Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater “A Must See in Nashville”

A

re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

I would highly recommend that visitors to Nashville experience Nashville Nightlife

The “Best of Country” Dinner and Show, throughout their season, includes guest stars such as “Opry Star” Jeannie Seely, “The Fiddle Man” Tim Watson, Tommy Cash, Diana Murrell, Paula Poe (from the Tammy Wynette Show) and many others. This is a fantastic show you won’t want to miss! The standing ovation at the end of the show is an indication of the great time the audience had. Following the show there is a meet and greet with the performers. I would highly recommend that visitors to Nashville experience Nashville Nightlife where you will see the best of country from old to new. Come see why the Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater presents a Dinner and Country Music Show voted the best combination in Nashville. D on’t miss this Nashville tradition. his isn’t just a museum; it’s an experience, an exciting and entertaining destination in Nashville with something for everyone. Rhinestone costumes, seasoned instruments, and tear-stained lyric sheets are only the beginning. Add incredible architecture along with our famous hospitality, and a day at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum turns into the memories of a lifetime. During your visit, you will experience the story of country music from its beginning with the exhibit, Sing Me Back Home: The Journey Begins, Folk Roots to the 1960s, and tracks its evolution in the exhibit, Dreaming My Dreams: The Journey Continues, 1960s to the Present. Through hundreds of artifacts, photographs, original recordings, and archival films, the ever-changing core exhibitions immerse the visitor in the history and sounds of country music’s early years. Artists represented include Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Ray Prince, Roy Rogers, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and many others. While experiencing your favorite artists, be sure not to miss the limited engagement exhibits the Museum has to offer. You will be sure to enjoy Patsy Cline: Crazy for Loving You, a biographical exhibit open in the museum’s East Gallery through June 10, 2013. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a powerful and moving film, created by museum staff, that includes new interviews with four Country Music Hall of Fame members-Harold Bradley, Brenda Lee, Willie Nelson and the Jordanaires’ Ray Walker-each of whom knew and worked with Cline; archival performance footage; and audio clips from Owen Bradley’s original three-track recordings of some of Patsy’s greatest performances. For the first time, the public will be able to hear Cline’s spine-tingling vocals, isolated without instrumental accompaniment, on “Crazy,” “Sweet Dreams” and other classics.

On the Museum’s second floor, don’t miss our popular exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country. This exhibit explores the roots of West coast country and examines two of country music’s most respected, influential, and successful artists, Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Emerging in the 1960s from the thriving Bakersfield, California music scene, Haggard and Owens became the best-known exponents of the distinctive “Bakersfield Sound,” the name given to their sharp-edged, commercially-viable alternative to the smooth Nashville Sound. This exhibit will draw on the Museum’s rich collection of artifacts, vintage film footage, photos, costumes, and more to tell the story. In addition to your Museum tour, you can also experience Nashville’s only studio tour at Historic RCA Studio B. The studio provides a glimpse into the heart of Nashville music making during one of its most exciting and classic periods. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” by Elvis Presley, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” by Charlie Pride, “Only the Lonely” by Roy Orbison, and “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton are just a few of the milestone recordings that got their start at Studio B. (Historic RCA Studio B seats are limited, so book your tour today. Tours depart daily from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and are available only in conjunction with Museum admission. Roundtrip transportation to and from the studio on Music Row is included in your admission price.) Finish off the day shopping the extensive collection of hard to find country music CDs, DVDs, books, souvenirs, apparel, gifts, and more at the Museum Store. Also make plans to have lunch at the Museum’s full service restaurant, Two Twenty • Two Grill & Catering, featuring regional favorites with a contemporary spin. Don’t miss a chance to experience Nashville’s crown jewel, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

here is only one Music City, and today Nashville continues its emergence as a cultural, artistic and entertainment-rich destination, filled with unique music, a myriad of art galleries, botanical gardens and greenways, historic homes, honkytonks and culinary delights. There’s a whole host of attractions that have made Music City famous. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which includes over a million artifacts exploring country’s connections to blues, R&B and pop, will also feature the temporary exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country opening in March 2012. Across the street stands the home of the Grammy-award winning Nashville Symphony, the dazzling $123 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Inspired by the greatest concert halls in the world, the 197,000-square-foot classically-

Music City Walk of Fame 30 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

columned venue offers an unparalleled acoustical experience. Nashville has a pristine collection of antebellum estate mansions: Belle Meade, where a string of winning thoroughbreds was raised; The Hermitage, presidential home of Andrew Jackson; and Belmont Mansion, drenched in Victorian grandeur. Tour the beautifully-restored hilltop State Capitol building, then walk down to the Tennessee State Museum for an educational tour of the state’s history and culture. Dubbed the Athens of the South for its elegance, style and many academic institutions, Nashville claims a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with the 42-ft high statue Athena, the tallest indoor sculpture in the western world. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, an exquisitely converted Art Deco post office, hosts roving exhibitions changing every couple of months. The mansion at Cheekwood houses an extensive art gallery surrounded by 55 acres of divine gardens. What truly sets the city apart is the music. Music is the very heart of Nashville. Long recognized as the world’s capital of country music, Music City also boasts sounds of pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues and soul. Supported by rhythm tracks of culture and history, Nashville is uniquely and authentically “Music City.” In Nashville you can hear great music 24/7, 365 days a year. A great place to begin a tour is on Lower Broadway where honky tonks line the street. Here you’ll find evocative names like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World, and you never know who you might see (or hear), a current star or the next big thing.

Live Music Concert with Keith Urban

You’ll catch star-dusted pickers and songwriters all over town, in places like bluegrass venue Station Inn, the rockin’ Exit/In, the honky tonkin’ bars on Broadway, the song-centered Bluebird Café or the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Of course, the ultimate country venue is the Grand Ole Opry House, where legends and current stars perform on the nation’s longest-running live radio program. Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities. Nashville’s palate offers everything from Southen fare to haute cuisine with quite literally everything in between. Here, a perfect barbecue is as celebrated as the most spectacular creation from any of the city’s award-winning chefs. Whether it’s a family-friendly meal, dinner and a show or a romantic repast, the city’s restaurants serve every dish with a side of Southern hospitality. With its charming mix of musical, historical and cultural flavors, Nashville is truly a city for all seasons and styles. So whether it’s listening to live music, soaking in the art scene, exploring history or simply relaxing, you’ll find many ways to enjoy Music City and discover why music calls us home.

music city trivia & fun facts

DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 32 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open by day as a museum and at night plays hosts to artists of all genres.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. DID YOU KNOW… The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station. march/april 2013
