Felicity Cooney Drawing inspiration from the bright colours of the Australian landscape, Felicity Cooney does things a little differently. The designer’s just unveiled her AW collection, comprising of a crossbody bag, carry-all tote and her first range of brogues. Arriving in cornflower blue or khaki colourways, the shoes have been crafted in Melbourne from sustainably-sourced kangaroo leather. Jac+ Jack x Two Good

Vans

By Johnny has just released its debut swimwear range, which is fitting considering we’re in serious need of a warm-weather getaway. Dropping in time for the European summer, BYJNY SWIM remains true to the label’s signature aesthetic, with strong silhouettes and statement digital prints. Look out for boldly-coloured separates and one-pieces made from high quality, double-sided neo lycra. More styles are set to land in the months leading up to summer.

Jac+ Jack has collaborated with non-for-profit group Two Good on a jumper and trackies set that will make a difference to more than just your wardrobe. A ‘buy one, give one’ model means that any time you purchase a piece from Two Good’s store, an identical item is given to a woman living in a domestic violence shelter. With winter upon us, the Jac+ Jack lounge set is a way of making sure these women have access to warm, practical clothing. The sweatshirt, pants and matching tote can be purchased separately or together.

For its latest release, Vans is paying homage to the box-office hit Avengers: Infinity War. The range sees Marvel put its touch on apparel and footwear, paying tribute to everyone’s favourite superheroes. The collection spans pieces for the whole family, with hoodies, tees and hats arriving in men’s, women’s and kid’s styles. Sneaker fans can indulge in Old Skools inspired by Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor, while the Slip-On and Sk8-Hi silhouettes take cues from Black Panther and Spider-Man.

MUSIC

Live Fast WORDS BY NIKKI ESCALANTE

A lot of mainstream artists are now bringing light to social issues. How important is it for you to be able to share these thoughts through songwriting? I think it’s a privileged position to be in, to be an artist who has the potential to reach people. I don’t want to waste the opportunity, but at the same time I think that it can be kind of annoying when an artist has too much of a political message. Sometimes I immediately get turned off from something when I’m like ‘oh, this person thinks that they’re better than me because they’re preaching to me.’ You don’t really want to do that. Any favourite lyrics from the album? I love the lyrics to ‘Little Dark Age’. I don’t really ask Andrew what the songs are about a lot of the time, so it’s cool when we’ve been working on a piece of music for a while and he’ll sing the lyrics for the first time and I’ll be like ‘I have no idea what that’s about, but it sounds really cool.’

MGMT first graced our speakers in 2007. It was a fluoro-adorned era, with the timeless dance anthem ‘Kids’ the soundtrack to our teenage rebellion. Eleven years later, the duo has brought their renowned psychedelic-funk sound to a fourth album, Little Dark Age. We caught up with one half of the group, Ben Goldwasser, to take us through the album and everything in between. How’s life been since the release of Little Dark Age? I just got home from tour yesterday, so it’s nice to be back. The year has been good. We’re mostly happy with the reception the record’s had. It’s nice to just have music that we can go out and play live that’s fun for us and that the band seems to have had an immediately positive reaction to. People are already singing along with it and everything, so that’s kind of the best we could have hoped for. It’s really rewarding. There’s a lot of emotion and social commentary packed into this record. Can you talk us through your thoughts when you were piecing everything together? In some ways, the record is sort of us coming to

12

terms with who we are, in our mid-30s, getting comfortable with that. I don’t know if it has a specific message, but a lot of it deals with asking questions about where society is in terms of our relationship to technology, or what’s going on in the world politically. It’s not necessarily picking sides, it’s more just acknowledging that things are pretty weird in the world right now. Were there any links between the songs and the current political climate? A lot of the writing happened around the [US] election but I’m not really sure if there’s a direct political message in the lyrics, or if it’s more about how the social climate informed the mood we were in while writing. A lot of that stuff came out in the music but I don’t know if it’s in a concrete way. I think feeling really anxious about the way things were going in the world made us want to write music that was relatable and catchy, because we just wanted to reach out to people and give them something that they can dance to.

In terms of sound, it’s quite the ’80s revival. Did being born in that era influence the production? When I was little kid, I didn’t really grow up listening to it. I wasn’t nostalgic for the ’80s, it’s something that I came to later on. For me, it was already a dated sound and I wanted to listen to new things. Then when I went to college I started going back and realising that pop music was amazing and I should listen to more of it. Now I really enjoy coming back to that. I also really like collecting vintage keyboards. I think it’s really cool to have a box that’s like a digital instrument that has all these sounds that are frozen in time, it’s a fun thing to explore. What’s been the biggest challenge of the last 11 years? Too numerous (laughs). I think in terms of the band, just being able to grow and change as people and figure out how to keep the band relevant and meaningful for us – and to remain close friends through all of that. To me, it has been a big challenge but a big achievement that we still like each other and enjoy what we’re doing. I don’t know of a lot of bands or musician friends who have been in it for so long and actually [still] enjoy it. I don’t know, it’s funny to imagine us as super old men bickering about things (laughs), I hope we’re still friends for a long time. MGMT and Franz Ferdinand are joining forces for two co-headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney in July. Tickets via Frontier Touring.

In Perspective WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL

It seems completely appropriate that Sarah Blasko’s latest album is called Depth of Field. Like the photography term it’s named after, often the reality of life can be blurred by a focus on one perspective – a life of limited experience. In a wide-ranging chat that veered delightfully off-topic to encompass the human condition and self-identity, we talked through the reality of life after kids, how her creative process was enhanced by film, and the fluidity of human nature. Depth of Field is a darker album for you, lyrically. Was the darker side of relationships an inspiration? The album is a bit broader than [relationships]. It’s about the veneer that people use as they carry themselves through life – and how the ‘behind closed doors’ version of a person [can be different]. I’m really intrigued by change… I think people who really know themselves and are strong of character are less changeable if you put them in different circumstances. It’s really about human nature, and how it changes, and how it’s pretty fluid. Do you think human nature changes over time as you get older? It’s interesting how age does change people – because they haven’t done the things they wanted to do in life, or their circumstances have changed really drastically. People really do change with time. I don’t know if it’s true – but it’s like how you completely regenerate [your cells], and technically you’re a different person every 15 years or something like that. You’re actually, physically, a different person.

20

In the video for ‘Never Let Me Go,’ you worked with Luke McLean Stephenson. The black and white sometimes-farce sometimes-unhinged story of a woman who essentially locks her partner away to ensure he never leaves actually weirdly connected with me… It’s not like it’s some autobiographical thing about my everyday life now. That’s what I love about music – you can just dramatise some fleeting thing, and you can write about it, and make it into this huge story or drama. It’s this place to jump in from. You can make it as big as you want. ‘Never Let Me Go’ is very tongue-in-cheek. I always find it interesting that people who are really insecure in relationships are always the people who end up treating [their partner] the worst. They’re the ones that end up cheating or treating their partner terribly – because they’re the ones who are insecure. I also thought it was kind of funny that it [brings in] that fear of ageing. I’m not sure it was intentional, or a fluke, but I thought it was funny. Does film inspire your music? Film is generally really inspiring to me – and the use of music in film… I think when you’re looking for inspiration, and you’re looking for a space that conjures up some thought and feeling, then film is a good tool. We used films that didn’t have any dialogue, films that were visual explorations of things – and it really helped. It just created a mood.

For me, ‘Never Let Me Go’ explores the insecurity that builds in relationships over time, as you start to unravel as your ‘real’ self. Is this an album about exploring vulnerability? Yeah. I wanted to explore the nature of identity. The record isn’t all about me, but to write about something with conviction, it has to start with where you’re at. I was really questioning my own identity, and who I thought I was – I really changed, particularly after having a kid and having a family life. I think people lie when they say that [having kids] doesn’t affect your personal identity, because you suddenly feel like your upbringing all comes into play in your present day life and you can’t escape it. So I was really feeling those identity issues… then I just became obsessed with thinking about, ‘what is this construct of identity?’ Did that rock your sense of self? When you realise you don’t actually know yourself… well, I felt quite confident that I knew who I was. I think it can shift really quickly, depending on what happens. You realise your insecurities quite quickly.

Depth Of Field is out now, and you can catch Sarah Blasko on tour throughout June.

Clean Conscience It's time to about dry cleaning’s nasty secret. WORDS BY HANNAH COLE

as ‘perc’ – an ingredient also found in nail polish remover and petrol. Even with strict laws to govern the containment of these chemicals, it’s hard to avoid some release into the air. It seeps out and impacts workers, the community and the environment. Considered a carcinogen, perc is known to cause dizziness, skin irritation and visual impairment. Environment-wise, perc causes air pollution, and often causes groundwater and soil contamination. The kind of thing best to steer clear of. According to Fashion Revolution, 25 per cent of our clothes’ carbon footprint comes from consumer care. With that in mind, we hold an immense responsibility in looking after our garments the right way, with minimal environmental and human impact. So, what’s a girl to do with a wardrobe full of delicate dresses and oversized coats? Consider a couple of alternatives: SEEK OUT A GREENEARTH DRY CLEANER

The talented folks at GreenEarth have devised a liquid silicone alternative to perc, offering a safe option for both humans and the environment. Liquid silicone is non-toxic and non-hazardous with a circular lifespan. Once released back into the surroundings post-washing, it safely breaks down into sand, water and carbon dioxide – the elements from whence it came. Head to greenearthcleaning.com to find a GreenEarth affiliate near you. LEARN TO HAND WASH AND SPOT CLEAN

The ultimate method for cleaning our clothes is to DIY. How often do we clean the entire dress when we’ve spilt just a drop of tea? Or left a couple of afternoon pick-me-up chocolate crumbs? With a ton of guides online and trustworthy how-tos, it’s time we revisited the age of doing things simply with homegrown solutions. Generally, all it takes is a little time, detergent and a dash of water. For trickier stains like blood, coffee, ink and wine, turn to old mate Google.

Let’s get this straight: dry cleaning is not the water-saving, earth-positive washing method some of us have been led to believe. Very naively, I had long thought dry cleaning was a good thing. Not only would it make me feel like a responsible grown-up (who actually reads the care label), but I also believed I was saving some precious water. But here’s the truth: dry cleaning, generally speaking, really sucks. If you care about the

environment – or people for that matter – say goodbye to your regular dry cleaners’ trip. While dry cleaning may be a waterless form of washing, toxic chemical solvents take its place. Our clothing is chucked in an industrial washing machine, chemically cleaned, then drained and dried. This devilish solvent is commonly known

While sustainable labels like Reformation still mark clothing ‘dry clean only’ – a contradiction I can’t quite understand – the care factor is ultimately our decision. So, make your choice a conscious one. Seek out your local green alternative or teach yourself a new skill. Join the chemical-free clothing revolution and make your wardrobe match your organic #pantrygoals.

The last year has seen the meteoric rise of the chunky sneaker. No longer reserved for your dad, the ’90s throwback style is here to stay – and we’re not sad about it. If you grew up in the formative years of Britney and Christina, you’d be familiar with (or probably wore) the Skechers Energy, a style made prominent by icons of the era. Fast forward to 2018, and the D’Lites are the revamped version of the Energy, updated to be lighter and sleeker. The new silhouette’s

already dominating, reasserting its position at fashion weeks, on influencers and in street style galleries worldwide. In light of this resurgence, we thought we’d take the Skechers D’Lites for a spin, testing out the chunky shoe of the moment to see what all the hype is about.

The D’Lites are available in four colourways: Bright Blossoms (white with floral detailing), Latest Trend (white or black with cute ribbons) and Biggest Fan (in soft baby blue) and retail for $119.95.

Mr. Boho

VKC Melbourne

Born in 2013, Spanish label Mr. Boho is the brainchild of a creative team who thought they could make a mark on the fashion industry. Their aim was to fill a gap in the market for eccentric, brightly-coloured watches and sunglasses. And they’ve done just that. Having just become available in Australia, Mr. Boho’s offering spans a bold array of metallic and acetate watches with Japanese Quartz or Miyota movements. The brand’s sunglasses are handmade in Italy, come with a protective carry case and feature UV400 protection. To stock up on accessories, shop the label at Branched.

If you’re looking for a bag that’s both practical and stylish, you’ve come to the right place. VKC Melbourne’s current collection takes the humble drawstring backpack and reimagines it in both soft and textured Italian leather. All pieces are designed and handcrafted by local artisans, who handle everything right down to the hand-stitched final touches. When it comes to colour palette, there are two ranges to choose from, both inspired by the urban environment and contemporary forms. Earth is made up of neutral autumnal tones, while Flash features bolder hues.

Ottway Founded on the Victorian coastline, Ottway specialises in unisex shirts to be worn for years to come. Its founders Neri and Manu conceptualised the label after a move from Spain to Australia, inspired by a love of travel and vintage clothing. Making a conscious move away from fast fashion, the brand creates pieces to be handed down from one generation to another. Its first collection, Nativo, features three shirt designs, each with their own story to tell. Everything comes in limited runs, using premium quality cotton that’s made to last for all of life’s different journeys. OTTWAYTHELABEL.COM

Genkstasy

Velvet Canyon

Genkstasy is a non-binary streetwear label influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Founder Evie Willsteed was inspired to create the brand after realising it was time for ungendered street style to make its mark on the fashion industry. Expect locally-made clothes from sustainably sourced fabrics, designed for both wearability and statement style. Having seen the isolation many suffer from perceived ‘difference’, the label is creating a community to bring joy, colour and connectedness to people’s lives. The new range is a collection of tees, shorts, skirts and overalls that plays with the balance between light and dark. It’s all available now for pre-order.

When shopping for new sunnies, it’s important to invest in a pair that will stand the test of time. With this philosophy in mind, sisters Bec Nolan and Cass Moase, and photographer Ali Mitton founded Velvet Canyon. The label creates dreamy eyewear with a timeless aesthetic, with styles inspired by the trio’s penchant for vintage frames. Pieces are constructed from Italian acetate and come complete with custom-tinted lenses and champagne-coloured detailing. The final touch arrives in the form of a cruelty-free, vegan leather pouch to keep your new shades safe and sound. VELVETCANYON.COM

Mavasi It isn’t practical to restock your wardrobe whenever you’re not feeling your look. We’re firm believers that a good accessory can reinvent any outfit, and Sydney-based label Mavasi is on our radar for that reason. Founded by four young designers, the brand’s initial collection offers a pure silk scarf in 12 hand-painted designs. Created to be a versatile piece that can elevate any outfit, each can be worn in a number of ways – around your neck, wrist, waist, in your hair or as a bandana. With the plan to expand Mavasi’s offering one perfected product at a time, it’ll be worth keeping track of the brand via @mavasi_official on Instagram. MAVASI.COM

Victoria Row Melbourne-based Victoria Brockett began designing shoes in early 2017, after she recognised a gap in the Australian market for high fashion footwear at attainable prices. She then joined forces with Effa Badarudin (ex Tony Bianco) and Victoria Row was born. The label officially launched in February, specialising in designs that focus on unique colourways, materials and premium quality. To support slow fashion and ensure exclusivity, each style is available in strictly limited quantities. Taking inspiration from the polished looks of Amal Clooney and Olivia Palermo, Victoria Row creates shoes you’ll be proud to wear day in, day out. VICTORIA-ROW.COM

Katie Rose Jewellery If you believe jewellery should be personal and meaningful, designs from New Zealand-born Katie Rose are sure to resonate. Katie draws on her training as a goldsmith to craft both fine and fashion jewellery, with each piece lovingly handmade in her studio on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. To bring the delicate creations to life, traditional jewellery-making techniques are combined with contemporary design elements. And because Katie believes that jewellery should be an extension of one’s self, there’s also the option to work with her to create custom-made pieces. Should you need further encouragement to treat yourself, all pieces are proudly made with conflict-free metals and gemstones. KATIEROSEJEWELLERY.COM

Bold hues are having a big moment in beauty. For makeup that instantly elevates your look, opt for bright colours and unconventional designs. To help you step out of your comfort zone, we quizzed makeup artist Veronika Moreira on how she achieves the perfect statement look.

For those who usually keep their look pretty neutral, what’s the key to using colour? Start small and with something familiar, like eyeliner, a bold lip or bright eyeshadow. Keep everything else minimal for maximum impact. What products do you use? It depends on the look and wear I want to achieve. But I love the Makeup Forever Aqua XL Color Paint range – you can blend it out as an eyeshadow or do some amazing linear/block work with it. The bonus is it won’t budge. How do you ensure it all stays in place? You won’t have any issues with colours moving with the Aqua XL Color Paint. If you’re using

creams, powder will help to set them in place. I find looking for longwear products is the best option. Is there anything that should be avoided? Unless you are going to be on top of touch-ups, try to avoid anything too glossy on the lids. Mixing glossy colours on the eyes can be high maintenance as the colour will shift in the creases.

What are the best tools to use? You’ll want a small, synthetic foundation brush to apply the colour. Any final tips? Don’t over think it! Swoop colour back and forth across the eye for an uneven paintbrush effect.

Should we be picking hues based on our eye colour? Green eyes look amazing with purple and rose golds, while brown eyes look great with greens, blues and copper bronze tones. Blue eyes suit coral, peaches and bronze golds. But when it comes to statement makeup, wear what you like.

La Roche-Posay La Roche-Posay has released an updated Effaclar Duo (+) formula, to provide fast improvements to blemishes and acne-covered skin. Designed to target severe imperfections and acne recurrence, the cream promises visible results in 12 hours. It does so thanks to an innovative prebiotic ingredient to help stimulate skin immunity and modulate inflammation, as well as zinc to reduce sebum secretion. And while acne improvement is a big claim to make, after getting our hands on a tube, we’re happy to attest to the results. ADOREBEAUTY.COM.AU

The House on Half Moon Street

When Life Gives You Lululemons

The Art of Living Alone & Loving it

ALEX REEVE

LAUREN WEISBERGER

JANE MATHEWS

In a world saturated with crime fiction, The House on Half Moon Street manages to stand out without feeling clichéd. Set in Victorian-era London, the story charts new territory for the crime genre by following a transgender protagonist in their bid to solve a murder-mystery. It presents a refreshing narrative with twists evident in every chapter; just when you think you’ve solved it, Alex Reeve proves you wrong. The book provides a gripping take on all of the ugly parts of our world, which is even more impressive when you consider this is Reeve’s novel debut. I’ll be waiting patiently for his next release.

As someone who lives in a share house, I didn’t realise there was an art to living alone. It turns out this was a pretty ignorant view, and I was quickly proven wrong when I picked up Jane Mathews’ book. Challenges like cooking for one, organising a holiday and living in a society that views soloists as failures are things I’d never considered. The Art of Living Alone & Loving it is like a map to a more content life on your own, covering off every aspect including relationships, health, home, finance and more. Frankly, it shows how living solo can open up opportunities rather than shut them down, acting as an effective toolkit for a happy life.

BEBE REXHA

KANYE WEST

TT

You mightn’t have heard of Bebe Rexha – or more likely, you’ve seen her wandering around the MTV Awards and wondered: ‘who the hell is that?’ Rexha, like Sia, is probably best known for her songwriting, having co-written Eminem and Rihanna’s Grammy-winning track ‘The Monster’, as well as penning songs for Selena Gomez, David Guetta and more. On her debut solo album, those talents are on show, resulting in a fairly solid pop lineup that’s made for radio play. Standouts you’re sure to hear on high rotation include the Gaga-like ‘I’m A Mess’ and the catchy ‘I Got You’. The only criticism I could level on this record is that it would have been stronger as a 10-track.

58

Let me preface this by saying I was a The Devil Wears Prada addict in my earlier years. I read the book 100 times, rented the movie from Video Ezy every weekend and eagerly awaited each impending release from Weisberger. In 2018, we’ve been given another look into the world of Miranda Priestly (sort of). This time around, the story follows Emily Charlton, the evil-turnedgood mentor of Andy Sachs. While the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada felt lacklustre, this release is a punchy follow-up that signals Weisberger’s return to form. Proving she’s not a one-hit wonder author after all, Weisberger has officially restored my faith in The Devil Wears Prada spin-offs.

On ye, it’s clear that Kanye is clearing out his demons, and here he chooses to embrace his flaws, rather than atone for them. Kanye is owning his well-documented rants. He tells us that it’s in fact what makes him stronger, rapping ‘that’s my bipolar shit, what / that’s my superpower / ain’t no disability / I’m a superhero’. And based on the amount of attention he courts from his outspoken and often erratic behaviour on Twitter, it’s probably not entirely untrue. As an album, more importantly, the seven-track quickie is solid Kanye and well worth a spin. Unfortunately it doesn’t feel like a stand-alone offering, but instead like a side B lifted from the offcuts of The Life of Pablo. Although that’s not entirely a bad thing.

If Theresa Wayman’s band Warpaint is all guitar rock and eerie psych harmonies, then her debut solo outing would be its spacey, surf-rock sister. It’s not that far from Warpaint’s work – albeit with more of that dirty keyboard flavour and an ever-so-subtle jungle-drum beat. Her songs speak of longing and love, sometimes broken and sometimes apathetic, but this doesn’t feel like a set of love songs. Rather, LoveLaws is strangely hypnotic, delivering a complex soundscape that is somehow never fussy. It’s uplifting in its own way; a romantic ode to introspection that tells us a lot about this talented now-solo artist. Definitely worth a listen.
