Welcome to IDS Vancouver 2018. This year, we introduce some new initiatives, reflecting our commitment to the greater design world and the West’s design community at large. Celebrating our 14th year, our 2018 theme, Surface and Depth, is a nod to the many notions of what design is, and what good design can be. Striking chairs, visually pleasing spaces, useful and innovative mechanisms and fixtures—all found here at our highly curated fair—are examples of good design aesthetic, but also how good design is deeper than looks alone. You’ll discover it’s considerate, and useful, and can solve problems big and small. Exciting programming this year includes a roster of dynamic speakers and content from cities around the world, including Helsinki, Frankfurt, Eindhoven, Verona, New York and Los Angeles. The West’s most enticing brands, partners and design talent are on exhibit. In an effort to foster an appreciation for design at an early age, we’re proud to introduce our new youth programming as we continue to encourage families to come and explore our features, exhibits and collaborations. And you’ll find our new book, Currents, onsite at Exit through the Gift Shop (and available online). It offers design enthusiasts cultural, material and industry insight—all ingredients of this region’s unique design DNA. On behalf of everyone at IDS Vancouver, our exhibitors, sponsors, special guests and speakers, thank you for your engagement and support. As we strive to help design thrive, we invite you to join us in reflecting on and appreciating all this region offers. Jody Phillips, IDS Vancouver Director

Official Colours. What happens when the authority on design meets the authority on colour? In collaboration with Benjamin Moore, we’re thrilled

to introduce to you the six Official Colours of IDS Vancouver 2018: Pink Flamingo, 14 Carrots, Spa Day, Honeybee, Antique Glass and Faded Violet. Aligning with this year’s theme “Surface and Depth,” these hues are chosen from the Aura Colour Stories collection. Each of the collection’s 240 colours is influenced by the light in a room, highlighting subtle undertones and characteristics, thus showcasing the depth of each shade in different lights. Made for the design and colour curious, these official shades will be used on various surfaces throughout the fair to illustrate the subjectivity of colour and all the nuances and variations therein. Visit the fair to witness these colours coming to life! Presented by

Central Bar. The Untitled (392 Sheets of Plywood) Central Bar installation at IDS Vancouver will be the next instance of material exploration by Origins CNC and Leckie Studio, a Vancouver-based studio known for creating material-driven and innovative architectural environments. For this installation, Leckie Studio and Origins CNC chose to work with a single generic material—local plywood—with the aim to create a spatial experience that is formed with a singular tectonic and material language. The pavilion is intended as a place of refuge for visitors over-stimulated by the show floor—a place to relax and get away from the busy surroundings, a place to enjoy and discover. Enclosed by 392 sheets of pine plywood, the space balances opposing forces of solid/void, open/closed and vertical/horizontal. The primary material connections are held in place with friction, via an interlocking assembly system, using no adhesives. The structure is perceived as a sculptural mass, with a contradictory nature of appearing both solid and transparent, depending on the angle from which it is viewed. It was designed to create a voyeuristic relationship between it and that of the bar and the surrounding area, cocooning and buffering visitors deep within its visual haven. Sponsored by

Ford received his Masters of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), where he completed his graduate thesis titled “Hip Hop Inspired Architecture and Design.” Ford has spent the past decade working to blur the lines between professional practice and academia. He is dedicated to stimulating cross-disciplinary discourse between practitioners and residents on the sociological and cultural implications of architecture and urban planning on its inhabitants. More specifically, Ford has unveiled the subconscious roles of historical architectural figures such as Le Corbusier in envisioning the built environments which necessitated the birth of hip hop culture. Ford’s Hip Hop Architecture research has been published in a variety of places including Fast Company, Blavity, The Fader, CityLab and Vibe Magazine. Along with these publications Ford has been a guest lecturer at several universities including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Detroit Mercy, University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University. Michael Ford was invited to keynote the 2017 American Institute of Architects National Conference on Architecture and

he delivered the keynote at 2016 SXSW Eco Conference in Austin, Texas. Through his years of research, publications and lectures, Michael Ford is recognized in the architectural and hip hop communities as a galvanizer and pioneer of a new era of architectural practitioners. Currently, Ford is an instructor in the architecture program at Madison College, and co-founder of the Urban Arts Collective, where he created and conducts The Hip Hop Architecture Camp™ with the mission to increase the number of minorities in architecture and urban planning. Ford is currently working with hip hop artists as he leads the programming and development of The Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx, New York. On Saturday, Ford will lead a full-day, immersive Hip Hop Architecture Workshop at IDS Vancouver for children aged 11 to 14, using hip hop culture as a catalyst to introduce youth to architecture and design. The young participants will explore hip hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding, conceiving and generating architecture for a just city. There is no typical student for The Hip Hop Architecture Workshop. Michael Ford’s students are aspiring architects, urban planners, hip hop artists, computer game creators, interior designers, industrial designers and more!

Look Who’s Here

Sebastian Herkner. Sebastian Herkner was born in 1981 in Bad Mergentheim, Germany. He studied product design

at the HfG Offenbach am Main (Offenbach University of Art and Design). During his studies, Herkner focused on designing objects and furniture that merged various cultural contexts and combined new technologies with traditional craftsmanship in order to highlight the multifaceted beauty of the materials and draw renewed attention to small details. and textures. Since founding his own design studio in Offenbach am Main in 2006, he has designed products for manufacturers such as Cappellini, ClassiCon, Dedon, Fontana Arte, Moroso, Pulpo, Thonet and Wittmann, as well as working on interior design projects and for exhibitions and museums. centered on the importance of experience, the studio creates unexpected and memorable moments that invite people to explore and engage with their surroundings. The firm’s name is drawn from Lewis Carroll’s “The Hunting of the Snark,” a poem describing the “impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature.” In its search for the unknown, Snarkitecture creates architectural-scale projects, installations and objects. By transforming the familiar into the extraordinary, Snarkitecture makes architecture perform the unexpected.

Look Who’s Here

Alberto Minotti. For Italian kitchen designer Alberto Minotti, there’s nothing more important than having passion for what you do. As the second-generation designer of Minotticucine, Minotti first saw this passion, drive and determination in his father, who founded the company in 1949. In 1999, Minotti overhauled the style and market position of the brand completely, and identified a new design path he defined as “Mediterranean minimalism” and “essentialism.” This new company vision was largely characterized by the use of one particular natural material: stone; and one central philosophy: visual silence. Hip Hop Architecture Caesarstone Stage IDCEC = 0.1 CEU, AIBC = 1 Core LU

Architect Michael Ford uses hip hop to explain how designers and planners have marginalized communities. It might not be obvious to fans, but hip hop lyrics speak even to ill-conceived architecture—touching on what it’s like to navigate life while being black or brown. Well-designed spaces shape an individual’s life and experiences, provide respite from the harsh realities of life, and allow access to basic needs such as transportation and food to isolated communities. What’s often not considered in the construction of highdensity neighbourhoods is the psychological and sociological impact of design and planning on those who live there.
