Salem

is a quiet, rural community of more than 4,000 residents. Nestled among hills, wetlands and open fields astride the historic route between Hartford and the sea, the town has a heritage of agriculture. Incorporated in 1819, its residents are a friendly, caring, diverse and talented group who contribute to the manufacturing, arts, education and technology centers of central and southeastern Connecticut. Salem is centrally located on the Historic Governor’s highway with commercial connections to Hartford, Norwich, New London, Willimantic, and other metropolitan areas in the eastern region of the state. Businesses enjoy easy access to major interstate highways and state roads. The business climate is ripe for development, with available land, existing commercial infrastructure, and industrial and commercial business zones. The town welcomes new businesses who are good neighbors and who fit into the distinctly rural atmosphere.

Salem features a beautiful countryside with farms and recreational facilities. Opportunities for outdoor recreation include hiking, boating, fishing, and camping. Gardner Lake offers recreational boaters and fishermen a renovated boat launch with plenty of vehicle and trailer parking. The beach and fields provide picnic areas overlooking one of the largest lakes in southeastern Connecticut. Preserve and the Zemko Wildlife Management Area feature miles of trails.
