VIEW FROM THE TOP Greetings from South Wales! As always, it gives me great pleasure to thank you for being part of The Gow School. Our mission remains to positively teach students with dyslexia; to cultivate compassionate and highly trained teachers who know how to help students to succeed; offer dynamic college preparatory programming; a diverse athletic and arts program; and a well maintained, safe campus. The enclosed Annual Report provides an opportunity to recognize our many donors who, through their generosity, have helped Gow to thrive and offer a world class program. Many thanks for your belief in Gow. Several years ago, we created a three phase, ten year strategic plan. A glimpse in the rearview mirror shows that we have accomplished several of these goals including: • Strenghtening of the academic program as evidenced by 100% acceptance of seniors to colleges and universities; • Presentations by several faculty at national conferences; • Planning and construction of a new dining hall and engineering classroom spaces; • The introduction of foreign language to the curriculum; • Establishment of a school-wide Executive Function Coaching Program; and • Coeducation at Gow. After 18 months of including young women in the Gow community, I believe this has been a highly positive experience. This and more are possible thanks to the ongoing support of our alumni, parents and friends. It is now time to look ahead and develop plans for the next five to ten year phase. Former headmaster Norm Howard always said “plan accordingly”, and I think he would be pleased with our process. As I look to the future, there are several key components built into my vision for Gow: • Develop a more specific school-wide organizational skills system - For several years, we have offered Executive Function Skills Coaching for those students who seek enhanced organizational skills training. I want Gow to integrate stronger organizational skills programming for our students across the curriculum. • Upgrade student and faculty housing - As part of our campus plan, we intend to have all dormitories located on the south side of Emery Road. While some of the aging wooden dormitory structures are charming and cozy, they also require more upkeep and have reduced utilities efficiencies. Over the next few years, I see Gow adding two dormitories and retiring older ones. • Build a bridge across the Cazenovia Creek - The creek is no longer a boundary, but rather an invitation for field learning experiences, recreation, and imagination on Gow’s ski hill. Designing and building a natural material and steel foot bridge would be a learning based project. • Succession planning – We anticipate the retirement of several key leaders over the next five years. Work has begun to plant the seeds of succession by cultivating future senior managers. As we craft the next phases of our long range plan, we must consider new language in our mission statement to align ourselves with our current coeducational practice. As we increase the day student population, we must also ask the right questions about how many of these students we can support. Our short-term plan is to enroll no more than 17 day students because some academic sections are enrolled to capacity. I also have exciting ideas about wellness programs for our students and more learning projects involving travel and collaboration with colleges and universities. As we map out our new targets, we approach this from a position of considerable strength because of good governance, excellent teaching, passionate people, a universal belief in Gow’s culture of success, and disciplined fiscal behavior. Dear Gow friends,
What a pleasure to be able to thank so many of you for supporting The Gow School. Whether it be giving of your time, money or ideas, it all helps to make Gow a special place. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student who has struggled suddenly “get it”; to hear an alumnus tell of the journey that brought him to Gow and how that choice changed his future; or to bring so many of you together in meetings around the country. This year, we had Gow events in 35 cities. It’s always a pleasure to gather to talk about Gow. The school is doing well. We have no debt, healthy enrollment and a vision for the future that includes educating young ladies, renovating and updating living and teaching spaces on campus, and raising endowment funds to secure Gow for generations to come. We can only do these things because of your financial and emotional support, and for these, I thank you. We are here for you. Noted Chef Chad Sarno Visits Campus
Jean Basse (mom of Adam ‘15) is passionate about good, healthy food. To help students and faculty better understand the eating choices we make, she invited noted chef Chad Sarno, Director of Education for Whole Foods Markets Healthy Eating Program, to visit Gow for a weekend in May. While here, he prepared several delicious items for the audience to sample and demonstrated his cooking techniques. Whether a “chocolate” smoothie which actually contained spinach, or garbanzo beans disguised as chicken salad, the students and faculty alike enjoyed the chance to try some new foods. After morning assembly, Chad and Jean worked with a team of a dozen students in the kitchen to prepare and serve a gourmet meal for about 30 guests in the evening. Each of those students volunteered because of his interest in culinary arts, and the evening was a great (and delicious!) success. Chad has been a contributing chef to several recipe books and has been featured in many national publications. He has been a guest on dozens of morning shows and food focused programs on television and radio. Through the intersection of clean food and culinary education, Chad continues to share his passion for helping others achieve their health goals, starting in the kitchen. In his most recent project, Chad has teamed up with New York Times best selling author Kris Carr of Crazy Sexy Diet to write Crazy Sexy Kitchen: 150 Plant-Empowered Recipes to Ignite a Mouthwatering Revolution. GOW GALA AUCTION RAISES RECORD $137,000! Autographed Soccer Ball Auction Highlight Inspired by the accomplishments of this year’s undefeated Varsity Soccer Team, parent Mr. Frank Camenzuli (dad of Mark ‘14) bid $6,000 for a soccer ball signed by the team members. He donated the ball back to the school. The night of the auction, Mr. Camenzuli told the audience “They played together as a team. They believed in each other as a team, and they won and lost as a team. Not all had the same talent but all contributed in their own way to the overall goal of the team, which was to win. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi “We are all just ordinary people but when we come together as a team we can do extraordinary things.” To the players and the coaches, thank you for letting me share in your success.” Thank you to Frank Camenzuli for graciously recognizing the team’s many accomplishments.

The Gow Gala - A Night to Remember! Thanks to dozens of wonderful volunteers and the generosity of alumni, parents, businesses and friends, Gow’s auction was a resounding success. Hundreds of items were donated, and it was a terrific party, with something for everyone. The evening consisted of a sold out dinner in Gow’s dining hall, 73 silent auction items, dozens of baskets in the raffle, and eleven live auction items. Once again, Jay Mandarino ‘79, served as auctioneer and did a wonderful job of inspiring the audience to generously support a worthy cause. All proceeds from the evening benefitted health and wellness at Gow including a new Sport Court on campus (an outdoor basketball court, pictured below), health office renovations, athletic equipment and a speakers series focused on wise decision making. At the completion of the live auction, Jay invited the audience to “Raise the Paddle” to help Gow build a Sport Court. Within five minutes, $52,000 was raised! We are already planning for next year and hope you will be part of the fun! Even if you live far away, you could donate the use of a vacation home, restaurant gift certificates, sports tickets, merchandise, car rental certificates or anything else that you might like to win at an auction. The Bright Future of Gow’s STAR Science, Technology and Applied Research Building Named in Honor of Alice R. Gow With an entirely new look, it’s difficult to imagine that just a couple of years ago, the new technology building was the spot where 140 boys plus faculty and staff ate three meals every day. Thanks to the generosity of many, $1.2 million was raised in just a few months to create Gow’s latest Science Building. The former dining area now houses two science classrooms one for physics and another for biology, and a large seminar space. The former kitchen is now a dynamic, fully outfitted engineering lab. New windows and a very open design make this an ideal space for teaching, learning and creating. The funds raised were used to renovate and equip the STAR Building, plus an audiovisual studio was created in the former robotics lab, and an endowment was established to meet future program needs.

The centerpiece of the Engineering Lab is a new Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) Machine that will allow Gow to take its highly successful robotics program to the next level. Since the inception of a robotics program at Gow more than a decade ago, the robots designed by students (and their faculty advisors) have become more sophisticated. However, because many of the design elements had to be measured and cut manually, it could often take days of calculation (and sweaty palms!) to correctly cut a piece. With the CNC machine, students will learn to write the code needed to make the machine cut intricate pieces exactly and to build more “intelligent” robots. Jeff Poblocki, Director of Information Technology and the Robotics Program notes, “We have a terrific robotics program in place now. This class offers students the chance to realize their aptitude for engineering and technology that they might not have otherwise known they had. Each year, several Gow graduates go on to engineering school, and nearly all credit their robotics experience with igniting that interest. The CNC Machine will add another layer to the complexity of the projects we will be able to create.” Poblocki adds “This coming year will provide an opportunity to evaluate how we can fully incorporate the CNC into our program and enhance our curriculum. We hope to create summer engineering workshops and work more closely with local businesses to provide Gow students with opportunities to use this technology firsthand. We believe that Gow is the only high school in the country to offer such advanced technology and we look forward to welcoming business leaders and guests to campus to visit the lab and see student work firsthand.” On April 19 during Spring Parents Weekend, Gow School friends and family gathered to dedicate the building in honor of Alice Gow, wife of David Gow, Emeritus Headmaster. Alice and her family were present for the dedication ceremony and it was a wonderful opportunity to thank the many donors who made this building possible.

IZER MARTINEZ ‘13 NAMED ONE OF TOP 25 GRADUATES IN COUNTRY BY BUSINESS INSIDER MAGAZINE The 25 Most Impressive Kids Graduating From High School This Year

They're barely 18 years old, but these high school students are doing more than most adults could ever hope to do in their lifetimes. Their resumes will make your jaw drop: There's a scientist who built a nuclear reactor in his father's garage, a swimmer who won four Olympic gold medals, and a self-taught coder who runs his own app development company. And more importantly, they prove that age really has no bearing on what people are able to accomplish. Listed in alphabetical order, we found the 25 most impressive students graduating from high school this year.
Izer Martinez battled dyslexia to become a competetive slam poet. High school: The Gow School, South Wales, N.Y. What makes him impressive: Martinez is a competitive slam poet—despite being dyslexic. Hoping to improve his writing and ability to put his thoughts on paper, Martinez learned to perform on stage, earning multiple awards for his poetry in school and at various open mic nights. Since then, he won first place in the Slam Competition against the BAM Youth Slam Team and performed at the Canadian National Youth Poetry Slam Competition— the first American to do so. Martinez hopes to help other dyslexic students by studying the cognitive science of dyslexia. For his senior thesis he researched the correlation between dyslexia and selfesteem to try to understand why dyslexics often feel less motivated than other students. He'll present his thesis on a panel at the Multicultural Dyslexic Awareness Initiative Conference, a new two-day symposium on dyslexia, at Yale University in August. On top of his poetry and interest in research on dyslexia, Martinez was the president of the student council and captain of his school's varsity lacrosse, basketball, and soccer teams. Plans for next year: Martinez will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall on the Gates Millennium Scholarship, and plans to study cognitive science. The Gow Life Magazine

COMMENCEMENT WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS Math Teacher John Lindahl Receives Lundell Award
Originally from Jamestown, New York, John holds a Bachelors degree in Mathematics Education from Buffalo State College and a Masters degree in Economics from The University of Maine. Prior to beginning his tenure at Gow, he taught in the Fredonia School System. He has been teaching math at Gow since 2005. In addition to teaching, John also coaches modified soccer and supervises the Gow ski club program. Previously he served as the assistant coach of Gow’s crew team and was a dorm supervisor. He currently lives on campus with his wife, Melissa, a science teacher at Christain Central Academy, and their two daughters. The Lowell L. Lundell Award is presented annually to recognize teaching excellence. This honor is bestowed on that faculty member who through his/her dedication, concern and skill has demonstrated the highest qualities of a professional teacher. The recipient is chosen by a vote of his/her fellow faculty members.

Larry Acheson, ’83, Nautical Entrepreneur Joins Gow’s Board of Trustees

Larry Acheson, ’83, is the kind of alumnus you hope will someday join your Board of Trustees. Infectiously enthusiastic, affable and successful, he brings not only a wealth of experience, but a measure of gratitude as well, to the task of helping his alma mater navigate the challenges of the 21st century. And, he’s a fascinating guy to boot, having managed to turn his boyhood love of boating and his independent spirit into a unique career. A few years after graduating from Gow, Larry founded Offshore Marine Towing, now TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale, a marine towing and salvage company that plies the waters off the eastern coast of Florida, the Bahamas and beyond, giving aid to boaters in distress and providing all kinds of support for the commercial and private shipping community. But what most inspires Larry Acheson’s service to Gow as a new trustee is his experience as a young man here thirty years ago. Larry arrived in South Wales in the fall of 1980, not, however, by choice. “My parents pretty much brought me here in a straitjacket,” he says only half jokingly. “And they pretty much took me out the same way. I wasn’t what you would call a model student.” As more than one veteran faculty member recalled, Larry was a fighter. He concurs. “My response to everything—frustration, boredom, rules, conflict—was physical.” He came very close to not making it through Gow. “In the summer between my junior and senior years at Gow, I ran away from my home in Port Huron, Michigan. I was living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with no intention of returning to Gow. Things were going great. I had a job, a car, an apartment, but I promised my dad I’d return to Gow to finish my high school education and I’m glad I did.” As much as Larry wasn’t always the happiest (or the most cooperative) student during his days at Gow, he knew that something positive was happening to him. “When I’d go home on breaks and I’d be in a social situation with other kids, and they’d ask me about school, something came over me. All of the sudden, I’d straighten up, stand a little taller, and tell them about Gow and the small classes and wearing a coat and tie and going to evening study hall. I expressed a kind of pride that surprised me. I obviously knew, even if subconsciously, that I was getting the education I needed.” It wasn’t long after he graduated that he began to understand the value of his time at Gow. “I realized pretty quickly that the staff here had gotten it; they had understood me. As committed as they were to the kids with learning disabilities, they were also just as committed to kids like me who needed discipline more than remediation. And what I needed more than anything was discipline and boundaries.” He is profusive in his appreciation for the teachers who influenced him when he was such an angry young man: then Headmaster David Gow (who, he says, “taught me how the world works”); Dan Kelley; Rob Garcia; his dorm parents, Paul and Kathy Rose.

From Gow, Larry didn’t follow the traditional path to a college degree. “It took me years not to get through college,” he said. But the skills and attitude that he had developed at Gow gave him the confidence to embark on the adventure that became TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale. One day he was cruising off Fort Lauderdale and he came upon a fellow in a broken down boat. He rigged a tow rope from his boat and pulled him safely ashore. He had done this as an act of kindness, but the stranded boater gave him fifty dollars. “Hmm,” Larry thought. “I wonder . . .” And the entrepreneurial wheels began to turn in his head. For a young man who always knew that he was destined to be his own boss, this was all the encouragement he needed. Larry began to spend his weekends looking for boaters in distress who needed a tow. He had a crude sign made for his twenty-four-foot Privateer that said “Offshore Marine Towing,” although, as he recalls, the sign maker didn’t plan carefully and for years the sign actually said, “Offshore Marine Towin.” Gradually word of Larry’s penchant for nautical rescue began to spread. In 1989, Offshore Marine Towing joined the BoatU.S. (Boat Owners Association of The United States) towing program and became one of the first TowBoatU.S. companies in South Florida. And the rest, as they say, is history. Today Larry’s TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale maintains a fleet of over a dozen boats ranging in size from twenty-four-foot rigid-hulled inflatables to thirty-one foot JC custom hulls, to a ninety-six-foot steel-hulled salvage vessel. They allow him to provide a wide range of services to a customer base that spans South Florida from Delray Beach south to Miami and east into the Bahamas, as well as other long distance ventures. His staff numbers over fifty and includes divers, mechanics, riggers and nautical engineers who are on call twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week. One of his newest hires is Govian Jordan Walker ’08, who is now a patrol captain, further proof of the efficiency and value of the Gow network. With Larry at the helm, TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale has successfully helped with hurricane evacuations, on-board fires, recoveries of stolen craft, re-floatation of sunken boats. The next time you watch “Pirates of the Caribbean,” (the part where the pirate ship rises from the bottom), you’ll be seeing TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale’s handy work. With a dedicated and professional command structure operating at TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale, Larry has found that he can take time to cruise the waters of the East Coast and the Caribbean. And, recently, he has discovered that he wants to spend time back in South Wales, too. “I wasn’t too involved with the school for a long time. I’d send some money now and again, and if there was a Gow alumni dinner nearby, I’d try to go. But then my son enrolled in the Summer Program. And Gayle Hutton, the Director of Development, reached out to me.” Before he knew it, he was on the board. Headmaster Brad Rogers says, “Larry brings so many skills to the board. He has a clear passion for what Gow did for him and we are fortunate that he wants to share some of his talent and time with Gow. Larry is diplomatic and has a sense of humor that adds much to the board. He understands the big picture. As a member of the Development Committee, as well as a generous donor, he is a terrific asset to the school.” Although much of his time at Gow these days is spent in meetings with fellow trustees and Gow staff, Larry is drawn to the students whenever he’s on campus. As a former student himself, and as a student who struggled and resisted but ultimately prevailed, he has earned a credibility that present day Govians, as well as his peers on the board, recognize and respect. 1960s
George Reid ‘43 is writing a paper about two sets of 15th century tapestries. One set hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the second set at the Cloisters Museum (a branch of the Metropolitan Museum) in New York City. One of George’s first jobs was as Director of Education at The Cleveland Museum and he has long appreciated the history of these intricate and fascinating tapestries. George lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

They raised $100,000 for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. They are now both ski instructors at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming where Sarah also sells real estate. They recently attended a Gow dinner in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Jim Grenauer ‘55 owns the Glen Park Tavern, a historic restaurant in Williamsville, New York. Several years ago, Jim’s daughter Ellie and several friends created a scholarship in honor of Jim for students to attend Gow. The scholarship is presented each year at Commencement. Roger Adams ‘71 & Jon Holt ‘58 returned to Gow to spend the day with this year’s undefeated Varsity Soccer Team. The last time Gow’s varsity team was undefeated was the 1970 season when Jon Holt was the coach and Roger Adams, the captain. Today’s students and coaches enjoyed the chance to have lunch with Coach Holt and Mr. Adams. Roger is President of Gow’s Alumni Association. Class Notes Jim Dwight ‘72 went to Windham College in Putney, Vermont after graduating from Gow. He then moved to Alaska where he was a marine operations supervisor and vessel equipment operator for ten years. He responded to oil spills all over the state. Jim moved to Seattle in 1987 to direct Crowley Maritime’s petroleum sales on the West Coast and Alaska. He now manages Bowhead Transport, a marine freight company owned by an Alaska native corporation. Jim and his wife, Carol, live in West Seattle. Rick Thompson ‘72 and his wife, Ellee, recently attended a Gow dinner in Baltimore. Rick is still enjoying his job as Science Department Chairman and Women’s Golf Coach at the McDonough School in Baltimore. Ellie just retired from teaching at McDonough. Their son, Cam, lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two children. Their daughter, Lee, was married this summer. Bruce Byers ‘73 is a photographer and has lived in New York City since 1975. Clauson ‘73 is Senior Vice President and Excess Casualty Division Manager at Liberty International Underwriters and lives in Greenwich, Connecticut. Jim Harper ‘76 writes that after 18 months of work, his solo film project 2012 Race Across America Team 411 premiered on May 4. He filmed four women as they competed in the world’s toughest transcontinental bicycling race. The film shows how a crew of twelve battle fatigue to keep their racers safe and on course. Jim’s wife, Kei, and son, Eric, are great. Eric loves riding his bicycle and attended summer camp. Remick French ‘78 and his wife, Marianne, have two children: John, a sophomore at Tulane and Marianne, a junior in high school. He recently went to dinner with Kevin Shoemacher ‘78 and his wife, Karen. He writes that “We both have successful business careers, balanced family lives, and have focused on raising our kids. We have great memories of Gow and credit our experiences as a turning point in our lives.” Steve Paisley ‘78 works in the motion picture and television industries as an onset painter in Toronto. He is currently working on season two of the BBC America’s show Copper which takes place in 1865 in Five Points, New York. In the past few years, he has worked on the following productions: The Mortal Instruments – City of Bones, Carrie, Copper, King and Maxwell (CBS pilot), Suits, Covert Affairs, and others. Adam Oberkircher ‘83 recently completed the Ironman Syracuse. He did a 1.2 mile swim in 36.33 minutes, biked 56 miles in 3:04 hours, and ran 13.1 miles in 2:48 hours. Claude Stuart ‘90, a comedian, recently co-founded a sketch comedy group and production company called Recycled Babies in which he is a writer, performer and producer. George Whitehouse ‘88 lives in Greeley, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Liz, have twins, Orson and Theodora. George rehabilitates traditional timber frame barns for conversion to residences in northeast Pennsylvania and the Catskill region of New York State. His company, American Joinery, specializes in applying mortise and tenon joinery for exposed structural timber work. With his family, he hopes to conserve an exceptional rural farmstead by purchasing and then applying perm a-culture principles to protect the property.

John Leary ‘03 is Director of Security and Surveillance at Dell Computers Research Labs in Austin, Texas. Gordon Naumberg ‘03 writes that “This year I continued working towards my Masters in American Fine & Decorative Art. As I pursue my aspirations, I am so grateful to The Gow School faculty and the fine foundation they afforded to me.” Patrick Dunnigan ‘04 has been coping with chronic kidney disease since the fall of 2010 and received a new kidney from his sister in May. Adam Kendrick ‘04 is a Point Planner for two divisions of The Kroger Company, Food for Less and Food Co. which are located in Chicago and California. He does the 3D design modeling for all divisions of Kroger. Brian Lee ‘04 moved from New York City to Hong Kong in April. He had been living and working in New York as a furniture maker since graduating from The Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Barclay Nickels ‘04 recently performed with his band “Barclay Nickel and Rocky Shoals” in Missoula, Montana . Tom Price ‘04 is graduating with an AA degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling with a 3.83 GPA with honors. He plans on earning a degree in Psychiatry from the University of Maryland Baltimore. Marc Schwach ‘04 is Front Office Manager at the Hotel Boulderado. He races road bikes in the summer and volunteers for the National Ski Patrol (Rocky Mountain Division) in the winter. He recently attended a Gow dinner in Denver. Heath Badders ‘05 has been accepted to South Texas School of Law where he will be a full time student in fall of 2013. Chaitu Cotha ‘05 graduated from Regis University. He majored in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing and International Business. He then got a master’s in Gemmology, which is the study of diamonds and gemstones. This prepared him to work in his family’s 140-year-old business, C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons. When Chaitu returned to India, he started a new business called The 1869 Guild. It was the first jewelry business in the country to be run by a 23-year-old. Its products are now sold in 250 stores. He writes that “Today at the age of 26, I am married to the woman of my dreams and on the board of three companies in different fields of business. Jarad Kleinberg ‘05 and Pete Thomas ‘07 have created a company called MadKats Productions that is making films of all types, including action sports. They are sponsoring a mountain biking team that is racing on the East Coast. Pete and Jarad are living in Brooklyn. Andy Sigfussen ‘05 attended Gow for two years and then returned to the Chicago area and graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in 2005. While at Hinsdale, he was an All Conference and All State swimmer. He attended Denver University, majoring in Business and Statistics and was a member of the men’s swim team, earning varsity letters from 2006-09. He was a finalist in the Sunbelt Conference Swimming Championships several times, and his DU team was three time conference champions.

Matt DeGeer ‘07 and his girlfriend, Hannah, (pictured) were recently in New York and attended a Gow dinner. They live in Kamloops, British Columbia where they are avid mountain bikers and Matt races competitively. Paul Kohan ‘07 is currently entering his third and final year of law school, and is working on a law journal article titled “Football and Homosexuality: The Legal Implications of NFL Teams Inquiring Into Potential Player’s Sexuality” that he will be submitting to journals. This summer he is studying international business in Krakow, Poland. In the fall, he will be a teaching assistant for appellate advocacy and hopes to intern with Gow alumnus, the Honorable Clinton Peterson ‘88. Dan Lieberman ‘07 is a petty officer second class assigned to the aircraft squadron aboard the USS George Washington in Atsugi, Japan.
Drew Donaldson ‘06 is currently acting as Creative Director at Outlier Media (http://outliermedia. tv), a company he started in 2008. As Creative Director, he has produced video, audio, photo, and design projects for clientele in the entertainment and advertising industries. Last fall, Drew won Best Sound Design for his work on the short film SEED at the Philadelphia First Glance Film Festival. He lives in Bayonne, New Jersey. Steven Greve ‘08 completed his co-op requirement for RIT this past summer, and was hired as a project engineer in the construction department of Edgewood Properties in Piscataway, New Jersey. Phillip Pisters ‘08 graduated magna cum laude from Marshall University with a BS in biology and minor in both history and chemistry. small Forward Operations Base, but it’s not bad. We live in tents but it’s better than sleeping in the trucks. We even get two hot meals a day. The fewer MREs the better! Michael Mitche ’09 graduated with honors from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a double degree in Economics and Math. In the fall, he will be attending the University of Iowa Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (one of the top 25 programs in country) to pursue a PhD. Michael received a full tuition scholarship and teaching assistantship. He recently ran his second marathon in Iowa. Michael spoke to Gow students about his college experience in May.

For the past five years, they have been living in Chattanooga, Tennessee where Drew got his MBA and was working. Ashley has a job teaching at a Waldorf School in Buffalo. Doug Ismail (Director of Development 1989-92) has been the Executive Vice President of the California Masonic Foundation and Chief Philanthropy Officer for the past eleven years. He lives and works in San Francisco.
William “Bill” Van Wie ‘57 of Clayton, North Carolina passed away January 1, 2013 at the age of 74. A native of Rochester, New York, he attended Gow before graduating from The Carson Long Military Academy. He served in the Coast Guard from 1961-66 where he was a Hospital Corpsman First Class. After serving in the military, he owned home remodeling businesses and lived in Washington, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
New Faces Join Gow’s Admissions Team Doug Cotter ‘87 promoted to Director Two new associates join Gow Doug Cotter ‘87, Director has been a part of Gow for more than 20 years. A graduate of The University at Buffalo, Doug taught history and RL for ten years. Doug was the coach of Gow’s crew program, as well as the advisor to the Key Club and Headwaiter programs. For the past ten years, he has served as Associate Director of Admissions. Doug, his wife, Kelly, and their two sons live in Clarence. Matt Fisher, Associate Director comes to Gow from the Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, Massachusetts where, over the past seven years, he has held numerous positions in Admissions and Student Life. He enjoys running and has completed one full marathon and several half marathons. He and his wife, Kelli, have three boys and will be residing in Ellis House on campus. Jenn Bamann, Associate Director of Marketing Communications and Brand Management comes to Gow from the Bridgton Academy and Elmira College where she served on their Admissions teams. She and her husband, Garrett, have a son and will be living off campus.

Bill is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 46 years, two daughters and three grandchildren. Michael N. Tate ‘85 died January 15, 2013 from injuries sustained in a firearms accident. He was 47. He resided in Norton, Virginia. Michael was a graduate of J.I. Burton High School, attended The Gow School for a post graduate year, and West Virginia Wesleyan College. From 1998 until 2005, he was president and co-owner of Norton Press Inc. and its three newspapers. He left the newspaper business, but continued to write a weekly football prognostication column that was founded by his father. Preceded in death by his father, Carroll N. Tate. Surviving are his wife, Paula Lea Tate; a daughter, three sons, two step-children, his mother, and two sisters. Dear Gow friends,
What a pleasure to be able to thank so many of you for supporting The Gow School. Whether it be giving of your time, money or ideas, it all helps to make Gow a special place. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a student who has struggled suddenly “get it”; to hear an alumnus tell of the journey that brought him to Gow and how that choice changed his future; or to bring so many of you together in meetings around the country. This year, we had Gow events in 35 cities. It’s always a pleasure to gather to talk about Gow. The school is doing well. We have no debt, healthy enrollment and a vision for the future that includes educating young ladies, renovating and updating living and teaching spaces on campus, and raising endowment funds to secure Gow for generations to come. We can only do these things because of your financial and emotional support, and for these, I thank you. We are here for you. Noted Chef Chad Sarno Visits Campus
Jean Basse (mom of Adam ‘15) is passionate about good, healthy food. To help students and faculty better understand the eating choices we make, she invited noted chef Chad Sarno, Director of Education for Whole Foods Markets Healthy Eating Program, to visit Gow for a weekend in May. While here, he prepared several delicious items for the audience to sample and demonstrated his cooking techniques. Whether a “chocolate” smoothie which actually contained spinach, or garbanzo beans disguised as chicken salad, the students and faculty alike enjoyed the chance to try some new foods. After morning assembly, Chad and Jean worked with a team of a dozen students in the kitchen to prepare and serve a gourmet meal for about 30 guests in the evening. Each of those students volunteered because of his interest in culinary arts, and the evening was a great (and delicious!) success. Chad has been a contributing chef to several recipe books and has been featured in many national publications. He has been a guest on dozens of morning shows and food focused programs on television and radio. Through the intersection of clean food and culinary education, Chad continues to share his passion for helping others achieve their health goals, starting in the kitchen. In his most recent project, Chad has teamed up with New York Times best selling author Kris Carr of Crazy Sexy Diet to write Crazy Sexy Kitchen: 150 Plant-Empowered Recipes to Ignite a Mouthwatering Revolution.
