A picture is worth 1,000 words CHARLIE TURNER • CITY OF HEWITT MAYOR

I

t’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, to which every picture has its own detailed story. There are two paintings in particular that depict the “bygone days of yesteryear.” To revisit the past, one only has to visit today’s Hewitt Public Library. Upon entering, one cannot help but notice volumes of books spanning the entire room. Upon arrival to the reading room, you will discover Ella Frosch’s painting of Hewitt hanging on the wall (circa 1905). It shows a sleeping agricultural community complete with wooden buildings in the downtown business district, providing goods and services to those that lived near and far. You will also see a general store, bank, grocery store, post office, blacksmith shop and drugstore. In addition, there’s a horse-drawn wagon traveling in the direction of a cotton gin and railroad depot. A steam engine train is shown arriving to the community of Hewitt. A lone horse is tied to a hitching post beside the post office, and across the street is the local doctor within her one-horse carriage. It was common knowledge back then that the doctor would sometimes board the train to travel into Waco to practice medicine at her office, returning to Hewitt in the evening on another train. This train provided transportation from Hewitt to Waco and many points to the North, South, East and West. The picture shows a simple time in the history of Hewitt. As I gazed at the picture, it rewarded me with a slower-paced experience I’m trying to describe in less than 1,000 words. For that moment, I went back in time to a Hewitt where people visited with one another, and I heard the sound of folks working at their daily tasks. There is soon to be another Ella Frosh original painting in the Library to recount when Hewitt progressed forward into the next century. As seen in the picture (seen at top right), a building that depicted 1890’s structure and style served the community as a church, part-time school, and community gathering place to allow citizens to interact, fellowship and exchange information. The larger building at the top of this picture located at Second and Graham Streets displayed the growth of First Baptist Church. The church was the only worship center in the area. Baptists would gather on a Sunday morning to worship, then allow Methodists 4 | Hewitt Chamber Express Summer 2019

to use the church for their services as well. Because of the building’s size and location, it later served as one of the first schools and library in its later years. During one stormy season, it was said that the church was blown off its foundation! The red building in the painting below was Hewitt high school, built in 1921 to service the community until approximately 1947 when the Hewitt school system joined with South Bosque’s to create the new Midway school system.

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in the history of Hewitt, this writer is glad that there are paintings from people who lived this history so that all would know the beginnings of an agricultural community that now exists today as a thriving city.

Lifestyle tips for busy moms ALISSA CADY • EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GREATER HEWITT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

H

ave you ever wondered how working moms carry on day in and day out? Typical comments moms receive are, “I just don’t see how you do it,” “What’s your secret?” “You sure have your hands full,” or “I can’t even imagine life in your shoes.” Before revealing the inside scoop, let’s review a day in the life of a working mom. First, moms are already thinking about the long list of household and office To-Dos before her feet touch the floor in the morning. Shopping, cooking, dentist appointments, cleaning and building relationships are on one end of the spectrum—with professional deadlines, management and presentations on the other. Tip #1: Positivity and Confidence Embracing your own uniqueness and remaining positive are empowering and will assist with building confidence to create daily victories. No victory is too small! The world may not realize your children had a cereal fight during breakfast, or a meltdown in the car because they’re not wearing their favorite shoes. All life events play an important role in leadership development for both the professional environment and the instillation of core family values. Don’t sweat it, just keep going! Tip #2: Organization “If you fail to plan then you are planning to fail” is one of my all-time favorite quotes by Benjamin Franklin. I’ve found that planning our days in advance alleviates the morning rush, and we’re then one step ahead in conquering the day. Checklists and preparation will help to properly schedule appointments and meetings. • Lay out clothes

• Review daily planner

• Pack/label lunches

• Complete homework

• Load the car

• Story time

• Laundry

• Baths and bedtime

• Confirm appointments • Weekly Drop-off and Pick up schedule organization

8 | Hewitt Chamber Express Summer 2019

Catch up on school communication and personal errands during lunch hours in order to spend more time with family on the weekends. Throw a load of laundry in each evening after dinner to avoid spending your Sundays on laundry! Consistent routines and time management skills will develop when systems are in place. Tip #3: Balance and Appreciation Prioritize tasks by level of urgency. Adapting quickly and having back-up plans in place can transition a worst-case scenario situation into strengthening your character. I’m extremely fortunate to have a local family support system that caters to our action-packed lifestyle. Remember to show your appreciation by keeping family and work separate. It’s comforting to realize there’s not a right or wrong way in tackling your day—it’s what works for you and your family. Remember to breathe, and that the idea of achieving total perfection is not possible. However, striving to be the very best you can be—both for your family and in the workplace will design a pathway to excellence and help balance different environments. Just keep going—you’ll be fine.
