. .. a i s A g o r F A Note from Welcome to our very special issue on the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards 2015. In March, the Ministry of Education with FrogAsia and YTL Foundation put these awards into motion as a celebration of those who teach the children of our nation. It takes very special sort of people to dedicate their lives to shaping and educating the next generation. We will never stop needing lighthouses on our journey through learning, and we will never forget the people who have helped us shape our world. Those who teach truly do leave a legacy. This is why the past two months have been such an adventure. From announcing the awards and receiving over 1,400 nominations from across the country, we have felt a part of the excitement experienced by teachers and students across Malaysia. For Teachers’ Day, we asked all teachers across this country, Cikgu, who are you? We saw how unique each of you are. Your individual brilliance and courage shine through in all you do. Teachers, no matter who or where you are - whether your school is in the highlands or in the midst of a bustling city - we thank you. We hope, readers, that you explore the seventh issue of The Lilypad with as much joy and curiosity as we experienced in these past two months. Students, we believed with you that your teachers in these stories could move mountains; because they could move your hearts and your minds - and they make you believe you can fly. Teachers, you truly deserve the recognition for doing the amazing things you are doing and we’re so excited to share your stories. Have a wonderful month of June!

Love,

The FrogAsia Family

A GREAT TOOL FOR COLLABORATION

“Once, I rode on an all-terrain vehicle, and it actually rolled over with me underneath! I survived only because the steering handle prevented the vehicle from crushing me.”

This thirst for adventure and trying out new things led Cikgu Nazira to try collaborating with others on the Frog VLE using video chat/ widget. Google Hangouts on Air is a tool that allows users to chat with each other online through their computers. Teachers are also able to record a collaborative classroom for publishing on YouTube, allowing their students to replay it as many times as they want.

The Hangouts are great because I get to save up all my videos for my students to watch

in the future.

Google Hangouts are also a great opportunity for teachers to collaborate with teachers from other schools, industry experts and more. Her students especially love it when there are guest teachers. “They are more motivated and curious about what they can learn on their own, rather than only receiving it from me. They understand that they can learn anything from anywhere. It’s one of the reasons why Google Hangouts has made such an impact on my students.”

“I want my students to be self-motivated to learn.” 13
