EVENT HANDBOOK LORNE VICTORIA 28 DEC 2013 1 JAN 2014

EMERGENCY information IN CASE OF EMERGENCY 1. Report any emergency or unusual situation to event personnel immediately. 2. Always remain calm and walk rather than run. 3. The Main Arena is a “safe place” and is the emergency assembly point during the Festival, unless instructed otherwise. 4. Stay at the Festival venue. You will be directed to leave only once it is safe to leave.

5. Keep clear all roads and tracks throughout the Festival for emergency vehicles at all times. 6. You will be kept fully informed through the main stage speakers, loud hailers, super screen and trained personnel. 7. Always follow instructions from trained personnel and look out for yourself, your friends and others at all times.

FIRE SAFETY A comprehensive Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan for the Festival and surrounding environment has been completed with input from Australia’s most respected fire scientist, Dr Kevin Tolhurst, the Country Fire Authority, Event Fire Services, Surf Coast Shire and the Department of Sustainability and Environment. You are here enjoying the Festival because it is safe to do so. The Festival is safe because: 1. The Festival is surrounded by a wet environment, meaning a bushfire offsite would have little or no impact onsite. 2. Fuel reduction work has been undertaken (you might notice the low vegetation under the big trees around most of the venue has been removed). 3. The Festival is well resourced with a private fire service, lots of water, equipment and trained personnel. YOU have an important role too: 1. A total fire ban is in place – including camp stoves. 2. Gas bottles can be dangerous – check yours in for safe storage via the Info Tent.

2

3. Carefully dispose of cigarette butts and keep your campsite free from rubbish (fire fuel). 4. Flares and fireworks are really dangerous – they can start fires whether they land on someone’s tent or out in the bush. They also malfunction and hurt people. If you see anyone with a flare or fireworks, report them to event personnel immediately. If you brought your own, leave them alone – you will be fined $2,000 by the Event Fire Services Australia if you let one off. 5. Smoke and embers onsite means that there is a fire offsite and the safest place to be is the main arena – stay at the Festival and in the Main Arena unless you are directed to leave. There are enough resources to keep you safe onsite. 6. Keep clear all roads and tracks throughout the Festival for emergency vehicles at all times. 7. Check out the things to do IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, listed above.

The bus stop in Lorne is located on Smith St below the school and on the festival site is just inside Gate 5. A regular shuttle bus also connects Sabine Fields to the main arena 24 hours a day. No bus operates to the Otway Fields campground – there’s a lovely walking track instead. For all bus operating hours, see pg 6. If you need RACV, visit them on the hill inside Gate 3. RULES & SAFETY No Glass: of any kind, including food or drink packaging. It’s a hazard for people as well as the animals that live here. Total Fire Ban: No BBQ’s, gas bottles, flares, fireworks, sparklers, campfires etc. The CFA will be around to keep things cool, they’ll be issuing fines and ejecting those that are doing the wrong thing. Deposit your gas bottle with the CFA (located near gate 3) for safe keeping throughout the festival (for a gold coin donation). No BYO Alcohol: it’s a part of our licensing that allows us to host this amazing event. Always drink plenty of water, watch your drinks and look after your friends. No Recording: sound and visual recordings of the festival are prohibited; still cameras are A-OK - for private use only. If it’s Illegal offsite then it’s illegal onsite. Uniformed and undercover police will be onsite throughout the event, so just do the right thing and you’ll be fine. If you have taken any drugs, please visit the medical centre for help keeping safe. (continued pg 6)

WELCOME

WELCOME (from pg 4)

No douche bags! This festival is about having fun and making friends, not enemies - so moshing, crowd surfing, stage diving and all manner of unsafe acts are best left at home. Please respect the festival Boundaries and stay within the permitted fenced zones. The internal roads must be kept clear for two-way emergency vehicles at all times so please ensure your campsite doesn’t encroach on these pathways. Slip, Slop, Slap! Protect yourself by wearing a hat, protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen throughout the day - which you’ll find at all hand wash stations thanks to our friends at LeTan. To avoid those chilly nights Rug Up and stay warm. Use Earplugs to protect your hearing. For diabetics and others in need of using Sharps during the event, there are equipment disposal bins in one cubicle of each main toilet block; you’ll spot them by the identifying stickers on the cubical doors. Make sure you keep your H2O levels up. Bottled Water is available for purchase from caterers, and our lovely fresh water tanks are nice and full and freely available throughout the site, check the map for water points.

Keep In Touch with your friends and familiarise yourself with the lay of the land, including your camping location. We’re all friends at Falls so look after yourself and others. If you need help, or you see someone who looks like they need help, just ask! The medical team, security and event staff are all on your side and only care about making sure everyone is ok. You’ll find most of them in the main arena, Information Stations or stop by the campground bases located near each toilet block. Prevention is better than cure so have fun but pace yourself and try not to over do it. It’s a big festival and best experienced from the outside of the Medical Centre. For the Drive Home, everyone departs the festival in the morning on Jan 1st, so be patient and drive carefully. Respect everyone else on the road, especially the local residents. Vanessa (the bright orange bus) and TAC have Free Breath Testing facilities located inside of Gate 4, Gate 6, the Information Stations, Sabine Fields and the Otway Campgrounds. Drop by and say hi before you depart. If you’ve had a drink the night before, take advantage of this service and look after your mates.

GREEN BELT

It’s not that easy being green but it’s definitely worth the effort. Take a gander at the beautiful grounds that are the beating heart of this great festival. The grass is low, the air is fresh, the animals are happy – which is how we’d like it to stay. Take care of the fields and please leave your campsites as you found them. Shake Your Butts but please don’t drop them on the ground. Cigarette butting stations are located at the bottom of most festoon lighting poles. Clean Up Your Act and place all your recyclables in the clear plastic bags and all other general waste in the black plastic bags provided. It’s really important that recycling bags are not contaminated with general waste. Full bags can be placed at the Waste and Recycling Stations located in the campground bases near the toilet blocks or on the edge of any of the internal festival roads for collection. You’ll be given bags as you arrive but if require more, you can grab them from the Waste & Recycling Stations, Information Stations or the Recycling Exchange Tent located in the Main Arena.

8

Binning is winning; fill a bag with cans for recycling (clear bag) from the main arena only and return them to the Recycling Exchange Tent to receive free drink tokens! En guarde, our fencing is here for a very good reason, to protect the wildlife and flora that lives in the surrounding forest reserves. Please stay within these boundaries. Bottoms Up: Our composting loos are green, clean and flush free. These custom made facilities are the finest you’ll find at any major event and by using them you’re helping us save over 180 kilo liters of water and saving 160 kilo litres of raw sewage from making its way to the ocean. All solid waste is composted and fed back to the lands throughout the year, creating a rich organic soil. See the map for locations. Smells like community spirit! Every year $1 from every ticket sold ($47,000) is donated by the festival to local community projects in Lorne, Byron and Marion Bay. In 2013 The Lorne residents gave their portion of funding to the Casey Tuntungi foundation, Casey was a Falls volunteer who suffered a debilitating spinal cord injury. The community has shown a great deal of strength and has rallied together for this great guy.

THE 2013 FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL PERFORMERS This year we’re bringing music of the spheres together, something for everyone. Dip into the artist profiles, plan a schedule, stick to at least half of it and just enjoy your time here. Discovering new bands is half the fun, have a wander.

ASTA

Tasmanian songstress & triple j Unearthed High winner Asta has built a reputation for top-notch ethereal pop. With songs like ‘My Heart Is On Fire’ and ‘Escape’ burning up the airwaves, the nation is falling in love with this mind bogglingly young talent.

12

!!! (CHK CHK CHK)

Busting onto the scene a few years ago with the unstoppable ‘Me and Guiliani Down by the Schoolyard’, these Brooklyn natives have been noisily carving a feelgood niche for themselves, and will return to our shores with a hugely anticipated live show in tow.

BIG SCARY

A special breed of ‘stop your car, listen and wait until the back announcer lets you know what that amazing song was’ – that’s Big Scary. Their 2013 album Not Art features tracks like ‘Phil Collins’, ‘Luck Now’ and ‘Harmony Sometimes’, all mini-masterpieces crammed into 3 minutes. On stage they are no less visceral.

ANNA LUNOE

Supporting acts like Lupe Fiasco, Daft Punk, M.I.A and The Chemical Brothers with her strong tribal, two-step garage beats. Her mission is to get the crowd dancing and she succeeds, Lunoe has built a huge reputation for her DJ skills and general lust for life. The perfect way to kick off or wind down your night!

BOMBINO

Bombino is an acclaimed guitarist and songwriter from Agadez in Niger. His unlikely musical partnership with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys has taken his incendiary rock and blues to the world. He will be making his maiden Australian voyage this summer!

ENTERTAINMENT

BONOBO

There are musicians, there are DJ’s and then there is Bonobo. Hailing from Brighton, the man known as Simon Green to his folks has spent the better part of a decade mastering the culmination of precise DJ and electronic work with live band instrumentalism, culminating in this year’s larger than life record The North Borders.

BORN RUFFIANS

Toronto’s indie rock trio creates a jaunty mix of shifty guitar riffs and hyper-chic vocals for a Pixies-esque shredded kind of sweetness. The band’s first album, Red Yellow & Blue arrived in spring 2008, they returned with 2010’s Say It and now in 2013, they’ve delivered their fourth studio album, Birthmarks, featuring the single “Needle.”

THE CAT EMPIRE

It may be an oversimplification but The Cat Empire has always been a band created for the singular purpose of making people dance. Harry, Felix and the boys are becoming nothing short of institutions on the Australian festival landscape – they really need no introduction. They’ll get a hell of a reception though.

CHET FAKER

He’s the man with the beard. His beard would give The Beards a run for their beard money. Much more than a hirsute object though, the hairy Melbournite has taken the local and international scene by storm – Faker’s down tempo soul and electronica sounds have seen him gain huge, much deserved popularity.

CITIZEN KAY

One of the most exciting young rapper / producers in Australia today, described as Australia’s answer to Lupe Fiasco and ‘the White Stripes of hip-hop’. His recent The Yes! EP confirmed Citizen Kay’s bourgeoning reputation as an artist capable of transcending genres and limitations – creating a sound that is uniquely his own.

CRYSTAL FIGHTERS

Crystal Fighters have a unique sound, which, despite their London origins, is steeped in Euro culture. You’ll know their huge hit ‘Love Is All I Got’ and their newest record Cave Rave, which bears even more of that travelling folktronica goodness.

CYRIL HAHN

Gaining notoriety after dropping glacial reverb all over Destiny Child’s ‘Say My Name’, the Swiss-born, Canada-based wunderkind has frisked up everything from HAIM to Solange to the xx – making him one of the most in demand producers on the planet at the moment.

14

ENTERTAINMENT

DAPPLED CITIES

One of the bravest, most forward thinking acts on the Australian landscape. Known for their skewed take on guitars (and life), these lads have always had a knack for providing a special kind of warped brilliance right when we need it most. On stage they are tight as a drum and no less bouncy.

EGO

Ego’s audio-visual live show is a multi-sensory odyssey – parading herds of popculture samples through psychedelic cinema-scapes on-screen, all the while serving up genre-melding, club DJ sets to the dance floor. An Ego show is an experience like no other.

16

THE DELTA RIGGS

Springing forth from Melbourne, The Delta Riggs have been flat tack making a name for themselves over the past year with their no holds barred, melodic, fourto-the-floor style. Having just released their killer debut album HEX.LOVER.KILLER and its accompanying single ‘Rah Rah Radio’ – the boys have cut a swathe through the airwaves.

EMMA LOUISE

First stirring us with her stunning debut single ‘Jungle’, this Brisbane native is a rare breed of songstress. Leaving her folk sound behind and unleashing the sublime ‘Boy’ late last year, the single was a precursor to her brilliant debut record Vs Head Vs Heart, which has become a favourite among critics and audiences alike.

DUSTIN TEBBUTT

The name on everyone’s lips of late. Be it via the power of a really great song, the hype machine in overdrive or just that voice – that amazing swoon of a voice – a reputation is building. Our suggestion is to get in on the bottom floor before this young man explodes.

FLIGHT FACILITIES

Flight Facilities literally burst onto the scene in 2010 with their massive single ‘Crave You’. They have a hell of a knack for creating chilled out electro numbers like ‘Foreign Language’ and the blissful ‘Clair De Lune’ which, accompanied by a stunning video, landed at number 17 in last year’s Hottest 100.

GENERIK

He claims to be the first DJ to have played on the Moon. Whether that’s true or not (we can’t exactly prove that he hasn’t, right?), DJ Generik has certainly clocked up enough frequent flyer points to earn himself a round trip to space by now with his mix of techno, house, club and dance tunes.

HANNI EL KHATIB

Describing his music as being tailor made for anyone “who has ever been shot or hit by a train”. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced the San Franciscan’s latest record Head In The Dirt, and Khatib certainly shares that sense of economy and ability to transform a melody into huge energy.

18

GOSSLING

As far as highly anticipated Australian albums go, it’d be pretty hard to go past Gossling’s debut album ‘Harvest of Gold’ released this year. With a live show as charming as it is breathtaking – it’s a treat to welcome this young lady of the future back to the Falls stage.

HERMITUDE

One of the undisputed breakout stories of last year was Blue Mountains based hip-hop outfit Hermitude. With their unavoidable single ‘Speak Of The Devil’, its J Award winning clip and finally their Australian Music Prize winning album Hyperparadise.

GRIZZLY BEAR

One of the best-loved indie bands on the planet! These Brooklyn natives built a legion of fans with their albums–Yellow House, Veckitamest and Shields. The heady mix of the twin falsetto and tenor vocals of Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen accompanied by woozy atmospherics make Grizzly Bear a peerless proposition.

HIATUS KAIYOTE

With a somewhat indefinable style that incorporates Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding and Tupac Shakur as well as traditional flamenco and influences from Mali and Colombia, Hiatus Kaiyote are a collection of musicians ready to open your eyes.

ENTERTAINMENT

HORRORSHOW

These dexterous WestSydney lads known as Solo and Adit have thrived. Horrowshow have moved from strength to strength, blitzing festivals, sold out tours and dominating internationally as they go. King Amongst Many is the title of the new record and it’s completely accurate.

JOHNNY MARR

Finding fame with his experimental and downright game changing guitar work and song writing for The Smiths, Johnny Marr has become one of popular music’s greatest innovators to strap on a 6 string. Playing songs from both The Smiths and his debut solo album The Messenger, don’t miss this one!

JACKIE ONASSIS

Jackie Onassis are all about the good times. As the best kept secret in Aussie hip-hop, these two young Sydney-siders have settled in as part of the One Day crew and specialise in the sharp delivery of rich, catchy melodies, 808 beats and live instrumentation.

THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS

One of Australia’s best indie bands right now are the lads from Brisbane, The John Steel Singers. Their new album ‘Everything’s A Thread’ is filled with Afro-pop basslines; choppy power pop guitars-and-drums; Eno-esque weirdness; high, boys-on-the-beach vocal lines and dance moves reminiscent of Manchester’s late ’80s E-peak.

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW

With a sound both timeless and modern, Irishman James Vincent McMorrow landed on Australian radars with last year’s enthralling album Early In The Morning and its stunning single ‘If I Had A Boat’. His songs pack sweet-as-honey falsettos and lyricisms that have you literally hanging on every next word.

LITTLE BASTARD

Little Bastard in name and reputation, this 7-strong collection of hairy, ramshackle Sydney-siders have come together with the soul purpose of creating a mighty din. Guitars, bass, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, beats and a hell of a lot of voices are used to lure you in to swoon and bounce you out with energy.

LONDON GRAMMAR

‘Wasting My Young Years’, the debut single from London Grammar is one of those rare pieces of music with the ability to stop you dead in your tracks. It comes from their critically acclaimed debut album If You Wait which has seen their popularity on our shores sky-rocket.

MGMT

After charming all and sundry with their debut album Oracular Spectacular and subsequent classics like ‘Kids’ and ‘Electric Feel’, they took an epic left turn with 2010’s mind bending Congratulations. MGMT, everyone’s favourite space nerds, are now back with a new self-titled album and a whole new set of tricks!

M4SONIC

M4SONIC has become the latest Australian to harness the power of YouTube. After discovering the Novation Launchpad, he uploaded a self-made video of his mashup ‘Weapon’ that, in less than three weeks, garnered more than a million views! Added to this he’s provided the soundtrack to the ultra viral (119 million views) EDM parody ‘The Fox’.

MOTORIK VIBE COUNCIL

Motorik Vibe Council started life as an underground, monthly, pop up techno party dedicated to bringing its devotees the underside of the underground. Utilising warehouses and studio spaces, sometimes BYO and sometimes free – with all members striving for the same beats. It’s about hard techno and a good vibe, get involved!

MEG MAC

A Sydney local at heart, 22 year old Megan McInerney is the sonorous songstress behind Meg Mac. Growing up with the likes of Motown and Soul, she oozes soulful pop melodies reminiscent of Amy Winehouse whilst retaining her own unique flair.

THE MURLOCS

Emerging from a vibrant Melbourne garage scene The Murlocs are all about a blown out, distorted brand of soulful R&B. Informed by the likes of The Nuggets and carrying with them a distinctive 60’s vibe, they describe their genre as “sloppy” but like a really good kebab at 3am, it’s a sloppy kind of love.

ENTERTAINMENT

MUSTERED COURAGE

On the back of their second album Powerlines, this Melbourne bluegrass quartet have proven themselves deserving of a place at the top of the Australian roots scene. If you like your tunes with bite – Mustered Courage are your men!

OWL EYES

Owl Eyes (aka Brooke Addamo) continues the intrigue as she delivers her first full-length project this year Nightswim. A remarkably deep, ultra-modern, vibrant collection, Nightswim not only showcases Brooke’s signature pop sensibilities and sublime taste, it firmly establishes her as one of music’s brightest and most innovative songwriters.

24

NEIL FINN

What is there to say about Neil Finn that hasn’t already been said? Very little. The man is a musical institution, as the lead man of Crowded House, Split Enz and more! He’s coming to the Falls stage with solo works and past hits that will keep you singing and dancing.

THE PAPER KITES

No doubt you will have heard one of their sublimely hushed tunes on the wireless – whether it be ‘Woodland’ from their debut EP, ‘Maker of My Time’ from it’s follow up Young North, or their debut long player States which is simply stunning.

OLIVER TANK

At the forefront of Australia’s thriving electronic scene, 23 year old Sydneysider Oliver Tank has made a name for himself with his deft, blissed out glitch pop. Citing the likes of James Blake and Bon Iver as influences, Oliver released his debut EP Dreams to amazing reviews all over the globe.

PERCH CREEK FAMILY JUG BAND

These guys have anthropologists baffled. Why did they turn out the way they are? Was it because they all drank from the muddy waters of Perch Creek from birth? Either way, circumstances conspired to create a band of siblings with an incredibly unique and diverse sound that seems to find its way through the cracks between a vast array of genres.

ENTERTAINMENT

POND

Riding high on the wave of crazy excess afforded by Beard Wives Denim, their breakout album of last year, WA psychedelic devotees Pond are back with Hobo Rocket. First single ‘Xanman’ is a classic piece of chunky guitar riffery, resplendent with Nick Allbrook’s now signature wail.

THE ROOTS

The thinking man’s hiphop act, this Philly-based collective have been kicking around for no less than 25 years. You’ll know their massive hit ‘The Seed’ but there is so much more to The Roots – not least a knock-down-drag-out, riot of a live show.

THE PREATURES

Sydney-siders The Preatures just make everything look so easy – whether it be their cool-as-fuck on stage swagger, their retro-modern acid wash video clips or their girl-boy will-they-or-won’tthey vocal styles. And the songs! Dear God the songs! ‘Is This How You Feel’, ‘Take A Card’ and more. Don’t miss.

THE RUBENS

Their debut album was an unmitigated success, with singles like ‘Lay It Down’ and ‘My Gun’ entering the national song consciousness quicker than you can say “hand picked Bruce Springsteen support”. Dreams really do come true, but for a band like The Rubens, the dream was really just the catalyst.

REMI

Expertly balancing singing and rapping, Remi represents a young artist that is almost too smart for his own good. Almost that is – but not quite, as the tonguein-cheek braggadocios style of this 22 year old Melbournite is exactly the breath of fresh air we need right now.

RUFUS

Sydney synth warriors RUFUS have been pricking up ears all over the country of late, riding a wave of radio play and an ecstatic live show to some serious props. 26
