Queer Las Vegas student wins prestigious writing award Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (LVA) student Ariana Smith has just become a gold recipient of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, one of the country’s longest-running scholarship recognition programs.

country in winning the prestigious award, which comes with a $10,000 scholarship and a weeklong celebration in New York City that will be capped with an event at Carnegie Hall on June 6.

Smith, who is the daughter of an African-American father and Filipina mother, is a senior at LVA. Her experience as a queer woman with a mixed ethnic background ultimately influenced her now awardwinning work.

For context, past recipients of the award include the likes of Truman Capote, Stephen King, and Sylvia Plath.

“Your identity is all of you, not just some parts,” she told the Las Vegas Sun. “I feel like making space being both black and queer … it’s a complicated dynamic.” Smith joins 15 other high school students across the

Smith, for whom poetry is activism, writes about the violence that queer and trans people of color are subject to. “Black queer people are killed all over the world,” she said. “Their victimhood is not portrayed. People don’t see justice.” That invisibility, says Smith,

often persists even in traditionally queer spaces. Writes the Las Vegas Sun: LGBT spaces, she said, are often white-centric, even though LGBT Pride is built off “black people and black trans women.” She said black culture and tradition can also be limiting for queer identities. “I like to use art as a form of activism and art as a form of protest,” she said, adding that in today’s political climate, “art serves as a radical act.” Smith is the vice president of the Black Student Union at LVA. After high school, she plans on studying film and social justice. Her award-winning poem is titled “Sisterhood.” FabLasVegas.com

LGBTQ+ VEGAS

By: Dee Oliveira

-----------------------------------------------------------------------Toni Witten is the security and facilities manager for The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (The Center) and also serves on the LVMPD’s Multicultural Advisory Council. She spoke with the ReviewJournal about the study’s findings. “The police department, in my experience and from conversations with the sheriff and undersheriff, is more than willing to come to the table,” said Witten. “Some of

Study finds LVMPD lacks transgender policies A recent study has revealed that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) lacks transgender policies. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, a transgender activist organization, Las Vegas police are not held to explicit policies that protect the rights of transgender people. Writes the Las Vegas Review-Journal: Las Vegas police do not have a written policy that explicitly prohibits officers from using derogatory language and invasive questions toward transgender people.

Metro’s department manual also fails to mention individuals with non-binary gender identities, including how in-custody search or lockup policies apply to them, according to the study. The LVMPD was just one of 25 police departments that the study analyzed. “It found that none of the departments explicitly require regular training on transgender interaction,” reports the Review-Journal. Of the study’s 17 categories, the LVMPD only ranked “good” in one (nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation). By contrast, it was considered “poor” in most of the remaining categories.

the effort has to come from the transgender community itself.” “[The police] recognize that relations between the transgender community and law enforcement have been strained over the years,” she explained. “Metro approached (The Center) to help create a dialogue.” Furthermore, Witten says that during the last phase of field training for new officers, they hear from different members of the Las Vegas community, including LGBT individuals. What’s more, The Center works with the police to hold sensitivity training sessions and question-andanswer events. “The seeds are planted and they are making progress.”

Showcasing new acts and talent, each year’s Ribbon of Life audience is always surprised, thrilled and inspired by performances that are exclusive to the event. We are pleased to announce that we will be returning to The Legends in Concert Theater at The Tropicana Las Vegas on June 23rd at 1pm. This year’s production “The

Ribbon of Life’s Summer of Love - Celebrating Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary” will focus on the artists, music and era of the magical summer that brought us Woodstock. The production promises to be awe-inspiring with over 1,000 patrons attending and tickets sure to sell out! This popular event is the primary source of funding for many of our programs and remains one of the largest and most unique shows of its kind in Nevada. The Ribbon of Life Silent Auction will be back again this year featuring many exciting Las Vegas show tickets and travel packages along with special items donated by various local

merchants. There will also be a special Ribbon of Life after party immediately following the show in The Havana Room at The Tropicana. This party provides attendees the opportunity to mix and mingle with all of the show performers and to see additional acts and performances. Attendance is free to select VIP level Ribbon of Life ticket purchasers, however there are a limited number of tickets available to general audience ticket holders and the general public for an additional charge. Come, enjoy the show while supporting our important mission! FabLasVegas.com

Celebrate PRIDE

at the Clark County Library

Sunday, June 16 Stonewall: A Look Back in Film As the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots approach, we look back to the event that is widely considered to be the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement.

12 p.m. “Screaming Queens: The Riot at

Compton’s Cafeteria” (2005, 57 min, NR) Three years before the famous riots at New York’s Stonewall Inn, there was the little-known first act of collective, violent resistance to the social oppression of LGBTQ+ people in the United States in San Francisco’s impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood.

“After Stonewall” (1999, 86 min, NR) From the riots at Stonewall to the end of the century, “After Stonewall” chronicles the history of lesbian and gay life in America. This sequel, narrated by Melissa Etheridge, captures the hard work, struggles, tragic defeats, and exciting victories experienced during this time. It also explores how AIDS dramatically changed the direction of the movement.

1 p.m.

4 p.m.

“Before Stonewall” (1984, 87 min, NR) A groundbreaking look at the birth of the LGBTQ+ movement, this award-winning documentary follows the history of the gay experience in America, from the social experimentation of the 1920s to McCarthy-era scapegoats to the beginning of the gay rights crusade.

2:30 p.m.

“The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” (2017, 105 min, TV-MA) Victoria Cruz investigates the mysterious 1992 death of black gay rights activist and Stonewall veteran Marsha P. Johnson, using archival interviews with Johnson, and new interviews with Johnson’s family, friends and fellow activists.

Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. Colors of the Rainbow: Las Vegas Men’s Chorus in Concert Whether you’re a Broadway baby, a serious music aficionado, or somewhere in the middle, you’ll find something to please your ears when the Las Vegas Men’s Chorus takes the stage.

Clark County Library Main Theater 1401 E. Flamingo Rd.
