However, these days many of us book independently, which means you’re not automatically covered – check when booking that your operator is protected in one of these schemes. The risk of airlines going bust is high; some credit cards offer protection on flight bookings over a certain value, while many accommodation-only suppliers have taken out bonds to protect travellers – again you need to ask. None of these schemes are cast-iron guarantees – enquire specifically as to what financial protection is offered and don’t assume you’re covered just because you see the bonding logo. It’s always good to take out travel insurance before you book the flights for further peace of mind.

• ATOL – Air Travel Organisers Licensing T his scheme, run by the Civil Aviation Authority, covers all package holidays booked by travellers that include flights.
