Nice as Pai Labelled one of Melbourne’s most anticipated brands, fashion label PAI is set to turn heads. Starting with a pasta fight between newly found friends-in-creativity Angie Pai and Adrian Bressanuti, the label oozes a kooky-cool attitude, graphic talent and an all-round fresh vibe. We caught up with the duo to discuss M&M’s in ice-cream and Skittles in vodka.

so a lot of the technical processes and discovering my aesthetic came along with that. Do you each have designated jobs? How is the design clash? Angie: Adrian has experience in tailoring and pattern making so he’s usually in charge of making the perfect canvas to start off. Then I try and look after what to do on the garments, the designs, whether we use embroidery or crochet to execute. The design clash is usually pretty minimal because we try and take on different roles. Adrian: It’s much the same for the business side too.

getting the processes, shapes and proportions down pat. That masculine, oversized feel along side the clean and crafty finishes was something we really wanted to get right from the start. Describe for us the ultimate PAI person. No gluten intolerance No Yoga No Quinoa Hates Kale. If there were three rules to wearing PAI, what would that be?

IN T E RVI EW BY TABATHA TURNER

So, you guys haven’t been friends for very long, are there any hidden secrets you’d like to share with each other right now? Angie: I uncontrollably get food on all my clothes. Adrian: My middle name is Pablo and I once had a stamp collection. How did you meet? Angie: I’d known of Adrian from his previous label (called Adrian Bressanutti) because a friend modelled for him. One time I invited him over for dinner but instead of cooking for him, Adrian ended up making fresh pasta with heaps of fancy stuff like mascarpone and wild mushrooms. Then we just became friends because I felt pretty guilty. What did you think you would be doing right now if you didn’t meet? Adrian: Working a shitty hospo job hoping something like this would fall into my lap. Angie: Slaving away at university and eating Jarlsberg cheese on pay days. Where did your design knowledge come from and develop? Angie: Mostly from high school in art classes. My studio art teacher (Ms. Pettigrew) was actually the best, always finding and giving me new inspiration. Mum is very artistically inclined as well. When she’s not being annoying and complaining about how women in the Qing Dynasty wouldn’t wear our clothes, she teaches me a lot. Adrian: It’s hard to pinpoint a time. I think by forcing myself to be surrounded by objects and ideas that are creatively stimulating. I studied Fashion Design at uni

20

We take on such different roles but we always manage to throw ideas at each other and pick up the loose slack. I guess it’s a little unconventional but the balance is real healthy. How do you pick your models? Angie: Our main drive has always been to share our work with the people who inspired us to start them in the first place, many of these being musicians and artists in Melbourne such as I’lls, Klo, Oscar Key Sung and Banoffee. We’ll ask and if they say yes, we shit ourselves being happy. Tell me a little about the design and construction of your garments. Angie: It started with me trying to put my illustrations onto shirts but instead of printing them, I really wanted to try and do something different. I started embroidering and eventually asked Adrian for help. Adrian adds the lush, expensive touch with his skilful pasta fingers so they look heaps better now. Adrian: Yeah, definitely. So much work went into

1. Probably a main one is wear each garment for their designated body part. But getting experimental is pretty fun, hey. 2. Wear a hair net if you’re cooking in it. 3. Maybe don’t wear stilettos. I dunno, nah you can if you want. M&M’s or Skittles? Angie: M&M’s in ice cream, Skittles in vodka. Adrian: I’m with Angie on this one. Salami or Ham? Angie: I’m taoist :( Adrian: Is this rhetorical? Burrito or Taco? Angie: Mum said I have to answer fried rice. Adrian: Porque no los dos? Images: Jonno Révanche Model: Kevin Cheung helloimpai.com

Made from Scratch

It’s been five years since the release of Miami Horror’s debut album, Illumination and now the four-piece have finally dropped their sophomore album, All Possible Futures. We chatted to Ben about the music, his bizarre experiences in Buenos Aires and his conflicting fashion sense. IN T E RVI EW BY ARIANNA LUCENTE

You’ve just released All Possible Futures but Illumination was released in 2010. Why such a long break? After the release of Illumination, we went on tour for about a year, moved to LA and settled in. Aaron and I wanted to make a ’60s, ’70s pop-psychedelic album. It took two years and we toured among that. We made a lot of songs and it’s hard to stop until you’re happy. Every song on All Possible Futures was made from scratch. We didn’t repeat any of the sounds or drum samples so it took a lot more effort. I’ve read that you try to steer away from being trendy with your music. How can your music be timeless if you’re taking influences from those decades? Because it’s from 40 years ago and people still like it. I find that really specific technological genres are least liked after their peak. Like jack swing in the ’90s or trance clubby music or that fake deep house vibe that’s happening now. I enjoy them but it lasts while it’s hot and it’s going to be really lame in a few years. You’re on tour a lot. Do you prefer making music or performing it? Touring is a lot harder. You sleep four hours at night for a week. I love creating, writing and producing something that stands out in history. I like the idea of putting out a finished record.

22

Favourite place you’ve travelled to? I love New York and Paris – the big amazing cities. My favourite used to be Buenos Aires but I’ve been there so many times, so now it’s not as exciting. I’ve made a lot of friends there and South America is very friendly but you realise there’s a lot of acting going on. I found that people I thought were friends hated each other and it’s strange because they’re so polite. I know all cultures can be like that and it was just some groups, but this was next level. Can you speak Spanish? I was learning because I had a girlfriend from Argentina but we broke up. Spanish is one of the easier, more useful languages to learn. We spend a lot of time in South America and Mexico. They’re probably our biggest fan bases. Tell me about the album cover art. Annu Kilpeläinen came to us with a concept of legs coming out of a convertible car. It’s playful because you don’t know what’s happening. You can’t see the rest of her – just these legs coming out. We wanted to have a photo with Annu’s patterns on the legs but that fell through so we ended up shooting it with our friend Dylan and I edited the pastel colours. What’s your personal style? I’ve always been interested in fashion but every time I look back at what I used to wear, I’m a bit horrified. I never know if I can trust my current judgement. I have this conflict between having really unique, awkward, weird fashion sense, and wanting to look aesthetically appealing. I dream of dressing up in the most random clothes but I want to remain physically attractive. It’s fairly obvious that you’re going to be more attractive in a white t-shirt than a rainbow-coloured Kmart sweater from the ’80s. What’s your favourite food in America? Barbecue ribs are pretty amazing. All Possible Futures is out now. miamihorror.com

Believe the Hype For a fashion graduate, the road ahead can be long and arduous. But not for Alexandra Louise Champion Hackett, the brains behind namesake label A.L.C.H. Fresh outta uni, the girl is already killing it, fielding requests from Lady Gaga and getting recognised in the street. So just how has she done it? We sat down and picked her brain.

So we heard you turned down Lady Gaga... Wow, I’m surprised anyone really knows about that! I got emailed about a year ago by her stylist, after which I did a few background checks, to see if it was legit (as I always do when I get emails requesting garments) and it seemed so. I actually did send her one outfit, but instantly regretted it. Thankfully, she chose not to wear it and it was returned super quickly! Why did you regret it? At that point in my career, I honestly got a little star-struck and definitely compromised my brand vision. Since then, I’ve learnt it’s okay to say no to people, and I feel really strongly about controlling product placement and the role that ‘celebrities’ and social media play. Even without Gaga, you’ve dressed a pretty solid lineup of musos (including FJ

24

fave Banoffee). Any other music collabs in the pipeline? Yeah, I’ve dressed Little Dragon, Oscar Key Sung, MJX, Floria and various other local producers. I’ve dressed QT for a couple of events too. We got introduced at the BBE Xmas Weekender in Melbourne, and I discovered she was also really interested in questioning the notion of fabrication, and we’ve been collaborating on a number of garments for upcoming shows since! I also do the merchandise and some creative direction for Grey Marle Music – a new music label based in Melbourne that features a lot of my favourite producers (e.g. Deer, Dugong Jr, Fossa Beats, Chiefs etc.) Explain A.L.C.H. A.L.C.H is my initials (Alexandra Louise Champion Hackett). It’s not necessarily a ‘fashion label’, it’s more of a creative practice that encompasses a variety of things – it’s my brand. A friend of mine

once said “be your brand, be your biggest fan” and that’s not only stuck with me, it’s something I live my life by. You work with some pretty unconventional materials. What’s been your favourite? Unconventional is probably an understatement in some cases. My favourite material is anything with a polyethylene base – especially plastics I find on the side of the road, used packaging etc. And the most nightmarish? Most nightmarish was NASA space foil, just because it’s so fragile – one tear, and the whole garment falls apart. What are you working on at the moment? Well, the main thing I’m working on is a capsule collection to be sold on my online store

(www.a-l-c-h.biz), a sort of diffusion line. I’m really trying to stand against the traditional boundaries of fashion labels in Australia (and internationally). The collection is season-less, meaning it’s not designed specifically for winter or summer and will only be available in small quantities, as everything is made by hand in Melbourne. You’ve grown in popularity pretty quickly, have you got any haters yet? Yeah totally. I got a huge amount of hate last year over an interview I did. I had people linking me to it left, right and centre on the internet. Fashion is a tough industry and you’ve got to have a tough shell if you want to survive. It’s not all blog posts and street style (both of which I am strictly anti). It’s averaging four-six hours sleep a night, it’s working a part-time retail job to pay the bills, and it’s sacrificing your social life for your career. Who do you most want to dress? Yung Lean. What’s been your proudest moment so far? Logging onto Boiler Room and seeing QT perform in my clothes. Also, when I received my first free pair of sneakers from Nike. Oh, and when I get recognised in the street – I’m always in so much shock when that happens! Any chance you’ll start doing womenswear (plz)? Not anytime soon, sorry! Although, despite being a menswear designer, a lot of the clothing items and accessories I create are technically unisex. Favourite colour? Chartreuse. It’s essentially the only colour I wear (excluding black and white). Your all time favourite wardrobe piece? Sneakers – atm, my favs are my silver Nike Shox TLX and my Free Orbits.

Napoleon Says If like us, you are a massive fan of the 'no make-up look', you are going to love Camera Finish Close-Up Complexion Perfecting Powder from Napoleon Perdis. We caught up with the make-up guru himself to find out the key to a flawless complexion.

How do we apply the Camera Finish Close-Up Complexion Perfecting Powder? Always with a brush that's relevant to the size of the area you're applying. If you want to mattify the T-Zone, use a large, firm brush to press the powder over the skin. For a more precise application, try using Sculpting Brush 10r to gently sweep the powder under the eyes, around the sides of the nose or press over a blemish. How does Camera Finish work? It’s an ultra-light skin polisher that mattifies the skin and offers a soft-focus finish, just like your own personal Instagram filter! Cornflower extract conditions the skin as it mattifies and Jojoba Esters lock moisture into the skin for a comfortable feel and wear. We’ve read that it reduces fine lines. How does this work? A super fine blend of spherical and silicone powders have a blurring effect on the skin, optically minimising the appearance of fine lines. The moisturising properties of Safflower Seed Oil and the Jojoba Esters mattify without making the skin look dry and cakey, for the smoothest possible matte finish. Why should it become part of our beauty routine? This product is almost a powder-less powder, which means it's great for beauties who love a no make-up look or don't like a build of texture on the surface of the skin. Use the Camera Finish Close-Up Complexion Perfecting Powder to de-shine and mattify without a powdery finish. napoleonperdis.com

CHANEL SHOPPING CENTRE

YOUNG

Karl Lagerfeld

Dr. Grace McQuilten and Morgan Brown

Heather Lighton

When Karl Lagerfeld showcased his Fall/Winter ’15 collection at the purpose-built Chanel Shopping Centre, it was pretty much the best thing the fashion community had ever seen. The detail that went into that place was mind-blowing. Features included models shopping the aisles with Chanel trolleys and Chanel-branded everything. Chanel Shopping Centre documents this detail with a series of close-up images of the shopping centre's stock. From the labels on the Chanel sardines to the way the items were methodically stacked, it holds a well-zoomed lens to the whole shebang. You did good Lagerfeld, you did good.

Well you guys are going to love this. The Social Studio is a community base where creatives are invited to learn, collaborate, network, upskill, practise, work, play and pretty much do it all. It strives to create awareness and change public perceptions for people who have experienced being a refugee. It’s pretty amazing. In its debut book, The Social Studio profiles those active within this community, sharing their histories, ambitions, skills, work and stories. In short, it’s an introduction to the studio through those who are a part of its dynamic community and it’s pretty damn cool.

Those familiar with Heather Lighton’s work will know she has an eye for beauty. The Melbournebased photographer finds and frames all things beautiful in one hell of a dreamy photo series. So it’s no surprise that in scouting talent for her debut book, she chose subjects based purely on physical beauty. YOUNG profiles these ten beautiful women across a series of pastel-heavy portraits and accompanying interviews. More than simply aesthetically stunning (which it really, really is), this book is a brief insight into the lives of ten interesting and talented young women. Get it on your coffee table, stat.

ALBUM REVIEWS WHY MAKE SENSE?

SOUND & COLOR

ALLIE X

Hot Chip

Alabama Shakes

COLLXTION I

Hot Chip has always been a dorky band, there's no denying that. It's a kind of charming, infectious dorky of course. Their sixth studio album, Why Make Sense? does little to change this, continuing their streak of cartoonish electro pop releases. This is, however, Hot Chip's most low key album yet. You can almost hear them holding back from jumping into full goofy break down mode on every track. Except for "White Wine and Fried Chicken" which is potentially the most bizarre electro ballad I've ever heard. There's also a slightly unfortunate guest rap on "Love Is The Future" but the less said about that the better. If you take yourself very seriously, I'm sorry to say but this probably isn't the album for you. But for the rest us, Why Make Sense? is a tongue-in-cheek fun time and definitely worth on uninhibited bedroom dance or two.

Sound & Color is an extremely apt title for Alabama Shakes sophomore record, as it literally sounds like the band has used all the colours in the crayon box for this release. Branching out from the rootsy rock of their debut, Sound & Color embraces such a diverse bunch of influences that they almost sound like different bands from track to track. These songs jump from soul to grunge to blues and back without batting a lash. That said, lead vocalist Brittany Howard's amazing and unrestrained soulful voice unifies the tracks into a cohesive whole. Worth noting, Sound & Color probably has one of the strongest opening five song runs I've heard in a long time. With this album, Alabama Shakes conjures up images of a never-ending road trip into the surreal and it is truly the sound of a band creating and perfecting a genre all of their own.

"Forget what I need, give me what I want" Allie X sings on highlight track "Prime" and I can't think of a better way to sum up her debut EP. This is pure pop music: the sugary, possibly bad for your health kind. I like to call it Tumblr Pop. Incredibly catchy melodies are here in abundance, and coupled with the extremely polished production, they'll wiggle their way into your head and potentially never leave. I think I may have listened to lead single “Catch” about a hundred times already. It's really good, guys. You do however end up feeling a little like this is the work of an artist still finding her feet, as a couple of the tracks here (namely Disney-esque opener "Hello") seem at odds with the rest of the decidedly darker bunch. But the highs outweigh these moments by far and Collxtion I easily delivers a handful of pop gems that you'll inevitably be humming for the next year or so.
