MUSIC FESTIVAL POSITIVES There are things people do at m usic f estivals that str uth me f r iggin’ prue gets me blood boilin ’! For example, anybody wearing a morphsuit, anybody blocking my view of the stage by sitting on someone’s shoulders, and an ybody filming through their iP ad should be kic ked out. One time I saw someone wearing a morphsuit while sitting on top of someone ’s shoulders and then they star ted filming the set with their iPad – I almost died guys. However, what’s annoying to me, is hilarious to someone else. To each their own, so here are the positives and negatives of the silly things people do at music festivals. MAKING THAT HAND GESTURE WHERE YOU FOLD THE MIDDLE THREE FINGERS AND SYMBOL ISE A BONG This hand gesture is normally followed by the phrase “surf ’s up”, “radical” or “keep it loose”. It’s a great way to look like a laid bac k surfer!
NOVELTY COSTUMES Morphsuits cover your entire face and body, which means you are technically anonymous and free to do whate ver you feel like. So there’s that. Also, one time at F alls Festival in 2009, there was a rumour that Moby had setup tent in the c ampgrounds but wore a red morphsuit to disguise himself . It was just the dumbest thing ever, but I swear that guy in the r ed morphsuit was getting f ree drinks f or the r est of the f estival. Onesies, groups wearing matching t-shirts etc. fit into this category. HIGH FIVING My friends and I once decided to par ody all the joc ks from high school by high fiving each other in a really exaggerated way when we greet each other. Problem was we kept doing it, and through parody, people now think w e seriously enjoy high fiving. We’ve become the joc ks. So postmodern! If y ou high five, especially at a f estival, and it ’s not the ‘80s, f estivalgoers will think y ou are a banana. But may be it’s because they’re jealous of how m uch fun you’re having.
TELLING ME HOW DRUNK YOU ARE There are no positives in trying to describe how drunk you are. The conversation goes nowhere. “Oh man, I’m so drunk.” “Really? How drunk?” “Like, so drunk.” “Having a good time?” “Oh man, I’m so drunk.” FILMING EVERYTHING If you film a live set, you get to relive your favourite moments from the festival over and over again, and show it to people who didn ’t want to be at the festival.
PLAYING MUSIC AT THE CAMPSITE Seeing the musicians onstage is just a bonus, I paid $200 to hear you strum guitar drunk. TAKING YOUR SHIRT OFF What a great way to cool off hey! Clothes just absorb body odour; it’s better to let y our armpits breathe a little, you know, into the faces of the crowd.

What are you possibly getting out of it? “Oh look, there goes those really cool guys dressed as cricketers.” Or do you take photos of it so you can go to work and show everyone how cool you are? “There’s me and the boys wearing matching tops. We’re a pretty wild bunch!”

The ‘Peace’ sign is still around, because who needs activism when you can just make a sign with your hands. What’s wrong with the thumbs up? It’s a good sign, a strong sign, a proud sign.
TELLING ME HOW DRUNK YOU ARE See left. FILMING EVERYTHING Your footage will be unwatchable, because you don’t understand that you can’t dance and film at the same time. It’ll be shaky, the audio will be muffled, and you’ll find out that someone else filmed it better and put it on YouTube already. Everybody behind you will hate you, and you will be forced to make a gesture with your hands where you fold the middle three fingers and symbolise a bong and say “keep it loose” in order to smooth the situation.
HIGH FIVING Ugh. PLAYING MUSIC AT THE CAMPSITE Most camping festivals have music from around midday to very late at night. The eight or so hours of silence in between are for one thing: Pokémon Red. Or sleep. If any of your friends say “sleep when you’re dead guys”, pack up their tent and sleeping bag for them. TAKING YOUR SHIRT OFF The two things I love on Facebook most are when girls post that Marilyn Monroe quote about “if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best”. The other one time I get really excited is when a festival is approaching and dudes on my Facebook upload selfies of themselves flexing their biceps in front of the mirror with the words “ready 4 da beatz 2mrw”. Why God, why.

STRANGE FESTIVALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD I’ve never heard someone say , “Pretty over music festivals. All those amazing ar tists, getting dr unk with my friends, dancing…not for me.” Maybe I’ll sound more “phat” and “jiggy with it ” if I w rite it as “Pretty over music f estivals SAI D NO-ONE EVER!” Either way, if you’re reading this, I assume you love music festivals, or maybe you just have a strong passion for m usic festival guides, but what about non-music festivals? You know, like…
GOOSE PULLING FESTIVAL Look, we all love pulling the occasional goose, but a whole festival dedicated to it is insane . Each year in many towns thr oughout Germany, the N etherlands and Belgium, a dead goose is hung f rom a wir e and competitors take turns r unning past it on horseback, trying to tear its head off. The tradition dates bac k to the 17 th century, when real geese were used, before “rules” and “regulations” and “basic morality”.
THE SUMMER REDNECK GAMES Held in D ublin, Georgia in the United S tates, the S ummer Redneck Games began as a r eaction to an insult. In 1996, when the Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, the inter national media labelled the e vent as a “bunch of r ednecks holding a sporting event.” The locals, who w ere deeply offended, strangely reacted by actually forming the S ummer Redneck Games. From toilet seat thr owing to hubc ap hurling and the ar mpit serenade, the Games actually donate all the money to charity. The website describes it best: “In essence, it’s like a grandiose bake sale — only with butt cracks and hubcaps instead of brownies and pie.”

MOOSE DROPPING FESTIVAL The Moose Dropping Festival is a two-day celebration held each July in Talkeetna, Alaska – population 850. Apart from staring at Russia from your house, there’s not much to do in Alaska, so in July 1972 some local lads decided to mix their passion for moose and sport into one. Basically, thousands of moose dr oppings are collected and numbered, and then taken into the sky via helium balloon and dropped on a target. Whichever piece of moose shit lands closest to the target wins. That has to be the most ridiculous sentence I’ve ever typed.

KONAKI SUMO I went to Japan once. I saw an old man walking a ferr et on a leash and nobody batted an ey e. A group of transvestites shot fireworks at me from a gun while leaning out of their conv ertible on a Tuesday morning. It’s a strange place, and I thought I had seen it al l. But I never attended the Konaki Sumo, held in the Sensoji Temple in Tokyo each April. It’s basically normal sumo, except instead of actually wrestling, the wrestlers hold babies and try make them cry. Whoever’s baby cries first, wins. If both babies start crying at the same time, the loudest one wins. The tradition is 400 y ears old, and it ’s believed that the cr ying scares evil spirits away. It seems like y ou can get away with anything if it’s ‘tradition’. “Dude, transvestites have been shooting fireworks from convertibles for centuries. It’s good luck to be shot at.”
EL COLACHO Probably the most disturbing festival listed here, and that’s sort of saying something, El Colacho is famously known as the baby jumping festival. To celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi in the Spanish village of Castrillo de Murcia, since 1620, every baby born in the previous year is placed on a mattress in the street while all the adult men of the village dress up as the Devil and take turns jumping over them. It’s apparently supposed to clean away sin from the baby. The Catholic Church has asked the priests of the village to distance themselves from the festival, because you know, dumping a naked, crying baby in water is a much more sane way of spiritual cleansing.

MUSIC FESTIVALS IN FILM & TELEVISION There have been some legendary documentaries about real life music festivals, such as Gimme Shelter in 1970, which follows The Rolling Stones on the end of their 1969 tour, culminating in the infamous Altamont Speedway Free Festival where several people died, cars were stolen, property was damaged and apparently four births even occurred. While there are many brilliant music festival documentaries, festivals are often portrayed in film and television. Here are some of the best.
PEEP SHOW – “JEREMY’S MANAGER” British sitcom Peep Show follows two friends in their late twenties/ early thirties living in a flat together. Unlike Mark, who is played by David Mitchell, Jez (Rober t Webb) is unemplo yed, and a struggling musician. In “Jeremy’s Manager”, Jez gets a manager , Cally, who books them to play a Christian rock festival. CALLY: I’ve got you on the bill at Lif e 08 – one of the f astest growing Christian rock festivals out. JEZ: Christian? You’ve booked us to play a Jesus fest? CALLY: It’s a great circuit to get on. SUPER HANS: It is still a fest. JEZ: Yeah but we’re cool. We’ve got credibility. If we play a Jesus gig, we’ll be selling our souls. SUPER HANS: Yeah but Jesus is the best person to sell your soul to. That’s his whole set up.
SOUTH PARK – “CHEF AID” After Chef finds out that Alana Mor issette’s song Stinky Britches was plagiarised f rom him, he asks the r ecord label to simpl y credit his name. After they refuse, Chef takes them cour t, but in a lampoon of the O .J. Simpson trial, the jur y is confused b y the def endant’s closing argument and the judge instead awar ds the record label $2 million. Chef reverts to becoming a gigolo to raise money (raising $400,000 in onl y a few days) but the S outh Park boys put on a music festival featuring Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Primus and more to help pay for the lawsuit. JOHNNY COCHRAN: Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, Chef ’s attorney would certainly want you to believe that his client wrote Stinky Britches ten years ago. And they make a good case. Hell, I almost felt pit y myself ! But, ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jur y, I have one final thing I want y ou to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a wookie f rom the planet K ashyyyk. But Che wbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about that, that does not make sense! GERALD: Dammit! CHEF: What? From now on, no cannonballs, no spicy foods and when you lie in a hammock, please rest your beer on your head or your genitals. HOMER: Pfft. Rules. I’m a rocker! I don’t care for rules.
