Decking the halls There’s been a lot of talk about how it’s too early to start celebrating Christmas. Blasphemy. We understand the importance of decoration shopping and getting at least three months’ worth of Michael Bublé carolling in.

Celebrating avo season If there’s one thing that makes October great, it’s surely that avocados are in season (according to the Coles catalogue, that is). Need we say more? Bargain hunting You probably already know we like any excuse to buy something new (this month we’re looking at new shoes). And, because we’re all about picking up a discount or two, FJ’s sales section is brimming with sample and warehouse sales ready for you to shop. Head to fashionjournal.com.au/sales to stay up to date. Trick-or-treating If you haven’t already guessed by our Christmas rant, we like holidays. And when said holiday revolves around chocolate and other sweets, you have our full commitment. See us get into the Halloween spirit on pg 46.

My name is… Zoe Beer I’m employee of the month because… we're running out of people in the office. My greatest achievement is… getting my pen licence in Japanese class before my general-life pen licence. My fave pizza is… anything with pineapple on it (controversial, I know). No one knows I... don't rate avo. The Disney character I’m most like is… Sharpay from High School Musical because… she's fabulous, but made some questionable style choices that hopefully everyone has forgotten. The worst thing I’ve ever worn was… hats. There was a hat phase, it was very long and very bad. The naughtiest thing I’ve ever done is… sneak into Rod Laver Arena at the Aus Open on a ground pass ticket.

National Gallery of Victoria Fashion and art is about to collide in the most beautiful way. In a world-first exhibition, designs from avant-garde fashion house, Viktor&Rolf, will be available to view at the National Gallery of Victoria. Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists will celebrate over 35 haute couture pieces from Dutch designers, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, along with a trip into the Viktor&Rolf archives. Colette by Colette Hayman

ALAS

You’ve got the dress, you’ve roped your friend into doing your makeup and you finally figured out how to curl your hair using a straightener. It’s time for accessories to complete your Spring Racing look. Colette by Colette Hayman is a good place to start, with the team looking to international catwalks and fashion capitals to deliver on-trend accessories that make a statement. Founded in Sydney by Colette Hayman, the brand’s offering spans need-it-now rings, statement necklaces, bracelets, handbags, headwear and clutches. With Colette’s message that every occasion is worth buying something new for, you’ve already justified that diamante choker. colettehayman.com.au

Local label ALAS has levelled up. Previously known for its top notch sustainable PJs, the sleepwear brand has just introduced two new lines: one daywear and one activewear. Aptly named Wake, Move, Sleep, the three drops cover all key phases of your day. They feature a wearable palette of black, charcoal, mustard and light blue, coupled with original prints. Even better, each line is made from a range of sustainable textiles like handwoven chambray, organic cotton and recycled PET polyester (that’s your old drink bottles, FYI). This gets a big tick from us. alasthelabel.com

Hugo Sheppard & Co After the success of its Melbourne store, Hugo Sheppard & Co has decided to take things interstate, opening up shop in Sydney’s Macquarie Centre. The boutique is home to a selection of shoes from labels like Beau Coops, Dept. of Finery and Zoe Kratzmann, meaning you’ll want to add it to your list of shopping spots. Not only does the new space feature the retailer’s most celebrated classics, it also stocks exclusive styles that aren’t available in its Melbourne counterpart. hugosheppard.com.au

Table of Plenty The use of good quality, healthy ingredients will make you want to add Table of Plenty to your next shopping list. The brand is keeping it real with a natural range of muesli, dukkahs, spice mixes and snacks, all made from wholesome ingredients and free from added nasties. Muesli options span Crunchy Fruit Free Nutty; Macadamia, Cranberry & Coconut; and gluten free Crunchy Chia. The brand also offers Mini Rice Cakes to take on the go, made with wholegrain rice and coated in Dark or Milk Chocolate, Triple Berry or Creamy Yoghurt. Yummy. Available at select Woolworths and Coles stores. tableofplenty.com.au

Birdie Cashmere Cashmere isn’t just for winter. Luxe cashmere label, Birdie, just introduced a hybrid activewear and lifestyle line for its SS16/17 range. It’s made using a unique cotton and cashmere blend to keep pieces lightweight, so you can – get this – wear cashmere at the gym. It also means you can rock around in your activewear all day without looking like a twat. It’s basically a game changer. The all-natural blend lets your skin breathe, while also absorbing excess moisture to keep you comfortable. Perfect for your mid-morning workout or 4pm session watching Judge Judy. birdiecashmere.com

Adele and Rose Adele and Rose is an Australian leather label to watch. Founded in 2014 by designers Adele Angeleri and Rosette Stringer, the label proudly produces high quality leather bags and accessories. A focus on sophistication sees the brand design its pieces with clean lines and complementary textures. Expect a range of colours, from black to cognac, in box bags, totes and bucket bags, all finished with a whole lot of gold hardware. It’s reasonably priced too, with the entire collection sitting between $169 and $349. With a new range dropping very soon, you’ll want to watch this space. adeleandrose.com

Diesel has just launched its Nite Sport collection and it’s just as you’d expect from the name. Taking cues from classic sportswear cuts and technical design, the drop sees a monochromatic palette across a heavily textural collection. Expect to see leather and calf hair as well as detailed finishes (hello press studs). Spanning T-shirts, dresses, sweatshirts, jackets and coats – embellished with a sports stripe motif – it’s pretty much the ultimate in transeasonal wear. diesel.com

Style Swap What Poppy's selling on Shedd Jeffrey Campbell boots I purchased them overseas because I didn’t have a pair of black boots with me. Turns out I never wore them and I had a similar pair back at home. Clover Canyon silk skirt This is one of those items you love, but has just been hanging in your closet unworn. I adore the print on this skirt, which is the one thing that made it so hard to part with. Christopher Kane dress I bought this on a recent trip to London, purely because Christopher Kane is one of my favourite designers. I didn’t even try it on! Bodycon really isn’t a shape I wear anymore. Every time I go to put it on, I end up taking it off. Vintage Christian Dior scarf I originally bought this as a gift for someone’s birthday and never ended up giving it to them! Le Specs sunnies I used to stock Le Specs in my store, so when we started doing our own line of sunglasses and stopped selling Le Specs, I was left with some stock (all of it unworn). Rebecca Minkoff bag The result of late night online shopping after a few glasses of wine.

You’ve heard us say it before: a change in season is the perfect excuse to update your wardrobe. Shedd is here to make sure you can do so without feeling guilty. The app has just launched in Australia and is setting out to eliminate wardrobe waste. It’s basically a marketplace in your pocket, where you can be both the buyer and the seller.

To join the fun, you just need to download the (free) app. To become a seller, take a pic of an item and add it to your digital wardrobe, along with a description and searchable hashtags. Once uploaded, your item will be shared with thousands of users. When someone buys your goods, you’ve got some cash to go shopping, which, let’s be honest, is the end goal. And while this all sounds pretty nifty, it’s not even the best part. There’s already a group of influencers (like accessories designer, Poppy Lissiman) using Shedd, so you can shop the wardrobes of the people you follow (ahem, stalk) on Instagram. We stole five minutes with Poppy to talk style and what you’ll find on her Shedd profile.

10

What attracted you to Shedd? Like with every season, styles come and go. As my style evolves and changes, items I previously loved may be able to be loved and worn by someone else. I’ve also recently relocated from Perth to Sydney, so I’ve had to downsize my wardrobe drastically. Describe your style in three words. Bright, left-of-centre and eye-catching. Any advice for successfully editing your wardrobe? Having done this just recently, I really had to think about what items someone else would love and get more use out of than me. I made a decision to cull anything that was ‘fast fashion’ and keep or sell pieces I thought people could love as much as I did.

Romance Was Born vest I’m obsessed with this print but have worked out I’m just not a vest kinda gal. Shedd is free to download and is available on iOS and Android

Favourite shopping destination? Probably Hong Kong. I’ve spent a lot of time there for work and have come across a few young, no label brands from China and Korea. They seem to be really in line with my own style. What’s the best second-hand item you’ve ever purchased? I recently bought a beautiful hand-stitched silk souvenir jacket from Japan. It has embroidery on the inside and outside. What’s the best style advice you’ve ever been given? I’m paraphrasing Iris Apfel here: you need to be comfortable in your own skin before you can be comfortable in your own clothes.

THE ROMANCE DIED @poppylissiman

SHEDD IT Anything less than perfection? SHEDD it. Fashion icons like Poppy Lissiman only do unique. And if it’s not pulling its weight in the closet, it’s snapped and snapped up. SHEDD is the ultimate app for selling your new and pre-loved style to the fashion savvy around you. Let your look evolve as your wardrobe revolves – buy it, wear it, SHEDD it!

Time out with Tkay

TKAY is out on October 28 via Universal Music tkaymaidza.com

She’s best known for her lyrical prowess and infectiously energetic sets (watch her play live and I guarantee you won’t spend a second standing still), but Tkay’s personal style is becoming just as recognisable as her eclectic beats. She wore vintage Lanvin to the BET awards (Google it) and regularly rocks designs by cool kids Emma Mulholland and Max Mollison.

Tkay Maidza is probably the coolest girl I know. I mean, there aren’t many 20-year-olds that can say they’ve collaborated with Martin Solveig, followed Beyoncé down the red carpet and dropped a mixtape while studying an architecture degree. But Tkay sure can. She’s only just made the transition from teenager to twenty-something, but already, this Zimbabwe-born, Adelaide-raised rapper has achieved an A+ in life. However, if you ask Tkay about her success, she’ll respond with zero fuss and heaps of humility. She might have won the world over with her charismatic charm and ability to drop banger after banger, but beneath the surface she’s navigating wardrobe malfunctions, career-related restlessness and hangovers, just like you and I. “I’ve realised that making music is like running a marathon,” she tells me, when I ask her to elaborate on the year that’s been 2016. “Actually, I’ve never run a marathon,” she adds, giggling, “but I think it would feel very similar.” When we speak, Tkay’s hanging out in Adelaide, “doing Pilates and seeing friends,” waiting for the next adventure to begin. She’s just returned home from playing a score of festivals in Europe and is about to pack her bags for America. I get the impression she keeps the world’s busiest schedule.

12

BY AMY CAMPBELL “When I played with Martin Solveig in Germany, the crowd was HUGE. It was a lot smaller when I played by myself… I realised afterwards I had the same time slot as Rihanna,” she says, laughing. “It was some pretty tough competition.” I ask whether playing the summer festival circuit felt like one giant, never-ending party. “Actually, I don’t really drink or party too hard,” she says. “I feel like I missed that point when I was young, where everyone else was going out drinking every weekend. I never did that, so now when I do, I immediately regret it.” “But playing overseas was incredible. I played a lot of shows and in my spare time I would just be a tourist. I basically did a lot of shopping,” she confesses, laughing again. “I kept finding all this cool stuff I wanted to buy!”

“I like performing in stuff that’s oversized,” she says, talking me through her on-stage outfits. “I just hate tight stuff. For me, it’s more about having fun than worrying about what I’m wearing. I spend most of my time on stage jumping around like crazy, I hate worrying about coming undone. It’s just irritating, you know?” Amen sister, I know. Placing a cherry on top of what’s been a pretty hectic year, is the upcoming release of Tkay’s debut album. Fittingly titled TKAY, it will be flanked by an Aussie tour. She says she began working on the album soon after dropping her first EP Switch Tape in 2014. But over the course of the last three years, things kept happening that made her want to change it. “I’d written a bunch of stuff, but I kept meeting new people who were able to help make the album better,” she explains. “I got a bit restless. Eventually I realised I wouldn’t end up using many of my earlier songs,” she laughs. “But I wasn’t really stressed. I was just like, ‘it will happen when it happens’.” And now it has. ‘Carry On’, the first-born single from TKAY, is the most jingly-jangly, feel-good tune currently going around. I’m not one to call things early, but I think it might just be the soundtrack of spring 2016. However, just like any young artist, Tkay says she’s nervous to see her first full-length body of work be released. “Sometimes I get really excited, other times I don’t want to show anyone,” she confesses. “I think I’m just nervous, so much of me went into making it.”

Build the foundation skills to create your own brand. Luke Portelli, Owner and Head Designer of streetwear label ‘Slum Royals’ (@slumroyals) is one of our second year students studying Fashion Design at the Karl von Busse Institute of Design. Luke started Slum Royals in 2014, relying on his own passion, skill and determination to get his brand up and running. Luke joined KvB a year later in order to develop his craft and expand his knowledge in design.

“I didn’t want to study again, I’ve never been one for institutional education... but I have definitely been given a great foundation which has aided my learning in a lot more creative fields than I first thought.” At KvB, we offer students practical, hands on classes, with assessment briefs that align with current industry trends to show students the process of developing a design from concept to product. Launched earlier this year, the jewellery label is all about simplicity. The maker behind the label, Claire Reid, handcrafts each piece in her Sydney studio. Her Etsy store is filled with fine 14k gold jewellery (and a selection of silver), embellished with geometric shapes, beads and other symbols. A Wild About Frank purchase means you’re investing in the finest materials and perfect craftsmanship, with absolutely no compromise on either. etsy.com/au/shop/wildaboutfrank

It’s time you met Tanu Vasu. The forward-thinking designer combines artisanal practice with innovative techniques, to create a selection of ready-to-wear and couture designs. Tanu works with laser cutting, 3D printing, heat-activated materials and textile manipulation. In contrast, she develops her designs through research of historical, musical and literary notions. The end result is clothing that elevates a traditional aesthetic to a highly modern status, with pieces both visually striking and interest-provoking (no, really). Tanu’s work currently focuses on womenswear, footwear and accessories, with menswear to come. tanuvasu.com

Taking inspiration from the likes of Chloé, Balmain and Saint Laurent, Kimberley Elle creates high-end wardrobe staples. Coupling clean and modern silhouettes with luxe finishes (like French seams), the local label creates thoughtful clothing at an affordable price point. Reflecting her own youthful and feminine style, designer Kimberley Eleanor’s latest collection is a pastel dream. A palette of lilac and blush pink is mixed with crisp white, delivering the ultimate summer-ready pieces. Oh, and did we mention each garment is named after lyrics from Taylor Swift songs? This label’s set to become your next obsession. kimberleyelle.com

Every Woman If fashion is one of society’s most revealing cultural touchstones, then it looks like we’re ready for change.

BY ANNIE CARROLL

Diversity in the fashion industry has been rightly scrutinised for its presence – or lack thereof – for years. Now it seems like the issue has hit peak public consciousness. We are responding to realness like never before. The proof is in the pudding, with global retailers like H&M and Uniqlo tapping a diverse range of talent for recent campaigns. But there’s been a crew of local labels celebrating the full spectrum of female beauty long before the high street cottoned on to the idea. Here are four of our faves.

Discount Universe Discount Universe is a bit like that cool friend you had in high school who had confidence from the get-go, while the rest of us insufferably tried to assimilate with the Supré army. Sported by stars such as Rihanna, Grimes and Beyoncé, the brand is known for its aggressive love of sequins and statement-making street style aesthetic. But the brand’s real influence lies in the way it actively embraces the weird, the unconventional, the young and the old. As long as you’ve got the spirit of the glitter daze, no rules apply. shop.discountuniverse.com.au

LONELY LINGERIE SPRING SUMMER CAMPAIGN

Hopeless Lingerie

Lonely

Sister Studios

Unapologetically sexy, the Hopeless Lingerie girl is on board with the art of seduction. Hell, she could’ve invented the art itself. With a femme fatale aesthetic, the Melbourne-based brand advocates body positivity across all channels. But particularly through its Instagram account, where you’ll find the dangerous curves of the female body celebrated in every form. It’d be almost impossible to wear Hopeless and not feel hot as hell. Oh, and did we mention they will custom make to any size? hopelesslingerie.com

NZ brand Lonely is the OG when it comes to championing women of all shapes and sizes. If ever there was proof that lacy, romantic lingerie is not restricted to the Lily Aldridge’s of the world, this is it. Lonely has shunned traditional marketing from the get-go, favouring a more natural approach via its Lonely Girls project – a direct line of communication with customers. In a world of airbrushed Angels, Lonely hooks you in with raw realness. Truth is beauty, you know? lonelylabel.com

The Sister Studios girl is both your role model and your best mate. She’s the kind of girl who can wear a powder blue jumpsuit and not think twice about it. And you want to get to know her better. Luckily, the brand is gaining traction with every new collection released. Focusing on a blend of wardrobe classics and seasonal injections of colour and cut, their most recent campaign features street cast models who prove you don’t need a tan and a six pack to make us feel all the goals. sisterstudios.com.au

FASHION + MUSIC

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL

FASHION IS FREEDOM

Katie Baron

Clementine Ford

Tala Raassi

We all know fashion and music are intrinsically linked (ahem, Kylie’s gold hotpants). But just how deep does this intersection of creative industries run? Very, apparently. Fashion + Music explores the interplay of these industries and their combined impact on pop culture. Which is huge, by the way. The book follows the lesser-known fashion creatives whose work has shaped pop culture, telling their stories through images of the most prolific pop icons. Think everyone from Boy George and Sex Pistols to Cher and Rihanna. It also considers these industries as both a sociopop-cultural barometer and leader in exploration of identity, feminism, gender and sexuality. Also, evidently, as a way to increase the sales of gold hotpants.

The first time I heard Clementine Ford’s name was during that Sunrise debacle. It was a modern David and Goliath story. An individual versus an influential national media outlet whose victimblaming was the public articulation of a widely held belief. And she made a difference. Clementine Ford changed public discourse – proof of the difference one voice can make. And with the release of Fight Like a Girl, Clementine Ford is seeking to raise many more voices. Through an all-too relatable series of anecdotes, Ford carefully articulates the female experience in a way that is as accurate as it is powerful. It’s a call to action but, more importantly, it’s a call to reason. A must read for all women.

Now a swimwear designer in the US, Tala Raassi grew up in Iran. At 16 years old, she went to a friend’s house; there were boys there and she was wearing a mini skirt. Because of this, Tala was sentenced to forty lashes with a leather-braided whip. This is only the beginning of Tala’s story – one that’s about more than just a girl who suffered at the hands of her government. Fashion is Freedom tells of a woman who remained steadfast in the face of adversity and oppression, and who held firmly to her beliefs of what is just and right. Her story is inspiring, not because of what she experienced but because of her rebellious spark, passion and conviction throughout.

WARRIORS

A SEAT AT THE TABLE

TKAY

Lisa Mitchell

Solange

Tkay Maidza

Working with producer Eric J (Chet Faker, Flume, The Rubens) was a master stroke for Mitchell’s third album. The combination of an edgier soundscape and her pretty, haunting vocals has delivered some really great work, particularly in the title track. Mitchell has said Warriors is a more personal album, reflecting on her younger years and conjuring up memories of youthful desires. There are wistful references to hearts running wild and riding in cars with boys. It’s a transitional album that still drives Mitchell’s work forward creatively and I’m looking forward to another Sunday session with this happy-go-lucky LP.

50

Fuelling the battle for equality, Solange's latest album demands an audience for her thoughts. And, although they’re delivered quietly, they leave a mark. Between intermittently emotional and distant odes to owning her identity as a black woman, her own mother rips apart traditional ideas of white beauty and her father reflects on his own racial profiling. These interludes give a filmic quality to the LP, making it intensely personal. Solange said she aimed to deliver “a highly honest, disruptive, angsty record" and this is certainly both honest and disruptive. Angsty, however, doesn't feel quite right... A Seat at the Table is about as confident as it gets.

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d accidentally popped on an M.I.A album from the opening strains of Tkay Maidza’s latest. And then followed it up with some FKA twigs, Azealia Banks and Charli XCX. Yep, it really is that good. TKAY is the perfect pairing of gritty hip hop and pop, a fusion that seems to still elude even the best. Our local rapper du jour has come a long way from her festival hit ‘Brontosaurus’ and we should be proud as punch that we have an Aussie chick killing the rap game (without even a hint of that tired ‘Aussie hip hop’ flavour).
