions had appeared around the old shack along the tracks.

A formal news report of this legend appeared in the April 8, 1893 printing of the Dallas Morning News.

6 | Hewitt Chamber Express Fall 2018

Eventually, the owner died and the house fell into disrepair, but some local residents relayed that the animals continued their sporadic callings. As the years passed and residential construction boomed, Hewitt grew into a series of developed neighborhoods, and the condemned “Animal House” was razed—but today, an occasional commuter reports seeing odd creatures wandering the tracks near the old abandoned lot.

JARED DeVRIES

A

s Community Development Coordinator, my work for the City of Hewitt involves answering questions about zoning regulations and ordinances, receiving construction plans on commercial and residential developments, assembling agendas for the Board of Adjustment and Planning and Zoning Commission, and sometimes scheduling building inspections when coworkers are out of the office. I strive to help the vision of the city come to fruition through the plans of its citizens. We take great pride in helping the community achieve its goals through engagement, expertise and inspiration. At an individual level, I try to enable myself to be the best I can be through: 1) Identifying my goals, 2) Activating and empowering my motivation, and lastly, 3) Seeing it through.

Identifying My Goals When I receive plans for residential or commercial developments in Hewitt, I am on the front lines of observing a specific vision for someone’s dream. Plans for a bake shop to share delicious family recipes? Plans for renovating a building for a Karate dojo or a new home for a growing family? These instances are dreams born out of hard work and goal-setting. When I want to change or improve myself, I must first identify what I need to change or improve. Specificity is critical because it narrows the scope of what I plan on accomplishing.

Activating and Empowering My Motivation After plans have been submitted to our office, they are reviewed by the Development Review Committee 8 | Hewitt Chamber Express Fall 2018

(DRC), which makes sure that the plans meet required engineering standards. If necessary, plans are modified in order to meet the minimum safety standard required by law. Expertise provided by the City Engineer and the Fire Chief, as well as the rest of the staff at Community Services help form an insight that contributes to the utility of the development for the city. In the same way, I seek counsel and expertise in helping me stay motivated. “If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room is a quote that drives me to surround myself with people that will help me hold myself accountable to my goals.

Seeing it Through Once building permits have been pulled, construction can begin. Building inspections are called in to make sure that the building is progressing in a safe and timely fashion. Communication between contractors and building officials is critical because it helps the construction process avoid misunderstandings. When we face obstacles in achieving our goals, feedback allows us to identify factors that keep us from achieving our best self. To conclude, the realization of all three components of planning and building a better city realizes the shared dream of a commercial or residential vision come to life. Likewise, when planning and building a better you this season, remember to identify your goals, empower your motivation to act on your goals and to see it through to the end!

MIDWAY

Doing our “home” work...

POCKETS OF GROWTH: Templeton Demographics identified areas of housing development totaling almost 2,800 future homes planned within Midway ISD in the next 10 years. There are between 250-300 homes being added each year. New home sales account for 20% of the district’s housing market.

STUDENT DENSITY: Purple dots indicate where each MISD student lives and stars show where current Midway campuses exist. In prepation for growth, the district purchased properties for future campuses on Ritchie Road by the water tower, on Old Temple Road adjacent to Warren Park, and acreage in Speegleville.

CAMPUS CAPACITY: More than half of MISD campuses are over 90% capacity and South Bosque Elementary is currently operating over capacity.

Increase productivity through a

9Round Fitness

healthy lifestyle JERRY SNIDER

O

ne could argue that Henry Ford created the fast and furious culture we live in today. His idea of a moving assembly line to build automobiles pushed productivity through the roof. This was great for manufacturing at the time, establishing Ford a place on the map. With the advent of computer technology, productivity numbers have skyrocketed once more. Computers are so fast now that people have lost their jobs—because a computer can do it faster. So how do we increase our productivity as humans? Whether you are a business-owner, an employee or a stay-at-home parent, living a healthy lifestyle will increase your productivity. Unfortunately, most Americans are not living a healthy lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2014, 70.7% of Americans are overweight or obese. As a country, we are not healthy, and it shows in our productivity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2017, the U.S. is in a business cycle with the lowest percent increase of labor productivity since the Great Depression. It’s pretty easy to see that the more unhealthy we become, the less productive we become. So how do we change this? I’m sure you’re thinking this is where I tell you to eat right and exercise. True, but let’s see why those healthy choices relate to productivity. In 2014, Business Insider published an article titled 6 Daily Habits Of The World’s Most Successful CEOs. The six habits they identified are: 1) Get up early, 2) Exercise regularly, 3) Meditate daily, 4) Cut back on meetings, 5) Organize the details and 6) Cultivate creativity. Several of these habits are signs of a healthy lifestyle. The first three on the list are all items that can easily be put into a routine if you are willing to make the changes necessary. A byproduct of waking up early is that you must go to sleep early, which means less time binge watching television from your couch. Cutting back on meetings and organizing the details will create focus for the tasks of the day, resulting in less stress. Cultivating creativity in your business or home reduces stress. This brings a flavor of excitement and newness into each day. As detailed in my book, Confidence Through Health, living a healthy lifestyle will increase your self-confidence. Increased self-confidence always increases productivity. It’s a natural response to a healthy lifestyle. For more information on how to transition to a healthy lifestyle, visit www.allinhealthandwellness.com, or reach out to me via email at jerry@allinhealthandwellness.com or call (254) 307-0613.

Ask the Experts How Fire-Safe Is Your Home? Conduct a fire safety walkthrough of your home on a regular basis. Use the following tips to help: • Keep clothes, blankets, curtains, towels and other items that can easily catch on fire at least 3' from space heaters, and away from stove burners. • Place space heaters where they will not tip over easily. • Have chimneys cleaned/inspected every year by a professional. • Always use a metal mesh screen with fireplaces and leave glass doors open while burning a fire. • Never leave cooking unattended. • Be sure your stove and small appli- ances are off before going to bed. • Check for worn wires and do not run cords under rugs or furniture. • Never overload electrical sockets. • If using plug-in scents, check them often as they can overheat and catch fire. Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it frequently with your family and pets. Designate a meeting place outside. Make sure everyone knows two ways to escape from every room. Never stand up in a fire, always crawl low under the smoke, and try to keep your mouth covered. Never return to a burning building for any reason: it may cost you your life. Having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of survival.

Need a logo? Tips to working with a graphic designer

Drink up! Preventing dehydration in seniors

Need a new logo? Need help with updating a brochure or marketing piece?

When a person uses or loses more water and other fluids than their body takes in, they face dehydration. Left unchecked, it can become life-threatening. Here are ways family members and caregivers can help prevent dehydration in older loved ones: • Keep fluids in a water bottle or lidded cup with a straw near the senior day and night. • Check regularly that the senior’s urine is light-colored and output is sufficient. • Serve a variety of high-water-content foods such as fruits, soups, broths, vegetables and smoothies. • The senior should not skip meals. Much of a senior’s fluids comes from foods. • Ensure the senior avoids the con- sumption of too much caffeine and alcohol–both can dehydrate the body. • In warmer weather, schedule outdoor activities for the cooler part of the day. • Monitor the senior’s daily fluid intake by creating a hydration schedule. It is better for the senior to sip liquids every hour than drink extra at a meal. • Consult with the senior’s doctor about changing medications if the elder is taking laxatives or diuretics.

Ask colleagues and/or friends who they would recommend, contact a local printing company or a Chamber of Commerce for referrals. Contact the designer, let them know what you need, ask how they charge for their work, decide if their rate fits your budget and if you like their communication style (very important). Ask if they have a website and take a look at it. Seeing their style will let you know if they could handle what you need. For the first meeting, bring samples of colors/fonts/layout styles you like. A good designer will ask a lot of questions to determine exactly what your preferences are before they begin—both to meet your design goal on the first try, and to save you money on their time/design fee. Ask as many questions as you’d like, too. If you’re not 100% happy with their first draft, let them know! If you’re happy with your experience, refer others to them! Call By Design at (254) 420-1880 with any questions or to chat about your design needs. By Design is located in Waco, near the corner of Hwy. 84 and Hwy. 6.
