M

adame Tussauds, the world-renowned wax attraction, is set to open its newest attraction in Music City this spring. The multi-sensory experience will make guests the star of the show while getting up close and personal with some of the world’s biggest musical talents. Built to honor Nashville and its deep roots in America’s music history, Madame Tussauds will host visitors from around the globe as they enjoy a musical journey through time alongside a colorful cast of figures. The Nashville location will be the first Madame Tussauds worldwide that will center its focus on one theme, music. The beloved brand is excited to be opening an attraction in the U.S. that focuses solely on the lyrical icons that have shaped the musical landscape of America. Kicking off the project with a groundbreaking ceremony in July of 2016, Madame Tussauds Nashville’s construction is making headway with the sounds of hammers steadfastly working toward the Spring 2017 opening. Crews have been working tirelessly to transform the space, creating vivid and authentic scenery that will become the backdrop to the dynamic cast of wax figures. Several music heavy-hitters have already been announced as permanent residents of the brand’s newest locale. Music royalty hitting the stage at Madame Tussauds Nashville will include Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, Minnie Pearl and Little Jimmy Dickens. More artists will continue to be added to the bill as the attraction nears completion. Madame Tussauds has been generating excitement within the Nashville community, hosting several surprise figure reveal events prior to the location’s impending opening. The late Minnie Pearl made her figure debut to Nashville residents and the television viewing audiences around the country, alongside her family members in the city’s annual Christmas parade this December. Adoring fans waved and cheered as she cruised down Broadway atop a Gray Line bus.

Little Jimmy Dickens’ figure also made a splash on the scene as the Grand Ole Opry legend’s close friend and country superstar, Brad Paisley, introduced Dickens’ look alike on the iconic Opry at the Ryman stage. Paisley paid tribute to his late friend with a performance of his favorite Dickens’ song, to the delight of the crowd. Attendees of the attraction will not only be allowed, but encouraged to have fun and interact with the figures. Take a selfie with Queen Bey, rock out next to T-Swift or sing a bar with the Man in Black. Early bird tickets are now available for guests to purchase in order to be among the first to experience the one-of-a-kind attraction. These limited-time-only tickets offer visitors $5 off the regular ticket price. These special Early Bird tickets are redeemable through the end of 2017, after the attraction opens the rate will return to the standard rate of $24 for adults and $19 for children ages 3-12. Ages two and under are always free. Viewing the unrivaled craftsmanship of each figure is truly an experience that cannot be missed, each Madame Tussauds figure is a work of art, involving teams of professional artists and sculptors who spend months of extensive research and take more than 300 measurements to recreate world-famous icons to achieve the kind of astonishing realism that has been at the heart of the 250-year Madame Tussauds’ legacy. In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented. A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since. Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Over the last two years, other exciting additions to the brand’s offerings are the flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, and the Goo Goo Shop Dessert Bar. Located in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville, the retail store and cafe give visitors the opportunity to walk through history as they peruse a 100+ year timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives, feast their eyes upon Premium Goo Goos being made by hand in a glassed-encased confectionery kitchen and satisfy their sweet tooth with delicious baked treats, gourmet confections, and ice cream. The Goo Goo Shop is the exclusive retailer of Premium Goo Goos, 4-ounce candies made with a wide variety of inclusions. The Premium menu rotates periodically and new, unique flavors are introduced on a regular basis, with four to six options available on any given day. NUDIE’S HONKY TONK

T

EMBELLISHES BROADWAY WITH COSTUMES, ARTIFACTS, FOOD & MUSIC

he world-famous Nudie’s Honky Tonk is now open on Broadway in Nashville featuring a three-story entertainment complex housing memorabilia, costumes, multiple bars, stages, and Southern style comfort food for patrons. This must-see attraction celebrates the life of Nudie Cohn and the unforgettable mark he made sewing together Hollywood glamour and country culture. “The rhinestone cowboy couture was founded in the hands of Nudie Cohn,” says owner Bill Miller, who also founded Music City’s award-winning Johnny Cash Museum, and is prepping the opening of the Patsy Cline Museum. “This attraction serves not only as a historical record of the epicenter where fashion perfectly fused country and Hollywood cultures, but also provides a museumlike environment for patrons to enjoy great food, drinks and live music.” Ukrainian-born Nuta “Nudie” Kotlyarenko and his wife, Bobbie, started their world-renowned fashion brand from their garage in the 1940’s. Nudie’s Rodeo Tailor fashions were donned by the hottest in film and music including Gene Autry, Johnny Cash, John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Robert Redford, Porter Wagner and John Wayne, and more. One of Nudie’s most recognized, ostentatious contributions on display is Elvis Presley’s $10,000 gold lame’ suit that he wore on the cover of the “50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong” album. Nudie didn’t stop at clothing. He also customized automobiles, installing silver-dollar dashboards, pistol 14

door handles and gear shifts, extending rear bumpers and trimming vehicles with longhorn steer horns as hood ornaments. Nine “Nudie Mobiles” survive today, with his $400,000 1975 Cadillac El Dorado finding a permanent home on the wall at Nudie’s Honky Tonk. In addition to Nudie’s iconic vintage suits and country music artifacts, Broadway’s newest offering houses three live performance spaces and Nashville’s longest bar at more than 100 feet. This remarkable destination, located at 409 Broadway, is open Monday-Thursday from 11AM to 3AM, and Friday-Sunday from 10AM to 3AM. t’s no secret that many of the biggest stars in Nashville’s music history got their start at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis; the original address of Sun Records. Such legendary performers as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and even Conway Twitty passed through the historic studios of Sam Phillips throughout their careers. That legacy is celebrated at the Sun Diner located at 105 Third Ave. S in downtown Nashville. The diner serves as a tribute to the music that came from Phillips’ studio. “The musical histories of Nashville and Memphis are forever intertwined with each other, with so many artists beginning their career at Sun before taking their music to Nashville – and all over the world,” said Adam Hesler, President of TC Restaurant Group, the company which owns the establishment and hopes to continue the tribute to Sun Records in cities across the country. Continuing with the theme of making history, Sun Diner is Nashville’s first 24-hour restaurant to be located in the downtown area of Music City. “We are excited about being Nashville’s first 24-hour diner to open, especially right off of Broadway in the heart

of the Honky Tonk district,” says TC’s Hesler. “Because of the uniqueness of our always being open, we serve a wide variety of dishes – ranging from dinner to breakfast – for those going home after a night on Broadway, or for those about to start their day downtown.” The restaurant is a hot destination for tourists – and locals – who are looking for one last taste of southern hospitality during the early morning hours. The menu at the Sun Diner will most definitely take on a Memphis flavor with such listings as the “Love Me” Tenders – named after the classic Presley hit, as well as the “Cry, Cry, Cry” Hot Wings – with its name taken from the first major hit record from “The Man In Black.” Among the entrees include the “Million Dollar Quartet,” with its moniker taken from the iconic December 1956 session at the label with Presley, Lewis, Cash, and Carl Perkins. Consumers will get to pick their choice of four items among such delicious fare as Crispy Bacon, Sausage Patty, Chef Thomas’ Hash Browns, Cage-free organic eggs any style, Pancake, Waffle, and Granola Parfait. conic artists, session musicians, engineers, and producers were inducted in grand style with a concert showcasing their talents during the Musicians Hall of Fame Induction Concert on Oct. 26, 2016. 2016 inductees included Lou Bradley, Garth Brooks & The G-Men, Don Felder, Mark Miller, Jerry Reed, Allen Reynolds, Ron “Snake” Reynolds, Sigma Sound Studio Rhythm Section, Ricky Skaggs, and Joe Tarsia. GRAMMY winning saxophone player, Kenny G, brought the right amount of humor to the show as host asking folks, “Why am I hosting? Michael Bolton was busy,” he joked. Russell Thompkins, Jr. of The Stylistics introduced his longtime friends, the Sigma Sound Studio inductees, and expressed the strong influence these behind-the-scenes musicians had on his own career by saying, “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have had a job for the last 45 years … We forget all about the guys who put the tracks down and keep the beat going. This is their night.” Piano man and master, Bruce Hornsby, took the stage to honor his friend and musical partner, inductee Ricky Skaggs, to play Hornsby’s hit “The Way It Is.” Skaggs gave an emotional acceptance speech, talking about the importance of his family and faith. “It’s an incredible thing,” Skaggs said. “You know, God never called me to be famous. He called me to be faithful.” Inductee Jerry Reed received a grand welcome when Reed’s friend and fellow guitar wizard, Steve Wariner, took the stage telling humorous stories about the late country legend prior to playing some of Reed’s biggest hits, “Amos Moses” and “Eastbound & Down.” Reed’s daughters Seidina and Lottie honored their father and Seidina Reed said, “At some point in his 24 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

childhood, he fell in love with the sound of a guitar. He said, ‘That’s it! That’s what I’m gonna do.’ And boy, did he do it.” To the delight of the crowd, Garth Brooks, along with The G Men, his studio band who played on all of his iconic albums, took the stage to be inducted as a group and played several hits including “The Thunder Rolls,” and “Friends In Low Places.” In an emotional performance of “The Dance,” the band paid tribute to their late band member, Mike Chapman, while Chapman’s bass guitar sat on the stage. Brooks took the opportunity to laud his bandmates of almost 30 years for their indelible contribution to his success and life. “I keep hearing the word family,” he said from the podium. “That’s what we were.” Four recording engineers were also inducted, a category that is rarely honored in public. Engineers Lou Bradley, Mark Miller, Ron Reynolds, and Joe Tarsia received a standing ovation for their work. Brooks’ longtime producer, Allen Reynolds, was also inducted. GRAMMY Award winning artist and fellow inductee Peter Frampton joined former Eagle, Don Felder, to induct Felder into the Musicians Hall of Fame and present him with the Iconic Riff Award for “Hotel California.”“It’s truly with the deepest gratitude and greatest pride that I enter the Musicians Hall of Fame,” Felder said. “It wasn’t fame and it really wasn’t the money or success that drove me through all the years of starvation. It was the pure joy of playing music and making people happy…that’s what keeps me on the road today,” he added.

re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and Conway Twitty to Sara Evans and Toby Keith. There is

The Nashville Symphony

his year, the Nashville Symphony is commemorating both the orchestra’s 70th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its concert hall, Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Though it’s only a decade old, the Schermerhorn has already earned an international reputation for its crystalline acoustics, and it’s the perfect setting for experiencing everything from Mozart and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Ravel.

The Planets – An HD Odyssey (January 12-15) One of classical music’s most beloved and epic works, Holst’s The Planets will be accompanied by stunning highdefinition footage of deep space on a 70-foot screen high above the stage, courtesy of NASA. A truly one-of-akind musical and visual experience — and the perfect introduction to classical music for listeners of all ages.

Michael Feinstein – The Best of the American Songbook (February 2-4) One of America’s most celebrated and gifted vocalists, Michael Feinstein joins the Nashville Symphony for three nights of favorites from the Great American Songbook, including pieces by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and many more.

In addition to so much great classical music, the symphony also performs a diverse array of concerts designed to appeal to fans of all genres, from classical to country, from jazz to rock ’n’ roll — many featuring topflight artists. A sampling of the concert calendar offers plenty of amazing options for Nashville visitors:

Valentine’s with Frankie Valli (February 14-15) Treat your sweetheart to the ultimate Valentine’s experience as the legendary Frankie Valli performs with the original “Jersey Boys” and the Nashville Symphony. Take a trip back to some of the biggest hits of the ’60s and ’70s with the group whose unique vocal style and unforgettable tunes defined a generation.

The Temptations (February 16-18) Featuring original member Otis Williams, the quintessential Motown group joins the Nashville Symphony for nonstop mega-hits, spoton harmonies and syncopated moves. Stroll down memory lane with classics like “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and more.

Rite of Spring (February 23-25) One of the most revolutionary works in the entire classical repertoire, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring still sounds as thrilling and edgy as it did 100 years ago, when it actually caused a riot in Paris. This concert will also feature the Schermerhorn’s breathtaking Martin Foundation Concert Organ on a new piece by Terry Riley that will showcase this instrument’s aweinspiring range of sound.

The intimate design and crystal-clear acoustics at Schermerhorn Symphony Ceneter guarantee an exceptional experience regardless of where you sit – and there’s not a bad seat in the house! Can’t make a concert? Free tours – offered most Mondays and Saturdays – are a wonderful way to enjoy the Schermerhorn’s breathtaking architecture and learn about the Nashville Symphony’s long history at the heart of the Music City sound. Jack’s Bar-B-Que

F

or “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and awardwinning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. music city trivia & fun facts

DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 54 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. DID YOU KNOW… The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station. January/February 2017
