It interweaves the professional and the personal of Alan Jackson and includes awards, instruments, costumes, and mementos, many that fans will recognize from his concerts and music videos. Among the artifacts on display in the exhibit will be: • The guitar he played on the CMA Awards when he debuted “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” just two months after the September 11 terrorist attacks and the nation’s response that inspired the song. • The front of an old, red Ford pickup truck that served as Jackson’s first Fan Fair booth, before his sister and brother-inlaw had it made into a desk. • Items from Jackson’s collection of “Mayberry” memorabilia – a jacket, jersey and autographed picture from Don Knotts – from one of his favorite television shows, The Andy Griffith Show. • Jackson’s first tricycle, childhood bike and scooter, evidence that his love of vehicles started early. • Harley-Davidson motorcycle from the cover of the seminalalbum A Lot About Livin’ (And a Little ‘bout Love). • The water ski Jackson rode, while wearing his trademark white cowboy hat, in the “Chattahoochee” music video. • A collection of belt buckles from the Houston Rodeo – which Jackson has played more than 20 times.

here is only one Music City, and today Nashville continues its emergence as a cultural, artistic and entertainment-rich destination, filled with unique music, a myriad of art galleries, botanical gardens and greenways, historic homes, honkytonks and culinary delights. There’s a whole host of attractions that have made Music City famous. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which includes over a million artifacts exploring country’s connections to blues, R&B and pop, will also feature the temporary exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country opening in March 2012. Across the street stands the home of the Grammy-award winning Nashville Symphony, the dazzling $123 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Inspired by the greatest concert halls in the world, the 197,000-square-foot classically-

columned venue offers an unparalleled acoustical experience. Nashville has a pristine collection of antebellum estate mansions: Belle Meade, where a string of winning thoroughbreds was raised; The Hermitage, presidential home of Andrew Jackson; and Belmont Mansion, drenched in Victorian grandeur. Tour the beautifully-restored hilltop State Capitol building, then walk down to the Tennessee State Museum for an educational tour of the state’s history and culture. Dubbed the Athens of the South for its elegance, style and many academic institutions, Nashville claims a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with the 42-ft high statue Athena, the tallest indoor sculpture in the western world. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, an exquisitely converted Art Deco post office, hosts roving exhibitions changing every couple of months. The mansion at Cheekwood houses an extensive art gallery surrounded by 55 acres of divine gardens. What truly sets the city apart is the music. Music is the very heart of Nashville. Long recognized as the world’s capital of country music, Music City also boasts sounds of pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues and soul. Supported by rhythm tracks of culture and history, Nashville is uniquely and authentically “Music City.” In Nashville you can hear great music 24/7, 365 days a year. A great place to begin a tour is on Lower Broadway where honky tonks line the street. Here you’ll find evocative names like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World, and you never know who you might see (or hear), a current star or the next big thing.

Live Music Concert with Keith Urban

You’ll catch star-dusted pickers and songwriters all over town, in places like bluegrass venue Station Inn, the rockin’ Exit/In, the honky tonkin’ bars on Broadway, the song-centered Bluebird Café or the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Of course, the ultimate country venue is the Grand Ole Opry House, where legends and current stars perform on the nation’s longest-running live radio program. Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities. Nashville’s palate offers everything from Southen fare to haute cuisine with quite literally everything in between. Here, a perfect barbecue is as celebrated as the most spectacular creation from any of the city’s award-winning chefs. Whether it’s a family-friendly meal, dinner and a show or a romantic repast, the city’s restaurants serve every dish with a side of Southern hospitality. With its charming mix of musical, historical and cultural flavors, Nashville is truly a city for all seasons and styles. So whether it’s listening to live music, soaking in the art scene, exploring history or simply relaxing, you’ll find many ways to enjoy Music City and discover why music calls us home.

Goo Goo Cluster

I

n 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, the world’s first ever combination candy bar was born. Goo Goo Clusters, roundish mounds of luscious caramel, smooth creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, have been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since! Goo Goos were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, ladies would swaddle the Goo Goo Clusters in tinfoil. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the Goo Goo Cluster. Today, the process of making Goo Goos is so streamlined that Standard Candy in Nashville can produce 20,000 Goo Goo Clusters an hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme (made with pecans instead of peanuts), and Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. This year saw another exciting addition to its offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville, the Goo Goo Shop. “Since Goo Goo Cluster’s centennial in 2012, we’ve been looking for a way to return to Downtown Nashville where it all started back in 1912,” said Lance Paine, Executive Vice President of Goo Goo Cluster, LLC. “The Goo Goo Shop will allow visitors to see Premium Goo Goo Clusters being made, learn about the history of the brand and shop for Goo Goo Cluster memorabilia and merchandise.” Premium Goo Goos, a new gourmet line extension featuring rotating flavors, will be available exclusively at the Goo Goo Shop located at 116 3rd Avenue S beginning in November 2014. Nashville: Athens of the South

I

n The Parthenon stands proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville’s premier urban park. The re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals. Originally built for Tennessee’s 1897 Centennial Exposition, this replica of the original Parthenon in Athens serves as a monument to what is considered the pinnacle of classical architecture. The plaster replicas of the Parthenon Marbles found in the Naos are direct casts of the original sculptures which adorned the pediments of the Athenian Parthenon, dating back to 438 B.C. The originals of these powerful fragments are housed in the British Museum in London. The Parthenon also serves as the city of Nashville’s art museum. The focus of the Parthenon’s permanent collection is a group of 63 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists donated by James M. Cowan. Additional gallery spaces provide a venue for a variety of temporary shows and exhibits. Athena In the 1920s the Parthenon was rebuilt as a full-scale replica of the ancient Parthenon with one large exception. The colossal statue of Athena from ancient times was not in this replica. In 1982, the city commissioned Alan LeQuire to build a full-scale replica of Athena Parthenos. Soon after, a group of concerned citizens formed the Athena Fund. Starting with funds accumulated over the years from the nickels and dimes of school children and tourists, the Athena Fund grew rapidly through private and commercial donations. The Artist • In 1982 seven sculptors submitted proposals to recreate the Athena statue in Nashville. Alan LeQuire won the commission because of his skill and commitment to accuracy. LeQuire attended Vanderbilt University and received his MFA from University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 1981. • LeQuire, a Nashville native, began his journey by researching the Athena statue of antiquity. What we know about the 18

getaway nashville and middle tennessee

Athena statue from the ancient Parthenon is somewhat limited. The gold and ivory statue was lost by the 400 A.D., so historical documentation is brief, but does exist. LeQuire also depended on modern classical scholars for the most recent archaeological information. The Original Sculptor Pheidias, the greatest sculptor of classical antiquity, constructed the Athena Parthenos on a wooden framework with carved ivory for skin and a gold wardrobe. The statue was unveiled and dedicated in 438 or 437 B.C. We can depend on this date based on the building accounts of the temple. Other sources are equally important. For example, there are ancient authors, such as Pausanias, who referred to the Athena statue in writings. Athena appears on Athenian coins of the second and first centuries B.C. Later, Romans copied the statue in small-scale. Even today on the Acropolis you can see the outline of Athena’s base on the floor of the Parthenon. All of this evidence is culminated in LeQuire’s Athena. The Re-creation • After exhaustive research, Alan LeQuire created two smallscale versions of the statue out of clay. First, he created a 1:10 model from clay. Later, he sculpted a 1:5 scale model. From this later model LeQuire spent about three years enlarging and casting the full-size Athena Parthenos. Athena was cast out of gypsum cement in many molds and assembled inside the Parthenon. Each section was attached to a steel armature for support. The Athena statue was constructed from 1982 to 1990. It stood in Nashville’s Parthenon as a plain, white statue for 12 years. In 2002 the Parthenon gilded Athena with Alan LeQuire and master gilder Lou Reed in charge of the project. The gilding project took less than 4 months and makes Athena appear that much closer to the ancient Athena Parthenos. In addition to gilding, the project included painted details on her face, wardrobe and shield. The Parthenon is located at Nashville’s Centennial Park, 2500 West End Avenue, 615862-8400.

As part of its commemoration of Andrew Jackson’s astounding victory at New Orleans, The Hermitage is inviting all U.S. military personnel, active and retired, to visit Andrew Jackson’s home free of charge in 2015. The new exhibit, titled Andrew Jackson: Born for a Storm, marks the first comprehensive change to the exhibit content in the Andrew Jackson Center in 25 years. Born for a Storm is part of a new campaign to revisit Jackson’s place in history and shift the focus of the National Landmark site from the mansion to the man. The name of the exhibit comes from a famous Jackson quote: “I was born for a storm, and a calm does not suit me.” Admission to the site will be free and open to all on January 8 to encourage the public to take part in the celebration, which will include a keynote speech from presidential biographer and Jackson scholar H.W. Brands from the University of Texas at Austin and demonstrations and programs honoring the military. Visitors to the exhibit will get a new look at Jackson, starting with his early life as a frontiersman through his military and political careers and ending with a look at his legacy – both the negative and the positive aspects of his administration and policies – through new artwork, artifacts, interactive elements and interviews with historians like Jon Meacham.

“The new exhibit will totally transform our exhibit space,” said Howard Kittell, president and CEO of The Hermitage. “We’ll have all-new interactive features and updated imagery in addition to all of the rare and unique artifacts that make The Hermitage the most accurately preserved presidential site in the country.” One element of the exhibit is focused on the Battle of New Orleans, one of the final and most storied battles of the War of 1812, in which then-General Andrew Jackson led a small group of American soldiers, Tennessee volunteers, freedmen and pirates to victory against a much larger and experienced British force. The victory was decisive and swift, and it catapulted Jackson into the national spotlight – and the United States onto the world stage as a major power. Because of the significance of the Battle of New Orleans and Jackson’s military background, The Hermitage has decided to change its policy and cover admission for all current and former military personnel in 2015, not just active-duty service members. “Despite being our nation’s seventh president, Jackson was most proud of being a major general,” Kittell said. “We want to reflect Jackson’s pride in military service.” The Hermitage has hired nationally known design firm Solid Light of Louisville, Ky., to develop the new exhibit. Some of Solid Light’s past work includes the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Miss., the Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto, Ky., and the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Ind.

About The Hermitage Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage: Home of the People’s President is one of the largest and most visited presidential homes in the United States. In 1856, the state of Tennessee purchased the property from the Jackson family, entrusting it to the Ladies’ Hermitage Association in 1889 to operate as one of America’s first historic site museums. Today, The Hermitage is a 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark with more than 30 historic buildings, including restored slave cabins. In recent years, new interpretive initiatives and educational programs such as archaeology and the history of slavery have enhanced the experience of more than 180,000 annual visitors. re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 28 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. The Nashville Zoo’s

Kangaroo Kickabout By Mary Brenna Corr Photos courtesy of Amiee Stubbs

T

here are now even more roo’s to encounter at Nashville ’s Kangaroo Kickabout exhibit. Up to six of the Zoo’s nine female kangaroos are carrying joeys, and several have reached the stage in development where they are poking out of their mothers’ pouches and can be seen by guests. “We have been waiting with anticipation for a joey sighting since confirming the first pregnancy in April,” said Kacie Cummings, Contact Areas Supervisor. “Our joeys range in age from one month to six months, so getting the opportunity to see them at the different stages of development throughout the next year will be exciting for our guests.” Like all marsupials, kangaroos have a short gestation period and are born furless, blind and about the size of a jelly bean. Immediately at birth, they crawl into the mother’s pouch and nurse until they are large enough to venture outside the pouch and explore their surroundings. Red kangaroos are one of four species of kangaroo and are native to the open plains of inland Australia. Though they are named for their red fur, males actually have a much richer red coloring than females, which are often more gray. You can distinguish a red kangaroo from others by the white stripe extending from the corner of the mouth to the base of the ear. Red kangaroos are considered the largest living marsupials, with males reaching a height of nearly 5 feet tall and weighing as much as 190 pounds. They move by hopping on their large lower legs, using their strong tail for balance. In fact, their legs are so powerful that kangaroos have been known to reach hopping speeds of 40 mph.

During winter, the Zoo’s animal care staff will be making a daily decision on whether the kangaroos will be on exhibit. Though the species is tolerant to cold weather, the joeys, especially those that are furless, may decide to stay inside the pouch a little longer for warmth. Nashville Zoo is accredited by the prestigious Association of Zoos and Aquariums, assuring the highest standards of animal care and husbandry. Attracting more than 800,000 visitors annually, the Zoo is considered one of the top things to do in Nashville. The Zoo is a non-profit organization located at 3777 Nolensville Pike and is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The mission of Nashville Zoo is to inspire a culture of understanding and discovery of our natural world through conservation, innovation and leadership. For more information about Nashville Zoo, call 615-833-1534 or visit www.nashvillezoo.org.

Jack’s Bar-B-Que

F

or “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and awardwinning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. All 3 historic locations, 334 West Trinity Lane at Historic Talbot Corner, 1601 Charlotte Avenue on the Historic Prison Grounds at the foot of Capital Hill and 416 Broadway at the heart of the Honky Tonks on Lower Broadway. “Taking Care of Business since 1976”. A must see in Nashville

he Johnny Cash Museum features the largest collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the world. From The Man in Black’s earliest childhood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here. Exhibits chronicle Johnny’s life and provide a very personal and unique glimpse into his world. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Our newest exhibit, Legends of Sun Records, features artifacts, films and musical recordings from Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. Among the artifacts featured are some of the earliest Presley pieces ever discovered, a pair of Roy Orbison’s signature eyeglasses, handwritten lyrics to the Rock and Roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes and much more.
