The Scoop Karen Walker Well, this is a bit cute. For the first time ever, Karen Walker has enlisted the help of a celebrity model. The star of this season’s campaign is Toast – a gorgeous King Charles Cavalier Spaniel with over 150,000 Instagram followers. Karen says, “We were after a model for this campaign who could fit with our caramel-ly colour palette and also someone whose hair would work with our three wind machines hitting her from every angle to create a slightly ’70s vibe. Toast ticked every one of those boxes.” This might just be our favourite Karen Walker campaign yet.

The Label Monster

Diesel Lead by creative director Nicola Formichetti, Diesel’s Spring/Summer Pre Collection is inspired by student life, on and off campus. “The collection is an evolution of FW 2014, and Diesel’s DNA of denim, leather and military which is all present and combined with a strong pop and sporty look and colors,” says Formichetti. Broken down into the sub styles of Preppy Rock, Tattoo and Black Carpet, the lineup includes sporty logo jackets and sweaters, graphic-embellished casual wear and a subversive take on classic evening wear.

It’s no secret that The Label Monster is one of our favourite places to spend money. They just have this radar for international cult labels, emerging designers and streetwear brands that we rate highly. Sourcing their collections from every cool capital on the planet, they stock well-known brands like BLK DNM, Frame Denim and Damir Doma, and lesser-known treasures like London-based Golden Lane, Valentine Gauthier Paris, and Ukrainian designer, Bevza. Let The Label Monster scour the globe for you. thelabelmonster.com

Status Anxiety Status Anxiety’s AW15 collection continues in the brand’s well-trodden minimal aesthetic. The range, titled Superconscious, mixes luxuriously soft Italian leathers and animal print cowhides resulting in what can only be described as understated complexity. Generous allocations of space/function, embossed icon detailing and thick woven cotton canvas combine to make this range a standout. statusanxiety.com.au

PUMA x Brooklyn We Go Hard Sportswear label PUMA has gone a little badass in a collaboration with Parisian label Brooklyn We Go Hard. Continuing the plentiful relationship the brands have shared since 2010, the collection is a 360 degree concept that fuses together new colour palettes and electrifying fabrics, across a variety of footwear, apparel, and accessories. Effortlessly pulling off a galvanising version of sport-chic, the collection pulls additional inspiration from artist Ethan Cook, trademarked for his use of square and rectangular prints. Brooklyn has never gone harder in the PUMA x BWGH range available in selected boutiques. puma.com.au

Dr. Martens

Timberland

This month sees a reinterpretation of the classic Pascal boot drop into stores. The style is inspired by the way hardcore musos and fans customised their Dr. Martens in the ’80s. Punters would paint over the original colour and over time the hand-painted finishes would wear to reveal the original colour. Goodyear welted, stitched and sealed, these babies are made to last long enough for you to create your own piece of Dr. Marten history.

It’s not often we find a men’s shoe that manages to combine environmental sustainability, comfort and style. The Timberland Earthkeepers® Adventure Cupsole Chukka however, fit the bill – if you are looking for a shoe that ticks all of the above three boxes, you are onto a winner. These leather Chukkas feature comfy padding (read: 'walking on clouds' style padding) while still remaining streamlined and on-trend. The range is designed and manufactured with a commitment to the environment in mind, using recycled and eco-conscious materials whenever possible.

FJ M USIC

Tkay Time IN T E RVI EW BY BORIS HALL

Adelaide born Hip-Hop artist Tkay Maidza has done more in a year than what most musicians do in a lifetime. She has released a slew of hit singles, played in nearly all of the country’s top festivals as well as touring the USA, all at the tender age of 18.

Having read that your parents are carol singers, you obviously come from a musical background. How would you say this has influenced your musical style? The fact that I was in an environment where music was always present made it normal for me to be constantly listening to music and I think that was a big influence on me. Was it hard breaking out in Adelaide and more broadly in Australia as a female hip hop artist? I don’t think so. Everything has sort of happened coincidentally so I haven’t really thought ‘’oh this is really hard’’ or anything, its all kind of just happened organically. My biggest concern is writing songs, and if it goes well then things will just fall into place, if it doesn’t then that’s because you don’t have good songs. You recently played at Falls Festival, how was that? Falls was really fun, it was tiring travelling a lot because we were basically on the road 95% of the time. We would play for literally 40 minutes then we would have to leave. I was on pretty

" I’m really into drawing as well. So the visual element is really important for me in relation to music. " early, opening up the main stage for the other acts and there were still heaps of people there, wide awake and ready to sing along to our songs, so that was really cool. You will be premiering your new song MOB at Triple J’s Beat the Drum, can you tell us a bit more about that? MOB is a song I wrote about who I am and who I want to be. It's split into two parts; there is a singing part and then it drops into a rap. It's kind of like the singing part is me hoping to be something and then the rapping part is me explaining what I am. It's all about finding yourself and hoping you achieve what you want to be.

14

You are set to play at Laneway festival, what are you looking forward to about that? I’m looking forward to seeing all the acts. It’s probably been my biggest dream to play at Laneway, because basically anyone who plays at Laneway is cool. Well that’s my opinion. It was one of the first festivals I knew about and I was just like this is the best thing ever. You have a very unique fashion style, what drives your fashion choices and is your style reflective at all of your music? Well I love wearing a lot of black, I don’t know why, I think it mirrors my soul or something (not really), I don’t know. I also love Lazy Oaf, Ragged Priest and anything off V-Files, it's this site that stocks gear that is kind of grunge, kind of street and has really cartoony vibes also. I think it’s necessary for your style to be on point. For your style to match your music is really important, because it's all about the whole package anyway. But I really like fashion anyway, so it's also very important to me personally.

So you see a strong link between music and fashion? Yeah definitely, I’m really into drawing as well. So the visual element is really important for me in relation to music. You have performed in the US where there is obviously a big 'hip hop' scene, how does your perception of the US industry compare to Australian hip hop? Going to America you realise you are kind of a small fish in a big pond. In Australia if you are good, you are going to be up there, but in American being good is not enough - you have to work for it, you have to want to be something. Being in New York was really inspiring, there are so many amazing rappers you just don’t know about. It’s the home of hip hop, it’s where the stories come from, so that’s where everyone aspires to be. Tkay Maidza's EP Switch Tape is out now. tkaymaidza.com

Don't Go Slicing My Heart RE CIPE B Y TA B AT H A T UR NE R

INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

Nothing says romance quite like pizza, so we thought we’d step it up for Valentine’s Day. Deliver to your lover with the following inscription:

Pizza Base: 250ml warm water 30g yeast 1 tbsp olive oil 500g "00" bakers bread/pizza flour 1 tsp salt

Step 1

"Roses are red, violets are blue, I made a Love Pizza to share with you. It’s hot and it’s steamy and to eat it’s quite easy, So will you be my Valentine (or is this too cheesy?)"

Sauce: 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp chopped garlic 2 tbsp tomato paste 500g mixed tomatoes- diced Basil Salt & pepper

Mmm, romance baby.

16

Topping: The stringiest mozzarella cheese on the market Chorizo salami (cut into love hearts if you are a little OCD like us...) Basil

Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8

Place yeast and water into a bowl and mix until combined. Add olive oil, flour, salt and mix. Knead for about five minutes on a lightly floured surface until a smooth soft dough is formed. Rest for 30 minutes or until doubled in size, then punch the dough until all air is removed. You are ready to roll. In a saucepan soften garlic in oil and then add all other ingredients. Allow to simmer for 15 mins or until smooth. Roll out pizza dough to desired shape (love heart preferably), spread with sauce and top with cheese and salami. Bake for 10-15 mins in a preheated 200 degree oven. Deliver to your Valentine.

FJ PEO PLE

Perfect Fit IN T E RVI EW BY S O P H GOU LOPOU LOS

Gone are the days when gym attire comprised of plain black leggings, scuffed runners and a baggy t-shirt you acquired (read: nicked) from your dad. Today, we want to sweat in style. In keeping with this trend, designers have branched out into colourful, fashionable activewear that blurs the line between sport and daywear. Australian trendsetting label Finders Keepers has jumped on this trend fiercely. They’ve just launched their debut line of activewear, FK FIT, that includes leggings, sports bras, shorts and singlets in some amazing prints, with more to come. We chatted to head designer and avid fitness gal Kate Anderson about this exciting new direction.

What was the inspiration for this new line? It’s been on my mind for a while. With the whole boom in sport and fitness lately, I felt it was a good direction to move in. The normal range does have that sports luxe vibe about it and when we were looking for another branch for Finders Keepers, it felt like the perfect fit. I’m heavily into sport and fitness; it’s a passion of mine. You want to look good when you’re working out and you want to have fun with it, and I felt there was a real gap in the market, especially because our prints are so bright, colourful and fun. You want to be able to wear them when you’re working out and on the street during the day. Why do you think this trend has been so popular? A lot of brands are making the move to make brands a more of a lifestyle brand rather than just focusing on one direction. One, it broadens your market and customer base and two, for us, our customers are really loyal. For the Finders Keepers girl to be able to wear the label from morning to night is quite enticing. There’s definitely been huge growth in health and fitness; there was that massive push from the designers at New York Fashion Week and you saw it trickle down through there. It’s not only exercise wear but dressing more casually. More generally, from where do you get inspiration as a designer? We work a little differently to everyone else, we don’t start with a theme. Our prints really help build our ranges, so we start by picking two or three different prints per month and then we build on fabrics. We plan our ranges right from the start as per what prints are going to suit what styles. The prints really are what we’re known for and act as the base for our ranges. How would you describe the Australian aesthetic? I feel like the Australian vibe is definitely more casual, and we like to have fun with our dressing; we don’t take fashion too seriously. I think that definitely reflects the Finders Keepers girl as well, that’s what we’re all about; being on trend and having fun with dressing up, not taking huge risks but still being completely on trend. It seems then like this trend of blurring the line between active and daywear is the perfect fit for Australians particularly. Definitely. It’s so nice to be able to just wear sneakers and still feel like you’re being fashionable [laughs]. FK FIT can be purchased from BNKR online: www.fashionbunker.com.au and at their flagship store at 160 Rundle Mall, Adelaide. Free express shipping for orders over $39.

The brand, named Harlequin Romance, produces functional clothing inspired by a holistic lifestyle to which Hill lives by. With a love of travel and a deep hatred of tedious suitcase debacles, it is at the forefront of each Harlequin Romance piece to be light, fresh and multi-purpose. Design conscious while also donating to a new charity each month, Harlequin Romance is fair-game and already turning heads in the Australian fashion scene. www.harlequinromance.com.au

10 ÉTIENNE

ÉTIENNE has stolen our hearts with its fairytaleinspired clothing that looks more like wearable art than it does simple basics. The label takes inspiration from the high-low trend, with elements of kitsch pop culture and glitzy bootleg merchandise. Founder and designer Étienne Crea keeps it playful with a neon ‘Evil Fairy’ print and a Snow White kaleidoscopic design across a range of leggings, t-shirts and long-sleeved tops. It’s a glamourous kind of casual with androgynous, transeasonal and versatile silhouettes, perfect for wearing separately or pairing with their other pieces. Get your cute on. etienneclothing.com

11 Black By Geng

It’s trend-driven with a Black By Geng twist. Keep your eyes peeled for their latest February collection; think structured separates that are perfect for achieving that ultimate layered look. blackbygeng.com

Sweet Valentine Spoil that special someone (even if that someone is you) this Valentine’s Day with a little luxe pampering. Just add Love Actually and a little wine for romance this February.

label.m Haircare products for your One True Love this Valentine's Day would ordinarily seem like a not-so-subtle hint (and a total mood killer). But label.m’s Brightening Blonde range is anything but offensive to receive; for natural and bottle blondes alike, this gift is Elle Woods approved. Not simply soap for your head, this luxe haircare range says ‘spoilt’ (in a really good, not Verruca Salt kinda way). labelm.com/au

Benefit The words ‘alcohol-free’ don’t usually allude to a sexy Valentine’s Day, but with Bathina? Prohibition is worth celebrating. This body mist, sans alcohol, exudes the irresistible scent of tumbling blossom, sweet summer fruit and floral citrus. It means this irresistible perfume wont be the only thing all over you this Valentine's Day… if you know what we mean. Bathina’s got you covered from hair to toe this lovers' day. benefitcosmetics.com

Sachajuan Multi-tasker. Treats you right. Smells great. But we aren’t describing your perfect lover. Sachajuan’s protective hair perfume is your perfect Valentine’s Day companion. A symphony for your shnoz with fruits, florals, ylang ylang and musks; your up-do is about to smell better than your finest perfume. But its ability to moisturise, swap static for shine, and protect from UV means we’ve found our Valentine. And it's better than a boyfriend. sachajuan.com.au

The Aromatherapy Co. Wax doesn’t scream romance. Unless it’s a therapeutic, natural plant-based wax to set the mood for a special night, as The Aromatherapy Company’s wild mint and bergamot candle is. Not just for romance, the wild mint is thought to create a refreshing, positive and damn-right inspiring environment. A perfect gift for more than the bedroom this Valentine’s? The Aromatherapy Co. has got you covered. thearomatherapycompany.co.nz

Napoleon Perdis

If there’s ever a time for red-lipped seduction, its V-day, where a fresh-bitten, cherry-red smirk is the epitome of sex-appeal. And our man, Napoleon Perdis, has an empowering, striking lippie that allows girls to switch from mortal nude to Aphrodite crimson in seconds. Even if you’re yet to find your Zeus, pout it out this Feb with Napoleon. napoleonperdis.com

40 DAYS OF DATING

ARKIE’S PILGRIMAGE TO THE NEXT BIG THING

DENIM DUDES

Timothy Goodman & Jessica Walsh

Amy Leverton

They say truth is stranger than fiction, and 40 Days of Dating is authority that it’s also more romantic. In what started as an experiment to break each other's bad dating habits, good friends and serial daters, Tim and Jessie, decided to date each other for 40 days. The pair each logged the experience in a daily journal, beholding an utterly romantic his-and-her's tale of the same honest love story. In other words, it’s the very best kind of romcom; real life. Added bonus, both Tim and Jessie are graphic designers, so the book is visually on point. Currently in it's post-blog, pre-movie stage, now’s a good time to jump on the 40 Days of Dating bandwagon.

Holidays may be over, but while that sun continues to beat down, beach reads are as relevant as ever. And so we welcome Arkie’s Pilgrimage to the Next Big Thing. One to add to your list of easy reads, it follows a professional trend-spotter in the wake of a marital affair, who bonds with a stylish Japanese girl on the run from the Yakuza. Evidently, it’s not the most sophisticated novel you’ll ever read, but neither is anything Mills & Boon (and how much do we love those). To be read with mojito in hand, you should probably view this one as a guilty pleasure, rather than a recommendation.

We know the adage don’t judge a book by its cover, but does that extend to street style books? Apparently yes. Despite its mainstream outward appearance, Denim Dudes is a book for serious Blue Bloods. Spotlighting key denim influencers, each imparts their denim-imbued wisdom; from Peter Le Chic (NOIR) who never washes some denim pieces, to Misha Hollenback (P.A.M) who tries “to wear as little of anything as possible. Oh and there’s also Henry Holland (House Of Holland), whose denim wardrobe consists solely of Ksubi. With approximately 50 per cent of the global population wearing jeans at any given time, an appreciation of the humble denim is an asset, and Denim Dudes is key.

I'd almost given up on being a Björk fan when she started writing songs about rocks and playing bespoke pendulums. But one heartbreak later and a surprise early album release and I'm back on board. Vulnicura charts the end of Björk's decade-long romance with artist Matthew Barney. Self-produced, the album is a dense blanket of dramatic string arrangements underscored by jittering and sometimes claustrophobic electronic beats. Fair warning however, most of these songs clock over six minutes long and it is unlikely to find a spot on any of your party playlists. That said, Vulnicura is a beautifully honest body of work from one of the most innovative musicians out there. You didn't need him anyway, Björk.

I kind of love Nicki Minaj. I love the way she's continually defied the expectations levelled at female rappers and I love the bizarrely extreme opinions she elicits from people. That said, I have to admit that I rarely make it all the way through Nicki albums. It's a common complaint aimed at hip hop, but they're really just way too lengthy. This is not an album full of 'Anaconda' style party tracks. It's a surprisingly down-tempo, ballad-heavy record. My advice - go through iTunes and edit The Pinkprint down to a more manageable 10 or so tracks. And add on her guest verse on Kayne's 'Monster'. Because it's still incredible.

Were you one of those teenagers that forged notes from your parents and drank passion pop until you felt sick? If so, take those early high school years and turn them into a bratty pop record and you'll have Sucker. Most commonly known as the girl from Iggy Azealea's 'Fancy', Charli XCX trades in her signature dark electro synths for scrappy guitar hooks and shouty choruses. Despite a few moments that seem like they were created by an online Ke$ha lyric generator (if such a thing existed) there are a lot of legitimately great pop moments here. You just need to tap into that adolescent self hiding deep within and maybe have few drinks first to get into the Sucker mood.

Out & About Sugar Mountain Last month saw the return of super sweet festival Sugar Mountain. Hosted at the Victorian College of the Arts, the "summit of music and arts" boasted a line-up that included Melbourne darlings Banoffee and Oskar Key Sung, acts as huge as Nas and Ariel Pink, as well as Australian favourites King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Together they made this a day that was definitely not to miss.
