Look Who’s Here

Jaime Hayon. With celebrated work bridging art and industrial design, the singular Jaime Hayon proves more is more.

Klunderbie

If there is anyone in the world who can speak to the power of inspiration, it’s Jaime Hayon. Our man on stage is a prolific industrial designer and artist based in Madrid who has been turning out iconbound designs for more than 15 years. His playful and energetic personality emanates from an impressively diverse body of work that ranges from furniture and artistic installations to wristwatches and lighting. In recent years, he’s been making a name for himself in interior design as well. His work for leading hotels, restaurants, and retail spaces has evolved into a platform for creating unique objects and elements both functional—and not. Hayon’s resumé is extensive and varied, reflecting a mind that’s always searching for fresh inspiration from sometimes unlikely sources. He studied industrial design in Madrid and Paris before joining Fabrica, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy in Italy, where he directed the design department from 1997 to 2003. Hayon set up his own studio

practice in 2000 and has fully dedicated himself to his personal projects since 2003. That year, the art exhibit “Mediterranean Digital Baroque” at London’s David Gill Gallery cemented his reputation as one to watch. Many more exhibitions and installations in major galleries and museums around the world followed. Today, his work is part of many permanent collections. In 2008, Hayon was guest of honour at Belgium’s Interieur Biennial, a position held in previous years by world-famous design personalities such as Verner Panton, Konstantin Grcic, and Philippe Starck. At just 34 years old, he was the youngest person ever to receive the distinction. Hayon’s relevance and significance continues to grow at a rapid clip. Already a double award-winner of the Elle Deco International Design Awards, in 2016 the publication anointed him Designer of the Year, citing him as the “exuberant, rebellious and talented Spanish designer, back in the limelight once again.” Similar accolades have come from other top publications including Time, Wallpaper, Icon Magazine, and AD Russia. Easily one of the most visionary creators of our time, Jaime Hayon is one of the most inspiring and influential as well.

Matteo Cibic. Unabashedly joyful and creatively unbridled, Matteo Cibic blazes new trails in the design world.

Davide Gallizio

A dreamlike bestiary of ceramic characters. Rideable sculptures. A mobile tree trolley outfitted with a wi-fi hotspot. The backpack of the future. These examples alone illustrate the creative vibrancy and allure of Vicenza, Italy-based Matteo Cibic’s work, but it’s also his own irreverent sense of humor that draws you into his world. Though he’s been in the design scene for only 10 years, Cibic is fully emerged. Working in product design, communication, exhibition design, and fashion design, he’s developed products and creative ideas for luxury brands, collectors, and tech companies. He’s known for creating objects with hybrid functions and anthropomorphic and joyful shapes— a “rideable” desk shaped like a life-sized horse, and his 366-day series of vases with noses, are prime examples. Cibic’s works of art and design are displayed in museums, institutions, and galleries worldwide. Recently lauded as

the “2017 Young Design Talent” by Elle Deco International Design Awards, Cibic has been spotlighted in top publications such as Newsweek International, Departure Magazine, L’Uomo Vogue, Ideat, AD India, Marie Claire Maison, and more... and that’s just in this past year. So where did this creative ambition come from? In a recent interview with Max Fraser of Newsweek, Cibic shared that as a child, he first imagined becoming the Pope, and later, the next Michael Jordan. But he credits his uncle with setting him on the course of industrial design. “One summer I observed the design studio and working life of my uncle Aldo, and I loved it.” (“Uncle” is design legend Aldo Cibic, founding member of the 1980s Memphis Group). Cibic the younger studied art and design in London and art, design, and architecture in Milan, and then spent time at Fabrica, Benetton’s renowned research center before launching his own firm in 2007. Cibic’s work is whimsical and playful, a result of his personal ethos: “I only work with people I like, on things that make me happy,” he muses. Inspiring words to live—and design—by.

Camille Walala.

Tracey Lester

The London-based pattern pro turns her brights on.

The colorful, iconoclastic work of East London-based designer Camille Walala is hard to miss. Chances are you’ve seen it emblazoning venues and buildings across London, Sydney, New York and beyond— from retail displays for Le Printemps in Paris that splashed graphic, primary prints across classical sculptures to an immersive, psychedelic pop-up bar in Sydney to a street art mural in London that proclaimed “play more, dance more.” She’s even created a trio of trippy, handpainted, limited edition chocolate Easter eggs for Harrods. Whatever the scale, her eye-popping work exudes an optimistic, exuberant energy that’s earned her a loyal following among art and design intelligentsia. A graduate in Textile Design from the University of Brighton, Walala’s namesake brand was established in East London in 2009, where she continues to live. Influences include the Memphis Movement, the Ndebele tribe of South Africa, whose women paint their houses with powerful and colourful patterns, and Optical Art master Vasarely—alongside the simple desire to put a smile on people’s faces.

Her signature “Tribal POP” style presents a boundless energy for show-stopping and social spaces—“the bigger the better,” she says. (Her largest commission to date was painting a four-story building in London’s Shoreditch with vibrant zig-zags, in 2015). Recent work has seen her progressing from her popular textile-based range to include art direction, interior design, and a continued love affair with popup restaurants, where her passion for food and design are brought to life. Her clients include schools, festivals, clubs, and international brands such as Nintendo, XOYO, Koppaberg, Bompas &Parr, Darkroom, Barbican Festival and Land of King. Though she was born in France and has worked all over, she’s found London to be a fertile place to develop her career and oeuvre. As she told a reporter for the Globe and Mail in 2016, “London is an amazingly creative city. You meet so many people who have the same desires as you. It can be overwhelming at first, but it is also so inspiring!” Anyone who’s seen Walala’s vigorously vibrant work—equal parts overwhelming and inspiring—could say the same thing.

Kate Arends. Designer, blogger, and digital dynamo Kate Arends hits the big-time. Over the past

9 years, Arends has worn many hats, from graphic designer to blogger to multichannel marketing consultant to product designer. But whether she’s penning design stories for her uber-popular life-style blog, Wit & Delight (3.1 million unique followers and counting), or designing tech and home goods collections for Target, she seeks out humor and beauty in all things. Those dual interests inspired the name of her blog, which she established in 2009 while working as a graphic designer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As she explains, “’Wit’ refers to a sharpness and quirkiness to the process, while ‘Delight’ is a reminder to find the joy and the humor in each step.” Arends now lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has parlayed her branding, graphic, and product design expertise to launch Wit & Delight Studio, a firm that specializes in creative and multichannel

development and creating brands from the ground up. They offer re-branding, high-level communications strategy, graphic design, art direction and content creation for nationally renowned brands including 3M, Fossil, and Red Wing Heritage. Additionally, Arends’ design work has been published in AIGA 365, Communication Arts, and Print Magazine. In 2014 and 2016, Wit & Delight launched limited-edition product lines with Target. Ever since, Arends has been consulting with a handful of other retail clients on product development and digital marketing. Indeed, it seems the sky is the limit for her future partnerships and collaborations. Recently, Arends has also applied her design know-how to shape the interiors of her own home in St. Paul—an undertaking that has turned the tables on this designworld personality, with myriad publications and blogs sharing, posting, and re-posting images of the sophisticated, playful, and functional living spaces she’s created for her own family.

Camille is influenced by the work of the Memphis Group, South Africa’s Ndebele tribe and op-art pioneer Victor Vasarely, but her gleefully asymmetric patterns and eye-popping approach to colour are entirely her own. Her clients include schools, festivals, clubs, and international brands, and she is always on the lookout for larger-scale spaces to transform. Look Who’s Here

Glenn Lawson & Grant Fenning

Bethany Nauert

The founders of cult furniture brand Lawson-Fenning embody California cool. Thinking local comes naturally to Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning, the duo behind the beloved Los Angeles furniture design studio and shop Lawson-Fenning. The pair met as furniture design students at ArtCenter College in the late 1990s, bonding over a shared appreciation for midcentury design—“California’s contemporary golden age of design and craft,” as they put it. They began collaborating shortly after, designing furniture in a shared studio space in Pasadena. When people began walking in off the street to buy pieces, they knew they were on to something. Fast-forward twenty years, and they’re still hunting for and dreaming up the pieces they love, albeit on a larger retail scale: a two-story Melrose Avenue flagship; a neighborhood store in Silverlake; and a separate LF workshop where they still hand-craft every piece of customizable furniture. The duo’s latest offering is a shop-

in-shop at the Lawson-Fenning flagship— a “designer’s dirty secret” that stocks smaller accessories like limited-release ceramics, tabletop items, and gifts. From the company’s own midcenturyinspired furnishings to the vintage finds on offer at the two shops, Lawson-Fenning is a true California brand, translating the raw natural beauty of Southern California— the desert, the beach, the mountains— with a contemporary vernacular rooted in mid-century lines. The founders pride themselves on their company’s ethos of local manufacturing, their commitment to the LA design community, and their audience of both professional designers and enthusiasts. “We are sincere in our mission to provide a hub of knowledge and vintage-modern design for anyone,” they say. “Even if you don’t go hunting for Soleri bells or Arne Norell on the weekend, we are an accessible alternative to mass-production or cliché knockoff. We believe aspirational is attainable.” Hear, hear.

IDS Vancouver 2017

Look Who’s Here

Alexa Hampton. A master of luxurious interiors shares her secrets on stage. For a lauded interior

designer at the helm of an iconic firm known for its contemporary yet classical design, Alexa Hampton is surprisingly irreverent and witty in person. It’s this combination of ease and forthrightness, combined with traditional glamour and formality, that makes her design work so winning, too. In 1998, after her father, the celebrated interior designer Mark Hampton, passed away, the younger Hampton took over his New York City-based company, Mark Hampton LLC. He founded the firm in 1976, and in his 22 years at its helm, he’d accumulated an impressive array of accolades; among them, he was designated an “Icon of American Design” by journalists, and posthumously celebrated by Architectural Digest in January 2010 as one of “The World’s Twenty Greatest Designers of All Time.” His work included commissions at the White House for President Bush Sr. and President Clinton; at Gracie Mansion, the residence of New York’s mayor; and the American Embassy in Paris. Inheriting and leading a world famous company while growing both its client roster and its contemporary relevance is no

small feat, yet Hampton has done so with graceful aplomb. She has completed a wide range of designs for domestic and international projects, from New York City to Hangzhou, China, including apartments and large residences, private airplanes and yachts. A perennial member of Architectural Digest’s AD100 and House Beautiful’s Top Designer list as well as a member of Elle Décor’s A-list, Hampton’s work is classic, and eclectic. She is the author of two critically acclaimed books, The Language of Interior Design, and Decorating in Detail, and is a contributing columnist for The Wall Street Journal’s Saturday “Off Duty” section. In addition to being the creative director of The Mine, Hampton has a growing stable of acclaimed products for the home including fabrics and trims for Kravet Inc., her own furniture line for Hickory Chair Co. and its sister furniture line at Kravet, carpets for Stark Carpet, lighting for Visual Comfort & Co., and more. Don’t miss the chance to hear this dynamic speaker take the stage for an intimate, wide-ranging chat with Michelle Newbery, president of The Mine, exploring the importance of mixing high and low, tips drawn from a lifetime of design, and how to achieve authentic sophistication in the home.

Exploring the Pacific. In its fourth year, the Exchange showcases designers from across the world and across cultures.

Last year IDS Vancouver focused on Eindhoven, Netherlands, and this year the spotlight is on Japan’s contemporary design hub, Tokyo. Curated by Design Milk, the booth is the first one to greet attendees as they walk into the Convention Centre. Designed by Vancouver-based FSOARK Architect, the installation displays products from Tokyo-based studios we+ and Design for Industry. “Jaime Derringer [of Design Milk] and I have been following Design for Industry since founder Daisuke Kitagawa’s Nod Lamp, and we thought their sleek design sensibility would really resonate with our trade and general audience,” explains IDS Vancouver director, Jody Phillips. “I met we+ at Rossana Orlandi in Milan this past Spring and was so inspired by how they bring together art and function.” She adds, “Tokyo is of huge interest for so many reasons—its diverse design scene also has such a balanced sensibility and attention to detail.” FSOARK is no stranger to installation work, as its principal Imu Chan often takes

on designing exhibits and conceptual pieces as a way to push himself and his team further in their explorations of design. Chan, who has both visited and lived temporarily in Tokyo in the past, designed an installation entitled “X,” so-called for its namesake shape, which brings the concept of “exchange” into 3-D. The lower bar is characterized as a bridge and the upper bar as a pier, “metaphorically bridging the geographic separation between Japan and Vancouver,” says Chan. “Typical booth layouts encourage visitors to go in and weave through the space. In our case, it’s different; we turned it completely inside out, creating four wedge shapes you can interact with.” The structure in the 400-square-foot space is made from whitewashed timber, with a floor covering that is a synthetic, tatami-like mat made in Japan in contrasting black. Chan and his team have worked closely with the designers from we+ and Design for Industry to make sure they hit the right notes. “It needed the feel of emptiness and lightness surrounding the products— a quiet feel,” Chan explains. “It is designed to be more like a gathering place than a booth.” With this, Tokyo brings it home at IDS Vancouver.

Always a beehive of buzzy activity, the GRAY Stage is one of the most anticipated features of the show. GRAY magazine provides this platform for smart design talks with some of North America’s top designers, architects, and innovators. The Tree House. Upon arriving at IDS Vancouver 2017, attendees will encounter the Tree House at the entrance of the show. The Tree House is an exploration of man-made material and natural form becoming one. Tracing the permutation from one state to the next, the 55-foot piece moves from human order to natural order. Show visitors begin by wandering through the front door of a house made from 3Form material. A lit path seamlessly transforms the piece into an organic, tree-like shape made from cardboard. The passage serves as a portal to exploration and contemplation: a metaphysical object propositioning the viewer. We invite you to fully immerse yourself and connect the themes of materiality and exploration to the greater design fair.
