While dressing like Steve Jobs or your father in the ’80s may seem a little counter-intuitive, if done right you can be straight on your way to sartorial success (and comfort, of course). The New Balance MADE 990 is one of the most iconic ‘Dad Sneakers’ there is. First released in 1982 as a performance shoe, the style has been around for over three decades and represents

the best quality, craftsmanship and performance the brand has to offer. Worn by everyone from politicians to sneaker connoisseurs and social influencers, the 990 is as culturally relevant now as it was in the ’80s. With the relaunch of the 990v4 this month, we grabbed a few pairs and put our own fashionable spin on the legendary silhouette.

MUSIC

From the Heart WORDS BY TARA SMITH

exciting, you know? I mean, everyone wants to find their next incarnation, right? You also worked with Skrillex on this album, how did that come about? I was hanging out at his house one night, and he showed me something he was working on… and I was like ‘this is good.’ I started singing along to it and he just hit record on his laptop. We were literally just hanging out in his lounge and building this little beat. I asked if I could take it home and mess with it and it just kind of continued developing. [Skrillex] is great. I mean, I was kind of surprised that we were so productive; I would never have guessed that me and him would [work], it just doesn’t seem like a likely collaboration. But I guess if you hit it off with someone and you have a good energy, something’s probably going to happen. You have a huge fan base here. Even though you’re a New Zealander based in the US, I feel like Australia has claimed you as our own. (Laughs) I feel incredibly honoured that Australia has always been supportive. I think it’s just been incredible for my confidence, for my career. It was the first place for my first record; it was the place where I had my first step into the music industry. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Kimbra. The New Zealand expat first appeared on our radar way back in 2011, following the release of her debut studio album Vows. We were introduced to hits like ‘Cameo Lover’ and ‘Warrior’ around the same time ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ received its first play on radio. One billion YouTube views, a feature on The Sims soundtrack (which she recorded in Simlish) and an ARIA award for best female artist later, we’re on the cusp of Kimbra’s third album. If her past achievements are anything to go by, Primal Heart promises to deliver a dignified revival of the Kimbra we’ve come to know and love. Just before she kicks off on a US tour, we caught up with the artist to chat four years of songwriting, working with Skrillex and rumours of an Australian tour. Welcome back Kimbra, what have you been up to the last couple of years? Well, where to start? I’ve gone to Ethiopia twice in the time of this record – I’ve done a lot of personal travel. I’ve moved my life from LA to New York. I stopped off in crazy little towns across America and built my own studio with my own collection of synths and drum machines. You know,

20

I’ve grown a lot as a producer, a beat-maker; I’ve been studying a craft… I’ve collaborated with a bunch of different artists, trying to find what I want to say next to the world, and it does take time. Can you tell us how Primal Heart differs to 2014’s The Golden Echo? Every time I make an album, it’s somewhat a reaction of where I’ve been before. So, The Golden Echo is my playground album where I could really try out so many things and explore so many sounds and work with so many people. I think when it came to Primal Heart, I wanted to simplify things a bit more and find a more direct way of reaching people, and speak truly from my heart without decorating things too much… I think Primal Heart is this very internal and rooted experience of what it means to be human. What was it like working with producer John Congleton? When I first met [John] I knew he was going to challenge me. He was very strong about helping me unveil a boldness that he didn’t think I had necessarily fully discovered on previous records. So that was

I’ve got to ask… what happens when you hear ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ now? It brings up a lot of beautiful memories for me. It brings back memories of performing it with [Gotye] all across the world. It brings up memories of how serendipitous the whole thing was, because I was just a fan of Gotye for years. And I do believe things happens for a reason, but I don’t know, I just kind of smile to myself thinking ‘wow, wasn’t that a beautiful, crazy thing?’ When are you coming back to Australia? Australia is very high on everyone’s priority list and as I said, it’s the place where I consider my first fan base. I want to get back there very soon, and I imagine in the later half of the year it will start getting scheduled in. I can’t confirm anything just yet, but I hope very soon.

Well Worn ON SUCCESSFUL SHOPPING

Try on a few fits and sizes in store if possible, as both can vary across brands. If you’re shopping for a rigid pair of jeans, or one with a high composition of cotton, remember the jeans will expand when you wear them. Consider buying a size smaller or a pair that’s a super snug fit to ensure they break in the way you want them to. If you find the denim needs a bit more stretch once you’re home, you can also wash and tug the damp denim in tight areas. Lunges and squats while you’re wearing the jeans can also do the trick. ON HOW TO WEAR

The mom jean: For an easy daytime look, pair mom jeans in that perfect ’90s light blue wash with a tiny tee or bodysuit. Think off-duty Bella Hadid. The kick flare: For a more sophisticated outfit, you can’t go past the kick flare. With the cropped hem and ankle exposed, kick flares really show your footwear, whether a killer pair of heels or a trainer. The black skinny: A must-have for the denim wardrobe. Can be worn any day, in any way. ON WEARING WHITE

We know first-hand that shopping for denim can be a tricky task. With multiple styles, sizes, cuts and fabrications to navigate, it pays to know where to look and what to look for. No one knows denim better than senior womenswear buyer for General Pants Co., Britt Gallagher. So of course, we decided to pick her brain. ON THIS SEASON’S TRENDS

The overarching trend this winter is vintage denim inspiration. The mom jean arrived last winter to huge success, so a lot of the new fits we’re seeing are an extension of this look. Some of these include the skinny-straight jean, which has a similar rise to the mom jean but with a slimmer leg (think ’90s Cindy Crawford). We’re also seeing really fun fits with kick flares, wide flares and a looser wide leg. ON WHAT TO BUY

The majority of vintage-inspired pieces come in rigid denim. Rigid denim is 100 per cent cotton, woven into a tougher, heavier-weight fabric. This denim base has an open yarn which creates a stony

character when the fabric is washed and worn, giving the jeans that hard-to-find vintage look. If you’re looking for a skinny jean with more stretch, keep an eye out for vintage-inspired washes and details. Key features are authentic indigo rinses and visible aged character, such as whiskering, stone washing, sandblasting and deconstruction. ON WHAT TO PAY

There are some great jeans around at quality price points. Dr Denim is one brand, for example, that has a huge mix of denim made from organic cottons. As an international brand it’s able to offer competitive prices due to the volume it sells. Some jeans have gone through a huge amount of work, with hand-detailing and many washes to achieve a look, and therefore prices can vary drastically. In saying that, jeans are one item that can be worn for years and years. My personal favorite justification is thinking of the ‘cost per wear’, which always ends up being very cheap.

White jeans can really bring an outfit to life, especially on a dreary winter’s day. In saying that, be sure to check the weight of the denim – anything too light may end up being a little transparent. To be sure, check the inside tag. Generally denim with a larger composition of cotton will be a safer bet. My other personal rule would be to avoid the red wine! ON THE GREAT WASH DEBATE

Generally your jeans shouldn’t be washed too often. Most are designed and pre-washed to achieve their look. Keep this in mind, as washing can alter the look of your jeans. An easy way to keep jeans clean and fresh between washes is to air them outside or hang in the bathroom before a shower, as the steam will freshen them up. When it does come time to wash, the best way is to turn jeans inside out and use cold water to prevent fade. We all want to help the environment, so avoid putting them in the dryer. Instead, hang on the line and air-dry, as this will help to protect the shape and wash of the jeans.

Make Change Denimsmith Australia’s capital of burgeoning designers and underground creativity has also set the bar for sustainable denim. Melbourne-based Denimsmith (located in Brunswick East), embraces the vibrancy of local culture and stitches it into something oh-so-wearable. The premium indigo denim, sourced from Japan, is lovingly transformed by local makers. Each distressed, ripped knee is carefully sanded by hand, adding an individual touch in our massproduced world. And with such a variety of styles – from cropped to wide-legged; skinny to boyfriend – there’s no doubt we can all find a pair to suit our equally unique bods. Grab a matching jacket while you’re there to give the Canadians a run for their money. And if you’re on the hunt for a date idea outside of bland dinner and drinks, head to Denimsmith to observe the factory in action. Witness how your favourite piece of clothing came to be. The brand also offers a free hemming service to those who visit (an absolute godsend for all the short-legged peeps out there). Perfect jeans = found. DENIMSMITH.COM.AU

Nobody Denim WORDS BY HANNAH COLE ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

Some food for thought: jeans could be the most sustainable piece of clothing in your wardrobe. Think about it. They’re wearable throughout the seasons, you can dress them up or down according to the situation, and they’re basically everlasting. Unlike mini bags and revamped DHL T-shirts, jeans will never go out of style. Why not level up your next denim purchase by choosing from one of the local options below? These are labels with heart, inspiring sustainable practices and ethical manufacturing.

Outland Denim Outland Denim, a label based near Brisbane, truly marks a new standard in transparency. Online, one can read in detail each step of the denim process, from inception to finish. No stones are left unturned, and no aspect is hidden. It’s a brand with people at the centre. After seeing the impact of sex slavery in Asia, the

26

label was born. In support of the anti-trafficking movement, women are offered rehabilitation and a sustainable career path. Outland’s factory is set up in Cambodia where, alongside learning sewing skills, the staff are also taught English and personal development. It’s about breaking the cycle of exploitation and poverty, creating a future for the affected and setting them up on their own two feet. As if that isn’t enough to win you over, Outland also profoundly values the earth. The brand has searched for the most sustainable raw material options for each piece of practical denim fodder. Everything is considered: from the selection of zippers and thread, to the stamping and recycled packaging. I’ve never met a do-gooder I’ve loved more. OUTLANDDENIM.COM.AU

Nobody is the child prodigy of local denim, having made its way across the globe. As arguably our most mature denim offering (founded in 1999) it’s put in the time and effort to get things right. The status is not without great merit though. The Fitzroy-based brand (hello Melbourne, again) is built on the ideals of transparency and honesty across the business. Nobody aims to use the best sustainable materials and ensures ethical labour practices. Each denim goodie is manufactured in Australia, protecting local jobs and efficiently adapting to our ever-changing wants and demands. Nobody is your cool older cousin with the endless wardrobe and generous heart (the one I always wished I had). The brand makes it even easier to wear denim – in double, triple or even quadruple quantities if you like. All occasions, all bodies, covered. NOBODYDENIM.COM

Looking a little closer to home helps make these already super sustainable staples an even better, responsible buy. Support the local industry and reject harmful shipping emissions (and those ridiculous costs); saving your wallet and the world, one purchase at a time.

INTERVIEW

The Perfect Fit

Chatting sustainability, innovation and denim manufacturing with Tri Colour Federation. Having launched just this month, Tri Colour Federation is the newest addition to the local denim scene. The brand takes a unique approach, aiming to bring about environmental change and awareness through its message and manufacturing processes. During childhood trips to Thredbo, founder Josh Norbury became interested in the fragile balance that exists between humans and the natural world. It was at this time he also discovered the Corroboree frog, whose unique black and yellow markings would go onto inspire the brand’s logo, name and colour palette. We spent some time with Josh to find out what sets Tri Colour Federation apart from other denim brands.

28

What inspired you to start the brand? I want to design beautiful Australian-made clothing that gives you the fit, quality and style you've been missing out on. Equally, I am inspired to clean up the waste. There is so much unnecessary waste across all areas of the industry. As a family-operated business, our mission is to undertake this social responsibility. And collectively, you and I are going to look and feel good doing it. Why did you choose the Corroboree frog for your brand logo? The Corroboree frog is uniquely Australian. It averages 2.5cm in size and is cloaked in vivid yellow and black patterns to ward off predators – every frog’s mark is unique, just like you

and I. The rarest of the bunch have splashes of alpine blue streaked across their bodies creating a beautiful tri colour pattern. Unfortunately, the species has been decimated by disease and climate change. As a result, the amphibian is endangered with a population that numbers fewer than 100. As we establish the brand, we plan to donate a percentage of our annual turnover towards Zoos Victoria. How have you ensured the perfect fit? Tri Colour Federation has utilised industry experience and technological advances to create the perfect fit. Our senior pattern maker has over 40 years’ experience and is recognised in the Australian Fashion Hall of Fame.

INTERVIEW

Collectively, we’ve spent a year developing and trialling this pattern through multiple wear tests and fit models to ensure a universal fit, which suits any body shape. The psychological effect for a customer who puts our jeans on is an immediate sense of relief that they have a pair of jeans that fits, breathes and moves functionally in unison with them. Our denim selection has a composition of elastane, which allows for a lot of stretch. Yet at the same time, the denim’s outer layer is course, ensuring quality and longevity. You utilise Stretch Reformation Technology. Can you tell us a little about it? Stretch Reformation Technology is very clever. Not only does it ensure a perfect fit, moulding around the body, but it also provides superior comfort. SRT was developed by our partners ISKO (the world’s largest producer of denim) for the sole purpose of providing a more sustainable solution and a better fit. SRT reduces water consumption, electricity and detergent and ensures that the elastane never loses its retention. Therefore, the need to wash the jean regularly for shrinking isn’t necessary. Why is environmentally-friendly production so important to you as a brand? Our world is changing every day. The fish we eat contain traces of plastic. The air we breathe is toxic. Animals are dying out. The list goes on. It’s no longer a need to reverse the cycle, but an obligation. There’s a garbage patch in every ocean on earth, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains six times more plastic than plankton and it’s twice the size of Texas. We want to do our part and contribute to the restoration of the planet to ensure that there is something left for generations to come. Tell us a little more about your unique fabrication. Along with our organic cotton that uses very little water, next to no chemicals and produces less waste, our recycled polyester is no different. Sourced from recycled PET plastic bottles, our mission is to reduce the amount of waste being dumped into the earth. What’s next for Tri Colour Federation? We are currently preparing our next range. It will feature a broader selection of colours and styles that incorporate our unique block fit. Tri Colour Federation is also working closely with ISKO on a new denim construction that will push the boundaries of sustainability further. Above all else, we are looking forward to building a customer base of like-minded people who can enjoy the brand and be apart of the solution.

Colours By Liz

Tluxe

If you’re in the market for statement jewellery, you can’t go past Colours By Liz. The Sydney-based label is the creation of Elizabeth Heng, who started selling her handmade designs after realising she was making more jewellery than she could possibly wear. With a self-described addiction to polymer clay, Liz hand-creates vibrant earrings in a rainbow of colours, before packaging and marketing everything on her own. You’ll find styles spanning studs, hoops and tasseled drops, meaning there’s something for every taste and occasion.

If you agree that garments should transcend fashion to form a part of your identity, Tluxe is a label to have on your radar. The brand’s line of luxurious basics has been thoughtfully created and made in Sydney, from organic and sustainable fabrics which are designed to stand the test of time. Think Tencel, bamboo, organic cotton, linen, cashmere, silk and merino wool. The result is beautifully-produced investment pieces that are functional, luxurious and refined, ready to wear for years to come.

FinerRings Two things immediately come to mind when encountering FinerRings. Firstly, how delicate and minimal the label’s designs are, and secondly, how affordable each piece is. Crafting with highquality 14 karat gold fill, sterling silver and rose gold, designer Taiba Ash produces her pieces by hand in Melbourne. Available online and at pop-ups around the city, you’ll find hammered stacking rings, fine hoop earrings and delicate layering necklaces. The jewellery has been designed to be worn everyday, so you can rest assured there’s no risk of turning your skin green, tarnishing or the colour fading. Simply Alfie

WhiteLightly

Simply Alfie specialises in the unique and handcrafted. Founder Anthea Fraser began her label after realising she could create her own jewellery instead of purchasing it. Her range spans colourful designs across geometric drops, tear-shaped studs, polymer clay necklaces and more. Fraser produces her exclusive collection using alcohol inks on synthetic paper, before sealing each piece in resin. The use of these materials means that no two products are ever the same, with varying colours, shapes and textures. Simply Alfie will next exhibit at Daylesford’s Sisters’ Market in May.

WhiteLightly emphasises the simple beauty of gemstones in their natural form. Its range of earrings is handmade entirely in Melbourne by Jane Fenn. You can expect semi-precious stones like rose quartz, moonstone and golden calcite across the collection, each chosen for their reflective properties. For added personality, the label also uses lesser known minerals like fluorite and pyrite. Due to the nature of the earth they come from, each WhiteLightly piece is truly unique. View the range in person at Melbourne’s Markit @ FedSquare on April 22.

Mulla Mulla Designs

Molly Coombs Marr

Helen Ansell and Peta Riley are the duo behind Mulla Mulla Designs, a collaborative team designing lively patterns and homewares. The range is hand-painted and digitally-rendered, then transformed into keepsakes that will brighten your living space. Think along the lines of greeting cards, prints, scarves, picnic rugs, tea towels, coasters and more, inspired by native Australian flora and fauna. Ansell and Riley also spread their creativity by delivering community engagement programs to regional artists and art centres. Mulla Mulla Designs is available to shop through Etsy.

Designing jewellery that captures our national identity is no easy task, but Molly Coombs Marr has nailed it. The artist began her namesake label after a childhood spent surrounded by Mem Fox, rainbow Paddle Pops and Ken Done art. She perfectly demonstrates a nostalgic view of our sunburnt country through brightly-coloured earrings and brooches. Expect a range including Bubble O’ Bill earrings, magpie studs and fairy bread pieces. Influenced by a love of wearable art and the local landscape, Molly’s designs explore what it really means to be Australian.

Collective Closets

B. Scarce

Based in Fitzroy, Collective Closets blends Melbourne’s penchant for deconstructed silhouettes with the wild, deregulated aesthetics of modern African fashion. The label was founded by African-born, Melbourne-raised sisters Fatuma and Laurinda Ndenzako, who manufacture their garments locally while sourcing fabrics from Africa. You can expect pieces which combine traditional tribal weaving, batik prints and tones of forest green and black. Working hard to keep their brand socially conscious, the sisters have partnered with ANPPCAN to bring attention to the horrors of child trafficking in Kenya.

B. Scarce is a contemporary jewellery label for the young and young at heart. Its colourful offering is inspired by ’80s and ’90s pop culture, and is carefully handmade in Melbourne. Designer Bridie Scarce works with acrylics to create earrings with pink glitter lightning bolts, heart-shaped drops, flamingos and more. The lively collection is 100 per cent nickel free, and also appears alongside a select range of mixed media prints. You can catch B. Scarce at Fitzroy’s Rose Street Market or online. Limb the Label Melbourne label Limb has quickly become a local favourite. Committed to fashion with a social conscience, the brand’s founders Andria and Sinead ensure their supply chain is as transparent as possible. This means producing everything locally, with patternmaking and sampling done in a small studio behind their Fitzroy boutique. Head in-store to check out the AW18 collection which includes wide-leg pants, roll-neck jumpers and button-up jackets in a palette of red brick, tan, black and blue. If you’re not in Melbourne, you can access the full range online. LIMBTHELABEL.COM

HAIR & BEAUTY

Set in Stone Admittedly, we can be a little lazy when it comes to makeup application. If we commit to putting foundation on, we sure as hell don’t want to waste any more time touching it up throughout the day. To help keep everything in place for as long as possible, we put five setting powders under the microscope.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder FROM MECCA.COM.AU (OUT MAY) PRICE $67

While you can’t fault the look of Hourglass’ setting powder, it definitely doesn't have the best dispenser. The holes are so fine that it’s hard to get product on your brush, but big enough that product still spills when you first open it. Once on however, the product performs well, with an undetectable finish that sits in place for hours. I’ll be reaching for this product again. RATING 4/5

Becca Soft Light Blurring Powder FROM SEPHORA.COM.AU PRICE $65

Becca’s Soft Light Blurring Powder has become an essential in my makeup kit. Its finely milled powder smoothes and evens skin tone, without settling into fine lines or looking cakey. Plus, it doesn’t dry my skin out, and extends the longevity of makeup tenfold. Unfortunately, the product loses points for its disastrous packaging, which results in golden powder dusting my entire makeup collection and bathroom.

Mecca Max Banana Bake Skin Filter Loose Powder

Atelier Make-Up PLHD High Def. Setting Powder

FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $24

FROM ATELIERMAKEUP.COM.AU PRICE $55

After the cult status of Mecca’s Banana Bake in pressed form, I was eager to try its highly-anticipated loose powder sibling. The yellow-toned formula promises to correct, filter and brighten complexion, and it delivers on all fronts. Its matte finish blurs imperfections without drying up my base, while the pleasant-smelling powder is easy to apply. Even as a self-professed baking rookie, I’m able to dust on the lightweight product with confidence.

Atelier’s powder does what it should, ensuring the longevity of foundation and reducing oily shine. But be warned, this ‘translucent’ product does result in lighter-looking foundation, which can be particularly annoying if you’ve just spent 10 minutes blending your base. Despite needing to use it alongside some extra bronzer, it’s a solid choice that’ll keep your makeup on all day. RATING 3.5/5

MAC Cosmetics Set Powder FROM MACCOSMETICS.COM.AU PRICE $54

If you’ve got skin that errs on the oily side, then you’re bound to love this product. If you’re skin is dehydrated however, I’d steer clear. With a matte finish, MAC’s Set Powder does ensure the longevity of makeup but can be drying. If you’re going to be in front of a camera after use, approach with caution. It can have a bit of flashback. RATING 3.5/5

Napoleon Perdis Napoleon Perdis’ Total Bae line is commanding our attention with its newest release of lip wear. The Patrol It Lip Squad includes a creamy lipliner with built-in sharpener, a high shine lip-gloss and matching matte lipstick. Arriving in camo packaging and available in two colour-rich shades, the paraben-free range gets a salute from us. NAPOLEONPERDIS.COM

3INA 3INA has released a capsule with London-based designer, Clio Peppiatt. The Just For Fun collection is a makeup debut for Peppiatt, inspired by Y2K fever and an early ’00s aesthetic. Expect cool pastels, hyper-saturated shades and frosted finishes straight from the days of Britney and Christina. The playful range features a pearlescent highlighter, an eyeshadow palette, two shades of longwear lipstick and a 2-in-1 eyeliner pen. 3INA.COM

Mecca Max Following the success of its Banana Bake Skin Filter, Mecca Max has dropped a whole banana-inspired collection. The a-peeling release features three new products – a Blurring Setting Spray, Setting Brush and a loose powder version of the bestselling pressed powder. The products are designed to work together to create dimension, neutralise discolouration and keep your concealer and foundation in check all day.

The highly-anticipated second product from Sand & Sky has arrived. Following the brand’s Porefining Face Mask – which attracted over half a million customers in its first year – is the Flash Perfection Exfoliating Treatment. Australian pink clay is once again the hero of the formula, acting as a magnet for toxins, impurities and pollution. Simply massage onto cleansed skin for 30 seconds, then leave for five minutes before washing off. The versatile product can be used all over, or as a spot treatment for dry patches. SANDANDSKY.COM

Look & Listen WITH VERONICA STANFORD AND BIANCA O'NEILL

14 Day Reset WELLECO X P.E NATION

Secrets of a Beauty Queen

Circe MADELINE MILLER

STEPHANIE DARLING

A wellness book is the natural next step for P.E Nation founder Pip Edwards, but don’t buy 14 Day Reset with the intention of finding a regimented meal and exercise plan. Instead, the release encourages readers to do one achievable movement per day. Accompanying each exercise is a recipe for a smoothie bowl, protein ball or drink, allowing you to insert some goodness into your daily routine without overhauling it completely. For time-poor people like myself, this handy e-book offers an achievable exercise regime which isn’t daunting or overwhelming in the slightest.

Primal Heart KIMBRA

Part-memoir, part-guidebook, Secrets of a Beauty Queen sees accomplished beauty journalist, Stephanie Darling, recount her years of firstclass travel, plastic surgery and work at the likes of Vogue. And while it’s undeniable she’s had an exciting career, it’s also one that’s likely to leave her out of touch with readers. With snippets like “if you look groomed and polished you will always have the first impression advantage,” the book comes off outdated. Admittedly, Darling is trying to present a not-too-serious look into the world of beauty, but it’s left me feeling disappointed that advice like hers is still valued in 2018.

Invasion of Privacy CARDI B

NZ songstress Kimbra has recently made the move from LA to NYC and in the writing of her third LP, she shows how this change in mindset has delivered a renewed songwriting perspective. This is evident in the single ‘Everybody Knows’ – a much more personal track, punctuated by a pared-back Kimbra in the accompanying video (no rainbow leotard in sight). Perhaps she’s growing up – after all, this album is less about escapism and more about claiming her stake in the industry. In ‘Top Of The World’, she channels Beyoncé’s ‘7/11’, and on 'Recovery' there’s an old school Natasha Bedingfield vibe. It all makes for enjoyable listening, while moving away from that punchy pop for which we know her so well.

54

After reality show fame, a bunch of mixtapes and guest spots culminating in the incredibly successful viral single ‘Bodak Yellow’, former stripper Cardi B delivers her first full-length rap album. There are plenty of single-ready tracks here to choose from. ‘Drip’ feat. Migos is a banger and ‘Money Bag’ is a killer new-money anthem. Mix those in with ‘Bartier Cardi’ plus the aforementioned ‘Bodak’, and you’re in for some solid listening. It’s an incredibly strong rap album. Sure, there are some derivative Nicki Minaj moments here, particularly in her intermittent trill, but name a male rapper who hasn’t nodded politely at those who came before him. At least she didn’t collab with David Guetta.

As an avid reader of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series growing up, Madeline Miller’s Circe was right up my alley. It follows the story of the exiled Circe – daughter of Titan and god of the sun Helios – who discovers her power in witchcraft. The beauty of Miller’s writing means you don’t need to have prior knowledge of Greek mythology before you begin reading. Both informative and enchanting, it’s a story of gods, titans, nymphs, monsters and magic, that isn’t too laden in fantasy. Expect to pick this one up and not put it down until you’ve hit the last page.

Awake ALISON WONDERLAND

DJ wunderkind Alison Wonderland returns with her new album Awake, following the huge success of her debut album Run three years ago. This time around Alex explores a more experimental space, preferring interesting listening over commerciality. But that’s not to say there aren’t any commercial tracks on here. ‘Easy’ and ‘Church’ have seen solid airplay, as different as they are. ‘Cry’ should also see some spins, especially with that calypso flavour delivering the chorus. There’s a lot of really interesting sound art on here too that proves her talent well. The album opens with a cello solo, which she plays herself, overlaid with Alex asking the audience, “is it good enough?”. According to this reviewer, yeah, it is.
