GALGOTIAS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW (GUSOL) IS THE FIRST LAW SCHOOL PROVIDING INTERDISCIPLINARY LEGAL EDUCATION TO ITS STUDENTS WITH A FOCUS ON POLICY AND LAW-MAKING IN INDIA. GUSOL was instituted to foster and promote higher values and legal education excellence among all its stakeholders. To fulfil this objective, teaching pedagogies and the curricula are designed to provide extensive and deep exposure to students.

INDIA’S FIRST

INTERDISCIPLINARY

LAW SCHOOL

GUSOL is envisioned as a cutting-edge research-oriented institution that sets the agenda in the policy, law-making and pedagogy domains. GUSOL encourages students, graduates and faculty members to play leading roles in public discourse and policy formation. It also empowers students with multi-jurisdictional competence and a broad-based inter-disciplinary background to tackle new legal challenges faced by industry, academia and policy-makers. GUSOL is exploring the possibilities of developing relevant majors for B.A. besides Honours, such as a B.A. in Economics or Political Science (focusing first on areas where the school has a natural advantage). This pedagogical change is important for a number of reasons. Allowing students to specialise in a B.A. will train them in another discipline which they can then bring to bear on the practice of law, which in turn would enable them to think about problems more creatively. Secondly, having a strong B.A. program enables greater cross-fertilisation of ideas among the faculty and student body of the school, thereby furthering its research agenda. Finally, a specifically developed B.A. program allows GUSOL to position itself uniquely within the Indian academic space. GUSOL seeks to introduce greater flexibility in courses and class sizes. For example, students should be able to choose among different sections of political science that may focus on different topics; or students could decide what order they would take their classes. This methodology would allow students the freedom to pursue their interests within a regulated framework and create multiple discussion communities for different branches of law and the various knowledge-streams flowing across classes. GUSOL intends to create a more varied clinical curriculum, with at least three or four clinics that students can choose from. GUSOL is also working to develop a robust English proficiency program for both struggling and excelling students. GUSOL works ceaselessly towards the development of a premier faculty, well-equipped to teach not only a diverse range of law subjects, but also non-law topics that are central to any B.A., LL.B. and B.B.A. LL.B. education.

FROM THE OFFICE OF

THE CHANCELLOR When we envisioned Galgotias University, we had one clear objective: that we would create an institution, not an organisation. While both institutions and organisations need great human and physical infrastructure, what distinguishes an institution from an organisation is that an institution is an edifice built on the foundation of a better thought-out, deeper value system. Across our journey thus far, it is our deep and rich value system that has made Galgotias University synonymous with quality education. Given our highly qualified faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure, international quality teaching pedagogies, excellent nurturing environment for learning and thinking, Galgotias University is emerging as the institution of choice for students of caliber pursuing higher studies. Our constant endeavour to offer world-best educational facilities and practices, have ensured that Galgotias University is the favored recruitment destination for blue-chip corporates. The new global economic order, rapid technological advancement and the information revolution have opened a new series of challenges as well as opportunities. The ability to innovate and the capacity to adapt to the latest technologies and processes, is going to be the competitive advantage in the new century. We believe that this is only attainable through high quality education imparted through a complete thinking ecosystem of excellent quality. We at Galgotias University have taken the responsibility of developing and nurturing world-class professionals, by imbuing them with what we call Thinking Quotient. Our belief is that all students are thought-seeds who carry within themselves, the latent talent to become a giant banyan tree, given the right nurturing environment. By bringing the finest students and the finest learning environment together, we are emerging as the leading center for knowledge generation and dissemination. It is our endeavor to continuously explore new opportunities, by creating new centres of thinking, learning and growth.

Promising students are at the heart of every great nation. Their thoughts, ideas and value systems shape the society of a great nation’s tomorrow. We are working today, so that each student - the thought-seed of our tomorrow, is nurtured well to ensure that tomorrow’s India realises its full potential to become a great nation state. We believe we are sending tomorrow’s leaders into the world. Leaders who are complete human beings who understand that everything emerges from and integrates into a greater humanity; who know that it is best for all to work towards the common universal good in their individual and collective capacities. I invite all the students to be an integral and positive part of this great thinking tomorrow. SUNEEL GALGOTIA

FROM THE DESK OF

VICE CHANCELLOR The basic purpose of education is not just imparting knowledge as is generally perceived but also to enable students to understand and discover themselves, realise their complete potential and find that one thing that they love the most - the one thing which they are passionate about and would like to pursue as their career. Given an unknown situation, the trained student from a university education system should be in a position to look at it from different perspectives and come to a logical conclusion. This is the orientation that needs to be given to students. Various dimensions in which university students are expected to excel include innovative thinking, logical and analytical skills, intellectual curiosity, trustworthiness, environment and energy consciousness, ethics and moral values - and while at it, gaining an overall development of mind, body and intellect. Galgotias University has been established with the purpose and commitment of training students to develop these very skills. There tremendous institutional focus on every factor that contributes to quality education and the campus and facilities embrace modern technologies with open arms. At the same time, we, at Galgotias University are committed to energy and environment sustenance and hence are creating a 52-acre clean and green campus. We also provide flexibility to our students to learn at their own pace and intensity, through academic pedagogies such as dual degree options with both horizontal and vertical integration by making our curriculum modular and flexible - resulting in a variety of convenient options for students through a credit-based system. As a result, for the overall development of the students, the Galgotias University campus is teeming with opportunities created for extra- and co-curricular activities along with excellence in academic performance.

7

EVOLVED NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PEER GROUP

GUSOL creates and perpetuates a thinking ecosystem for the education of outstanding students to enlarge their thinking and imagination, to enable them to emerge as intellectually, socially and spiritually evolved global leaders. The student body is carefully chosen to ensure exceptional student intake in all respects, so as to do justice to this vision.

CURRICULUM & PEDAGOGY

GUSOL’s curriculum and teaching pedagogy is designed to provide maximum exposure and is delivered through a lecture-tutorial system. The lecture-tutorial based system ensures teaching uniformity and yet gives professors flexibility to use their individual teaching styles. The system enables greater student-teacher interaction for more hands-on activities and discussions. Tutorials are used to discuss essay plans and critique issues in greater detail so as to improve understanding of issues and give professors opportunity to encourage ‘critical thinking’.

HON’BLE JUSTICE DIPAK MISRA INAUGURATES LEGAL AID CLINIC AT GALGOTIAS UNIVERSITY; ENTHRALS AUDIENCE IN SPIRITUAL-LEGAL DISCUSSION AT GALGOTIAS UNIVERSITY ANNUAL PUBLIC LECTURE JUSTICE DIPAK MISRA, JUDGE, SUPREME COURT INAUGURATES GALGOTIAS UNIVERSITY NEW LEGAL AID CLINIC TO HELP GREATER NOIDA’S DISADVANTAGED OBTAIN JUSTICE

The new legal aid clinic at the School of Law, Galgotias University, Greater Noida was inaugurated by Mr. Hon’ble Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India on 26 April, 2014. Justice Dipak Misra also delivered the First Galgotias University Annual Public Lecture. The new legal aid clinic also has a free 24x7 helpline so that people who need legal advice and assistance can call and obtain help instantly.

The legal aid clinic is an initiative of the students and faculty of the School of Law, Galgotias University, in collaboration with the UP State Legal Service Authority in order to give effect to the policy and directions of the National Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 and the National Legal Services Authority (Legal Aid Clinics) Scheme, 2010. The clinic will enable disadvantaged members of the general public, largely hailing from the surrounding areas to access free legal help and obtain speedier justice in the local courts of law. Students from the School of Law will provide assistance with research, drafting legal arguments and client meetings; while the clinic's faculty will represent clients through oral arguments before the relevant Courts. The free legal aid clinic is a well-proven pedagogy to teach law school students the processes of the law and provide hands-on experience.

Through the legal aid clinic, students from the School of Law will render free legal aid, provide assistance in approaching appropriate authorities for redressal of grievances, provide assistance in the resolution of disputes, provide free legal assistance in courts, assist under trials to prepare legal documents and provide pro bono counsel, conduct pre litigation mediation, render preventive advice and monitor follow up in the matters in which legal assistance has been provided etc.

JUSTICE DIPAK MISRA, JUDGE, SUPREME COURT HOLDS STUDENTS IN RAPT ATTENTION WITH SPIRITUAL-LEGAL ADDRESS Engaging in a free-wheeling discussion on the occasion with the faculty and students of Galgotias University, Justice Dipak Misra had the rapt attention and admiration of the audience. With the ease that comes from years of experience, learning, reading and deeply ingrained moral values, the hon’ble judge dwelt on a range of topics ranging from spirituality, literature, philosophy, life and career; quoting with equal ease from the scriptures in Sanskrit, to the law and the classics. He navigated the audience across a spiritual-legal landscape through legal, social and moral issues with practiced ease, remaining thoughtful and inclusive of all. Delivering the First Galgotias University Annual Public Lecture, the central focus of Justice Dipak Misra’s hour-long address was ‘Greater achievements and accomplishments in life are possible if

one is permitted to lead life that is respected by others.’ He held that human rights are justifiable and conditions that will enable a human being to realise his/her worth and help him/her to lead a life of dignity and honour, are critical.

Expanding on the concept of "vasudhaivakutumbakam" or "one world-one family", he quoted from the Maha Upanishad (Chapter 6, Verse 72): Ayam bandhurayam neti ganana laghuchetasam udaracharitanam tu vasudhaiva kutumbakam - Only small men discriminate saying: One is a relative; the other is a stranger. For those who live magnanimously, the entire world constitutes but a family. Elucidating that the principles of peace and harmony among societies and flora and fauna in the world, essentially led to the entire world living by natural, social and moral laws, guided by the forces that created the universe.

Speaking of the complex interconnectivity and commonality of all social orders, he quoted from the Atharvaveda – Samjnana Sukta : “…….Samani prapa saha vonnbhaga samane yoktray saha wo yunism arah nabhimiv abhite.” - All have equal rights in articles of food and water. The yoke of the chariot life is placed equally on the shoulders of all. All should live together with harmony supporting one another like the spokes of a wheel of the chariot connecting its rim and the hub.

He then led all through the concepts and real life manifestations of the ideal state being obliged to protect the right to equality. Quoting from Manu IX 31 48, Justice Dipak Misra explained, “Yatha swarin bhutani dhara dharyate saman tatha swarin bhutani bibharte parthivm vartam” - Just as the mother earth gives equal support to all the living beings, a king should give support to all without any discrimination.

The hon’ble judge said that the right to property is a human right. The right to property is given in Article 300A in part 12 of the Constitution of India and falls within the domain of human rights. His advice to the students and faculty was that the present generation has to keep itself alive to all situations and build a holistic, healthy society. It cannot afford to ponder like Hamlet “to be or not to be” or remain in a Parvati-like situation “na jagau na tasthau”. Said the hon’ble judge, “Life is a verb and not a noun; because to live is to act. The Law must start with doubt and then with synergistic analysis, the truth must be found. Curiosity is the hallmark of a good legal professional. Everyone in this country must be able to say with serenity, that I am a human and whatever concerns humanity is of interest to me. For it is essential not to merely live one’s life, but to live and respect others; because it is exquisitely beautiful to all and one cannot afford to shatter the life of anyone. That should be the barometer as well as the stem of human life. That this was the bedrock of the law, to be protected at all costs. And in protecting the value and quality of life, lay one's own prosperity and growth - Dharmah rakshyati dharmasya... ”

Given that students will serve industry and society throughout their working lives, industry-led syllabi and continual industry interface are ensured through the entire duration of their education. When industry is involved with the gestation and development of talent completely suited to its needs, placement of students is usually a foregone conclusion, even before the end a student body’s academic education. At serious industry-oriented universities like Galgotias University, placement is the concluding component of an end-to-end education system where the entire educational offering is industry-integrated. The university works hard to enable students to be market-ready from day one. Galgotias University follows a process of industry-integration across a student body’s entire education span, which is why the university’s students stand at the forefront of breakthrough research and foster the spirit of innovation. The university has entered into strategic alliances: IBM for the financial analytics program and its connected infrastructure; IBM and KPMG for programs in the School of Business and Max Institute of Healthcare Educational and Research for programs at the School of Nursing. Emphasis on industry relevance ensures a correctly oriented, quality workforce that is cognizant of its social realities and is entrepreneurial in its response to challenges. Galgotias University has MOUs and various models of industry-academia partnership in operation with an array of blue-chip industry partners. Several hundred top corporate and national institutions interact with students with a view to recruitment every year and most placements happen even before students have completed their program of study. Placements reflect the high quality of education at Galgotias University and stand at close to 100% every year according to surveys.
