The Scoop

Converse Converse has tapped Zayn Malik to front its latest One Star campaign, celebrating his bold style and fierce individuality. Following in the footsteps of Tyler, the Creator, Zayn is the perfect anti-hero who embodies what the One Star is all about. The shoe is crafted to symbolise self-expression, worn by those who aren’t interested in following the rules. Check out fresh colourways online and in-store now. CONVERSE.COM.AU

Phare

UNIQLO

Dr. Martens

Phare is making a mark on the retail scene, with the launch of its very first store. The space will be home to the brand’s luxurious footwear collection for the next six months, allowing customers to interact with the offering in person. Expect to be immersed in the world of designer Petrina Hare, who’s filled the store with Italian architectural elements, brightly-coloured ottomans and sculptures. Pay her a visit at 607 Malvern Road, Toorak, VIC.

UNIQLO has revealed its upcoming collection with Ines de La Fressange, including a long-anticipated children’s line. The Fall/Winter drop takes cues from 1920s Montmartre fashion, featuring a tailored range of comfortable wardrobe essentials. Expect classic coats in tweed, cashmere and corduroy, demonstrating the very best of Parisian style. The offering for kids retains the same quality fabrics across tailored jackets, pea coats and other French-inspired elements. Now in its 10th season, UNIQLO’s collaboration with Ines de La Fressange is set to launch August 30.

Dr. Martens is staying true to its connection to music and subcultures, joining forces with Joy Division and New Order for the collaboration of a lifetime. Album artwork from each band has been embossed and printed onto 1460 8-Eye boots, giving new meaning to the term ‘wearable art’. Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures is reimagined onto black leather, while New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies (pictured) is printed onto suede. Shop the range online and in-store.

Hot or Not WITH BIANCA O'NEILL ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

Cowboy boots I have equal parts terrible and amazing news for you: fash peeps have announced that cowboy boots are the hot new shoe. Karlie Kloss is featured in W Mag wearing them, Coach and Calvin Klein have released versions, and on a personal note, I bought a pair in Marrakech two years ago that I haven’t worn yet. So… let’s kick this trend off already, shall we? *2000s Madonna references pending* HOT

Bike shorts. No, really

adidas Originals Watches adidas Originals has dropped a fresh line of watches to add a pop of colour to your accessory game. The new addition is called the PROCESS SP1, and utilises unexpected materials to construct a classic and streamlined silhouette. Japanese quartz movements are combined with a custom-moulded case and a silicone strap, with eight colours to choose from. Each timepiece arrives at the very wallet-friendly price of $119. We’ll take one of each, thanks. ADIDASWATCHES.COM/AU

It’s not just Kim Kardashian who is driving the bike short trend – I’ve also spotted my personal girl crush Christine Centenera wearing black lycra bike shorts with a suit jacket and LV bumbag. I hated it, then I hated it some more – until I saw it on CC. So chic, so YAS. You just won’t be seeing this one on me… HOT

Duchess Markle’s wardrobe When Megs nabbed a coveted spot on the royal roster, I was excited. Finally! Someone with a little pizzazz! Alas, she has fallen into the conservative princess trap and has barely sent my heart aflutter since she commenced her royal duties. Beige and light pink and cream, oh meh. MEH

The questionable Paris front row Diet Prada is leading the charge for fashion to get on board with the #MeToo movement, dissing designers for seating known abusers in their front rows. The duo called out Ian Connor at LV (21 rape allegations to his name), as well as Roman Polanski at Miu Miu (convicted assault of a 13-year-old) and A$AP Bari at Dior (arrested for sexual assault). Can’t say I disagree.

Bed Threads Good quality bedding which doesn’t break the bank can be hard to come by. Genevieve Rosen-Biller knows this all too well, after a quest to find decent linen at an affordable price proved fruitless. Following two years of rigorous product development and research, the journalist-turned-entrepreneur launched Bed Threads in 2017. Made from 100 per cent French flax linen, Bed Threads’ bedding is anti-bacterial, anti-static and can regulate temperature. Pick from sets in rosewater, olive, fog and ink colourways for a bed that looks good and is cosy too. BEDTHREADS.COM.AU

Roll Up The latest delivery from Converse sees the One Star arrive in four bright colourways. Dubbed the Carnival pack, the release gives the silhouette a bold makeover with the addition of a contrasting coloured star. Teamed with suede panels and lining that matches the star, this drop has the finer details looked after. Good Night

More Than Ever More Than Ever wants you to know that bedding can be fun. That’s why the brand embraces a mixand-match approach to decking out the places where we lay our heads. All pieces in the range are designed for creating endless combinations – keep things simple and sophisticated, or have fun with a variety of playful patterns and designs. You don’t need to be an interior designer to expertly style your sets either. There’s a consistent colour palette throughout, so everything looks great matching and just as good all mixed up. Best of all, the price point is pretty nice too – shop bedding from $69 and cushion covers from $49. MORETHANEVER.COM.AU

Wanderluxe Sleepwear Wanderluxe Sleepwear has recently launched its second range, aptly titled Collection No.2. Inspired by Savile Row tailoring, but reinterpreted for the female form, the brand has created the ultimate luxe ‘his shirt for her’. Like the debut collection, the new drop arrives in simple shapes, classic stripes and fresh colours. Central to the label is an emphasis on luxury and timeless styles. And it was this commitment to quality that prompted founder Sherri Kiernikowski to develop a line of signature fabrics exclusive to Wanderluxe. With PJs as good as these, you’ll never want to get out of bed. WANDERLUXESLEEPWEAR.COM

The Sheet Society Navigating the world of bedding can be overwhelming. With a number of fabrics on the market, The Sheet Society keeps things simple, using long staple 100 per cent cotton in its offering. Really good design is at the heart of this brand. Pillowcases have an extra deep flap keeping pillows trapped inside, flat sheets feature a fullylined top edge eliminating the need to fold back and quilt covers come with an invisible zip in place of fiddly buttons. To brighten things up, the brand’s just released a limited-edition print series. Its first design (right) references current interior trends, with a Terrazzo tile print on a reversible blush pink and dove grey doona cover. THESHEETSOCIETY.COM.AU

Shhh Silk If you’ve ever woken up with creases on your face after a restful night’s sleep (read: everyone ever), Shhh Silk could be the answer to your slumber woes. The brand’s 100 per cent mulberry silk cases allow your skin to glide over your pillow throughout the night, ensuring a smooth and wrinkle-free face in the morning. The unique fabrication also keeps hair shiny, frizz-free and extends the life of your blow wave. If the thought of dry cleaning your linen is off-putting, Shhh Silk has you looked after here too. Each case comes with a wash bag, allowing you to machine wash for the ultimate in low-maintenance luxury. SHHHSILK.COM.AU

Sweeter Than Candy Enter a sugar-coated universe. WORDS BY NICOLE LA RUFFA

Especially when I was younger, when I couldn’t figure out much, it really helped. As I get older, I think I almost use it less, but it becomes more poignant. Are you ever afraid of your songs becoming too personal? No, I just don’t have any fear of stuff being too personal. I think, since I was a kid, I’ve never cared much about what I share. I’m probably an over-sharer. Along with dreamy, feel-good synths, Sugar Mountain is embedded with references to your youth. Can you talk us through this? It’s kind of a darker element to the story. I lost my sister when I was 14, so it was a crazy, life-informing, insane explosion in my youth. I realised eight years on, after I’d created half of the album, that it was a way to write myself another parallel universe, a sugar-coated youth. It’s a big feeling to express, but the album is the sugary youth that I kind of dreamt up. I tried to keep in it the vulnerability and grit of the youth that I did experience. You curated the Grow Your Own festival to showcase the talent from your hometown. How important is it to you to support local artists? It’s really important. I found [breaking into the industry] really challenging, coming from the country. I feel like it took me a couple years longer than my city peers because you have to come to a whole new city, and you have no idea. Whereas city kids get to grow up with a bit of an idea of what radio stations even are (laughs), you know. Now it’s different, probably. I think it’s super important to try and get in touch with country artists and make sure they’re across what the city is across.

Jack River first propelled onto the indie-pop scene in 2016 with her EP, Highway Songs No 2. Since then, she’s scored some major love from Triple J, millions of streams on Spotify and even founded the Grow Your Own music festival. Now, the singer/songwriter has unveiled her debut LP, Sugar Mountain – a record packed with dreamy riffs and feel-good beats reminiscent of the early 2000s. If you haven’t already given it a spin, we suggest making some time to do so. To find out more, we sat down with Jack River to chat all things Sugar Mountain.

so many people are listening. It’s nice to know my songs are going to a good home.

The singles from your debut record collectively boast nearly six million streams. How does that feel? It’s just overwhelming and beautiful to know that

How therapeutic is the songwriting process? It’s extremely therapeutic. I write when I’m overwhelmed by something I can’t figure out.

The tracks reveal some pretty personal lyrics. How much of the record is inspired by your own experiences? I guess most of it, probably 100 per cent, is inspired by whatever I’m feeling at the time. A lot of this record I was feeling quite dark, and trying to push through and write myself out of situations. So, it’s kind of like experiencing it but also pushing out of it.

You’ll be hitting the road in September for your national Sugar Mountain tour. What songs are you really looking forward to performing? I’m really keen to play ‘Confess’, ‘Constellation Ball’ and ‘Fields’, so I’m planning that at the moment. They’re such big, anthemic songs to me, in my head. So I hope that I can turn them into great live anthemic songs, as they are in my brain. I’ve waited so long to be able to sing those lyrics that I wrote ages ago, so it’ll be great.

Sugar Mountain is out now via I Oh You. Catch Jack River on her Sugar Mountain tour nationally from September and at Spilt Milk festival in November. JACKRIVERMUSIC.COM

Next of Kin

Studio Onethirty

Next of Kin is all about handmade goodness. The brand’s range of ceramic mugs are slow and considered, created in Next of Kin’s North Queensland studio. Due to their handcrafted nature, each piece is slightly different from the last. However, every product is made with the same philosophy in mind – to slow down and appreciate the little things in life. Whether you prefer tea, coffee or something in between, drinking out of a quality mug should be a special experience. And that’s the ethos Next of Kin lives by. View the unique creations online.

If you’re on the hunt for furnishings that’ll brighten up your home, then it will be worth paying a visit to Studio Onethirty. The online store is a hub of colour and pattern, housing furniture, decor, textiles, bespoke tiles and art. Behind the brand is artist Sarah Kalidis, who develops each product from her original drawings. Taking influence from botanical colours and textures, Sarah merges her artistry with utility to form bold and playful pieces which are then produced locally. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, Sarah welcomes the opportunity to collaborate on custom orders.

Matilda Chambers Studios

OneTeaspoon

In a world of mass production, there’s something special about items for the home that are made by hand. This sentiment rings true for Matilda Chambers, an artist from the south coast of Victoria who lovingly creates bespoke ceramics. Matilda finds inspiration from the Australian landscape and imbues this into her offering of jugs, water pitchers, planters, plates, bowls, vases and more. We’ve got our eyes set firmly on the ceramic travel cups (pictured) which come in three different colours. As well as being easy on the eye and kind to the environment, they’re made with a food, microwave and dishwasher safe glaze.

OneTeaspoon has entered back into the homewares market and, when you think about it, the move makes complete sense. Perfect for those who live in denim during the day, the release means you can now cover your bedroom in your fave fabric. The collection stays true to the brand’s Northern Beaches rock ’n’ roll aesthetic, with slogan-emblazoned cushion covers, blankets and bedding in OneTeaspoon’s signature distressed denim look. If you’re keen to deck out your pad, you’ll need to be quick about it. With some pieces having already sold out, the collection will be restocked this month. OneTeaspoon HOME arrives alongside the brand’s first kids’ collection.

Sustainable Swaps Environmentally-friendly household alternatives to shop from the comfort of your couch. WORDS BY HANNAH COLE

Call me lazy or fickle, but I love online shopping; there is no denying its magic spark. Even the most boring of purchases become exciting when a package is left on your doorstep. You might know what’s inside, but there’s something special about the unveiling. While online shopping does have its downsides – i.e. the sustainability of shipping – it sure does make life easier. Checking off the to-do list is much less daunting when driving/ parking/shopping centre anxieties are out of the picture. And it also means far fewer excuses for dismissing sustainable changes around the home. With the eco-world at our fingertips, here are some simple swaps that can be made while Netflix is still streaming.

Buy Recycled Toilet Paper Anything with “recycled” in its title is music to my sustainably-pricked ears. And honestly, would your bum notice the difference? The simple switch is made a billion times easier thanks to Who Gives A Crap. Purchase 100 per cent recycled toilet paper (made from recycled paper) to help build toilets for those in need. Buy in bulk and subscribe for regular deliveries – you’ll never have to wonder where that last roll got to again.

Invest in Bamboo Sheets

Start a Veggie Patch

My life and sleeping patterns literally changed for the better as soon as I committed to a set of bamboo sheets. They keep you warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and are silky smooth to the touch. Plus, bamboo is an enviro-friendly fibre, using far less water and land area than regular cotton. So, what have you got to lose? Ettitude is my pick; with so many colours on offer, you are guaranteed a beautiful bed and a pretty sweet sleep.

Swap your store-bought veggies for your own, grown with tender love and care. All you need is a windowsill or balcony, and a treasure trove of pots. Order some seed kits online from The Little Veggie Patch Co – anything from herbs and microgreens to tomatoes and watermelon. Reap the rewards of homegrown, pesticide-free, freshas-fresh-can-be vegetables all year ’round and host the most impressive dinner parties. You can thank me later.

Opt for Natural Hygiene Products It’s scary to think that every product we use in the sink, shower or otherwise, ends up in our oceans. What kind of toxic chemicals have we been pouring down the drain for decades? Ditch the harsh substances and ghastly microbeads to benefit both our bodies and those of our little fish friends. Select products made from natural ingredients instead, like Thankyou’s delicious Lime and Coriander or Sweet Orange and Almond hand wash. Purchase online and also support projects to end poverty around the world.

Shop Thoughtfully The final shout-out goes to Nourished Life for making almost every eco-purchase simple. Create an account, earn points, and go wild decking out your whole house with natural products. Try vegan nail polish, stock up on beeswax wraps and sustainable cleaning products. See? It’s not that hard. I dare you to take the plunge; make a swap this month and let it stick.

DESIGNER PROFILES

Spotlight On

Solomon Street

Salia Jać

Solomon Street is the perfect poster child for the circular fashion movement. The label is launching its first pieces of apparel in November, with an offering that will span leisurewear and swimwear in classic ’70s silhouettes. Sustainable values are front and centre, with all garments made in Adelaide from natural fibres and recycled PET fabric. In an effort to work towards a zero waste business model, clothing can also be returned to Solomon Street for recycling or repair. Original prints are the highlight of the brand’s offering, created through colour pencil illustration. Adorning the current range you’ll find bold depictions of grapefruits, figs and apricots. Delicious.

Salia Jać just launched in April of this year, but it’s already making a bold statement. The PETA-accredited label prides itself on handmaking collections in Melbourne and Sydney, without the use of any animal fibres. Also of note is Salia Jać’s complete transparency in all aspects of its supply chains. From the field to the wearer, the label utilises ethical and sustainably-sourced GOTS cotton and dead-stock fabrics. Designed for the rebellious and romantic at heart, founder Saloan Cilia cites boundary-pushing French and Japanese street style as the inspiration behind the debut release. And like limited-edition art, each garment comes numbered, so you know you’ve purchased an exclusive small-run piece.

Gabriella Luchini

Grown Royal

Gabriella Luchini’s love for jewellery goes all the way back to making pasta necklaces as a five-year-old. Fast forward a few years and Gabriella now explores experimental methods to create new plays on form and texture. Formally trained in the art, every piece of her fine jewellery is personally made from her studio in Surry Hills. Designs are heavily influenced by the Italian Renaissance and Baroque art movements, with all items created as modern takes on family heirlooms. Equally as important as the jewellery itself is Gabriella’s commitment to lowering the brand’s environmental impact. Allowing you to shop guilt-free, Gabriella Luchini only uses recycled metals and ethically-sourced gemstones.

Grown Royal began in Manchester and came to life in Australia. Its vision is to create menswear that goes above average, fusing high-end fashion with a street aesthetic. The designs are simple, using unique fits to create a range you’ll feel comfortable in. Expect baseball-inspired tees, embroidered track pants and terry cotton shorts in a muted colour palette. The aim is to create a community that encourages others to challenge the status quo, and look the best they can while doing it. HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY

Myth Busters Makeup advice is easy to find in the age of social media. However, with so many self-proclaimed beauty gurus, it can be hard to know where to turn for information. To cut through the clutter, we asked three makeup artists to bust some of the biggest beauty myths they come up against.

Rob Povey MYTH: YOU NEED TO WEAR MORE BASE MAKEUP AT NIGHT

Shev Kelly MYTH: BRONZER IS BEST FOR CONTOURING

Contouring is meant to look natural and shape/ sculpt the face. Bronzer, on the other hand, is intended to warm up the complexion. Bronzer used as a contour can look a lil’ orange and can stand out a bit too much. Stick to a contouring cream or powder two shades darker than your skin tone for supermodel cheekbones. MYTH: BAKING IS ESSENTIAL

Not unless you’re baking a cake. Leave the OTT powder and drying products off your face, especially under the eyes. It can instantly age the skin and look very unnatural. If your base is wearing off, swap your foundation/concealer for one specific to your skin type. NAPOLEONPERDIS.COM

@SHEVKELLYMUA

03268 Fashion Journal Eleven Quarter Strip AD.indd 1

People often feel like they need to compensate for makeup fading away, sliding around or shining up while out drinking and dancing by applying additional layers of coverage. The truth is, the less product you have sitting on your face, the less there is to be moving around and fighting against your skin’s natural oil production. Also, the absence of harsh lighting at night means you’re only ever viewed under far softer and more flattering conditions. So what is there to hide? Focus on building thin, light layers of foundation to even out the skin and then conceal any areas that still require additional coverage. Secure all the hot spots (areas you know are prone to shining up) by pressing a very fine translucent powder into the skin. MYTH: SOME PEOPLE DON’T SUIT RED LIPSTICK

Literally everybody can wear a red – it’s about finding the most flattering undertone for your complexion and the right intensity/opacity for your comfort level. In terms of undertones, fair and cooler skin tones will really brighten up with a blue-based red (like a cherry). More olive/ golden complexions tend to harmonise best with a neutral to warmer-toned red (almost orange), dark complexions will always look amazing with the richer, deeper hues of red (think vampy merlots and burgundies), and the deepest of dark skins can really go in any direction they please. If it’s the ‘look-at-me’ impact of a red that’s deterring you, opt for more muted applications.

Instead of a solid lipstick, go for a sheerer gloss or balm version, or if matte is more your taste, look into lip stains. PEOPLE.AGENCY

@ROBPOVEYMUA

Georgia Ramman MYTH: MAKEUP APPLICATION IS BEST DONE USING PROFESSIONAL BRUSHES

Sometimes brushes just don’t cut it on their own. Often the best results for a healthy-looking base, or a creamy cheek and lip, are created with a mix of fingers and brushes. The warmth of those little hands can help your products sit beautifully and seamlessly on your skin. When it comes to brushes, just because a brush is labelled for a particular purpose, doesn’t mean that’s all it’s good for. I use fluffy brushes for concealer, foundation brushes for liquid bronzer, mascara brush for brows, concealer brush for lips… the list goes on. MYTH: DEWY SKIN DOESN’T NEED POWDER

For many liquid and certain cream foundations, powder is a necessity. A light dust on important areas will make such a difference for your dew. Always powder spots such as your T-zone, the sides of your nose, under your eyes, below your cheeks. You can still achieve a beautiful, dewy glow and not look like you need blotting paper to smack you in the face. Then highlight away, but please, with class and the right tone for your skin type. Addicted?

Waste Not

The Pisces

MATT NOFFS & KIERAN PALMER

ERIN RHOADS

MELISSA BRODER

Upon reading the blurb for Addicted?, I immediately made the assumption it was to be a dry and dull read, filled with statistics and jargon. But that’s just not the case here. The non-fiction presents an overarching argument about the media’s perception of drug addiction and the ‘ice epidemic’, ironically juxtaposing the idea of the supposed ‘crisis’ with discussion about our society’s obsession with screens. I was pleasantly surprised at how conversational this read was. Despite commenting on Australia’s drug regulations and addiction at its most serious level, it weaves metaphors and stories throughout, helping the reader relate to the topic in a number of ways. With stories from previous addicts, historical anecdotes and mindfulness exercises for everyone to try throughout, this book is an interesting read with an even more important message.

Everything Is Love

Phantastic Ferniture

THE CARTERS

PHANTASTIC FERNITURE

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have paired up for this new album under the moniker The Carters. Originally only available on Tidal, it’s now thankfully streaming across other platforms. But unfortunately for Bey and Jay, it really hasn’t made the kind of waves you’d expect from the stellar pairing. I’d suggest the joint release was made solely to coincide with their joint world tour, and the short nine-track release certainly hints at that. But is it good? Well, when we’re talking the laid-back ‘Summer’ and ‘Friends’, it’s more reminiscent of a rejected Beyoncé track… meh. Then you’re hit with nuggets like first single ‘Apeshit’ and ‘Lovehappy’, and you’re totally sold. It’s a bit all over the place, really.

50

We all know how detrimental plastic is to the environment. But even the thought of attempting to reduce our plastic consumption is a task that can seem really, really overwhelming. At a time when we’re finally beginning to see a shift in our dependance on the material, Erin Rhoads’ Waste Not should be present in every household. Broken down into key areas – food, cleaning, beauty, entertaining and kids and pets – the compendium’s gone beyond just telling us why we need to reduce our waste, showing us how to do it without being unrealistic or over the top. The pages are filled with DIY projects, recipes for homemade cleaning products and even ideas on waste-free gift wrapping. If you’re ready to make a dent in your waste consumption, this will be your bible.

Julia Jacklin isn’t sad anymore… it seems she’s hung up her folk guitar and joined a garage pop band. And I’m loving it. Phantastic Ferniture’s self-titled full length isn’t really for the music nerds out there. It has an easy adolescence about it that seems incongruous with the weather right now, but is right on target for a bunch of summer festival lineup additions. I find it interesting that the first single was ‘Fuckin ‘N’ Rollin’ – it’s certainly not the best, or the most fun. But hey, that’s the mysterious Triple J playlist for you. Try ‘I Need It’ or ‘Dark Corner Dance Floor’ instead.

There’s a good chance you’ve seen some press about The Pisces, and for good reason. The first novel from the creator of So Sad Today and Lenny Letter columnist, Melissa Broder, details a love story between a heartbroken (and somewhat unlikable) PhD student and a merman named Theo. To say I was curious about the storyline was an understatement – all I’d heard about this book was that it was a comedy and it included humanmerman intercourse. But what Broder delivers is much more than just a fantastical narrative or light-hearted romantic novel. The story is deeply depressing, yet doesn’t leave you feeling glum. With a profound feminist voice embedded throughout, you can expect an impactful and relatable story broaching depression, anxiety, suicide, abusive relationships and independence. And yes, a lot of merman sex.

Scorpion DRAKE

How much longer can we all indulge Drake’s navel-gazing lines? How much longer are we meant to believe his insistence that he’s such a great guy, while he raps about ‘hoes’ trying to hit him up for false paternity tests (yet at the same time it’s revealed that he’s hidden an illegitimate child from the world?) I blame the sick beats. I blame his smooth vocals, excellent samples and deftly chosen guests. But with Scorpion, I’m becoming tired of the Drake mythology. It is clear that it’s time for Drake to stop playing the (rich, famous) victim. Christ, he even has a track called ‘I’m Upset’. Uggghhhhh. Jay-Z has manned up. Heck, even Kanye’s done it. It’s time to grow up, my man.
