studied communication design (fine art photography and conception/reception) at the University of Essen and the Düsseldorf Academy of Art (under Magdalena Jetelova). She works free-lance in photography and the new media in an artistic, scientific and curatorial capacity. Research foci: portraits and human likenesses subject conceptions in portraiture from different eras in photography, painting and sculpture. Curated exhibition: ‘Really true! Photography and the Promise of Reality’ (”Wirklich wahr! Realitätsversprechen von Fotografien”), Ruhrland Museum in Essen (Catalogue from Hatje Cantz).

WOLFGANG KASCHUBA

(Prof. Dr. rer. soc.) studied empirical cultural science, politics and philosophy in Tübingen. Doctoral thesis in 1982, post-doctoral thesis in 1987. Professor of European Ethnology at Humboldt University and Director of the Institute of European Ethnology in Berlin. Fellow and vice-spokesperson of the transatlantic DFG (German Science Foundation) Graduate Program Berlin - New York, Centre for Metropolitan Studies. Research foci: everyday life and culture in the modern European world, national and ethnic identities, urban and metropolitan research. Publications include: “Overcoming Distance. Time and Space in the Modern (European) Age” (“Die Überwindung der Distanz. Zeit und Raum in der europäischen Moderne”), Series: Europ. Geschichte, Fischer Verlag, Frankfurt a. M. 2004.

MEIKE KRÖNCKE

studied art and cultural science in Lüneburg and Braunschweig and completed a seminar for curators at the Institute for Cultural Studies in Vienna. She is currently working as a scientific assistant at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig and working on her doctoral thesis entitled ”Beyond the Family Romance Towards Constructions of Community and Identity in Photography”. Current focal areas of research: visual science/visual studies, cultural studies, theory of art and culture.
