The Mole Antonelliana, the architectural symbol of Torino, was begun in 1863 by Alessandro Antonelli, an architect from Novara. The building was originally meant to be a synagogue but the Municipality of Torino bought it in 1878, while it was still under construction, with the intent of turning it into a monument to national unity. Construction was completed in 1889, not by Antonelli (who died the year before at the age of ninety) but by his son Costanzo. At the time of its completion, at 167.5 meters in height, it was the tallest masonry building in all of Europe. Antonelli worked on the Mole Antonelliana up until his death: the famous pulley lift would hoist the almost 90-year-old architect to the top of his cupola so he could personally oversee construction of the building. Antonelli called his project “a vertical dream.” The panoramic lift – A bird’s–eye view of Torino In 1961, on the occasion of the celebrations honoring the 100th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, a panoramic lift was installed. The lift was renovated in 1999 and now takes visitors up to the “small temple” and the extraordinary 360° view from its balcony over the city and the amphitheatre of the Alps. The ride in the transparent crystal cabin lasts 59 seconds as it ascends through the center of the cupola. There are no intermediate floors between the lift’s departure point at the 10 meter level and its arrival point, 85 meters higher up.

After Accreditation Service The secret of success lies in the last three letters of the name of the company, which originally was an acronym: technology and research. These two specializations best represent a versatile company such as After, having advanced technology in its DNA, as well as continuous research to offer the best tools to its clients. An Italian heart, with headquarters in Rome, marries a world vision, with representative offices in Doha, Shanghai, Luxemburg and Melbourne and projects carried out in over one hundred countries in the five continents. President Andrea Filacchioni explains:

sport events all over the world, but not only that. Our constant search for the best technological tools has led us to develop knowledge that we have applied in several non-sport events, such as political ones. We have created access control and personal identification systems that turn a simple badge into a complex machine able to give a wealth of information. We are leaders in access control technology, which we used from 2003 to 2010 at every European Council meeting held in Brussels, until the secretariat decided to use internal resources in its accreditation and control systems, which we helped design.”

“When we began Internet didn’t exist, but we were already using a similar network. In 1986, thanks to my passion for sailing, we started offering services for accreditation and regatta management for America’s Cup in Australia, the one Azzurra participated in. And we’ve never stopped”.

Not only in Europe, but also at the G7 summit in Naples, G8 summits in Genoa and L’Aquila, as well as several international events and political summits. How can you be efficient at both political and sport events, which imply different situations and require different technologies?

The list of events managed includes soccer world championships in Italy in 1990; world championships in athletics from 1987 to 1991 and then from 1997 to today, without interruptions; all test events of the Winter Olympic Games in Torino 2006; various editions of world swimming championships; Italian Open, Davis Cup and Fed Cup tournaments for tennis; several horse shows and rugby’s Six Nations Championship. So the link between After and sports is very strong, isn’t it? “Yes we have worked and are working at

“Versatility is one of our company’s strengths. Thanks to our technological research team, we are able to supply the best solution for all events, combining technology and advanced systems with user-friendliness, which enables anyone to use our services. In any case, they can be adapted to any request. Here at Football Avenue, for example, we manage the online registration of participants, as well as badge printing, access control and digital scheduling of appointments.”

You were saying that you already used a network when Internet didn’t exist yet. What about now? “All services are integrated in a single, completely Web-based system. A number of servers placed all over the world guarantee security and reliability”. How are your systems structured? Andrea Filacchioni concludes: “Each of our systems is a complete service covering the whole event and including a number of in-house services we provide ourselves. We start by giving advice on accreditation issues and helping organizers plan their event’s management. Then we move on to layout design for badges, lanyards, holograms, pins, signs, luggage tags. At this point a customized software is designed, fully in-house, including a number of services such as online participant registration; advanced access control (based on RFID technology); hotel management systems (with bookings, rooms and meals management), travel and visa management; gifts, gadgets and uniform delivery systems. To this we can add a very advanced transport management system based on RFID and GPS technologies, to help manage car fleets and optimize transport management in general. All systems are fully integrated and their various modules are included in a single database. Finally, during the event, our managers and specialized technicians are available on-site to provide our hardware, software and consumables.”
