rom a wealthy Boston family, Horatio Greenough (1805-1852) traveled to Italy upon graduation from Harvard to study art and remained there for all but three years of his short life. Inspired by Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, Greenough’s Washingtons have the short hair, blank eyes and idealized pose of antiquity. In 1832, Greenough was commissioned by the United States government to create a statue of George Washington. His colossal seated figure of the first president was modeled after a fifth century BC statue of Zeus. Greenough was the first American sculptor to achieve international recognition and his Neoclassical marble busts of George Washington are found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Andalusia Foundation; and the United States Naval Academy Museum. These busts show Washington bare chested or with one shoulder draped. The present fully-draped version may be unique.

168 Late Classical monumental carved mahogany sideboard attributed to anthony quervelle (1789-1856), philadelphia, pa, circa 1830 Of grand proportions, the top surface and base with gadrooned edges, two graduated pillars and pilasters with acanthus carved bases flanking three storage doors, all below two drawers, the pierced backsplash with intricately carved grapevine which is possibly unique. H: 64 in. W: 90 1/2 in. D: 31 in. provenance: The Schwebel Company, Chicago, Illinois. Advertised in The Magazine Antiques (May, 1998). note: The present sideboard relates to several Philadelphia examples that share similar design features. Three examples found in the Art Institute of Chicago (acc. 1974.8), Saint Louis Art Museum, and most recently offered at Neal Auctions Company, New Orleans, Lot 0412 (February 20, 2016), all have side doors in the form of trapezoidal towers resting on acanthus bases with paw feet, evoking Egyptian temples. The towers, surmounted by cornices, flank a storage

77

drawer above two doors which are divided by gadrooned edges (see Boor, Philadelphia Empire Furniture (2006), pages 410-411). The present work, while having three storage doors, and pillars and pilasters versus engaged towers, does share the presence of gadrooned edges. Additionally, the sideboard sold at Neal Auctions features a backsplash with pierced grapevine brackets which relates most closely to the present work. Sketch 13 from Anthony Quervelle’s sketchbook illustrates the design for a “basile end sideboard” that has graduated columns to either end, like the present sideboard (Boor, page 106). Two extant sideboards follow Quervelle’s sketch in overall composition-one in the Missouri Governor’s Mansion and the other in the collection of Andrew Jackson’s home The Hermitage. Jackson’s sideboard, attributed to Anthony Quervelle, compares to the present example in its round pillars to either end with the foliage-carved bases, and a pierced backsplash with grape motif (Boor, page 405). The present sideboard’s backsplash appears to be unique, however, in its intricacy and scale. $4,000-6,000

usan Catherine Waters (1823-1900), best known for her precise still lifes and depictions of domesticated animals, worked primarily in the New York and Pennsylvania areas. Having no initial formal training, Waters started her career as a portrait painter, but her eventual move to Bordentown, New Jersey led her to pursue landscape painting and animal studies. Waters’ success as an artist allowed her to support her husband, William Church Waters, who was plagued by illness. Two of her works, both depicting animals, were exhibited at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia.

gachot the estate of richard & irene

lots 215-275

I

n 1960, Richard and Irene Gachot began renovating a 1761 Quaker farmhouse on Long Island. The hand-hewn beams and mantelpieces, together with curiosities like the musket balls they found imbedded in walls, piqued their interest in early American folk art. Although the way had been paved by collectors such as Electra Havemeyer Webb (who lived just down the road), the Thaws, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Elie Nadelman, and Andy Warhol (with whom Irene had worked while in the art department at Doubleday), the Gachots found early Americana wonderfully underappreciated. It was an exciting period to collect, and along with their friends the jazz writer Whitney Balliett and his wife Nancy, and the antiques dealer James Abbe and his wife Fuffy, they made an adventure of finding the treasures hidden under their noses. In 1969, Abbe returned from a trip upstate with two portraits by Ammi Phillips. The Gachots bought the more pensive and evocative of the pair. Last January, that picture, Girl in a Red Dress with a Dog, set a record for American folk painting at Christie’s. As collectors, the Gachots were drawn to the beauty of simple means but also to character—the sense of a story behind a piece. They eventually discovered that the musket balls in their home were from Hessian soldiers, garrisoned there during the Revolution, shooting stuffed parrots they’d nailed to the walls. Both artists, the Gachots populated those same walls with pieces chosen with a rare eye for visual charm and a sense of stories that remain untold. Ted Gachot, March 2019

T

he work shares many similarities to the “Noah’s Ark,” attributed to John Landis, sold January 24, 2014, Visual Grace: Important American Folk Art from the Collection of Ralph O. Esmerian, Sotheby’s, Lot 646. See Stacy C. Hollander, American Radiance: The Ralph Esmerian Gift to the American Folk Art Museum (2001) p. 491 . The essay in the publication on the work by Pennsylvania German decorative arts scholar, Rev. Frederick S. Weiser, notes that Landis painted Noah’s Ark at least twice. Frances Lichten’s “John Landis, Author, Artist and Oriental Tourist,” Pennsylvania Folklife, Vol. 9. No. 3, 1958, pp. 8-17, offers a biography of the passionate and eccentric artist. Born in Hummelstown to well-to-do and devout Lutheran parents, Landis early on felt “annointed by God “ to study “the divine art of painting.” He published many works on religion and poetry expressing his increasingly fervent beliefs. He painted portraits, historical paintings and religious works, small to monumental in scale, and asked huge sums for the pieces. In his 1839 publication, Discourse on the Depravity of the Human Family, Landis confidently remarked, “I may say I was born a painter, poet and man of genius.” Well known in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Landis stood out as a dandy in dress. He traveled to Europe in 1833 and to Palestine in 1845. During the latter trip, Landis became increasingly delusional, and was purportedly found wandering in the desert by Bedouins who returned him to the American consulate in Alexandria. He is said to have died in an almshouse.

Catalogue Descriptions All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

Bidding At the sale Registered bidders will be assigned a bidder number and given a paddle for use at the sale. Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. The auctioneer will not mistake a random gesture for a bid. By phone A limited number of telephone lines are available for bidding by phone through a Freeman’s representative. In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
