What is 21st century learning? How different is a 21st century learner from all the learners before? ‘21st century learning’ is a modern buzzword is that is commonly misunderstood. As it is usually defined, 21st century learning involves the use of technology to facilitate learning and application of knowledge. The truth is, technology is merely the vehicle used by students and teachers to make it easier to learn and teach. 21st century learning benefits from the use of technology, but does not necessarily rely on it. 21st century learning is a re-emphasis on the importance of re-engaging students on their own terms in the noble pursuit of knowledge. In other words, it is about allowing a student to participate in self-learning at their own pace and in a conducive environment. Technology provides the means and the tools to make this happen. The exciting thing is that we can already see this happening in the Frog Classroom at SMK Puchong. The enthusiasm shown by the students and their teachers show how one’s learning environment coupled with the use of technology can change anyone’s outlook toward education. As Google’s Rahayu Ramli shares in this issue, the face of education has been changing and is going to change rapidly in the coming years. We can’t run away from the fact that we are in the 21st century and technology is invading every area of our lives, but how do we make the best of it? We at FrogAsia are confident that the success at SMK Puchong is just an example of what can happen when it’s done right. It can be replicated anywhere, even at your own school! Tomorrow is going to be bright and bold to match the tenacity and excitement of future generations. Teachers, parents and students, we hope you’re excited as we are to be part of shaping this future! Happy reading! God bless,

Lou Yeoh Executive Director

21ST

CENTURY LEARNERS

SPEAK! The students of SMK Puchong share their thoughts [By Esther Dharshini ]

What do you think of the Frog Classroom?

If you were a teacher, how would you teach your students?

It’s very colourful which makes it interesting to study in. The Chromebook helps us find information easily and it also helps us with our future and our careers.

I wouldn’t be strict and I would be friendly to impress them, as usually students don’t like strict teachers but like loving teachers. I will also use technology and presentations. By doing that I will be able to increase their interest in studies.

It’s the best classroom! This class is very pretty, creative and interesting. When students come to this class, they are more focused. It’s different from the old classes, which are boring. This class is new, so it has a different kind of feeling.

I would ask the students to decorate this class. For example, if the students have created a mind map, I will ask them to paste the paper on the wall so others can see it. If a student does research at home, they can also paste their research on the wall. Everyone can share what they have learnt with each other.

It's nice! It's definitely more comfortable than our previous classroom which really helps us concentrate on what our teachers are saying when they teach. My favourite part is of course, the mirror!

I would give them presents for good marks so that they will be excited to learn!

Thareni a/p Kalaivanan

Fatin Hidayah Rusli

Chen Qiao Xin

The classroom is more beautiful compared to normal classrooms. The colour of the classroom makes the students’ minds peaceful and they don’t feel angry all the time. The table arrangement and seating order is also nicer.

I would ensure there is two-way communication between the students and teacher. This will help to solve the students’ problems and also understand their feelings.

BRIDGING THE

DIGITAL DIVIDE WITH THE

FROG

CLASSROOM [ By Crystal Cha ]

W

hen SMK Puchong was founded in 1975, it had only just over 200 students in a single session. Today, the school has grown to over 1,600 students and holds a morning and an afternoon session. Phang Chia Chen, a Mathematics teacher and the school’s Frog Admin and ICT coordinator, has been teaching in the school for over 22 years now. When he was first posted to SMK Puchong, it used to be notorious for gang fights and disciplinary issues. The school was located in an underdeveloped area of Puchong and students did not came from privileged backgrounds. “When I first came to SMK Puchong, I was shocked, ” says Phang. “Many students come from lower-income families and didn’t even have enough pocket money to afford food at the canteen.” “What motivates me,” says Phang, “is knowing that kids can change. That’s why I have been a teacher for 31 years. I’m always positive that people can change.

“When I saw the

COMPLETED CLASSROOM,

it totally surpassed my expectations. It would be great if every classroom could be like this.”

Today, more development has come into Puchong, and things have improved. Our school has produced respectable engineers, doctors and lawyers.” Phang believes that access to technology is the key to giving his students an equal chance to compete on a level playing field when pursuing higher education or joining the workforce.“The future is going to be digital,” says Phang. “Everything is moving towards being digitized. Kids who don’t have exposure to technology will be left behind. That is the reality we have to face.” Although the school has made notable progress academically, it has been a constant challenge to provide the students of SMK Puchong with access to technology. Phang has been lobbying for more classes to be taught with technology and assigned homework through the Frog VLE. 6

However, this is a challenge when students don’t have computers at home to study with. “I do whatever I can to help them,” said Phang. “Once, after school, as I was getting into my car to drive home, a student approached me and asked if she could use the computer lab to complete her homework. Her teacher had assigned her homework on Frog and she didn’t have a computer at home. I got out of my car and opened the lab. If I can open up more access to technology for a child, I will do it. But there is always more that can be done.” A turning point for the school came in of 2014, when Datin Kathleen Chew, Programme Director of YTL Foundation, was invited by Teach for Malaysia to teach a class in SMK Puchong.

She was surprised to find the classroom in a terrible state of disrepair. Chairs and tables were broken and vandalised. Window panes were missing, which meant that outside noise spilled into the classroom. She was also surprised to find that the school was very active in promoting the use of Frog and technology despite the challenges. Wanting to help, YTL Foundation enlisted help from other divisions within the YTL Group and set to work transforming one of the classrooms into a colourful, comfortable, air-conditioned environment for learning and collaboration. “I was very touched that YTL wanted to come and do a classroom makeover,” said Phang. “I felt that all my efforts in trying to implement technology in the school were finally bearing fruit.”

“WHAT

MOTIVATES

ME IS KNOWING THAT

Kids Can Change.

THAT’S WHY I HAVE BEEN A TEACHER FOR 31 YEARS.”

When they go for

job interviews, kids who don’t have exposure to

TECHNOLOGY will be left behind. This is the reality we have to face.

7

“When the idea of a classroom renovation was first brought up, I was wondering how a basic classroom was going to be transformed,” said Lee Poh Eng, the principal of SMK Puchong. “But when I saw the completed classroom, it totally surpassed my expectations. Having this kind of access to technology is a privilege for our students.” Currently, the Frog Classroom is used for teaching English and Mathematics. To encourage teachers to make full use of the space, the school has created a calendar with different time slots for classes to be held in the Frog Classroom.

Teknologi

DALAM DUNIA

PENDIDIKAN ...bersama Cikgu Norsham

S J

S J

Bagaimanakah teknologi membantu pelajar memupuk skil-skil penting untuk memasuki alam pekerjaan kelak?

“Teachers are facilitators to students’ learning,” said Lee. “That’s why they must know how to operate technology and how to guide students. Students are fast learners and once you guide them and give them a direction, they learn on their own very quickly.” When asked what the response has been since the Frog Classroom was launched, Phang said, “The students enjoy it and are constantly begging to have more classes in the Frog Classroom!”

S J

Rahayu Ramli Hai Rahayu! Terima kasih kerana sudi ditemu bual.

[ Teks Oleh Ramziah Razak ]

10

Sama-sama! Saya berbesar hati dapat berkongsi sedikit sebanyak pendapat bersama pembaca Lilypad.

What if you could change the world simply by doing what you love? Be it dancing, running, baking, or even painting! Last year, a few schools around the country decided to do just that, after being inspired by worldrecord athlete, Julia Immonen and her 45-day row across the Atlantic ocean to raise global awareness on human trafficking. Following Julia’s campaign title #RowForFreedom, each school chose a #ForFreedom project that would contribute to helping others in need whether its simply raising awareness on social injustice or directly raising funds towards its cause.

#GiveForFreedom SMK KIARAMAS A"Free Market Day" where two orphanages were invited to ‘shop for free’! The students collected items, raised and donated RM2400.00 for them, and also cooked food for the event.

#EducationForFreedom SMK ASSUNTA A voluntary tutoring program where students took turns in groups to tutor children from the Agathians Shelter every two weeks. They held art and reading sessions for these primary school-aged children that helped encourage creativity and improve literacy.

MAKE YOUR OWN

Book FrogAsia’s World Book Month is just around the corner, so we thought it would be fun to learn how to do simple bookbinding! It’s an easy art and craft idea that can be used to make presents.

YOU’LL NEED A4 patterned paper x 1 A4 plain paper x 10 A hole puncher x 1 A blade x 1 1.5 meter coloured string x 1 Ruler x 1 Stickers (optional)

Just follow the 5 steps below!

2

1

Fold!

Fold the A4 patterned paper down the middle and use the blade to cut it in half. Do the same for the A4 plain paper and make 20 A5-sized pieces in total. Use a ruler to help you get straight line cuts.

Put Together!

Sandwich your plain paper in between your patterned paper. Make sure the patterns are always facing the outside. Then stack it together so that all papers are aligned on the side that you will be binding.

3

Make holes!

Using a hole puncher, punch holes through the papers on the side that you will be binding. Make sure your holes are evenly spaced apart.

5

4

Decorate!

This part is entirely up to you. You can draw patterns on it, leave it plain, or fill it with colourful stickers just like we did!

Tie up!

Thread your string through the first hole at the corner and tie a small knot. Using the longer end of the string, start weaving through each hole as shown in the photo. Tie a knot to secure the string. Cut off any loose ends.

This is a simple bookbinding technique for beginners. For something more advanced, watch this video tutorial.

ways to fall in

g n i d a e r h love wit Reading is a good habit to have. You’ll be able to read and learn about many wonderful places and things. Constant reading also helps to improve your language skills. Here are some ways to grow your love for reading!

1

Set a normal reading time Think of a time in your day when you’re free. Maybe in the morning, at the bus stop or in the evening, after you’ve finished your homework. Instead of watching TV or surfing the Internet, spend 20 - 30 minutes reading instead. Make sure you do it every day!

Always carry a book with you Going somewhere where you’ll be waiting a lot, like the dentist, or following mum to the bank? Then make sure you bring a book along! It’s a great way to pass the time and not be bored!

3

Find a book you love! Books and stories are often divided into categories like Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy and so on. Find one with stories that interest you the most!

Ask your friends about what they are reading! Grow a habit of reading and sharing books with your friends! This helps encourage you to read books you’ll otherwise not read or buy!

5

2

4

Keep a reading diary After reading a book, write down the parts you found interesting in a reading diary. You’ll remember the story better while improving your writing skills. If you have a NILAM book, why not write in that as well?

A SHOUT OUT TO

SUPERSTARS

Recognising changemakers in schools and beyond

The greatest things often start with small beginnings and we know a few schools who are definitely on the right track. Here are our shout outs to some amazing people who are making a difference for schools in Malaysia!

SK Sayong, Perak

En. Arthur Bangguan SK Pendidikan Khas, Sabah

For implementing a creative method to teach the Standard 1 hearing-impaired children how to write alphabets. Using the Chromebook, En. Arthur uses animations from YouTube that show step by step how to write each letter. He then gets his students to trace on the screen and they would then practice on paper. As a result, students are more focused and engaged and they would high-five each other with smiles when they managed to trace the letters correctly! Well done Cikgu Arthur for thinking out of the box in finding ways to teach better!

For being so generous with knowledge of how to use Frog! They conducted a Frog training Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan (LADAP) session for 18 teachers at SK Tanah Merah and despite some initial technical challenges, teachers were able to learn how to use Frog. Well done to SK Sayong’s “Jurulatih Utama” En. Mohammad Nor, Pn. Hartini Md. Sirat, Cik Salasiah Zainuddin and the Head Teacher Tuan Aziman Abu Bakar! We are very proud of you for taking the initiative. These are true Frog Teacher Champions!

SJK(T) Barathy, Kedah For winning the first place in the Kedah State Best Primary’s VLE Dashboard Competition! The competition was held in conjunction with Karnival Pembestarian & Teknologi Pendidikan Negeri Kedah 2014. A special shout out to SJK(T) Barathy’s Head Teacher, Puan Amuniyammal A/P Supramaniam for encouraging the students to participate in competitions that give them the chance to enhance their skills with Frog.

Pn. Marziean Shapian SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Selangor

For innovating new ways to use Frog! Together with few of her students from her ICT class, Pn. Marziean created a site called SmartCo on Frog. With this, she initiated an online Co-Curricular Registration system where students need not fill in paper forms anymore. The system went viral and other schools have followed suit! She also created a fun and informative site for the Program Transformasi Diri (PTD) that is managed by the school’s Guidance and Counselling Unit. We are so proud of you, Pn. Marziean for believing that change is possible if we work towards it!

If you know a school or teacher who has done amazing things to help improve teaching and learning using technology, write to us at hello@frogasia.com or use the hashtag #frogsuperstars on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and we just might feature them in our magazine!

Sesi Soal Jawab FROG! Get your Frog Questions Answered!
