What's happening at FJ HQ this month

Employee of the month

Between all the public holidays, hot cross buns and Easter eggs, here’s what we’ve been up to this month.

Sales shopping Working in fashion means spending money on clothes. Lots of clothes. So we've reverted to warehouse, online and sample sales as the only way of stocking our wardrobes. We're also keeping a list of what sales are happening each weekend and are sending out weekly emails to let you know. Head to fashionjournal.com.au/sales for updates. Hand modelling Harder than it looks. Possible hiccups include a chipped manicure, dry hands and awkward claw placement. Shoutout to all the hand models out there, you're doing a great job.

RIP activewear Earlier this month Lululemon announced they’re taking a step away from activewear. And so are we. Here’s to going out to Sunday brunch in comfy yet casual clothes, minus leggings and yoga crops. Picking a real outfit might delay your meal a lil’ bit, but it's worth being hangry, if you're looking ten times cuter. Snapchat filters Whoever is working in the Snapchat office designing these filters deserves a medal. Our faves include the mouth-eyes, the face swap and the ones that automatically apply makeup. Add us at @fashionjournal to watch us embarrass ourselves.

Dr. Martens April is here and that means it’s time to celebrate with our pals over at Dr. Martens. It’s been 56 years since the first pair of 1460 boots rolled off the production line. True to the original, today’s boots still feature the unique air-cushioned sole and yellow upper stitching. The 1460 boot led the way for the Dr. Martens Originals offering, which also features a range of boots, T-bars and loafers. The shoe was created by German soldier and doctor, Dr. Klaus Maertens (yep, extra ‘e’), to provide comfort and support to an old injury. The Dr. Martens shoe has since become an iconic symbol for individuality and durability. Happy birthday Dr. Martens, here’s to another 56 years. For stockists call 1800 655 154

Leonard St

Vans Cast your mind back to 1966. It was a time of free love, The Beatles and the year a little shoe store in California first opened its doors. Vans is now celebrating 50 years of ‘Off The Wall’ heritage, by releasing the 50th Anniversary Gold Pack. It includes a 22-piece assortment of signature Vans silhouettes, updated with gold embellishments and archive prints. The collection is available exclusively at Vans stores this month. Happy Birthday Vans. For stockists call 1800 655 154

Leonard St’s latest collection is here. The Autumn range channels ’70s silhouettes with a modern, tailored edge. Long-line cashmere coats, tunics, pinafores, fluted sleeves and culottes are made to layer, mix and match. Refined details are balanced with an element of cute – think illustrated owls, sloth faces, proteas and beetles. A checked story is also worked into the collection and Leonard St manages to do it oh so right. leonardstreet.com.au

Third Form

Third Form never fails to impress, delivering versatile and minimal sophistication with every range. The newest collection, AW PT.6, sees the label take on clean-cut dresses, monochrome ensembles and tailored pants. The collection blurs the lines of the traditional wardrobe, with an effortless aesthetic for the modern woman. thirdform.com.au

FJ M USI C

The Inner Workings You’ve been quite vocal about supporting the LBGQTI+ community. How did this become such an important aspect of the MS MR? We’ve always wanted to use whatever platform we have to stand for issues that are important to us. Our core ethos revolves around creating an environment where we, and our fans, can feel the most comfortable as ourselves. A safe space for personal expression and experimentation, especially in terms of sexuality and gender. Style-wise, MS MR seems to embody some super-glam vibes. Where does this come from and how did you decide on your ‘look’? This record cycle has been particularly inspired by ’70s glam rock, which developed fairly naturally over time, both on-stage and off. Is your day-to-day style similar to your onstage style? Absolutely. The line between is becoming almost nonexistent, which means awesome things for our day-to-day style.

We’ve always assumed that being a New Yorker means you are automatically cool. And it’s people like Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow that validate this assumption. The duo makes up MS MR, selfdescribed makers of “Tumblr glitch pop” tunes. This month, the colourful pair are bringing their catchy tracks and glam costumes Down Under for Groovin The Moo. We got to spend some time with Lizzy and Max and discussed being LBGQTI+ activists, living on the road and sharing their music with the world.

BY VERONIC A STANFO R D

MS MR’s sophomore album has been out for a little while now. How has the response been, now that you can look back and reflect? We really wrote this record with the stage in mind, so for us the test was always how well it would translate to our live show. Now that we've performed the album all over the world, at both festivals and headline shows, it’s been incredible to see the reaction in person from our fans. It’s been beautifully validating. You’re set to come out to Australia for Groovin The Moo, what can we expect from your live set? We’re a very high energy band, so come expecting to dance and throw yourself around!

12

What’s been the most challenging thing about working in the music industry? Getting compensated appropriately for how our music is consumed. If you weren’t in music, what would you be doing? Max would most likely be a dancer or architect and Lizzy would most likely work in fashion or studio art.

There were a few years in between your first and second albums. Will this be the same with your third? We hit the road pretty hard during the Secondhand Rapture era, so the two years between that and How Does It Feel seemed pretty appropriate to us. For us, it’s about giving the record enough time to breathe and then to allow ourselves the creative space to evolve and experiment. So stay tuned...

Quick fire questions: Music is… always foreground, never background. Favourite road trip tune… ‘Shooting Stars’ by Bag Raiders. Favourite city… Berlin. My parents always say… Max: "tuck in your lips." Lizzy: "wash your hands." Sweet or savoury… salty sweet. Favourite clothing item… Lizzy: vintage Mercura NYC heart cherub sunglasses. Max: brown leather suede jacket. My guilty pleasure… we don’t believe in feeling guilty about anything that gives us pleasure. Apologise or ask permission… neither. Justin Bieber is… all over our radio and we don’t hate it. My favourite FRIENDS character is… Phoebe (Vassar College represent).

How do you find living on the road for such long periods of time? Touring was hard when we first started the band, but in recent years we’ve figured out how to make it work for us. Most importantly it’s about surrounding yourself with friends. Lucky for us, we’ve had almost the same team since the beginning, who have become a great built-in support system.

You can catch MS MR at Groovin The Moo from April 23 or at their headline shows, starting April 28 at the Metro Theatre in Sydney. msmrsounds.com

Do you have a favourite MS MR song to perform, or one you are particularly proud of? ‘How Does it Feel’, the title song from the album, is always a set highlight. It’s a great chance to get the audience involved for a big sing along.

To Rent or Not to Rent?

Savvy, safe and extremely seductive. The rent-a-dress business sure has its benefits. But is this model negatively affecting the luxury fashion industry? Or is it creating a more economic alternative? And are we becoming too obsessed with what we are wearing next weekend? *Thinking emoji* A few years ago, designer clothing rental for women was more or less completely unheard of. Yes sure, men’s suit hire was a ‘thing’. But even then, the pants were wide, the creases were deep and the fabric was slightly tarnished. On the other hand, women who didn’t want to purchase an expensive dress for a one-time event were left to borrow from a friend or close acquaintance. With that came the risk of ending the relationship because of an accidental red wine stain or an unfixable rip (definitely not caused by drunkenly falling out of a cab between event A and after-party B). This, however, has all changed in the last five years. Dress rental companies are popping up faster than Target designer collabs. In theory, the whole concept seems appealing. Wearing a dress, or potentially a whole outfit, straight off the runway for a tenth of the price? Sure thing. But is there something to say about the future of Australian fashion if our disposable income is going directly into renting the same handful of dresses? Weekend after weekend, are these rentals ruining the careers of some of our favourite Australians designers?

14

In the last few years, one by one, notable Australian designers have been faced with voluntary administration. Brands like Josh Goot, Bettina Liano, Kirrily Johnston and Lisa Ho have been forced to shut down and restructure their businesses. That’s not to say the rental industry is the culprit. However, with Australia having one of the highest number of clothing rental companies per capita… it’s definitely a factor to consider. Larissa Walsh, founder of Facebook group-cummarket leader, Rent A Dress AU, is all for the rental dress market: “While the easy answer appears to be that rental sites are causing the demise of our luxury fashion economy, I don’t believe that is true. Many individuals are now actually purchasing more designer items because they can afford to. “Rent A Dress AU encourages the purchase and acquisition of luxury designer brands, and therefore contributes to causing a luxury designer market to become more reachable by the younger fashionistas of today’s society, and in turn, helping its economy. ” It isn’t all rainbows, fast money and sunshine. Recently, I half-heartedly paid to advertise a dress I wished to rent out from my very own wardrobe. I wasn’t happy about it, but the prospect of earning a few more dollars during the silly season seemed appealing. The story goes like this: a keen renter liked my $400 dress and enquired over Facebook. Happy to receive the $90 rental fee, I organised a time with her to pick it up from my house. Annoying as it was to coordinate the pick-up without simply giving her the keys (and free-rein) to my house, she finally arrived.

B Y TA B AT HA T U RNER

And honestly, she was quite lovely. I felt bad. However that Sunday, post-renter’s said party, she sent me a Facebook message saying she hadn’t worn the dress due to her ‘European hips’ not fitting into the ‘teeny size 6’, and therefore would drop it back the next day. She must have caught me at a good time, or perhaps midway through a Pressure Cook on Masterchef, because I didn’t make her pay a cent, despite all of the inconvenience. Four weeks later, to my dismay, I realised I hadn't heard from her. In my heart I thought that perhaps she was just as lazy as me, but after scrolling/stalking/frantically searching my message banks (plural), it was evident that she had deleted all contact with me. Unable to find her, even with my FBI-grade stalking abilities, it hit me like the stench of a returned rental item that hadn’t been washed…. That b*tch had stolen my $400 dress. Renting an outfit may be a good option for a one-off style pursuit (hello Kendall Jenner double hip-high slits) or a high society black-tie event. But renting a dress every weekend is doing nothing for our bank accounts. Especially when it becomes an obsession to wear the latest craze every weekend of the year, no matter the dress code or the occasion. Just like overseas copies ruined the Tiffany & Co dogchain bracelet, allowing every girl to access the same dress every weekend is kinda ruining designer fashion. At the end of the day, nothing can replace the feeling of wanting, saving up, and buying something brand new, just for you (and you only).

Fashion Meets Art

Welcome to a world where art and fashion editorial collide, where pretty and ugly meet, and where the beauty of the inside is revealed more than the outside. Welcome to the world of Sydney-based artist, Jess Cochrane.

BY TABATHA TURNER

Firstly, who are you and where did you come from? I’m Jess. I came from the nation’s capital all the way to Sydney via Wollongong.   When did you discover your love of painting? I discovered it at a young age. I was always drawing/ painting/making and dancing around when I was younger. I still like to dance around, but I take the painting thing a little more seriously these days. How did the beautiful combination of magazine editorial and painting come about? It evolved by drawing on my day-to-day rituals, such as reading fashion magazines (like this one hehe). Rather than trying to appropriate what is considered a ‘perfect’ and ‘beautiful’ image of a woman, I use paint over the image to break down its composed appearance and transform it into a different kind of beauty. I’m allowing viewers to be open to the idea that it’s okay to have imperfections and indifferences, to embrace those qualities.   Have you always had a love of fashion? Yep! Since forever.

16

What is it about the female form and persona that inspires your work? A lot of what inspires the work is the not-so-nice stuff about being a woman. Participating in a society that is constantly telling you that you need to look, or act, or dress this way or that way to be considered feminine, beautiful or sexual. Unfortunately, a lot of the time we are conditioned to feel like shit about ourselves. On the other hand, it’s the individual strength and character of every woman that inspires me to question why these standards exist and how they affect us. Do you think you’ll ever delve into the male physique? I think there are just as many issues surrounding men in today’s world, so yes. Definitely one day. But right now it’s all about the laidez.   Where do ideas for artworks stem from? They stem from living life, relationships, being curious and reading lots of books, magazines and online articles. Are you still at university? Do you find it limits or extends your work? Yes and no. I will be heading back to complete and extend my studies in the near future, but for now I am taking a break. Studying absolutely extends your work. Art school is a paradise where you are encouraged to explore yourself and have support. I think it only limits your work if you treat it like it’s a high school math class. I.e. with disinterest.

Quick fire questions: Coffee or tea? Coffeeeeeeeeeeee. Pen or pencil? Pen. Chicken or beef flavoured noodles? Vegetable flavoured noodles. Book or kindle? BOOK. Summer or winter? The end of spring. The start of autumn.   Lipstick or eyeliner? Lipstick. Chanel’s Rouge Coco no.406 if we’re being precise. Country or city? City. But also country. But also coast. Can anyone purchase a piece of your work? (hint hint…) I am selling a selection of works through The Ladies Network online store!   What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you? There are a few things brewing. My main focus at the moment is working towards my first solo exhibition being held at Brisbane Powerhouse from May, which I’m creating a large-scale body of work for. I hope you can make it.

JADE WEARS THE NEW CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STAR II KNIT COLLECTION $130

How did you get into your career? I did a Visual Merchandising course at RMIT and happened to do work experience with a fashion stylist. We got along so she hired me as her full-time assistant, and I've been pretty much been working my ass off since. What’s the best part about your job? Every day brings a different set of challenges and requirements. I thrive on the unpredictability and rising to the challenge. What’s the worst part about your job? Probably the unstable nature of freelancing. When it rains it pours… but when it stops it can be a mother of a drought.Unfortunately I’ve never been good at saving for a rainy day! What does a typical day for you entail? Being a freelancer, you pretty much say goodbye to the luxury of ever having a typical day! Often I might start my day on emails and have all day to do back-end work, and it can change in an instant. I’ll find myself running and calling around like a headless chook to fill a brief that’s come in at the last minute for a shoot that’s the next day. What’s in your work wardrobe? Jeans. T-shirts. Cashmere knits. ALL OF THE jeans!! Do you have any advice for someone considering your job? I’d probably suggest that you do a lot of assisting if you want to be a stylist. It’s not rocket science. You learn a lot on the job that a course can’t teach you. It’s more than just putting clothes on a model. Also, it’s not glamorous! So be prepared to work hard. Play hard. And be respectful!

OPPOSITE PAGE My name is... Jasper I’m... 19 My agency is.. I’m now signed with Scene Models. I’ve been modelling for... about 15 minutes... this is my first time. I was discovered... today! I was actually just assisting for Sophia [the photographer] on the set of this shoot and she had this crazy idea to shoot me too. I’m normally behind the camera. Before modelling I was... studying architecture, taking photos and working at a hotel. I’d like to use my modelling to... go abroad. My mum’s from New York so it would be cool to go there for a bit. I’m really just keen to work with more great people and learn as much as I can. If I wasn’t modelling I’d be... pouring tea and coffee at the hotel, studying and taking my own photos on the side.

THIS PAGE My name is... Marsello I’m... 19 My agency is... FiveTwenty Model Management. I’ve been modelling for... a few months. I was discovered... by a friend of mine who is signed with FiveTwenty. The agency saw me through her. Before modelling I was... (and still am) studying marketing and fashion merchandising at RMIT. I’d like to use my modelling to... I want to take it into a career behind the scenes, working as a buyer or in PR or communications. If I wasn’t modelling I’d be... studying.

My name is... Leon I’m... 21 I’ve been modelling for... two months. My agency is... Folk Collective. I was discovered by... my girlfriend knew someone from Folk Collective and so I sent in some photos. Before modelling I was... studying film at Footscray City Films. I’d like to use my modelling to... I’m just doing it for fun. I want to use it to meet people that I can then work with in other ways. The best advice I’ve ever been given is... I can’t think of anything... I have fun with things, I suppose. If I wasn’t modelling I’d be... studying some more, if I can.

I was discovered by... a lovely girl I work with happened to know someone at Vivien's. After much debate and being followed around the office with a camera, I succumbed to her persistence and let her take a photo of me, which was later sent into the agency. Before modelling I was... at school, then I travelled for six months and saw some incredible parts of Asia! Once the trip was over I moved from Byron Bay to Melbourne. I’d like to use my modelling to... continue working with super-creative minds and inspiring people. I’d love to see myself [working] with some brands that I'm into as well. But looking at the bigger picture, if it got to a point where I could use it as a tool to travel with, I’d be satisfied. If I wasn’t modelling I’d be... doing the same thing I am doing now, taking photographs, working, having fun and figuring out where I'm at in life. I’m working towards studying in the near future, but we'll see how that goes.

We saw some agencies and I liked London the best. Before modelling I was... at high school and doing landscape gardening. My favourite modelling job so far has been... my campaigns with Jay Jays, we've got a great crew and it's always fun with good vibes. The best advice I’ve ever been given is... you win some, you lose some. My mum always says... be kind to people on the way up because you might meet them on the way down. My favourite city is... One of these features two slits, fixed with press studs, for easy access to the breasts. The other is embroidered with the word (and images of ) ‘TITZ’. And it gets better. Each piece in the Mums Titz collection is hand-sewn by designer Zarnie Morcombe’s nan, meaning each piece is made with more love than your heart can hold. plasticloaves.bigcartel.com

MINISCAPES

THE GRAPHIC DESIGN IDEA BOOK

200 YEARS OF AUSTRALIAN FASHION

Clea Cregan

Steven Heller and Gail Anderson

L.S. Hilton

I once made a terrarium with a friend. She brought over a kit and showed me the ropes. It was easy, beautiful and featured adorable mini people, but it also died pretty quickly (I forgot you actually have to water plants). Then I came across Miniscapes. It promised to teach me the skills to maintain a healthy, happy terrarium. Naturally (pardon the pun), I was sold. Although I’m yet to actually try to build another terrarium, I’m still impressed with this hardback. It’s made up of pastel pretty colours, clever photography and idiot-proof guides. Perfect for those not-so-bright people who forget plants need water.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover. But YOLO, I’m going to do it anyway because this is a book on graphic design. Based on its cover it gets a 9 because, note to the slow, the pictures spell out the title and that’s really clever. What’s inside is perhaps even more clever. Built for design novices like myself, it serves as an introduction to the key elements of design. It’s both informative and accessible, using graphics to illustrate key technical points. Drawing and sharing inspiration from 50 acclaimed designers, it covers themes from ‘simplicity’ (don’t underestimate the value of negative space) all the way to ‘wit and humour’. Accordingly, it’s visually satisfying and very, very clever.

This is the kind of book that is so nice, you don’t really want to read it in case you bend the pages. So maybe buy two copies because what lies inside is informative, authoritative and the first of its kind. In fact, I think I exclaimed “this book is so good!” at least three times while reading it. Published to support the current NGV exhibition of the same name, 200 Years of Australian Fashion tracks the development of Australian fashion over four parts: Status, Glamour, Independence and Contemporary. It starts at colonial times – when Europe was the authority for sartorial guidance – and through imagery, specialist essays and a study of over 90 designers, it shows how Australia found its distinct voice in fashion.

MIND OF MINE

III

GFOTY

Zayn Malik

Miike Snow

"Walking down the street in my brand new car" is my favourite lyric of all time. It doesn't make sense whatsoever, but neither does GFOTY herself. Toeing the line between performance art and actual musical brilliance so finely, it's hard to tell if you're ever in on the joke or are the joke itself. Like most of the other PC Music releases I've covered, VIPOTY is an abrasive EP of sharp and unconventional beats. But GFOTY wraps that up with an incredibly appealing persona: an obnoxious, Frappucino-obsessed, internet junkie who is also criminally insane. The self-awareness sets her apart from her label mates, who haven’t embraced the humorous side of the genre as much. VIPOTY had me equal parts laughing at the vapidness of it all and also dancing madly with its impressive, manic production. It's not for everyone, though. Approach with caution!

Believe it or not, I've actually never heard a One Direction song in full. I'd overheard snippets of their songs (usually in the FJ office, thanks girls) and not really understood the appeal of it at all. But then the cute one quit the band (!) and at the slightest sign of drama, I was on board. So here we are, one awful face tattoo later with Mind of Mine, Zayn's debut album. It's a clear distancing from the homogenised sound of 1D's work – this is deep and grimy R&B, assisted by Frank Ocean collaborator, Malay. So there's even some indie credibility here. Like most pop debut albums, there are missteps all over the place. These are typically the ballads – but we still get genuinely impressive jams like 'PILLOWTALK' and 'TIO'. Sometimes, though, it does feel like Zayn really wants you to know that he enjoys having sex. We get it, Zayn.

Miike Snow is a band that deserve to be more well known that they currently are. Do a quick google search for their writing and production credits! These are the guys behind Britney’s ‘Toxic’ AKA one of the best pop songs of all time, amongst so many others. But when it comes to their solo output however, (this being their third album) Miike’s music has been strangely underwhelming. There’s a definite over-reliance on auto-tuned vocals and familiar chord progressions. Sometimes it feels like a stylistic choice but on weaker tracks it does feel like it’s being used to cover a lack of natural charisma. I hate to be overly critical (unless it’s about Tidal, then watch me go!) but it really does feel like Miike Snow should stick to writing and producing for other artists. The talent is most definitely there, but that little bit of character that takes a song to another level just isn’t.

Out & About RAW Collaborations Sydney G-Star’s collaboration with influential producer/ photographer, Ta-ku, and world-renowned street artist, Anthony Lister, was revealed last month at China Heights Gallery in Surry Hills. Raw Collaborations allowed Ta-ku and Lister to delve into their interpretation of denim culture. It was all in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the iconic Elwood 5620 jean, with the carefully executed exhibition paying tribute to the staple. The warehouse location offered the perfect rustic canvas, with jeans hanging as pieces of art between industrial lights, large photos and a graphic feature wall. g-star.com

Melissa x Jeremy Scott Melbourne The much-anticipated collaboration between Jeremy Scott and Melissa launched with flying colours last month at QV Melbourne’s M DREAMS Home of Melissa store. Fun, bright and playful, the store was decked out like a childhood dream. Inflatable pool toys hung from the ceiling and drinks were served in flamingo cup holders. The setting went hand in hand with the new pool party-inspired line, which features quirky and colourful mules, sandals, ankle boots and flats. mdreamsmelissa.shoes
