ZILVERMUSEUM STERCKSHOF
UMICORE ZILVERPAVILJOEN
Sterckshof Castle in Deurne (Antwerp) is home to the Silver Museum. This extraordinary building with its many rooms and space for silver houses a silver collection that covers the period from the sixteenth century through to the present day. Presented thematically, the techniques used, the marks, the style and the purpose of the object are explained in their context.
The exhibition showcases fine silver objects from the time of Napoleon, when the antiques played an important role. Empire objects are juxtaposed with antiques from other periods, neoclassicism in the eighteenth century and revival in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Popular objects on display in the exhibition such as the perfume burner and liqueur stand shed light on the origin and provenance of ornamentation and other typical stylistic characteristics.
As a nationally recognised museum Sterckshof Silver Museum presents itself as a research and promotion centre of the silversmith’s trade. Through thematical or historical exhibitions and publications the museum tries to fill the gaps in the history of the Belgian silversmith’s trade.
