a few words from our editor

This New Year holds a lot of promise for everyone, especially for those of us who have an interest in the technology world. What’s going to make this year so fabulous, you ask? Once again it’s that time of the year when we gaze at the crystal ball, hoping to get a glimpse of what 2012 has in store for us. As in every start of the year, sages will have their heyday on radio and television, heralding their forecasts and predictions to just about anybody who cares to listen or watch them. Not to be outdone, Gadgets Magazine is doing its share in playing seer in this forecasting business. In this issue, our feature stories attempt to let you in on what’s in store in the exciting world of technology and IT design. Headsets and smart TVs became big in 2011 and we think we should expect more of them in the coming year. Electronics makers also turned out quite an array of tablets—and there appears to be no letup as more models are still on the drawing boards not to mention media players and streamers, digital cameras and smartphones for all types of budgets and requirements. Service providers are finally seriously talking about 4G and its iterations. Our cover girl, the beautiful Iza Calzado, takes us from Mother Nature’s lush earthy garden and into today’s brave new world with the latest gadgets in town in this issue’s photo feature. So there you have it. We’re confident that 2012 will be a great year, and frankly, we think we all deserve one. Happy new year, finally!

BOTTOMLINE: The ASUS Eee Pad Slider SL101 is a definite must-have if you’re looking for a tablet that can cater to both your work and entertainment needs. It’s portable, powerful and has limitless potential.

Innovation is a tricky business, but ASUS has done well in the department by introducing unique designs that have captured the web of technology. One of its latest endeavors, the Eee Pad Slider SL101, might possibly be the first step toward redefining what a tablet’s design is supposed to be.

December2011/January2012

The SL101 has a brilliant 10.1-inch LED backlight WXGA display with Gorilla Glass, which makes the screen scratch resistant. As you may have guessed, it’s a bit heftier than your average tablet, measuring 17.3mm thick (roughly two times thicker than its main competitors) and tipping the scales at 960 grams, but this is because of its built-in physical keyboard, which we’ll discuss later.

26

The color of our review unit came in metallic brown, but the SL101 is available in pearl white as well. It’s actually a little disappointing that this tablet is only offered in two neutral colors, and the lack of the more traditional black or silver is a little odd. Nevertheless, the final finish looks great—it’s sleek enough to be an executive’s tablet and could easily work its way into the hands of techies and hipsters. When held in its prescribed landscape mode, you’ll find all the physical buttons on the left hand www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

side: volume controls, power button and a reset button. I would have preferred that a home button be added instead of a reset switch, since the latter could have been combined with the power button itself. Additionally, you’ll also find the microSD slot on this side, which lets you expand the SL101’s 16GB built-in memory. On the opposite side, you’ll find the USB port and headphone jack, and taking a peek at the top of the SL101 reveals the connection for the power adapter and HDMI port. Equipped with an nVidia Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of memory and running on Honeycomb, the SL101 performed excellently as expected. The touchscreen is very responsive and ergonomic, and users familiar with Android should have no problem using the Slider right away. Since the SL101 is running on Android 3.2, it allows you to link up basic USB peripherals (i.e. mouse), which raises the Slider’s

potential as a powerful on-the-go tool. Additionally, having the ability to connect thumb and external drives is invaluable, so that you can store an entire library of movies to watch while you’re on the move. On a side note, you may want to avail of a media app such as MoboPlayer though, which plays all the common video formats and eliminates the need of having to convert your videos. Now we move on to the SL101’s greatest feature: its physical keyboard. Ironically, it doesn’t really “slide” out as the name implies, and revealing it requires an initially awkward and daunting “prying” method. But once you get used to how much resistance is offered and the necessary force needed, it’s extremely easy and quick to switch between tablet and “netbook’ mode. When the keyboard is out, the SL101’s display tilts at a 45-degree angle, and doubles as a stand if

9.010

you’re watching movies or working. As expected, the keyboard is a little small, but it isn’t uncomfortable— you can literally type entire articles or draft spreadsheets solely using the SL101. The island style keys are great to work with and the addition of Android shortcuts (Home and Return buttons) are a definite plus. If you combine using the keyboard and the touchscreen simultaneously though, it’s very efficient and will definitely push your productivity and navigation speed up several notches. As mentioned earlier, the SL101’s dimensions are a tad bulkier than what most people might desire in a tablet. However, that same weight adds to what makes it one of the most useful mobile devices ever conceived. In my opinion, it embodies the very essence of what the netbook is supposed to be— only better.

BOTTOMLINE: The BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a great upgrade for RIM phone users.

8.710

December2011/January2012

The Torch 9860 is possibly one the sexiest handsets to date—having curves in all the right places, with an almost velvety-matte finish at the back and accented with a sophisticated and classy silver top back frame. One cannot help but feel elegant and refined while holding this smartphone.

28

Despite it being a little larger than those coming from the Bold and Curve series, the 9860 is significantly lighter than its predecessor, the 9800, because of its new all-touch technology. There are a number of mechanical buttons to complement the 3.7-inch touchscreen, including a device lock on top of the handset and the standard quartet of navigation keys on either side of the optical track pad.

Being a Facebook and Twitter junkie, I am on my phone almost 24/7—keeping my accounts updated and giving a blow-byblow account on almost everything going on in my life—from tweeting about ordering take out to what pajamas I’ll be wearing to bed. It is absolutely necessary for my smartphone to deliver as fast as I can say “tweet.” This phone, however, is not the handheld for the task.

The capacitive screen is quite impressive as well, displaying the same stunning features (contrast and color) with the latest Bold 9900. With RIM’s SurePress screen technology, you will surely get a “sure press” within every press of the widget.

With the exception of the physical keyboard, typing can be quite frustrating, whether it be used in its conventional orientation or turned to its side. But once one gets the hang of it, typing can be a breeze, thanks to the SurePress screen technology.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

In terms of connectivity, the 9860 features the same array of plugs and protocols as the Bold 9900. It supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for stereo headphones and HSDPA downloads up to 14.4Mbps. You can synchronize the Torch 9860 with a PC using the microUSB port, and it has a GPS receiver built in as well. For those multimedia file junkies, the 9860 is an absolute joy as it sports an impressive compatibility features with a range of multimedia formats. Beyond the standard mix of AAC, MP3 and MP4 video, the Torch can also play back DivX and XviD video files, plus OGG and FLAC audio files.

Photo and video-taking is also made fun because of its awesome 5-megapixel camera with a bright LED flash. With its many camera and video features, I was able to use the Torch for a number of events and every still and video had that crisp finish we all look for in our average cameras. Although RIM still has a few more stretching to do when it comes to the touchscreen race, the Torch 9860 is still a pleasure to use and stunner to show off.

December2011/January2012

When I choose a shoe, I look for three things: a simple combination of colors, a classic straight forward style and a good fit. Lucky enough, I don’t have to look far for shoes that fit these criteria as Converse has always been a good choice.

30

The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star Modern Ox is a perfect example of my ideal shoe with a modern twist. Out of the box, the colors were the first thing I noticed. The combination of the bright Victoria blue with the standard black and white was a nice simple mix that fits well together. With almost 65% of the shoe taken over by the blue leaving the upper and lower sole and laces as contrast point, the shoes become an instant standout. The only negative is the challenge www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

of finding clothes that pair well with the color and the fear of coloring white socks if the textile gets wet. In terms of design and style, the Modern Ox holds true to the standard Chuck Taylor All-Star style giving off that classic laid-back look that we all know and love about Converse shoes. The low-cut design works well with both pants and shorts allowing you to cover up or dress loose with the ever-changing weather in the country. It uses

December2011/January2012

Put away any impressions of a DSLR or hopes for a pro-ready machine. This is not what the MV800 is all about. The good thing about this camera is that it seems to address a nice old niche for just having a good time taking photos. It’s compact, very easy to use, and is packed with a deep set of features, presets, and extras to play around with.

32

This is not to say that the MV800 is a toy. In fact, by appearance and overall performance, it’s far from any basic digital camera. Its minimal sleek design is both fashionable and well-made. Textured black metal finish is always a beautiful thing and it gives the device the right balance of sophistication. In terms of size, it clocks in at 3.5 inches long, 2.5 tall, and just a little above half an inch thick—making it handy and just the right size to fit any pocket. Perhaps the most striking innovation of the camera is its adjustable 3-inch flip-out touchscreen display that allows for taking photos at (almost) any desired angle. Connected by a single hinge, the LCD can rotate www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

from zero to 180 degrees, or can fold out to the front of the camera for the perfect self-portrait. Of course, mastering the art of taking one’s own photo at arm’s length takes a great amount of skill, aim, and experience, but the MV800 renders the job simple and enjoyable. There’s even a second shutter button tucked away behind the screen that provides a more natural grip and operation for those narcissistic moments. Everything else about the MV800 is in the usual Samsung quality and performance that we’ve all grown to love. It boasts a SchneiderKreuznach 26mm wide-angle lens, with 5x optical zoom and 16.1-megapixel resolution that produce clean and crisp images with stunning color. There may be a few focusing issues in some scenes, and the lack of a full manual mode is rather limiting, but still doesn’t hinder the fun and features that this device can offer. Operation is pleasantly simple with just three buttons on top: power, shutter and zoom; and two at the

back: home/menu and play. All other navigating happens in the touchscreen menus and the UI is also well-designed (think apps in an iPod) and features are all easily accessible without having to weave in and out of confusing groups and subsets. The touch response is also pretty decent, but tends to lag when viewing photos. Driving into the camera features and photo possibilities proves to be one creative joyride. As mentioned previously, this camera is all about having fun and creating as many photo options as possible. The menus are packed with more extras than a zombie army movie. Aside from the usual presets and filters, there’s also the option to shoot 3D images, live panorama, different lomo-style effects, Funny Face, and even a cool Magic Frame feature that lets you place your photo within different settings like on a billboard, on the moon, or in an antique frame (just to name a few). Actually, the depth of the photo possibilities on the MV800 can be quite daunting and tends to overwhelm a user during initial

BOTTOMLINE: If you’re not the serious hobbyist or professional, the Samsung MV800 is definitely one to consider. It’s downright one of the most complete and compact point-and-shoots out there, and will definitely provide the fun and creativity for any situation—especially when taking self-portraits.

BUY METER

A quick glance at most of the photos on your favorite social network will reveal a simple truth: not everyone is a serious hobbyist or professional photographer. The majority of the snapshots are by average camera users who just want to point and click at anyone and anything. They just want the basics—nice and clear photos. Simply put, they just take photos for the sheer fun of it. And that’s exactly what the Samsung MV800 multiview compact digital camera is. It’s the perfect fun-to-use camera.

WHAT’S NOT: • Touch response lag when photoviewing • Not all features are useful • Focusing issues in some shooting modes

usage, but after steadily trying it out in different situations and taking the time to see each one, it becomes a lot more comfortable. I found myself picking out my personal favorite effects and sticking to those in certain situations (i.e. the fisheye effect had me going for a whole weekend). With all things said and done, there really is no huge contention against the Samsung MV800. It does not try to be a serious professional camera. It knows its role as a fun compact point-and-shoot, and it plays it well. It’s simple, sexy and savvy enough to amaze and delight the everyday user.

Nokia N9 SMARTPHONE

By John Nieves

SPECIFICATIONS OPERATING SYSTEM: MeeGo 1.2 (Harmattan) CPU: 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, PowerVR SGX530 GPU LCD SIZE: 3.9-inch AMOLED PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS: 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm WEIGHT: 135 g BAND: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 WHAT’S HOT: • Beautiful screen • Solid build quality • MeeGo is simple and easy to use • Excellent camera WHAT’S NOT: • MeeGo (on Nokia devices, at least) is deader than a doornail • Few apps, weak ecosystem overall

There’s one universal observation that most people would make about the N9—it looks drop-dead gorgeous. Nokia claims that the N9 is the world’s first pure touchscreen phone, and I believe them. Aside from the power button and the volume rocker keys on the right side of the screen, the whole thing is devoid of physical controls. All of the navigation is done through the gorgeous, 3.9-inch capacitive AMOLED touchscreen.

December2011/January2012

Like all self-respecting Nokia devices, the N9 also has an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash on board, as well as a front-facing one for video calls. Oddly enough, the front-facing camera is located on the bottom right of the device.

34

The body is made out of a single block of polycarbonate. Although I wish the N9 was made out of aluminum, the plastic body is just as sturdy and the overall heft of the unit is good—heavy enough to tell you you’re holding something substantial and light enough that it doesn’t feel like a brick in your pocket. The charging and SIM slot rest on the top of the device. To access them you’ll have to pop open the hinge that hides the USB slot. The N9 uses a microSIM card, so if you are dead-set on getting this unit, you’ll either have to cut up your old SIM or get a microSIM version from your carrier. There is www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

no space to put in a microSD card so you’re pretty much limited to the 16GB and 64GB storage that comes with the phone. The internals of the N9 isn’t as peachy as it’s beautiful exterior on paper. It runs on a single core 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU powered with a PowerVR SGX530 GPU providing the graphical horsepower for games and the OS. Connectivity wise, you’ll be getting all the smartphone essentials—WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (with WiFi hotspot functionality), Bluetooth EDR 2.1 and full 3G functionality. Surprisingly enough, the N9 is also equipped with NFC. The real star of the show is MeeGo, which was in version 1.2 (Harmattan) when I got the device. Normally I hate typing on touchscreens, but here too the N9 excels—there’s a slick predictive system in place and the phone

BUY METER

BOTTOMLINE: The N9 is undoubtedly Nokia’s finest device to date. It’s just too bad that it was killed before it was able to strut its stuff. Don’t let that stop you from getting it though—the mere fact that it’s a piece of Nokia history should be enough to justify its purchase.

8.810

vibrates softly with each button press. The keys are all spaced evenly and I rarely, if ever, struck a wrong key while typing on the screen. You can also instantly kill any running app by holding your finger over the app and waiting for the X button to appear over the icon. Once you’re done, click on Done and you’re taken back into the running apps screen.

Call quality was excellent, but then again, it was never in doubt – this is a Nokia device, after all. Another constant for Nokia devices are awesome pictures, and the N9 is no exception to this. The device lasted about a day with moderate use, and we reckon it’s one of the few smartphones that would probably be still standing even if you forgot to charge it the night before.

While it seems that the N9 seems a tad underpowered when compared to other devices on paper, you’ll be happy to know that the processor and GPU combo is perfectly capable of keeping the entire experience smooth. There are a few slowdowns here and there (especially when running some of the apps for the first time, or when refreshing the social feed after a good while) but the experience is pretty good overall.

There’s a huge but to everything that I said, and sadly we’ve come to the point of the review where I tell you what it is. N9 and MeeGo are, for all intents and purposes, dead. It’s a legacy product even before it left the gate. Nokia’s ditching everything not running Windows Phone 7 on its smartphones and that includes the N9 and MeeGo. It’s hard to recommend a product without a future, and that’s what the N9 is—it’s an awesome device that was released too late.

MIRRORLESS CAMERA

By Steven Vea

December2011/January2012

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3

SPECIFICATIONS DIMENSIONS: 107.7 x 67.1 x 32.5 mm SENSOR: 12.1 MP 4/3 type Live MOS LENS: Interchangeable, micro 4/3 stype DISPLAY: 3-inch TFT LCD touchscreen, 460k dots SHUTTER SPEED: 60-1/4000 sec ISO: 160-6400 CONNECTIVITY: USB 2.0, AV out, mini HDMI STORAGE: SD/SDHC/SDXC MAX IMAGE SIZE: 4000 x 3000 MAX VIDEO RESOLUTION: Full HD 1920X1080, 60i (sensor output 30p) VIDEO FORMAT: AVCHD, Motion JPEG

35

WHAT’S HOT: • Extremely compact • Creative Control modes • Pinpoint autofocus and shoot WHAT’S NOT: • Initially difficult to navigate • Built-in flash not high enough • No hot-shoe

You shouldn’t be surprised that Panasonic, the company that introduced the mirrorless camera system, would update its popular Lumix line with something quite impressive. The DMC-GF3 is a very promising mirrorless camera aimed toward consumers who want stellar images coupled with hassle-free operation. It’s quite impossible not to start with the GF3’s miniscule dimensions, for after all, this is its primary selling point. Roughly the size of an iPod and weighing about the same as a typical smartphone, Panasonic has somehow managed to squeeze in a 12-megapixel sensor into the camera’s tiny body.

The 460,000-pixel display is pretty impressive. It’s well illuminated and previews both stills and movies excellently. It can get quite difficult to use though when under direct sunlight, but this is to be expected. The 3-inch LCD touchscreen is accurate and responsive, and features quick navigation icons, making it easy to choose the mode you want to shoot in, such as Program AE, Manual, Creative Control, etc.

slider, you will need to have a lens with a wider opening.

Using the iA and iA+ modes does make it easy to take photos quickly and effectively, although when the mode is active, most menu functions to modify the camera settings aren’t available, so it was quite counter-intuitive to have to switch off Intelligent Auto just to make menu adjustments. However, if you customize your menu/system settings beforehand, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. Moreover, iA is quite accurate and effective in automatically adjusting settings to ensure a quality photo, which point-and-shoot users will love.

You can still achieve some great blur by using the Miniature mode in the Creative Control filter, which is one of the GF3’s most interesting features. As the name implies, a synthesized tilt-shift effect is applied, simulating a shallow depth-of-field. It’s definitely an entertaining option, but you might want to use an SD card with a high-class rating, since images shot in Miniature mode requires intense incamera processing.

The GF3 I received came with the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 lens, although it can also arrive with the 14mm f2.5 pancake prime. However, regardless of which kit lens you choose, you will only really be able to use the white balance and exposure sliders in iA/iA+ mode because in order to effectively make the most out of the GF3’s “Defocus”

The 14-42mm kit lens is not entirely efficient in producing blurred backgrounds or bokeh, since its aperture only reaches up to f3.5, but it’s pretty sharp. Although it might not be a spectacular piece of glass, it still shoots clean and does provide a good focal range for you to work with, allowing you to quickly power on the camera and shoot.

Even though Panasonic managed to squeeze in a built-in flash into the GF3, a hot shoe would have been better. When the 14-42mm kit lens is equipped with the lens hood, the popup flash isn’t high enough to go past it, resulting in the lens hood’s shadow rudely appearing in the photos. If you don’t use the flash, the GF3 does fairly well for a micro four-thirds camera at high ISO’s (max. 6400), but don’t expect

9.010

it to perform like DSLRs. However, since the GF3’s lenses are interchangeable, you can grab Panasonic’s new 25mm f1.4 to maximize low light performance without using the flash. Shooting video with the GF3 is probably one of its strongest traits as well, shooting Full HD 1920 x 1080, 60i (30p sensor output). Its light weight makes it easy to shoot for an extended period of time and it’s small enough to not attract attention. Additionally, the GF3’s compatibility with Panasonic’s 3D lenses can open up a treasure trove of creativity. In the end, if you’re looking for an extremely portable interchangeable lens camera, then the Panasonic GF3 is the one to get. Once you get past all the little hurdles in learning its interface and workflow, it’s an excellent camera that can satisfy the stern expectations of just about anyone. It’s small, compact, works like a point-and-shoot but captures almost like an entry-level DSLR.

gadgetslab

Just by looking at the GF3, you’ll immediately notice that its body is similar to a point-and-shoot than a DSLR. Panasonic opts for the use of the push-button + jog dial combo as the main method of navigating instead of the more familiar click dial. The design is wonderfully simple, and the thumb grip on the upper right corner is a great addition. The only other physical controls on the main user area are the buttons for Menu/Set, play/preview, Quick Fn/Return and one to pop open the built-in flash. On the top of the camera you’ll find the shutter button, video record button and the shortcut to activate iA (Intelligent Auto) mode.

The touchscreen is initially confusing to navigate, but users should have no problem getting into the navigational structure. One very useful touchscreen option on the GF3 is the Pinpoint AF, which allows you to focus on your subject and instantly take the shot with a single touch. This is handy when you want to capture several subjects in a short amount of time, but it’s better applied while shooting video, as you can “manually” track your focused subject.

BUY METER

BOTTOMLINE: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 is a great camera for those who like point-andshoots but want to have the versatility of interchangeable lenses. It might be compact and lightweight, but it’s definitely heavy on features.

BOTTOMLINE: While the LG Optimus 3D does have its rough spots, it’s a pretty solid device overall.

8.010

December2011/January2012

If there’s one thing you’ll notice with the LG Optimus 3D right away, it’s the sheer size of it. At 128.8 x 68 x 11.9 mm, this thing is big. Good news is that you’re also getting a large, 4.3-inch 3D LCD capacitive touchscreen that displays images at 480 x 800 resolution.

36

At the bottom of the generously large screen is where the typical Android navigation keys lie. On the left side sits an HDMI and a USB port while the volume rocker and the dedicated 3D button (where a camera button usually is) sits on the right. The Optimus 3D is capable of capturing stereoscopic 3D pictures via the dual 5-megapixel camera at the back while a smaller frontfacing camera facilitates video calls. The power button and the 3.5mm jack are located on top. The overall build quality is good, if a little boring. LG proudly tells us that the Optimus 3D is powered by its “tri-dual” technology, which means that it has dual-core processor, channel www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

and memory. Powering the Optimus 3D is a dual-core, 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU and has 512 MB RAM. Weirdly enough, the Optimus 3D is powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo). Like any self-respecting smartphone manufacturer, LG has opted to give the Optimus 3D some of their own apps and tweaks which include Social+.

that parralax barrier screens have a very narrow angle of view, meaning that you pretty much have to be facing the screen dead on to fully experience the 3D effect. Another major disadvantage is that when you use the 3D effect, you’re also using more energy to power the backlight to make all the 3D magic possible, which ultimately leads to a shorter battery life.

Like we said, the main appeal of the Optimus 3D is its ability to display 3D images without requiring 3D glasses. It does this via a parralax barrier screen, and while it does allow users to experience 3D without glasses, it has a few drawbacks. One of the major disadvantages of the technology is

Probably the most pertinent question you have by now is whether the 3D effect is worth it. Well, from our experience, it’s a mixed bag. The 3D games gave a good sense of depth and some of our shots using the 3D camera turned out well. Unfortunately, the Optimus 3D runs into the same wall

that most 3D TVs we review hit— lack of content. The Optimus 3D is still a smartphone, and to it’s credit, it’s a particularly solid one. The dual-core processor and the solid GPU means that it is able to handle almost anything you’re able to throw at it. Apps were stable and didn’t hang, calls made to and from it were clear and crisp and we never really experienced annoying slowdowns as a result of constant use. Unfortunately, all those nice features built on top of the Optimus 3D means that battery life suffers, a lot. Like a lot, lot. An hour’s worth of 3D anything effectively nukes a quarter or more of the battery.

WHAT’S HOT: • Low cost in the long run • High print yield • Duplex print and scan WHAT’S NOT: • No wireless connectivity • Initial purchase is expensive • Hardware navigation confusing

Once it’s out of the box, users will be greeted with a very neat and basic interface, which does well to blend in with any office or workspace setting. There is a front-facing control panel that tilts upward to around 45 degrees, with a small monochrome LCD screen that displays a vertical menu with two lines of text. Off to the right side, you’ll notice the dominant directional buttons (with an “OK” in the center) as well as the buttons for Menu, Return, Start/Print and Cancel/Restart Print, which are all represented by icons/symbols. There are no text labels on the any of the physical buttons, which may take quite awhile to get used to, and may require consulting the manual from time to time.

connectivity via Ethernet has been made extremely simple, thanks to Epson’s included software installer. The entire process is practically automated, only requiring a few clicks to proceed onto the next steps of the installation. The network detected the printer quickly and easily and vice versa, so users should have no problems installing the K300 whether it’s at home or in a small office. It’s curious not to see wireless capability though, which could have benefited workspace productivity even more, but perhaps this was a cost-cutting manufacturing solution.

However, installing the software drivers and setting up network

The front loading paper “cassette”or the paper tray leaves more to be

Now that we’ve established the printing quality of the K300, the star of the show is actually its scanner (color and monochrome), which is one of the best we’ve seen thus far. When scanning at the software’s recommended “Office” preset at 300dpi, copying a single page document via the flatbed and saving it to a digital image took no more than four seconds. Using the top load bay to scan was a little trickier though, but the scan time remained the same. I would have liked to see a larger scan size than 8.5”x 11.4” on the K300, to accommodate US legal size or long bond paper. The K300 features duplex printing and duplex scanning, which simply means that it can print and scan both sides of a page simultaneously, saving those precious seconds. Having this capability makes having the K300 around more efficient, especially for urgent time-sensitive

instances, as well as bulk prints. Although the suggested retail price of the K300 isn’t exactly cheap for a purely monochrome printer, it offers an impressive low cost per page selling point of Php 0.45, ensuring that savings will be reflected down the road. Moreover, having an excellent scanner, copier and the capacity for duplex prints and scans, makes the K300 a valuable all-inone solution for any small office or workspace setting. The only question that remains is if there is a viable market for monochrome devices, considering that there are other options that offer color prints at the same price. For after all, not everything is in black and white.

gadgetslab

Setting it up for initial use is quite painless, and with a little patience, you can have it up and running in no time at all. The K300 uses two monochrome DURABrite Ultra ink cartridges, which is installed by lifting the scanner panel to reveal the K300’s insides. It locks firmly into place and once you close the lid, it will initiate an “Ink Charging” state which lasts roughly 10 minutes—which was a lot longer than I expected and desired.

Connections and connectivity are considerably important, but what’s more significant is the quality—and the K300 does not disappoint in this regard and passes with flying colors. With a maximum print resolution of 1440 x 720 dpi, quality is a non-issue but rather a guarantee. Documents printed in Draft Mode can easily rival the standard modes of its competition. Printing is extremely fast, for both dual-sided documents and over the network, which should satisfy the needs of immediacy and efficiency of small businesses looking to maximize their productivity.

desired though—it feels quite flimsy compared with the solid build of the rest of the printer, and adjusting the borders to the appropriate paper size is a little challenging. It’s also quite a hurdle just to load/ unload the cassette, but since it can take a maximum of 250 sheets, users will not have to refresh the paper supply very often.

The K-series is Epson’s monochrome venture into the market of low-cost per page printing, with the K300 as its high-end product.

BOTTOMLINE: If you want a smartphone that can go from personal to business, then the Samsung Galaxy W is your go-to phone. It can help you organize your life with its apps and personalized homescreen.

8.210

I am not really a fan of touchscreen phones. For someone who texts every minute of the day, I find it a bit tedious to type my messages. That is, until the Samsung Galaxy W came my way and proved me wrong.

December2011/January2012

My first impression of the Samsung Galaxy W is that it’s light weight and fits perfectly in your hands. Samsung never fails to come up with beautifully designed phones and the Galaxy W is one pretty phone. Along with its beautiful design is an equally impressive performance.

38

My previous Samsung phones all had metal back covers but the Galaxy W has a plastic back cover and a rubbery texture on the sides. On the right side is the Power/Lock button and on the left side are the Volume controls. The top side has three ports for USB, charger and a 3.55mm jack. Running on Android Gingerbread 2.3, the Galaxy W gives users a fast and pleasant performance. It has a 1.4GHz processor, ready to powerup your applications and games. You also have a flash-enabled www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

browser, giving you instant access to sites that has Flash without having to install plug-ins. The Galaxy W has a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display that gives you very bright, clear and crisp images. Even when you adjust the brightness, you will still get a good experience while navigating through your phone. The touchscreen display enables you to tap, pull, swipe and pinch to zoom, giving you choices on how to navigate through your phone. The good performance of the display however takes toll on your battery life, even when you adjust brightness and other display settings. Even on full charge, I can only use the phone for half a day. The display, WiFi and apps tend to use up battery juice, so you need to carry around that USB cable in case your phone dies on you in the

middle of the day. The Galaxy W comes with the Samsung TouchWiz, giving you total control of everything that goes to your home screen. This is ideal for me because I can put notes on my homescreen. It can be separated whether for work, home, business or everything else. It gives me a little planner right on my home screen. Aside from the Android market, there are exclusive perks for Samsung handset owners. The Samsung W includes a new gaming hub and music hub, where there are 11 million tracks to choose from and to discover what’s best for your smartphone from another 200,000 apps. I need a phone that can handle social networking and can take care of business. I need to stay online

24/7, check my email, Facebook and Twitter accounts as often as I can so the Samsung Social Hub helps me do that. I can also view documents with the document editor which can support Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF. It’s like having your own computer inside your phone. I had a small issue with the Galaxy W though, as the test unit lags when multi-tasking. It tends to stop for a second before finally responding. I also lose widgets and shortcuts I placed on my homescreen. Finding a smartphone these days is a hefty business. The Samsung Galaxy W is one phone that stands out from the rest. It lets you have fun and be productive all at the same time.

BUY METER

BOTTOMLINE: If you want an affordable entry-level Android that can give you more than its price, the Samsung Galaxy Y is definitely one to consider.

8.010

Say you wanted to get acquainted with Android and all of the things Android can do but don’t want to break the bank. Then I recommend the Samsung Galaxy Y for starters. Of course there’s no denying that the Php 4,990 retail price with Smart’s Netphone Edition is nothing short of appealing. But aside from that, you get a phone that’s intuitive, easy to use, and no-nonsense. And though you are paying for what you get in some areas, like the modest 2-megapixel camera, you do also get a nice 832 MHz processor for that smooth, responsive Android 2.3 experience.

To maintain its minimalist sophistication, the Galaxy Y has

only one home button right in the center while the back and menu buttons remain flat and are part of the phone’s face just below the screen. The power button is on the phone’s right side, volume buttons on the left, USB port and 3.5mm jack on the top, and the microSD and SIM slots are at the back and inside of the cover along with the battery that can last you 2-3 days with average (simple call and text) use. Calls were clear and crisp. There weren’t any dropped calls although I did sometimes forget I had to slide

the touchscreen first before I could answer my calls. Entry-level users will like the Galaxy Y since it is very affordable and appealing considering it has practically all the apps Android has to offer (which may or may not be good for students who should do more studying and less app-downloading). Connecting to the internet is fast with its Wi-Fi connectivity while simple browsing is nothing short of delightful. Even the sound quality is not bad, as I watched videos on Youtube and listened to some of my favorite tracks (stored in my microSD card).

But for all of the aforementioned plusses, the only thing that would probably hinder you from truly enjoying the overall experience of using the Samsung Galaxy Y is the screen. If it had been just one inch bigger, had it maximized the remaining space on the screen, it would have been much easier to use. I felt the human effort to work the phone just wasn’t as seamless as I’d hoped. Texting was a chore and, at one time, I was yearning for a stylus. But I suppose there’s always that trade-off.

gadgetslab

Now you don’t have to worry that the phone will only be appealing on the inside as the Samsung Galaxy Y does not look like some run-of-themill bargain phone despite its price. Small, slim and incredibly sleek, the Galaxy Y looks very much like other high-end phones when it comes to design (if not better looking) with its smooth mirror-face and metalliclike trimmings, as seen with the back cover (though it’s still made of plastic) giving the phone a more sophisticated look and durable feel.

BOTTOMLINE: The Noontec Gigalink N5 is an affordable and efficient NAS Media Center that should find its way into your home.

8.510

December2011/January2012

Cloud storage is definitely the next big trend, not just because it offers an easy way to manage files, but because it lets you maximize the potential of your mobile device. The Noontec Gigalink N5 offers just that—at an extremely affordable price.

40

Out of the box, the N5 is coated with a white glossy finish that will easily blend in with any Applebased setup. It looks great and its interface adopts a very classic and minimalist design. The front of the unit only has a tiny LED light to indicate power and on the right side you’ll find the air/cooling vent. Peering at the rear reveals the N5’s LAN port, USB 2.0 port, reset button, power button and the input for the power adapter. Other than that, there is nothing else on the exterior of this media player, which is actually great, design-wise. When it comes to build quality, I must admit that it leaves more to be desired. It feels lightweight and might not survive a face-to-face meeting with the floor. But you won’t accidentally knock the N5 onto the ground if it’s resting on a flat surface, since it is propped up by slip-resistant rubber stands that keep it firmly in place. Additionally, I did personally find www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

the N5 was a little too big for my liking, considering that with a very minimalist design, a few millimeters could have been shaved off its dimensions. The Noontec Gigalink N5 is packaged with only a power adapter, LAN cable and four screws which secure the 3.5-inch SATA desktop drive. Installing the hard drive is relatively easy (it supports up to 3TB), but does require you to unscrew the bottom plate in order to place the drive inside. But since we have opposable thumbs, this job is very easy and shouldn’t take more than five minutes. Also worthy of note is the lack of accessories/components, which does well to foreshadow the N5’s very simple setup time. So what does the Noontec N5 offer you? It acts a Network Attached Storage (NAS) and a cloud server to provide a central place in your home where multiple

users can access all your stored media, whether its family photos, downloaded movies, or music libraries. You can also enable it to download torrents (which I’m sure many Filipinos will appreciate), and it has the ability to automatically download for you even if your PC is turned off, effectively saving power and shaving off numbers on your electric bill. Another great thing about the N5 is that if you don’t want to use it as a NAS, you can use it as a Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) aka external hard drive via USB. Setting up the Noontec Gigalink N5 is quite easy (in fact, it pretty much sets itself up), requiring very little action on your part, which is great. However, a few users might not like the seemingly outdated interface of the WebDav app that you install on your mobile device. The great thing is that it supports Android and iOS, allowing you to access files stored on the N5 anywhere you are

with virtually any device, and up to 4 users can access it at any given time. Moreover, it also works across platforms, whether it’s Windows, OS or Linux/Unix. The N5 is surprisingly versatile and reliable. Although at times it can be a bit sluggish, the lags are not noticeable enough for you to get frustrated with. I admit I initially had my doubts in the beginning, because of the extremely affordable price that the Noontec Gigalink N5 is offered at, but it’s a remarkably efficient NAS media center that definitely gives more value than it financially costs. In the end, if you’re looking for a way for your family to share files at home, or if you simply want your own form of personal cloud storage, then the Noontec Gigalink N5 is a great buy.

Shedding Light on

Studio Lighting By Benjamin Arnold

When it comes to working with studio lights, getting the right mix of shadows and highlights can be quite a daunting—and at times, frustrating—task. But with the help of professional photographer Pearl Perlada, managing partner at Big Bang Studio in Mandaluyong, we will try to expose some light on the tricky charge of studio lighting.

“To get the proper exposure, it is all about ratio,” says Perlada. “I am a strong believer of using the light meter.” This takes out the guess work of lighting your subject. It is also important to keep in mind the sync speed of your camera. “The shutter speed of your camera will depend on what brand and model you’re using. I’m a Canon user, and that syncs at 250 and below. Nikon syncs at around 125.” Using a shutter speed that exceeds your camera’s sync speed will result in light cutoff wherein a portion of the image will be blackened out where the shutter doesn’t sync with the flash. To properly expose your image using a light meter, begin by setting the ISO level to match that on your camera. Input into the meter the maximum sync speed of your camera’s shutter. Then place the meter 2 inches from your subject’s body with the white bulb facing the camera. Hit the measure button and fire the strobe to get a reading. You can make it easier by connecting to the light either with a sync cord or a wireless strobe firing unit to measure and fire the strobe with a press of a button. Take the reading the meter displays and adjust your cameras aperture to fit this. The reading displayed is the optimum aperture for the light setup and takes into account any ambient light that may enter the shot. The number of lights that can be used can vary

through umbrellas that have a wider range in terms of lighting direction along with good light wraparound producing a soft yet well-defined image. They also provide a slight gradient as the light moves out from the center of its direction. These however have greater risk of producing light flares. Reflector umbrellas produce wide light along with a beautiful shine.

Barn doors are perfect for directing light while producing a harsher light output creating heavy shadows. Soft boxes, on the other hand, can help direct light with a diffused effect while preventing any light from spilling out into the camera lens casing camera flares that can degrade image contrast. Soft boxes are also widely favored because of its ability to soften the skin and produce a smoother complexion. Another option for diffusing light are shoot-

Lighting can also affect the mood of your shoot. “I really like using clamshell lighting for beauty shots and when I shoot kids because it gives me that clean crisp look,” said Perlada, “But I also like doing a lot of low key lighting for my clients who likes a more dramatic look. High key lighting works better with food and product photography because it can show off minor details.”

gaming

where playing around is a good thing

Developer: DICE Publisher: Electronic Arts By John Nieves

Battlefield 3 has been a long time coming. It’s a game that’s been on top of the minds of gamers who have slogged through DICE’s other multiplayer masterpieces beginning from the original Battlefield 1942 all the way to Battlefield Bad Company 2. So, after the long, arduous wait, is Battlefield 3 worth it? Battlefield 3 is the latest installment of DICE’s multiplayer shooter franchise. The main focus is on the team, combined with arms warfare on a modern battlefield. You get to play on two sides of the conflict (US Marines and Russian Paratroopers) in both the singleplayer and multiplayer modes on sprawling maps that include wide open spaces (Caspian Border, Kharg Island) and cramped urban environments (Operation Metro, Grand Bazaar).

If the single player campaign is a showcase of the Frosbite 3 engine, then the multiplayer is where the meat of the game lies. The Battlefield series has always been about massive, multiplayer mayhem and Battlefield 3 follows this tradition. There are nine multiplayer maps available, with four more coming via the Back to Karkand DLC. Each map has its own focus, whether it’d be MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) as is the

The whole point of the Battlefield series is learning to work as a cohesive team. In line with this, players have the option of choosing between four distinct classes with unique abilities: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Each class fills a certain niche in the battlefield—the assault class revives and gives health to friendly units while engineers take down armoured and airborne targets—and usually the team with the best unit cohesion wins most of the rounds.

Battlefield 3 also features a pretty substantial ranking system. Each rank unlocks dogtags, uniform variations and weapons. Each class also has its own unlock path with class specific weapons and tools for your soldier to use. This particular unlock system also applies to vehicles while tanks, jets, scout helicopters and the like have their own unlock paths as well. Another first for the series is the use of EA’s Battlelog, a browser based system that allows

you to track your progress and keep tabs on what your friends are up to. Think of it as Facebook for Battlefield 3. It’s also your portal to playing the game. That’s right folks, no more browsing for multiplayer servers in the in-game server browser—you’ll be doing it all on your browser—searching for servers, launching games, heck, even the campaign requires you to go through Battlelog before you’re able to play. From what I’ve gathered, the use of Battlelog is a polarizing topic among BF3 players—some love it, some hate it but for now, it’s all they’ve got.

Battlefield 3 also marks the debut of Origin, EA’s answer to Valve’s Steam. It’s basically a digital distribution system for EA games and it’s a required install if you’re looking at playing Battlefield 3. Unfortunately, there have been concerns about privacy because of the terms Origin makes you agree to before using the service. And there’s a booming Filipino community for the game as well, with Melee Missle (www.meleemissle. com) providing servers for the local community to play at. Unfortunately the servers are located in Japan (you can only rent from EA-approved partners) but the latency is good enough to play without major rubber banding issues. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

December2011/January2012

Unlike its predecessor, BF3 has a dedicated single player campaign. It’s the same “you must save the world from Russian terrorists” fare that we’ve seen from previous shooters. You play the role of Blackburn, a US Marine that needs to stop Russian terrorist Solomon from unleashing nuclear winter on the streets of New York.

case with Grand Bazaar and Operation Metro, or combined arms battlefield with jets, tanks and helicopters in Caspian Border, Operation Firestorm and Kharg Island.

e h t g n i t c e Sel Tablet t c e f Per By Presy Alba

There is no question that the Apple iPad is still winning in Tablet wars hands down. But let’s face it, the starting price of P23,990 for a 16GB WiFi model can make a big dent in your pocketbook, especially if you only want a device for mobile entertainment and communications device that has a larger screen than your mobile phone. If you already have other Apple devices such as a Mac computer, iPhone, or iPod touch and if the price is within your budget, go for the iPad. It would be illogical to get something else running on a different platform when you can sync and use your Apple gadgets seamlessly especially with the new iCloud service.

December2011/January2012

However, if your current gadgets run on another platforms, you might want to consider other tablets that are available in the market. When selecting the perfect tablet for your needs, take note of the following conditions or scenarios:

46

Compatibility with your current gadgets If your mobile phone runs on Android, it would be practical to get a tablet with an Android operating system as well so that you will be able to share apps and transfer files and you can purchase apps in one place, the Android Market. Now if your current mobile phone runs on Windows, you might want to check out the Asus and Lenovo tablets, especially if you intend to use your tablet for work. Running on Windows, these tablets can handle MS Office applications with ease, and will make your tablet a very good travel companion on business trips. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Screen size and weight Tablet screen size can range between 7 and 12 inches, with the larger ones weighing a bit more than the small-sized tablets. Although you can resize the font and other content for comfortable reading, a larger screen will always offer a wider perspective. However, if you are comfortable with a smaller screen, your chosen tablet will be lighter and easier to bring along. App availability Apple may have the widest selection of apps today, but the Android Market is fast catching up. Many of the most popular third-party apps already offer an Android version. Windows-based tablets are even better because many of the softwares can also be loaded into the device. Tablet features and accessories When choosing a tablet, you might also want to check out its features such as cameras, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port availability, external or expandable storage, etc. It might be also wise to see what accessories are currently available in the market.

An Alternative Christmas By Presy Alba

Whether you are still in school or already working, you will be attending quite a number of Christmas parties. You might be expected to bring a gift to exchange with other guests. Sometimes to make things a little more exciting, you will be asked to bring along things you either do not use anymore or never used before in the hope that your “junk” will be someone else’s treasure. It is hard to accept this fact, but the truth is, Christmas has become too commercial and gift oriented. We feel obligated to buy other people gifts just because we’re expected to. We feel required to buy something for bosses, teachers, and co-workers and then we all end up receiving token Christmas gifts that we don’t have any use for. We also end up spending money that could have gone to something more worthwhile. This Christmas, I’d like to suggest that we spend our limited resources more wisely by buying gifts recipients will truly appreciate. If you feel clueless as to what to get your loved ones in this season of gift giving, I recommend that you go to www.giftgen. co.uk. The website has a cool filter that allows you to select the price range you’re willing to spend for the gift, the age group and character of the recipient. You can even choose if you want the gift to be gender specific or generic.Once all the filters are selected and you hit search, the site will churn out a list of possible gifts with website links and store names. The only constraint is that all its suggestions are UK based but I am confident that unless it is a special item, you will be able to get a substitute product at the mall. If you cannot find the perfect gift, why not send a customized e-card from www. nochristmasgiftsthisyear.com? You can even invite your friends and colleagues to do the same and this can become a bonding experience for you and your co-workers or an opportunity to reconnect with a friend. Best of all, you won’t be spending a single cent to make that person feel special this Christmas.

Whatever you do this Christmas, I hope that you will aim for quality and make your friends and loved ones very special because you took the time to plan something special for them.

Another alternative would be to give your friends and family a gift card from www.kiva.org that will allow them to lend the money to a poor entrepreneur and help at least one family move out of poverty. After the loan cycle is completed, your friend or loved one can either withdraw the money from Kiva or relend it again, helping more people build their microbusinesses.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport Reloaded December2011/January2012

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. is bringing more excitement to its flagship SUV with the release of the new Montero Sport. The 2012 model offers more refinements and technological advancements to make the ride more enjoyable.

48

The 2012 Montero Sport GLS V 4x2 automatic is now equipped with the 5-Speed INVECS-II automatic transmission with Sportronic mode and Magnesium Alloy paddle shifters for better fuel efficiency and on demand shift action during spirited driving. The rear brakes have also been revised to feature ventilated discs for those fadefree stops. Going inside the 2012 Montero Sport, cooling efficiency has been improved as it now features overhead aircon vents for both second and third row passengers. Cruise Control is also an added standard feature of the Montero Sport GLS V 2WD and 4WD and GTV variants. The cruise control provides convenience and relaxed driving especially on highways and long stretches. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Early this year, MMPC introduced the VGT technology for the automatic variants of the Montero Sport and the Strada. The Variable Geometry Turbo technology reduces the lag time and increases overall efficiency across the entire RPM range. Aside from being powerful, durable and dependable, this engine has been noted to be, responsive and economical. It is because of the VGT that made the 4D56 2.5 liter four In-line DOHC 16-Valve Turbocharged and Intercooled Direct Injection Diesel produces 178PS and 350 Nm of torque. Now for 2012, the manual transmission variants of the Montero Sport gets VGT but the news gets even better: 178PS and 400Nm of torque.

The Montero Sport is also the first in its class to feature a fully integrated Multimedia and MultiInformation System in a very convenient and userfriendly package. Dealer option entertainment system features 1-DIN In-Dash 7-inch LCD monitor with touchscreen interface, DVD/CD/ MP3 AAC/ WMA/ WAV/ tuner with preset stations. Accessing the vehicle’s vital information such as fuel consumption, speed, range, direction (compass), outside temperature, outside pressure, elevation, and periodic service maintenance reminder is now made easier with just a touch on the LCD screen. In addition, Montero Sport GTV, GLS-V 4WD, and GLS-V 2WD models are equipped with Global Positioning Navigation System which will

assist the driver to navigate easily through various thoroughfares. Integrated also to the MultiInformation system of the Montero Sport GTV and GLS V 4WD variants is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System which relays the real time condition of all tires such as air pressure and temperature.

Safety is also top of mind with the Montero Sport as it is made using the RISE technology. RISE or Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution makes the passenger cabin very safe in the event of an accident by absorbing the impact and providing a safety cocoon for the passengers. Other standard safety features are dual front SRS airbags and Anti-lock Braking System that works in tandem

For the 4x4 variants, Montero Sport GTV and GLS V are equipped with the Super Select 4WD system which is the same type found on the current Pajero. The secret of this system is its synchronized freewheel front differential which lets the driver switch from 2WD to high-range 4WD even at speeds up to 100 km/h – and back at any speed with just a movement of the lever. The Montero Sport GTV is also equipped with a hybrid-type limited slip differential which provides additional assurance that power will be transmitted as positive traction to all wheels. The Montero Sport is available in eight colors: Gemstone Grey Mica, Cool Silver, Sedona Red, Savanna White, Pyrenese Black, Claysoil Beige, Lorenz Blue Mica, and Quartz Brown. Mitsubishi Motors Philippines will back it up with a 3-year or 100,000 kilometer warranty. Suggested retail price for the 2012 Montero Sport 2.5 GTV 4WD is Php 1,708,000; GLS V 4WD is Php 1,530,000; GLS V 2WD is Php 1,448,000, and Php 1,330,000 for the GLX V Limited 2WD.

mobility

Extensive research and development were invested to ensure that the Montero Sport will provide superior riding comfort than the competition. The excellent riding comfort of the Montero Sport is made possible by its front double wishbones with coil springs, and a rear 3-link coil suspension with a long trailing arm design. Both ends are fitted with stabilizer bars to reduce body roll during cornering. A power assisted rack and pinion steering system provides good road feel, better response, and a class leading turning radius of only 5.6 meters.

Foton Passenger Vehicles & Light Duty Trucks Display

Thousands of guests and distinguished government officials flocked to PICC Forum 2 in Pasay City last October as Foton Motor Philippines (FMP) launched its bigger and more extensive line-up of commercial vehicles and machineries. Joining Foton’s wide array of passenger vehicles and trucks were the brand’s new heavy equipment and construction machineries. December2011/January2012

With Foton’s new wheel loaders, excavators, backhoe loaders, rollers, and forklifts now uniting with the brand’s line-up, Foton is definitely ready to cater to all industries in the spectrum, shared Rommel L. Sytin, President and CEO.

50

“Now Foton has the sole brand distinction in the Philippines of having the full product profile” he adds, “from passenger vehicles to light or heavy duty trucks, to special duty trucks and tractor heads, all the way to excavators, wheel loaders, even bulldozers, and forklifts—under a single brand name.” The new line up brings a bigger promise for Foton as a competitive brand. As the man behind the success of a thriving and growing name, Sytin expressed his excitement in finally serving “the full range of equipment requirement of SMEs and strategic enterprise operations such as logistics, construction and mining industries.” www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Chevrolet Traverse

The Covenant Car Company (Chevrolet Philippines) has finally released its contenders in the multipurpose-vehicle market by launching the seven-seater Orlando and the Traverse. Chevrolet Orlando

The second- and third-row seats may be stored independently or together to make a completely flat load area that can accommodate as much as 1,594 liters of cargo. The theater-style seating arrangement of the Orlando’s three rows of leather seats and the numerous storage solutions are sure to attract the attention of family motorists. Perhaps the most ingenious is the storage area hidden behind the front faceplate of the audio system. By simply flipping up the faceplate, items like sunglasses, wallets or even an MP3 player can be stored in it. Within the space itself, there is also a USB port--ideal for recharging an iPod when on the move. Other features include electronic/automatic cruise control, power-operated windows, pulse and moisture-sensitive wipers, automatic headlamp controls and a tire repair kit for families that are becoming ever more self-sufficient in every day dealings.

December2011/January2012

52

The newest Orlando MPV eschews the bland designs usually seen in the segment and adopts a bolder look with its low roofline and crossover-inspired silhouette. It bears, of course, the brand’s distinctive face depicted by the split radiator grille and bow-tie badge. The interior also features the latest design cues from Chevrolet like the Corvette-inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue backlighting at the center console. Numerous seating configurations are also possible.

The Orlando is powered by a 1.8-liter inline-four engine that, when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, gives it an output of 139hp and 176Nm of torque. A crossover sport-utility vehicle, the Chevrolet Traverse has a 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct injection technology and continuously variable valve timing, allowing it to put out 288hp and 366Nm of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, Chevrolet claims the Traverse has a fuel consumption mileage of 10.203 kilometers for every liter of fuelwww.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

the best fuel economy of any eight-seater SUV. Its exterior carries Chevrolet’s signature dual-port grill while the angular taillights and 20-inch wheels give it sleek and classy look. Inside, the Traverse gets an eight-way electronically adjustable premium ebony leather seat as well as a steering wheel that’s adjustable for both rake and reach. The front seat passenger sits on a similar electronically-adjustable seat with fourway lumbar control. Besides its generous cargo carrying capacity, the Traverse can seat up to eight passengers with its second- and third-row split bench seats comfortable enough even for adults. Completing the Traverse’s luxurious cabin features are its Bose 10-speaker system for surround sound that includes remote audio controls with headphone jacks, a personal connectivity package that includes Bluetooth and wireless technology for select phones, and a satellite navigation system. Safety is also a premium with the Traverse, hence its five-star overall safety rating in its segment from the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) in the US. Besides its six air bags including the head-curtain side-impact air bags that help protect all three rows in cases of collision, there’s also the Stabilitrac stability control with traction control, integral spotter mirrors that are integrated into the outside mirrors to enhance visibility on its sides, a rearview camera reflected onto the rearview mirror and the ultrasonic rear parking assist with its two monitors to visually alert the driver of stationary objects located behind the vehicle at low speeds. The Orlando is priced at Php 1,188,888 while the Traverse is available for Php 3,088,888 for the twowheel drive variant while the all-wheel drive model is priced at Php 3,488,888.

Tap

revolution

One of the most interesting pieces of technology that’s now trickling into high-end smartphones is Near Field Communications (NFC). Here, two devices can wirelessly exchange information by tapping onto each other. Google is already rolling out Google Wallet, which basically turns any smartphone into a payment gateway. Smart has also made strides with this technology, allowing Nokia C7 subscribers to get prepaid updates and download mobile content via tapping their device on especially-marked posters in select outlets.

December2011/January2012

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

SOLID AS A Rock

Unlike other wireless technologies, NFC has a short range of about 1.5 inches which makes it a good choice for secure transactions, such as contactless credit card payments and can also serve as a contactless security card. Pretty soon, your own mobile phone can replace those bulky house, car and office keys. Airline tickets, concert tickets, VIP club entrance (minus the dirty little stamp stain on your wrist) are other excellent applications. Of course, for everything your phone can now do, you better be extra careful holding on to it.

Solid state drives are the Ferraris of the storage world. They bring faster read and write times, and as a result, allow faster overall performance. But like Ferraris, they’re extremely expensive (a 120GB SSD sells for about Php 11,000). That’s all set to change. A Gartner study said consumer-grade SSDs will have a breakout year in 2012. The research firm predicts that by the second half of 2012, prices for mainstream SSDs will drop to about $1 for every gigabyte, which is half of what a consumer pays for today. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? As the name suggests, SSDs remain solid which we can pretty much equate to being more sturdy, stable, and speedy. As it is a microchip and has no moving parts, it is less susceptible to shock (so you’re sure your data remain secure). In notebooks, SSDs give better battery endurance and power efficiency while giving you a faster boot time. And who doesn’t want a more “solid” gadget that’ll keep you and your precious data secure and safe?

While voice recognition technology has been around for quite a while, it took a company like Apple to properly integrate the technology into a product that literally changes the way you look at it. Just like any other piece of technology, Apple is not going to be able to have a monopoly for long. Vlingo does most of what Apple’s Siri does—albeit with less flair and panache.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

4G everywhere

“Your wish is its command” – that’s exactly what Siri offers and perhaps the rest of the devices offering the same technology. It’s taking hands-free to a whole new level and allowing for a completely different level of multitasking.

We’ve been wondering when Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology will finally make its official debut in the Philippines. LTE is like 3G on steroids and promises speeds up to 50 to 60 Mbps on mobile devices. Unfortunately, to use LTE, you’d have to use a completely different device altogether. The good news is that there’s now already a whole range of phones and tablets out in the wild. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS is set to launch sometime next year, and with it, numerous tablets running it. Windows 8 is a complete departure from its predecessors and is specifically made with tablets in mind. Next year will also see the release of Google’s latest update to its Android OS, the Ice Cream Sandwich. This is significant because ICS represents the first time the search giant has integrated both smartphone (previously Gingerbread 2.3) and tablet (Honeycomb 3.2) versions into one OS—giving manufacturers the freedom to create unconventional products. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Bid paperback novels, thick school books, notebooks, trapper keepers, pens, pencils, perhaps even your laptop and that big ol’ bag that used to carry all of those things adieu for now the tablet PC is all these things rolled into one. Only this time, it’s thinner, lighter and more portable bringing with it a variety of apps readily available at your disposal. It’s almost quite paradoxical how we now have all the information we need on a tablet.

coverstory

Mind my OS

You may not be aware of it (or you’ve simply evolved with the technology as fast as you could care to notice), but 4G can truly bring about what they call the “Internet of Things”—which means everything that was once physical can now have its own virtual representation via the internet. And if LTE really is “3G on steroids,” then you can expect more services for quick and easy access at incredible speeds via your portable and mobile devices.

Sound Serious By Steven Vea

Music has a profound place in our lives, and simple words cannot describe its impact, whether it’s to rescue us from heartache or to simply fill the void that silence creates. So shouldn’t something so significant be received in the best way possible? Often times, people opt for a “cheap” pair of earphones (such as the ones that come included with their MP3 players), which is quite disheartening. Headphones are more than a utility or an easily replaceable accessory—it is the conduit of an essential part of our lives. Therefore, if you value music, then place an equal amount of value on the headphones you use because great sound deserves a great pair of cans.

December2011/January2012

What do the specs mean?

58

Circumaural vs. Supra/aural In the simplest terms, circumaural (aka full/sized) headphones have earpads that cover the ears completely, and are usually designed to block out unwanted external noise. Supra/aural headphones, on the other hand, have earpads that rest on top of the ears and usually weigh significantly less. Open-back vs. closed-back Basically, open/backs leak out tangent sound and are less effective in blocking out ambient noise. Their advantage, however, is a more accurate and natural acoustic soundstage akin to speakers, since sound has room to “breathe.” Inversely, closed/back (aka sealed-set) headphones are better in isolation and attenuation, but often have trouble producing a depth of field, making the music appear to be directly inside the center of your head. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Impedance, Sensitivity and Frequency Response Impedance is a form of electrical “resistance” measured in ohms that plays a role in the volume output of headphones, but it usually concerns the load on amplifiers. Generally, a rating of around 30-100 ohms is best suited for mobile devices, since it results in higher volume output and requires less power to be driven. Any rating above that is usually intended for stationary systems (i.e. Hi-Fi amplifier) and professional studio applications. Sensitivity refers to decibels of sound pressure level per 1 milliwatt of input (db SPL/mW). Tech speak aside, if you’re looking for headphones for a mobile device, a higher sensitivity is best suited, since these require less power to reach louder volumes. Generally, a sensitivity of 100 db or greater is optimal for portable headphones. When it comes to frequency response, the average person’s audible range is from 20Hz to 20,000Hz, and anything outside this scope is rarely perceived, except to young children and adults with so-called “golden ears.” Since sound quality is innately subjective, as long as this standard range is met, you need not worry. You will simply have to determine for yourself which pair of headphones translates sound that best suits your tastes, since each manufacturer has its own distinct sound coloration. Always remember the golden rule: Try before you buy.

Family Viewing At its Best With ever-evolving technology continuously changing the face of entertainment, staying at home and logging in precious time with the family makes more and more sense nowadays— especially with the Samsung LED 8000 Smart TV. The sophisticated design and innovative technology lets users personalize their entertainment with its intelligent features.

December2011/January2012

The Samsung Smart TV boasts of an integrated entertainment system, understandable, uncompromised quality, and an at-home experience like no other. Now, watching movies, hosting sleepovers for the kids, or catching up with relatives on social networking sites can now be enjoyed in one sleek package.

60

On Fridays and Saturdays, when the kids are given downtime from school, Sophia, Lily and Stella enjoy the size of the screen during special ‘movie screenings’ with Mom and Dad. “It’s like sitting in a cinema,” Daphne raved.

Daphne Oseña-Paez, television personality and entrepreneur, along with her husband Patrick Paez, journalist and television news executive, and their three daughters Sophia, 8, Lily, 5, and Stella, 2, are testament to this.

The family favorite, though, remains to be the Samsung Smart TV’s 3D capabilities. But Daphne strongly suggests getting more than one pair of 3D glasses! “We tried watching a 3D movie with our Blu-ray and it turned out to be a disaster because we only had one pair of 3D glasses. The kids almost fought!” she recalls.

“It has become another way of bonding for us,” she says. “We like cuddling in bed with our three girls, just watching TV. We like the ease in which you can shift from television to web to disc— even karaoke, since we hooked up our Samsung Smart TV with one,” Daphne shares. “Some mobile phones are harder to use, yet this TV can do almost everything except make a call.”

For anyone who is in the market for an upgrade, Daphne trusts that the Smart TV is it. “Looks-wise, it is the best out there. It is sleek and unobtrusive—definitely the one for those who don’t want a TV that dominates and overwhelms their living space. Price-wise, there is nothing else as feature-packed in its price range.”

Inspiration is everywhere, and it’s no different when it comes to gadgets. Over the years, we have seen fashion designers collaborate with gadget brands, inspiring one with the other—or vice versa.

There have been thousands of collaborations when it comes to the music industry, giving artists a chance to verge into different genres of music. Musical gadgets also have similar collaborations, like the Colette X Vestax “Typhoon” Midi USB controller. Typhoon is an all-in-one bundle of digital DJ hardware and software.

Samsung recently got together with famous designers Rhett Eala, Rajo Laurel and Randy Ortiz to showcase their take on the Samsung Notebook Series 9. Randy Ortiz took on the trait of “thin,” Rajo Laurel with “bright” and Rhett Eala with “light.” Each designer made his collection around these traits and presented them to customers.

The Sensation XE could possibly be HTC’s ultimate multimedia phone as it comes with a 4.3-inch expansive q-HD display and an equally impressive audio capability.

Fragment design also collaborated with Beats by Dr. Dre. Beats has been a popular headphone brand and Fragment is giving it more spunk with a clean gray colorway with stripe details on the sides. There is also a small white fragment design logo, allowing a cleaner and bolder look. G-shock is going for a more street design with Dee & Ricky X G-shock. The New York-based fashion design duo is showing their fashionable flair with G-shock the second time around with the GA-111DR-7AERR. This limited-edition chronograph perfectly pairs an extra-large digital with the duo’s design aesthetics. The Dee & Ricky logo appears on the band and the engraved back case features the Dee & Ricky caricature. Jil Sander in collaboration with LG Electronics presents the latest fashion phone to hit the market. The designer brand chose to work on a Windows Phone while staying true to Jil Sander’s signature aesthetic. The result, a mobile phone with a very clean design concept and nice contrasts.

hen my Zumba dance instructor Jill Ngo told me that her dance studio offered Shorinji Kempo classes, my curiosity was piqued. And even though that excitement was out of a mere assumption of what Shorinji Kempo was, I figured it would be just as fun to learn, as Ms. Ngo is a rather talented belly-dance instructor as well. I would later find out that it is not a dance, but a form of martial art.

as a uniform. The 90-minute class also included meditation and a basic back massage lesson which you can do with your partner. Though this may seem a bit unorthodox, to be so close to your partner as to “massage” him/her, in Shorinji Kempo, you learn “to live half for yourself and half for others.” By studying Shorinji Kempo, one acquires not only self-confidence and courage but also an understanding of the importance and joy of cooperating with others.

Nick Gloeckl, a black belt shodan (first level), was our instructor. We began with a warm-up of lots of jumping and “loosening up” if you will (which we attest we found harder than the actual training). Then from the basic stances, punches and kicks onto defensive combinations with our respective partners and other trainees. It’s encouraged that anyone who sign up for the class invest in a gi

In our first session, we were taught a combination of moves that, if properly executed, can disarm and immobilize your attacker without much energy. pon arriving at peak performance, we signed the sign-in sheet and then proceeded to the second floor where the dojo was located. The class consists of roughly 12 to 15 people, some of whom have been doing it for a few months. Newcomers fit in perfectly with the way the class was conducted—the instructor would begin the session by teaching the basic stances and movements then slowly combine these into complex combinations. However, it’s best that one must practice with a partner to develop and adapt to the varying thought processes of a person. Most of the stances and movements of Shorinji Kempo combine a variety of soft and hard movements that focus on defense and evasion. Only one real move was developed for offense which was taught to us during the session. The move was quite effective as Michelle demonstrated on me with the result of me lying flat on my back, begging her to stop—instantly bringing the class to an end.

All the moves, philosophy and knowledge come at the amazingly affordable price of Php 50 per head which pays for nothing more than the rent of the studio—as the main purpose of Shorinji Kempo, said our instructor, is to improve society, one person at a time.

Pain-free testing

The Philippines has been identified to rank first in the number of breast cancer incidences in Asia at 47 percent of the population, and among the top countries in the globally. But Filipinas avoid having themselves examined annually for fear of the pain that goes with mammography.

December2011/January2012

There’s a center at the Bonfacio Global City offers a painless, stress-free and respectful method to test breasts for possibility of cancer growth. Inframed is the first in the country to offer breast thermography services.

80

Unlike the more popular mammography and ultrasound procedures, thermography is as easy as having your picture taken. The process is fast (15 minutes), non-invasive, pain-free (no contact or compression) and the patient need not be exposed to any kind of radiation. Thermography is an application of Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging. Instead of an image formed by light in normal cameras, an infrared camera takes a picture of the surface heat of an object or a person and then creates a visual representation of that thermographic image for analysis. The resulting image shows the differences in a person’s surface body temperature; with each color representing a specific range of temperatures. Hot spots indicate a possible problem and flags potential risk. Abnormal hot spots more often precede the formation of detectible www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

growths, which is why thermograms provide the earliest possible detection of breast diseases, including cancer. Before going through the process, a patient needs to follow protocols which include avoiding sunbathing or tanning five days before the procedure, shaving of the area to be examined, physical stimulation, and on the day of the exam, no exercise, hot shower, lotions, powders or even antiperspirants. The customer will have to disrobe in a spa-like waiting room and “acclimatize” for 15 minutes. Then a certified technician tells the patient how to go through the process and also adjusts the angle of the camera. Inframed uses the top-of the-line camera system developed by Texas-based Infrared Camera Inc. that comes with a bundled medical software. Its female technicians, meanwhile, are certified by the International Academy of Clinical Thermology. The results are e-mailed to US-based doctors for interpretation and returned within a period of seven days. A session costs about Php 5,000.

Preparing for the New Year By Princess Lim-Fernandez

December2011/January2012

yin&yang

81

The holidays are just around the corner and we are giving you the checklist on what to prepare for the coming Year of the Water Dragon. 2012 will be a year of breakthroughs; it will be a year of new things. It will be a good time to try to verge into a new business, get a notch up into a relationship or to open doors for new opportunities. As this year is Year of the Water Dragon, everyone is expected to go with the flow or follow the trend. It is a time where people will go out of the box and join in the fun. The new year is a good time to open businesses that have something to do with water. Restaurants, bars, travel agencies and water refilling stations will turn in good returns and will be in harmony with the water dragon. The spring festival starts on January 23, 2012 and ends on February 6, 2012. This is a time to celebrate, give thanks and be closer to family and friends. Contrary to popular belief, the Year of the Water Dragon doesn’t start right after the Chinese New Year but after the spring festival, which is on February 7, 2012. The Chinese New Year this 2012, however, is on January 23, 2012.

Everyone has their own way of celebrating this holiday but there are commonalities on as to how it is celebrated. Filipinos inherited Chinese culture. As you look around, you can see how the Chinese influenced the Filipino culture and way of life. Filipinos also celebrate the Chinese New Year, whether they have ancestors who are Chinese or they just believe in the good luck the new year could bring them. So what to you do for the New Year? First is hear the mass. Whatever your religion is, you have to give thanks to the year that has been and to pray for the upcoming one. On your feast table, be sure to put 5 kinds of round fruits—avoid bitter ones or those that have dark seeds. Place ang pao on your table as well. These are red envelopes where you put money to keep for the whole year. Flowers need to be on the table as well, just avoid white ones. Coins should also be placed on a wealth bowl to help attract money luck. For a sweet year, place sweets and

candies in a bowl. And of course, tikoy is also a staple on tables. Holidays are a good way to bond with the family. It is one of the most important thing to keep in mind. Having family and friends with you makes the energy around you positive. It will make the bond between relationships stronger and better. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of planning a get-together or a party for the Chinese New Year, you can join us for a celebration and program at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Makati. After the New Year, it’s time to prepare for 2012. I have been giving you advice based on the year’s Flying Stars or directions. The stars change their position every year. There will be a new chart to follow in 2012 (below) with the cures for each direction. Each cure is carefully chosen to alleviate the effects of the bad stars and enhance the effects of the good stars.

hit the right beats with the latest sound tech

Back to Lo-Fi

By Steven Vea

Technology is synonymous with change, and there is no doubt that we can expect more powerful computer processing in the road ahead, but what does it mean for musicians?

December2011/January2012

Technology is making its presence felt in music by fusing the advances made in computers with the hands-on skill associated with playing traditional instruments, resulting in a new breed of musicians that blend the artist with the geek. This can be observed in the emergence and popularity of USB controllers which are devices that grant users a “bridge” to physically manipulate music production software. Controllers have been embraced by consumers worldwide and will continue to enjoy a presence in any studio setup for several years to come because they offer a cheaper and more flexible alternative, and can easily integrate into any existing computer-based rig.

82

However, for those who have had the opportunity of using controllers, you’ll understand that these are still high-tech toys in its infancy. Since controllers do not have any preprogrammed sounds, these require a sound source, which is

now a computer equipped with an additional external soundcard/audio interface and Virtual Studio Technology (VST) plugins to utilize their functional potential.

towards emulating the character and grit of vintage, analog “obsolete” gear such as the Fender Rhodes, Moog Synthesizer, and the Akai MPCs.

However, VST plugins are just virtual “emulations” of actual analog gear, and while controllers offer a hands-on path toward software-based music, aspiring electronic-based musicians should never underestimate the power and quality of dedicated musical instruments and hardware. After all (which is the case with most gadgets), there’s a valid reason why standalone synthesizers and samplers are considerably more expensive.

Now that we’ve mentioned Akai’s legendary beatboxes, it’s necessary to state that the MPCs have been endlessly copied in numerous products, both hardware and software. Needless to say, the MPC to-date has continually enjoyed a long-term presence with producers of virtually every genre ever since the iconic MPC60 was first unveiled in 1988. And contrary to common public perception, these classic samplers are not making a comeback, for they have never left the scene. They are now simply being revisited, revitalized and re-recognized as a rock solid and versatile instrument.

VSTs have become popular because they offer virtually anybody with a computer the chance to “experience” and incorporate into their music the sound of “real” instruments. Curiously, if you comb the endless list of plugins available in the market, the trend has ironically gravitated

I place weight on the MPCs at this point because they have not only defined, but have re-defined SOUND BYTES: Virtual Studio Technology (VST) was developed by Steinberg, and are essentially plugins or “apps” that run within host software programs or Digital Audio Workstations (DAW). They are comprised of a wide variety of applications (both freeware and shareware), that range from analog synth emulators to complete mastering tools.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

With that said, if we muse about the future of music, the rise of the Maschine has set the stage for upcoming USB controllers and perhaps define the “hybrid” standard that is to come. Native Instruments’ creation has been widely praised because it offers one of the tightest integrations between software and hardware, closely mimicking the workflow of using a hardware drum machine/sampler. The Maschine offers producers less looks at their computer’s screen to create music, allowing them to concentrate on being musicians instead of soundtech engineers.

December2011/January2012

“If we muse about the future of music, digital is still in its early stages and is still trying to capture the essence of analog and traditional instruments.”

the standard layout of controllers and subsequent musical machines. A variety of USB controllers (and even iOS and Android apps such as Intua BeatMaker) have adopted the recognizable 4x4 drum pad grid that Akai and Roger Linn (the MPC’s designer) made popular. Some of these reimagined products include Korg’s padKONTROL and Native Instruments’ Maschine.

83

When it comes to recording audio, technology has made one of its greatest impacts—although this issue is still widely and hotly debatable. The argument essentially lies in the sonic character of digital recordings when compared to tape, which those with trained ears will describe as artificial and dull. In fact, numerous VSTs are currently looking back towards analog, and have been emulating its “obsolete” character and quality, such PSP Vintage Warmer, Voxengo’s Analogflux Suite or Waves’ PuigChild compressors. Isn’t it odd that despite the advances in digital audio, an endless amount of VST plugins continually attempt to emulate the character of analog recordings, even going to lengths of mimicking “imperfections” such warmth, saturation, warp and hiss? So where does this all lead? If we muse about the future of music, digital is still in its early stages and is still trying to capture the essence of analog and traditional instruments. We might see manufacturers embark on a journey of reimagining past successes, and either re-creating classic analog instruments or by producing digital hybrids that incorporate the best of what made the sound of the past captivating. It’s all those little imperfections, such as distortion and hiss that gave analog a unique and distinct character. After all, despite digital’s claims to have superior precision and features in audio, clarity does not always equate to quality.

get our take on the latest tracks to hit the market By Paolo Toledo

JAY-Z x KANYE WEST Watch the Throne

JOURNEY Eclipse MCA Music Inc.

DEMI LOVATO Unbroken MCA Music Inc.

There may be no two greater names in 21st century hip-hop than Jay-Z and Kanye West. Individually, their music have carved out monuments and pushed the envelope of what hip-hop is, was, and can become.

To the young and vast MP3-listening audience, the band Journey was first heard when high-school Glee club kids sang the timeless, Don’t Stop Believin. While to a majority of Filipinos, the same band became a familiar name when Arnel Pineda landed a spot as the band’s new vocalist—replacing the incomparable Steve Perry. But to those who have known and followed ‘70s and ‘80s music, the name Journey is tantamount to one of the biggest rock acts to ever enter the scene.

After what has been a tumultuous year for the 19-year old Disney product, Demi Lovato is now proving that she is bent on separating herself from the equally disturbed careers of her pop contemporaries. After a stint in rehab, and the abrupt end of her Disney sitcom, Demi is now on the road to recovery with her new album, “Unbroken.”

Jay-Z has wit and braggadocio within complex rhymes, while Kanye has his own defiant wordplay in sticky punchlines and emotions. Imagine how the world responded when the two announced a collaborative album entitled, “Watch The Throne.” The 12-song joint effort is unlike any mainstream hip-hop album out there—lyrically, musically, and conceptually, that is. The chemistry is untouchable. The production is part evolution, and more revolution. Jay-Z and Kanye have successfully blended their styles that it, surprisingly, does not come off as a clash of overbearing ideas and egos.

December2011/January2012

There may be a few tracks can be seen as “filler” or not up to par to both artists at their best, such as the forgettable Beyonce-featured Lift Off or the awkward That’s My Bitch (but Jay actually saves this song with a killer verse).

84

That being said, every track on this album has its own shine. It may be in their verbal exhibitions or in the way Kanye steered the production alongside the likes of Q-Tip, The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz, and RZA. The album’s great moments are not sparse. No Church In The Wild opens with Frank Ocean providing the hook to a self-actualizing song about spirituality. Then they trade luxury lines and punches in the soulful Otis. On N*ggas In Paris, they take progressive rap to the next level over an eclectic arrangement. And that’s just to name a few. Indeed, Jay-Z and Kanye have fulfilled their roles as rap royalty. They are sitting on top of the hip-hop world, while the rest of us are left to watch their throne. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

After more than two decades of rock & roll, and selling more than 80 million albums, one of the bestselling bands in mainstream music shows no signs of stopping. Now they continue their “journey” with yet another release, this time widening their repertoire and offering something different with “Eclipse.” The first thing about this new album is that it sounds like a new direction for Journey. Without abandoning the radio-friendly rock ballads and catchy hooks that made them into a powerhouse, the music seems to a have a different touch to it. The mood seems heavier, the compositions are harder, and the arrangement is more powerful and exciting. Above all, Schon’s guitars steal the show in a spectacular display of riffs and solos. Some may find a few songs too long or dragging such as Chain Of Love, while some may discover how the band ventured off in tracks like Edge of the Moment or Human Feel. But the fact is, Journey is simply rocking it out like they ever have, and delivering the usual goods in the ballads Tantra, Resonate and She’s A Mystery. With an undercurrent of spirituality running throughout the album, it’s another stamp of what Journey is at its very best—an inspirational power rock band who knows anthems. They may go through small changes along the way, but with “Eclipse,” Journey shows that they are far from the twilight of their career.

What’s actually good about Lovato is that the girl can actually sing. This automatically puts her at an advantage over other pop upstarts. And with the hurdles she has faced, it seems proper that this album is a big step for a girl growing into a stronger woman. Yes “Unbroken” does show more maturity in Lovato—both vocally and in content. Although her pop-rock style has been “adjusted,” the evolution of her ballads allows her voice to take command of the spotlight. It sounds edgier, the themes are more personal, and her range is highlighted. The album may open with an awkward girl still reverting back to ambiguous dance-pop like the disappointing All Night Long (a huge waste of Missy Elliot and Timbaland), or on You’re My Shorty where nothing seems to vary from every other pop stereotype. But fortunately, after a weak start, “Unbroken” seems to pick up (and grow up) just like Demi herself. The following tacks are comprised of powerful and emotional pop ballads such as Fix A Heart where her big notes accentuate a heavy heart, or the lead single Skyscraper which captures a very personal tone and a darker side of Lovato’s style. Though it may be true that Demi Lovato could have ended up like any other Cyrus or Lohan, it seems as if she is mending herself beautifully with this album. Broken no more.

KRATOR Makes an Impact

By Steven Vea

KRATOR is primed to make an impact on the local desktop speaker scene, as it introduces precision sound with great artistic designs at a price that won’t leave a crater in your wallet.

December2011/January2012

KRATOR is the audio brand of KWorld Computer Co. LTd., a Taiwan-based company that was established in 1999. Although a relatively new presence in the scene of audio products, the company won the Taiwan Excellence Award in 2010 for its Neso 01 Legacy Wood series. The said award is a government recognition given to a brand that is “considered to be of the highest standards and [has] strong market potential.”

In a press launch on October 27, Irene Chen, KWorld Computer sales manager for KRATOR, officially launched the brand in the Philippines. Manuel S. Abad, business development manager for KRATOR/Technoline Digital was also present, and guided the demonstration of the speakers to members of the media. One of the products on display was the Neso 04 (N420U05) “Drop to the Nature” series, KRATOR’s entrylevel 2.0 channel USB speakers, which showcases an elegant raindrop-inspired design. Connected Life www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

WDTV Live

My Passport Studio

My Passport for Mac My Book Live

Western Digital recently introduced the concept of a “connected” home and life, with products aimed at enhancing what it means to live mobile. The first concept was the demonstration of a revolutionary storage solution for mobile consumers—their own personal cloud storage in the form of the MyBook Live. All users have to do is connect this stylishly simple external hard drive to their home network via a wireless router, and can access files wherever they go by using the WD2go and WD2go Pro apps. The apps are compatible with any iOS and Android device, enabling tablet and smartphone users greater mobility, since they can now access their media and documents from anywhere in the world—as long as they have Internet access. The WD2go service isn’t limited to smartphones and tablets. PC and Mac users can use it as well, enabling the ability to work while onthe-go. What makes the MyBook Live stand out against competition is that there are no monthly fees for this personal cloud storage. All users pay for is the hard drive—which allows them instant access to cloud capacities ranging from 1TB to 3TB. Western Digital also unveiled its new wireless streaming media player, the WDTV Live, which instantly turns any television into an Internet TV. Its new, revamped interface grants easy access to users’ media (movies, photos, music, etc.), and also provides popular services that can be quickly accessed with the click of a button. Examples of the services include YouTube, Facebook, Picassa Web Albums and Dailymotion which can all be streamed and viewed directly on your television.

What makes the My Passport Studio versatile is that it features two FireWire 800 ports, which allow users to “daisy chain” or link up to five My Passport Studios together. Each drive can still be accessed individually as separate hard drives, but when they’re combined, it offers users up to 5TB of memory. It additionally has a USB 2.0 port to ensure maximum compatibility for a larger number of users.

Electro-Voice officially launched its Live-X loudspeakers in the Philippines, which guarantee to bring “serious sound” and “serious gear” to the stage. Unveiled to members of the media and dealers in Republiq at Resorts World, the event started with a few words from Mariano Ang Jr., President of EVI Distribution Philippines Inc., who expressed his excitement in introducing quality sound to Philippine shores.

The non-powered speakers consist of 12-inch (ELX112) and 15-inch (ELX115) two-way loudspeakers. These two models feature the same frequency response as its powered siblings: the 12-inch models have a range of 50Hz20kHz, while the 15-inch models have more low end at 44Hz-20kHz.

As one of the fastest growing banks in the Philippines, EastWest Bank gives you more reasons to love them.

The “see places” campaign of EastWest Bank auto loan, along with brand endorser Derek Ramsay, took a road trip to Tagaytay Highlands recently. This is to make sure that everyone gets a taste on places where their vehicles can take them bought from an auto loan at EastWest Bank. “Going on road trips is my way of relaxing, getting to know my land and bonding with my car,” said actor Derek Ramsay. He can drive as far as Banaue up north, Donsol in the south or even Nasugbu in Batangas. That’s why he loves his car; it takes him places he has never seen before and to adventures he has never tried.

Members of the press took the opportunity to chat with EastWest Bank President and CEO Antonio C. Moncupa Jr.

“This is why I believe in EastWest Bank’s auto loan program. It enables the consumer to purchase his dream car and see places too. Of course whenever you avail of a loan, there are some risks involved. But in life, the greatest people take the greatest risks. You have to take risks to reap the rewards in the end. Through EastWest Bank’s Auto Loan program, the consumer can drive up to his dream place—plus more. It offers the fastest turnaround for approval,” he continued, citing how his parents, who have been clients of EastWest Bank since 1994, grew their business. “They worked hard, paid their debts faithfully, and now have around 200 employees. They sent us to good schools and gave us a comfortable life. That would not have happened if they didn’t take the risk” he said. “My passion for sports and cars, working hard, keeping my priorities straight and taking charge of my life is easy with a good financial partner—EastWest Bank,” Derek said.

Canon Marketing Philippines announced that the Pixma MG8270, and MG5370 Wireless Photo All-In-One inkjet photo printers will now support AirPrint wireless printing for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. AirPrint allows users to wirelessly print photos, emails, web pages and other documents without the need to install device drivers, saving time and making for a seamless user experience. AirPrint will be supported by the majority of Canon Pixma inkjet printers launched from this point forward. “Since football is the most popular sport in the world, Suzuki clearly wants to capitalize on this foundation to be able to build a strong pool of young players that will carry the Filipino flag,” said Suzuki Philippines president Satoshi Uchida. He said, “It will be the first time of the Philippines to play a football match since 2005 when it won one match. This year, we are expecting a more stalwart performance and we are hoping for the best.” Out of the 25 athletes that PFF has sent out to exposure training in Gotemba, eight were products of the recently concluded PFF-Suzuki U-23 National Cup—three footballers coming from NCR, three from Negros Occidental and two from Iloilo. Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta is also one with Suzuki Philippines on this vision. “The renewed interest in football on a national level is only the first step in developing this relatively new sport in the country– training comes next, then passion comes in,” says Araneta. He furthers, “We in PFF, appreciates all the efforts of SPH in elevating the sport to higher heights, and we are optimistic all this backing will only merit positive results.”

Boracay Celebrates Gains In Beach Management Program

The Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP), a multisectoral initiative for the protection, sustainability and enhancement of the island’s coastal and marine resources, celebrated its first anniversary last 24 September 2011, with an impressive list of accomplishments in seven priority areas. Following a comprehensive strategy, Malay Mayor John P. Yap recognized the importance of dynamic public-private partnership in achieving tangible improvements after just one year of program implementation. The Boracay Beach Management Council (BBMC) rallied under the call to action, “Para Sa Boracay Ako! For Boracay I Will...”, and reported the following achievements: •Local Governance. With strong leadership and political will, Malay Mayor John P. Yap has pushed for the implementation of the BBMP priority programs. Visitors and residents are reminded to observe municipal ordinances against littering, smoking, extracting sand and pebbles, etc. •Coastal Resources. Regular beach and underwater clean-up drives have been performed by various volunteer groups. Coastal nurseries supply new corals that are transplanted in degraded reef areas. Artificial reef domes, deployed in strategic areas, have encouraged the reemergence of new coral species and provide excellent breeding grounds for many fish varieties. Mangrove growth has been closely monitored. •Watershed. A comprehensive reforestation plan for 260-hectares is in place. For 2011, the target is to reforest 63-hectares with 30,000 seedlings produced from the seedling nursery. During the anniversary celebrations, Mayor Yap launched the Adopt-A-Tree program and distributed some 3,000 seedlings to Boracay students and foresters to be planted in their backyards and school grounds.

While the Wave 2.3 has a laser-finish casing, the Android 2.2 Froyo-powered S7-Slim has a sleek and extremely sophisticated design with an 8 GB internal memory. Both models’ open-source Android platform makes these devices highly customizable.

The Telpad Wave 2.3 and Slim S7 are both offered at a discounted price of Php 5,500, which may be paid in full or in 12- or 24-month installments, upon subscription to any PLDT Telpad plan.

•Water and Waste Water. Access to potable water has reached 96% of households, and the sewage treatment plant has been upgraded for environmentally compliant waste water effluent quality.

Aside from its primary function as a landline, Telpad allows users to access and send messages via e-mails, instant messaging through Yahoo

Whether used as an interactive device or a multimedia gadget, or making unlimited local calls, everything you need is now at home!

•Solid Waste. New equipment and upgraded facilities have made garbage collection and processing more effective.

•Hazard Protection. A Philippine National Red Cross office is now present in Boracay, and emergency response capabilities have been enhanced with trained personnel, new sea patrol craft and upgraded communications equipment. •Information, Education & Communication. The “For Boracay I Will” advocacy generated public awareness and cooperation from various stakeholders, and is now ready to reach out to a wider audience with an expanded campaign themed “Sali Ako Dyan!” For greater social media visibility, a FaceBook page “For Boracay I Will” welcomes posts from the public about their happy memories of Boracay and how to preserve this island paradise for future generations. With its previous experience in the United Nations Development Programme’s Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) framework, Petron played a key role in facilitating the formation of the BBMP. Starting out with a handful of members from the local government units, national government agencies, community organizations, youth groups and the private sector, the Boracay Beach Management Council (BBMC) now counts about 30 proponents. These include: The Municipality of Malay, Aklan; San Miguel Corporation; Petron Corporation; Petron Foundation Inc.; Provincial Government of Aklan; Department of Environment & Natural Resources; Boracay Foundation Inc.; Akelco Boracay; Aklan Provincial Tourism Council; Barangays Balabag, Caticlan, Kabulihan, Manoc-Manoc & Yapak; Boracay Association of Sucba Diving Schools; Boracay Island Hopping Association; Boracay Island Water Company; Boracay Island Special Fire Protection Unit; Boracay Land Transportation Multi-Purpose Cooperative; Boracay Solid Waste Management Team; Boracay Special Tourist Police Office; Boracay Yuppies; Coast Guard Detachment-Boracay; Department of Tourism-Boracay; Islander Boracay; Kiwanis Club of Boracay; Lifeguard Boracay; Malay Auxiliary Police; Malay Farm-C; Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PCCI)Boracay; Rotary Club of Boracay; YES FM 91.1; 605th MARPSTA (Maritime Police); and 61st 1B 31D PA Task Force Boracay.

Microsoft Helps Bring Families Together As part of the campaign, Microsoft conducted a survey on MSN titled, “Families and Technology 2011,” which polled more than 3,700 people in seven countries across Asia. Polling families from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, the survey aimed to capture the many ways in which families incorporate technology into their day-to-day cyber relationships. The distinct trend was that families love their personal gadgets and are enjoying communicating in new ways using technology. Microsoft Philippines is showcasing an entire range of retail products that work seamlessly together, including Windows 7, Microsoft Office and Windows Phone 7 for the Holiday season. With the theme, “It’s a great time to be a family,” Microsoft is demonstrating how technology bridges the technological divide and brings families even closer together. As the holidays draw closer, Microsoft Philippines is treating Filipinos to an early Christmas present with a consumer promotion that gives them the chance to bring their family of four to Singapore or win a brand-new Mitsubishi Montero sport.

“The results of poll show that the popular notion of technology being a purely negative influence on family relationships is a misconception. The increasingly globalized nature of the world economy has no doubt greatly dispersed families far and wide around the region, but Microsoft focus is on delivering technology that makes it easier for families to stay together. Tools like Windows Live Messenger, SkyDrive and Photo Gallery already make it a snap to share updates with your dear ones regularly. And with the growing improvements to video chat capabilities on Windows PCs and Windows Phone 7s, the time when we speak face-to-face on a daily basis is not far away,” said Mae Moreno, Windows Client Product Manager.
