LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Marriage equality is now a reality in America folks! I am thrilled, yet at the same time I am grounded. That’s because I have to make sure to remind myself that as we come up as a community, it’s vital that our entire community shares in the benefits of progress. Throughout history, oppressors have pushed TLGB individuals to the margins. No one has waited longer than our trans brothers and sisters for their time in the sun. Finally, over the last few years the world began paying attention. In May 2014 TIME magazine put Laverne Cox on its cover and ran the headline “The Transgender Tipping Point”. Today, over a year later, it’s clear the magazine was right. The July 2015 issue of Gay Vegas is all about trans individuals and their allies (both nationally and locally) – not because we planned it that way, but because it’s a movement no force can stop. Mariah Carey may seem like an odd choice to be on the cover of our Trans / Anniversary issue – that is until you consider that she has supported, and has been supported by, the TLGB community throughout her entire career. Not to mention the fact that she has been an inspiration for tons of performers (many of whom identify as trans) and for anyone looking for the perfect role model of femininity. You’re going to have a blast getting to know more about Vegas’ new resident icon when you read our exclusive interview.

Of course we couldn’t release such an issue without mention of Caitlyn Jenner. Her story has captured the attention of the world and it seems everyone has an opinion. Well we asked for the opinion of a local Vegas TLGB community member and we’re happy to be able to share it with you. This month we also highlight two trans issues in the news that hit close to home – the pressure on Nevada’s Clark County School District to release a report on transgender policy progress, and the state’s extension of health care coverage to transgender individuals, which begins this month. This issue also features a personal reflection from our publisher, John Lawrence, who gives us his special perspective on marriage equality. I’m sure you’ll be as touched by his piece as I was. If you believe that everything happens for a reason, then indeed there was no better time than now for an issue dedicated to the trans community. That this joy is compounded with our marriage equality win, well, that just makes my heart soar. In any case, I’m just so proud that we’re able to bring you this very special edition of Gay Vegas. 4 Gay Vegas Magazine

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s a very exciting time to be an American. On Friday, June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality across the nation. For the first time in my life I feel validated and loved by my country. I have never felt more human and equal in my life as I do right now because of this historical milestone. The fight for TLGB rights is not over, but this was a huge battle won.

Yet, it has brought a lot of underlying discrimination to the surface. We must be strong in defending love and our freedom to love. It is evident that we as a country have a long way to go, but this ruling was a big step in the right direction. You will notice our digital issue has more content than our printed version – we have done this as a teaser of things to come for our Gay Vegas printed issue. This extended digital platform allows us to include an expanded community resources section for our TLGB community and the non-profit organizations that support us. Speaking of support, this anniversary issue is also our trans issue, and we discuss some of the local and national trans community news that has been in the public eye lately. This is truly a pivotal moment for the TLGB community, and I’m delighted to see significant advances in social justice for the trans community in particular. We are thrilled for our trans brothers and sisters and hope for many more gains in the near future. In this issue I had the opportunity to ask Mariah Carey some Vegas related questions, which I can tell you was a lot of fun. We also have a great interview with Adam Lambert, which I think you will really enjoy, along with lots of summer fun articles and event photos. All in all, I think you will love this issue and the further opportunity it provides us to celebrate TLGB history. Until next issue. Love, JOHN LAWRENCE PUBLISHER

TRANSGENDER

HEALTH COVERAGE As of July 1, Nevada state employees and their dependent family members will have health coverage for transgender procedures thanks to a new insurance policy. Back in November, the Public Employee Benefits Program (PEBP) board voted for the removal of language in Nevada’s self-funded and HMO plans that excluded therapy for gender dysphoria – meaning that up until this July gender reassignment surgery and other treatments related to sex changes were not covered. “We commend the Nevada state PEBP board for making this significant step to ensure that transgender employees have access to lifesaving care,” Brock Maylath, president of the Transgender Allies Group, said in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “Medical treatment should be determined by conversations between a patient and a doctor, rather than on arbitrary exclusions created by an insurance company.” The Review-Journal also quotes Donna Lopez, quality control officer for PEBP, as saying that a report found that providing the additional coverage would “have little to no impact on the system’s overall financial health or claims obligations.” The new modifications mean the PEBP will 8 Gay Vegas Magazine

provide coverage for medical, surgical or prescription drug treatment expenses related to sex change procedures. This also includes coverage for preparation or complications connected to the procedures. The program will not cover any procedures considered cosmetic, like hair removal. There is no maximum benefit limit, although gender reassignment is limited to one surgery per individual. The regular plan deductibles and co-insurance will still be in effect. Minutes from the board’s November meeting show that only one member, Rosalie Garcia, voted against the recommendations. According to Lopez, there wasn’t any public opposition. She adds, “Under the policy, sex change patients would be required to undergo a precertification and case management review to assure that any questions a patient might have about the procedures or providers are answered.” In 2014 the program paid out about $100 million in claims. It’s responsible for covering more than 40,000 participants and 29,000 family members and survivors. One of the HMOs participating is Health Plan of Nevada in the Las Vegas area.

Tom Ford speaks, gets $20 Million At the recent Cannes Film Festival, Tom Ford announced his intention to make his next feature, Nocturnal Animals, and Focus stepped in with $20 million of confidencebuilding cash. The fashion designer/ filmmaker’s last movie, A Single Man, earned strong reviews and Oscar nominations, which is exactly the kind of film Universal’s Focus division loves to make, so this is a no-brainer for everyone. Ford will produce, direct and adapt the screenplay from Austin Wright’s 1993 novel, Tony and Susan, and the project is slated to star Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. As of right now, the plot is bare bones, revolving around a woman receiving her ex-husband’s first novel in the mail, which then sets her on her own path of self-discovery. Vague-ish, true, but you never show your hand too early. More news as it develops, but for now, just know that it’s pretty good to be Tom Ford.

enthusiasm for the Tony Award-winning Fun Home, but Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir turned stage musical is as sweetly intoxicating as a show gets, and we can’t help hoping for more success. So here’s some speculation, the kind where we hope that just talking about it makes it come true. There is rumor, hinted at by director Sam Gold, of expanding Home’s theater audience and opening it in London’s West End next, a fairly routine move when an acclaimed musical takes home the top prize. But for theater-deprived audiences

in smaller towns, it’s the movie that counts. The producers, for their part, are being cagey about a film, standard practice when you’re fielding offers. “There’s definitely been interest in a film,” they’ve been reported as saying, before adding more non-specific words about being “open to anything” and wanting “to do what’s best for (the show).” So, OK, sure, none of this is official news. It’s more like people talking around an idea of news, which is how non-news eventually becomes news in Hollywood. Now we wait and hope it does just that.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, a dramatic comedy about soldiers spending their last few days before returning to Iraq. It co-stars Vin Diesel, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Martin, Pitch Perfect’s Ben Platt, and the somewhat reclusive Chris Tucker. The lesson of the moment, then, is this: the work is what lasts, boyfriends and girlfriends (or both) come and go.

Kristen Stewart’s Long Halftime Walk

Last year, we reported on Out In The Night a disturbing documentary from director Blair Dorosh-Walther that was, then, making the rounds of TLGB film festivals. It’s the story of four black lesbian friends – Renata Hill, Patreese Johnson, Terrain Dandridge, and Venice Brown – who were attacked by a man in New York’s Greenwich Village, and who then wasted no time defending themselves. It was a violent incident and, for their selfdefense efforts, the women were tried and sentenced to between three and 11 years in prison. Meanwhile, they were slandered in racist media reports as “bloodthirsty” and a “gang.” Now their story will reach a national audience when Logo Documentary Films presents the film on June 22 as part of an ongoing series of queer docs. The cable channel is to be praised for selecting this hard-hitting, difficult subject matter over lighter, feel-good fare, especially when the cause of TLGB equality is, marriage or no marriage, still as vital as ever. Set that DVR.

Let’s not get too excited about Kristen Stewart. The Millenials aren’t as into labels and the “event” nature of coming out as generations that paved the road before. And good for them, because that’s freedom. So is K-Stew dating a woman now? It very well looks like it, and her mother has flipflopped on talking about it in public. Is she bisexual? Probably. Maybe. Who knows. It only matters for our purposes because now we get to talk about her career as an actor in the same way we talk about Amber Heard, an entertainment figure whose life involves same-sex relationships from time to time. Good for us, then, that Stewart’s post-Twilight is turning out so well. She’s shaken the Internet’s fanboy disdain for that series and is currently getting rave reviews for her role in the acclaimed arthouse film Clouds of Sils Maria, with Juliette Binoche. Stewart’s currently shooting Ang Lee’s latest,

The Abbey is coming to TV. No, not the one at Downton.

Jane Lynch is an Angel From Hell There was never a question in our minds that after Glee ended, its breakout star, Jane Lynch, would fly even higher than before. So it’s barely news – even though it’s totally breaking news – that you’ll be seeing her again on the small screen this fall in Angel From Hell. The sitcom stars Maggie Lawson as a doctor with a “perfect” life, but whose existence nevertheless endures the arrival of 12 Gay Vegas Magazine

There is a gay bar in West Hollywood that is very large and very popular. It’s called The Abbey. It sits right next to Pump, the location of the reality series Vanderpump Rules. Somebody put 2+2 together and decided to give The Abbey its own reality series, too. Lucky, lucky all of us who like to watch TV shows about bickering bartenders. Not that The Abbey doesn’t deserve some sort of recognition: It was voted two-time winner of Logo’s “Best Gay Bar in The World” award, an honor that carries weight throughout the global population of tipsy gays. So it was time for the place to be the star of its own show. And to that end, TV-ready staff is being auditioned to pretend to work there as hard as the aspiring actors who already work there. See how entertainment works? No shoot dates yet. No network announced yet. But if the final product can approach even half of the pleasure that The A-List New York was (Miss you Rodiney. So much.) then it’s going to be must-watch television.

Ellen Page and Allison Janney re-team for Tallulah

The lesbian movie of the Summer can’t get here soon enough

Orange is The New Black writer Sian Heder is directing her first feature,Tallulah, and the main cast has known each other for a minute. Ellen Page (the upcoming, long-awaited Freeheld) and Allison Janney (CBS’s Mom) have already worked together in Juno and in Lynn Shelton’s indie Touchy Feely, but they’ll soon team up for Heder’s dramatic comedy about three women and a baby that, depending on which plot synopsis you’re reading, is either being kidnapped from or rescued by a babysitter and a Beverly Hills housewife. Maybe it’s all of those things at once, we’re not sure, but we trust the comedic power from this creative team. The project is currently in the pre-production stage, so we don’t even know the identity of the third lead yet. Updates as they surface.

The fact is that The Summer of Sangaile may not get to you before the end of summer. It’s a small film. It’s a small film from Lithuania. It’s a small film from Lithuania that’s still on the film festival circuit and will continue on that course until at least August. But it’s one you’ll want to see when you get your chance. That’s because it’s yet another sensitive, emotional, drama about two teenage girls (newcomers Aiste Dirziute and Julija Steponaityte) who fall into a swooning, mutually bolstering romance, and it’s good. It’s very, very good. It follows in the tradition of The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love and My Summer of Love and Show Me Love, and it’s already getting rave reviews from critics and audiences everywhere it screens. And now you know what your most anticipated lesbiancentric film of the year is going to be. (That is, unless you’ve not yet acquainted yourself with the one named for a man but that’s all about Imperator Furiosa). For the rest of you, we guess you’ll just have to go watch Entourage over and over. Sorry.

Es la rola que no paro de escuchar - We Go Hard or We Go Home - SUBELE!

PRIDE CONNECTIONS

The Reframing of

ADAM LAMBERT The singer opens up about his ‘outlandish’ past, the lack of TLGB pop stars and his dating problems Stripped of that glossy sheen, those painted nails and the purple mane that he famously flaunted on his 2009 post- American Idol debut, For Your Entertainment, Adam Lambert’s latest album cover isn’t even in color. His hair still reaches the same towering heights as his voice on The Original High, but otherwise, he’s unadorned. The glam is gone. In our recent interview, the Idol alum comes clean about how a long period of “overcompensation” – yes, the outfits – led him to the latest chapter in his life. People are calling The Original High a reinvention. Is that how you see it? It’s not the most far off thing. I consider it more like a “reframing.” I feel like it’s still me at the heart of it. It’s still my voice, but a little more grown up, and I feel like the sonic frame around the vocals is something new. Why tweak your sound? Because repeating myself would be sacrilege. I will not repeat myself. But I don’t know – something new. I wanted to do something fresh, and I wanted to do something that sounded like my life, and this is the kind of music that I listen to. 16 Gay Vegas Magazine

Do your famously passionate fans add pressure to the creative process? Because my fans are so loyal and loving, and they’re so passionate about all the things that I do, I think that they recognize that if it’s something I believe in that’s exciting, they get excited by that. I always think about the fans, but with this album, more than ever, I’ve gone inward and wanted to make music that I have some integrity with, that meant something to me. Why at this point in your career? It’s time. It was time to make a shift, to do something a little different. I went through a lot of changes last year. I ended up leaving my first label (RCA Records), and I had to change management at the end of my last album; it was just time for something fresh. I just got off the tour with Queen, which was amazing for me and felt really good, and it gave me a lot of confidence and it made me not so scared about everything. It gave me a sense of career security in a way that I haven’t felt before. What were you scared of? You’ve clearly never had trouble being yourself. Over the last five years, right after Idol, I think there was a certain amount of overcompensation in certain ways. I was dressing really outlandishly, and it was a lot of fun and it’s definitely a part of who I am to wanna play dress up, but I think it got to a point where I was hiding behind it a bit. Behind all of that, all of everything. It was like a preemptive defense mechanism. It’s like the kid who goes to high school dressed goth and he’s actually not into the devil at all but doesn’t wanna be bothered by anybody.

(Laughs) I don’t think I realized it at the time, but I can see this in hindsight now. At the time I thought, “This is who I am; this is what I do,” and now it just feels like I’m in a new place in my life. I’ve grown up and evolved and I’m in a new place, and the album – the subject matter and the sound – reflect that. When it comes to TLGB artists, you really helped pave the way. These days, how welcoming do you think the music industry is to queer artists? I think things are definitely going in the right direction. I just wanna see more! The great thing about having more and more artists who identify as queer is it normalizes it so the media can’t sensationalize it as an idea. In the past, I felt the media painted me as someone who’s super hypersexual and someone who only wants to talk about his orientation. While I’m very comfortable doing that, I have a lot more to talk about in reality. So, it’s been interesting. But the more of us that are out there that provide some diversity, who can show different types of gay artists, it’ll make it so it’s not as much of a big deal. It’ll be an afterthought. We’ll get to move toward a post-gay presence. Hearing your collaboration with Tove Lo on “Rumors” on this album got me thinking: What do you think of doing a love song with another gay male artist, like Sam Smith or Jake Shears? It’s certainly possible, yeah. With “Rumors,” it’s funny; you can listen to that and go, “Oh, it’s like a romantic duet,” but before we wrote it we were talking about being an artist in the industry and having to maintain a personal life, and how it’s a little tricky and how it’s GayVegas.com

PRIDE CONNECTIONS not always easy to balance the two. So, that’s what we were singing about; it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re singing to each other – it just means we’re singing about this thing together. But yeah, a duet with a guy – who knows, it could happen!

were looking for an answer. All of a sudden we’re giving so much power to the people. That was really impressive, because up until that point the labels really held the strings and decided what the public was going to consume.

It should happen. You have to carry the flag! (Laughs)

Mariah Carey recently called American Idol “fake” and had some pointed words for the show. As a former contestant on the show, how did you feel about what she said? Did American Idol ever feel “fake” to you? It’s a TV show. I didn’t feel like it was fake at all. I knew what the concept was. Personally, if you’re blindsided by what American Idol is, then you weren’t paying attention. It’s not that difficult to know what you’re getting yourself into. That’s why I auditioned; I knew what I was getting myself into. Essentially, it’s a strategy for a contestant. It is about talent and it is about being a good performer, but you also have to put some thought into the songs you’re picking. I put some thought into it, and that’s partially why I think I did well. Picking a genre, picking songs that work for you, picking songs where you won’t be compared. For me, I was picking songs that are more obscure or doing them a different way.

Right?! Isn’t that what we’ve been saying since the beginning of your career? It’s definitely been interesting. Really interesting. When I see that there can be a ripple effect of positivity and change and helping people just because I identify as one thing or another, and I’m OK to talk about it, that’s amazing. It’s amazing that it takes that little to make that much of an impact. American Idol wraps next year. In your opinion, what happened to the show? Why haven’t we seen another Kelly or Carrie or Adam in recent years? I’m not totally sure about that, but I do know that when the show first started it was a time in America when we needed something like that. I mean, 9/11 had just happened, so our country was looking for something to believe in. Not that American Idol healed us over 9/11 by itself, but it definitely reflected what we wanted from our entertainment at the time. It gave people hope that, hey, you can be from anywhere and you can have this dream and it can come true, and it was really positive in that regard. It also came at a time when the music industry was really suffering. I mean, we had all the pirating that was going on; all of a sudden the Internet had taken the rug out from underneath the record companies, and they 18 Gay Vegas Magazine

You were crafty about it. I’m crafty, yeah! I try to be crafty. (Laughs) And I think for the judges it’s a different game than it is for the contestants, obviously, and things shifted a bit when the show wanted to focus on the judges more than the contestants. When we chatted in 2012, you told me a Glambert sent you a urethra rod. What’s

the craziest thing you’ve ever done for an artist you were a fan of? I’ve never done anything like that! That was so weird when that happened. I didn’t even know what that was. Like, “what the hell is this thing?” Then I looked it up and went “whaaaaat?” I remember saying, “That’s a thing? People do that?!” I have to say, I’ve never been a super fanatical fan of anybody. I’ve definitely been a fan. I mean, my fans have called me out before, being like, “Oh, you’re fan-boying about so-and-so,” and it’s just because I said on Twitter, “Oh, you sound great on this song,” so I guess that’s being a fan! How often do Glamberts stop you on the street? It happens occasionally. Maybe not so much on the street… (laughs) I know that’s just an expression. Yes, literally in the street, in front of a car. (Laughs) “Stop! Don’t!” I sourced a few questions out to your biggest fans, so from here on, these are straight from the Glamberts. First, what is the greatest “Original High” you’ve ever experienced? Standing on stage for the first time and singing. That adrenaline rush you get from that exchange with the audience is like nothing else. It bit me and then that was it. I was toast. What do you think about when you go to sleep? My brain is crazy. I think a lot, so I think about everything I have to do the next day. Sometimes it’s hard for me to fall asleep because of that.

If you could do something all over again, what would it be? I don’t really have a lot of regrets, to be honest with you. I guess there have been plenty of times where I’ll meet somebody at a bar, or a friend will introduce me to somebody at a party or at dinner, and I don’t have good game. I don’t think to be outgoing or say the right thing, and then after the fact I’ll be like, “Why didn’t I just talk to that person? Why didn’t I just tell them I thought they were cute?!” I gotta say, sometimes I really don’t have very good game. One fan wanted to know if you ever feel uncomfortable watching what’s said about you by the Glamberts on Twitter. I don’t think “uncomfortable” is the right word, but I’m not always the best at taking a compliment. I’m pretty hard on myself and sarcastic about things, so it’s always flattering, but it makes me feel like, “Ehh, let’s talk about something else.” What’s the first thing that attracts you to a man you’re interested in? Charm. I think charm is an amazing thing because it can make them more attractive than they are – or, without it, it can make them less attractive. I think that’s something that’s developed as I’ve gotten older. Obviously, I have my set of physical things that I like, but if somebody’s a dud and they have no personality then it all goes out the window. Charm and personality are key. What’s one question you’re glad you’ve never had to answer? (Laughs) I think I’ve had to answer every fucking thing you can think of! GayVegas.com

Students and parents demand transgender policy from CCSD After pressure from students and parents, officials from Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD) will soon have to address their lack of policy regarding the protection and accommodation of transgender students. On May 28, a group of transgender students and their parents spoke to the board and reaffirmed their requests for a policy that addresses the needs of all students, regardless of gender identity and expression. The primary priorities are accommodation in public facilities, like bathrooms and locker rooms, and districtwide training to teach faculty members and staff how to address and support transgender individuals. After years of requests from advocates, District F Trustee Carolyn Edwards has now asked district officials to prepare a report on what work the CCSD has done regarding such a policy. The Las Vegas Review-Journal quotes Edwards as saying that the district has already begun researching other states’ transgender policies. “I don’t know the solution,” Edwards stated. “But we need to have a conversation.” 20 Gay Vegas Magazine

In 2014 an internal draft of administrative guidance distributed by the district proposed, among other things, “referring to all students by their preferred name and gender pronouns and allowing them to use the restroom that corresponds to their ‘sincerely held’ gender identity,” this according to the Review-Journal. But the CCSD never formally introduced the guidance as a result of state lawmakers having introduced a bill that would have made it mandatory for students to use restrooms corresponding to their biological sex. The legislation, however, failed, and the district is still to announce a timeline for introducing the guidance. The U.S. Department of Education has made threats to pull funding from schools that don’t have non-discrimination policies protecting transgender students. Nevada’s significantly smaller Washoe County School District enacted regulation to protect transgender students back in February. As matters currently stand, the CCSD has taken and continues to take a case-by-case approach with each student.

11 SONGS TO PIMP YOUR PRIDE PLAYLIST

You don’t have to part with your Madonna. You can keep your Diana Ross, your other divas and all the queer classics that stoke your Pride playlist. But is your rainbow losing its luster? Is “We Are Family” really still your go-to? Splash some new color into your celebratory mix with these not-ancient anthems. “We Exist,” Arcade Fire There’s no ignoring us now, but still – it never 22 Gay Vegas Magazine

BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI

hurts to remind non-queers that we have a place in the world too. On this feisty rally cry directly inspired by the TLGB movement, these Canadian allies stand up with us, rocking their way through an ’80s-inspired call for equality.

“Dance with Me,” Kelly Clarkson Leave your right-wing angst at the door and douse yourself in the shimmering sounds of Miss Independent’s neon-bright dance delight. No crying. No fighting. No shaming. Kelly Clarkson won’t have any of it… unless it involves body bumping. And glitter, because obviously. “All Kinds of Kinds,” Miranda Lambert “Thomas was a congressman with closets full of skeletons,” the country superstar sings, before delivering the real kicker: “... and dresses that he wore on Friday nights.” With compelling character vignettes and a wise assessment of ignorance, Lambert’s guitar-guided ditty celebrates every color of the rainbow. “Unbelievers,” Vampire Weekend C a p t u r i n g unification in all its magical heart-happy glory is this Vampire Weekend groove. As it playfully bounces about, just you try not to get wrapped up in the evocative adorability of the NYC hipsters’ sweet sentiment – love – dedicated to the world’s nonconformists.

“Looking Hot,” No Doubt Calling all spotlight stealers – this one’s for you. A declaration of fierceness, Gwen Stefani struts her stuff all over this ska-flavored synth song, urging anyone in her path to “go ahead and stare, and take a picture please.” It’s how you’ll feel when you join that sexy sea of gays, wearing your “clothes.” “Together You and I,” Dolly Parton To make much headway, we gotta do it hand in hand, right? Dolly knows, and she’s preaching it on this bit of buoyant, pop-country inspiration. “Paint a pretty rainbow with love across the sky,” the Country Queen sings, as if they’re not already painted across every sky, and above every gay. “Burning Gold,” Christina Perri

Pop singer-songwriter Christina Perri is done waiting and hoping for change to just magically happen. So, with a thundering drum beat behind her, she stops wishing and starts realizing, igniting the flame that’s been right there in her hands the whole time. “Queen,” Perfume Genius

Who runs the world? You! Mike Hadreas (aka Perfume Genius) gives you permission – not that you needed it – to own the crown that was already yours, bestowing it upon all the “cracked, peelin’” queers who are “riddled with

disease.” Haters gon’ hate, but as Hadreas warns: “No family is safe when I sashay.” “The Fight,” Sia

Don’t even bother trying to stand in Sia’s way. The Aussie is one of the world’s most soughtafter songwriters, but even before she was swinging from her chandelier, Sia was bigger than life itself on this cartoony romp – and that’s exactly how she makes you feel too. “Take Me to Church,” Sinead O’Connor

Nothing compares to you. No, really – you’re the best. “Set me on the floor; I’m the only one I should adore,” the Irish icon declares, waxing poetic about finding love in a place where it’s sometimes seemingly impossible – from within. “Raise You Up / Just Be,” Kinky Boots

In case your kinky boots aren’t enough to get you off the ground, this Cyndi Lauperpenned number from the hit Broadway show will. The show closer is a sparkly, ensemblesung, feel-good romp that won’t just add pep to your step, but at least three inches to your height. GayVegas.com

GAY VEGAS SOUNDTRACK

BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI

Best of 2015 so far Shamir, Ratchet

The latest wave of gender-defying youth just got wavier with Shamir, a 20-year-old cutiepatootie from Vegas who’s tearing down rigid archetypes by way of gender ambiguity and a brazen “no fucks to give” attitude. You can read it – “it” being his convention-confronting manifesto – on his Twitter feed, and you can hear it in the spunky nu-disco dreaminess of his criminally catchy throwback debut. “On the Regular” strides with drag-queen fierceness (and cowbells!), boasting a swaggering rap about how, despite his size (“5-foot-10, about a buck twenty / Skinny as a rod but still won’t fuck with me”), he packs a powerful punch. And that’s no joke (for further proof, hear the sweetly flowing “Demon”). On the whole, Shamir’s Ratchet is a potent boundary buster with some of the year’s best, most neon-bright beats.

Madonna, Rebel Heart

Major misfires – oh, religion and sex meet again? (Is she really 24 Gay Vegas Magazine

sampling herself?) – kept it from breaking into the Essential Madonna Echelon, but these days, when it comes to Our Girl, you take what you can get and just hope and pray it’s not another MDNA. We made it out of the wilderness, then, didn’t we? Rebel Heart is not another MDNA; rather, and thankfully, it’s the sonic equivalent of Madonna picking herself back up after that Brit Awards fall. She stumbles a bit here, but the difference? Those mishaps are quelled by some of Madge’s most innovative, trend-bucking cuts in years. “Living for Love” rouses with “Like a Prayer” realness, “Ghosttown” works itself into a welcome moment of tenderness, and the title track is more in touch with Madonna than Madonna’s been in years.

Kendrick Lamar, To Pimp a Butterfly

Even T. Swift has a thing for Kendrick Lamar, the urban innovator featured on the pop star’s No. 1 “Bad Blood” radio remix. If you, too, have lost yourself in his thought-provoking brilliance,

you understand what Taylor sees in him. The musician du jour’s To Pimp a Butterfly sits impressively outside the box, the accumulation of various genres – spoken word, hip-hop, jazz, funk, etc. – to create a cultural touchstone that grapples with heavy of-the-zeitgeist matters. Big moments abound, but it doesn’t get more ambitious than “Mortal Men,” a moving 12-minute, posthumous conversation he has with Tupac.

Susanne Sundfør, Ten Love Songs

Do you know Susanne Sundfør? You don’t? You should. The ultratalented Norwegian songstress’ sixth release is a captivating caper through and through, reveling in brokenhearted synth-pop and orchestral detours that conjure cinematic magic. An ethereal 10-minute behemoth, “Memorial” takes a drum-slapped torch song and caps it with a stunning orchestra outro, a wistful wind-down that lingers even after its last haunting note. Her pop sensibility is equally as sharp on the soulful “Fade Away,” an enveloping synth song, and on “Slowly,” an evocative, pure gold, ’80s-shimmered wallop produced by fellow Norwegian duo Röyksopp. And just when you think Sundfør’s achieved Robyn-caliber pop genius, there’s the biting “Delirious,” which builds into a crushingly brilliant beat after a John Carpenter’s Halloween-esque preface. It’s one genius move among many on Ten Love Songs. 25 Gay Vegas Magazine

Marina and the Diamonds, FROOT

After record execs tried to turn her into Pop’s Next Big Thing – a position, she later confessed, wasn’t for her – Welsh singer-songwriter Marina and the Diamonds gets back to basics on FROOT. Awash in the left-of-center sound that launched her career, FROOT feels like an artistic manifestation rather than a business fulfillment. Both musically personal and powerful, it begins with a paean of self-expression that suggests a newfound professional freedom. “I sang a hymn to bring me peace / And then it came, a melody,” she sings on “Happy,” boldly easing into the album with this raw moment of piano-led minimalism. On FROOT, it only gets sweeter.

Sufjan Stevens, Carrie & Lowell

“You’ll never see us again.” And just like that, Sufjan Steven rips your heart open with his seventh studio album, a gut-punch of grief-stricken emotions inspired by his mother’s passing. One such blow is “Fourth of July,” the kind of personal experience – a play-by-play of a parent’s final

GAY VEGAS SOUNDTRACK moments – rarely set to song. And for all its harsh truths, what a beautiful lullaby-like tune it is. That graceful appeal extends throughout Sufjan’s wrenchingly stunning tribute to his mother, Carrie & Lowell. The lulling melodies leave their mark. Sentiments drawn vividly from the past are stark and real and relatable. But there’s light in the dark, and by the time he gets to the penultimate “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross,” you’ll want to give Sufjan the biggest hug. You’ll also need one of your own.

Belle and Sebastian, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance

Girls in peacetime want to dance… and, apparently, so does Belle and Sebastian. “Jump to the beat of the party line,” they urge. And we do, of course. On yet another solid release from the alwaysdependable Glaswegian sextet, they’re more “weeee” than twee. Producer Ben H. Allen shimmers their sound while still maintaining the band’s trademark melancholy and hopefulness. Escapist vibes run throughout “Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance,” as frontman Stuart Murdoch finally addresses their album’s motive on Belle’s most quintessential track, “Ever Had a Little Faith?,” a jangly little daydream: Basically, don’t be sad. And, you know, dance.

Summer Songs For Your

Poolside Playlist

GayVegas.com

27

GAY VEGAS SOUNDTRACK Slip on your swimsuit, break out the blender and pump up the jams. Today you’re kickin’ it poolside with a freshly selected and eclectic playlist that screams fun in the sun.

1. ‘Summertime,’ DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

There’s not a chance in hell you’ll make it to Labor Day without this warm-weather classic infiltrating your ears. That goes double if you run in hipster circles where early-’90s nostalgia is all the rage. (You can thank BuzzFeed for that.)

2. ‘Amber,’ 311

Laid back with reggae roots, this turn-ofthe-century love note to Nicole Scherzinger remains 311’s most popular song, despite it never cracking the Top 10.

3. ‘Fly,’ Sugar Ray

Thai. But that’s OK – because it’s the beat that’ll have you like, ‘Where the beach party at?’

6. ‘Good People,’ Jack Johnson

J.J. asks, “Where’d all the good people go?” Put your phone down and reacquaint yourself with a few that are near you.

7. ‘Summer of ’69,’ Bryan Adams

You may not remember it – for one of many reasons – but the summer of ’69 had a lion’s share of awesomeness. From the moon landing to Woodstock – and this quintessential summer song that captures the innocence of American adolescence – it’s no wonder why Adams belted out that this was “the best day of my life.”

8. ‘One Love,’ Lucky Dube

Life would be so much sweeter if we lived in a world according to Lucky Dube.

Remember the time that Mark McGrath’s SoCal surfer-meetsrockstar style made your loins quiver. That’s a statement, not a question.

9. ‘Life in the Fast Lane,’ Eagles

4. ‘Summer Girls,’ Lyte Funkie Ones

10. ‘Lovely Day,’ Bill Withers

The song is nonsensical and juvenile – but that’s precisely what made it so popular the summer of ’99. You’re welcome, Abercrombie & Fitch.

5. ‘Jamiacan Betel Nut,’ Amit

Aside from the hook (an encouraging “Get up! Stand up!”) and a reference to Bob Marley, the lyrics to this genre-bending T-Pop song are in 28 Gay Vegas Magazine

Enjoy the summer at a slower pace? Nah – that’s what winter is for. If you’re by the pool with your besties, it is.

11. ‘Kokomo,’ Beach Boys

You didn’t think I’d create a sunshine-y playlist without the Beach Boys, did you? While “Kokomo” and its promises of “bodies in the sand, tropical drink melting in your hand” top our list of BB faves, close runners up include “Good Vibrations,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” and (the likely relatable) “I Get Around.”

12. ‘Shut Up and Dance,’ Walk the Moon

Do what they say and nobody gets hurts.

13. ‘Can’t Deny My Love,’ Brandon Flowers

Admittedly there’s somewhat of a stalkerish vibe to this ’80s-tinged lead single from Flowers’ second studio album, but we’ve all been there. Especially when you’re crushin’ on that lifeguard who’s sun-kissed and dripping wet.

14. ‘My Type,’ Saint Motel

Let me guess, your type is the one over there with the beach-blond hair and abs that ripple like steam from a sidewalk. Full of surprises, aren’t ya?

15. ‘Trap Queen,’ Fetty Wap

Crank it up in the grotto. You won’t regret it.

16. ‘Bad Blood,’ Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar

Did you really think you’d get through this summer without a T. Swift banger on repeat? Don’t resist this remix; submit to the overlords.

17. ‘Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,’ Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Make this your motto – stat! Enjoy… your… life… more.

18. ‘This Summer’s Gonna Hurt,’ Maroon 5

Skip the track and cue up the Vevo instead.

Adam Levine’s naked bum makes summer days brighter.

19. ‘On the Regular,’ Shamir

If I had to choose just one song on this list, this would be it – hands down. Energetic, upbeat, sassy and fun, Shamir’s “On the Regular” puts your iPod on lock. Besides, anybody who describes himself as a “musician, comedian, singer, rapper, twerker, chef, writer, filmmaker, tumblr, skinny fat ass” is A-OK in my book.

20. ‘The Boys of Summer,’ Don Henley

Government-mandated listening when the mercury is above 90.

21. ‘Fancy,’ Iggy Azalea

Say what you will about Iggy – just don’t pretend this song doesn’t make you all swishy, gurl.

22. ‘Run,’ Coin

For that extra pep you’ll need to complete the canyon before you can get your dip on.

23. ‘Girls/Girls/Boys,’ Panic! At the Disco

Because a bare-chested Brendon Urie is what dope summers are made of.

24. ‘Until We Can’t Go (Let’s Go),’ Passion Pit Wait for it… wait for it… Ah, there we go.

25. ‘And We Danced,’ Macklemore feat. Ziggy Stardust

For that end-of-the-night pants off dance-off. It’s been a loooong day. GayVegas.com

FEATURED CELEBRITY

INTERVIEW DONE BY JOHN LAWRENCE, ARTICLE WRITTEN BY DANIELA COSTA

The Gods must be smiling upon Vegas, because Mariah Carey, diva extraordinaire, has taken up residency at Caesars Palace. A singer, songwriter, actress, and top mom, it seems there’s nothing Mariah can’t do. The biggest-selling female act of all time, Mariah has had 18 hits go No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s the most for any solo artist ever – male or female. All 18 songs can be found on her new greatest-hits album, #1 To Infinity. As a hello to her new neighbors, Mariah took the time to chat with Gay Vegas and answer fan questions. 30 Gay Vegas Magazine

Music careers come and go quite quickly. What do you attribute your longstanding career to? I think one really has to love music wholeheartedly to sustain a lengthy career in this business. Otherwise, people see through it and it’s too transparent. For me it’s not about reinvention. It’s about making musical choices that make me happy and fulfilled. Have you seen any of the many drag queens that dress up and perform as you? If so, what advice would you give to drag queens who want to recreate your style? I am amazed by the creativity of some of these performers – it is extremely flattering and highly

entertaining. I would focus on incorporating your own unique style and always remember to weeeerrrk dahhlinggggg! Who are some of the most memorable TLGB people that have helped you throughout your career? You know, it wouldn’t be fair to name a few and not name them all. There’s too many to name! There have been so many wonderful TLGB people who have helped me throughout my career and I am so thankful for all of them. Do you think it’s important that celebrities like yourself speak out in support of the TLGB community? Yes, absolutely! I am a huge supporter of the TLGB community. I think it’s important to bring to light any issues that prevent equality and justice. I try to get involved whenever possible. I recently performed at the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles 2015 Gala Dinner and Auction in March. You have a new show at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace called #1 To Infinity. There was a lot of commotion when the news hit that you had cancelled one night of your show at Caesars due to bronchitis. Celine Dion, your predecessor at the Colosseum, had cancelled some of her performances and had issues with what has been called “Vegas throat” due to our dry climate. In a time where many artists are lip-syncing their way through performances you have stayed true and choose to sing live for your fans. What are some things that you do to keep your health and prepare your voice for performances? I try to get as much sleep as possible. I have at least 10 humidifiers surrounding my bed and whenever possible,

I try not to talk on my days off. In Rome, the Colosseum was used for gladiator contests. Who would you love to see compete for your approval in a modern day Roman Empire? Oh wow! I would have to say Jeff, Tyson, and Jussie who were in my “Infinity” music video. We had so much fun filming the video and just the thought of them dressed as gladiators is already entertaining. I have an image of you imprinted in my mind from a concert here in Vegas where you were dressed in a sexy gold boxing outfit getting ready to knock someone out as part of your performance. Do you have some of those fun theatrical elements in your new Vegas show? I do incorporate those elements in my show. We are always keeping things different from what we have done in the past and focus on implementing new ideas. I don’t want to spoil the show for your readers, so they will just have to come and see! On one of your days off from your Vegas show you attended the Chippendales show at the Rio where you were given a lap dance by Tyson Beckford (Zoolander). Have you had any other “Vegas-like” experiences since you started calling Vegas your home? Well, I’ll always be a New Yorker at heart, but being in Vegas is quite fun. Especially because the kids can play outside and go to the pool where we are in Vegas. It’s hard for me to do too much, I have to look out for my voice. I do enjoy being in Vegas though. I really like a lot of the local people I’ve met since being here! GayVegas.com 31

FEATURED CELEBRITY If you were to gamble, are you more likely to play the slot machines or table games? Table games. You performed your hit single “Infinity” at Disneyland recently. What are some of your favorite attractions at the theme park? I love the Tower of Terror. It’s one of my favorite places in the world! I may hold the record for most rides ever taken on the TOT! Speaking of Disney, you are the proud mother of two beautiful children. What’s the last Disney movie that’s been on repeat in your home? That’s so sweet! You know, the kids love Big Hero 6! You were amazing in the films Precious and The Butler. Any urge to return to the big screen any time soon? I would love to! I love acting. It’s a totally different way for me to express my creativity. You mentioned performing at the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Gala. Could you see yourself performing a song or two at a Pride event like Vegas Pride? I’m sure anything could happen with the right timing. What would you like to say to your TLGB fans? Thank you for all your support and love throughout the years!

Questions from Readers & Fans:

A Gay Vegas text subscriber asks, “How is Caesars Palace treating you so far?” I love the staff at Caesars. They have been very accommodating and they’re all very nice! Even though I don’t get to spend a lot of time with them, they do give off a very nice vibe. 32 Gay Vegas Magazine

Rodney Fleming asks, “Have you done any local things yet, like Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston, Red Rock?” I haven’t had the chance to explore those parts of Vegas. One thing we did really enjoy was seeing the dolphins at the Mirage! Deric Williams aka Valerie Soleil asks, “When can we expect an all new album? What are you writing about currently?” I haven’t started writing my all new album yet. Currently I’m absorbed in making my show, #1 to Infinity, the most fun for my fans as possible. Kenny King asks, “There are several songs in your #1 To Infinity show that you never sing in regular live shows (“Love Takes Time”, “I Don’t Wanna Cry”, “Someday”). Is there any particular one you might add to the lineup now that you have heard the audience’s reaction during your residency?” Maybe now that I’ve gotten used to singing them again I might add them. Antonio Estrada asks, “Being part of a generation of singers who actually have real talent and powerful voices, how do you see the music industry today? Who would you say is most likely, if anyone, to be the next Whitney Houston? Or maybe even the next Mariah?” Everybody should be their own person. The music industry today is a very difficult place to have a long lasting career. Especially if you are trying to be a carbon copy of someone else. The best advice I can give is to work as hard as you can, try not to alienate people, and love what you do!

R E M SUM STYLE SHEET:

Beach-Ready Accessories That Make a Splash Just because summer is cause to shed the confines of clothing to celebrate the skin you’re in, reality is, we can’t go commando everywhere. For those times that you legally have to cover your bits, here are our picks for summer essentials to keep you looking fly and having fun.

Shark-Print Swimming Trunks

Like the Republican and Democratic parties, it seems that America is equally divided between two swimwear categories: bulky board shorts or barely-there Speedo-style suits. If you prefer to stay somewhere in the middle, Maui & Sons’ Shark trunks let you show a little leg while leaving the size and shape of your little swimmer to your admirers’ imaginations. pacsun.com

Polarized Bold-Color Frames

It’s a crime against fashion to step into those harmful UV rays without a posh pair of polarized glasses, but the Westbrook New York Shades in blue can help keep the style citations at bay. Designed by NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook, these funky, chunky wayfarer frames are made from durable acetate and feature five-

barrel hinges built to handle summertime wear and tear. jackthreads.com

3-in-1 Beach Game Set

So what if you weren’t invited to play volleyball with Chip and all his glistening, bare-chested country-club cronies. Make your own fun with three-in-one game sets that offer hours of friendly competition. The Sportcraft combo pack features quick-andeasy setup of ladder ball, washer toss and beanbag toss games, all housed in one convenient carrying case. (Besides, you know one of ’em is at least bi, so you’re not completely out for the count.) kmart.com

Old Skool Flamingo Sneakers

Rock out with your flock out in the flamingoprint Old Skool sneaks from Vans, inspired by a reissued print from the shoemaker’s archives. Constructed in the Van Doren style, these kicks feature a low-top laceup with a suede upper, padded tongue and lining, metal eyelets and Vans original Waffle Outsole. Something flamboyant this way comes. vans.com

Neon Throwback Shorts

If all this talk about “dad bod” lately has you feeling several sorts of nostalgic, take GayVegas.com

34

a trip back in time with the Rooster Tails from Chubbies, rainbow-patterned shorts reminiscent of your pa’s sky’s-out-thighs-out weekend wear. Made of everybody’s favorite ’80s fabric – nylon – these fresh vestiges of what once was makes showin’ off your feet trophies all the more dad-tastic. chubbies. com

Mini Bluetooth Speaker

You’ll want to pump up the jams on that prime piece of real estate you’ve nabbed on the sand – if only to drown out the sound of all those “pretty girls” – and the iBT72 expandable Bluetooth mini speaker from iHome helps you make that beat drop. This compact, accordion-style sound box has two audio sources: wireless streaming from your mobile device or direct line-in via the included cable and any device with a headphone jack. ihome.com

Tropic Time Snapback Hats

You don’t have to be a sports fan (though it doesn’t hurt) to appreciate the Tropic Time snapback hats from New Era – full-cap and bill-only floral prints available in MLB and NBA teams. Pick from your favorites or choose one that gels well with your summer style, like the Miami Marlins 9FIFTY cap that’s inherently breezy. newera. com

Blue Pine Watch

Watches aren’t worn for practical purposes any more – nowadays we’re all conditioned to check our pockets for the time – but a whimsical hand clock can add that extra _umph_ your outfit might need. Take Swatch’s Blue Pine wristwatch, for instance. It’s like looking out from your private cabana in Fiji, wishing that time would stop altogether (and never start again), making it an ideal conversation piece at a seaside dinner with the new friends you’ve made on vacay. swatch.com

Embroidered Hula and Palms Oxford

Alas, you can’t wear flip-flops and tank tops everywhere you go from May to September, so it’s best to keep some fancier duds in your duffel. Class up the joint while staying summer-festive in the slim lightweight oxford with embroidered hula and palms from J. Crew, which is easily dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Dapper buttondowns also are available in embroidered anchors and woven pelicans. jcrew.com

Hemp Duffel Bag

Speaking of duffels, you’ll need to conveniently carry all your summer style essentials (and souvenirs!), and the Natural Hemp Novel Duffel from Herschel Supply Co. is both lightweight and heavy duty simultaneously. The natural hemp fabric construction is contrasted by chambray details and features a cotton chambray liner with silver pin detailing. Herschel’s signature shoe pocket also is built in – because it already knows and loves you. herschelsupply.com GayVegas.com

CHEERS TO SUMMER 2015: PARTY-STARTIN’ DRINK RECIPES TO SIP IN THE SUN Another hot-and-sweaty season is upon us – and it’s time to throw back a few cold ones. From pick-me-up coffee concoctions to a cocktail that’ll tickle your pickle, these are the must-make recipes of summer 2015.

2. Rise & Shine Coffee Cocktail

When you need more than a mimosa to get you back in the game after a long night of pride partying, opt for this easyto-prepare energy bev crafted from liquid coffee concentrate, handcrafted at Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen in Winter Park, Fla.

1. The Amethyst

Summer-staple sangria takes the backseat when you break out Black Box Pinot Noir to serve as the base of this fun-and-fruity cocktail. Chilled red wine meets citrus and sparkling wine for a fizzy-fresh drink with zip, designed by Cocktail Guru Jonathan Pogash. 1 1/2 oz Black Box Pinot Noir 3/4 oz crème de cassis 1/2 oz honey syrup 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice Sparkling wine Strawberry slice, garnish

Shake all ingredients (except for sparkling wine) with ice and strain into a chilled champagne flute. Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with strawberry slice on rim of glass.

1 oz Fernet 3/4 oz Amaro 3/4 oz Grand Marnier 1/2 oz simple syrup 1 Barnie’s Blend BREWSTICKS

Mix ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour and serve in a rocks glass. Garnish with orange twist.

3. Ancho Berry Margarita

All bets are off when the blender comes out – hello, margies! – but it’s easy to go green this summer with this made-by-hand margaritaon-the-rocks recipe born at the Living Room Bar and Fireplace at the Inn & Spa at Loretto in Sante Fe, N.M. 1 1/2 oz. Roca Patron Silver Tequila 1/2 oz Cointreau

in half, remove seeds and whisk in a bowl with 1/2 cup of sugar.

5. Del Frisco’s Grille Dutch Mule 1/2 oz fresh lime juice Macerated Blueberries: 6 oz Ancho Reyes Chile Liquor Tbsp sugar 1 pint fresh blueberries

Rim martini glass with raspberry chipotle sea salt and serve.

4. Cherry Blossom Sour

If you missed the iconic Cherry Blossom blooms in the nation’s capital this spring, have a taste of the next best thing from the AC Hotel Washington D.C. in Maryland (eh, it’s close enough), which boasts a beverage-first culture that we all can agree is pretty boss. 1 1/2 oz Sloop Betty Vodka 1/4 oz St. Germain 1/4 oz simple syrup 1/4 oz cherry brandy 1/4 oz Oloroso sherry 1 oz lemon juice 1 mint sprig, garnish

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake 10 to 20 times. Doublestrain into a cocktail glass and garnish with mint sprig. For added flavor, rim glass with vanilla sugar. To make, split one vanilla bean

Spicy, sweet and a little bit sour, this recipe courtesy of Del Frisco’s Grille is just what the doctor ordered when you want something a bit more sophisticated than a so-last-year shandy. 1/2 oz Nolet’s Gin 4 1/2 oz ginger beer Red grapefruit slices, garnish Mint sprigs, garnish

Fill wine glass 3/4 full with ice. Add gin and ginger beer. Place grapefruit slice in glass and top with mint sprig.

6. Ink Bomb

Arguably the most innovative cocktail on this list, this squid-ink shot from Death Ave. in NYC isn’t for the weak of stomach. Cocktail enthusiasts can harvest their own ink by cleaning store-bought cuttlefish at home. 1 oz Tsipouro grape pomace brandy 1/4 tsp cuttlefish ink Splash of sour mix 1 tsp fresh lime juice

Serve with grilled seafood.

7. Senor Scott

Hot, sweet and salty simultaneously, this sparkling collins cocktail – created by Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada – is the perfect pairing for an outdoor summer meal GayVegas.com

and bubbling with antioxidants! derived south of the border. 2 oz quality silver tequila 1 oz. Aperol Blood Orange DRY Slice of lime Paper thin strip of bell pepper Cinnamon salt

Rim half a collins glass with lime and cinnamon salt and fill halfway with ice. Add tequila and Aperol and stir. Top with Blood Orange DRY and stir again. Garnish with red bell pepper and slice of lime.

8. You Look Smashing

Spyglass Rooftop Bar sits 22 stories atop Archer Hotel, serving small bites and crafted cocktails with unparalleled views of the Empire State Building and the New York City skyline. You’ll already look smashing up there, but this cocktail in hand won’t hurt either. 2 oz Eagle Rare Bourbon 6 blackberries 3 mint leaves 1 lemon wedge 1/4 oz maple syrup

Serve in rocks glass.

9. Basil POM Bomb

No need to feel guilty for indulging in a few of these crisp cocktails from POM Wonderful

1 1/2 oz Bombay Sapphire gin 1 1/2 oz POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice 1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice 3/4 oz agave 3 basil leaves, muddled Top with Perrier or other sparkling water Sliver of lime, garnish Pomegranate seeds, garnish

Serve in short glass or wine glass.

10. Tickled Pickle

Caution: May cause cravings for hoagies and chips. 2 oz VDKA 6100 3/4 oz lemon juice 3/4 oz simple syrup 1 oz sour pickle brine 1 oz Australian lager beer

Combine all ingredients (except beer) in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a tumbler glass. Top with a heavy splash of lager beer. Stir gently, garnish with skewered mini pickles and dust with cayenne pepper. GayVegas.com

Trans Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner has been in the public’s eye since becoming a gold medal winner in the 1976 Olympics – then as Bruce. Decades later she would go on to gain a whole new fanbase as a member of the Kardashian clan. Now after revealing she identifies as female, Jenner has become the talk of the nation. In light of Jenner recently completing her gender transition and coming out publicly with her story, we asked a trans member of our local Las Vegas TLGB community to share her thoughts. What follows below is a letter from Sasha Rochelle Ogata.

“Hey faggot!” “You’re not a girl!” “You’re a sissy boy!” That is what was said to me almost everyday while I was growing up back in the ‘80s. I think it’s wonderful that Caitlyn Jenner is getting all this support from social media, celebrities, and her family. This is not the norm for most transgender people. As a transgender woman, I was always perceived as gay, called a faggot, homo, and other very mean terms, this from strangers, friends, and also family members.

As a transgender woman it is hard to find a job, housing, and medical care. Caitlyn Jenner is white, famous, and a millionaire. She’s able to get the best doctors and psychiatrists, and has people around her to help her. “Normal” transgender people do not have this kind of support around them, nor do they have the resources to accomplish what she has done in the last few years. With some trans people it could take years. I think it’s great that Caitlyn is opening up

the public’s eye to the transgender identity, but she needs to be more realistic about the situation for the majority of trans people – we are not rich. We are not famous.

years and then all of a sudden, in just the last few months, now she’s a woman. I DON’T THINK SO! She hasn’t lived one straight year as a transgender woman.

Also, for a trans woman, she still has the mannerisms of a man. She needs to sit more like a lady. I’ve noticed in some of her photos she still sits like Bruce. Maybe she needs some female etiquette classes, or to hang out with real transgender women and live her life as a transgender woman.

I’m happy for her and the choices she is finally making for her life, but this is not the norm for most transgender people.

She has been living as a man for all these

NATIONAL NEWS

BY JOHN LAWRENCE

In the Face of Adversity

LOVE WINS

It was a morning I will never forget and one of the most significant moments in TLGB history. Many said it would never come in their lifetime, but on Friday, June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Not having equal rights can take a huge toll on a community or individual, from mental health problems to poor behavioral patterns, the path to healing the ailments left by a history 44 Gay Vegas Magazine

of discrimination is a very long journey. To this day, we still see the after effects of once enforced laws that have allowed discrimination on the basis of gender, race, and class – most that have been long since removed. Finally, gay and lesbian couples have no lesser rights in regards to love. In all 50 states anyone may marry the person that he or she loves. At 5:30 p.m. on June 26, 2015, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (The Center) held a decision day rally that brought a large

group of TLGB community members together to celebrate this historic moment. The community cheered, danced, and celebrated as a group. The Center was filled with families and friends, non-profit organizations and community leaders who gathered in celebration of marriage equality. Since the ruling, I have seen some very disturbing posts on social media from people who do not support it. Many religious individuals have posted that marriage should be exclusively between a man and a woman. It is unfortunate that we insist on putting each other in categories instead of seeing each individual as a human being. Love has no boundaries. As a child I remember discovering my sexuality and crying to God, “Why did you do this to me?” There was nobody that I felt safe discussing my feelings with. I knew my family’s stance on homosexuality and feared the consequences. I continued to live with these feelings bottled up inside through junior high and high school. It was a secret that would eat away at my soul. Over the years I would become involved in various Christian-based religions to try and cure myself of my homosexuality. My high school friend Nichole Nalder even had an entire church try and save me with prayer, placing their hands over my body in worship. I would get in touch with the Mormon church in my community in hopes that they could “cure me” of what I thought could be cured.

I would eventually come out to my family and was put through various attempts to “fix” me. I have had holy water doused on my body, been sent to psychiatrists, and was eventually disowned. The mental effects of these experiences brought me to some of the lowest points in my life, where I hurt myself and even attempted suicide. Life is the ultimate classroom, and our teachers have yet to define all the answers. Despite my difficulty in dealing with my sexual orientation, I now live my life in happiness and bliss. I have learned to fully love and accept myself and now my entire family has a new relationship with God, allowing them to fully accept me and my partner of five years. Please know that even when things look impossible, there is still hope. Never give up. Being gay is not easy. It is not a choice. It is not “curable.” It is part of what makes every gay person a person. Even with marriage equality, being gay is still a difficult journey, due largely in part to those who decide to judge you based on their religion and make the choice to limit you from participating in those beliefs because of something you cannot change. I hope sharing my experiences can open up some minds to understanding that being gay is not a choice, and that being able to marry the one you love, regardless of gender, should not be anyone else’s choice to make.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

BY ORIOL R. GUTIERREZ JR.

PASSING THE TEST

Getting tested for HIV nowadays is a snap. In the era of over-the-counter rapid in-home testing, I’m befuddled why so many gay men, especially young guys, lack awareness of their HIV status.

myself. Procrastination isn’t a good reason. Being fine with getting tested in theory but delaying doing so in practice is only asking for trouble.

I suppose part of the answer, at least for young guys, is plain old feelings of invincibility. All young and young-minded folks share in those feelings.

Knowing your HIV status is crucial. If you test negative, you have incentive to stay that way. If you test positive, you can start the process of staying healthy. Better to know now than to be blindsided later.

Perhaps, for some guys, not knowing gives them license to say they’re HIV negative, since for all they know they are. For others, perhaps not knowing insulates them from any potential pain of a positive result.

Although I’ve been living with HIV for more than two decades, I still remember what it’s like to get tested for the virus. The fear is understandable, but it shouldn’t stop you. Your health is paramount.

I could keep that list going, but the point is that countless reasons exist for not knowing. Many of those reasons may even seem reasonable. Well, I’m here to tell you that no reason you can come up with is a good one. Maybe you’re just a procrastinator. No matter. I’m a world-class procrastinator

I passed my first HIV test with flying colors: Negative. At the time, I had just turned 21 and boy was I psyched. I was cleared for duty, so to speak, as well as legal to drink. Watch out world, here I come.

48 Gay Vegas Magazine

However, I was more careful this time around.

Before that test, I hadn’t always adhered to the condom rule, although I knew the risks. Now that I was given this reprieve, I was determined not to squander it. A year later, I failed my second HIV test: Positive. I found out the day after my 22nd birthday. My commanding officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve read my diagnosis from a script. Cold, but tactful. I knew the positive result was correct, but denial took over. I retested twice before accepting the reality of my situation. At that moment, I started believing that I was going to die before I turned 30. It was 1992. Effective HIV treatment wouldn’t arrive until 1996 and AIDS-related deaths were still increasing. The death of my boyfriend in 1994 only increased my fear that I wouldn’t live much longer. Fast-forward over two decades. Turns out I’m still here and I plan on being here for a long time. Failing that HIV test wasn’t the end of the world, but I must admit that I still wish that I had passed it. I’ve learned to live with HIV in my body, but the virus remains an unwelcome guest. If the cure for HIV was here tomorrow, I would quickly get in line. I have no romantic attachment to the virus. I also have no attachment to any resentment about getting HIV. Despite my late boyfriend not telling me the truth about his being HIV positive, I agreed not to use condoms with him. We both shared in that decision.

I’m not alone. Much of why the epidemic continues can be explained by folks not knowing their status and transmitting HIV unintentionally, but also by couples who ditch condoms before they know for sure each is negative. You could argue that my late boyfriend had a moral imperative to disclose his HIV status that was higher than my moral imperative to protect myself. Perhaps you could even be right. However, even after all this time, I still haven’t decided. What I have decided, now having lived more than half of my life with HIV, is that I did the right thing for myself by forgiving him. I believe he never intended to transmit HIV, so forgiving him wasn’t too difficult for me. The anger I felt toward him in the first few years after I seroconverted was soon trumped by the experience of now being in his shoes. Not pretty. Rejection was everywhere. The stigma was stifling. I now understood. And I still understand. Little has changed when it comes to HIV stigma. Not only has the virus proven resistant to a cure, it also has resisted decades of attempts to eradicate the stigma surrounding it. Strangely enough, I believe testing regularly for HIV would do wonders in stomping out stigma. If everyone did it, and did it often, folks would finally start feeling like it’s not so scary. Peer pressure at its best. GayVegas.com
