INTRODUCTION Festival season is upon us at last, to save us from the painful boredom of work, or, if you’re unemployed, to hinder the perpetual trap of watching chihuahuas dance and cats do funny shit on YouTube. However, it is only when you reflect on the year that you realise how many incredible festivals there are in Australia, feeding our cultural hunger for fun, friendship and exploration. You begin to realise that there is no festival season in Australia. It is year round. Festival culture in Australia is thriving. Whether you love to headbang, mosh, dance, fist pump, shuffle or all five at the same time, you’ll find the perfect festival for you in The Big Ticket. Whether you like to engage with the raw majesty of live music, peruse quirky stalls, or take your shirt off and lure in all the ladies with your powerful pecs of perfection like I do, you’ll learn about the right festival for you here. There are festivals for all people, scenes and values inside this magazine, yearning to be discovered. Inside you’ll find our festival tips to enhance your festival experience. There’s also an article on festival safety to ensure you’re safe enough to enjoy the festival and return again next year. Are you forgetful? Remember to utilise our comprehensive checklist to ensure you’ve packed the necessities. Q: Will there be a trivia page? A: Yes, on page 65. We even have a cheeky guide to festival fashion Do’s and Don’ts. Also, take a glance at our giveaways page and enter the competitions to win amazing prizes such as bikes, DVDs and guitar equipment. There was a recent neuropsychology study that demonstrated that the parts of the brain stimulated when at a concert where the same parts stimulated when people claimed to have

8

a religious experience (we only discussed this in my psychology class so I can’t confirm the accuracy of this claim). It is easy to see why this is logical. We enjoy congregating at festivals with our closest friends and worshiping our favourite bands onstage as if they are gods. Nietzsche was right when he said, “Every day I count wasted in which there has been no dancing”. And so was another influential existential philosopher, Rick James (Dave Chappelle), whose phrase, “It’s a celebration, bitches!” encapsulates the very essence of festivals. Festivals are events for celebration, happiness and life-experience. Above all, they teach us to appreciate the moment, and to fulfil its potential. I hope you enjoy reading and learning from The Big Ticket as much as I enjoyed ripping my facial hair out, hissing at co-workers and throwing several large computer monitors into a wall to create The Big Ticket. Above all, I hope that you attend some festivals this year, and come back with bruises, torn clothes, a missing shoe and most importantly, a story. Welcome to The Big Ticket 2011-2012, Nick Taras Editor

FORMED FROM A COLLABORATION OF CREWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD THE 2012 ECLIPSE FESTIVAL IN CAIRNS WILL BE AN EXPLOSION OF MUSIC, ART AND CULTURE

ECLIPSE2012.COM

TAC: VANESSA Death wasn’t a choice for many. Sadly, some people were terminally ill, some were at the wrong place at the wrong time, some were just simply old. Then there were those that “didn’t feel drunk” or thought that “they wouldn’t get caught”. These people would never be aware of the pain, emotional trauma and hollowness they introduced into their friends’ and family’s lives. Approximately 23 per cent of all road deaths in Victoria last year were young adults aged from 18 to 25. However, that age bracket only made up for 13 per cent of all Victorian licence holders. This is why the TAC introduced Vanessa around six years ago – to promote road safety to a younger audience. Music lovers planning on getting absolutely mad wacked at this year’s festivals should keep an eye out for Vanessa, the best friend you could have at a festival – one that could save your life. Vanessa, a bright orange converted booze bus, will travel around various festivals and events to provide visitors with a place to chill out, sober-up and take a breath test before they plan their journey home. Vanessa is a space to relax on the comfy couches, enjoy some free water and coffee and view the winning Make a Film, Make a Difference short films on big screens.

“Vanessa offers a fun environment where they give you a free coffee, and I remember they took a photo of me and my mate in the bus and then printed it into a keyring which I got to take home. The vibe of the bus is appealing because it doesn’t feel like you’ve left somewhere fun to get a boring breath test, but instead it feels like the party continues while at the same time making sure you’re safe to drive,” says Hannah, 24. Whilst everyone is encouraged to utilise the potentially life-saving services of Vanessa, she’s particularly useful for those on their P-plates. “It’s good be able to check before you leave, because on your P-plates you can’t have anything, so you never know if you’re still over from the night before,” explains Paul, 21.

DON’T FORGET TO LIKE VANESSA ON FACEBOOK: FACEBOOK.COM/ILIKEVANESSA

20

This year the TAC also introduced Mini Vanessa, which hit up the alpine slopes to provide snow lovers with breath tests and general tips on road safety during the dangerous winter season. Since 2008, 28 people have been killed on roads around the Alpine National Park. Eight of those were aged between 18 and 30. This winter, four fatalities have been recorded for the area. Mini Vanessa also offered free coffee vouchers, water, handwarmers and an opportunity to test out beer goggles, all combining to fulfil Mini Vanessa’s desire to keep skiers and snowboarders safe. “Knowing you have that place to relax and escape the festival is very comforting, as these events can often be daunting and really full on,” says Dom, 22. “The financial risk alone is enough motivation to find out (if you’re over the limit) before jumping in the car. A $300 festival could end up costing you $600 and more. The free coffee and water is good too, just to make sure,” adds Will, 21. The TAC have the following tips for festivalgoers to stay safe: • Eat regularly if you’re planning to drink alcohol • Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones • Don’t drive if you’re unsure about your BAC levels – test yourself first at a free TAC breathalyser station • Drinking the night before can affect your BAC the next day

Finally, I’d like to leave you with an anecdote. In Year 11 my legal studies class visited a Melbourne prison to learn about the prison system. A 20-year-old prisoner, who was in prison for drink driving, spoke to my class about the experience. One drunken night he jumped behind the wheel of his Subaru and smashed into a pole within two minutes of driving, killing his four best friends. I remember his dry, creaky voice telling us, “I don’t need to be in jail, though. Living without my best mates, and knowing I killed them, is punishment enough.” Furthermore, he’s not only wasting the more fun years of his life but now he also has a criminal record, likely inhibiting him from travelling to a lot of places. It’s something that will always stick with him, an indelible reminder that one decision has cost him his best friends, his best years, and his highest goals. It’s just not worth it. Have an amazing time at this year’s summer festivals, but make sure you’re around to come back next year. Be safe.

e c l ip s e 2012 WEB? eclipse2012.com WHEN? Saturday November 10 – Friday November 16, 2012

WHERE? Far north Queensland - with the closest city being Cairns. WHO? Naturally you can expect to see some of the biggest and best producers, DJs and artists from around the world covering the styles of trance, progressive, techno, dub, breaks, house, ambient and everything in between.

WORTH? Tickets on sale in November – check the website for first release early-bird specials. MAKE SURE YOU BRING: Water, and refill container. Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Warm clothes and spare clothes (conditions at night may be cool), camping equipment, tent, sleeping bag, tarp and poles for shade. Swimming gear, spending money, torch, earplugs. Dancing feet, smile, costumes and anything fun! WOW FACTOR? A total eclipse of the Sun will occur over northern Australia early in the morning of Wednesday November 14, 2012.

This spectacular phenomenon is probably the most awe-inspiring event in the natural world. An eclipse of the sun occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the Sun. The Sun is much larger than the Moon and is also much further away, such that the two bodies appear to be about the same size in the sky. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon moves in front of the Sun and completely covers it. This casts a shadow on the Earth’s surface. As the moon orbits the Earth and the Earth rotates, the shadow moves across the Earth’s surface in a narrow path generally from west to east.

FESTIVAL-GOERS AT ECLIPSE 2012 ARE PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO: Experience a natural celestial event like no other! Or perhaps they just love quality electronic music, but in the end the eclipse will enchant and wow all, it’s truly an unparalleled experience.

IF THE FESTIVAL WERE A CELEBRITY OR FICTIONAL CHARACTER, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I can’t really think of anything fictional that comes up to scratch, we’re talking about a one-off gathering in a stunning part of Australia for seven days with the most visually and spiritually stunning natural event you can get.

OTHER: Eclipse 2012 will be a collaboration involving some of the best known event organisers from around the globe, including Rainbow Serpent Festival, Symbiosis and Glade Festival plus support from some other wellknown crews. With the eclipse falling on the special date of 2012, approximately one month before the long awaited end of the Mayan calendar cycle there will be a strong focus on healing, arts and holistic information.

IDE TO HAVING U G T KE C TI IG B E TH TIVAL SAFE FUN AT A FES Everything you need to know about staying safe at a festival basically comes down to not being an idiot, being conscious of your surroundings and being considerate of the people around you. But, just to be sure, here are some specifics about going to a festival, having a good time, and coming back safely at the end of it.

KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND One of the first things to do when you get to a festival is to have a walk around and check out where everything is. Some of the things to look out for and familiarise yourself with are drinking fountains, or wherever you can get fresh water, the first aid tent or ambulance services, where all the food shops are and, last but certainly not least, find out where the toilets are. Because whether you have a drug-related medical emergency, or a dodgy-kebab related toilet emergency on your hands, knowing your way to the appropriate facilities can save your festival experience from potential disaster.

BE DARING, BE CARING

42

WEATHER: BE PREPARED Be conscious of what the weather is going to be like and prepared if it changes, especially for longer festivals. Take precautions and remember that you’re going to be at the mercy of the elements for basically whole days at a time, so if it’s raining you’re going to get wet, and if it’s sunny you’re going to get burnt. Things like waterproof poncho style raincoat things and sunscreen are a must. Also, if it’s hot, remember to drink water, especially if you are going to be drinking alcohol. Having a few drinks at a festival is always fun, but getting drunk and dehydrated and crashing at 5pm in the afternoon isn’t, especially when you end up missing some sweet headline band action.

CROWD CONTROL One of the most fun and one of the most dangerous areas in any festival can be the moshpit. This is a big one to invoke the essential “don’t be an idiot” approach to going to festivals. Don’t push people in a crowd – if there are too many people in the space, it’s not going to be fun for anyone. Overcrowded moshpits literally kill people, so chill out and be respectful of people and their personal space. The fact is, if someone got to the front of the moshpit before you, they probably like the band more than you and deserve to be there, so respect that, and you won’t get any dirty looks or risk being punched. Crowd surfing is another thing to watch out for. In the right environment, it can be fun, but it will often get you kicked out and it’s not always fun for the people that you’re kicking in the face while you’re up there. So basically, be respectful of people’s space in a crowd, and everyone wins.

CLOTHES: COMFORT IS FUNFORT

SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE

As mentioned, make sure you wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather. If it’s raining and your Slayer t-shirt gets wet and you don’t have anything else to wear, you’re gonna have a bad time. Another thing to remember is footwear, you’re going to be on your feet for a whole day, or for longer festivals, for days at a time, so comfortable shoes are an absolute must. Moshing with blisters is particularly unpleasant. Also, it’s important to remember that by the end of a festival, everyone is going to be dirty and gross anyway, so don’t stress too much and wear something comfortable that you can just get down in and get your festival freak on.

When it comes to drugs and alcohol, festivals are not the place to risk overdoing it. The fact is, if you’re pissed and throwing up or passed out, you’re going to miss the acts that you paid to see, and your friends will be stuck looking after you, and that’s a shit situation for everyone. Remember that alcohol can stay in your system for a while so make sure you do a breath test at a Vanessa bus if there’s one at your festival to make sure you’re safe to drive home.

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR BUDDIES Being with the right people is key to having a good time at a festival, and it’s important to stick with your friends and look out for each other. Getting separated can be a real pain in the arse, and it’s just not worth the worry. Organise a place to meet if you get separated and stick to it. And perhaps most importantly, if your friend’s not well, look after them. Get them some water and chill out for a bit, and if it’s serious, find some first aid. You would expect the same from them, and it always feels good to help out a friend in need.

Taking drugs* is something that tends to happen a lot at festivals, but they’re not essential to enjoy festivals. In the end, the people you are with will make or break a festival. So look after your friends, and go to festivals with people you can trust to look after you so if you end up needing help, you know that you will get it. Basically, don’t be an idiot and look after yourself, and one another. That was my final thought, and I am Jerry Springer. By Paul Guardiani *Furst Media does not condone the use of illicit substances or under age drinking.

The experience is all part of contributing to greater causes in the community. From the money raised, a large donation will be made to the Lighthouse Foundation for their work in helping troubled youth, giving them an opportunity for a better life.

D ADVICE N A S IP T L A IV T S E F CAMPING

LOST YOUR FRIENDS?

If you’re going with a big group a friends, setup your tents to form the circumference of a circle with a large area in-between. You can then connect a tarp to a few poles and create a covered area with tables and chairs etc. Bring a flag to tie somewhere high so your campsite is easily identifiable. There’s nothing worse than trying to find your tent at night when you’re drunk and there’s no way of distinguishing it from the others. You’ll end up having to stumble into some random’s tent and spooning the creepy old man inside just to keep warm, but because it’s his tent you’ll have to be the small spoon. So bring a fucking flag and tie that mofo high.

There is nothing worse than losing your friends at a festival and then your phones can’t get reception. Check out iPhone and Android apps such as Real Time GPS Tracking. They’re normally either free or quite cheap and can help reunite you with your comrades. You don’t want to be that awkward freak dancing by yourself or standing close to the people next to you in order to disguise the fact that you’re actually watching bands alone. Bring a phone charger compatible with your car too!

CARS If you’re driving to a festival with friends, bring a spare set of car keys and either keep one hidden in your tent or give it to a friend to carry. Make sure you give the key to a responsible friend who isn’t a douchebag drunk, otherwise when you ask for it back you’ll get the “What key?” response or the “I fucking ate it bro” response. Back in 2009 I saw an RACV car getting a workout at a festival because punters, including a couple of my friends, locked their keys inside their cars. Anything is possible when you’re smashed.

NEED TO FIND A TICKET TO A SOLD-OUT FESTIVAL? FACEBOOK! I’ve bought tickets to two soldout festivals in yesteryears simply by logging onto their official festival page weeks before the event. People may feel sick, have work or circumstances change and they need to sell tickets; you’ll see a tonne of people posting on the event wall trying to sell tickets. Remember – always buy tickets legally, and always from appropriate festival outlets if it’s not sold-out.

BUYING DRINKS Often at day festivals and sometimes at camping festivals, drinks are sold via tokens i.e. you first buy tokens and then go to the bar and exchange those for drinks. When you and your friends buy tokens, instead of buying five each and planning to use them throughout the day, buy in rounds instead. Those tokens are easily lost and a lot of the time they aren’t even used so money is wasted. Instead, have a friend buy the first round and so forth. That way all tokens are used, and utilised according to drink need.

PHONES Mobile phone: turn all unneeded settings down. Put your background to low contrast, and turn it off when you’re sleeping or when you’re with all your friends. As aforementioned, phone networks rarely are reliable at festivals so make sure you have a meeting point at the end of certain gigs. Another suggestion is to take a pen and paper and leave a note at the campsite.

SITE MAP AND SET TIMES Before you leave it’s a good idea to print off the festival map and set times for each artist. You don’t want to be in the shituation of trying to find where your favourite band is playing and end up missing out.

YOU KNOW MY TIPS DON’T LIE!

ENROL NO FOR 2012W

FESTIVAL FASHION DO wear something comfortable. Body con dresses and heeled boots are out, as are maxi dresses and fiddly jewellery. Try a loose, baggy t-shirt worn as a dress with flat sandals. Chino shorts with a short-sleeved shirt – a much better alternative to the tacky slogan singlet – are perfect for boys.

WHAT TO WEAR TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL We’ve done the hard work so you can focus on waking up at 7.58am, or whatever other ridiculous time your chosen festival promoter has decided to release tickets to the public. DON’T wear thongs. They might seem great when you’re walking to the festival feeling on top of the world, but by the end of it you’ll be nursing trampled feet and nasty wounds that wouldn’t look out of place on Embarrassing Bodies.

DO bring something for a cool change. Chances are your natural amphitheatre of choice can turn from a dry-as-a-desert dustbowl to a potential flash flood zone in a matter of minutes, so make sure you pick up a plastic poncho. By Estelle Griepink

DON’T wear a bumbag. Under any circumstances. DON’T be a phony. Word on the street is that snapback caps and basketball jerseys are hella cool again, yo. But sending out an ironic tribute to an obscure American sporting team isn’t really that fly, plus you’ll look like a total try hard. DON’T be so lazy that you just walk around in your underwear. Yes, it gets really hot at festivals. But is that really an excuse for borderline public nakedness? Ladies, a bra is not a top. Calling it a ‘bralette’ or ‘bustier’ does not make it a top either (Editor’s Note: Yes it does. Ladies please ignore this advice). And denim cut offs need to sufficiently cover you in order to be classified as shorts (Editor’s Note: No they don’t. Ignore this too) DO be sunsmart. Sunscreen is essential, as is a hat, if you can hold onto it throughout the day. It also means leaving the Ray-Bans at home and getting a cheaper pair of sunnies. Servos sell $10 sunglasses - perfect.

MEEMEEP.COM

Want to turn your trips to and from your favourite festivals this year into a little extra cash? Well MeeMeep just might be the answer. Born out of the collaborative consumption movement, which was named one of Time magazine’s 10 ideas that will change the world, MeeMeep is a Melbourne-based social network start-up that connects everyday people on the move to people with stuff to move. MeeMeep.com is all about helping people to help each other, and change the nature of transport forever by making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. It enables people on the move, who are looking to make a little extra cash, to log their journeys. It then matches these people with others who have things to move in those same areas or on those same or similar routes. This means people can now make a little extra cash doing what they were already going to do. So just think, if you’re on your way to a festival and you log your journey, MeeMeep can put you in touch with people who can pay you to move things in the same direction at the same time. Likewise, if you need something moved, like some extra camping gear you don’t have room for, or even the ticket you left at home, MeeMeep will put you in touch with people who can help you out. And in case you were wondering – don’t worry it’s safe. MeeMeep uses bank or credit card details to verify people’s identities. They also hold onto the money until both parties confirm the transaction has been successfully competed.
