2015 CMA Music Festival

ne of the best things about music is the act of discovery, and the CMA Music Festival is the perfect place to discover that special artist or band. Most every major Country Music star in the world will be on hand for CMA’s signature event June 11-14 in downtown Nashville. Hundreds of aspiring artists will also be showcasing their talent on the free stages throughout the footprint. More than 400 artists will perform at the event, which has grown as steeply as Country Music itself. Around 5,000 fans attended the first Fan Fair in 1972 at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. This year, more than 80,000 fans a day will descend on Music City to enjoy some of their favorite artists and discover new ones. While tickets to the Nightly Concerts have been sold out since November, there’s still so much more to see, hear and do during the day, even for those who do not have a CMA Music Festival four-day ticket. Fans can enjoy seven FREE music stages including the Chevrolet Riverfront Stage, artist-fan interactions at the AT&T® U-verse Fan Fair X inside the Music City Center, and food, drink, interactive games, prizes, freebies and more in The Buckle located on the honkytonk-lined Lower Broadway. There is no question that the music is great, but the enduring legacy of the Festival is the access fans have to today’s biggest stars. The AT&T U-verse Fan Fair X is where music lovers can interact with major stars like Hunter Hayes, one of four Artists of the Day, and dozens of other acts. The artists sign autographs, shake hands and pose for photos. There also

are three stages of live music inside the convention center including the CMA Close Up Stage. For fans without a CMA Fest four-day ticket, admission to Fan Fair X is just $10 a day or $25 for a four-day pass and can be purchased at CMAfest.com. The Nightly Concerts at LP Field are full of star power this year. LP Field performers include Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Lee Brice, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Randy Houser, Sam Hunt, Alan Jackson, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Maddie & Tae, Neal McCoy, Oak Ridge Boys, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, The Band Perry, Keith Urban, Wynonna & The Big Noise, Chris Young, and Zac Brown Band. All of the artists that perform and fans that attend help support music education with half the net proceeds going to the CMA Foundation’s ongoing music education efforts. Goo Goo Cluster In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented. A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since. Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Last year saw another exciting addition to the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville. The Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store. Visitors have the opportunity to take a walk through history as they peruse a 100+ year timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives. But the sweetest part of the new space (pun intended) may be the glassedencased confectionery kitchen, where Premium Goo Goos are made by hand daily in full view of visitors. George Jones Museum Proudly Opens Its Doors To Downtown Nashville

is music career ran the gamut – from 78 RPM Records all the way to digital downloads. Though George Jones has been gone for a little over two years now, his artistic legacy remains as bright as ever. His name continues to be referenced as an influence of just about every newcomer in the format that comes down the pike today, and his records continue to sell well – both here in the United States and abroad. Jones told his life story in his 1997 autobiography I Lived To Tell It All, but now fans can get up close and personal with “The Possum” with the brand new state-of-the-art George Jones Museum. Located at 128 Second Avenue North in downtown Nashville, the story of George Glenn Jones is told in as much vivid detail as ever before – to his growing up years in Texas going to sleep with the Grand Ole Opry playing on the radio to his 1955 breakthrough hit “Why Baby Why” all the way through his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse in the 1970s and 1980s, ending up with his latter-day triumphs such as “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “Choices” (both Grammy-winning performances) to his 1992 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The George Jones Museum also features many video screens that show Jones doing what he did bestperforming. Many archival interviews featuring the singer are featured as well. Also part of the displays include his numerous Gold and Platinum records – both as a solo artist, and as part of duets with acts such as Tammy Wynette and Merle Haggard. (Including these artists, Jones also recorded with over fifty other acts, including Buck Owens, Mavis Staples, Dolly Parton, Dr. Hook, Keith Richards, and Harry Connick, Jr.) One aspect of the George Jones Museum that will 16

please fans is the interactive recording studio which gives visitors a chance to match vocal wits with Jones on a variety of his classic hit recordings. All told, Jones recorded over 900 songs, and charted on the Billboard Country Singles chart over 150 times between 1955 and 2010. In addition to the Museum, there is also a restaurant and gift shop that will allow fans to take home a George Jones souvenir, as well as a 75-foot rooftop bar overlooking the Cumberland River. On opening weekend (April

2015), the Museum also served as the launch site for White Lightning’ Moonshine. A partnership with Silver Trail Distillery (winners of the 2012 SIP Award for best Whiskey Moonshine – as well as developers of the LBL Moonshine that was just picked up by a national distributor), the brand pays homage to the J.P. Richardsonwritten song of the same title – which became Jones’ first number one record on the Billboard charts in 1959. Jones’ wife / widow, Nancy Jones, says that she feels the Museum will be a place that fans can pay homage to Jones for years to come. “On a daily basis I hear from fans asking me to tell them stories about George. This amazing museum will now be able to help tell those stories as we are going to show so many of his awards, clothes, guitars, and artifacts given to him all around the world from various events. I think fans are going to love it.”

Music City Musings

ur town is usually at the top of every destination wish list, and there are lots of reasons for this. Let us start with the music. The Grand Ole Opry is HERE. The Mother Church of Country Music, the Ryman Auditorium, is HERE! The stunning Country Music Hall of Fame and educational center is HERE. Music Row is HERE! Record labels, recording studios, and the best songwriters in the world are all HERE! Of course, many major country stars of today, along with many of our living legends, reside right here in Middle Tennessee. We also have Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and CMA Fest, one of the largest music festivals in the world. Yes, we call it Music City for a reason. On any given night one can visit a number of music showcase clubs, where you’ll hear up and coming country and rock & roll artists, and songwriting talent galore. Every major music act touring today makes a stop at our Bridgestone Arena. But Nashville is much more than music. Civil war history abounds, as does Presidential history. Historic homes, trails, traces, and battlefields can be found all over Middle Tennessee. Our museums, the zoo, and many huge cultural events, including the Nashville Film Festival, draw thousands to Nashville each year. As do sporting events like NCAA men’s basketball 28 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

tournaments and our own Franklin Mortgage MUSIC CITY BOWL Nashville is the home of the NFL Tennessee Titans and the NHL Nashville Predators, as well as the Triple A Nashville Sounds, whose brand new state-of-the-art stadium is the talk of the town! Local college sports are a huge part of the local fabric, as well. I moved to Middle Tennessee from the Northeast in 1973, when I joined The Oak Ridge Boys. I was 25 years old. CMA Fest was known as Fan Fair. There were just two 5-star restaurants and a handful of hotels in town. I have been singing here now for 42 years, and I am about to turn 67. I have watched the Nashville skyline change and grow for four decades, and it is has all been quite amazing to behold. I used to think I could move back north anytime, but I assure you it would take a burning bush experience and a team of wild horses to drag Joe Bonsall from Middle Tennessee. I LOVE Nashville and all it has to offer. I feel at home here. The Oak Ridge Boys are now inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and we will play the big stage at LP Field during this year’s CMA FEST. There is no town like MY town… NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE… MUSIC CITY, USA! So come on down and see us, ya hear? Joseph S. Nashville’s renowned Johnny Cash Museum has only been opened less than two years but has expanded three times during that period. The latest expansion includes tripling the size of the museum store and adding a Bongo Java Café featuring Nashville’s finest coffee and coffee drinks as well as gourmet café fare. The original Bongo Java has the distinction of being Nashville’s oldest and most honored coffee house, having opened its first location in 1993. Bongo is known for it’s use of local ingredients and coffee beans are organic and fare trade. The café offers a delicious assortment of pastries and baked goods as well as sandwiches, salads and other items made fresh daily in the facility’s new kitchen. Signature items include Johnny Cash’s Iron Pot Chili made from a recipe created by The Man In Black himself. Other favorites include a Fried Bologna and Pimento Cheese sandwich and The Elvis, which features The King’s favorite peanut butter, honey, bananas and bacon served on honey wheat bread. With the current expansion, the museum has expanded its daily operating hours from 8:00AM to 7:00PM, seven days a week. The Bongo Java café opens daily at 8:00AM.

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. From The Man in Black’s earliest childhood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Our newest exhibit, Legends of Sun Records, features artifacts, films and musical recordings from Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. Among the artifacts featured are some of the earliest Presley pieces ever discovered, a pair of Roy Orbison’s signature eyeglasses, handwritten lyrics to the Rock and Roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes and much more. Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers. His concerts tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960. He received two of the Nation’s greatest honors; The National Medal of Arts, presented by President George W. Bush and the Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Bill Clinton.
