Vivo V15 Blossom Pink Reviewed by Marlet D. Salazar

Folding phones, pop-up cameras, 5G, and multiple camera lenses. These days, most smartphone manufacturers are too focused on innovations that would set them apart from the others. The “pioneering” tag has never been most sought after than today. While the design is definitely not overlooked, it is still refreshing to see a smartphone built especially for a niche market.

DESIGN Vivo V15 Blossom Pink is as feminine as you can get. The soft pink shade will awaken the Elle Woods in you. It’s almost like an accessory than a smartphone. It won’t look like an oddball when mixed with the contents of a kikay (vanity) kit. The rear surface is glossy and shimmery. The 6.53-inch body can be quite a handful for small hands but with the trend these days, the size is just standard. The selfie camera pops up just a teenie weenie bit and is almost unnoticeable in dim places. Vivo also retains the headphone jack and USB connector.

HARDWARE Vivo V15 Blossom Pink runs on MediaTek Helio P70 2.1GHz octa-core processor with 6GB of RAM. Internal storage is at 128GB so take all the photos and videos you want. It’s dual nano SIM and the cellular network is 4G LTE. The selfie camera, which Vivo is aggressively promoting, is at 32MP f/2.0. The rear triple camera’s specifications include 12MP + 8MP + 5MP. Other features include Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, 4,000mAh battery capacity with Dual-Engine fast charging, a micro USB port, and runs on Android 9 Pie (FunTouch OS 9). The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is easy to use.

USER EXPERIENCE When purchasing smartphones, the camera is the biggest consideration these days. So, props to Vivo for making so much effort in developing the Elevating Front Facing Camera. It also feels sturdy because moving parts in smartphone can get pretty scary. I brought the camera in a concert venue to test the zoom and its low-light capabilities. The output is decent enough and can be used or shared in social media. Since the

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

phone is targeted toward female users who love taking selfies, the 32MP front-facing camera takes “blooming selfies” in natural light. Outdoor selfies really look good with sharp images even without using the beauty filter. The rear camera setup has autofocus that casual snappers can use with ease. We also took videos during a concert and the playback is good and the sound is surprisingly clear. I am amazed that the song drowns other background noise. The battery withstood the grueling use in gaming with its built-in 4,000mAh battery and DualEngine fast charging. Charged it in the morning and using it all day the battery level is still at 30%, which you cannot do with other phones. That alone is remarkable. The bezel-less display is what can win users over because they can play with a “wide-screen” and video watching is also something to look forward to when using the device. Running on MediaTek Helio P70 2.1GHz octa-core processor, the device is able to handle moderate use with ease. The body doesn’t need a housing or casing because even if it’s smooth, it’s not slippery at all.

VALUE

SPECIFICATIONS: Display: 6.53-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ Ultra FullView display @ 2340 x 1080px, 91.64% screen-tobody ratio Corning Gorilla Glass 5 Processor: MediaTek Helio P70 2.1GHz octacore GPU: Mali-G72 MP3 RAM: 6 GB Memory: 128 GB SIM: Dual Front camera: 32 MP with f/2.0 aperture Rear cameras: 12 MP f/1.78 + 8MP f/2.2 + 5MP f/2.4 with AI and LED flash Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou micro USB, fingerprint scanner (rear-mounted), Jovi AI, 3.5mm audio port Operating system: FunTouch OS 9 (based on Android 9) Battery: 4,000mAh battery (with Dual-Engine fast charging) Dimensions: 161.2 x 75.9 x 8.5 mm Weight:186 g What’s Hot: - Color and Design - Clear Audio What’s Not: - Experienced a bit of lag while playing games.

The Vivo V15 has most of the premium features its sibling the Vivo V15 Pro has. It also possesses all the essentials many female users need and the Elevating Selfie Camera is just perfect even for group shots. The wide-angle lens is a surefire way to win a photography enthusiast’s heart. Shelling out PHP 17,999 is a good investment for an eyecandy but full of power accessory.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY Reviewed by Ren Alcantara

Something I have thankfully not outgrown is gaming. Though I don’t get as much time to do so because of the responsibilities of adulthood, it’s still something I look forward to whenever I can find the time. Asus was kind enough to feed this habit with the TUF Gaming FX505DY, which lives up to its name being one of the tougher gaming laptops you can get your hands on. DESIGN The TUF Gaming line of devices is meant to appeal to gamers on a tighter budget, but you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell that just by looking at it. The lid is smooth and black, broken up by the ASUS logo done in gold or red depending on the model, and accent lines that come in from the corners, giving it a dynamic look befitting its gaming status. Cracking open the laptop reveals solid corner hinges, wonderfully thin bezels, and RGB lighting. One nice little touch that I saw and appreciated was a little extension on the spacebar that allows for better reach with the left thumb when in the traditional WASD FPS hand position. The laptop is reasonably skinny, at about an inch thick then closed, and tips the scales at 2.2 kg—light enough to carry around should the need arise. There aren’t a whole lot of ports, with a 3.5mm combo jack, a single USB 2.0 port, 2 type-A USB 3.0 ports, a LAN port, and one HDMI port, along with the jack for power. All of the ports are located on the left edge of the laptop, keeping connectors and cables well away from your mouse. One of the things that makes this laptop special is ASUS’ focus on toughness. The TUF line of laptops passed military-grade MIL-STD-801G tests, making it certified to stand adverse conditions, and the occasional drop or bump.

HARDWARE The FX505 is a gaming laptop by design, and it shows in the specs. Running a powerful Ryzen 5 3550H, coupled with the second-generation Radeon RX 560X GPU, it’s no slouch. While the configuration delivered to our office had just 4GB of 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, it can take up to 32 GB, so you can upgrade should you feel the need to.

so it’s not a major loss. Rounding off the specs is a 48Wh battery for use when you find yourself away from a wall outlet.

USER EXPERIENCE For the course of the review, I switched from my old ASUS Strix, to running the TUF as my daily driver. I installed all my usual daily programs, signed in to my usual accounts, and installed some of the games that were on rotation when the demo unit was sent over. Daily use wasn’t a problem for the FX505. AMD has delivered great processors with decent numbers across its previous generation, but the 4GB of RAM on our test unit throttled the performance somewhat. While general use was smooth for the most part, there were moments when a background process would start, and things would go noticeably slow. It’s wasn’t quite enough for us to write the laptop off as a non-starter, but more RAM should be on the table should you consider this an option. Coupled with a slower HDD, the experience would occasionally take a hit. The gaming experience on the FX505 was adequate. I was able to run a few titles, including CS:GO, The recent Resident Evil 2 remake, and Rainbow 6 Siege, and the games ran fine on Medium settings, with perfectly playable frame rates. There were moments that it would drop to single digits, and I would notice that HDD usage would skyrocket to 100 percent. This might be due to an issue with Windows, or the lack of RAM, but it didn’t happen all too often. I do expect either a Windows update, SSD, or more RAM might make the situation a lot better.

To complement the muscle under the hood, it also comes with a 15-inch, AMD FreeSyncenabled display with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, for smooth, tear-free graphics. You also get a HyperStrike keyboard for quick, responsive keypresses, RGB lighting, and 20 million keystrokes for both great gaming, and comfortable typing.

Comfort was great though. Action games such as R6:Siege were great on the keyboard, with the shallow, positive travel translating to quick in-game results. Once the CPU and GPU start flexing their muscles though, the laptop can get quite loud. The fan did an excellent job in keeping the temps down, so it does get a pass. There’s far more cooling than the CPU and GPU need, so there’s a lot of headroom should you be looking for that.

A slight hit on the spec sheet is the inclusion of an HDD main drive, though you do get 1TB of storage, so this bluntts the blow somewhat. Should you want to, a drive swap is easy enough to accomplish,

Another thing that I appreciated with the FX505 was battery life. While it wasn’t superlative, it did offer about enough power to survive well over five hours for non-gaming tasks.

Realme 3 Pro Reviewed by Jewel Sta. Ana

After its successful arrival in the Philippines seven months ago, the new mobile brand Realme has been making waves in the mid-range category. Some of its best-selling entry-level phones have captured the hearts of consumers. With its latest offering the Realme 3 Pro, the brand is set to elevate the game in the industry by giving a value-for-money phone that doesn’t compromise in performance. DESIGN Inspired by the Le Mans track and racing, the Realme 3 Pro boasts a trendy, gradient back panel with an S-shaped pattern that gives a grating effect when exposed to light. We got our test unit in stunning nitro blue, giving the smartphone a more premium look. It is made with a 3D plastic shell with curves for better grip and streamlined design. Realme’s branding can be seen through the silver logo on the bottom left corner of the panel, as well as the signature yellow rings on its dual cameras. Its fingerprint scanner can also be seen at the back. Power buttons are placed on the right side of the smartphone while the volume rockers and the dual SIM tray and memory card slot are on the left. The speaker grill, 3.5mm audio jack, and the micro-USB port are all placed at the bottom edge.

HARDWARE Sporting a dewdrop notch, the Realme 3 Pro has a bigger display compared to its predecessor. It debuts with a 6.3-inch FHD+ IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and a pixel density of about 408 ppi for better viewing experience. Equally exciting, its internal hardware boasts an octa-core Snapdragon 710 processor backed by Adreno 616 GPU that promises buttery smooth frame rates to gameplay. It has a whopping 6 GB RAM and an expandable 128 GB of internal storage (up to 256 GB via micro SD slot) that can accommodate even the most demanding mobile games in terms of memory space. For mobile photography junkies, the Realme 3 Pro offers a dual camera system which consists of 16-megapixel Sony IMX 519 and 5-megapixel rear sensors. Together with its 25-megapixel selfie camera, it is backed-up with AI scene detection and AI Beauty for better postprocessing. Among its highlights include the 4,045 mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 fast charging which will be discussed further.

Realme 3 Pro definitely deserves to be called a real gaming pro phone with its GameSpace mode, a dedicated feature that blocks notification and frees up more RAM while playing. It also improves battery life and data network to provide uninterrupted gameplay of online FPS and MOBA titles. I didn’t encounter any lags when I tried playing Mobile Legends through Wi-Fi and data connection, which is quite surprising. It delivers super smooth performance even though there are apps running on the background. I also liked how snappy its facial and fingerprint unlock is, and it’s probably one of the fastest in its class. The massive battery which supports fast charging through VOOC 3.0 technology is what I really loved about this phone. It only took me about an hour to fill the battery from 5% to 100% and it lasts a day with regular use. Realme’s dedicated UI, the ColorOS 6, is based on the latest Android Pie. However, it feels dated with its animations and transitions. Some of the pre-installed apps cause bloatware to the device which is a major turn off for those who prefer a simple yet fast mid-range phone. Unlike its previous models, the Realme 3 Pro is calibrated with neutral colors. It has a color calibration tool that can be tweaked according to your liking. The screen can go up to 400nits of brightness when used outdoors, making the device usable even under direct sunlight. Another noteworthy feature is the pre-installed Night Shield mode that protects users with sensitive eyes from eye strains.

gems on its crown that other brands in its class cannot match. True to its motto, the device is a real gaming pro. SPECIFICATIONS: Display: 6.3-inch FHD+ IPS LCD, 2340 x 1080 resolution Rear camera: 16 MP Sony IMX 519 + 5MP with f/1.7 and f/2.4 apertures and dual pixel PDAF, AI recognition, AI Beauty Front camera: 25 MP with f/2.0 aperture Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 AIE, octa-core RAM: 6 GB Memory: 128 GB Operating System: ColorOS 6.0 (based on Android Pie) Battery: 4,045 mAh battery (with 20 W VOOC 3.0) Colors: lightning purple, nitro blue, and carbon grey Dimensions: 156.8 x 74.2 x 8.3 mm Weight: 172 g What’s Hot: -Great battery life with flash charging -Elegant back design -Remarkable performance What’s Not: -Doesn’t support NFC technology -Fussy software -Poor audio quality

As for the camera, the phone really shines on low light shooting. You can get clean images even without turning on the night mode. Should you want brighter photos with minimal noise, just turn on the night mode in the camera app.

VALUE Putting it with an attractive price point, the Realme 3 Pro is a value-for-money smartphone that every gamer should own. At PHP 12,990 (4 GB RAM + 64 GB memory) and PHP 14,990 (6 GB RAM + 128 GB memory), it has a number of

Innovations in Automotive Technology Words by Arnel Doria Art by Simon Engracial

“You’ve come a long way, baby.” This advertising slogan was popularized by Virginia Slims cigarettes in the 1970’s. Today, you probably couldn’t find a more appropriate description for the automobile. From the original horseless carriage that could run, stop and turn, in the course of a hundred plus years, the motor car has undergone thousands of innovations on the engine, transmission, brakes, steering systems, and wheels as well as numerous additions for convenience, safety, and comfort. Engine technology—whether internal combustion or electric motor-powered— is now focused on achieving maximum performance with excellent fuel efficiency. There are now several options for transferring engine power to the wheels: manual and automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions, dual-clutch systems, and the like.

entertainment system, from optional aircons to built-in intelligent climate control systems, and even adjustable heated seats and many other amenities. One can find hundreds of thousands of copyrights registered for leading-edge technologies for the modern automobile. Car company R&D teams, engineers, and designers from the academe and the private sector continue to introduce enhancements for nextgeneration vehicles. This year, new technologies are expected to be unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show this coming October, but that will deserve another write-up. For now, we list down the top innovations made available with the latest crop of new vehicles released in 2018.

Stopping a car now involves an advanced braking system with numerous assist features such as anti-lock brake systems (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), etc. Even the simple act of turning the car has not been forgotten, with powerassist, electric steering, 4-wheel steering, speedsensors, etc.

Automobiles are much more than just an engine, transmission, interior, and tires. They are packed with the latest technology and incredible innovations that make vehicles smarter, more efficient, and safer.

And convenience has been greatly enhanced from the basic AM/FM radio to the full

Here’s our round-up of the latest vehicle and technology innovations:

Nissan: VCR-Turbo The engine is the heart-and-soul of a car; it supplies the motive power to move the vehicle. Nissan’s new variable compression rate turbo-charge system could be a landmark development for internal combustion engine (ICE) technology. These days, the buzzword is all about electric vehicles—installed in hybrids (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), battery- (BEV) and fuel cellpowered (FCEV) electrics. In keeping with this new trend, Toyota Motor Philippines organized the country’s first Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conference last May 2019 to push for more electric-powered vehicles on local roads. Owing to zero emission of harmful exhaust gases, electric-powered vehicles are seen as beneficial for the environment and public health. But the internal combustion engine is not yet done. In their forecast, the Department of Trade and Industry’s Board of Investments (DTI-BOI) noted that by 2030, 65% of vehicles in the

Philippines will still be ICE-driven. Even though it is considered mature technology, there have been continuous advances to make ICE more fuel-efficient and environment-friendly. We’ve seen the development of variable valve timing technology, and the turbo charge system has grown by leaps and bounds. We have to mention, too, the installation of more unforgiving exhaust systems. In the realm of turbo-charge engines, Nissan’s new variable compression rate turbo deserves a closer look. The VCR-Turbo engine can adjust its compression ratio at any time. The system has a setting for fuel-efficient driving, but can change to high performance driving at the touch of the throttle. The change in setting is very subtle and requires not much input from the driver. The system addresses the drivers’ holy grail: to have both fuel efficiency and high performance in one engine.

BMW: Wireless Electric Car Charging System Wireless charging is now seeing more widespread application in our everyday gadgets— smartphones, smartwatches, even toothbrushes. Why not wireless charging for electric vehicles? BMW is about to answer the call with its wireless charging pad for electric vehicles. Instead of driving into the garage then parking and plugging in to an outlet, simply drive over the charging pad

to top up the battery. No more cables to lay out and reel in after charging. Wireless charging is both convenient and easy. As long as there is no power outage in the area, your EV will always have stored power when you start up your car. This is perfect for plug-in (PHEV) and battery powered (BEV) electric vehicles. It’s now on a pilot program in the United States, and for sure it won’t long before it gets to other shores.

Subaru: DriverFocus The key to driving safe is for the driver to pay attention to the road and his surroundings. Subaru’s DriverFocus technology takes the driver assist / driver alert features to the next level. These are features that prompt the driver to “take a break” or “time for a cup of coffee” when it sense that the driver is not making any steering inputs. Unlike systems that use a torque sensor on the steering wheel, DriverFocus uses infrared facial recognition technology. It monitors the driver’s face to see if he is distracted or shows signs of falling asleep. If it senses that the driver is not focused on driving, it gives out audible and visual warnings. In addition, its facial recognition can store data for up to five drivers, with custom settings for each one, and automatically adjusting to whoever is on the driver seat. Information for the entire family can be stored with matching memory features and safety settings for each member It also works alongside the Subaru EyeSight collision mitigation system with preloaded automatic emergency braking settings.

Hyundai: Rear Occupant Alert Children have died from being left inside locked cars. Some cars come with a rear occupant reminder system that gives out an audible reminder and a dashboard prompt to check the back seats. Over time, though, users get accustomed to the warning and learn to ignore it. Hyundai’s system is different. It uses interior motion sensors to detect movement. The Hyundai system looks for movement in the cabin. Up to 24 hours after the driver has left the vehicle, it sends out a notification through its Blue Link app, sends an email, and blows the car horn to attract attention. This is a system that can actually save lives.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Hyundai: Safe Exit Assist If the sensors detect a car or bicycle approaching from either the driver or passenger side, this system will prevent you from unlocking the child lock or a child opening the door. It will show a warning in the cluster and sound an alert. If the child lock is already unlocked, the cluster will notify the driver and an alert tone will be heard if it senses an approaching vehicle. This not only keeps passengers safe, but also prevents motorcyclists and bicyclist from being “doored.” The system uses the blind spot monitoring system, and it works even if the engine is not running.

Audi: Active Suspension Mercedes Benz: MBUX System Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX system is the next generation in infotainment systems. There are two huge screens: one for the instrument cluster and another for the infotainment touchscreen display. There is a separate touch-based controller for people who are not comfortable with touch screens. It also responds to voice commands like Siri or Alexa. Start with “Hey Mercedes,” followed by the command to get a response. The system is also connected so it can get information from the world wide web. The voice prompts are pretty intuitive. Like the latest smartphones, the MBUX system remembers the user’s speech patterns and become even more responsive over time. The whole system is developed by Mercedes Benz and will soon be made available even on A-class, which means more Mercedes fans will be able to enjoy the latest in infotainment systems.

The Audi A8, and its counterparts in the Volkswagen group, has an active suspension system that can be set to Sporty or Comfortable driving mode, depending on driver preference. But this is not new. The latest active suspension system has been engineered for improved protection in case of a crash. If the car senses a possible hit from the side, the suspension quickly raises the side of the car about to be hit. The system acts in half a second and raises the side by 80 millimeters if it detects a collision faster than 25 km/h. The vehicle about to crash will hit the stiffer components on the Audi’s chassis that have been reinforced to handle a crash. This could help save lives and prevent injuries.

Audi: Virtual Mirrors The Audi system replaces the regular side mirrors with small cameras, resulting in a lower drag co-efficient (0.28). Inside the cabin, LED screens are positioned on the door sill just below where the regular side mirrors would be. Touch controls ergonomically installed within easy reach of the driver allows adjustment of angles, as well as zoom in on the images. With light sensors, the cameras adapt to the changing lighting conditions for image consistency even in the dark.

Cadillac: Super Cruise Super Cruise is the most advanced Level 2, semi-autonomous driving aid. By using a driver-facing camera and digitally mapped highway information, it allows the driver to take his/her hands off the steering wheel. All other systems require the driver’s hand on the wheel. The camera monitors that you are watching the road ahead and ready to take over. The system is disabled once the camera senses that the driver is not paying attention.

The future of cars is directed toward electrified, connected and autonomous driving. With growing concerns about environmental degradation and safety issues, the major manufacturers are in a race to develop advanced automobiles toward sustainable mobility. Here are some of the key issues for the cars of the future.

IMPROVED ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE The global supply of fossil fuels is finite. Electricity is not. But before electric vehicles can replace internal combustion engine vehicles, they need to have better electric power storage for longer driving range. Ongoing research is focused on developing higher-density batteries and, beyond that, supercapacitors. Studies have shown the latter to be more energy-dense than lithium-ion batteries, holding 180 watt-hours per kilogram as against only 100-120 watt-hours for traditional lithium-ion. Once fully-developed, supercapacitors are capable of energy densities surpassing the current range of electric vehicles.

FULLY AUTONOMOUS DRIVING SYSTEMS Car companies predict that autonomous cars will be the norm by 2025. These cars will have a blanket of sensors to give the system a 360-degree view of the driving environment. The blind spots, the bane of human drivers, will be virtually eliminated. Several types of sensors are being developed by car engineers with no clear indication yet which one will be most effective—lidar, radar, laser, or video cameras. Beyond the sensors, autonomous driving systems need advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret all the data inputs to keep the vehicle safely on the road. Various programs and settings need to be learned and stored so the vehicle can react to situations as they happen. With cars doing the driving, humans can then put their commuting time to more productive use, like keeping up with social media.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Artificial intelligence (AI) is the main driving force behind autonomous vehicles. Since no two situations will ever be the same, it will be a big challenge to overcome this. Self-driving cars need to react instantaneously to fast-changing circumstances such as other vehicles, pedestrians, and road conditions. Car companies need to develop programs to manage big data analysis and machine learning so cars can perform like human drivers. The system will require tremendous processing power and an advanced generation of sensors. Fortunately, the major car companies are already into AI research, as witnessed by this writer in the last Tokyo Motor Show.

TEST MOBILITY DRIVE

KTM RC 390 Reviewed and Photos by Ren Alcantara

The first time I ever saw a sportbike, was at about 8 years old. It was in a store in Makati--Park Square, I think-and I remember being absolutely fascinated by it. That day started my love affair with motorcycles. Now, as a grown man, and with a bike of my own, I still feel giddy at the sight and sound of a nice sportbike. KTM, a brand that has made quite a splash in the country thanks to their 390 Duke, was kind enough to let me borrow their RC 390 to review. Some may scoff at the small displacement, or the single cylinder. I think, however, as many like me, that this is much more a sportbike than many people give it credit for. DESIGN There’s something about the RC 390 that just revs my engine. It’s a combination of sharp lines, an aggressive, low-slung stance, and slim tail that comes together to make a bike that in my eyes, has looks that rivals any screaming 600. It has a distinct face that’s quite unlike anything else out there, and if you weren’t standing right next to it, you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking it was a bigger bike than it was. It looks like it means business, and dares you to sit in the saddle. It comes in an orange, white,

36

july 2019

and black that’s distinctly KTM, and reinforces the feeling that you’re part of a racing team, without looking garish. The headlight, which is a love-itor-hate-it kind of deal, has me sitting firmly in the “love it” camp, and gives it a look that won’t be mistaken as any other bike on the road. Seriously, the longer I stare at it, the better it looks. I doubt you will feel any different.

HARDWARE The beating heart of the RC 390 is a single-cylinder 373.2cc water-cooled, four-stroke engine. This puts out about 43 HP, which might not seem like much,

but in a bike that’s all of 147 kg dry, it goes a long way. To match the power from the engine are a 320mm rotor at the front, and a 230mm rotor for the rear wheel. Brakes are ByBre, which, if the name hasn’t clued you in, are developed by Brembo, so you know they’re up to snuff. ABS comes standard on the RC. The tank takes 10L of fuel, and with a rated fuel consumption of about 3.5L for 100Km, this is going to put quite a few miles between refills. The dash is spartan, compared with the full-color digital deal on the Duke, but it’s plenty informative, and very easy to read. Everything, including the fuel gauge, is clear with a quick glance down. You even

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

get real-time fuel consumption, which is quite a nice bonus. Overall, it’s a very newbie-friendly bike.

USER EXPERIENCE Despite its position as a starter bike, it’s more than possible for an older hand to have fun with it, and I had every intention of doing so. It’s incredibly agile, even compared to the already capable Duke. It takes rider input very quickly, and doesn’t require much persuasion to change direction at all. The throttle is also quite eager, but unlike the Duke, the more aggressive riding position feels less like it’s trying to buck you off, even with a heavier hand on the throttle. There’s plenty of room to tuck in if you want to take full advantage of the windscreen, but also enough space to ride a little more upright, as long as you have the height for it. As a commuter, it performs well. It’s slim enough to get between lanes, with more than enough pull to get off the line and out of a sticky situation. The engine makes plenty of torque down low, and will more than adequately pull under the 2000 RPM line, and delivers power smoothly until the shift light blinks on. It’s also pleasantly smooth for a single, without the hand-numbing buzz that plagues many other thumpers out there when you stay pegged at higher RPMs for a while. Riding at night is made pleasant with the bright headlamp, though I would appreciate a little more throw, as this bike is meant to leave asphalt behind it quickly. Make no mistake, this is a sportbike. The riding position will soon take a toll on your back, and

if, like me, you’re all of five feet and four inches, you might not have the reach to sit more upright in the saddle. It’s not quite as cramped and aggressive as a 600 supersport, but it’s slightly less uncomfortable than the sport tourer on which I am accustomed. It’s a plus then, that you can zip happily past traffic and get to your destination quickly, before your back starts complaining. The gearbox is top-notch, popping into each gear reassuringly every time. I had no false neutrals, and the gear indicator on the dash, as well as a neutral light, reassure newer riders who might want a little confirmation that everything is going according to plan. For me, the RC 390 checks all the right boxes. It looks great, feels planted and sure in the corners, pulls out of them just as well, and commutes more than acceptably as a daily driver. It’s a blast to ride, and each time I hopped on, I had a little smile on my face, because I knew I would be having fun getting to where I was going.

VALUE At about PHP 300,000, the RC 390 is among one of the more expensive single-cylinder bikes out there, but given the racing DNA, exceptional performance, great looks, and superb handling, it’s worth every peso. While it’s capability as a commuter will be limited by how long your back can take it, you’re not going to regret the purchase once you take it onto the track, or up some nice, twisty mountain roads.

What’s Hot: -Gorgeous -So wonderfully agile -Great, predictable power

What’s Not: -A bit pricey -Not built for comfort

Bottomline: As a starter bike, track bike, or fun little weekend ride, the RC 390 is hard to beat.

Subaru Forester 2.0i-L Reviewed and Photos by Ren Alcantara

Generally speaking, our vehicles are capable of more than we put them through. While they’re perfectly happy going on the straight roads from our homes, to our offices, to the grocery store, when pushed, they can do amazing things. This holds even truer for Subaru’s Forester. A highly capable city vehicle, it’s capable of greater things that one might think. We got to take one out for a road trip well outside of the city limits to see what else the compact SUV is capable of. DESIGN The 2019 Forester has been updated with slight changes to the grille, a bit more cargo space, and a few tweaks here and there. Overall though, they’re clearly not changing a winning strategy, keeping much of the Forester the same. It maintains the high, confident stance that has made the marque great for both city and backroad driving, and long trips with the whole family. Our test drive was done in a very clean Crystal White Pearl, with subtle chrome accents here and there. The Forester is deceptively large for its class, but it’s not until

http://www.subaru-global.com/ebrochure/Forester/2018my/EC/ mobile/all/interior-360

38

july 2019

you walk up to it that you’ll notice. The purposeful, upswept line that starts from the grille, to the rear of the SUV gives it a dynamic look, and the two-tone wheels rounds the image off nicely. It’s as good-looking as it has ever been, and is low-key enough not to get too much attention.

HARDWARE The current Forester gets a 2.0 liter engine mated to a CVT to drive power to each of the four wheels. The DOHC, 16-Valve, Flat 4 lump delivers 156 PS at 6000 RPM, and 196 Nm of

torque at 4,000 RPM. It might have a smaller, 1995cc displacement than the now-phased out 2.5 Turbo of the previous generation, but the numbers show that it’s still a very capable power plant. Built upon Subaru’s Global Platform, the New Forester promises greater rigidity and strength, at less weight, and with better steering characteristics. The combination of the chassis and better handling characteristics make for a vehicle with superb handling and comfort.

One of the great extras included in our review vehicle is Subaru’s revolutionary Eyesight technology, which allows for a whole host of driver aids. This is one of the 2019 Forester’s greatest features, and something I personally enjoyed using a lot, but I’ll get into that in the meat of the review.

USER EXPERIENCE I had been looking forward to reviewing the new Forester since I first got to spend some time with it at the launch. Thanks to our friends at Subaru, I was able to reserve a slot to test one just in time for a trip to Lake Caliraya at the start of last month. This was the perfect opportunity to take R5, and see what the Forester could do on a mix of roads and elevation changes. Being a major outing with about 15 of our friends participating, so there was a lot of cargo. Being one of the larger vehicles, my wife and I agreed to take two passengers, along with their luggage, a cooler, and a sizeable amount of supplies. Even without dropping the rear seats, the Forester had room enough for a large cooler, five bags, several bags of groceries, and a crate each of eggs and bottles. It may not look it, but the Forester can hold a staggering amount of cargo. And it all managed to fit under the tonneau cover. This extra space also translated into more room in the cabin. I’m not sure how they managed it, but it really does seem bigger on the inside. With passengers and cargo loaded up, we left Katipunan at about 3 p.m., to try and get ahead of the traffic. We were unsuccessful. Construction just before SM Marikina had us driving through what felt like rush hour traffic. Taking the opportunity to keep my gas foot rested, I enlisted the help of Subaru’s Eyesight technology and engaged Active Cruise control. It works best with slow, crawling traffic, the likes of which we were facing at the start of our journey. I am happy to report that it worked great. It accurately determined the speed of the vehicle before us, and even through changing speeds, it kept a consistent distance, requiring no additional input from me. One thing I did find though, was that it doesn’t take into account just how aggressive we Filipino drivers can be, so the very safe distance it kept from the car it was following would sometimes create

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

large enough gaps for jeeps to force themselves into. Still, it was more than worth it for the convenience of literally just having to steer for the entire span of traffic. Finally having left the traffic behind, we began the ascent through Antipolo. The current Forester might not pack as much grunt as the previous XT model, but it was plenty adequate, thanks to the responsive paddle shifters. Overtaking on an uphill, fully loaded with people and cargo is quite an ask, and looking at it, you might think the size of the Forester might make that a problem. A quick drop down a gear or two, along with a generous application of the accelerator made this a non-issue. It’s very quick to respond to throttle input, with the boxer engine growling into action and pushing you back and down into your seat.

VALUE At just about PHP 1.6 million, is the 2019 Forester 2.0i-L worth it? I give that question a wholehearted Yes. Great performance, plenty of space, and more creature comforts than I could even fit into this review (that multi-info display is SO handy!), make for an SUV that fills the needs of small families, and people who look forward to having a car that’s fun to drive. Now to try and convince my wife that we need a new vehicle…

Handling is not the first thing you think a crossover SUV would take to well, but the Forester defies the norm. As anyone who has taken R5 can attest, it’s a twisty, perilous road. The Forester is much more agile than it has a right to be, easily taking tight turns, and changing direction without missing a beat. I was pushing quite hard, with little regard for my passengers, and it felt like they would tap out far before the Forester would. The steering was responsive, and driving through corners, accelerating on the way out put a smile on my face every time. Taking the trip as fast as safety would allow, I also appreciated the sure-footedness the Forester provided. Traction control and AWD made even the trickiest segments fun to blast through. While my passengers did tend to move around a bit in their seats, they couldn’t complain about comfort, as the plush leather, great cushioning, and snug seats kept them in place nicely. The Forester kept pace with my driving, and it never left me feeling like I needed more than it could deliver. This came at a bit of a price though. By the end of our roughly two hour, 15 minute journey, I found our fuel consumption to be about 8km/L. This wasn’t terrible, as we did make quite an ascent, and I was driving with no regard for fuel economy, but numbers like that can burn through the tank’s 63 liter capacity quite quickly.

What’s Hot: -Superb performance -Loads of cargo space -Eyesight is actually useful

What’s Not: -Fuel efficiency takes a hit

Bottomline: It might be the most fun crossover SUV out there now.

MOBILITY

Tesla: From EV to Autopilot By Mia Carisse Barrientos

Tesla is an American electric-automobile manufacturer synonymous with innovation. The company gained a head start in the industry by reenvisioning electronic vehicles and pushing the green movement forward. But before the buzz and Elon Musk, there was the GM EV1. The first mass-produced and purpose-designed electric car by General Motors (GM) was leased in the late ‘90s but was later discontinued. GM deemed it too niche for the then fickle automobile market. Its death, however, sparked a dream in many: a zero-emission future. In 2003, Silicon Valley engineers and entrepreneurs Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning took up the mantle and started Tesla Motors. The company named after Serbian American inventor Nikola Tesla, known for his creation of electromagnetic devices, once again jump-started the development of electric vehicles (EV).

Musk EV enthusiast and PayPal co-founder Elon Musk joined the company in 2004 as an investor and took on various roles including designing cars and serving as the chairman. Five years and several prototypes later, Tesla released its first electric sports car, the Roadster. Compared to the EV1 which was powered by lead-acid batteries, the Roadster ran on lithiumion battery cells and could cover a distance of 300 kilometers upwards per charge, making it more sustainable than the former. The Roadster could also accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds and boasted speeds up to 201 kilometers per hour, which were numbers unmatched for an all-electric vehicle during its time. The Roadster, which was based on the Lotus Elise chassis, not only looked good; it was also sturdy despite its being lightweight. This can be attributed to its carbon fiber body. Since it was powered by lithium-ion, it could also be

conveniently recharged from a standard electric outlet. Given its advanced features, the Roadster was a premium with its price tag of $109,000. Musk announced that profits from the sports car will be used in developing affordable EVs and other electric power generation options. Model S In 2009, the brand showed off a prototype of the Model S’s which would replace the Roadster and begin production in 2012. The all-electric luxury sedan was to be offered with three battery options. The highest configuration of the Model S could travel at 600 kph and accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in less than 5 seconds. The Model S’ battery was stowed underneath its floor giving it more storage space and improved handling. It was acclaimed for its exceptional design and performance. The 2014 Model S—and other Tesla vehicles released afterward—also featured the Tesla Autopilot, advanced hardware that allows semi-autonomous driving. This provided a glimpse into future self-driving cars.

Having found the rhythm, Tesla would showcase the crossover Model X prototype just months after the Model S’s introduction. The prototype stirred up excitement with its futuristic “Falcon Wing” doors which open upwards instead of sidewards. It could seat up to seven passengers and boasted a maximum battery range of more than 475 km/h. Delivering on its promise of more affordable Tesla cars, the Model 3 was introduced. The Standard Range base model, which was offered at $35,000, could still be categorized as a luxury but is significantly priced lower than other Tesla models. The base model could achieve more than 200 km/h speeds and could go from 0 to 96 km/h in a little over 5 seconds. Beyond EVs and Semi-Automation After securing funding from investors and going public in 2010, Tesla became more than just an electric automaker. It changed its name to Tesla Inc. in 2017, making it known that the company has evolved into something bigger than it originally intended.

Photos from: Tesla website

In its Gigafactories, the company developed solar energy products for homes and businesses and lithium-ion batteries. The company also built Superchargers, eventually dubbed Tesla Stations, across the United States and Europe for Tesla owners to charge batteries for free and provide the service of replacing Model S battery packs. Musk is also vocal about the many modern technologies they are working on. Despite changes in leadership, criticisms, and autopilot troubles, Tesla’s achievements and proEarth influence are unparalleled for a company that has only a little over a decade under its belt. At the rate it has been churning out new innovations, it is only to be expected that greater things are yet to come from Tesla.

The Formula E Evolution Putting passion for racing together with care for the environment Words By Nicole C. Batac

Motorsport has always been about speed and power—roaring engines packed into incredibly fast cars. A racing series like Formula One is more than just the prestige of winning races in cars dubbed as being the fastest, most powerful out there. The less obvious aim is to push forward automotive technology. The sport is a hotbed of innovation. But it hasn’t put its focus on innovating a growing, essential market— electric vehicles.

Enter Formula E, a new all-electric racing series started in 2014 by Alejandro Agag. A selfproclaimed racing man, Agag said he wanted to put his passion for racing together with his care for the environment. It is hard to start a new racing series these days. The established ones, like F1, NASCAR, and IndyCar, have been struggling with viewership and attendance over the years. How can you get racing fans to care about a new series? Especially one that didn’t have the same speed and roaring gas engines of its competitors. Formula E offers an interesting proposition, though. The idea is to bring this racing series right into cities affected by climate change. You get races in places like Marrakesh, Hong Kong, Mexico, Paris, New York, etc. It promotes the idea of clean energy in a fun way. Perhaps even encourage viewers to consider getting an electric car instead of a gas one.

But the series isn’t without its own set of problems. The electric racecars couldn’t last through the entire race, so drivers needed to swap cars in the middle of a race. And with fully - electric powertrains, these racecars sounded like life-size radio-controlled cars. The racecars were spec cars in a lot of ways. Except for the electric drivetrain, the chassis, aerodynamics, and tires were specified by the FIA (the same governing body in charge of F1). All these limiting factors were not exactly appealing to long-time racing fans. Change was afoot, though. Four years into the series and in its fifth season, Formula E was ready to introduce its second-generation car or the Gen2 car as it’s being called. But what’s new this time around? The cars have been refined to make it easier for the drivers to push harder and to last the entire length of the 45-minute race. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the changes: Beauty Spark Racing Technology and the FIA designed the new “Batmobile-esque” cars. The aim was to improve the efficiency of the racecars. The Gen2 car trades its rear wing for a smaller X-type wing. Now, the cars get most of the downforce from the underfloor. A huge diffuser provides the grip needed even when

Front (ABB Formula E Championship)

the cars are right behind their competition. The combination of smaller wings and the diffuser allows for more wheel-to-wheel action without protruding parts getting in the way. The front wheels are now covered to reduce the way spinning wheels affect the efficiency of airflow around the car. Michelin developed the new Pilot Sport all-weather tire, which is designed to meet the demands of electric street racing. The wheels are lighter than their predecessors and have lower rolling resistance, too. Like the other FIA single-seater championship series, the Gen2 car gets the halo head protection device. Made with high-strength titanium and measuring 4mm thick, the halo can withstand 14 other Formula E cars stacked on top of it. Brawn The old Formula E car had a maximum power output of 200kW (around 268 horsepower). The Gen2 car tops out at 250kW (around 335hp). It can reach a maximum speed of 280km/h and it can reach 100km/h in the time it took you to read this sentence. Depending on what session they’re running, the power unit may be limited to different maximum levels.

The new battery has almost doubled in range this season. It has 54kWh of usable energy that is capable of powering an average German household for over five days. And while it can finally last the duration of the race, it takes only 45 minutes to charge, too. Brains The innovation doesn’t stop with the cars, though. A new sporting dynamic allows teams to play around with strategy. Called Attack Mode, the teams are alerted just before the race starts about how many times it must be used and the duration. By passing through the Attack Mode Activation Zone, drivers can race at faster speeds for a period of time. It’ll cost them time initially, but it gives them that extra boost they might need to, for example, overtake an opponent. It’s a strategic play that helps keep the race exciting. It joins the Fan Boost mode, which gives the popular drivers an extra dose of power courtesy of fans who vote for them ahead and during the first part of the race. The halo on the cars shows if the driver is using Attack Mode or Fan Boost. It lights red for Attack Mode and purple for Fan Boost. If the driver opts to use both modes at the same time, both lights are shown.

It’s impressive to think about what the sport has achieved in the time it’s been around. While the current 2018/19 season is coming to a close, the development doesn’t stop here. With big name manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Nissan, etc. involved in the series, it allows for better development of the racecars, but also of future electric vehicles these automakers will produce. What an exciting time for the sport and for our roads, too! Back (ABB Formula E Championship)

New vision: An extra pair of eyes Aiming for road safety with 360-degree car cameras By Gerry Gaviola

Anybody who’s driven a car knows that full awareness is key for a safe and enjoyable ride. What if, cars were equipped with an extra pair of eyes to keep us even safer? It’s amazing where new car technology is heading, but until the day comes when we could hop into our self-driving cars and safely get from point A to point B effortlessly and safely, getting behind the wheel will always require us to be our most responsible selves. It cannot be stressed enough that when on the road, safety is key, especially when a simple mistake could cost people their lives.

If numbers were to put things into perspective, then it would matter if you knew that about a million people lose their lives in car-related accidents each year. On average, that’s 3,000 casualties a day. For the lucky ones who survive these types of lethal encounters, some may recall scratching of heads, and the common, “Oops, I didn’t see you” excuse. But what if, car technology

44

July 2019

made it near impossible for a person to get into a car accident? Enter cameras in cars. An extra pair of eyes, and the technology that comes with it. may just be the solution to enhance awareness on the road. Last year, countries like the United States and Canada have made it mandatory for 2018 and newer

vehicles to be equipped with a backup camera. Enhanced rearward visibility, as their respective safety institutions put it, play a key role in preventing backover accidents, of which, children are most affected. Although regulation for better vehicle visibility only recently becoming a mandatory in some countries, the technology that enhances driver visibility has actually been around for a while.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Back-up camera In 1956, Chuck Jordan, the head of design for General Motors, debuted the Buick Centurion XP-301 concept car. Sporting a futuristic exterior and interior design, the vehicle didn’t fall short in hi-tech offerings as well. The revolutionary Buick model was equipped with a backup camera, that was mounted on the trunk, and with strategically hidden wiring that fed the feed to the vehicle’s dash. In 1972, Volvo’s experimental safety car likewise had a camera installed, but it didn’t make it into production for it’s consumer models. And in about 20 years after, the 1991 Toyota Soarer Limited became the first production vehicle to be equipped with a backup camera.

field of view which overlapped, eliminating the gap in immediate surroundings.

Another milestone was hit in the 2002 New York International Auto Show where Nissan’s Infiniti luxury division introduced the Q45 flagship sedan with a state- of- the art backup camera offering which consisted of a license platemounted camera at the rear which transmitted an image to a 7-inch LCD screen. Bouncing to 2007, three more cameras are added to the Infiniti EX35, two which are mounted into the bottom of the exterior mirrors, and one in the front grille. All cameras featured a 180- degree

Now in 2019, the same technology exists, but in the form of 360- degree glory. Similar to how the 180- degree systems worked, modern systems are able to show a perspective similar to that of a traditional rearview camera that faces outwards. BMW has even gone as far as displaying a car and its immediate surroundings from a certain angle—perfect for parking in our eskenitas (alley) or in narrow old European streets. Likewise, the vehicle alerts you when collision is about to happen.

Photo from Buick Centurion press release.

Yet one of the most interesting implementations is probably the integration of a bird’s eye view. Digitally stitching the camera’s field of vision, some manufacturers such as Nissan have gone so far as to provide a top-down/bird’s eye view of the vehicle. Nissan compares this technology to reading a book from an imperfect angle, riddled with distortions, versus a straight down angle absent of any. Like something out of video game, the system is able to eliminate distortion via software thus providing an image where the vehicle is located at the center, and where its surrounds are seen.

Buick Centurion XP-301 Buick model equipped with a backup camera

Live feed Without a doubt, adding cameras into vehicles heightens awareness. For one, mounting them outside the vehicle and proving a live feed to the dashboard LCD or through the rear mirror feed eliminates obstructions such as seeing the rear seats and passengers when using the traditional rearview mirror. Cadillac, realizing that the technology does indeed increase rearward awareness by about 300% percent, has even replaced some of its models’ mirrors with displays and cameras.

Photo from Google images.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Today’s surround view camera works in a similar way as Jordan’s original concept in such a way that it uses the basic setup of a mounted camera and an accompanying display. As the system further develops, we see more and more benefits such as eliminating blind spots, and having the driver truly view the car’s driving condition. 3D stitching is also one concept we’ve seen into fruition, as with night vision capable cameras mounted in cars. The possibilities are infinite, and it’s the nice to hear that the absolute goal of this technology is to make driving easier and safer than before.

Role of 5G in autonomous cars Words by Marlet D. Salazar Art by Zeil Romero and Simon Engracial

Telecommunications firm PLDT Inc. announced earlier this year its partnership with global technology company Cisco to provide 5G-ready IP transport network in the Philippines. This underscores the role of 5G technology in the future of transportation, whether its autonomous cars or not. Transportation is just one of the many use cases of 5G technology, which is basically the fifth generation of cellular network technology that promises a much faster internet speed than 4G. Internet of Business site reported that with 5G coming, there will be 125 million connected vehicles by 2022. According to Intel, “5G will drive innovation across verticals, unleashing a superhighway of information traveling at extreme speeds over transformed mobile networks.” The technology company predicts that by 2050, the value of passenger economy will reach $7 trillion with pilotless vehicles used for service and goods delivery contributing $200 million. Ericsson, a Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company, said in a blog post that “the future of connected vehicles lies with 5G.” But more than the need for a high-speed connection, the role of 5G in autonomous cars is crucial especially with data traveling from the car to the cloud. Ericsson said a popular case for connected vehicles is sharing braking data. It cites as an example the need for these pilotless

46

july 2019

cars to “communicate” with other pilotless cars on the road. Data collection is paramount not only in the effectiveness of self-driving vehicles but as a safety feature as well. If the connection is slow, the chance of delay in response is quite significant and the delay in relaying information among cars may pose risks. Ericsson also advised automakers not to focus too much on 5G alone but should also pair it with edge computing. Edge computing is a distributed computing paradigm which brings computer data storage closer to the location where it is needed. Computation is largely or completely performed on distributed device nodes. In terms of entertainment, Intel and production outfit Warner Bros. displayed at CES 2019 the potential of immersive entertainment in a “firstof-its-kind concept car.” Guests experienced a virtual ride and 270-degree entertainment through the streets of Gotham City. This is Intel’s response to its prediction of passenger economy, which the company believes will “free more than 250 million hours of commuting time per year in the world’s most congested cities. What’s more, Intel predicts

a total addressable market of $200 billion from rising consumer use of new in-vehicle applications and content.” Providing entertainment, as well as route and road safety situation, needs low latency connection that 5G and edge computing promise to deliver. Information such as ETA or notification of simply buckling up is seen to be a few of the important features in autonomous vehicles. However, in a report by Brian Santo of EDN Network, automakers and technology partners who were at the CES 2019 did not express much enthusiasm with 5G and autonomous vehicles as evidenced by their lack of plans for “vehicle autonomy on the availability of 5G coverage.” 5G is touted as “the most significant data network advancement to date.” Aside from transportation, other use cases include connected devices or the Internet of Things, healthcare, and smart cities. Even if 5G has not gone mainstream yet (Ericsson has deployed the technology is some countries), people have put so much faith in it that somehow the expectations are almost unimaginable.

Autonomous cars ‘ are hackable

Creating layers of security to make self-driving cars safe Words by Marlet D. Salazar Artwork by Zeil Romero and Simon Engracial

People are all going crazy about all the possibilities behind autonomous or self-driving cars. Engineers have been coming up with technologies that could make this once-futuristic scenario possible. However, everything that is good also comes with bad. Autonomous cars are hackable for the simple reason that it operates through a network.

In an article written by Preston Gralla, technical writer at cybersecurity company Symantec, he quoted Brian Witten, head of Advanced Technologies, Office of the CTO at Symantec, as saying that various forms of connectivity, network or wireless, are potential attack vectors for self-driving cars. Bluetooth, while a very useful wireless tool, poses a lot of potential risks to autonomous cars. Cars use Bluetooth to stream music or other

48

july 2019

entertainment systems. Smartphones also use this wireless connection for navigation. According to KPMG’s “Protecting the Fleet and the Car Business,” an average car contains 150 million lines of code and a vast number of wireless connections for internal and external connections. These lines of communication are sent over the cloud, technology’s Achilles heel.

KPMG said in its report that conversations have been mostly around hacking while cars, manufacturers should also look into fleet hacking which will bring considerable danger in the event of a cyber attack. One suite of autonomous fleets shares the same software, network, and connectivity. The damage is not only about stolen data but hackers can remotely manipulate autonomous fleet when they gain access to networks.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Hacking cars In a news report by Motherboard, a tech news site under Vice media, a hacker was able to monitor the location of thousands of vehicles by breaking into their GPS tracker apps. At one point, the hacker also turned off the engines of tens of thousands while they were still in motion.

Motherboard said the hacker, who goes by the name L&M, claimed into hacking more than 7,000 iTrack accounts and more than 20,000 ProTrack accounts. These are monitoring apps companies use to monitor fleets through GPS tracking devices in India, Morocco, the Philippines, and South Africa. The Washington Post reported that what worries manufacturers and cybersecurity experts are the keyless locking and ignition systems. Using the “relay hack” method, hackers trick the cars into recognizing that the owner is just nearby and remotely opens the car.

Security by Design While hacking is an inevitable fact of digital and cloud-based life, cybersecurity firms are working hand in hand with automakers to add layers and layers of protection to keep autonomous vehicles safe.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Symantec’s “Building Comprehensive Security in Cars” white paper, said that methods such as digital capture of location, signing data on capture, and using secure boot and code signing to ensure that firmware is not tampered may effectively elude hackers. The company also suggests in the white paper that over-the-air (OTA) update could be just one of the many ways automakers can remotely resolve an issue should a hacker get into networks and cause damage to cars and endanger the lives of passengers.

Security companies are working to minimize the attack surface. One such effort is the “Security by Design” philosophy wherein software engineers have integrated security from the conceptualization up to the execution, which makes the foundation secure. Automakers are also advised to choose its supply chain meticulously because third-party risks are inevitable. Emerging technologies are not without risks even if they do not involve autonomous cars. However, automakers and security firms have banded together to come up with solutions to prevent the hacking of cars. The danger will always be there but mitigating it has become a priority for many companies.

CHALLENGES We are a new player in the market having more than five years of presence here. It’s been a while since VW was in the Philippines—almost an entire generation, maybe even two, and it’s our parents who were the last mainstream consumers of a different set of VW products back then. Since then VW—globally as a brand and as a product—has evolved, and the products that we’re experiencing now are already the result of that evolution. So, we need to reintroduce the brand to Filipinos, and I think the challenge would be to let people learn about VW cars and what VW has to offer.

THE VW PRODUCT PORTFOLIO We’ve had a few transitions in terms of the products that have been available onshore. Our existing product portfolio is relatively new—just over a year old, but we’d like to bring in other products to address other segments of the market. Our plan is to bring in more products at the right price point. Before, our products were at the higher end of the pricing range, and that created an impression that our products were more premium and perhaps suited only to a limited segment. We’ve since recalibrated that and brought in more products that are more aligned with the broader market of automotive buyers. We hope that people will discover that there’s a VW car that’s affordable, good value, and that they can consider purchasing. Beyond that, we’d also like to be able to offer the types of cars that consumers are looking for, beyond the ones we now have.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

THE VW NETWORK

THE VW COMMUNITY

Aside from products, there’s also presence. We’d like to expand our dealership network so we are more accessible to people—where they live, where they work. We have great partner-dealers in Bacolod, Pampanga, Iloilo, and Santa Rosa, plus we also recently signed to open a dealership in Cagayan de Oro. Reflecting the Philippine economy where there’s a lot of growth in the provinces, we think the demand for cars will naturally follow.

One of the things working to our advantage, and I’m very pleasantly surprised about, is the strong affinity to the VW brand. The younger generation do recognize the VW emblem, and I think we can capitalize on that. We need to find a way to translate that awareness into action—at the very least to get people to come and take a look at the cars, do a test drive, see what it’s like and then, hopefully, convert into sales.

PH AUTO INDUSTRY I think the industry will continue to be strong, and the economy looks like it will continue to be stable and growing. I think demand will recover from the last couple of years and the industry would continue to follow the trajectory of reasonable growth that we’ve seen over the longer term. Barring any other fundamental changes in the industry, we think It will follow the normalized growth trend at the very least. We continue to be positive. For this year, I think the industry is looking at flat to modest growth, and we’re also allowing for the possibility of a slight decline. If you look at the range of possible outcomes, volatility is quite narrow. As a general conclusion, in 2019 the industry should be okay, and by 2020 we should see the normalized growth returning.

THE VW TEAM The thing that I’m very happy about and I can really feel as a new member of the team is the passion and the commitment of the team, and it may sound corny, but you can see the love for the brand. We talk to our sales consultants, for example, and you can really see that the affinity and the bond to the brand is strong, so we’ll continue to build on that and leverage off of that. As our brand ambassadors, they’re the ones who represent us in front of everyone they meet.

SPECIAL MESSAGE To our fans and users and customers, thank you for your loyal patronage to the brand. Thank you for the continued support to VW. Please tell your friends your positive experiences. For our employees and partners, thank you for everything you do. Thank you for your commitment and dedication. Let’s all continue to work together because the future is exciting, and the possibilities are also exciting.

Yamaha PH riders remain undaunted in ARRC Leg 2 The UMA Racing Yamaha Philippines team had an incredible start to the first leg of the Asian Road Racing Championship (ARRC) held in Thailand. Representing the Philippines were Kyle Paz and Masato Fernando. Fernando, who is a veteran racer, started and ended the race at the 20th spot. Meanwhile, Paz started behind an all-Malaysian troop but eventually led the race from his rivals which secured him the sixth spot. Due to the crash that resulted in a red flag on the second round, Fernando and Paz were able to catch up. Reaching the front on the last two laps of the race, the Filipino racers were able to steal the spot from foreign competitors. Championship leader Kyle Paz led the way with Masato Fernando closing in on the rest of the leaders. During the final lap, however, Masato got involved in a multi-rider crash that took away his chance to secure a spot at the podium. It was a tough round for them but both have vowed to claim the victory when they return in the final round which will be held in Japan. Paz continues to defend his championship spot and Fernando seeks to improve his standings from fifth place. The Han dynasty of ancient China lasted for over 400 years and is considered the golden age of Chinese history. During the Han dynasty, there were great advances in metallurgy, as well as science and technology in general. Steel and wrought iron were considered two of the greatest advancements during the Han dynasty period. This meant that the Chinese were well ahead of their Western counterparts in war, and many strategy games such as Civilization and Age of Empires showcase the Chinese as a playable race. This is explored further in Total War: Three Kingdoms, where players can micromanage the affairs of late-second century China.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is a turn-based strategy real-time tactics game similar to Civilization. Players are transported back to 190 AD, around the time of the collapse of the Han dynasty. Warlords practically control China during this period, and players have to control one of the game’s 12 factions, unite China, and become the ultimate ruler of China. Like most turn-based strategy games, one must be patient and carefully calculate their next move. Therefore, to be successful in this game, you might spend hours and hours playing, as the other faction leaders are rather dynamic and can quickly respond to any of your moves. You can play “Romance” mode where the generals have superhuman strength, or “Records” mode which provides a more historically authentic experience. Characters in the game now have different backgrounds and traits; there are no longer dedicated generals, spies, and diplomats, allowing the player to move from one role to the next. Fans of previous Total War games may have to do a lot (think Football Manager-level) of number crunching as there are nearly 100 traits in the game that can buff or nerf your character. These affect five different attributes: authority, expertise, cunning, resolve, and instinct. These five attributes give you specific strengths in battle and in maintaining your army.

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

The guanxi (friendship and loyalty) system is used, which is an actual Chinese concept that focuses on dynamic inter-relationships. Characters are very realistic, each with their unique personality, motivations, and likes/dislikes. You can additionally equip ancillaries to boost your own character’s attributes. Diplomacy has been greatly revamped from the previous Total War titles. Your deal-making skills will have to be unmatched, as your ability to interact with other factions can affect state relationships and attitudes. You can even form coalitions with other states and guarantee the autonomy of any vassals you bring under your control. You can even create your own war stories as certain events and initial dilemmas will come up as you meet certain objectives. You can even look at what happened during history and what the outcomes will be. You can also reject the historical option and instead form your own alternative history in the game. The court system allows you to install family members in certain areas of your administration. You can generate missions for the player to improve national industry, military, and commerce. You should ensure that their guanxi is positive as well as their satisfaction, as they

can leave the court for other factions; they can even bring retinues and territories they have captured with them. The tech tree, or reforms, has also been redesigned in the game. The undercover network allows you to secretly undermine your enemies (or allies). For example, paranoid players can place family members in spy positions to ensure loyalty. Not using the undercover network forces the player to resort to diplomacy or war, which severely limits the player’s options. During battle, you can have units of 240 infantry or 60 horses. You can even utilize heroes on the battlefield with their own armor, weapons, and equipment. They can be used to buff your heroes or even hunt down enemy heroes on the battlefield. For the bold, you can even choose to duel in front of their army. If you win, you can boost the morale of your units and turn the tide of battle. Total War: Three Kingdoms is a great look into Chinese history and I would recommend it to any history buff or strategy game fan. There is a lot to do and a very high replay value with this game as you can create numerous scenarios that may result in your faction ruling all of China through strength.

Auto Chess and the rise of the Autobattler genre Developer: Valve, Dragonest Publisher: Drodo Studio Platforms: Android, iOS, PC Words by Gabriel Pe

When Valve announced its own digital trading card game based on the MOBA DOTA 2, “Artifact,” back at the International 2017, most of DOTA 2 fans, yes even I, were afraid that the game would turn out bad. When the game was released last year, yes it was fun, but it was not the game DOTA fans would pour themselves over. The game also has a hurdle preventing players from playing. Unlike the older brother DOTA 2, Artifact was not free-to-play. Players needed to shell out PHP 1,100 to download the game and hundreds of pesos more just to buy cards needed to build a decent deck. Fast forward to a few months after the release of Artifact, a new game called DOTA Auto Chess shows up on my DOTA 2 main menu. Like any other DOTA 2 arcade game I ignored it, knowing that custom games do not offer the same satisfaction as playing the main game. As Auto-chess popularity grew, so did my curiosity. After eventually trying it out, I can say that, it was definitely one of the most addicting games I have ever played. And best of all it’s free to play.

“Auto Chess” was created by Chinese game developer Drodo Studio as a custom game mode for DOTA 2. The game was uploaded to the DOTA 2 client back in January and was almost an instant hit for both DOTA 2 fans and casual gamers looking for a game that could stimulate the brain. Auto Chess is a strategy game that combines aspects of tower defense and the mind games of chess. The complexity of the game has brought upon a new sub-genre of games dubbed as the Autobattler. The game features eight players and is played on an 8x8 chess board where players could play a piece/character. At the start of a round, each pieces, would battle opposing pieces. At the start, players could only play a single piece. Clearing a wave or round gives you gold and experience. Gold is used to buy new pieces while experience is used to level up. Leveling up means adding more pieces to your board, your level determines how many pieces you could play.

Gold and experience are just the beginning. Each piece is then divided into different races and class. Owning a number of pieces with the same race or class gives the player a boost to his pieces. Playing three exact pieces on the board would upgrade that exact piece giving the player a bigger boost and a higher damaging piece. Each piece have their own special attacks that either heal friendly characters or provide an area of effect damage to the enemy. Aside from the boosts, enemy pieces also have a chance to drop an item. Each item also have their own use and value. An item sends your units to the back of your enemy for maximum damage, adds armor so you could be beefier and handle more damage or have a chance to use your special attack. Each piece has a maximum of six item slots. Some items could be combined to make a new item that also has different

effects. Players have a chance for an item drop in the first three rounds and every fifth round thereafter. So how do you win in Autochess? Unlike regular chess where you play one-on-one, Autochess lets you face seven other players in a game. You start each game with a hundred health points (HP). You lose HP when you fail to eliminate all the opposing pieces for the round. How many HP you lose also depends on how many opposing pieces are left on the board. The best way to avoid losing HP is to strategize which pieces you would play and where you would place them on the board. Different players have different strategies on where to place their pieces. It’s up to you to figure the best strategy to overcome each type of playout. If you want to try out the game but hesitant

because it’s a DOTA2 mod you don’t need to worry, Drodo Studio has already released its own stand-alone game after failing to find an agreement to work with Valve. As of this writing, the game is only available on Android and IOS but they have also announced a PC version coming soon. Valve, on the other hand, has also released its own version called DOTA Underlords and is now available via open beta for all DOTA 2 battle pass holders, it will be available for free on the Steam store, Google Play and Appstore soon. Lastly, League of Legends (LoL) fans could also play their own version soon on their LoL client. LoL developer Riot revealed that an Autobattler game called Teamfight Tactics is already on their beta servers and would soon come to the main client as a limited time game mode.

AMD E3 LAUNCH Words by Ren Alcantara

At the start of last month, just before the main E3 event, AMD took members of the global press to LA to learn more about the latest that the company had to offer. It was an event that was as deep as it was broad, offering tech journalists from all over the world a chance to see what they had in store for the consumers, and just how they managed to achieve its position in the computing world today. Before all of the technical details, AMD CEO Lisa Su took to the stage to explain that the path that AMD is on today was the result of a calculated gamble. Decisions on designing the architecture for the future of processors happens five years in advance, and everyone in AMD is very proud that they went with 7nm. That gambit allowed them to realize the gains that we see today, and has opened the door for AMD to take the lead in all the segments they are in. The future of AMD no longer just lies in PC. Apple has announced that the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II GPU will be powering the all-new Mac Pro.

Both Sony and Microsoft have chosen AMD to provide the muscle for their next-gen consoles. Cloud gaming, particularly Google’s Stadia, will be running an AMD GPU, and even in mobile, AMD is set to make huge changes. Decades of experience in design, manufacture, and research have put AMD in a solid position to be the future, and they aren’t shy about it. The E3 launch solidified this idea. The AMD livestream event, Next Horizon Gaming, was the company flexing their muscles, and showing consumers that their time has come.

Class-leading Graphics Performance AMD’s Radeon 5700XT and RX 5700 GPUs built on their new RDNA gaming architecture for unbelievable performance in its class for rendering AAA titles at 1440p, and blistering frame rates for current eSprorts titles. “Seventy percent of PC gamers today are using three-year-old or older graphics hardware1 that lacks the necessary horsepower and capabilities to deliver fully immersive, high-fidelity and high-performance gaming experiences,” said Scott Herkelman, corporate vice president and general manager, Radeon Technologies Group at AMD. “Our new Radeon graphics cards with RDNA redefine what’s possible in 1440p gameplay, delivering stunning visuals, amazing performance and industry-leading features to take gaming experiences to the next level.” Through a lot of clever engineering, and building upon the technologies that they chose to wager on five years back, AMD’s RDNA gaming architecture redefines what it means to game in 2019. Built from the ground-up for peerless performance at astoundingly low wattages, they attacked the requirements of current-gen gaming from scratch. The secret of the RDNA architecture is a little complex, but at the heart of it, it’s a multi-

level cache hierarchy that offers reduced higherbandwith, for better latency better performance at lower power consumption. It’s an extremely elegant solution that engineers worked hard to actualize, and is a great source of pride for everyone in the company. The results are clear: 1.25x higher performance per clock, over the previous architecture. The consumer gets more horsepower, for better graphics, physics, and a more immersive gaming experience, while maintaining the high framerates to keep games smooth. This also translates into responsiveness, and a real, competitive edge for Radeon users over the competition, and for those who want to stream, better encoding for the popular compression standards. Also announced were a few additional features that are rolling out for better gaming. Radeon Image Sharpening stood out as one of our

favorites. By restoring visual clarity lost to softening by post-processing effects, it makes games appear noticeably sharper, at virtually no hit to performance. This should prove valuable to players who upscale video and end up losing some detail in the process. The fact it’s enabled with a single switch, and that there’s hardly any noticeable performance penalty is just the cherry on top. Radeon’s Anti-Lag is AMD’s gift to eSports gamers. Switching the feature on decreases the time between a command input from the mouse or keyboard, and the command appearing on-screen. In competitive games where every frame counts, this could spell the difference between a kill, and feeding kills to the opposing team.

The event wouldn’t be complete without unveiling the latest Ryzen Processors. The entire 3rd generation desktop processor family was on show, from the Ryzen 5 3600x, all the way up to the world’s first 16-core Gaming CPU, the Ryzen 9 3950X that runs a solid 3.5GHz, with a 4.7GHz boost, at 105W TDP. Let that last one sink in for a moment.

into the equation. Feeding a Twitch stream with the Ryzen 9 3900X delivers a smooth 59 FPS for a game like The Division 2, while on the competition, it’s a slideshow at 1.6 FPS. There’s just no comparison. Even at the lower end of the Ryzen family, the 3600X offers great performance per dollar, particularly against other brands at eSports titles, the realm in which it is mainly expected to perform.

The 3rd Gen Ryzen 9 3900x processor in particular delivers 14 percent better single-threaded performance, and 6 percent better multi-threaded performance, at lower power than similarly-prices competition. This translates in generally better gaming performance across mainstream gaming titles at 1080p. The edge is even more apparent when streaming is thrown

Creators also get a boost with the new family of CPUs. With up to 47 percent better performance for content creation for the Ryzen 9, and a wide selection of motherboards to fit particular needs, it’s the clear choice for anyone looking to do gaming, content creation, and general computing.

Unparalleled CPU Performance

It also offers true PCIe 4.0 support for the next generation of computing. The gains don’t end there. With massive potential for BIOS and Windows overclocking, this is a great option for enthusiasts who want to push the limits of what their hardware can achieve. At the event, the Ryzen Overclocking Team managed to push the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950x to a monster 5.375 GHz, for a new record for a 16-core processor, and a new record for a mainstream-socket CPU. AMD has made waves with their latest Radeon and Ryzen products. They’re putting themselves on top with solid performance, great prices, and cutting-edge architecture. We can’t wait to see where the company will next take computing, but we definitely want to find out.

Lenovo talks digital transformation success for public, private orgs

Michael Ngan (rightmost), country general manager, Lenovo Philippines, with 2019 OpenGov Asia Forum delegates.

With digital transformation a priority for both public and private organizations to improve operations, leading technology company Lenovo is urging leaders to focus on the three core aspects of workspace, work culture, and workforce for a smooth and hassle-free transition. According to an IDC study commissioned by Lenovo, despite the increasing rate of digital transformation, 60% of organizations in the AsiaPacific are still struggling to achieve enterprisewide transformation because of multi-faceted challenges such as data security, privacy, and identity. Lenovo is a leading tech provider in the consumer, commercial, and enterprise markets. On the local level, these issues came into light once again at the recent 2019 OpenGov Asia Forum where Michael Ngan, country general manager, Lenovo Philippines, was tapped as a roundtable moderator. During the discussion, representatives of various government agencies shared that their current problems with digital transformation come from the lack of key resources such as skilled workers and infrastructure. Moreover, they also cited having no clear goals and a culture not open to innovation as other main hurdles.

the agencies to take a holistic approach to digital transformation. “In order to fully reap the benefits of digital transformation, organizations should put efforts on turning workplaces into collaborative, rather than task-based, work environments,” Ngan said. “This enables easy adaptation of future operating models, as well as improves productivity and employee experience.” One recommendation that Ngan shared to bolster the workforce is to set up co-working spaces, a fast-growing trend driven by competitive pressures to innovate and attract and retain the top talent, which is comprised of millennials and digital natives. IDC also predicted that by 2024, 50 percent of repeatable tasks will be automated while 20 percent of workers doing highly brainpowered tasks will have AI-infused software or other related connected technology as a “coworker.” Lenovo thus advises organizations to start laying the groundwork for developing a cohesive existence of their human employees and digital workers, i.e., Artificial Intelligence.

organization, Lenovo suggests that agencies turn it around by empowering employees with the right skills and technologies that facilitate collaboration and supports an innovation culture, not just internally but also with others by considering the broader ecosystem and potential partners. “It is critical now to empower employees, especially in the public sector, with the right set of agile tools, technologies, and an enabling environment that fosters a digitalfirst approach. This further bolsters both productivity and engagement levels for better outcomes,” explained Ngan. An example of agile technology that Lenovo recommends is personalized computing, a setup that simplifies the financing, deployment, management, and disposal process of computing assets by grouping them into a single, configurable solution. This means that organizations can select the appropriate hardware and software, giving the workforce greater device choice and removing compatibility issues. Used effectively, an enhanced digital workspace, workculture, and workforce can help public bodies become intelligent enterprises that can automate processes and even anticipate the needs of the public.

AC Health invests in predictive healthcare technology company, Fibronostics

From left to right: Christian Besler, AC Health Chief Digital Officer; Josette Abarca, AC Health Chief Finance Officer; Paolo Borromeo, AC Health CEO and President; Michael Shleifer, SPRIM Ventures Managing Partner; Bruno de Pampelonne, Tikehau IM CEO; Dr. Ronald Quiambao, SPRIM Philippines Regional Medical Director; and Lorra Dela Paz, AC Health Strategy and Business Development.

Ayala Healthcare Holdings Inc. (AC Health), through its technology arm, Vigos, expanded its digital portfolio with a recent investment in Fibronostics, a global US-based healthcare technology company focusing on non-invasive algorithm-based solutions for diagnostic testing. The agreement was signed by Paolo Borromeo, president and CEO, AC Health; Christian Besler, chief digital officer, AC Health , and Dr. Michael Shleifer, managing partner, SPRIM Ventures, recently. SPRIM is the bioscience R&D firm from which Fibronostics was spun off. Founded in 2015, Fibronostics aims to improve screening, follow-up, and diagnosis through non-invasive products. Key focus areas include prevalent chronic conditions such as liver disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. “This investment fits well into our Vigos health technology portfolio, which we are proud to say is the first digital health portfolio in the Philippines. We are always on the lookout for technology

solutions that empower our doctors and improve quality for our patients,” said Borromeo.

Meanwhile, Dr. Shleifer believes that the partnership would encourage more patients to appreciate the value of screening and preventive health.

Algorithms As part of the partnership, AC Health will launch two Fibronostics products, LiverFAST and HealthFACTR, in its FamilyDOC clinics. LiverFAST is a proprietary algorithm that analyzes 10 biomarkers from a blood sample to help screen and monitor common liver diseases. The test is intended to be a simple and less expensive option to other diagnostics, such as liver biopsy or liver imaging. HealthFACTR, on the other hand, is as a 10-minute metabolic health check-up solution that provides immediate risk assessment and personalized recommendations, based on the latest medical guidelines. “We believe LiverFAST and HealthFACTR can help make diagnostic tests more meaningful for patients and doctors. These algorithms are excellent examples of how we can harness healthcare data and analytics to improve clinical decision-making,” Besler said.

“We are very excited to collaborate with AC Health,” said Dr. Shleifer. “Through their network of FamilyDOC clinics, we hope to reach many more patients in the Philippines, where the burden of chronic diseases has been growing. Ultimately, our goal is to screen patients early so that they can work in partnership with their doctors to maintain good health and prevent complications.” Vigos also has investments in MedGrocer (a technology-enabled medicine-as-a-service for companies and drug manufacturers), AIDE (a home healthcare mobile platform), and Tikehau-SPRIM (a Singapore-based health fund). It has also built its own suite of health technology products including VigosEMR, an Electronic Medical Records and Clinic Information System, which is being used across all FamilyDOC clinics, and Vigos CARE, an integrated corporate health solutions platform allowing companies and employees to maximize their health benefits.

CYBER SECURITY

Cybersecurity firm launches Safe Kids feature to protect kids online TIPS FROM EXPERTS AT KASPERSKY TO PROTECT CHILDREN ONLINE: 1. Talk regularly. Be involved in children’s online activities from an early age so this is the established norm. Encourage communication so you can both learn from each other and to help build mutual trust. 2. Set boundaries. Ensure that children know what is acceptable and what is not. Also, make them aware of the consequences of going somewhere that they shouldn’t or using tech when they shouldn’t be. This should be reviewed as a child gets older. 3. Use available resources. Understand that there’s a lot of help as you raise digital children. Use the resources provided by some companies or organizations such as parental control software as well as tips and techniques to better manage kids who use digital devices

A few years ago, tech giant Google predicted that the world will be mobile first, meaning the young generation would have their first digital exposure on mobile devices instead of computers. A report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky gathered from May 2018 to May 2019 states that “kids are now fast moving toward the use of mobile devices for their online activities instead of using computers.” While some parents and guardians have been working hard to limit their children’s screen time, it cannot be helped that some of them have grown attached to their devices. They are digital natives, after all, who have no idea what a world is like without the internet. Constant exposure to the internet without adult supervision can expose them to various types of threats like cyberbullying or even sexual harassment. Kaspersky provided data from IndexMundi that says about 33.39% of the country’s population currently make up the 0-14 age group while 19.16% comprise the 15-25 age bracket. Aside from limiting screen time, parents can also install safety apps such as the Kaspersky Safe Kids, a feature in Kaspersky Total Security (KTS).

With this module, parents can now manage the child’s screen time, view the child’s location using a GPS tracker with a real-time online map, know the child’s device battery level so they can be warned to recharge the device, monitor their public and Facebook activity, and block access to adult websites and content for most platforms. Kaspersky is making this feature easily accessible to parents with the pricing of PHP 2,764 (one device for one year), PHP 3,801 (one device for two years) and PHP 3,455 (three devices for one year). Parents can also purchase the KTS from the on-demand subscription service through telco company Smart where a single license costs PHP 30 for seven days (Text KTS30 to 8933) and PHP 120 for 30 days (Text KTS120 to 8933).

Sophos acquires Rook Security to provide managed detection and response Sophos, a network and endpoint security firm, announces that it has acquired Rook Security, a company that offers managed detection and response (MDR) services. Rook Security provides a 24/7 team of cyberthreat hunters and incident response experts who monitor, hunt for, analyze and respond to security incidents for businesses of all sizes. The privatelyowned company was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Indianapolis, USA. Sophos is creating re-sellable MDR services by combining Rook Security’s threat detection, investigation and response capabilities with its recently acquired DarkBytes technology platform. As a channel-first, channel-best security provider, Sophos will deliver the new MDR services through its network of approximately 47,000 channel partners worldwide. “Cybercriminals are relentlessly trying to exploit organizations with techniques ranging from tried-and-true phishing emails to the more recent trend of ‘hacker pen-testing’ to find weaknesses in their surface area. As a result, businesses need 24/7 monitoring and management of what is

www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

happening on their network, yet many of them do not have the expertise, can’t keep up or don’t have the security teams in-house to optimally configure and manage security around-the-clock,” said Joe Levy, chief technology officer at Sophos. “With MDR, Sophos’ channel partners will be able to provide businesses of all sizes with expert services that continuously detect, hunt for and respond to security incidents.” In addition, Sophos plans to align its synchronized security technology and product portfolio with Rook Security’s 24/7 services for MDR customers. Rook Security experts will also be able to review these customer security postures to ensure

optimal policy configurations for Sophos products across estates. “Rook Security provides managed detection and response services to detect and eliminate cyber threats. Through threat hunting and data analytics, Rook Security’s experts rapidly detect and mitigate active attacks,” said J.J. Thompson, founder and CEO, Rook Security. “We are excited to bring our experts and service delivery innovation to Sophos, a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity. Together, we can implement faster, more effective threat detection and response capabilities to better protect businesses.”

DICT throws support to growing esports scene, calls for responsible gaming

DICT conducted the tournament as a launching pad for its review of support would further legitimize esports in the country

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) showed its support to the Philippine esports scene through its hosting of the first-ever Kalasag Esports Tournament that coincided with the National ICT Month 2019 kickoff celebration. Aligned to this year’s National ICT month theme, See ICT Differently, the DICT conducted the tournament as a launching pad for its review of support and possible policymaking avenues that would further legitimize esports in the country and ensure that the Philippines could take full advantage of the growing industry. In 2018, the esports industry is projected to generate $905 million in revenue, reaching over $1 billion over the next two years. At the end of the three-day competition featuring Mobile Legends, JOYparasaBayan, a team composed of Quezon City Government employees, ruled the 31-team field from different national government agencies (NGAs) and local government units (LGUs) as they emerged as Kalasag first-ever champions.

70

JULY 2019

Matatag QC, another QC Hall squad, came in second while DICT’s Konektado Gaming – KTG and Department of Agriculture’s GG Gaming copped the semifinalist spots. “We designed this to engage people in discussions on responsible gaming, and gather insights on policy considerations in the sector,” said Eliseo Rio Jr., acting secretary, DICT. “It is our proactive stance in supporting the industry and promoting a better culture of gaming in the country.” Additionally, Rio said the three-year-old department worked together with various esports organizations, including those involved in organizing the esports competition in the upcoming South East Asian Games to be held in the country. Commissioner Darren Vitug of The Nationals, the country’s franchise-based esports league, said the conduct of tournaments is one way of professionalizing esports in the Philippines. “The advent of professional esports teams, the rising market demand, and the potential of

Filipinos in excelling in online and video games are some of the reasons why the time is ripe for esports to be classified as a professional game in the country,” Vitug said in his presentation on the lecture portion of the event. Jules “Lex” Marcelo, a professional esports athlete, added that legitimizing esports should start with the gamer themselves. He advised players to maintain a healthy balance of work productivity and online gaming. In closing, Assistant Secretary for Infostructure Management and Special Concerns Alan A. Silor acknowledged the Kalasag players: “We thank and give recognition to the support from the Kalasag players for the advancement of esports through their competitive spirit. It’s not all about the esports, it is more of game development and ICT infostructure support to the gaming industry,” he said. The Kalasag Esports Tournament was in partnership with Smart and PLDT Enterprise and supported by Mobile Legends Esports for Everyone project.

Secret Messages: The benefits of encrypted conversations

Use apps’ secret messaging features.

News of data breaches has become commonplace. The only thing that makes it a bigger news story is the extent of damage done to victims and the amount it will cost companies.

However, people must remember that scandals— sexual, political, or simply personal—arise because sensitive information falls into the wrong hands. So, how do you safeguard yourself from possible breaches and avoid being the next data breach victim? Here are what you need to keep in mind:

Anyone who is on the internet and using any cloud-based service is susceptible to hacking or cyberthreat. In the Philippines, there are 119 million mobile subscribers to which 47% of users are either browsing Facebook or chatting using its free messaging app. Last year, the National Privacy Commission requested the social media company to submit a Data Breach Notification Report to identify the 755,973 affected Philippine-based users in compliance with NPC Circular No. 16-03. The social media company revealed a vulnerability attributed to an exploit of Facebook’s “View As” feature, through which hackers managed to generate access tokens which allowed intruders to log on to affected FB profiles using a “key” to one’s accounts without having to type in a password. This incident generated instant reactions from its users that started numerous conversations about data privacy. In Republic Act 10173 otherwise known as Data Privacy Act of 2012, people whose personal information is collected, stored, and processed are called data subjects. Organizations who deal with your personal details, whereabouts, and preferences are duty-bound to observe and respect data subjects’ data privacy rights.

Viber’s Hidden Chats function needs a PIN.

1. Think twice before backing up your messages. There are many benefits of encrypted messaging. One of these is that communications are coded in order to make information unavailable to third parties. When two or more devices communicate via an app, the information will be transmitted using a secret code rather than a plain text. But here’s one good point to remember, often, your scrambled messages are unscrambled when they are backed up to the cloud. Which means, the government can demand your cloud provider— Apple or Google—to retrieve and turn over your messages from its servers. 2. Make sure your app uses encrypted messaging. When you say end-to-end encrypted messaging, it means all messages that are sent from your device to the person you’re communicating with are in the form of a code that only the recipient’s device can translate to plain text. Which

makes it impossible for anyone—even the app maker—to see what’s being said. 3. Consider deleting messages you never meant to send. Viber, for one, offers a Delete Message option that will allow you to delete any message from both the sender and recipient’s device. It will totally remove the message even if it has already been seen. Once deleted, the content can never be viewed again. 4. Use secret or hidden chats when possible. If you want extra privacy when you send messages, use your chat app’s secret chat features, if it’s available. Viber has a Secret Chats option that allows you to set a self-destruct time for every message you send in the chat. If you’re an Android user, the recipient can’t take a screenshot of the chat while for iPhone user, the recipient will receive a notification that a screenshot has been taken. But if you want a conversation to not appear in the chat list, then use Viber’s Hidden Chats function. These are normal chats, but they are kept in a secret section of the app that only the sender can access with a PIN. 5. Keep your apps updated. One of the best ways to make sure that you stay secure is to keep your mobile and desktop software up-to-date. Oftentimes software updates are done when app developers find a security bug or when enterprising hackers have become familiar with the code and have already created hacks to break them. So, update your chat apps when a new version becomes available. With all the prying eyes everywhere on the Internet, it boils down to the need to be vigilant when people talk about privacy and security. People need to remember to always be careful in choosing the app that people use in all aspects of their lives.

App aims to make roads safe for pedestrians and motorists Words by Marlet D. Salazar

According to the World Health Organization’s “Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013,” over a third of road traffic deaths in low- and middle-income countries are among pedestrians and cyclists. Road crashes in the Philippines claim 10,000 lives annually from the data provided by road safety advocates (Dahan Dahan sa Daan) in November 2018. Lowering, if not eradicating, the statistics is what the founders Djanco Information Technology Solutions want to achieve when they developed Croxtec, a road safety app that will give warnings to all registered users of imminent danger. Debbie Anne Macariola-St.John, founder of Djanco, helped develop the app Croxtec (pronounced cross-tek) and brought the idea to the Philippines. She

caused by car accidents. Unsuspecting pedestrian following road safety rules by crossing at the pedestrian can die from an speeding vehicle lanes. The app, according to St. John, is designed to help pedestrians and motorists be more mindful of their own safety on the streets. Registered Croxtec users, pedestrians and motorists, will recieve an alert or warning on their smartphones when the app is switched on using their data plans. The app has the ability to locate road users if there is an oncoming danger. Motorists who might be driving on high speed will also recieve a warning that a pedestrian is nearby or crossing the street. Croxtec developed Zones to easily distinguish the “danger.” For pedestrians, the zones include the Safe Zone which indicates the user is within a radius of 25 meters and more; Caution Zone is when the user is within a radius of 16 meters to

The Croxtec Zones for motorists include the Safe Zone which indicates that the user is within a radius of more than 75 meters; the Caution Zone is when the user is within a radius of 31-75 meters; and the Unsafe Zone says when the user is less than 31 meters. The app gives three options of alert types: vibrate, tone, and voice. Like most apps, Croxtec will only work if the mobile phone data is enabled. However, its developers assured users that it can still work without interfering with other apps running in the background. The group was formed when American musician and producer Diplo was asked to write a song with British singer and producer Labrinth and Australian singer Sia. The trio creates great sound mixing R&B grime, acid jazz, trap, and EDM. Having already released an EP and this, their debut studio album, the strength of each artist is featured prominently throughout their songs, making for a fun new addition to anyone’s party mix. Perfect for getting yourself up on the way to work, or to prep

for pre-game on a pre-weekend night out! Also good for Mondays. Admit it, there’s not a lot that helps us march off to work. Recommended Track/s: Genius – The group’s first single, Genius, will keep everyone on their toes with a love song. With Sia and Labrinth belting their vocal work, and you would know Diplo is flexing his creative muscles mixing all of the artists’ styles. Taking cues from the name, both the track (and all the others) and their music videos will make you feel like you are under the influence.

Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes & Dirty Ice Cream (15th Anniversary Edition) [2018] Artist: Orange and Lemons Ah, Orange and Lemons. That band who made THAT dance possible. You know the one. Once in our lives, we did it or saw people who did. They may have started off as a Beatles tribute band, but Orange and Lemons gave life to the folk-pop genre in the OPM industry. Love songs one would think of as coming from their parents’ era that also work well with the language of millennials? Yes, please. With tunes that make you bust out the old air guitar and mellow vocal work so inviting you’d want to sing along, Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes & Dirty Ice Cream reminds us how they got in the business in the first place. Suited for a

retro-filled FM station Sunday, cruising down the freeway or out of town! Recommended Track/s: Hey, Please – This suspiciously Beatles-sounding song, tells of a really insistent suitor chasing the focus of his emotions. This is really the band at their Orange and Lemons-est. Now do yourself a favor and listen to the rest of their albums.

Nobody Else EP [2017] Artist: Idealism

well with a stressful drive home after a hard day of work.

Of course, we have something for the lo-fi listeners out here. One of the underground genres picking up popularity among millennials, lo-fi features distorted sounds, low tempo, and really mostly feature words instead of the classical sense of lyrics. Idealism shows up with an EP made of his usual style of uncomplicated piano melodies, steady, softened beats, and elements from the environment that puts here in the atmosphere. In case you have not tried lo-fi music, it goes really

Cold Door Handles – Yes, lo-fi song titles don’t make much sense and no, this is not a soundtrack for when you close or open doors. This track is recommended because what was said about the artist rings true. The beats will make you bob your head, while the piano will keep you calm as the world will still turn even if you miss that deadline your boss just told you about.

just want a good emotional release. or maybe just a couple of sad songs to sing to.

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi comes with his debut album after a successful EP last year. Capaldi, known for his self-deprecating humor is also known for his videos and social media presence, even getting promoted on 9GAG. Armed with a powerful voice that hints at Chris Martin and Ed Sheeran among others, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent brings listeners to an emotional rollercoaster perfect for when you

Recommended Track/s: One – Speaking of good things, this particular track talks about how one’s loss is another’s gain. Thankful to fate for bringing a person to whom they really belong. Fate is a tricky, fickle thing. Maybe Lewis Capaldi got it right and just be thankful, yeah?

Translating cultures and visions Photographs have become windows to a country’s soul. Words by Jewel Sta. Ana Photos by Drey Go

These days, we first discover a country’s culture through photographs taken by people who dared to get out of their comfort zones and see the world. The lens is a silent witness that allows us to see the once untold stories. This is what travel photography exactly does. It gives us a sense of belonging as citizens of the world. And with Drey Go, these kinds of stories must be immortalized.

Christian Dree Masangcay, or Drey Go to his friends and colleagues, is a visionary. During his early years at UE Caloocan, he decided to start his own production group with his close friends which made a number of short films and covered big events in the university. Black Cookies Productions grew into a small company which has been providing documentation services for weddings, debuts, and birthdays. Initially, the AB Communication Arts graduate is looking at becoming a filmmaker. But he soon discovered the beauty of still photographs during one of his trips and soon embraced being a photographer. “Mostly, I translate my ideas with wide angles to show what’s really going on,” Drey said. “Sometimes, I use prime lenses to showcase the subject.” Drey’s specialization ranges from human interest to portrait, but his forte lies in travel. A self-confessed heavy packer, Drey brings a lot of equipment on his trips. His primary shooter is the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II which is often equipped with either a standard 24-105 mm zoom lens or a 35 mm and 85 prime lenses. He also keeps filters inside his camera bag to produce enchanting and magical outdoor photos. For hyperlapse and timelapse, his go-to gears are the Canon EOS 80D and the DJI Mavic Air Drone. Reliable for underwater shots, he always makes sure to toss his GoPro Hero 7 in a hand-carry bag. Frequently traveling with his girlfriend, the professional videographer and editor mostly shoots in RAW format but always keeps a backup file. He always doubles the effort to make sure

that he gets what he had envisioned before going on the trip. As someone who wears many hats in content production, photography gives him more creative freedom because he can present the world in different perspectives. He happily said that his most favorite photograph was shot in Kota Kinabalu, where he’s dancing with his girlfriend on the beach with a breathtaking sunset on the background. Unleashing his inner visual storytelling skills, he grabbed his tripod and made a setup which gave him the result that he wanted. Upon posting the photo on his feed, Shangri-La Rasa Ria, a luxury resort in the coastal city, noticed his photo and shared it on their page. Drey wants to inspire others through his photography.

Through his personal page, Visual Transit, he shares his travel videos and photos taken from his local and international trips. And just like any other travel photography enthusiasts, he hopes to collaborate with other big names in the industry. His ultimate dream is to take a drone shot of Madrid. He doesn’t have a concrete photography philosophy, but he always follows his personal mantra: do what makes you happy and keep doing it for the rest of your life. When asked about his message for fellow shutterbugs, Drey has this to say: “Never stop learning, always be humble, and ask. It’s okay to be vulnerable and feel stupid sometimes. It’s part of everything. Have a clear purpose on why you will do it, and execute! That’s the most important part because if you keep dreaming, it will only be a dream for the rest of your life.”

TRAVEL

Feast your eyes on San Francisco’s architectural heritage Words and photos by Marlet D. Salazar

Growing up, I didn’t realize that the song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” by American singer Tony Bennet would, one day, have meaning to me. I thought it was just a popular song with a really lovely melody until I was given the opportunity to visit the City by the Bay. San Francisco is, indeed, an enchanting city. To say that I was smitten is an understatement. The Bay City has been holding my heart prisoner for a long time now and going back is not an option but a must. I always liken San Francisco to a children’s pop-up book. Some of the houses in the iconic streets look like those in storybook fairy tales. Its architectural heritage, according to Curbed San Francisco, is inspired by Gothic, Queen Anne, Tudor, and Victorian styles, to name a few. Scanning the streets was always a treat.

Grace Cathedral

San Francisco Chronicle Building

One of my most memorable accidental stops was the one at Grace Cathedral. I was looking for another tourist destination and couldn’t find it. I did not use any navigational apps because I wanted to explore the city using the exceptionally detailed map, which was very easy to understand, that I got from the lobby of where I was staying, Fort Mason.

The San Francisco Chronicle Building stands out among the uberly urban design in downtown San Francisco. It is a must-see for every journalist or writer like me. The monochromatic building was designed by the Chicago architects Burnham & Root. After the 1906 earthquake, which damaged the city significantly, Willis Polk, a native of San Francisco, rebuilt the building.

Grace Cathedral is an Episcopalian Church located at Nob Hill (which is really hilly). Online information says that its architecture is inspired by French Gothic similar to the recently razed Notre Dame in Paris. If the facade is inviting enough, inside is a jaw-dropping design of huge stained glass as well as several murals that depict significant events in the city’s history. It was quite a treat not only to the eyes but also to the soul.

City Hall The San Francisco City Hall, designed by architect Arthur Brown Jr., left me dumbfounded when my feet led me there. I think I lost my way for the nth time and I found myself in front of this commanding architectural wonder. The massive dome, which stands at 307 feet, is visible in some of the hilly streets of the city. It was inspired by Baroque domes in Paris. The sprawling open space is as beautiful in the evening as it is in the daytime.

Golden Gate Bridge Still, the Golden Gate Bridge rules them all. Yes, I did cross the bridge when I got there... on foot. It was mid-afternoon when I got there via the free bus that roams every few minutes from the pickup point in Presidio. The connection I felt was indescribable. I think it was there that I vowed to come back for a visit, if not spend the rest of my life there. The steel bridge was completed in 1937 with the initial objective of replacing ferry rides from the city to Marin County to the north. The towers on either end of the bridge stand at 746-ft tall and the deck is 90-ft wide. While it still serves its purpose of connecting one end to another, it has turned into an icon that represents everything San Francisco.

Painted Ladies I actually wanted to see the house where “Princess Diaries” was shot. But for some reason, I found myself admiring “The Painted Ladies” in the midmorning sun. I sat under a tree across from the street quietly playing Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” in my head.

The brightly colored Victorian houses were built between 1892 and 1896. Web writeup says that artist Butch Kardum, who is from San Francisco, experimented with bright hues on his own home. Several houses in the neighborhood followed, which led to what is now among the most visited places in the Bay City area. Palace of Fine Arts

I was extremely lucky to have found Fort Mason as the place to stay during the break from work. I had the luxury of lounging on the grass along with others who brought their pets at the park while feasting my eyes on one of the most beautiful creations in the world while the sun sets. The song is true. Anyone who’s been to San Francisco surely left his or her heart in the Bay City. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

It was originally built as a venue for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition. Today, it is not only a famous tourist destination but also an events place. Its design was inspired by Greco-Roman heritage. The enormous colonnades also boast of impressive and meticulously designed ceilings. Its surroundings are peppered with flowers, gardens, and lagoons. FOOD

Casa Reyes Bistro Filipino Serving timeless comfort food that reminds of home

Words by Jewel Sta. Ana Photos by Chini Soriano and Jezeil Romero

The local gastronomical scene is inundated with dishes from other cultures, which might explain why the younger crowd developed an extremely discriminating palate. Restaurants from all over the world, from fine dining to fast-food, open branches in the country in recognition of the Filipinos’ appreciation of good food. Still, people always go back to their roots longing for that comfort food that reminds them of home. Who doesn’t miss the aroma of spices in the kitchen? Who didn’t grow up with mom or dad whipping up a sumptuous Sunday meal? With fast-food joints burgeoning in urban areas, finding something close to a home-cooked meal can sometimes be futile.

The facade of the resturant also features the artisanal Pinoy gelato cart

guests at the entrance of the branch at Promenade. These pieces of memorabilia alone distinguish the Casa Reyes from other ultra-modern restaurants along the strip. Honoring the legacy of the Reyeses, the young restaurateur placed black and white photographs of matriarchs Teresita “Mama Sita” Reyes and her mother, Maria Lourdes Reyes.

This is exactly what Christine Reyes Dayco wanted to address when she opened Casa Reyes Bistro Filipino in 2006 with branches at Connecticut Arcade and Promenade Mall in Greenhills.

“As someone who came from a family of cooks, I was inspired to follow the path of my ancestors and establish my own name.” Dayco said.

“I want our customers to remember their heritage and feel at home whenever they enter our restaurant.” Dayco said.

Finding her calling in continuing the family’s legacy, Reyes honed her cooking skills by studying abroad. She used the modern kitchen techniques she learned into further improving the family’s recipes putting fresh takes to appeal to the young generation. Reyes is careful not to lose the authentic Filipino flavor Casa Reyes is best known for though.

Reyes wanted to give diners the feel of real Filipino home adorning the restaurants’ interiors with trinkets of antique decors. Items like rattan baskets, wooden horse, and calesa greet the

The food Casa Reyes serves familiar Filipino dishes but Reyes upped the ante by adding different ingredients to give the food a unique flavor that customers will remember the restaurant for. Some of the best-sellers include the three-pieces and juicy Chicken Barbecue (PHP 320), the mouthwatering Crispy Pata at Kare-Kare (PHP 1,230), the Crispy Dinuguan (PHP 395) topped with crispy bagnet bits, the tender Wagyu Mechado (PHP 510) , and Butter and Garlic Shrimps with Creamy Aligue Sauce (PHP 430). People remember the meal because of mouth-melting desserts and Reyes knows how to make meals at the restaurant memorable. “I don’t scrimp on ingredients even if they are expensive because it brings out more unique flavors to our dishes. ” Dayco said. Casa Reyes created its own gelato flavors including Chocnut at Flat Tops (a taste of every Filipino childhood), Ube Halaya at Keso, Dark Tablea and Sea Salt, Choco Mallows (PHP 110 single flavor, PHP 165 double flavor), and the Salted Egg Bibingka Cheesecake (PHP 140), a fusion between the fluffy Japanese cheesecake and our very own bibingka. Pair all these sweets with Barako Drip Coffee (PHP 95) and you have the perfect Filipino meal.

To appeal to the young professionals, Casa Reyes started offering sub-zero beers and premium meat dishes of Angus Rib Eye Steak with Truffle Butter and Sriracha Tomahawk BBQ Chops.

“I want to offer something that would remind them of home because at the end of the day, we would always go back where we truly belong.” Dayco said.

Dayco said the success of the two branches inspires her to open more in the coming years. Her immediate plans, however, is offering frozen food items, which will appeal to professionals who are used to microwave their food bought from convenience stores.

A bakeshop is also in the pipeline and catering services is not far behind. For now, Casa Reyes Bistro Filipino will continue to put Filipino food at the prime spot of food choices among the young professionals and families, too

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

Words by Marlet D. Salazar

People close to me know very well how much I admire former US President Barack Obama not only as a leader but as a human being. Like many of his supporters, I find him amiable, extremely likable and, at one point, even faultless. Then I stumbled upon his memoir titled “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.” I had read his other book first, “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream,” but the former is the one that I have the most vivid recollection of its contents—because, in this book, Obama didn’t hold back.

ambitious young man who wanted to prove to the world what an African can accomplish. But it was his going back to his father’s hometown in Kenya and meeting his half-siblings that provided so much emotional investment in me. Note that Obama is the only child of his parents. He has half-sisters and half-brothers from both sides. His “homecoming” exposed him to the bright and dark side of having — and living — with extended families. He saw how his father, through stories from aunts and uncles, worked

“Dreams” is basically just about Obama’s life long before he became the 44th President of the United States of America. It traces his roots as a mixed-race American, although these days, people seem to forget that he is also half-white not just half-black. His mother’s name is Stanley Ann Dunham, an anthropologist who lived a nomadic life in three countries.

“Change won’t come from the top, Change will come from mobilized grassroots.” “Beneath the layers of hurt, beneath the ragged laughter, I heard a willingness to endure. Endure—and make music that wasn’t there before.”

More than the recollection of his journey as a young man in search of his identity, Obama showed how gifted a writer he is. The prose is lyrically written as if the words came from an unknown receptacle of vocabulary. The way he wove through the narrative jumping from one period to another is seamless.

Obama grew up as a typical teenager who lived a precarious life. He had tricks up his sleeves and was once a constant worry to his grandparents, whom he lived with most of his life.

“My identity might begin with the fact of my race, but it didn’t, couldn’t end there. At least that’s what I would choose to believe.”

Obama chose to become a community organizer in Chicago. He gathered local residents and campaigned to promote common interests in the community. It was a path that brought him closer to people and led him to the White House.

When Obama was only 2 years old, his father walked out on them, while the family was living in Hawaii. He lived in Indonesia when his mother married a government employee.

These are the things Obama’s father would have wanted to accomplish for himself. He was an

“You might be locked in a world, not of your own making, her eyes said, but you still have a claim on how it is shaped. You still have responsibilities.”

helped shape him as a person with a good heart. In the book, his grandparents often reminded him to look at himself first before passing any judgment or that things aren’t always about him.

The death of Obama’s father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., a Kenyan senior governmental economist, prompted him to discover the life he never experienced with this parent.

However, angst and all, Obama was always brilliant in school. While it showed that at one point he didn’t know what to do with his life, this uncertainty didn’t diminish his aptitude for learning. When he overcame what most adolescents experienced, the period of indecision and lack of direction, the young Obama returned to Hawaii and graduated from Punahou School in 1979. In the US, he did well at Occidental College and when his brilliance started to get noticed, he studied at Columbia University and aced law school at Harvard.

his way to earn a name in public office. He saw the perils of living in a country where security is almost non-existent. More importantly, he saw how this side of him values familial relations. While the book is about his father, Obama paid respect to his mother and gave us a picture of someone who would get up at four in the morning to force feed him and teach him his lessons so he could catch up.

I find it remarkable how someone like former President Barack Obama hurdled, with such class and poise, all the adversities of being born mixed-race. He didn’t just conquer the almost insurmountable feat of leading the most powerful nation but he also displayed his heart by incessantly being kind to everyone. It was this and his leadership style of intelligence and compassion that endeared him to me.

From a reader’s point of view, I believe that the experiences he had with his father’s family somehow made a huge impact on how Obama became a leader, while his mother’s parents

I have this habit of hugging a book I truly love right after I turn the last page. I did it with “Dreams from My Father” and it took me a while to dry the tears in my eyes.

Apple confirms killing iTunes at WWDC 2019 Days before Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, there was a buzz that the company is discontinuing its music component, iTunes. The tech giant confirmed the news along with its other announcements on software and hardware upgrades. iTunes As anticipated, Apple made the announcement that it is “killing” iTunes and breaking it down the once integrated music platform into three different services. When users update their devices to the new macOS dubbed as Catalina later this year, they will get three apps which are Apple Music, Apple Podcast, and Apple TV. The move, according to online observers, is to simplify the user experience. Apple first released iTunes in January 2001. Mac Pro Ridiculed for its “cheese grater-look,” the new Mac Pro packs power running on Intel Xeon processor with up to 28 cores with 1.5TB of system memory. If you feel the system memory is not enough, Apple adds six slots for memory expansion and eight PCI slots including two USB-A ports, two USB-C, and three Thunderbolt ports. Clearly intended for content creators, the Mac Pro’s graphics card can play three streams of 8K video or 12 streams for 4K videos. The new module supports AMD Radeon Pro 580X or the Radeon Pro Vega II which is designed to be configured to add up to two Vega IIs.

iTunes is now Apple Music, Apple Podcast, and Apple TV.

iPadOS A move that many observers say is an indication of more surprises to come, Apple is giving iPad its own operating system. Many tech and gadget experts say this may be the harbinger for the company to transform iPad into a “main computer. The OS will allow iPad to exist into its own ecosystem with one of the hyped features being the split screen where users will be able to work on multiple windows. The company powered up its own browser, Safari, to resemble the desktop experience. MacOS Catalina MacOS Catalina update is said to be coming later this year with a new feature to look forward to which

is the “Sidecar” which will make an iPad a support display or drawing surface. Under Project Catalyst, formerly known as Marzipan, Apple wants to give developers a way to seamlessly drop iPad apps to their Macs using Xcode. Siri New features on Siri are more like enhancements. Although some of these enhancements resemble those that Microsoft has unveiled in its own developers’ conference. One of these similarities is the objective of making their own Digital Assistants open for use for third-party apps. Apple is making Siri’s voice more “human-like” and is said to be “entirely generated by the software.”

policy. Extended warranty services within Asia-Pacific partners will be available soon.

That is why we are now providing this product,” said Stephen Khaw, chair, Esquire Tech.

“We decided to launch it first in the Philippines because we can see that in the last two years, there’s has been an increase in spending power due to economic growth, which fueled a greater demand for high-end smartphones. But a big trade-off with the high-end phones right now, despite the technological advancements, is that they are still breakable. Another revolutionary product is the AIRSIM, a travel data roaming sim that works in over 100 countries. Saving subscribers expensive roaming charges, it can transform into a local SIM of a specific destination. CARBURETOR Words by Jose Alvarez

The very word carburetor itself seems like a relic of the ancient past. However, the carburetor is a pretty recent invention. It was used in cars for much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A carburetor is a device that mixes air and fuel for the internal combustion engine to create a proper air to fuel ratio for combustion. A carburetor works using Bernoulli’s principle: the faster the speed of air, the lower its static pressure, and the higher its dynamic pressure. The throttle actuates caburetor mechanisms and meters the flow of air being carried into the engine. The speed of the flow and its static pressure determines the amount of fuel drawn into the airstream itself. The inventor of the carburetor was Samuel Morey, who created the device in 1826. However, the first person to file a patent for a carburetor for a specific use (a petroleum engine) was Siegfried Marcus in 1872. Marcus was also the first person to propel a vehicle using petroleum in the 1870s. Karl Benz (of Mercedes-Benz fame) developed internal combustion engines and their components, and also filed a patent for a carburetor in 1888. Carburetors in the late 19th century combined air with fuel by passing it over the surface of gasoline. Wilbert Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler utilized a float carburetor based on an atomizer nozzle in 1885. So many people used their model that there were numerous patent lawsuits. British courts rejected their claim in favor of Edward

Butler, who made a spray carburetor in 1884 on his petrol cycle (largely considered one of the precursors of the modern motorcycle). By 1893, carburetors were considered for stationary engines that are typically used in factories, generators, pumps, and more. Frederick William Lanchester, an Englishman, used a wick carburetor, which was an improvement over the atomizer nozzle. The wick carburetor filtered out impurities, making the automobile more efficient. Caburetors were largely used in cars all throughout the 20th century. However, fuel injection would take its place, but it would be decades before fuel injection became preferred over carburetors. Adams Farwell invented a fuel injection system in 1910, but it was generally used for diesel engines. A 1949 issue of Automotive Digest praised fuel injection, saying, “Some automotive men feel that fuel injection

for passenger automobiles is nearing the climax in experimentation and may soon make its bow to the driving public. The carburetor took another 30-plus years to fade out of automobiles. By 1986, all gasoline engines had fuel injection systems. Some notable cars that still had carburetors include the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (1990), Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SUV, 1991), Isuzu (light trucks, 1994), and some cars in other countries, such as Australia, continued to use carburetors as late as 2003. Carburetors still have a use in small engines today, such as in lawn mowers and rototillers. They are also used in some aircraft. However, the need of this device has propelled technological innovation in the automotive industry to fuel injection, which is the standard in automotive engines.
