othing says “Nashville” quite like a night at the Grand Ole Opry – the show that made country music famous. All the Opry fun dates back to 1925, when Nashville radio station WSM announcer George D. Hay introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer on a new show called the “WSM Barn Dance” and unwittingly paved the way for the world’s longest-running live radio show. Now in its 86th year, the show Hay started has launched countless country music careers and led the way for Nashville to become known as Music City around the globe. Early Opry performers such as Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, and Bill Monroe became musical foundations for the Opry during its early years. Later, other Opry stars would become entertainment icons in their own right, including Patsy Cline, George Jones, and Bill Anderson. Today, the Opry makes its home at the Grand Ole Opry House, offering performances every Friday and
Saturday night as well as Tuesdays March – December. Each Opry show highlights a mix of new stars, superstars, and legends of country music performing a wide range of styles under the country umbrella. Dierks Bentley, Jimmy Dickens, Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Josh Turner, and Carrie Underwood are among the Opry’s 60+ members today. othing says “Nashville” quite like a night at the Grand Ole Opry – the show that made country music famous—, and there’s no better season than autumn to visit the Opry Complex. After all, October is both the Opry’s birthday month and heralded as “country music month” from coast to coast. The Opry is set to celebrate its birthday this year with weeks of special shows and superstar appearances. Among those confirmed to visit the Opry stage this fall are the likes of Dierks Bentley, Sara Evans, Lee Ann Womack, Trace Adkins, Crystal Gayle, and Ray Stevens. Meanwhile, CMA award-winner Blake Shelton is set to welcome fans to the Opry House daily as the video host of Opry House Backstage Pass Tours, a one-of-a-kind experience that gives guests a look behind the scenes of country’s most famous show. Fans can get a taste of the Opry—literally—at the Opry Backstage Grill across the street from Gaylord Opryland Resort inside the Radisson Hotel at Opryland. The restaurant combines the entertainment of the Opry with traditional Southern favorites including fried chicken, barbecue, and even dumplins made from Loretta Lynn’s personal recipe. The Opry’s birthday isn’t the only milestone being celebrated this fall. October 25th marks the 100th birthday of one of the Opry’s most iconic members ever, country comedienne Minnie Pearl. Ryman Auditorium
T
he Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church of Country Music and the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1973 to 1974, is sacred to the history of country music. Built in 1892, the Ryman Auditorium is a National Historic Landmark and a must see for anyone visiting Nashville. Most famous as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974, the Ryman is the very epicenter of Music City. There are currently three exhibits on display: Grand Ole Opry 1940s & 1950s, Grand Old Opry 1960s & 1970s, and Johnny & June at the Ryman. See genuine artifacts from those early Opry years like the dress Dolly Parton wore the night she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. See rare photos from The Johnny Cash Show of Cash with Bob Dylan and Louis Armstrong. And, have your picture taken on the stage graced by legends from Houdini and Hank Williams to Bob Hope and Bruce Springsteen. Take a guided tour through the dressing rooms dedicated to the stars of the Ryman’s rich musical past, including Minnie Pearl and Hank Williams. Stand in the wings where performers as varied as Katharine Hepburn, Elvis Presley and James Brown stood awaiting their time in the spotlights. A

There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

he town I lived in was a garrison town,” Peter Nesbitt of Matchless Transportation recalls with a thick Cockney accent. “I lived next to the biggest armory factory in the world at the time. They made all sorts of things: tanks, guns, shells. So the Germans would come over every night and try to bomb it. They must have gotten the geography wrong, because they kept missing it. There was a butcher shop across the street from where I lived. One night it got hit and the two houses behind it.” Peter’s family survived World War II, and like their working-class neighbors, they wasted no time rebuilding their lives. They settled back in Plumstead next to a motorcycle factory that had been fenced off to house top-secret, khaki-green WD (war department) motorcycles. Inside that factory, people were building the infamous Matchless Motorcycle. Matchless is one of the oldest brands, or marques, of British motorcycles, which were manufactured in Plumstead en masse starting in 1901. Peter began his career working on automobiles at the age of 17. “Eventually I worked my way up to doing engines and transmissions,” Peter said. “I built my way up. I learned the hard way. After working as a mechanic apprentice for a used car dealer for two years, I got into my own car business.” He travelled to America in 1971 to join his brother on Long Island at his foreign car shop where he became the head mechanic and supervisor, working on Rolls Royce, Bentley and older British cars. “It wasn’t really what I wanted to do so I broke away and opened my own store about four miles down the road doing foreign-auto repair,” Peter said. Peter named his business “Matchless Auto Engines” after his admiration for Matchless Motorcycles. He was an artist when it came to restoring and maintaining foreign classic cars. The name “Matchless” and Peter’s reputation as a high-end mechanic got around in the vintage car world, and his high-profile clientele increased. He began servicing cars for Geraldo Rivera, actor Peter Boyle and Jeff Scott from CBS. Peter also purchased Lamborghinis and Jensens for Foghat drummer Roger Earl and other rock stars. He married his neighbor’s daughter Diane Croteau in 1993. She was an art major, whom he had employed. The couple’s love of great art – moving and non-moving – made

them the perfect creative pair. “Peter is the epitome of the word “Matchless,” Diane said. “He is the substance upon which a great reputation is built. He’s like a crazy, mad scientist – a back-to-the-future dude – but always in a classy Englishman’s ride.” In 1994, Peter and Diane made a visit to Tennessee to visit family members and fell in love with the state. In 1999, they moved Matchless Machinery to Tennessee. After the events of 9-11 brought the business of plastic molding to a crawl, Peter and Diane decided to re-establish Peter’s mechanical skills with Matchless Limousine. They began building a fleet of restored cars, and traditional limousines, running the business out of Cheatham County. In 2005, they moved the business to Nashville proper. “Diane runs the whole show – the marketing, the booking, the daily running of the business – and she does a fantastic job,” Peter said. “I’m just in the background, restoring cars and keeping the cars running. I have a vision when I first think about restoring a car. If I think it will have the appeal to the clientele that we’re aiming for, then I’ll buy it and restore it. My cars are classic cars.” Matchless has 22 cars in the fleet, including the classics: three MkIX Jaguars (1958, 1960 and 1961); four Rolls Royces, including a black stretch; and a 1962 Bentley. Peter also considers his London Taxi a classic, because it is so different from American cars and people look twice when they see it on the road. “The oldest car we have in the fleet now is a 1958 Jaguar MkIV,” Peter said. “I grew up with that car. There aren’t a lot of people here who can work on them. They’re all original, that’s the thing; they’re all running on their original engines and transmissions. As Peter Nesbitt slides into the driver’s seat of his 1988, cream-colored Rolls, passers-by stop to gawk. You can see a child’s twinkle in his eye – the fondness he holds for a well-built machine. “My wife is an artist, a fantastic artist,” he said. “She’s into the art that hangs on the wall. That’s great, but it doesn’t move. You can’t drive it and take it to your friend’s house and show it off. You’d look a bit stupid carrying a piece of artwork around with you,” Peter laughed. “Whereas we’ve got these cars, we both have admiration for our old cars, the mainstay of our business, really – the classics. DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.
DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open by day as a museum and at night plays hosts to artists of all genres.
DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee.
