he Waco-McLennan County Public Health District would like to keep our community updated on the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation. As of this edition’s printing, the information that follows was current; however, it will likely change over the next few hours or days until the next update. Key Points: Waco-McLennan County Public Health Department (WMCPHD) has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) situation. Due to recent spread of the disease to other areas outside of China, we want to ensure that you have current information available. If you or someone else has had recent travel to any of the affected international locations (China, Iran, South Korea; Europe [Schengen Area]: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City; United Kingdom and Ireland: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland within the past 14 days AND is/are exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath OR has come in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, please call (254) 750-1890. Risk • The potential public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high, both globally and to the United States. Individual risk is dependent on exposure. • Under current circumstances, certain people will have an increased risk of infection. For example: • People in communities where ongoing community spread with the virus that causes COVID-19 has been reported are at elevated (though still 4 | Hewitt Chamber Express Spring 2020

relatively low) risk of exposure. • Healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-19 are at elevated risk of exposure. • Close contact to persons with COVID-19 also are at elevated risk of exposure. • Travelers returning from affected international locations where community spread is occurring also are at elevated risk of exposure. Protection Measures Individuals can prevent exposure to COVID-19 simply by following the same process that we use for influenza prevention: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60-95% alcohol content. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Stay home if/when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a lined trashcan. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with EPA-certified household cleaners. Waco-McLennan County Public Health District Actions WMCPHD is working closely with community partners, including healthcare organizations to respond to this public health threat. The public health response is multi-layered, with the goal of detecting and minimizing introductions of this virus in McLennan County to reduce the spread and the impact of this virus. Special thanks to the McLennan County Health Department for providing us with this information.

Library expanding childrens’ services WAYNETTE DITTO • EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HEWITT PUBLIC LIBRARY

I

n 2017, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission approved funding for 36 Texas libraries to address early learning priorities in their communities, and to ensure that all children enter school ready and able to learn through training provided by Family Place Libraries™. The Hewitt Public Library was one of the 36 selected to begin this program. With a core vision is to expand the traditional role of children’s services, Family Place™ builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children’s growth and development.

Based on research about the importance of early brain development, the Family Place Library™ supports the essential role of parents as a child’s first teachers, and addresses the physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspects of child development to help build a foundation for learning during critical first years of life. By partnering and working with other social, health and educational services providers, the Family Place™ model positions libraries as key early childhood and family support organizations within the local community.

April will be the anniversary of our two-year partnership with Family Place Libraries™ and we have seen a difference in the entire Hewitt community. Newborns, toddlers and their parents can come to Hewitt Public Library and learn. Some of the key features of a Family Place Library™ include parentchild workshops, collaborations with other area agencies, age-appropriate programming, and trained librarians who provide family support. The Family Place Libraries™ Workshops have had an incredible impact on our community, connecting families to the library, the broader Hewitt area, and also to each other. More than any other library program, these workshops have facilitated development of deep relationships among parents. I’ve had several parents tell me that they met their best friends through our workshops. I was reminded once again how powerful this peer connection is when a family in our community suffered a terrible loss after the program began. I watched as the families who had met each other in our workshops came together to provide a strong support network for this family. I was so proud of these parents, and I was so very grateful that our library had the opportunity to provide the space and framework that precipitated the formation of such strong bonds. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the library, and I am available to discuss how you can become involved. Simply call (254) 666-2442 or stop by and see us at 200 Patriot Court in Hewitt. This project was made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act. Health & wellness common sense Protect yourself and others with basic infection control measures It is estimated that 80 percent of diseases are potentially transferred by touch. Touching food with contaminated hands has the ability to spread foodborne illnesses like Salmonella, E coli, Staph and diarrheal infection. Touching the face with contaminated hands spreads illnesses like pneumonia, cold and flu. Protection from these and the much-talked-about coronavirus calls for regularly applying proper hand-cleansing techniques.

Lori Robb, BSN, RN, TCRN Regional Director of Trauma Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Waco, Texas

Proper hand cleaning requires washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing 60-95% alcohol. Washing hands immediately after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose is crucial. Assure that children follow proper hand cleansing techniques, too. Other tips that may seem logical include: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash • Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces with wipes or cleaning spray

Time to take a personal inventory? True wellness is more than just exercise and eating healthy. Wellness incorporates the mind, body, and spirit. What you consume plays a big role in your overall wellness. Many of us are lacking in one area of wellness, and sometimes in more than just one. Here’s a quick exercise to evaluate exactly where you are. Set aside a few hours one day and remove all possible distractions—no electronics. Then take an inventory of everything you consume—from food, to forms of media, to the amount of sleep you get during an average week. If it’s something that has either a positive or negative effect on your life, you need to add it to the list. Categorize them by positive/negative and area of wellness...mind, body, and spirit. Now make a plan moving forward to increase the positive and decrease the negative influences in your life. By doing so, your overall wellness will improve.”
