MATT HILL Matt Hill joined the University of South Florida as head men’s tennis coach in June of 2012. Hill came to USF after an extremely successful five-year run as assistant coach with the nationallyranked Mississippi State Bulldogs. Hill has taken the team to two straight NCAA tournaments, including the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Hill also led the team to a second straight American Athletic Conference title in 2015. In his first two years at USF, Hill compiled a 31-17 record at the helm of the program. Hill’s second year proved to be a huge success as he coached Roberto Cid to be the first men’s tennis All-American in program history. The Bulls won the inaugural American Athletic Conference tournament and made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. Hill was also named the AAC Coach of the Year. During Hill’s five years at Mississippi State, he helped the Bulldogs improve from a No. 58 ranking in 2008 and a No. 72 ranking in ‘09 to top 20 finishes the last two seasons, including a No. 11 final ranking in 2012. Hill landed and mentored some of the top young talent in the collegiate ranks, helping Mississippi State finish the 2011 season as one of only six schools nationally with four players ranked in the top 100. The Bulldogs bettered that mark in 2012, finishing as one of only five

schools nationally with five singles players ranked in the top 100. Mississippi State’s No. 11 final ranking in 2012 was the program’s best finish since 1998. The Bulldogs posted the program’s best record (20-7) since that same 1998 squad went 21-5. State went 9-2 in the powerful Southeastern Conference, finishing third in the league, and successfully defending the SEC Western Division title. The Bulldogs defeated 14 teams ranked in the top 50 and seven in the top 25 en route to earning an NCAA bid. In addition, two of Hill’s top pupils earned Capital One Academic All-America honors with a third being tabbed Academic AllDistrict, while the men’s tennis team led all Bulldog men’s teams in GPA last spring. Prior to joining the Bulldogs’ staff, Hill served as a volunteer assistant coach at Alabama for two seasons. He helped the Crimson Tide improve from a No. 56 final ranking the season before he arrived to a No. 14 ranking in 2007, his second year with the program. Hill helped Alabama reach two NCAA Tournaments during his stint, including a trip to the round of 16 in ‘07. A native of Holt, Mich., Hill earned a degree in business marketing with a specialization in professional tennis management from Ferris State University in 2005 and a master’s degree in human performance from Alabama in ‘07. Also a member of the tennis team while at Ferris State, Hill helped lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals for the first time in school history. However, Hill was thankful just to have had the opportunity to play collegiate tennis. Prior to entering college, he was diagnosed with cancer that eventually led to him having to have a full knee replacement. But, Hill fought back from the surgery to follow his dreams of competing collegiately. Adding to his credentials, Hill is a member of the USTA High Performance Coaching Program, and has coached the Zonals National Team for the Southern Section during the summer. Hill is a Level I USPTA Professional with a Specialization in Competitive Player Development. He currently serves on the board for the USTA Collegiate Team Committee to help increase tennis across all college campuses in the South.

ASHLEY FISHER USF men’s tennis coach Matt Hill has added world-class experience to his staff with the addition of assistant Ashley Fisher. Fisher, a two-time All-American at TCU, heads back to the college game after coaching at the professional level since 2013. Prior to coaching, Fisher won 26 doubles titles and had success on the biggest stages of pro tennis before retiring in 2011. Fisher reached the 2006 U.S. Open men’s doubles semifinals and was a doubles quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in 2006 and Wimbledon in 2004. Fisher was ranked as highly as No. 19 in the world in doubles with a victory over the famous Bryan brothers. Before becoming a pro, the Australia native played four seasons at TCU, where he was ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles and became an NCAA finalist as a junior in 1996. Fisher graduated from TCU with degrees in finance and history in 1998. Fisher is excited about working with a USF team that made program history last season by reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time after capturing its second consecutive American Athletic Conference title. “Every tennis program that Matt has touched has done well,” Fisher said. “He’s changed the culture here and I see it already after just two weeks.” USF recently earned its highest-ever ranking at No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis poll and Fisher is looking forward to helping the Bulls make more strides on the national stage. “Their goal this year is to win a national championship and I see no reason why it can’t happen,” Fisher said. “They have the tools to make it happen. Now it’s just working hard for five months, ticking all the boxes and giving themselves the best chance to do that. As coaches, we can give them the maximum chance at success.” Fisher resides in St. Petersburg with his wife, Kiersten, and their two children, Holden, 2, and Declan, 4.

GARY NEEDELMAN Gary Needelman has joined the Bulls’ staff as Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2014-15 season. In addition to his coaching duties, Needelman will coordinate periodic USF Tennis Camps, lead community initiatives and assist in player recruiting. “Gary brings a wealth of experience in virtually every facet that touches our program,” head coach Matt Hill said. “we are incredibly excited about him being a part of our coaching staff.” Aside from head professional roles for the highly-regarded Tennissmith School and Saddlebrook Tennis Academies, Needelman served for 13 years as Director of Tennis and Head Teaching Professional at Carrollwood Country Club. From 2003-2010 Needelman trained Chamberlain High School’s tennis teams, leading to six individual state champions and two team Class 3A state runner-up finishes. Past students of his have gone on to win state and national junior titles, collegiate championships and competed on the ATP, WTA and ITF circuits. Many of his students earned collegiate scholarship offers as well. For his work, Needelman and his programs have been featured in various publications, including Florida Tennis Magazine, Village Views and the Tampa Tribune. Needelman was trained as a player and instructor by renowned coach Steve Smith and is certified both by Tennissmith and the Professional Tennis Registry. He competed throughout Florida in USTA Open Circuit tournaments and won numerous local and regional events before devoting full-time to teaching. Needelman stays active in the community by regularly hosting free tennis clinics at elementary schools and speaking to students about careers in sports. Prior to his tennis career, Needelman spent 10 years as a sportswriter and also served as communications director for a Major League Soccer franchise. He is a native of Miami Beach and 1994 graduate of Florida State University. “I’m thrilled to become part of what Coach Hill and Coach (Brandon) Wagner are building here at USF,” Needelman said. “USF Men’s Tennis is already a top national program that is rising fast and we all share a determination to see that growth continue.”
