Slipknot stand out as one of history’s most impactful and culturally significant hard rock entities. Since first landing in 1999, the group has garnered 11 platinum and 38 gold record certifications worldwide. They’ve covered magazines ranging from Rolling Stone and Revolver to Guitar World and Billboard. Earned a GRAMMY Award for “Best Metal Performance” as well as numerous accolades from Kerrang!, Revolver Golden Gods, NME, Metal Hammer Golden Gods, and more. Live, they’ve decimated stages everywhere from Rock In Rio to Soundwave.

supported by fellow Grammy Award-winning hard rock luminaries Korn and the year’s breakout act KING 810. On top of that, the bands latest offering .5 : The Gray Chapter debuted at #1 in Australia and is the band’s second consecutive #1 ARIA debut (following All Hope Is Gone in 2008). It is now certified GOLD in Australia. Soundwave Festival 2015 will be the band’s first shows in support of .5 : the Gray Chapter in Australia.

2014 has proven to be one of the biggest years in Slipknot history though. They ignited one of their most ferocious arena tours yet,

Q&A from Roddy Bottum. If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Omniscience If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? I am a superhero. I wear suits, sometimes ponchos. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I have an Ostrich egg wrapped in leather bondage straps. I found it at an outsider art fair. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? A little bit goth, but old goth. Probably a little dated like the first Adam and the Ants record, Dirk Wears White Socks, not Antmusic. On tour, which of your band members is the most embarrassing to eat out in public with?

18

We are all very well mannered. None of us have tattoos and we are as comfortable eating in a mall as we are eating with the Royal Family. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? I’d name it Lil Aussie and it’d be a free, clothing optional holiday spot for low income families. Water park, karaoke bar, merry go round, a performance space, run by people in drag. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? I’m not that interested in collaborating, I’m looking more for an assistant and a pilot. Wonder Woman. Her plane is big enough for me, some friends and she seems to be really no nonsense. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Uncontrollable Urge by Devo.

Q&A from Kim Thayil. If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Omnipotence If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? God. No wait, Jehovah #1. Yeah, that sounds cooler. And the outfit would look like everything. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? My relationship with my girlfriend, and God only knows. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? The Birthday Party or Bauhaus. On tour, which of your band members is the most embarrassing to eat out in public with? Probably me. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for?

20

The Soundgarden. I would use it for a sanctuary for endangered wildlife and vegetation. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? Batman, because he would probably write cool songs like The Birthday Party and Bauhaus. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? The Doom Patrol, The Metal Men or the Fantastic Four. These are obviously great names for a rock band and most of the other superhero groups have too many members. Which song motivated you to pursue music? There are too many to name here, but if I had to pick one or two it would be Day Tripper by The Beatles and Rock n Roll All Night by KISS. Describe your most regrettable haircut. I regret any haircut I’ve had.

The Smashing Pumpkins have created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history. Fronted by Billy Corgan, a man considered by many as one of the best guitarists to emerge from the alternative rock scene, their music defined a generation.

The Smashing Pumpkins are appearing at Soundwave in support of their latest album Monuments To An Elegy, a release that’s seen by many as Corgan’s best work in some time.

Having sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and winning multiple Grammy Awards in the process, the group’s place in rock and roll history is indisputable. Seminal releases such as Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Siamese Dream are revered as seminal classics and still hold relevance in the modern rock and roll vernacular.

SLASH

FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS

Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Slash creates music that is full throttle and in your face. Coming to fruition as the lead guitarist for seminal 90s rock and roll outfit Guns ‘N’ Roses, Slash built a reputation as a modern day master of guitar shredding. He’s amassed album sales of over 100 million copies with seven Grammy nominations, one Grammy Award and countless other accolades, Slash is truly a giant of Rock and Roll. Slash, accompanied by vocalist Myles Kennedy, bassist Todd Kerns and drummer Brent Fitz has just released World On Fire. This latest album comes hot on the heels of the success of Apocalyptic Love, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and produced Slash’s first-ever No. 1 U.S. Rock radio solo hits in You’re a Lie and Standing in the Sun.

MARILYN MANSON Over time, Marilyn Manson has cultivated a tumultuous relationship with the public. His genre-defying music and the dark and sinister imagery associated with him has resulted in sold-out tours, protests, legal battles, adoration, love, hate, more than 50 million record sales, Grammy nominations and a slew of powerful and enduring singles. Songs like The Dope Show, I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me) and Lunchbox were as shocking at the time of their release as they were popular, and cemented Marilyn Manson’s place in rock and roll history as one of the most divisive and haunting figures. Marilyn Manson’s currently touring on the back of his latest release The Pale Emperor. Receiving widespread critical acclaim, this is an album that is every bit as brutal and punishing as his earliest work.

FALL OUT BOY If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I’d go with something useless like the power to instantly make food 3/4 its original size...just for the comedy of trying to join the X-Men with a power like that. “We’re all set for the lunch reduction powers. Don’t call us, we’ll call you...” If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Going off the above useless power, I’d be Portion Controller and my costume would be that oversized suit David Byrne wore in the 80’s. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? My wife and I just had a baby. He’s pretty interesting. I’d rather not explain how he got there. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? If Batman were in the band I’d want him to sing and we’d only do cover ballads. So then it’s just that gurgling Batman voice slurring the Carpenters “Close To You.” If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? I’d call it Snuggle Adorable Chipmunk Island and it would be full of rabid panthers and super-venomous snakes. No chipmunks. The chipmunks are all dead. The panthers and snakes got them all. Obviously. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? I’d love to record an album with Banshee from the X-Men, just because I imagine that would be pretty difficult and I like a challenge.

26

Q&A from Patrick Stump

Which song motivated you to pursue music? My dad was a folk singer and used to play a lot of different kinds of music. It’s hard to say just one but I’ll arbitrarily pick Steve Goodman’s City of New Orleans. Describe your most regrettable haircut. I dyed it green with Kool Aid one time. For those trivia fans out there, Kool Aid is not actually meant to be hair dye. Ever.

STEEL PANTHER Steel Panther are about as important to Glam Metal as any other band. Their cheekiness paired with their attitude ridden riffs have earned them a reputation as one of the most outrageous live acts in the genre. Steel Panther’s latest release All You Can Eat fits this rock ‘n’ roll opus perfectly. There are plenty of badass riffs, arena-size grooves, lyrics about sex, drugs, and senior citizens, and the lingering scent of whisky, a stripper’s perfume and hairspray. The band doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon either. As they’ve said themselves “our drive to bring heavy metal back has not lessened, it’s actually gotten stronger. We’re not going to stop. I look forward to our continued world domination.”

INCUBUS Q&A with Brandon Boyd If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I’ve given this much thought over the years and I’ve concluded that besides having the ability to fly, be invisible, be able to breathe underwater and shape shift, I would most of all enjoy it if whenever I farted, anyone within a 20 foot radius (of consenting age of course) would have an orgasm. On tour, which of your band members is the most embarrassing to eat out in public with? I’m probably the most embarrassing as I ask for gluten free food. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? Oooooh! What on earth did I do to deserve that?! I’d call it ‘the Island of Dr Boyd’ or maybe ‘Orgasmia’. I’d use it for pseudoscientific experimentations based on looking for ways to make farts induce orgasms. We’d weaponize of course, and create a world where Mexican food was both feared and highly revered. Or...maybe I’d just surf a lot. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? I love these questions. I’d like to collaborate with Wonder Woman. I don’t need to say why.

28

Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? I feel like an all female superhero supergroup would be amazing. I’d buy their album.

JUDAS PRIEST There are few heavy metal bands that have managed to scale the heights that Judas Priest have during their nearly 40 year career. Their presence and influence remains at an all-time high as evidenced by their most recent album Redeemer of Souls being the highest-charting album of their career. Originally forming in the early 70’s in Birmingham, England, an area that’s seen by many as the birthplace of heavy metal, Judas Priest is widely considered to be true visionaries of heavy music. Their career is littered with albums that are understood as classics of the genre that span everything from straight up rock and roll to faster and more brutal heavy metal. It’s this diversity and their unwillingness to let up that’s lead them to be regarded this highly. Few other acts can boast a career that’s spanned four decades and never really seen a lull. That’s something truly unique.

MILLENCOLIN Scandinavian skatepunk unit Millencolin formed in Örebro, Sweden, in late 1992 with its members coming together from other punk bands. Inspired by the Southern California hardcore sound of bands like Operation Ivy, the Descendents, and NOFX, vocalist/bassist Nikola Sarcevic, guitarists Erik Ohlsson and Mathias Färm formed the first incarnation of Millencolin. It was in 2000 that the band released their fourth LP Pennybridge Pioneers which took the group from being a knock about Scandinavian punk band to an internationally renowned outfit. Millencolin have never lost their cheeky skater attitude, and that’s part of the reason they are still such a crowd favourite at festivals all over the world.

ALL TIME LOW From the Saves The Day-esque pop-punk jams populating 2007’s So Wrong, It’s Right, to the upbeat rockers on 2009’s Nothing Personal, and the eclectic and ecstatic pop of 2011’s Dirty Work, All Time Low have always been very open with their musical influences. Though, when it came time to make their fifth album, Don’t Panic, the band decided to look inward for inspiration, focusing on the best aspects of their past releases.Indeed, Don’t Panic brims with the type of energetic, hook-filled songs the band’s fans have always gravitated toward. Now and as always, what keeps All Time Low moving forward are their dedicated fans, the ones who have championed the group through thick and thin. “We’re not going anywhere,” Barakat says. “We’re going to keep releasing music our fans love and we’re going to keep touring. We’ve always been the same four dudes who’ve been releasing music non-stop. This is our music. We’re here to stay.”

LAMB OF GOD There are metal bands and then there is Lamb Of God. They are the architects of modern American metal, and it is against their blueprint that all bands that have come after them are measured. Irrefutably, they changed the genre. With a rich history that includes three Grammy nominations, an invitation to tour with Metallica and debuts in the Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 there’s no question that Lamb Of God rule the metal roost. Everyone else is left to watch and marvel, and choke on their dust. They’re not resting on past successes or what they’ve done, though. There’s a whole host of reasons that Lamb Of God remain at the top of their game in 2014, while others have faded and fallen away. Resolution is evidence of the band’s stronghold on heavy metal.

MINISTRY From the schizophrenic opening cut, the sarcasm-dripping, sound effect-laden Hail to his Majesty to the thrash-punk riffs and booming bass reverberations of Punch in the Face, Ministry’s new record From Beer to Eternity pulls no punches, sounding at once familiar, yet completely fresh and inspired. Like much of Ministry’s catalog, From Beer To Eternity, takes on greed, hypocrisy, capitalism, and conservatism through barbed lyrics and immaculately placed samples that earned Jourgensen the title godfather of industrial metal. While many of the songs are biting and thoroughly provoking, others are sneering and sardonic. From Beer To Eternity is Ministry’s thirteenth studio album in their twenty seven year career and further evidence that Ministry are stalwarts of the Industrial Metal genre.

FALLING IN REVERSE Falling In Reverse has managed the unthinkable. Already blessed with a Top 20 debut album, fervently passionate fans and positioned firmly atop the world of the Vans Warped Tour, Alternative Press magazine’s 2012 “Artist of the Year” could have rested on their accomplishments. Still, what have they chosen as an encore? Nothing short of conquering the world. Not many get to climb the mountain once, let alone twice. His first band’s first album brought him notoriety in the underground; Radke’s comeback with Falling In Reverse blew down the doors. Now, together with his close friends in his band, Ronnie Radke is about to climb new heights of achievement, stepping right into the eye of the post-modern/ pop-cultural hurricane with all of his angst, humor, confidence, selfexamination, wide smile and rad hairstyle intact.

GODSMACK

Q&A from Sully Erna

What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? This strange girl that keeps washing my clothes for food. She says I pulled her out of a homeless shelter one night when I was drinking and complaining about not having a maid. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? I would name it ScullRock Island. And I would use it to grow avocados and make wine and romance women! Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why?I would collaborate with The Hulk, and I would write a song about punching you in the face for asking me what superhero I would collaborate with. Which song motivated you to pursue music? I was 3 years old when I started playing music. But if there was one, I’m sure it was a song my dad’s band was playing in my basement when I use to sit there and watch them practice all night.

KILLER BE KILLED

Q&A from Greg Puciato.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Teleportation. If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? I would be called Terminavid Lee Roth and I would look like the machine version of the terminator except I would do crazy high kicks and shit. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? Well I recently had every single thing I own stolen so right now the most interesting things I own, and the only things I own, are the few items of clothing I’ve bought in the last couple of weeks. On tour, which of your band members is the most embarrassing to eat out in public with? I don’t eat any of my band members out in public. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? Nicki Minaj because that ass. And you spelled fornicate wrong.

42

SOUNDWAVEFESTIVAL.COM

EXODUS

Q&A from Tom Hunting

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? To fly at lightning speed so I can teleport myself to places. To Australia for one, so I don’t have to fly sixteen hours. Not that I’m complaining! If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? I’d be Soul-Man Karaoke Singer Extraordinaire. People would be sucking at karaoke at a bar and I would swoop in and sing, like, Roll Royce and Hall and Oates music and I’d just crush everybody. And I wouldn’t be wearing tights. Probably something from the ‘70s. Maybe some checkered pants, maybe a brim hat? What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? We have a lot of Christmas stuff in this house. We have a giant sit-down deer. It came from a display because we used to do a Christmas program for kids. We got all kinds of interesting stuff here. A 6 foot stuffed moose; we have a 5 foot bear with a Hawaiian shirt and a camera. I got a couple rifles in the house. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? It would be like a surf-punk metal band. Whenever you say the word Batman, because I’m older I think of the ‘60s series.

NEW FOUND GLORY For New Found Glory, it’s eternally important to remember why they do what they do. The band has been playing together since the musicians were only in high school, breaking out of Florida to become one of the most influential pop-punk bands of our time. The group has headlined Warped Tour, toured with Green Day and performed on the main stage of festivals like Reading and Leeds, their songs connecting positively and universally with fans around the world. Their message of encouragement continually resonates: never settle for what life has dealt you because you can do better. It’s that passion and optimism that has kept New Found Glory together for all these years and all these albums and all these tours.

TONIGHT ALIVE Off the back of the release of the ARIA top 5 album The Other Side, Tonight Alive have been consistently touring the globe for the past 12 months, culminating in sold out shows across Europe and a Main stage slot at the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK. 2014 saw them release the epic track The Edge taken from The Amazing Spiderman 2, Rise Of Electro Soundtrack. In the midst of their relentless touring, Tonight Alive have been busy writing their third full length album and will be premiering new material at Soundwave 2015.

GERARD WAY Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has this year released his debut solo album, entitled Hesitant Alien. Working with producer Doug McKean, Way knew immediately what he wanted Hesitant Alien to sound like. It’s a far cry from the tone of My Chemical Romance, and by Way’s own admission, he’s taken influence from different areas of music purposely for this project. Hesitant Alien references Britpop and Shoegaze more than it does My Chemical Romance, still, it’s unmistakably Way.

THE VANDALS Orange County punk veterans The Vandals trace their roots back to the earliest days of their local scene, but didn’t really make much of an impact as a recording artists until the 90’s. By that time, their snide, terminally juvenile humour had done a great deal to set the tone of Orange County’s thriving punk and ska scene. With 11 full length studio albums in the rear view mirror, The Vandals have been taking it easy lately, selecting only the “most fun” occasions to play. With the same 4 guys playing together for over 25 years, that’s what it is, just good fun!

LAGWAGON Santa Barbara’s pride and joy, Lagwagon have been belting ‘em out since 1988. Their catchy brand of punk is an infectious blend of pop and hardcore and lyrically tackles an array of personal politics. This punk quintet has secured a massive following worldwide with their solid, tonal attack and hectic touring schedule. With over a million records sold (and all independently, pal!), it’s impossible to deny Lagwagon’s greatness.

FEAR FACTORY

Q&A from Burton C Bell

If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? The Arranger. I would wear a black suit and tie. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? Me. I moved in. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? Bell Island. I would use it for long vacations as a nudist colony. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? Wonder Woman and Storm because they are super sexy. Who cares what they sound like. Describe your most regrettable haircut. A mullet I had in high school.

ANTEMASQUE Although they’re only a relatively new project, Antemasque already look like they’re filled with promise. It’s the latest musical effort of Omar Rodriquez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, both of At The Drive in and The Mars Volta fame. Really, not much else needs to be said about them. Their debut release is less than six months old and hasn’t had enough time to seep into the rock and roll consciousness, but it promises to be a musical project that’s every bit as invigorating and challenging as their previous efforts.

PAPA ROACH Over the course of almost two decades, Papa Roach have released an impressively diverse string of gold, platinum and multi-platinum records. The only thing those songs have in common? A refusal to stay put and play it safe. Since their meteoric rise to prominence with their debut album Infest the band has spanned the genres and explored nu metal as well as harder and faster more progressive sounds. “I love what we have with our audience,” says Shaddix. “Papa Roach is four people who come together to make this bigger thing, and our fans become a part of that. It just gets bigger, and then it goes around the world. The connection music makes – it’s fucking magical.”

OF MICE & MEN Strength often comes from starting over. In the aftermath of a disruption, calamity, or tragedy, there’s a process of restoration. Southern California quintet Of Mice & Men refer to it as Restoring Force. Not only does that serve as the title for the group’s third full-length album for Rise Records and follow-up to 2011 breakout The Flood, but it also sums up their unbreakable spirit. Despite numerous line-up changes, the band are strong, and here to stay.

DRAGONFORCE

Q&A from Frédéric Leclercq

If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Not easy! I’d go probably for SuperFrench, and wear what people think we wear all the time in France (stripy T-shirt, beret, moustache and a string of onions around our necks, usually on a bicycle) with a Garlic & Camembert baguette as a weapon. Cliché enough? If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? Bonzer Island, and I wouldn’t go there ‘cos I’d be too scared of the spiders and snakes and sharks! Which song motivated you to pursue music? Hard to pick just ONE song, or even ONE band, but let’s see…Maybe Motley Crue’s Home Sweet Home. In the video they had pretty ladies in the crowd and I was like “I wish I could be on stage one day and experience that!” Describe your most regrettable haircut. I had a mullet when I was 13. I looked like a German soccer player.

ESCAPE THE FATE While Escape The Fate came close to having the kind of VH1/ Behind The Music-style flame-out that’s indicative of many careers these days, the band woke up and jammed each other’s faces into the grindstone, taking the most ambitious album of their career and breathing new life into it with an unmatched live presentation. There is a renewed brotherhood and spark in the band. The band’s new album, Ungrateful, the 11 tracks show a creative arc the band hadn’t dared to navigate on their previous releases. While lesser bands undermine themselves with the too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen mentality when using multiple producers, Escape The Fate have delivered a remarkably cohesive record that’s not only contemporary, but offers the same kind of immediacy that is the lifeblood of the entire history of rock music.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA The Devil Wears Prada is the musical embodiment of a generational shift. Built on a diverse array of heavy, dark, melodic and genredefying music, The Devil Wears Prada is at the forefront of a movement that bridges the gap between Rockstar Mayhem and the Vans Warped Tour. They are unwavering in their commitment to each other, their fans, their art, their higher calling toward truth and to their desire to engage. The emotion remains sincere, the musicianship supreme.

GODFLESH Godflesh, comprised of legendary talents Justin Broadrick (also of Jesu, JK Flesh, Techno Animal, Pale Sketcher, and more) and GC Green, formed in 1988 in the same fertile Birmingham scene that forged the talents of Napalm Death, Carcass and Head of David. Initially disbanding in 2002, the band resumed live performances in 2010 and began the arduous work of crafting a follow up to 2001’s Hymns. The resulting self-recorded ten song set mounts the thin line between high definition clarity and raw, visceral heaviness, inducing a meditative state via seething minimalism that hinges on ritualistic riff repetition and the tenuous membrane between anxiety-inducing dissonance and cathartic minor key melody.

THE AQUABATS The Aquabats are an American rock band formed in Orange County, California in 1994. They’re comprised of singer and fearless leader The M.C. Bat Commander, bass player and big man Crash McLarson, keyboardist and robot Jimmy the Robot, drummer and fitness guru Ricky Fitness and guitarist and spiritualist Eagle ‘Bones’ Falconhawk. Easily identified by their silver helmets, black Zorro masks and matching blue costumes, The Aquabats claim to be crime-fighting superheroes and ‘seriously…the best band in the world.’

THE WONDER YEARS

Q&A from Dan ‘Soupy’ Campbell

What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? Until recently, it was a life-sized cut out of Will Smith that we got at a yard sale. I recently donated it to Ace of Early November fame for his studio. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? I feel like Rouge from X-Men would have a cool singing voice. She has a sweet sounding southern thing happening that could be perfect for a soft song ala our use of the talented Laura Stevenson on The Devil In My Bloodstream. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? I’m not sure who would be the backing band but I think Nightcrawler singing could be cool, he’s such a sad tragic figure. His lyrics would probably make early Bright Eyes records sound optimistic. I also think Rorschach would front a tight political power violence band.

AREA 7 It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years. Area-7 are by far Australia’s most successful Punk/Ska band. Their career over the last two decades has seen some amazing highlights. They’ve hit the main stage of all the major festivals of their time, being a major player for festivals like Vans Warped Tour, Pushover, Big Day Out, Offshore, Falls Festival, Homebake and many more. They’ve earned a reputation as one of Australia’s hardest working bands, touring the length and breadth of the country dozens of times. So in their 21st year the Area-7 boys are back with vengeance for Soundwave 2015.

TWIN ATLANTIC If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I’d love to be able to communicate with all individual species of animal. I can’t imagine anything better than being able to hear how to make the world work better for every living thing straight from the horse’s mouth. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I have a 1940’s war time working Wills’s Gold Flake cigarette machine. It belonged to a sculptor friend of my dads who kept it loaded with packets of John Player up until he died. It’s nice to have that memory around all the time. Describe your most regrettable haircut. I never regret the past. The world keeps moving regardless of your actions and I don’t want to be left behind. Every haircut I’ve ever had has led me to Soundwave 2015.

MAYHEM Mayhem are the single most notorious and important band in the history of black metal. With the band’s four revolutionary full-lengths, a legacy of boundless extremity, and an ethic rooted firmly in the principle of no compromise, Mayhem are the archetype that three generations of black metal bands follow as law. After a 30 year history involving suicide, murder and accusations of church burnings, Mayhem remain kings of the underground and one of the most controversial bands in music history.

APOCALYPTICA Since their inception in 1993, Apocalyptica have been mining classical form and structure, constantly coming up with unpredictable new musical projects. Twenty-one years into an inimitable global career exceeding well over 1000 live concerts, performed in over 50 countries, they are still reinventing themselves.

LOWER THAN ATLANTIS Lower Than Atlantis positively fizzes with musical ambition, lyrical wit, crossover potential and carpe diem spirit. From the us-againstthe-world bravado of English Kids In America to the reflective closer Number One, Lower Than Atlantis is the sound of a band determined to give everything they’ve got in search of glory. The band unflinchingly documents their unhappy experiences, both professional and personal, but in a way that anyone and everyone will relate to.

BAYSIDE

Q&A from Anthony Raneri.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Definitely time travel. I would be able to see outcomes different decisions would have. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I have a lot of art on the walls in the house and I have a painting of a Storm Trooper with Rod Stewart’s head. I got it from an awesome artist named Brandon Bird. It’s usually the piece of art that grabs people’s attention. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Since I was 3 years old or so I always knew that music was having a bigger affect on me than the kids around me. It always gave me chills. I think when the Nirvana Nevermind record came out was when I really knew that that was something I wanted to do. I think bands like Nirvana and eventually Weezer and Green Day showed me that anyone could play cool music.

NOTHING MORE

Q&A from Daniel Oliver.

What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? The supercharger from a locomotive. My roommate is an engineer and his company was throwing it away. It weighs 500 lbs and is the size of a 55 gallon barrel. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? I think it would be cheesy surf music like the original Batman theme song. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? Danland. I would build race tracks of all sorts all over it. Free admission if you can find the island. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? I think the Ninja Turtles would make a great punk band. They’re underground, live a subversive lifestyle, and are always jamming.

FUCKED UP Fucked Up are a punk band. They were a punk band when they started in Toronto more than a decade ago, and they’ve remained a punk band even as they’ve ascended to career heights that their younger selves never could’ve imagined. But how do you remain a punk band when you’re on magazine covers, or sharing stadium stages with the Foo Fighters? How do you stay true to your 15-yearold self when you’ve got a career to maintain, and families to support? Those are the questions that Fucked Up ask on Glass Boys, and they ask those questions in the form of a blazing, titanic, ultimately triumphant rock album. After two monumental concept-driven albums, Fucked Up have made another heart-expanding, life-affirming piece of work, and this time, they’ve done it by shooting straight from the heart.

HE IS LEGEND Impulsive is a word that comes to mind when thinking about He Is Legend. Their sound is best described as rock and roll, although it can be difficult to predict what direction their next album might take. Refusing to be pigeon holed into one sub genre, they choose to write songs that can be unique and polar opposites of each other, but still assuring you that you’re listening to He Is Legend. Pulling influences from bands like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins, they’ve crafted a uniquely aggressive and faster sound.

NONPOINT

Q&A from Elias Soriano

What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? My daughter. She baffles me sometimes and you and I both know how she got here. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? Batman, because he always wears black and that’s metal. That and we’d have the pimp tour bus. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? Flash on Drums (his double bass drum would be sick), Superman on Rhythm Guitar (cause his right hand speed would be unmatched), Thor on lead guitar (He’s got the hair), Spawn on Bass (cause he’s the only superhero with any rhythm) and The Hulk on vocals (forgot to mention this would be a death metal supergroup).

CROSSFAITH

Q&A from Ken Koie

If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Metal Samurai! The outfit is looks like in between Samurai and Ninja and his weapon is not a sword or a throwing knife. His special weapon is Metal Microphone! Make my voice louder and make it distorted. If I scream through that mic, your ears and brain are going to explode. So I cannot be Metal Samurai on the stage. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? Independent State Ken aka ISK! I’m gonna make a country, a new language and new laws. Build a ton of nightclubs and venues. Use it to party! I’m going to ask Jagermeister to be the official sponsor for my new country!

FIREWORKS

Q&A with Kyle O’neil

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Time travel. That would be so rad. If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Sex Guy, and my outfit would consist of a tuxedo thong. If you were awarded a small island off the coast of Australia, what would you name it and what would you use it for? I’d name it “Austria Island” and I’d use it to confuse people. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? The Demon, the Starbearer, the King of Beasts and the Celestial. I think those are the most musically inclined super heroes. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Taking Care of Business by Bachman-Turner Overdrive

CROWN THE EMPIRE It’s true, a picture does paint a thousand words, even if the artist uses sound rather than pigment and pencil. For the Dallas-based outfit Crown The Empire that means making music on a level rarely seen nowadays, combining visual aesthetics, theatrical sonic textures and thoughtprovoking lyrics. And they’re just getting started. Armed with The Fallout, the band’s recent fulllength debut, Crown The Empire are bringing a high-energy, visually stimulating and thematically engaging side to post-hardcore. Set amid a charred post-apocalyptic landscape, listening to The Fallout is an unforgettable excursion into the imaginations of its makers.

ICON FOR HIRE

Q&A from Adam Kronshagen.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I would possess the ability to resist candy since this seems to be almost impossible for me. Put some smarties in front of me, and the rest of the world shrinks in comparison. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I own a scarf from Ariel’s Uncle’s friend from Bali whom I met in Sweden. I refuse to wash it due to the fact that he had the most amazing cologne I’ve ever smelled. This may seem weird, but it’s true. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? Easy: Death Metal. Why? Because a) He “naturally” has a deep voice and b) He’s always trying to show off how tough he is, even if no one is really buying it.

BUTCHER BABIES Hailing from the City Of Angels, Butcher Babies offer redemption from the overplayed underground, exorcising internal demons with a visceral sound matched only in scope by their explosive stage show. Frontwomen Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey, guitarist Henry Flury, bassist Jason Klein and drummer Chris Warner juxtapose brutal, aggressive riffs with beautiful melodies that wail with anguish and a shattering stand for the message at hand. The five piece began their unstoppable journey in late 2009 with one thing in mind, to take back the artist control of the cookie cutter, lackluster music business driven by men in suits. After years of the bands relentless grind, world tours, humble determination and a ferocious debut album, Butcher Babies are seemingly an unrestrained force to be reckoned with.

EMILY’S ARMY Emerging from an eclectic combination of their beachy outlook, diverse adoration of music, and their east bay ethos, Emily’s Army is influenced by almost everyone. The group began in the early 2000’s when young brothers Max and Cole Becker started a band with their everlasting best friend Joey Armstrong to play the kind of music they heard in the movie School of Rock. Since then the boys have been playing donut shops, bowling alleys, and fetid dive clubs across the world playing their music for anyone who will listen.

THE INTERRUPTERS An L.A.-based four-piece bound by their rebel spirit and deep love of 2 Tone, The Interrupters make super-high-energy ska-punk that’s equal parts catchy and confrontational. After teaming up with Armstrong, whom Kevin got to know while taking over as touring keyboard player for The Transplants in 2005, The Interrupters wrote and recorded all of their debut in a matter of days. Proof of the band’s fiery chemistry, the result is a frenetic free-for-all that tosses out anthem after anthem. Having toured with Rancid in 2013, along with regularly playing with Armstrong as Tim Timebomb and Friends, The Interrupters have built their live act on unstoppable energy and a feeling of easy community that reflects their familial vibe.

KING 810 King 810’s debut LP, Memoirs of a Murderer is a memoir of the life of frontman David Gunn set to the backdrop of Flint, MI. Cut to a crackling old tape recorder, Gunn’s narrative eclipses three distinct movements, traveling from a very real place down a rabbit hole into the abstract. The three movements align with Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality, in which the three elements of personality - known as the id, the ego and the superego - work together to create complex human behaviors. Whether shootings at nine-years-old or knife fights as a pre-teen, the first act of Memoirs of a Murderer captures the violence that plagues the streets of Flint. These are David Gunn’s Memoirs, chilling and starkly poetic, introspective and brutally honest. Keep this in mind as you listen to these tapes.

MONUMENTS Transcontinental metallers Monuments have come a long way since starting as a side project of John Browne (guitars; Fellsilent) and Josh Travis (guitars; The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza). From a surprise appearance on BBC Radio 1 to debut full-length, Gnosis, the group immediately found a fanatic audience. Praised for their brainy yet song-oriented approach to heavy music, Monuments bridged the progressive metal gap like few before. On one side they challenged. Gnosis was full of mind-bending, betcha-can’t-play-this-type passages. On the other side, fans deeply connected to hook-laden songs like 97% Static and Empty Vessels. Fast forward two productive years later and Monuments, now with Chris Barretto (ex-Periphery, Ever Forthright) on vocals, have grown tremendously. While they’re still way into instrumental gymnastics and impressing fans with their musical prowess, they’ve really honed in on writing huge, impossibly memorable songs.

Q&A from Todd Hansen.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? Some kind of laser thing that shot out my dick. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? The Chuck Norris Total Gym! It’s amazing! My girlfriend owns it! If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? It’d probably be pretty good. I’d say he’d be a tuba player in an orchestra just playing dramatic music. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? Probably Spiderman. If the rumours are true and he can shoot web out of his dick, we could be the dynamic dick duo! Describe your most regrettable haircut. One time I shaved off all my pubes. It was fine for a day or so, but when they started growing back it was so damn itchy and prickly. Never again!

My superhero struggles from split personality disorder…you never know if he is saving the world or ending it. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? CONFESSION Fronted by Michael Crafter, a key player in the hardcore scene who earned his stripes as founding member of I Killed The Prom Queen, Confession have become one of the most well-known bands in the Australian hardcore scene. Their newest release, Life And Death is a sonic journey through the last 2 years of Crafter’s life; a political yet incredibly personal account, working through the multi-faceted issues that come with births, deaths, illnesses, friendships and love.

SLEEPWAVE Sleepwave cuts through the white noise of sound-a-like charlatans like a dull knife. Broken Compass, the Florida based band’s debut album, speaks truth to power by bucking trends and digging deeply with a creative determination all too lacking today. A Sleepwave show is full of spit, snot, bile and vibrant redemption, performed by the core duo of Spencer Chamberlain and Stephen Bowman (and various live collaborators) with purpose and meaning. Compared to the cameraready prima donnas around them, these guys look like they slept in a gas station and they sound like the pop apocalypse.

COLDRAIN

Q&A from Masato.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I would be able to absorb what ever power the enemy has and use it against them. If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? I’d be Mighty Masato, with a big M on my forehead and tights of course. Superheroes should be dorky and cool at the same time. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? X-MEN with Storm as the singer. I have no idea why. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Nookie by Limp Bizkit was what made me want to be in a band. It was all about what seemed cool at the time. I just wanted to bang my head.

LE BUTCHERETTES The garage-punk trio Le Butcherettes are like the brilliant offspring of surrealist Luis Bunuel and intrepid rock icon PJ Harvey. Led by 24-year-old vocalist/guitarist/pianist Teri Gender Bender (a recent transplant to L.A. from Guadalajara, Mexico) Le Butcherettes bring a brazen intensity and playful, hook-laden simplicity that hacks to pieces all forms of pretension and excess. The band’s songs and wildly cathartic live shows have often drawn comparisons to Karen-O, Patti Smith, Bikini Kill and many other female-fronted rock groups, but there’s a theatricality to Le Butcherettes that brings a further reaching sense of mystery and imagery to the band.

PATENT PENDING

Q&A from Joe Ragosta.

What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I have a framed picture of a weird moment in time when Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day (my all-time hero) peed on my foot during a Foxboro Hot Tubs show. It’s a long story. It’s a true story. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? Michelangelo from Ninja Turtles. That dude gets me. Which song motivated you to pursue music? If I had to pin-point one specific song that got me going I’d say it’s DammIt by Blink 182. It’s the first song I ever learned how to play on guitar. That was the song that opened up the door to musical performance for me. Describe your most regrettable haircut. I think it was my really long/shaggy “scene” haircut that I had back in 2010. It was tragic stuff, really, just awful looking. 2010 was a tough year in fashion for all of us.

DAYSHELL Personal revelations don’t come easily. Once you do really know yourself though, anything is possible. Shayley ‘Dayshell’ Bourget realized he needed to make a big change in his life before he could truly be happy. In 2012, after three years and two seminal records playing and singing clean vocals for Southern California’s Of Mice & Men, Shayley left the band to the shock of fans everywhere. However, he emerged from that tumult stronger than ever. Receiving a call from old friend and drummer Raul Martinez, they decided to jam together. There were no rules. There were no ‘scene’ restrictions. It was just going to be fun. Adding bassist Jordan Wooley to the fold, the trio tapped into something kinetic. Fusing together warm melodies, gnashing spacey guitars, and heavy rhythms, Dayshell came to life.

THIS WILD LIFE Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso knew the punk rock rulebook backwards and forwards. The duo behind This Wild Life grew up doing exactly what’s expected of kids growing up in the tightknit DIY scene in Long Beach, avoiding MTV and the radio, attending punk shows at Chain Reaction, the ear gauges, the tattoos and of course, they started their own pop-punk band. This Wild Life create heartfelt, melodic and acoustic punk-rock. But their melding of punk and folk is just an extension of their adolescence. They take pride in making music based in hardcore and punk rock, but with wider appeal.

THE BENNIES

Q&A from Anty Horgan.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I think to teleport! You could rob banks so easily and never have to go to an airport every again! If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Dr. Chron. Outfit would look like a big ol’ green leaf. What’s the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? A Black Sabbath beer pong table - It belongs to the drummer (Jake) from Clowns. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? Gotham city blues. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? Led Zeppelin.

That would have to be my Dad, you could just watch him all day. He’s like a monkey in the zoo. I have no idea how he got there. If Batman was in a band, what would it sound like? Joy Division. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Probably In Bloom by Nirvana. As far as I remember it was the first song that I really noticed the chord progression and it sounded really nice to my ears, so I had a go at it.

DEATHSTARS

Q&A from Whiplasher.

If you could possess any super power, what would it be? I would turn every boring room into an Orgy. If you could be a superhero, what would you be called and what would your outfit look like? Orgy Man, and I would be the most naked superhero in the book. Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? I’m more into villains, so I’d go with Skeletor in Masters of the Universe, simply because I am a huge fan. I have been collecting He-Man stuff since I was a kid. Which song motivated you to pursue music? Police Car by Larry Wallis. Describe your most regrettable haircut. Short and blue.

Which superhero would you most like to collaborate with and why? The Hulk because no one would mess with you if he was your best friend. Which superheroes would make the greatest musical supergroup and why? It’s got to be Superman on drums for the power, Spiderman on bass. Marv from Sin City on vocals, no one would mess with him.
