Dyson V11 Absolute Reviewed by Jewel Sta. Ana

Keeping your home neat and tidy isn’t child’s play, it’s endless work. No matter how big your crib, dirt will always find a place to settle. We’ve relied on various tools to aid us in our battle against dust and debris, each promising to get the job done in a matter of minutes. A trusted brand, Dyson has become one of the biggest names in the home appliance market. The brand sent over their latest cordless vacuum, the V11 Absolute for us to test, and we were more than happy to take it for a spin. DESIGN Dyson products are known to be extraordinary, and this holds true for the V11 Absolute. It has a polycarbonate chassis and a transparent shell that exposes the inner parts of the cordless vacuum. Weighing in at almost 3 kg, it boasts a design that looks like a futuristic pistol. It is slightly heavier than its predecessor, so you’re going to want to use both hands to carry it. Up front, it still has the dust canister and a lever for emptying dust and debris. The cyclone unit however, is at the back, together with the vacuum’s filter, a small LCD display, and a mode button. A soft-touch trigger is built into the handle.

HARDWARE An engineering marvel, the Dyson V11 Absolute is powered by the brand’s most powerful digital motor, the new V11 engine, which spins at an amazing 125,000 RPM. Just like the previous models, this vacuum is designed to absorb vibrations, keeping distracting noise down. Its motor, bin, and cyclone are horizontally aligned to better capture large items and fine dust particles as small as 0.3 micron. The machine’s central axis is composed of its fully-sealed filtration system which also expels cleaner air, an acoustically engineered motor, and 14 cyclones. Giving life to the unit is a non-removable, seven-cell nickel cobalt-aluminum battery that allows the vacuum to run up to an hour on a single charge. Replacing the old LED indicator is the LCD display that intelligently reports the status of the vacuum, such as battery level and maintenance messages in real-time. One of the iconic features of Dyson vacuums are the accessories that come with the main unit. It is loaded with several attachments that correspond to specific cleaning needs. The motorized, hightorque cleaning head optimizes its performance to adapt to the surface it detects. For hard floors, there is the soft roller head. Meanwhile, the mini motorized tool is perfect for deep cleaning small areas and upholstery. Small-sized dusting brushes are also available in the package. There’s the mini soft dusting brush, stubborn dirt brush, and combination nozzle for hard-to-reach nooks, as well

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

as a crevice tool for small corners in the sofa, and car interiors. These tools are best when used with the nickel blue metal extension tube.

USER EXPERIENCE It might look overwhelming with its load of accessories but the V11 Absolute is very easy to operate. Just choose a cleaning tool to attach, lock it in, and you’re ready to go. Inside, it has a slightly bigger battery which makes it a bit heavy compared to previous V-series models. It has three new suction modes which can be monitored through its built-in LCD display: Eco for better battery life, Medium for general use, and Boost for an extra burst of power to pick up fine dust particles, as well as pet and human hair. In Boost mode, you get at least 12 minutes of fade-free runtime. Another significant upgrade that the V11 Absolute showcases is the additional digital motor in its high torque cleaner. When it is attached to the tube, it activates Auto mode which automatically adjusts the suction power for carpets or hard floors. At its top are two front gates which allow picking up bigger clumps of dust that would normally just be missed. This is made possible through the vacuum’s Dynamic Load Sensor which monitors brush bar resistance up to 60 times per second. You may also need to better schedule your cleaning time because it usually takes four and a half hours to fully charge the V11 Absolute. As discussed previously, it has an LCD display at the back for better monitoring of system performance. Users may now check notifications, battery status, and the remaining run time of the vacuum, and switch modes by pushing the single toggle below the display. Discharging collected dirt is also made easy through its lever. Just slide the bin forward and push the lever outwards to open the flap and release the captured debris. Stowing and charging of the V11 Absolute is convenient through its wall dock. For storing small accessories, there’s the wand storage clip that can be attached to the docking station.

VALUE Upping the ante further on cleaning, the new Dyson V11 Absolute is a reliable cleaning tool perfect for any home. It has an improved battery life, a built-in

digital LCD display that enhances user experience, and unparalleled performance which justifies its golden price tag. If you’re in for something fancy yet efficient, then this vacuum is a good investment. SPECIFICATIONS: • Weight: 2.97 kg • Engine: Dyson digital motor V11 • Cyclone technology: 14 concentric array cyclones • Filtration: Advanced whole machine filtration system • Bin volume: 0.76 L • Suction power: Up to 185 AW • Battery: Seven-cell, nickel cobalt-aluminum battery • Runtime: Up to 60 minutes • Charge time: 4.5 hours • Design: Cordless • Tools: high torque cleaner head, soft roller cleaner head, mini soft dusting brush, stubborn dirt brush, combination nozzle, crevice tool, mini motorized tool, docking station, wand storage clip, and charger What’s Hot: • Better battery life • Its LCD display upgrade • Super suction power What’s Not: • Heavier than the V10 • Hefty price tag

Linksys MR8300 Gaming Max-Stream Reviewed by Gabriel John Pe

Wireless communication is now the norm. With more and more devices losing the ethernet port, gaming routers with gigabit internet speeds are becoming the next all-important household necessity. Is the Linksys Gaming Maxstream the right gaming router though?

DESIGN The Linksys Gaming Max-Stream’s design differs significantly from the brand’s Velop router design. The Gaming Max Stream harkens back to the good old days of routers with multi-directional antennas. The Gaming Max Stream does however take some styling cues from the minimalist design of the Velop, with a no-frills approach to its form.

HARDWARE The Gaming Max-Stream has four multidirectional antennas which you can adjust to fit your coverage needs at home. On the top is an LED indicator, while at the back are the I/O ports. These ports include an Internet port, power input, USB 3.0 (for memory expansion), and LAN, along with the power switch and reset button.

which made the process more forgiving. Once you have fully set the router up, everything is smooth sailing. The Linksys app also offers easy customization options such as a dedicated bandwidth for gaming, and parental controls. Since the Gaming Max-Stream is a tri-band MU-MIMO router, users can also dedicate which bands will be utilized for which functions. The 2.4 GHz band is perfect for some light browsing. One of the the two 5.0 GHz bands was used as my dedicated gaming connection, while the other was dedicated only for streaming devices (some Roku and Fire Sticks at home) and sometimes my phone. Living in a semi-large house, I found the Gaming Max-stream a little lacking in coverage. It was positioned nicely in our living room, but failed to reach the bathroom on the same floor, some distance away.

One thing to take note of is that the router only has four LAN ports. For the majority of users this won’t be an issue, but it is worth mentioning if you plan to connect five or more devices via LAN cables.

Despite the limited distance, the Gaming MaxStream did offer stable Internet connectivity during my time with it. Paired with the fiber connection at home, it delivered great speeds and reliable internet access.

The Gaming Max-Stream can also function as the lead in a mesh system. By adding additional Velop nodes, you can create a home mesh Wi-Fi system.

VALUE

USER EXPERIENCE Setup for first-time users is really easy, thanks to the Linksys App. However, since we already had a dedicated router at home, I found it hard to bring online without disrupting the current setup we already had. I took a couple of steps here and there, but thankfully the router has an easy reset function

Lenovo Legion Y740 Reviewed by Gabriel Pe

Lenovo has always been a brand that provides great specs for their laptops. Their latest flagship gaming laptop, the Lenovo Legion Y740 is no exception. With its great looks and killer specs, should this laptop be your next gaming partner?

DESIGN When you take the Y740 out of the box you are greeted by a nice metallic finish. Lenovo spared no detail in designing this laptop’s form factor. It has cool RGB lighting thanks to Lenovo’s partnership with Corsair, but it doesn’t go over the top like some other gaming laptops in the market. The keyboard layout needed some time to get used to. I liked the additional multipurpose macro keys on the left, but moving the normal keys slightly to the right messed up my typing way more than I liked. One thing that I also liked is the vast selection of I/O ports Lenovo included on the Y740. On the left you have a USB Type-C port and your audio port. The right hand side houses a single USB Type-A port. The back is home to the majority of the ports; the power input, two USB Type-A, the ethernet port, a full–sized HDMI, a mini display port, and a Kensington lock slot. What’s great about this design is that it declutters the sides of the laptop from any other wires.

HARDWARE The screen of the Legion Y740 is a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display with a 144 Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility. One great hardware addition are powerful speakers made even better with Dolby Audio for superb volume and clarity. The review unit is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8750H, and came with an NVIDIA RTX 2060. Storage-wise it had a 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD with 16 GB of RAM, both of which are upgradable. As part of our review, Lenovo also also sent over their M500 gaming mouse which in itself

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

is one of the best gaming mice I have ever held. It’s light and ergonomic design was perfect for long hours of use.

USER EXPERIENCE The Lenovo Legion Y740 is a gaming laptop at its core. The 8th generation Intel Core i7 and NVIDIA RTX 2060 could handle all the Triple A games thrown at it. We ran Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and it averaged 46 fps, while The Witcher 3 averaged at 61 fps. Lighter games such as Rainbow Six Siege averaged more than 150 fps. The major downside of the Y740 is its battery life. Using the laptop at max settings when gaming only yielded about an hour of play time, while using the laptop for minimal tasks such as word processing and Internet browsing only delivered two hours of use. The laptop would have been ultraportable as it weighs only 2.2 kg, but the huge power brick holds it back, weighing more than the laptop itself. The positive aspect of the huge charger is its fast charge capability. At 230 W, the charger can fill the 57 W battery in as fast as 45 minutes.

SPECIFICATIONS: • Display: 15.6-inch Full HD IPS with 144 Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-Sync • Processor: Intel Core i7-8750H @ 2.20 GHz (can be boosted up to 4.10 GHz) • Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 2060 • Storage: 1TB HDD, 256 GB NVMe SSD • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 • Connectivity: Killer WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1 • Ports: USB-C, 1x USB 3.1 Gen 2, 2x USB 3.1 Gen 1, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, RJ45 Ethernet, 3.5 mm audio jack, Kensington Lock Slot • Weigh: 2.2 kg (5.1 pounds) What’s Hot: • Great design • Great Specs • 144 Hz screen refresh rate and NVIDIA

What’s Not: • Keyboard layout needs a lot of getting used to • Poor battery life

What’s great about the Y740 is its heat management. After a day of continuous gaming, the keyboard area remained relatively cool to the touch. Fan noise is also one of the Y740’s strong suits, you could hear them when the laptop was in full swing, but it wasn’t deafening. All in all, I enjoyed my time with the Legion Y740. The laptop was perfectly capable and more than powerful enough to satisfy hardcore and casual gamers alike.

VALUE Coming in at PHP 119,995, the Lenovo Legion Y740 has great specs and a fantastic build. Despite the battery, the Y740 is still one of the laptops to consider if you’re in the market for a gaming laptop.

BOTTOMLINE The Y740 is one solid gaming laptop.

Realme 5 Reviewed by Jewel Sta. Ana

Quad cameras have been dominating smartphones of late. Improvements in mobile photography, most especially shooting subjects in low-light environments, pushed brands to offer new innovations on their camera sensors. However, these usually come at a price. Realme saw this as an opportunity to offer. And the best part is, it’s affordable and stylish.

DESIGN

USER EXPERIENCE

Updating its aesthetic from its predecessor, the Realme 5 showcases a glossy, back crystal pattern when subjected to light at various angles. It still comes with a polycarbonate shell with a matte midframe that doesn’t feel flimsy, and weighs 200 G. Thanks to its internal battery, it feels solid. We got our review unit in a stunning crystal violet.

The Realme 5 has a lot in store in the camera department. Combining wide, ultrawide, macro, and depth cameras, the smartphone produces richer and sharper photos in full color, even in low light conditions through its Nightscape mode. Should you want to make the colors lively, you can activate Chroma Boost. Although noise and overblown light can sometimes be visible, it doesn’t affect the appearance of the photos too negatively. It’s also a better daylight shooter that delivers natural-looking selfies thanks to AI beauty mode on. It is also capable of shooting 4K videos at 30 fps and 240 fps slow-motion clips.

On its top-left rear corner lies not two, but four camera sensors arranged vertically, with an LED flash. Across the cameras is the fingerprint sensor that unlocks and wakes the smartphone, while Realme’s branding is printed vertically at the bottom in silver. Volume rockers and the Dual SIM tray are located on the left. Meanwhile, the power button can be found on the right side of the device. The micro-USB port, 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, and single speaker all sit at the bottom. At the top is a waterdrop notch where the 13 MP front camera and a small earpiece are located.

HARDWARE Coming in with a larger profile compared to its predecessor, the Realme 5 boasts a 6.5-inch HD+ display and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection from scratches and dents. Even the waterdrop notch at the top part of the screen is made 30 percent smaller to maximize the screen size. Its fingerprint scanner is ergonomically placed at the back beside its rear quad camera setup. Speaking of cameras, the smartphone sports a 12 MP wide + 8 MP ultrawide + 2 MP macro + 2 MP depth sensors with up to 5x digital zoom that complement each other to produce vibrant and detailed photos from dusk until dawn. It also has a 13 MP front camera that shoots natural-looking portraits and is capable of shooting 4K videos. Powered by a Snapdragon 665 SoC, it has 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. It’s also equipped with a massive 5,000 mAh battery and can handle light splashes of water.

OCTOBER 2019

An overlay atop Android Pie, the Realme 5 runs on the brand’s latest ColorOS 6.0.1 which offers close to the stock Android experience right off the bat. A plethora of pre-installed apps like the ORoaming and the calculator now have a flatter, cleaner look. Instead of rounded square toggles, the smartphone now has button-like, round toggles. It retains the responsive facial unlock and fingerprint scanner from previous versions of the device. Among new features include hotspot management for controlling, connected devices and usage limits, as well as private space for storing important media files that can be secured via fingerprint or password.

compelling reasons to upgrade. Its bulky form, as well as lack of FHD+ display and fast charging technology, may disappoint consumers, but at its price point, it is still worth spending on. SPECIFICATIONS: • Display: 6.5-inch waterdrop HD+ display (with 82% screen-to-body ratio, with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection) • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 octa-core • RAM: 4 GB • Memory: 128 GB (expandable up to 256 GB via microSD slot) • Cameras: 12 MP wide + 8 MP ultrawide + 2 MP macro + 2 MP depth rear quad cameras, 13 MP front camera • OS: ColorOS 6.0.1 based on Android 9 • Battery: 5,000 mAh • Features: AI Face Unlock, Splashproof, Rear Fingerprint Scanner, Dual SIM card slot What’s Hot: • Versatile quad cameras • Good battery life • Delivers decent performance What’s Not: • Slightly hefty • Doesn’t support VOOC charging

The Realme 5 performs well in gaming, although I experienced minor frame drops when playing PUBG Mobile with balanced graphics settings. It doesn’t overheat even with extended play. The device also doesn’t disappoint when it comes to multitasking. It may weigh more and feel bulky, but the Realme 5 is a winner when it comes to battery life. It can last nearly two days with light to medium use. Standard charging does take a little more time than quick-charging devices, but is an acceptable trade-off for better value.

VALUE A significant upgrade from its predecessor, the Realme 5 offers a better processor, longer battery life, and new quad cameras all of which are

Igloohome Smart Keybox 2 Reviewed by Maribelle Alba

I’m sure all of us have, at one time or another, been forced to make special arrangements in order to physically hand over keys to your home, car, locker, desk, etc. Either you set a time and place for the exchange, or you designate a trusted representative or caretaker to hold the keys for you. With its Keybox 2, igloohome addresses this issue with a smart solution. DESIGN The Smart Keybox 2 looks like a large, black lock. Made of zinc alloy and hardened carbon steel, it is reassuringly big and heavy. Once securely shackled to a knob or fence or bolted to a wall, you’re sure that it’s not going to be easily carried off by human or natural elements. It is IP65 certified, so a little rain or dust will not damage it. The front part of the keybox is hinged and opens up to provide access to an inner storage area which, out of the box, contains a slim shackle, mounting screws and seal rings, screw anchors, rubber studs, and spare screws for the battery cover. The battery well for four AAA batteries is located on the inner side of the front cover. In case the batteries go dead, there is an emergency jumpstart pin for a 9V battery at the lower part of the lock.

HARDWARE The Smart Keybox 2 has Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and can be unlocked with the igloohome app, provided you are within range. However, what makes it—and other igloohome devices—stand out is its proprietary AlgoPIN technology which generates OTPs (one-time-passwords) that work even without a WiFi connection. This makes the keybox an ideal solution for areas without reliable WiFi such as a remote farm house, beach property, etc.

USER EXPERIENCE Right out of the box, the first thing you need to do is put in four AAA alkaline batteries (not included in the package) into the battery well located on the inner part of the lock cover. You also need to download the igloohome app onto your smartphone. Once the keybox is powered, you can start the pairing process following the instructions in the user guide. Once configured, the keybox can be unlocked via Bluetooth through your smartphone app, or by keying in the PIN code and pressing the unlock icon. To lock, just close the keybox tightly and wait for the long beep confirming that it’s securely latched.

28

OCTOBER 2019

To give access to other people, you can assign PIN codes that can be for one-time use, limited duration use, or for permanent use. The PIN needs to be “activated” within 6 hours for one-time use, and 24 hours for permanent/duration use. Otherwise the PIN expires and becomes inactive. A Bluetooth key can also be created to give other users mobile access to the keybox. The users will need to have the igloohome app to receive the Bluetooth key, and must accept it within 1-hour of generation before it expires. If you’re using the keybox at an Airbnb property, you can actually link it your Airbnb and igloohome accounts, and your PIN codes can be automatically generated and given to your guests. Access logs let you know who opened the keybox and when. The storage space inside the keybox has room for up to 6 physical keys or 7 keycards, and you can probably throw in a small note or SIM card in there. Personally, I hate having to carry around keys and have an RFID sticker on my phone to open my front and side doors which have digital locks. I still do have physical keys for my bedroom and walk-in closet which I keep locked as that’s where I have my valuables. The keybox is a perfect solution to my key aversion. I can mount it somewhere accessible and just leave my physical keys in there—no need to bring them along with me. When I get home, I open up the keybox and take out the keys I need. At the same time, I can create PINs and assign them to family members in case they need access, while being informed every time the keybox is opened.

what you are paying for is the convenience of being able to handover keys to guests without the hassle of being physically present, with the added assurance of its security features.

SPECIFICATIONS: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Material: zinc alloy, ABS, hardened steel Color: black Power: 4 x AAA alkaline batteries Emergency Power: DC9V alkaline battery Dimensions (WxHxT): 114 x 116 x 38 mm Inner Storage Space (WxHxT): 108 x 75 x 16 mm Weight: 1 kg Shackle Strength: 305 kg force Unlock Mechanism: Bluetooth, PIN code Wireless Protocol: Bluetooth 4.0 Certification: IP65 (splash and dust resistant) Compatibility: iOS 11 and above; Android 6 and above

What’s Hot: • Works offline • Keeps access logs What’s Not: • Bulky • Not weather-proof • Quite pricey

I also like the decoy feature where you can enter up to 8 random digits before the actual PIN code to confuse whoever might be watching. The four AAA batteries are supposed to be good for up to a year, and in case the power runs down, you can use a 9V alkaline battery to jumpstart and open the keybox.

VALUE The Smart Keybox 2 can be bought for around Php 14,500 (discounted) to Php 16,000 (SRP)—a bit steep for what is essentially a key holder. But

Mobile Phone Lockdown Keeping your most important device safe

Words by Ren Alcantara

In this age of hyperconnectivity, our phones serve as the key to unlock a whole world of possibilities. Our finances, access to a myriad of accounts, and even identity information are so closely tied with our phones, that it’s an extremely tempting target for people with malintent. Given that we use our phones much more than any other piece of technology we own, we should take the time to keep this critical device and, therefore, ourselves, safe.

Physical Theft This is as straightforward as it gets. When it comes to tech security, once the bad guy has physical access to your device, it’s usually game over. At best, you’ve lost a pricey device forever. At worst, and depending on how determined the attacker is, all the data on the device including the sign-ins and sensitive info can be made accessible, and you’ll have to go through the whole process of re-securing everything before anything bad happens. Losing a phone isn’t fun, but the real problem is if the thief gets access to your data. The solution for this is thankfully quite simple. Aside from the obvious step of always keeping your device somewhere it can’t just be picked up and locking it with a PIN, there are a few things you can do to make sure the unfortunate occurrence of losing your phone is nothing more than an inconvenience. Android and iOS both have built-in ways of tracking your device. If you think you might just have left your device somewhere, Android Device Manager and Find My iPhone can be used to track down the missing device as long as it has a connection to the Internet. Hopefully, it just tumbled out of your pocket, and you can get it back with no problem. There are even functions that allow you to make the phone ring to help narrow your search down if you’re in the area but unable to see the device. Should the device be offline shortly after you lost it, and you know it had power and an internet connection, that might mean that it has been taken, and whoever found it has little intention of reuniting you with your device. This isn’t a great spot to be in. Should this happen to me, I do have a plan in place. The same Android Device Manager and Find My iPhone services allow you to do a remote wipe of the device. You still lose 30

OCTOBER 2019

your phone, but at least that’s about as bad as the situation will get. The thief may still be able to use your phone (unless it’s an iPhone), but at least your data will remain inaccessible. With everything on the cloud, you probably won’t feel too bad about that anyway. It’s very much a nuclear option, so think about your decision before you let it rip.

Malware Phones are essentially computers, and computers will always be a target for all sorts of malware. Malware can come in many shapes and forms, from annoyances that pop ads up or hijack your browser, all the way to more sinister programs that quietly and secretly steal information in the background without letting you know. Once again, it’s your information that’s most at risk and what’s worse, it’s possible you won’t know there’s anything wrong until the damage has been done. Protecting yourself from the threat of malware takes a change in behavior and a little help from anti-malware programs. Firstly, don’t go installing dubious programs on your device. Google and Apple do a reasonably good job of filtering available apps in their respective app stores, but it’s not foolproof. When you install apps, take a look at the permissions the app requires of your device. If something doesn’t line up, say a game that has no need for camera access asks for it, consider a different app. For Android users, disable the ability and disable the ability to install apps from unknown sources unless you absolutely know what you’re doing. It also makes perfect sense to stay away from questionable websites, and be careful about links and QR codes that you come across—they don’t always lead to trustworthy destinations. Mobile anti-malware programs are also not a bad idea. Sure they use up some system resources,

but it’s worth it for the peace of mind. Do a quick internet search, find a reputable one that suits your needs and budget, and go with that. On a related note, keep a backup of your data online with your phone’s built-in backup utility. Should you need to wipe your device to try and rid it of any malware, this will save you the inconvenience. just know that you might be restoring malware along with the good data, so anti-malware apps are still necessary in this case.

Wi-Fi related Attacks Cyber criminals know that users generally don’t want to blow through all their mobile data, and will want to connect to free Wi-Fi when available. This gives them two ways to attack: first, connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi in public places puts users at risk, with bad guys being able to intercept information going through. Secondly, they can themselves set up a convincingly realistic free Wi-Fi access point, one that requires the user to register an email and password, and then take those usernames and passwords knowing that most people recycle that information for many different digital logins. Once again, your data can be compromised when the baddies log in to your various accounts and take whatever they want. You can get around this by not connecting to public hotspots unless absolutely necessary. If you really need to, don’t do anything that will reveal important login info, such as online purchases, banking, or anything of the sort. Should you need to log in, don’t use a password that keeps your other accounts secure. If it does turn out that the free Wi-Fi was out to get your info, you’ll at least not reveal a username and password combination that unlocks anything else. These are just some of the threats present in the mobile space. Be smart, be careful, and use the technology available, so that your tech continues to work for you, and not someone else.

Protecting Your Online Data From social media accounts and much more Words by Jewel Sta. Ana As people living in the digital age, we are more prone to online threats that jeopardize our security. With a single wrong tap or click, cybercriminals can gain access to someone’s personal and financial information which can then be used to access online bank accounts or worse, steal an identity. Without prevention, these threats, can get out of hand and cause severe inconvenience. Awareness is the first step to staying safe. We list some common personal online threats that you may encounter and solutions to ensure data security at all times. Phishing schemes The most common on the list, Phishing is defined as a fraudulent method of obtaining sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, or credit card details using deceptive emails and websites. At first glance, these websites look exactly like the original ones, which is why so many people fall for it. Most of the proponents of these malicious sites copy the logo, name, and format of the website of a financial institution such as a bank, leading to a number of online security breaches. Once they have the user’s personal data, they can easily log in and gain access not only to your bank account but possibly your other online accounts as well, as users tend to reuse emails and passwords. Phishing attacks are also usually done on service providers with large user bases such as e-commerce and social media websites. To avoid getting caught up on this modus, always check the legitimacy of the website. Official websites mostly use data encryption, showing a padlock icon on the address bar and commonly begins with https://. Checking the source of the information from your email is also a good idea. Don’t carelessly click on hyperlinks attached to emails, as those might direct you to fraudulent websites, and do not disclose confidential information via email or messaging apps.

way, both types run without permission from the user and can collect your data including browser history, IP address, search queries, and web pages visited. The data can then be used for profiling in direct marketing, and may make your computer slow and unstable. Being cautious about opening websites on the Internet is a good habit to develop. If you’re downloading any freeware or shareware, make sure that you access these programs from trustworthy and reputable websites to avoid infection. It is also highly recommended to update smartphones, tablets, and laptops regularly and avoid clicking on any notices or ads while browsing. Hacking Whether you’re a Hollywood celebrity or an ordinary netizen, you can be a hacker’s victim. Hacking is a very technical and broad term that refers to unauthorized access to and control of a mobile device, computer, or network. Usually driven by personal motives, or simply because they can, hackers aren’t just rogue programmers who are skilled at modifying computer hardware and software. They can use psychology to their advantage and trick their target into clicking a link to a malicious website, or providing personal data.

Adware

Sometimes, simple things like forgetting to logout of your email or social media accounts on shared devices may also lead to hacking.

It’s annoying when an online ad pops onto your screen, but it’s more irritating when it keeps on buzzing and bombarding your otherwise well-behaved browser. If it keeps on happening, chances are your device is infected with Adware, an unwanted software designed to throw ads up on your screen while peacefully browsing the web. Why does it even exist? The simple answer is the revenue generated for developers by showing ads.

Hacking usually occurs with malicious intent. Most of the time, it is done for corporate espionage and criminal financial gain, to tarnish someone’s reputation, steal an indentity, defraud banking systems, or make confidential information public. When your personal data gets in to the wrong hands, your safety and privacy are in danger.

There are two main ways by which adware sneaks into your system: it’s either embedded on the free downloaded program you recently installed, or linked from website infected with adware. Either www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

One way to steer clear from this threat is to log out of all social media, email, and online banking accounts after using shared devices. It is also helpful to choose strong and discrete passwords for your various online accounts. Activating

two-factor authentication and using a password manager adds another layer of security, making it harder for the attackers to access personal accounts. Cyberstalking When stalking is done online and involves the repeated use of the Internet or other electronic means to harass, intimidate, or frighten a person or a group, it is considered Cyberstalking. It’s quite different and much more sinister from what we do to our crush’s social media accounts. The former usually includes false accusations, derogatory comments, and threats. Most suspects create another identity through social media sites using fake names, photos, and locations before approaching and making contact with the target. Once they have successfully followed and befriended the victim online, they can now monitor their target’s physical and online activities. This puts easy targets into physical peril. The next thing you know, someone has broken into your home, stolen your belongings or worse. As with many things in life, it’s better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to cyberstalking. As much as possible, avoid disclosing personal information with strangers online. If someone adds you on your social media accounts, check their profile first before tapping the approve button. Maintaining good digital hygiene would also help in keeping your account private. Keep your profile low-key without revealing sensitive information about your whereabouts, out-of-town trips, address, mobile and phone number, and birthday. As much as possible, do not use your full name on your accounts. Nowadays, being vigilant doesn’t just apply to the physical environment. Always keep in mind that as digital natives, having an awareness of the dark threats on the web is not just an edge, it also brings responsibility because at the end of the day, you are in charge of your own safety. Prevention would always be the best first defense. OCTOBER 2019

Travel Security

Staying safe away from home Words by Gabriel John Pe Traveling has become easier in the last decade as advances in technology have made the experience safer and cheaper for people. However, with more people moving, security risks have also increased. Here are some risks and how to avoid them. Card skimming Card skimming and other related fraud is the most common complaint when traveling abroad. This kind of scam usually happens in developing countries where there’s a steady stream of tourists. Card skimmers use a skimming device to copy the data from your cards, so physical access is necessary for this to happen. To avoid being a victim, refrain from using your card in suspicious-looking establishments and areas. Also be alert when paying with your credit card, and don’t let it leave your sight while paying. Another method of avoiding credit card skimmers is by using your e-wallets. Most e-wallets only use debit which means you’ll only lose the amount loaded into your account. Despite most retailers now accepting e-wallets, there are still those who prefer credit cards, so search for e-wallet providers that have physical cards linked to the user’s account for both convenience and safety. Another sure-fire solution when travelling is to pay in cash. Carrying cash around does sound scary, but keeping your cards out of the equation completely should keep them safe. Theft or Physical Attacks We’ve all heard the horror stories. A friend of a friend is enjoying their vacation when a snatcher takes their phone and makes a run for it, or a robber threatens them at gunpoint. Physical threats cannot be completely eradicated. Most of these incidents occur in cities with large populations and dodgy neighborhoods, so plan ahead and stay away from areas that are known to be prone to crime, and wherever you are, stay away from secluded areas. The best way to avoid these petty crimes is usually by moving in groups. Tours are a great way to be with a group whether you are travelling alone or with friends. Avoid showing off your wealth. When travelling, try to limit showing your wallet and other valuables as much as possible. Bringing an extra dummy wallet where you can keep a small amount of cash for your souvenirs and other fees is a more roundabout, but equally effective way to foil would-be petty thieves. Manufacturers also

32

OCTOBER 2019

offer reinforced, slash-proof bags that can resist a quick swipe from a pickpocket’s blade, and have cable-strengthened shoulder straps to fend of the dreaded cut-and-run. Apart from securing your valuables, it also helps to do some research before heading somewhere. Knowing where local authorities are located and how to reach them is important when instances of physical threats are common. When travelling to another country, take note of the location of your home country’s embassy. That will be most helpful when dealing with stolen documents such as passports and identification cards. ATM Scams While not entirely criminal by definition, something to be aware of when traveling overseas is the common ATM. Worldwide, cash is still the most accepted form of payment, particularly for more far-flung areas or small tourist attractions. If you’re overseas and withdrawing from your home bank account, be aware that foreign banks will usually add a surcharge for the international transaction. This can range from a reasonable few bucks, to an exorbitant amount that may at times be greater than what you’re trying to withdraw in the first place. There’s also the matter of the conversion rate, which varies daily, and should be something you should look at before completing the withdrawal. More unscrupulous banks will try to get you by charging an unreasonable transaction fee, providing much lower than average exchange rates, and forcing you to take out large sums of money at a time through fixed withdrawal amounts in a predetermined menu. This is unfair, and takes advantage of tourists specifically. The best idea is to get enough cash before you head out, and if the need arises, just be aware of the charges and tricks banks attempt to bleed you dry. There’s nothing wrong with using an ATM overseas, just as long as you know what you’re getting into. Travel is a great way to broaden your horizons and experience different cultures. It’s a great time to be able to do so, and to have the best trip possible, take the time to look at the threats, and learn how to avoid them.

Going beyond her limits Words by Jewel Sta. Ana

Bubbly, sweet, and simple: these are the words that embody Maine Mendoza. She has come a long way since her TV debut as Yaya Dub, the amusing personal assistant of Lola Nidora on Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye. Long before she became a household name however, she knew she was destined for greatness.

Maine is the epitome of the modern Filipina: goal-oriented, self-aware, and thinks out of the box. For her, Yaya Dub is an alter-ego that reveals herself when she’s with people she loves. “They are not totally different. It’s just only a few can see the real Yaya Dub in Maine, “she says. Off-stage, Maine is more of the serious type. “Minsan napapagkamalang masungit because of my quiet and timid nature. But I can be fun and bubbly too, at times,” she shares. Whether on-screen or privately, she knows how to bring out the fun in dull and mundane days by trying to make the atmosphere lively, and doing things that will make other people happy. Take as proof her comedic Dubsmash videos which led her to stardom. She has a lot of gems in her crown and one of them is being an entrepreneur: the 24-year-old actress owns a fast-food franchise in Bulacan. Due in part to having a bachelor’s degree in hotel, restaurant, and institution management, with a major in culinary arts, she has been able to manage her business flawlessly, though her parents and older sister are always there to give her a hand. Because of her vivacious personality, she also has been a sought-after celebrity endorser of top global brands in the country including a fast-food chain, a petroleum company, and a local lifestyle brand. She continues to break new ground as she achieved other milestones this year with her second lipstick collaboration with makeup giant MAC, as well as being Vivo’s newest brand ambassador. Maine, more than being a top-rated TV personality, is also noted for her philanthropy. Among these are her addressing the country’s need for education,

the cause of the Lumads in Mindanao, and samesex marriage. But among all the hats she wears—TV personality, entrepreneur, endorser, social media influencer, and a loving daughter and sister— she loves being known as a TV host. “Some might underestimate me, since I am a noontime variety show host and they might think ‘parang hindi naman seryosohang hosting!’ but the thing is, it is still hosting.” She acknowledges that facing hundreds of people every day through the TV can be tedious, particularly in the local industry. “You have to keep them entertained any way you can,” she says. Maine also adds: “I wish people would understand and appreciate what it takes to keep a show interesting and entertaining. I also hope they do not deride those who truly enjoy watching noontime variety shows.” As a social media darling, Maine has a well-curated Instagram account. Apart from her established aesthetic, fans always look forward to her funny IG stories. Having a smartphone with a good camera is important for her because she can capture every bit of her best and special memories. “That’s why I love how my Vivo V17 Pro effortlessly captures special moments through its amazing camera features. Imagine having a phone with four cameras on the back and two in front, all with different features! My favorite is the super wide-angle lens which is perfect for taking group photos and capturing expansive landscapes,” she exclaims. With her new phone, she’s more excited to travel and conquer the world. Can’t get enough of Maine? You can catch her on the silver screen as she stars with Carlo Aquino on her upcoming romantic-comedy movie Isa Pa with Feelings.

MOBILITY

Suzuki Jimny GLX 4AT Reviewed and photos by Maribelle Alba

Honestly, I’ve been wanting to drive the Suzuki Jimny for years! Back in the day, my friends and I had so many fun adventures aboard its siblings, the Beaver and Samurai, so coming home to an all-new Jimny in my driveway was a thrill. DESIGN The Suzuki Jimny is a small utility vehicle, designed to navigate narrow trails and difficult terrain inaccessible to larger vehicles. Its square, boxy body is purely utilitarian, with little regard for aerodynamic curves. Instead, practical design elements were taken into careful consideration, such as the large molded bumpers to guard against chips and scratches, the drip rail that prevents water from dripping off the roof, the large LED headlights with washers to ensure visibility even when driving through muddy tracks.

40

OCTOBER 2019

Retaining its classic looks, the all-new Jimny is instantly recognizable as a “jeep” with its iconic round headlights and separate turn indicators, as well as the vertical front grille and clamshell bonnet. The two-tone version that I got as a test unit had a black roof atop a solid kinetic yellow body, exuding both toughness and fun.

designed to provide better shock absorption as well as free body movement in rough conditions. Seating is for two adults in the front bucket seats and two adults in the rear bench seats. The premium GLX variant has a leather steering wheel with audio controls and cruise control for just that teeny-weeny bit of luxe.

The interior is spare and straightforward, consisting only of essential controls. The dashboard is similarly boxy, and its horizontal lines are supposed to help orient the driver in uneven terrain. The seats have also been

at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The suspension system, intended to tackle rough driving conditions, consists of long-stroke 3-link rigid axles with coil springs on both front and rear. Front brakes are solid discs, while rear brakes are leading/trailing drum brakes. The audio system is a large 9-inch multimedia touch screen with four speakers. It also has a clinometer display for pitching, rolling, compass, barometric pressure, and altitude. An offline navigation system offers driving directions without traffic information. It has USB and Bluetooth connectivity, plus Android Mirror Link. Reverse parking sensors and a reverse parking camera make backing out of tight spots easy. The climate control system is an upscale automatic air conditioner with heater as well as pollen filter. The Jimny features hill descent control, hill hold control, and brake LSD traction control—all intended to improve driver control and safety, particularly in challenging driving conditions. Safety features on the GLX 4AT include 3-point seatbelts, dual front airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, LED high-mount stop lamp, and immobilizer, among others.

USER EXPERIENCE The Jimny’s part-time 4WD system gives you the best of both worlds. When driving in the metro or on well-paved highways, 2WD delivers better cornering and fuel efficiency. For off-road driving, you can switch to 4WD for better traction and grip. And, when faced with really rough terrain, the 4L mode gives you extra pulling power. Where I live, there are a few rough spots that the Jimny handled gamely and confidently, even through some deep gutters made worse by the recent heavy rains. I did not have great expectations about the Jimny’s riding comfort as it is intended for off-road use, but the ride was not as harsh and bouncy as expected. In fact, on smooth city roads, handling was about the same as other utility vehicles I’d driven. Looking for some off-road locations to test the Jimny’s capabilities, we wandered into a really tight, narrow trail where we appreciated its small turning radius. It would have been a much more difficult getaway on a larger vehicle. We also took the Jimny to the mall to shop for groceries, only to realize hat this was not a family car. There is literally no trunk space

and we needed to fold down the rear seats to accommodate a week’s worth of household supplies. Nevertheless, with its large rear door opening and fold-down rear seats, I can imagine field workers stowing large tools or machine parts at the back to deliver to some remote work site. Because of its spare interior, the window switches are located in the front center console below the aircon controls—something one needs to get used to. Also, doors don’t lock automatically, so you’ll have to remember to lock your door each time you get rolling. And lastly, while the 9-inch display is large and bright, it can be a distraction when driving at night.

VALUE The all-new Suzuki Jimny starts at PHP 975,000 for the base GL 5MT variant, PHP 1,035,000 for the GL 4AT, and PHP 1,085,000 for the GLX 4AT. There’s a PHP 10,000 premium on the two-tone GLX 4AT model, which is priced at PHP 1,095,000. Considering that the Suzuki Jimny is built to be a real off-roader, these are unbeatable price points especially for enterprises that require a tough workhorse with a reputation for reliable performance.

What’s Hot: - One of a kind - Real off-roader

What’s Not: - No cargo space (unless you fold the rear seats)

Bottomline: There’s nothing like the Suzuki Jimny, a tough little workhorse that’s also appealing and appropriately specced for its intended use.

A

uto Nation Group (ANG), Philippine importer and distributor of Mercedes-Benz, has launched the second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA. “As a four-door coupé, the new CLA intrigues with its puristic, seductive profile and brings the design DNA of ‘sensual purity’ to a new level. It is compelling for its perfect proportions, which are very close to the initial design sketches: a long, stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide track with flared wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a pronounced ‘Coke-bottle shoulder’,” says Daimler AG chief design officer Gorden Wagener.

The new Mercedes Benz CLA is sleeker, sportier, and techier SLEEKER: Emotional Design

SLEEKER: Exciting Interiors

In the Mercedes-Benz front wheel drive family, the new CLA possesses the most exciting exterior with its coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes. With this, it does justice to its predecessor’s status as a design icon.

Inside the new CLA, all elements are arranged according to the overarching design themes of ‘high tech’ and ‘youthful avant-garde’ from the leather multi-function steering wheel and new touchpad to the Artico-leather seats and other design enhancements in the dashboard. The driver seat can be electrically adjusted with three memory functions.

The new CLA sports LED high-performance headlamps with daylight running lamps, which complements the low-slung bonnet and the diamond grill. The new narrow-designed tail lamps and the number plate housed in the bumper on the rear emphasize the width of the new CLA. The car thus appears flatter, sportier, and has an especially good presence on the road with its 18-inch multi-spoke light alloy wheels. The combination of the long, stretched entry line above the windows and frameless doors give the CLA Coupé its unmistakable sporty and elegant character.

The new CLA has tangibly more space at many spots in the interior. At the front, for example, headroom has increased by 17 mm and elbow room by 35 mm. Thanks to a wider opening (+262 mm), the boot compartment is now more convenient to load unto than the predecessor model. For more space and storage, the CLA offers comfort seats with seat cushions adjustable for depth and angle, with a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat backrest.

SPORTIER: Sporty and Efficient Powertrain The new CLA delivers power and performance with its in-line 4-cylinder engine mated with a 7G-DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing an output and torque of 136 hp and 200 Nm, respectively. To further enhance the driving experience, the new CLA comes equipped with Dynamic Select that allows the driver to shift between various driving modes that suit their driving style, the weather, and road conditions. The CLA is also equipped with a comfort suspension package and direct steering assist.

SAFER: World-Class Safety Features Safety is a priority with the new CLA, helping to give peace of mind to its driver and passengers. Included in its roster of driver-assist and safety features are active parking assist with rear-view camera, active brake assist, adaptive brake lights, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program (EPS), acceleration skid control, and hill-start assist among others. It’s also equipped with a pedestrian protection active bonnet as well as multiple airbags for the driver and front passenger including window bags and knee bag for the driver.

TECHIER: Mercedes-Benz User Experience As seen in the latest models of the A-Class and the GLE, the new CLA showcases the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with two 7- inch digital screens for the instrument cluster and the media display. At the heart of the MBUX system is a highly intelligent virtual assistant activated by pressing a button in the steering wheel or by simply saying “Hey Mercedes” from anywhere in the cabin. It caters to voice commands to attend to infotainment functions such as destination input, phone call, music selection, and climate control. MBUX comes with a natural speech recognition program that helps it to recognize and understand nearly all sentences from the fields of multimedia and vehicle operation.

10th-generation Honda Accord features advanced technologies and more luxurious design Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), Honda’s automobile unit in the Philippines recently debuted the all-new 10th generation Honda Accord. Honda’s newest luxury sedan offers a premium and bolder design, a more powerful 1.5-liter VTEC TURBO engine, and the advanced Honda SENSING safety technology. EXTERIOR Built on a new platform, the all-new Accord boasts a streamlined yet elegant overall exterior profile thanks to its now wider stance, lower roofline and a dramatically longer and lower hood. Upfront, Honda’s signature chrome wing grille and streamlined wing-shaped full-LED headlights with auto leveling and high beam features highlight the bold and upright front fascia. Combined with chiseled hood and LED fog lights, the new Accord gets a very distinctive and aggressive presence on the road. Continuing to the side, a lower roofline and sharp upswept body lines create a stylish yet dynamic appeal. Strong wheel arches and concave door panels further emphasize its character lines. Aggressive, cleverly designed and engineered 18-inch alloy wheels complete the commanding look. Honda adopted a laser brazing welding process for joining the roof and the side panels, creating a cleaner exterior appearance with no need for a garnish over the rain channels. INTERIOR Inside, the Accord boasts a larger, more premium and tech-savvy interior. To elevate the overall premium feeling of the cabin, the new Accord is fitted with premium, high-quality, and soft touch materials with tasteful application of leather, wood, and metal accents throughout. Its wider body and longer wheelbase also contribute to improved cabin space. This is noticeable at the rear cabin where an additional 48 mm of legroom now provides substantial comfort for the rear passengers. In addition, it also gets an improved cargo capacity with 573 liters of trunk space. ADVANCED FEATURES The new Accord implements an array of advanced technologies comparable to those found in vehicles from a class higher. For the main instrumentation, the Accord comes equipped with a 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display (left side) that can present a wide range of information and a speedometer on the right side of the instrument package, in an upscale yet easy-to-read layout. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Its new display audio system is one of the most advanced systems offered by Honda to date. The 8-inch touchscreen lets you control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings, Honda SENSING functions, and other advanced features through swipe, tap, and pinch gestures. This system also comes with navigation and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for more intuitive smartphone connectivity. HONDA SENSING AND SAFETY Using cutting-edge technologies, the Honda SENSING system aids the driver to prevent or effectively respond to dangerous driving situations. Honda’s suite of driver assistive features provides an array of advanced safety features such as collision mitigation braking system (CMBS), adaptive cruise control (ACC) with low speed follow (LSF), lane keeping assist (LKAS), road departure mitigation (RDM), and auto high beam. Honda SENSING receives information from two different devices. One is a millimeter-wave radar that can be found in the front bumper. The other is a monocular camera mounted on the upper, inside part of the windshield. Both devices work simultaneously to monitor and assess various conditions in front of the vehicle and give feedback to the driver. Honda SENSING aims to provide collision-free mobility and safety for everyone sharing the road.

Other standard safety features are six airbags, vehicle stability assist (VSA), hill start assist (HSA), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), emergency stop signal, front & rear parking sensors, multiview reverse camera with guidelines, lane watch camera, and straight driving assist. POWERTRAIN Powering the new Accord is a new 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine that puts out a maximum power output of 190 PS at 5,500 rpm and 243 Nm of torque from 1,500 - 5,500 rpm. Its higher horsepower and torque output are at par, if not more powerful, compared to its 2.4 liter naturally aspirated predecessor. Power is transmitted through a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The engine and transmission provide responsive performance, acceleration and efficient fuel economy. Sport mode is now available for an enhanced throttle and steering response. This, together with the CVT’s paddle shifters, gives the driver greater control over the vehicle’s transmission operation and power delivery. At the same time, Honda’s eco assist system, which consists of the ECON mode and eco-coaching ambient light, is still available to help drivers achieve fuel-efficient driving. The new Accord is available at all 38 Honda Cars dealerships nationwide with a suggested retail price of PHP 2,288,000. It will be offered in three colors: platinum white pearl, crystal black, and modern steel metallic. OCTOBER 2019

shering the Philippines into a new era in motoring, Toyota Motor Philippines has finally revealed the All-new Corolla Altis. With models ranging from a conventional 1.6 L, all the way to the top-of-the-line 1.8 L Hybrid, the Altis puts together form, functionality, and green technology in a single package. Elevating the Altis to greater heights, the front of the Altis sports Toyota’s signature trapezoidal lower grille that accentuates the low, wide stance of the car. The tops of the grille and the headlamps form a smooth line, accentuating the vehicle’s dynamic, active look made even more so by bi-beam LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels and LED line guide running lights on the 1.8V HV and 1.6V CVT variants.

The All-New Toyota Corolla Altis

The minimalist interior is every bit as sophisticated and sleek as the outside. Spacious, simple, and functional, it delivers comfort for both the driver and passengers for a ride unlike any other in its class. A lower hood line, larger windshield, and smaller A-pillar all give a better field of view, while seven SRS airbags, anti-lock brake system with electronic brake force distribution, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, and 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts for the driver and all passengers ensure safety on the road. The 1.8V HV offers additional functionality with the addition of Toyota Safety Sense. It’s a combination of features that includes a pre-collision braking system, lane departure alert, automatic high beam, lane tracing assist, and dynamic radar cruise control for unparalleled driving convenience. “The All-New Toyota Corolla is the first-ever model to be launched in the Philippines that completely embodies our philosophy of ever-better cars,” says Toyota Motor Philippines president Satoru Suzuki. “With Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) which is the new standard of design and engineering, it provides ever-better performance. With Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), it offers customers ever-better lives. And with Hybrid Technology, it helps create an ever-better world.” The 1.8V HV variant, unarguably the star of the show, is powered by VVT-I, 4-cylinder in-line DOHC, 16 valve engine with a displacement of 1,798 cc and an electric motor for a total output of 121 hp, and 142 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. Smoother driving, better fuel-efficiency, and emissions are the result of Toyota’s continuing adoption of hybrid technology. The highly competitive price of PHP 1.58 M means more people can shift to hybrid technology and make the roads greener one vehicle at a time.

henever the name Toyota Vios is heard, the first thing that comes to mind is the humble car that most TNVS operators use. Back in 2002, when the Vios was launched, it was meant to be something simple—a car for the masses that was meant to take them from point A to B.

Lessons from Toyota’s Vios Racing Festival Words and photos by Gabriel John Pe

The first two generations of the Vios had specs that were nothing to write home about but were among the most successful car models in the country. They only had two engine options: a 1.3-liter that maxed out at 84 hp and 121 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-liter that produced 109 hp and 141 Nm of torque, underpowered compared to the Yaris and the Altis. What made the Vios more successful was its price. It was then the cheapest car in Toyota’s roster, and one of the most affordable cars in the Philippine market. Fast forward to 2013, when Toyota released the third generation of the beloved subcompact sedan. It had a brand-new engine, and to celebrate, Toyota Motor Philippines launched the Vios Cup, a circuit race dedicated to the humble Vios. The third generation of Vios had newer engines but had the same power and torque output, which would, in theory, make for an accessible racing platform. As a racing fan myself, I used to laugh at the Vios Cup (now Vios Racing Festival) for forcing a car not made for racing to the utmost limits of its capabilities. For me, the pinnacle of car racing should be the Formula One, while GT car racing should be reserved for endurance races such as those in Le Mans and Spa-Francorchamps. A recent trip to the Vios Racing Festival in Clark opened my mind to the Waku Doki of the Vios Cup. One of the many things I realized at Clark was that there was an audience for circuit racing in the country. I was stunned to find that families really do flock to the event as a chance to bond and enjoy a day appreciating the spectacle of car racing. There is a huge misconception that motor racing is reserved for the privileged since it takes a lot of money and effort to become a fully fledged racing driver. But at the Vios Racing Festival, I saw a mix of people from all walks of life who enjoyed all the festivities despite the rain. As I sat down for the first race of the day, I was still skeptical. I knew that the new One Make Race (OMR) Vios was faster than the everyday car used by most Grab drivers, but how much faster and more powerful, I didn’t know. As racers did their warm up laps, I immediately understood that these cars felt at home in the track, with the low grunt of the engine and wheels screaming as they find their grip on the tarmac. OMR Vios was a different beast from the one I knew. Whenever the cars passed the audience stand, you could feel the power and speed. Unlike F1 cars, however, the OMR does have its limitations, and once the cars reached their maximum speed it was hard to see cars from the rear catch up to the others. Nevertheless the leaders on the race managed to make the race exciting with well

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

thought out overtaking maneuvers and patience before gunning for the lead.

especially on how to be a responsible driver in the streets and track.

I was also taken aback by some exciting action during the day, with racers crashing at the last minute, and the rain making the second race much more tricky. But at the end of the day, what really caught my attention was the camaraderie between the drivers. From the Promotional class and Sporting class up to the Celebrity class, everyone was like one big family. Racers were exchanging advice and reconciling after some nasty bumps in the race.

Also, the latest iteration of the Vios Cup showcased the debut of the Supra on Philippine soil, which got me thinking the possibility of a Supra Cup. The Vios Racing Festival is not meant to be the grandest of races in the Philippines. It is intended to be a grassroots program for motor racing, and since it’s recognized by the FIA, the same guys managing all other motor racing in the world, the Vios Racing Circuit is the proving ground for future motor racing legends.

More people should watch races such as this. First, it helps promote the sport (as a sports fan I’m all in for that). It can teach us more about driving, most

Whether you are a Vios, Toyota, or simply a racing fan, the Vios Racing Festival is something you should check out.

The campaign focused on various towns across North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Among the key cities that Suzuki reached were: Cauayan City, Ilocos, Malabon, Fairview, Diliman, Tanay, Rizal, Malolos, Calamba, Rosario Batangas, Puerto Princesa, Legazpi, Bacoor, Cauayan, Angeles, Pampanga, San Jose, Nueva Ecija, San Nicolas (Ilocos Norte), San Fernando (La Union), Iloilo, Cebu, Roxas, Bacolod, Ormoc, Kidapawan, Surigao City, General Santos City, Tagum, and Cagayan De Oro. With the successful turnout of the first run of Skydrive Sport Tambayan, Suzuki has slated another 25 legs of the campaign for the rest of the year to reach more communities and introduce its stylish motorcycle.

utility vehicles. The D-MAX LS-A is infused, as well, with features that address the demands of a market that value both hard work and play, business with leisure,” said IPC president Hajime Koso in the Cebu leg.

After the successful launch of the brand’s new pickup variant in Manila, the Isuzu D-MAX LS-A found its way to two of the biggest cities in the south: Cebu and Davao. The tour is part of Isuzu’s campaign to let consumers from Visayas and Mindanao experience the capabilities of the new D-MAX.

IPC provided mall displays in SM Seaside City in Cebu and SM Lanang in Davao, which also served as their official launches in the region. Apart from mall displays, IPC created a special 4x4 test drive course where the public could test out the full potential of D-MAX LS-A.

“The new D-MAX LS-A has a true character of a pick-up. Through this test drive activity, we will be able to showcase to the public its exceptional off-road capabilities, strong under chassis and powerful engine. Bringing this event in Davao is strategic, as expect to make a comeback in the pick-up segment especially in this region,” he adds during the Davao leg.

The test drive included courses like the lateral descent ditch crossing, cross axle articulation, elephant holes, 45-degree camber sides and the highlight 40-degree hill climb and descent course.

The D-MAX LS-A has a powerful 4JJ1-TCX engine capable of 177 PS of power and 380 Nm of torque. It is initially only available in the 4x4 variant, but a 4x2 variant is on its way in the coming months.

“The D-MAX LS-A represents nearly a century of Isuzu’s experience and innovation in the design, engineering, and workmanship of diesel-powered

Michelin introduces Energy XM2+ tires for small and mid-size passenger cars which has been a leading mass-market tire for 8 consecutive years. Its performance is made to last. Also, the tire’s ‘Stopping Superpower’ is preserved at a high level, even when the tire has been used for a long time. As its advertising campaign goes, Michelin Energy XM2+ is a ‘Stopping Superpower’, keeping consumers safe and confident on the road, time after time,” said Michael Nunag, Michelin’s chief representative to the Philippines. According to Michelin, the Energy XM2+ has a new full-rubber silica compound that provides shorter wet braking distance by 1.5 meters when new, and 2.6 meters when worn compared to other brands in a test conducted in Thailand last year. Petron launches “Fuel Wise” advocacy for Filipino motorists CONSUMER PROTECTION: Always ask for your receipt. Fuel Wise. With the roll-out of the Petron “Fuel Wise” advocacy, commuters will see road safety reminders, car-care advice, fuel efficient driving tips, and fuel recommendations in electronic billboards as well as banners and streamers in strategic locations. Stickering activities are also being conducted nationwide to enjoin more motorists in supporting the advocacy.

As the only Filipino-owned oil major, PETRON—with its commitment to sustain the country’s fuel requirements spanning more than 85 years—has always placed the needs of the Filipino motorists at the forefront of its endeavors. Taking this promise a step further, Petron is launching its “Fuel Wise” advocacy, a comprehensive campaign that aims to help Filipino motorists choose wise options to ensure that they are safe on the road, that their vehicles are properly maintained, that they get good fuel mileage, and that they use high-quality fuel. Here are some examples of Petron Fuel Wise tips:

ROAD SAFETY: Going for a long drive? Aside from checking your engine and gears, remember to take note of emergency hotlines and emergency stops on major highways. Fuel Wise. CAR CARE: Replacing clogged air filters regularly can improve engine performance and increase acceleration time and gas mileage. Fuel Wise. FUEL EFFICIENCY: Did you know that having the right tire pressure provides less road friction and less road friction means less fuel consumption? Fuel Wise. FUEL QUALITY: Cheaper price does not guarantee quality. The few pesos you save today may end up costing you more tomorrow. Fuel Wise.

Through a dedicated R&D team constantly creating fuels that will deliver optimum performance and efficiency for every type of vehicle, Petron has been acknowledged as a fuel innovator and a trusted source of quality fuel. It invested USD 2 billion in upgrading its Bataan refinery to ensure that its products, while processed locally, meet and even surpass global standards. And with the widest network of more than 2,400 stations nationwide, even the more remote countryside areas are sure to have access to the products and services offered by Petron. With its deep understanding of Philippine driving conditions and utmost concern for the welfare of motorists, the new advocacy further strengthens Petron’s commitment to provide Filipino consumers with the best experience at every touch point, with a guarantee that they are indeed being “ Fuel Wise ” with Petron.

AVID, SPMJ affirm partnership with auto policy forum on electric vehicles

AVID members presented DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba and SPMJ president Pinky Colmenares with tokens of appreciation.

The Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID) and the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists (SPMJ) joined forces to host AVID’s second economic and political briefing of 2019. This was held last August 30 at Seda Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. The two organizations invited Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary for Competitiveness and Innovation Dr. Rafaelita Aldaba to discuss the future of the Philippine automotive industry and the budding local market for electric vehicles (EVs). Undersecretary Aldaba leads the DTI’s initiatives for establishing an inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in collaboration with other government agencies and businesses. She also oversees the formulation and implementation of the Inclusive Innovation Industrial Strategy (i3S), a national industry roadmap that emphasizes the importance of innovation. In her presentation, she discussed the i3S strategy and inclusive innovation, as well as policy directions for creating a competitive EV industry in the Philippines. According to the Undersecretary, this strategy comprises five pillars: new industries, human resource development, micro, small, and medium enterprise development, innovation and entrepreneurship, and ease of doing business. She noted that the manufacturing and assembly of

electric motor components like batteries are one of the 12 priority markets for development. She also emphasized the importance of encouraging EV adoption in the Philippines to cut emissions and promote sustainable mobility. “Our policy is to embrace the new technology arising from Industry 4.0. We need to adapt and adopt these new technologies to improve our competitiveness to prepare for the stiff competition that our industries face,” she emphasized. For this to happen, Undersecretary Aldaba underscored, “Inclusive innovation must be at the front and center of our industrial policies.” She furthered that this calls for a “comprehensive and wholistic government approach” to policies and regulations governing the conduct of businesses, particularly, the ease of doing business, research and development, and innovation incentives; and a strong government-academe-industry collaboration with “focus on human resource development. We need to e-skill and upskill our workforce to prepare for future production.” In her welcome remarks, AVID president Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo said, “What will be the growth track for this economy? This is something important to think about. And while we won’t stop talking and discussing, we should move on to action in the interest of the industry’s sustainability. The media

can amplify our voice; let’s start with a more fruitful partnership today.” After the keynote presentation, SPMJ and AVID members engaged Undersecretary Aldaba in a lively open forum, covering topics from battery tariffs to fast-tracking electronics manufacturing in the Philippines. Ms. Agudo was optimistic that AVID’s partnership with the SPMJ will strengthen efforts to communicate auto industry policies to the general public. The forum itself was livestreamed on the Facebook pages of Motoring Today, AutocarPH, and Gadgets Magazine. In hosting their second forum of the year, AVID hopes to reaffirm its commitment to sustaining inter-sector dialogue on auto industry competitiveness amidst ever-shifting local, regional, and global socio-economic backdrops. The first forum held last May featured experts from the academe and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (eVAP) discussing the future of the electric vehicle industry in the country. Ms. Agudo hoped that AVID’s fora would strengthen the partnership between industry, government and the media. “Events like this are crucial to getting different sectors on the same page about auto policy. This won’t be the last time that AVID teams up with government and the press to communicate important issues,” the AVID president concluded.

BULLET POINTS

Words by Ren Alcantara

EDC lights are great, and everyone should have one. Sometimes though, you need performance that’s as yet beyond the reach of an EDC light. Olight knows this, and has released a superb mid-sized light that is a great balance between portability, capacity, and straight output. The Seeker 2 Pro packs much more power than you might think possible from a light its size. Before anything else, let’s take a look at the specs.

The Seeker 2 Pro is powered by a massive 21700 battery, with 5000 mAh on tap. This is paired with a bank of 3 efficient Cree XP-L HD CW LEDs, capable of putting out 5 levels of light, ranging from 5 lumens for an impressive 12 days, all the way to a blinding 3200 lumens for two minutes before it steps down to 600 which it is rated to sustain for over two hours. That’s a lot of light from something that’s a hair over 5 inches tall. At 198 grams, it’s too large for my own EDC, but with the included belt pouch, it should fit well on your waist, webbing, or on a pack. In the same way one wouldn’t use 50 BMG to shoot a fly (that’s clearly a 22 short job), the Seeker 2 Pro is meant for bigger things. Will it work as an EDC? Absolutely. Should you devote the EDC space to something more appropriate? Probably. If you’re the kind of person that needs a light like this though, it’s definitely hard to beat. Rubber inserts on the battery tube make for slip-free grip in the wet, and a large power button makes switching the light on easy, even with gloved hands. With an IPX8 rating, it’s capable of handing immersion in water for extended periods with no issues. It’s a light that’s made to be tougher than the environments it’s meant to work in, and still fit comfortably in the hand. To see what it’s capable of, I carried it exclusively for an entire week, in its pouch on my belt. It’s not much of a fashion statement, but the case held it fast and totally secure thanks to the buckle holding the top flap shut. The large power button is extremely easy to index and actuate, with a familiar user interface that existing Olight users will figure out in no time. It uses the same press-andhold or multiple-tap controls as most other Olights, with additional functions such as a timer-to-off, and memory of the last used setting. Olight has helpfully included small but bright LED indicators for both current output level and remaining power. Four green lights each inform you what setting you’re in and the remaining power left. It’s a quick way to check when you need to top up, and removes the guesswork from critical-use tools such as this. This model of the Seeker retains the convenient magnetic charging feature we’ve come to love from the brand, and

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

even comes with a wall mount, so you can keep the light topped up and ready to go in a moment’s notice. It’s a great little addition to the kit, and something I appreciated immensely. Having your light ready and waiting in the same spot means less time fumbling around looking for it when time is in short supply. Now that we have all that out of the way, it has to be stated that this light is extremely bright. Compared to my usual carry, which puts out an already impressive 1150 lumens, the Seeker blows it clean out of the water. The throw that this light is capable of is also extremely impressive, being able to illuminate subjects at about the claimed 250 meters away, at max output. Testing it at our subdivision, I think I may have alarmed some of the village guards, who came to investigate what the source of the sudden blinding light was. If nothing else, 3200 lumens is going to get you a lot of attention. What purpose would best be served by the Seeker 2 Pro? There are a few. Real hard use is the first. If you’re part of search and rescue, emergency services, or some other related field, this is a superb light that has plenty of endurance, and more than enough power for practically all hand-help applications in that field. Hikers and adventurers could also benefit from having one in their pack. Maximum output might be an overkill for a romp in the mountains outside of calling attention for yourself, but the longevity is certainly helpful, as is the rugged, waterproof construction. With the wall mount and charging system, it would make for a great emergency light, with plenty of lumens on tap for every conceivable home emergency scenario. It might be bulky for practical everyday carry, but that certainly doesn’t limit its usefulness. Having the right tool for the job is key, and this is the right tool for many jobs out there.

atching up with your friends when you’re preoccupied with responsibilities could be complicated. Apart from finding a common schedule, deciding where to go has always been a dilemma during reunions and nights out. Another thing to consider is budget. We all know that most yuppies are conscious consumers who want to get the most out of what they paid for. Thankfully, I discovered a lifestyle app that solves the timeless question: Where do we eat?

True to its name, Booky serves like an online phonebook of establishments, from restaurants, salons, spas, and fitness studios. Developed by local software company Scrambled Eggs Pte Ltd, Booky has been gaining traction with Filipinos. It has currently recorded over 500,000 downloads from the app market. The consumer app, which eats up less than 200 MB on mobile devices, features a lot of upgrades since its first release in 2014. It has expanded its offerings, providing health, wellness, and recreation services nationwide through over 15,000 accredited partners. Users are also in for a treat with its exciting promos that are curated for singles, couples, best friends, and even large groups.

58

There are two types of subscriptions available: one is free of charge, while the other has a monthly fee of PHP 199. New users are entitled to get a free month trial of Booky Prime which offers more deals and discounts. Services are divided into five major categories: Eat for restaurants, Glam for beauty salons, Move for gyms and fitness studios, Relax for spas and wellness centers, and Play for leisure facilities. So how does it work? It’s simple. Just tap the app, register, browse, and select the promo you want to redeem. Then go to the nearest branch where you can claim the offering. And since we’re already heading towards cashless payment, the app adapts the QR code system for transactions. There’s a built-in QR code scanner in the app which sends the code to your phone. That code will then be recorded by the staff from partner brands for reference. Booky’s user interface is very user-friendly. However, it does require an internet connection to work. Upon opening the app, you’ll be able to browse the recommended menus and service lists. Some of these are sorted by area, brand, type of cuisine, and exclusive daily offers. There’s even freedom for customers to organize places that they want to try. So if you’re a foodie or a fitness buff, I highly recommend that you spare some space on your phone for this app.

The Nearby icon below shows partner establishments in the vicinity. Should customers want to know how to get to an establishment, the app supports navigation via Google Maps. It also shows the menu of the restaurant or the services of a specific establishment and their contact numbers. To keep track of your transactions, the app has a history feature under the Me section which shows complete details on the previous redemptions as well as the amount the users were able to save. Apart from encouraging Filipinos to save more and spare their wallets during Petsa de Peligro, Booky is a strong advocate of education and malnutrition prevention. The app gets a part of every Booky Prime subscriber’s fee to sponsor school lunches through its feeding program partners, ARK and Kusina ng Kalinga. This initiative was started by Booky because studies show that providing public students meals helps raise average school attendance from 70 percent to 95 percent. Now, if that’s not for a good cause, we don’t know what is.

EVERYTHING APPLE

Apple’s Keynote Event Words by Gerry Gaviola

Apple’s event invite read “By Innovation only,” prompting high hopes for truly revolutionary tech. Did they pull it off? With tech rumors becoming more and more ubiquitous and accurate, some may

have found Apple’s newly announced tech as hardly a surprise. Many already knew what the new phones would look like, what variations they would come in, and that the Series 5 would be nearly identical to last year’s model. Given that, “By innovation only” seemed too risky of a tagline to put — and if it were just

mere iterations, many would’ve felt underwhelmed. So did Apple pull of another “s” year two times in a row? Well, it depends. Although a plethora of features were probably some that many have already expected, there’s definitely still plenty to be excited about.

The Naming Scheme The challenge of improving a phone that already runs circles around its competitors is how to make it even more compelling each year. If you caught the keynote online, then you may recall seeing that even the CPU and GPU of the 2018 iPhones are way ahead of its 2018 and 2019 competitors. Performance wise, iPhones have always been on top of the game and that is due in part because of its optimized software, and Apple’s very own silicon. Now, the question is, how did Apple define the new normal for this year’s phones? Time and time again, and ever since the introduction of the

60

OCTOBER 2019

very first iPhone, we’ve seen Apple change and define the very landscape of tech. What’s different now? First thing’s first, they got the naming right. Last year, Apple announced its fully fledged iPhone XS and XS MAX. Besides the obvious difference in size, the two new phones defined the new standard. Consequently, and unlike Apple, they announced a lower tier budget phone, the XR. The way they named it, and the way they released it, mattered. The XS was released first, defining

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

the new normal, then weeks later, the XR, which back then seemed like an inferior, consolation type of device. Tech reviewers and amateur tech enthusiasts took turns in taking jabs at the XR, and focused on how it wasn’t 1080p, and how the budget phone didn’t seem budget at all. But the XR’s predicaments were short lived. Youtuber Jonathan Morrison conducted an experiment with the Pocophone F1 and XR, where only their screens were shown to participants. Long story short, everyone chose the XR over the 1080p screen. Sales tell a

different story too, as the XR has shipped more units than any other phone of last year.

best Android smartphones in two years.” Well, now we have the A13, and boy is it even more advanced.

This year, the new normal is the iPhone 11, and they got the naming scheme right. The 11 is the successor of the XR, except that it isn’t marketed as the model inferior to the flagship, no. It’s the new benchmark, and the new standard that rocks the new A13 Bionic Chip. As Apple mentioned in its keynote, tech analyst Ben Thompson of Strachery considers the A12 as “so far ahead of the industry that it will still be competitive with the

The XR features a new dual 12 MP camera setup with an improved sensor that’s much more suitable for low light situations. Now equipped with wide and ultra wide lenses, the phone allows you to capture more of what’s in the scene. Perfect for landscapes, group photos and everyday adventures, the XR is definitely the entry level iPhone to buy. Added to this is better HDR, slow motion selfies or “slofies” as Apple puts it, and better water resistance.

And now the icing on the cake, the iPhone 11 Pro. Now marketed as the phone above the standard, it now also features the A13 Bionic chip, a new triple-camera system, a new screen, and better battery life. Now, incorporating the Pro in its name, it’s wise to ask how much of a Pro device it actually is.

the fastest custom silicon chipset in any phone to date.

Pro for Apple means having a screen that’s worthy enough to view when shooting and reviewing content. The screen gets a new name, the Super Retina XDR, reminiscent of the Apple Pro Display XDR they debuted last June. It hits a brightness of 800 nits when shooting under the sun, and up to 1200 nits when viewing extreme dynamic range content. Pro for Apple means having a 3 lens setup — a telephoto, a wide, and an ultra wide. Pro means rocking new battery technology that gives it up to 4 more hours when compared to the previous model. Pro means rocking the A13 Bionic,

Pricing done right Apple is slowly realizing that not everyone is going to want to jump the bandwagon and update their iPhone each year. Despite the XR being the most sold phone of 2018, there’s still a decline in the general buying trend. This time around, they reduced the pricing of their entry level phone from USD 749 to USD 699. Although 50 bucks doesn’t mean much, this translates to billions lost when scaled. However, this tactic would still seem like a win-win situation for consumers and Apple. If more iPhones are on people’s hands, then the more they’re sucked into the ecosystem where Apple’s current services, such as Apple TV+ and Arcade, are expected to flourish.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

In this iteration, Apple seems to be targeting “prosumers” who would typically categorize themselves as photographers and videographers. It is a common truth that that demographic loves lens variations, cameras with great low light performance, and overall smarter gear. All 3 of the iPhone 11 Pro’s cameras shoot in 4K. Third party apps like Filmic Pro have flaunted what can be done with the lens variations and the level of computational photography. In the company’s most recent demo, the iPhone was shooting in 3 different focal lengths, in 4K glory. Apple’s new camera technology seems to shoot great in low light too, so great that Apple’s Phil Schiller describes its Deep Fusion system as “computational photography mad science.” We’ll just have to wait and see how this compares to Google’s Night Sight.

Other things announced If you think about it, all watches really only have one primary function, and that is, to tell time. Some have ridiculed the Series 5 for not having enough new features for it to warrant the 5 in its name, hinting that it should’ve been called something in the lines of 4S, or 4.1. But there are noteworthy changes. All watches have the primary function of telling time, and the traditional analog ones really only differ in make and model. The fact that Apple now offers the new watch in Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Ceramic and Titanium finishes is a big plus in itself. Apart from that, the new watch now features an always on display, and an internal compass. Alongside the new iPhones and watches, Apple also announced its new entry level budget 10.5 inch iPad, which unfortunately runs a dated 2017 processor. Pricing for the TV+ and Apple Arcade were also announced, both of which are USD 4.99 a month. A year’s worth of the TV+ subscription will come as free if you purchase a new Apple device.

GAMING

Basketball is the quintessential Filipino sport. The sport is played in every barangay across the country and you can easily join games whenever you want. You might not be the next Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, or Anthony Davis (this year’s cover athlete), but NBA 2K20 offers some good old gaming basketball fun combined with a paradigm shift that may have been creeping into sports games in general over the past few years, but has finally arrived in this installment of the 2K franchise.

Many of the previous features from other 2K games return in NBA 2K20. You can pick it up and play with your friends or take on the task of managing an NBA team or player (MyCareer mode). Unfortunately, the MyTEAM mode is largely unchanged and uninspiring. If you play daily, you’ll get some prizes, but aside from playing other teams for virtual currency (VC), that’s about it. The MyGM and MyLEAGUE modes have changed significantly. Playing previous titles, I used to sim entire seasons to see if my roster changes and other experiments would pan out, but now you have to complete daily tasks, slowing down the pace of MyGM significantly. Making each decision is now crucial to your team’s success, and sometimes you’ll have to put some off for later. However, the biggest change (and possibly the most intriguing) is MyCareer mode. I

One of the biggest changes in this installment of the 2K franchise is to use your platform in MyCareer mode to speak out publicly on certain issues. Do you want to use it to speak up about wider issues in basketball, or just “shut up and dribble” and stay silent? It is not unusual for athletes to speak out about issues. While they are paid millions and millions of dollars to play sports, they also choose to leverage that platform to advocate for those who don’t have millions and millions of dollars. As I mentioned earlier,

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

ended up playing MyCareer mode more than anything else in the game. For this MyCareer mode, you play as Che, who is a star player for his college basketball team, but has to go through an unusual path to the NBA. You can balance out Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, and Defense/ Rebounding. Do you want to make Che an unstoppable three-point specialist like the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry, or an inside presence like the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis? Or do you want a jack-of-all-trades like the Houston Rockets’ Russell Westbrook? The choice is largely yours—but I went with the guy who fills up the stat sheet to make myself a valuable acquisition for any NBA franchise. One of the more annoying aspects of the game is that they try to get you to spend real-life money to make any sort of upgrade, but having done games journalism for most (if not all) of the “microtransaction” era, it was something that I was already used to seeing in games.

this change was clearly a paradigm shift in the realm of sports games in general. You can choose to become more than just the highlight reels and statistics, and bring a moral ethos into a game that you usually just pick up and play with friends, or play coach or GM. While NBA 2K20 remains largely unchanged from last year in the big picture, adding the “woke” elements in MyCareer mode made me definitely reflect on how I approach sports games. Before, I just sought to build great teams and let them

Other than building the type of player you want to be, you’ll be fully immersed into a realistic MyCareer experience this time around. Previous MyCareer modes had completely unrelatable characters who seemed like they came out of comic books or movies than people you’d encounter in real life. NBA 2K20 changes that. You’ll be fully immersed in the NBA experience. You’ll be answering questions from the press, heckling from the fans, and other influences as well. Can you endure the pressure, or will you make your own decisions? You’ll have team morale and a fan base, but you can also choose to boost your own ego to get corporate sponsorship deals. You can be low-key and boring, or bathe in the limelight like other NBA superstars of yesterday (Charles Barkley) or today (Draymond Green).

prosper (if the game’s algorithms let me) or rebuild a team from scratch. That is what first got me into sports games—the idea of team-building and nurturing that team to success, playing armchair GM for hours on end. But with NBA 2K20, what I really saw was the ability to see sports games from another perspective. Could sports games really be injecting the human side of the athlete experience in the future? We’ll have to find out. Overall, if you really want to enjoy NBA 2K20, stick to MyCareer mode

Borderlands is a title that is close to my heart. Since my friends and I picked up Borderlands 2 some years ago, we hadn’t really found a game that came close to the co-op looter-shooter experience the title delivered. Fast-forward more than five years, and the sequel, Borderlands 3, is finally available to the public. I, along with the same friends that played and finished the previous installment, pre-ordered, and jumped in right at day 1.

First off, the graphics. It has the same iconic cell-shaded treatment it has always had. This is a mixed bag, as it keeps the old games from looking dated, but is a drastically different approach from the increasingly hyper-realistic graphics we are starting to see in current AAA titles. Bright, bold, comic book graphics work with the game’s theme, and is something that I’m glad they decided to keep.

revolutionary gameplay. Sure, the characters are ones we haven’t gotten to play before, and they offer different skills to cater to new playstyles, but that, along with more items, is about it. The reason one would play and enjoy this title is continuing the story, seeing what the old characters are up to, and experiencing more of the same Borderlands

goodness we’ve come to know and love. Is this a bad thing? Potentially, if you’re tired of the Borderlands experience. If, however, you loved it enough to play any or all of the old titles again, and then cash out for the DLC, then you’re going to love this title just as much. More of the same isn’t necessarily bad. Except for Claptrap. He’s still the worst.

Story-wise, it’s as Borderlands as ever, at a grander scale from what we have seen in the past. The story picks up right after the last Borderlands 2 DLC, with a new threat in the form of video-streaming, cult-leading terror twins Troy and Tyrene. While Handsome Jack is quite a tough act to follow, these two do manage to hold their own in terms of outright hateability. They’ve managed to unite all the different raider clans under their banner, and are using all that manpower to help them find vaults scattered across the system. By finding the keys and opening the vaults, the twins hope to take the power from the vaults for themselves. Claptrap is still there as well, annoying as ever, much like an annoying stranger who talks to you too much, or a workmate that just won’t shut up. The main cast is rounded out with four playable characters, Moze, Amara, FL4K, and Zane, each with their own abilities, playstyles, and amazing one-liners, all of which enrich the story in their own, special vault-hunter way. Moze can summon and pilot a massive mech, FL4K can control creatures, Amara is a siren with powerful combat abilities, and Zane is a witty irish gun for hire that uses shields, decoys, and a drone to dispatch the bad guys. For this review, I chose Zane, whose running, gunning, seat-of-his-pants playstyle fits my own to a tee. The game wastes no time throwing you into the action. After a bit of a recap over what has gone on between the last time we saw our heroes, we’re sent on our merry way, gun in hand, to shoot stuff. While it’s hard to deviate from the usual “get a briefing shoot enemies get to a destination to get a thing” formula, Borderlands 3 at least makes the experience fun. Absurd jokes, clever one-liners, and occasional taunting from the main villains all work together to keep the game from getting boring. Then there’s the item hunt. Distilled to its essence, this game is a looter shooter. I daresay it is the looter shooter, and the constant hunting for weapons will keep you walking to unexplored areas, and coming back to previously explored ones, opening every chest in between. As a looter shooter, there’s also a very strong RPG element in place. As in the older titles, gaining levels nets you skill points that you can use to activate abilities and increase their effects. There are now also helpful passive perks that become available as you unlock higher skill tiers. You’re going to spend a lot of time tweaking skill point distribution and items to min-max your character’s potential, just as it should be. At the end of the day though, it doesn’t offer all that much if you’re looking for new,

MUSIC CORNER

THE THE ANTI-HOLIDAY ANTI-HOLIDAY PLAYLIST PLAYLIST Words by Ren Alcantara

It’s October, and if you’re reading this from literally anywhere in the Philippines with a mall, that means you’ve been hearing Christmas music for at least a solid month now. Jose Mari Chan has once again made his way into every waking moment, and while that’s great for the memes, it’s not the best thing for our sanity. We’re here to try and make things better. Here, for your consideration, is an Anti-holiday playlist, guaranteed to leech all the happiness and good cheer from your heart. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, mind. It’s all about balance. So if you’re all Christmassed out, queue this bad boy up and get back to your normal, melancholic self.

Please Come Home for Christmas Fiona Apple You’re not going to find this track on Spotify, so you’re going to have to head over to YouTube to try and get a hit. It’s a recording of a Fiona Apple performance of an iconic Chrstmas blues song, and is dripping with the longing and heartache that can only come from missing someone during the most wonderful time of the year. By this point in your life, dear reader, I’m almost certain you’ve experienced this kind of yearning, so Fiona’s emotional rendition of an already sad song is certain to hit home. For maximum effect, listen to it sitting by a window facing an empty street.

Baby It’s Cold Outside Zach Braff and Donald Faison If you’re a fan of Scrubs, this is something that’s right up your alley. The chemistry between Braff and Faison is at its peak here, and they let it shine through what might be the most covered contemporary holiday track out there. The tune is the same, though it quickly turns into a comedy skit that’s actually reasonably funny. Even if the humor isn’t your cup of tea, watching will at least stick it to the innumerable covers of a song that’s surprisingly unsettling once you think about what’s actually going on.

Fairytale of New York The Pogues

Oi To The World No Doubt Everything In Time

Strangely heartwarming in a drunk, Irish sort of way, this is a quintessential Christmas track that you’re not likely to find in any sanitized album of carols. It reads like a tumultuous relationship that’s still actually kind of sweet. Though it was actually recorded months before Christmas rolled around, it’s still a great listen if you regard the lyrics closely, admire the instrumental work, and imagine you’re in a New York sidestreet, sharing a cigarette with a fellow holiday dodger.

No Doubt remains one of the biggest Ska bands to have ever broken into the mainstream, and for good reason. While this is a Christmas song, and does have tones of good cheer, you can completely overlook that and just run with the awesome ska sound that has been woefully absent from the airwaves for far too long. Steffani’s distinct vocals, coupled with that heavy Ska brass is a great distraction from all the sterile, hot cocoa and sweater music that we’re all accustomed to hearing this time of year.

Ave Maria Chris Cornell A Very Special Christmas While it might be strange to include a track from a Christmas album in a list of anti-holiday songs, this isn’t one we can pass up. Ave Maria, the Schubert classic, is given new life by Chris Cornell. Chris doesn’t bring out his signature wail out in this track, but it’s heavily alt Rock, and unmistakably Cornell. It’s a soulful take on the song, but made all the sadder by the rock legend’s passing in 2017. There’s not a lot more to say about this track, but find it online, and listen to it quietly, relishing the voice of an icon gone by.

Little Drum Machine Boy Beck Just Say Noel Beck is a rare musical genius, and we are lucky to have experienced his music in our lifetime. Another ‘90s track that dropped after the breakout success of Odelay, this is a tour-de-force of his visionary talent. This seven-minute masterpiece was ahead of its time, and holds its own even today. While holiday robot funk isn’t a genre itself yet, this is destined to be its anthem. With fat 808 beats, and a very Flight of the Conchords vibe, it’s definitely worth a playthrough at the next family gathering, if only to confuse the oldies.

Christmas Song Dave Matthews Band Remember Two Things While superb at both, Dave Matthews is neither the best guitarist, nor the most talented vocalist. His lyrics are second to none. While it’s not exactly a Christmas song, as the title might lead you to think, it’s a song about a great guy, and the great things he did. Regardless of what you think about the season, or even about religion, this is a song that is just so feel-good it’ll tame any Scrooge. Head over to YouTube and find Dave’s 2009 performance at Las Vegas where he shares the stage with guitar virtuoso Tim Reynolds—this is one of the best versions of the song. The Christmas season can be stressful, the music can be overbearing, and the constant good cheer maddening, but we hope these tracks can give you a little break from all the revelry, and find your space.

JAMES DYSON AWARDS The James Dyson Award’s goal is simple: to recognize people who design something to solve a problem. It runs in 27 countries, and is open to university-level students, as well as recent graduates studying product design, industrial design, and engineering.

Here in the Philippines, one of the biggest problems is the heat. In a country where temperatures regularly hit the mid-30s, airconditioners are almost a necessity. Households will run multiple units for hours each day, and each one will have harmful HFCs that could potentially leak and damage the environment. It’s this problem that the winner of the Philippine leg of the Dyson Award hopes to solve. Maria Yzzabell Angel Palma, an engineering student from De La Salle University invented AirDisc Cooling Technology. Current AC units use refrigerants to cool inside air by compressing the refrigerant gas and letting it expand. The process allows the unit to pull heat energy from the inside of a space and transfer it outside. It is a closed system that allows the AC to work quite well, but the problem is that through use, leaks can develop, leaking harmful HFCs into the atmosphere. “One kilo of chemical refrigerant can have as much as 20,000 kilos of CO2 global warming potential. Cooling must be made available for

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

all in an era of increased global temperatures. To be successful against the horrendous threats, the entire global population as much as possible must be made to become aware to act commensurately,” Angel explains. Angel’s AirDisc solution uses a combination of air and atmospheric moisture to cool a space. Both are free, exceedingly abundant, and have absolutely zero negative impact on the environment. With no Ozone-depleting effects, and no releasing greenhouse gasses, her solution additionally uses a meager 150 W per hour, over traditional air conditioners that burn 1,500 W per hour. Dyson Philippines Advanced Manufacturing Centre general manager, Richard Perez said “Angel’s approach in innovation is very much in line with Dyson’s philosophy – solving problems that others ignore and environmentally friendly. We hope that through the Award, Filipino students can be inspired to find solutions for problems relevant globally.”

inema is known for being a mirror that takes a few liberties reflecting real life. It has always adapted to the fears of the time, even influencing the future at various points.

Horror films had their beginnings with iconic renditions of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and The Mummy, along with the rest of the Universal Monsters of the ‘20s to the ‘50s. Horror films evolved with current fears, as aliens gained attention in the 50s with the Roswell crash, the Japanese kaiju films of the 60s, and ‘70s slasher flicks. Cult-based “Satanic Panic” films of the ‘80s, brought the scares a little closer to reality. A mixture of these trends continued all the way up to the late 2010s along with remakes of classics and horror mixed with social commentary. Indeed, the horror genre has touched so many viewers and expanded into more than a handful of subgenres that has vastly expanded the scope of the horror movie. With Halloween coming up here are a couple of movies to watch for a good old scare-athon made up of genre picks proving that, unlike most of their characters, horror is very much alive.

Director: Michael Dougherty Starring: Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker, Brian Cox An interconnecting horror anthology, Trick ‘r Treat’s stories are tied together by one character: the pajama-clad, burlap sack-wearing boy acting as an enforcer of Halloween’s rules. Featuring tragedy, jump scares, camp, and a twist doubling as poetic justice, the film is a smorgasbord of ingredients of a cult horror film. The film may be older than the others on this list but that does not take away from the horror filled fun it gives.

Director: Robert Eggers Starring: Anya Taylor Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie

Roger Eggers’ feature directorial debut centers around a banished 17th century family of New England colonizers being terrorized by evil forces. Reminiscent of dark English folktales of old, the film uses the universal fear of a strong, unseen force going after and eventually losing your family to them as well. Taking a pass from the jump scare tactics of recent movies, The Witch is carefully paced. It evokes a slow, creeping sense of dread hitting hard with an eerie end.

After shocking audiences with his directorial debut in Get Out (2017) comedian and writer-director Jordan Peele provides an excellent follow-up to his social horror film, with stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke (Black Panther’s Nakia and M’Baku respectively). As with the first film, Us is rife with legitimate scares and a unique premise pitting the protagonists in a family vacation-turned home invasion against their twisted doppelgangers: the Tethered. Director: Jordan Peele Starring: Lupita Nyong’o, Duke Winston, Elisabeth Moss

Fans of 80s supernatural horror, the time when John Carpenter was at the height of his powers, will definitely be interested in The Void. Directors Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie of Astron-6 fame opted for a serious tone as they were aiming for serious suspense and Lovecraftian horror. You know you are in for a good time when the story serves a deputy and a group of survivors to robed, knife-wielding cultists and a healthy dose of practical body horror creatures that would make David Cronenberg gush. Director: Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie Starring: Aaron Poole, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Fathers

Director: Adam Wingard Starring: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn

Director: Adam Wingard Starring: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Adam Wingard throws his audience into what is basically a reverse-slasher film, with his best outing yet. Sharni Vinson (Step Up 3D) stars as Erin, who accompanies her boyfriend to his family reunion where they are attacked by three masked men. Redefining the horror movie cliche of the final girl in the home invasion film, she turns the tables on the masked men channeling her inner Rambo and Kevin McCallister with brutal kills and inventive traps. Giving us a smart take on one of the biggest horror movie tropes of all time.

Asian horror is at it again. From girls in white night gowns to... more girls in white night gowns? With director Na Hong-jin of The Chaser (2008) at the helm of the South Korean film, The Wailing takes audiences along for the ride on a supernatural mystery centering on a man trying to save his daughter. The unsettling imagery present in the film instantly takes over even after a moment of levity. Horror in more ways than one, it’s official: Asians are taking horror back. OCTOBER 2019

SNAP SHOTS

Words by Gabriel John Pe

October is often associated with ghouls, ghosts, and other ghastly creatures thanks to generations of Halloween traditions. Whenever we approach the week of Halloween, photos of ghosts surface almost everywhere you look. While some are difficult to explain, here are some of the most common explanations for some spooky photos.

74

OCTOBER 2019

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

One of the most common “paranormal” phenomena in pictures is a ghostly orb floating around in the shot. The glowing balls of light are attributed as the manifestation of spirits, or at least their energy.

Another explanation for orbs are insects and dust. Insects can emit a slight glow in infrared cameras, dust passing before the camera are also mistaken as orbs mainly due to infrared light bouncing off of them.

The reasonable explanation for these orbs is backscatter. Backscatter occurs when light is reflected off water droplets and dust in the frame. Often times this can occur from the flash of the camera, which is why they suddenly appear on the preview of the photo.

Aside from dust and insects, car lights, street lamps, and other sources of lights can also be mistaken as orbs, especially when you are shooting in a rural area. Another source of light in rural areas are animal eyes that you might not realize are in the frame.

Mist in photographs is sometimes credited as the visual manifestation of a spirit. However several things can also be mistaken for a misty haze. One example of this is your breath, especially on a cold and chilly night. The warmth of our breaths can create mist when we exhale which can then be captured by the camera and be mistaken for mist coming out of the void.

The most compelling photographic evidence for ghosts usually involves whole apparitions and shadowy figures. The most common explanation for figures is that there really was a physical figure in the shot. This usually happens when shooting near places with heavy foot traffic. In cases like abandoned buildings, squatters might be roaming, looking for a place to stay for the night.

most paranormal investigators avoid long exposure photography as much as possible to avoid such incidents.

Another common case of figure or rather not of is Pareidolia. Pareidolia is the phenomenon when our brains recognize a face even though there really is none. Pareidolia is a type of apophenia, the human tendency to find patterns in all things.

Lastly, there are now apps dedicated to ‘insert’ ghosts in your photos. While this is not a harmful prank, it does question all other ghostly photographs circulating on the Internet.

One of the less common explanations for these figures involves your camera’s exposure setting. Long exposure and movement don’t mix, which is why there’s bound to be a blurry figure when somebody moves in front of a camera taking a long exposure shot. That is why

The question, “Are ghosts real?” cannot be answer by mere photographs. Experts in the paranormal would argue that photos are a great source of evidence, but should not be the sole source of evidence. So the next time you see a picture of a ‘ghost’ in your timeline take it with a grain of salt.

local leading players is a key strategy for us to ensure we are meeting the country’s specific needs and we see this collaboration with ISOC as a catalyst to enable the transformation within the Philippines telecommunications sector and lay the right foundation for the country’s digital readiness,” said Suresh Sidhu, CEO, Edotco. He also shared that they are very encouraged by the proposed tower sharing guidelines by the DICT showcasing their commitment to facilitate the tower sharing roll out in the country. He believes that with Edotco’s best practices and regional benchmarks, as well as ISOC’s local expertise, the companies’ vision of transforming the

Resulticks brings advanced omnichannel marketing solutions to the country

Resulticks Chief Operating Officer and President Kulmeet Bawa and Resulticks Asia Pacific Director for Partnership Channels Ria Rodriguez-Bie.

Resulticks, a leading real-time customer engagement solutions provider, has announced the expansion of its presence in the Philippines to meet local demand from brands for omnichannel marketing. Based on a study conducted by Resulticks, about 70 percent of Filipino brands have begun consolidating their customer engagement database, an indication of the local market’s growing movement towards an omnichannel marketing approach. “The Philippines is a key market for our expansion, as Southeast Asia continues its rise as a global economic powerhouse. As local companies become more sophisticated, we want to position ourselves as a key partner in their growth plans,” said Redickaa Subrammanian, co-founder and CEO of Resulticks. “Brands in the Philippines are tapping into the power of digital and innovation to create new opportunities for growth and foster a futureforward environment. We at Resulticks are

thrilled to be an enabler of this transformation as our presence grows across the country,” said Kulmeet Bawa, chief operating officer, Resulticks. The brand has also tapped Cloudian as its implementation partner of choice for the Philippine. “Filipino consumers have become increasingly saturated with marketing messages from brands, meaning local brands have had to undergo significant changes to shift with the times. This is why 59 percent of local brands have said that real-time marketing is a key priority for them in 2019,” said Ria RodriguezBie, Asia Pacific director for Partnership Channels, Resulticks. “Through our market-leading technology, we want to help local brands—especially those in the BFSI, retail, travel, and hospitality sectors— take their marketing strategy to the next level and help them engage with customers in a more meaningful way,” Rodriguez-Bie adds.

Resulticks was named by Gartner as part of its Magic Quadrant for Multichannel Marketing hubs for three consecutive years. The increased in-country presence of the brand might be a timely solution for the Philippine marketplace, given that the local brands, according to the survey, have highlighted technology limitations and an overwhelming amount of data as their top two marketing challenges. With Resulticks’ omnichannel reach, brands can coordinate marketing campaigns across all relevant channels such as social media, emails, eCommerce platforms, mobile apps, SMS, and digital assistants. Resulticks can also enable integrated campaigns by bridging the gap with offline channels using technology such as QR codes and location beacons in conjunction with customer data. The brand also pairs customer data management capabilities with AI and machine learning to enable brands to better deliver seamless customer journeys and individualized interactions with customers in real-time.

Globe myBusiness partners with Facebook for credit card-free Facebook ads platform Globe myBusiness has partnered with Facebook to launch the country’s first credit cardfree platform for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to easily create and boost ads on Facebook. The Globe myBusiness Ad Creator lets business owners create content and charge its advertising experience directly to their Globe myBusiness postpaid bill which eliminates the need to own a credit card to pay for Facebook ads. Digital marketing remains one of the most important platform for MSMEs to reach their target since Filipinos spend an average of 10 hours a day online. “Globe myBusiness understands the dilemma that micro and small entrepreneurs face when trying to spread awareness about their products and services. While business owners acknowledge the importance of social media marketing and advertising, many of them do not own a credit card which is a requirement by Facebook if one wants to put up an ad in the Philippines. On one hand, those who do have a credit card do not want to use their personal account for business purposes,” said Ces Porto, Globe myBusiness Marketing Head.

Globe partners with Facebook to help MSMEs

“Being a partner of entrepreneurs in their digitalization journey, Globe myBusiness decided to join hands with Facebook in creating a unique platform, the first in the country, to address this concern and give more opportunities for our MSMEs to promote their business to a wider market,” she added. On the other hand, John Rubio, country director, Facebook Philippines said: “Each day people come

to Facebook to connect with the people, products, and services that they care most about. Across the world, there are over 90 million businesses on Facebook, and over 25 million businesses on Instagram -- that are using our free and paid tools to run and grow their businesses. Together with our partners Globe and OnlineSales, we will expand our support for Philippine businesses of all sizes by providing tools and resources to help them grow and thrive in the digital marketplace.”

Local event activation agency brings interactive technologies to the Philippines The recent year is a testament that the local event industry has taken a giant step forward. Founded by Sharon Yu-Ong, Waveplay Interactive brings to life brands and event organizers’ wishlist of interactive ideas. Showcasing well over 30 Experiential Technologies and counting—from motion and sound games, interactive displays— Waveplay Interactive is the first in introducing the latest trends in event activation such as the 360 Selfie, Holo Foto, GlamShot Infinity, Runway Studio, and Copycam. These services garnered recognitions from E! Channel Asia, GMA Kapuso CoLab, and Best of Manila. Sharon shares that when Waveplay Interactive was starting, the market didn’t embrace the idea of experiential technologies right away. The 80

company’s big break, however, came from the Philippines’ longest-running noontime TV variety show. “When we presented the group motion gaming concept to Eat Bulaga, they came on board immediately because the idea tied in with their Bayanihan Culture advocacy, where crowds work together towards a common goal,” she recalls.

Never afraid to go out of the box, Waveplay Interactive now has over 30 customizable concepts, with the company targeting at least five more to be introduced every year. Waveplay also produces super custom interactives that may not be found in their roster of services. Among its clients are top local and international brands including SM, Globe, Bayer, Dove, Nissan, Disney Philippines, PLDT, Topshop, and McDonald’s. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

CYBER SECURITY

SEA kids use the Internet mostly for music and video streaming Children in Southeast Asia today use the internet increasingly for video and music entertainment as well as for software downloads, and lesser for online messaging. More kids in the region use the World Wide Web to watch their favorite TV series like Game of Thrones and movies like Avengers, according to the 2019 report from Kaspersky Safe Kids. Based on the report’s 2018 and 2019 results, a double-digit growth in children using the internet for accessing software, audio, and video websites was observed in Indonesia (38.72 percent to 60.33 percent), the Philippines (25.41 percent to 49.12 percent), Singapore (25.03 percent to 42.32 percent), Thailand (11.28 percent to 37.23 percent), and Vietnam (27.11 percent to 50.14 percent). Only Malaysia scored a slight decrease from 60.08 percent to 51.15 percent. This category, however, remains the current top online interest among Malaysian kids. The software, audio, video category includes websites for downloading audio and video files: movies, recordings of sports events and concerts, music, music videos, video clips, audio and video learning materials, etc. Torrent trackers and file sharing services irrespective of physical location of files to which they provide access were also under this category. “It is an accepted fact that our children are better internet navigators than us, adults. With their curiosity and quickness in grasping or even making their own online trends, it is undoubtedly important for parents to know their interests and habits. Our report showed videos, music, and software are increasingly becoming kids’ favorite activities, and we are fully aware that such sites are plagued with malware, virus, and dangerous content. We hope these findings could help parents in understanding their kids better and in protecting them against the potential dangers in the digital world,” comments Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky. With the shift in their online interests, the top three internet activities for kids in SEA for 2019 are software, audio, and video websites; online messaging; and electronic commerce. More young shoppers, fewer adult content visitors in SEA The same report showed a trend of increasing young shoppers in Southeast Asia where the year-on-year comparison showed as much as a 13 percent increase from January to July 2018 and 2019. Singaporean kids led the pack tallying 18.82 percent compared with just 5.58 percent of children using the internet for e-commerce.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

The Philippines closely followed at 13.21 percent compared with 2.39 percent last year. Malaysia recorded an increase of over 8 percent (4.70 percent to 13.02 percent), while Indonesia and Thailand have 4.8 percent and 1.62 percent growth, respectively. Only Vietnam marked a slight decline from 1.03 percent to 1.02 percent of young shoppers online.

1.

Communicate - talk and serve as a mentor. You can teach your kids as to what is socially acceptable to do and what is not. You should also make your kids feel comfortable coming to you on those instances where they frankly were a kid, messed up and did something wrong.

2.

Have the talk regularly - talk to your kids regularly about technology, even if it means you playing dumb and asking them to help you set up a Snapchat, Tumblr or Facebook account.

Under this category, special web pages of public and private institutions or individuals that offer any paid services are included as well as special web pages of banks where online banking transactions can be performed. Websites of online payment systems that require a personal user account is also covered by this category. Another noteworthy finding is the decrease in percentage of kids in the region who use the internet to access adult content. Most countries in the region showed lesser interest for pornography and related content this year. Malaysia posted a very minimal increase of only 0.09 in this category. Asia, in general, also scored a decline from 2.72 percent to 2.26 percent yet its numbers remained quite high compared with other regions globally in terms of adult content interest among kids.

By showing your kids that you trust them as teachers, the more it builds up that mutual trust. You can also educate them to things that you are hearing or seeing in regards to cyberthreats or security breaches. 3.

Set boundaries - make sure that they know what is acceptable and what is not. Also make them aware of the consequences of going somewhere that they shouldn’t or using tech when they shouldn’t be.

4.

Educate yourself – be aware of your kids’ online interests and of the latest threats online. Remember that you cannot teach what you do not know.

5.

Use the resources that are there for you - use the resources provided by some companies or organizations that can help guide you in raising your modern kid.

Tips for modern parents Kids are smart, but they are not fully aware of the threats online. To protect them from the dangers lurking in the internet, Kaspersky suggests the following:

Perceived complexity and lack of security skills represent growth opportunity for IT channels

The perceived complexity and lack of security skills is the chance for growth opportunities in the IT channels in Japan and Asia Pacific, according to a study commissioned by global cybersecurity firm Sophos. The study titled, Future of Cybersecurity in Asia Pacific and Japan - Culture, Efficiency, and Awareness found that the success of an organization’s cybersecurity investment lies in more than buying technology, with corporate culture, employee education, and path-to-purchase playing a critical role. “This research highlights the everyday struggles of organisations across APJ. Huge gaps exist in finding security expertise and in staying up to date with technology, and this represents a massive opportunity for the channel. To stay relevant, channel partners are encouraged to become more cybersecurity savvy while also passing on the expertise they learn from their trusted security vendors to their customers. Educating customers about best practices, about people and process, is just as important as leveraging innovative technologies to improve their organisation’s security posture,” said Gavin Struthers, regional vice president for Asia Pacific and Japan, Sophos. In the Philippines, the study found that the majority (64 percent) of business decision makers believe that the lack of security

82

OCTOBER 2019

expertise is a challenge for their organizations, with 62 percent finding the recruitment of skills to be a struggle. The study relates this to the setup of cybersecurity within organizations, which commonly sees IT staff tasked with cybersecurity in addition to their other responsibilities. Additionally, the study points to a wider cultural issue, specially in the attitude and behavior, impacting corporate cybersecurity. 78 percent of organizations in the country believe that the major challenge to their security for the next 24 months will be improving cybersecurity awareness and education among employees and leaders. 77 percent of respondents in the country anticipate their use of third party security partners over the next year. These organizations are also increasing their security partners in a bid to manage cyber threats such as phising, malwares, and ransomwares. However, 84 percent of respondents are satisfied with their current main security provider. The study also found that organizations are most likely to consider new cybersecurity solutions or strategies after serious attacks or breaches, or to better support adoption of new technologies, products or services. Currently, a majority of business as engage cybersecurity vendors for point solutions in traditional outsourcing/ licensing contract.

However in the next two years, organizations predict that they will engage in multi-year contracts for holistic solutions and licensing contracts— a sign that the channel has an expanding role to play. Additionally, there is growing requirement by organizations for the IT channel to do more. One in three, or about 35 percent of respondents want partners to demonstrate that they understand their business and a further 43 percent are looking for partners to provide comprehensive end-to-end support. “Security is hard. We all know it. Sophos’ survey highlights the constant challenge presented by the evolving security landscape and never-ending search for skills and best practices to help organisations overcome these threats. What does it really mean to ‘be secure’? Ultimately, security is about managing risk. To do that effectively, IT managers must be able to identify key areas where their team’s actions will have an outsized impact on protecting their organisation, employees and the data their company has been entrusted with,” said Chester Wisniewski, principal research scientist, Sophos. The study was conducted by the Tech Research Asia, took a major quantitative survey wherein a total of 900 respondents were captured with 200 each coming from Australia, Japan, and India, and 100 each coming from Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. Additionally TRA conducted round table discussions in Australia, India, Japan, and Malaysia for additional qualitative insights from executives.

McDonald’s expands digital payment options with PayMaya

Executive of McDonald’s Philippines and Paymaya pose with BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno (third from left).

McDonald’s has expanded their payment options for their NXTGEN stores. The fast food giant will start accepting PayMaya QR payments in their NXTGEN stores on top of existing card options.

Payment via PayMaya QR code will initially be available in selected stores in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, but will be available in all stores accepting cashless payments next month.

The renewed partnership expands on an earlier collaboration which enabled McDonald’s to accept Visa, Mastercard, and JCB credit, debit, and prepaid card payments either via its new self-ordering kiosks in NXTGEN stores or over the regular store counter.

“We congratulate McDonald’s for being one of the trailblazers in pushing for innovations in the quick-service restaurant industry, and our expanded partnership with them brings the payment experience of customers to a whole new level,” said PayMaya founder and CEO Orlando B. Vea.

The announcement coincided with the reopening of McDonald’s 32nd Street branch, located between 32nd Street and 5th Ave. in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. The newest McDonald NXTGEN store offers the convenience of multipoint ordering. Most noticeable are the selfordering kiosks that allows customers a digitalized alternative to order and pay for their food, providing a more seamless transaction. “We’ve received great feedback from customers about McDonald’s NXTGEN. They have noticed the elevated dining experience that it offers, which is why we are bullish about continuing its roll out to more parts of the country. With our expanded collaboration with PayMaya through QR payments on top of card acceptance in our stores, we are able to offer another convenient way for our customers to pay for their favorites,” said Kenneth S. Yang McDonald’s Philippines president and CEO.

BSP Gov. Diokno tries the new service.

The move to digital payment methods is also in support of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) Nation Retail Payments System (NRPS) initiative which aims to elevate digital transaction in the country. “We laud BSP for their bid to grow the cashless economy in the country. Through their leadership and partnership with a brand like us [McDonald’s] and innovative financial service providers like PayMaya, I believe that their goal of the Philippines to be a 20 percent cashless country by 2020 will be achieved,” Yang added. “We, at the BSP, acknowledge the crucial role the private sector plays in driving the digital transactions in the country. NLEX goes full blast on SFEX Capacity Expansion Project

Executives of NLEX pose for the groundbreaking.

NLEX Corporation is going full blast with the capacity expansion of the 8.2-kilometer Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX) aimed at improving traffic safety and easing travel time to and from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Signaling the start of this milestone project was a groundbreaking ceremony led by NLEX Corporation president and general manager J. Luigi L. Bautista, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman and administrator Wilma T. Eisma, Zambales 1st District representative Jeffrey Konghun, board member Reinhard Jeresano, Hermosa, Bataan mayor Antonio Joseph Inton, and Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) executive director Abraham Sales. The SFEX Capacity Expansion entails construction of two additional expressway lanes, two new bridges at Jadjad and Argonaut, and a new tunnel. This will increase road capacity from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction. The new bridges and a tunnel will be constructed parallel to the existing ones. The new tunnel resembles a horseshoe that will provide structural stability against earth pressure. Also included in the PHP 1.6-billion project are the installation of expressway-standard LED lights as part of the tollway company’s efforts to improve motorists’ visibility when driving at night; the raising of Maritan Highway-

Rizal Highway-Tipo Road junction; and the enhancement of the drainage system to help alleviate flooding in the area. “One of the key drivers of economic growth is a network of high-quality roads. The NLEX Corporation through NLEX, SCTEX, and the soon-to-be expanded SFEX not only intends to accelerate development, but also hopes to encourage travel convenience and road safety,” NLEX Corporation president and general manager J. Luigi L. Bautista said. Targeted for completion by September 2020, the SFEX Capacity Expansion is seen to enhance accessibility and promote travel efficiency on this key road that connects Bataan and Zambales. It is also expected to boost Subic’s competitiveness in trade and tourism industries. “The project will help sustain Subic’s position as a globally competitive trade and tourism hub,” said SBMA chairman and administrator Wilma T. Eisma, adding that “this road expansion will complement SBMA’s infrastructure development program and promotion of Subic as an ideal shipping gateway for businesses in Central and North Luzon.” Looking forward to the SFEX Capacity Expansion Project is Congressman Jeffrey Konghun who believes that improvements in the road network will significantly benefit the province of Zambales. “Because of the smoother and easier travel that this project will

bring, our province will be more viable for local and foreign investments,” Konghun noted. Following the groundbreaking ceremony, a ceremonial tree planting was also held to signify NLEX Corporation’s commitment to plant more trees in its bid to replace those affected by the ongoing road project. “Environmental awareness has always been part of our sustainable development strategy that is why we will conduct tree planting activities in the coming months to help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to cleaner air and healthier ecology along the SFEX,” Bautista explained. The NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the tollways unit of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC).

RELIC

Words by Jose Alvarez

Cybersecurity is of utmost importance today. Simple things such as having a strong password can help protect against this, but people have used passwords such as birthdays, names of pets, and kids (in fact, some people even use the password “password”). Giant corporations have fallen victim to data leaks and compromised systems as well, despite spending lots of money hiring the best in the cybersecurity industry as well as paying money for various anti-virus programs. If a system is breached, it can have long-lasting damage to the companies that they happen to and cost millions of dollars in damage.

One of the most famous movies that highlights the need for cybersecurity is the 1983 film WarGames, which stars Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy. Broderick’s character inadvertently accesses a military supercomputer. Believing it to a computer game, it actually sets off the plot of the movie, which is preventing World War III. The Morris Worm, which was one of the world’s first computer viruses, was created by Robert Tappan Morris, a graduate student at Cornell University. He launched the worm on November 2, 1988 from the systems of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s most prestigious technology universities. The Internet ran in Morris’ family. He was the son of Robert Morris, who was coined as the “Father of the Internet.” The elder Morris was working for the National

92

OCTOBER 2019

Security Administration (NSA) and also worked at Bell Labs and was one of the key contributors to the Unix programming language. The Morris Worm was not written to cause actual damage, but rather to highlight the flaws in computer security. Morris was considered what we would call today a “white hat” hacker, or a hacker who hacks computer systems to point out their vulnerabilities. A “black hat” hacker hacks computer systems out of malice. While describing the worm in full detail could take up more space than we have here, one of the critical errors in spreading the worm was its spreading mechanism. It caused denial of service attacks that infected many computers. Morris wrote the code to copy itself, even if the worm was already on the computer. It was estimated that the worm caused USD 10 million in damage, or around USD 21.7 million when adjusting for inflation.

Morris was charged with violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986. In the 1991 case United States v. Morris, Morris was found guilty of spreading the worm, receiving three years of probation, 400 hours of community service, and USD 10,050 in fines and the costs of his supervision. Morris was also the first person convicted of violating this act. After Morris’s conviction, he went right back to work in the technology sector, receiving a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1999. He co-founded Viaweb in 1995, one of the first web-based applications, with fellow computer scientist Paul Graham. Morris and Graham also started the funding firm Y Combinator in 2005, which helps fund startup companies (Airbnb, Reddit, and Dropbox are among the companies funded through Y Combinator). Morris also became a tenured professor at MIT in 2006. So if you’re interested in cybersecurity, a good starting point would be to look at the Morris worm.
