A Word Eric Reichard, 2009 Board Chair and Marilyn Thompson, CEO For the past 107 years, Florence Crittenton Services has provided help to vulnerable young women and their children. Our clients come to us facing increasingly complex challenges and issues that go beyond simply being young, single and pregnant. We serve young women in crisis who have experienced issues such as physical, emotional or sexual abuse, homelessness, family or domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness and other serious life situations. Like our clients, FCS faced a number of complex issues throughout the past year. Despite a range of challenges, from severe statewide budget cuts in both North and South Carolina to the tough economic situation our community faces, FCS continued to meet the complicated and diverse needs of the women and families it serves. Eric Reichard Board Chair

A tough year didn’t prevent us from fulfilling our mission of providing health and hope for tomorrow’s children, and it shows: from the successes of our clients to the passion of our supporters, we are buoyed with hope, like our clients, for a brighter tomorrow. The following pages contain just a few of these success stories. The true essence of the work we do can only be witnessed firsthand—in the hands of our volunteers, the hearts of our donors, and the minds of our community advocates. We invite you to get involved with FCS by volunteering, joining us for a tour of our facility or enjoying the events we host. From all of us at FCS, we offer our deepest thanks for your investment with us. Your continued support is needed now more than ever and is appreciated by all of us as we strive to improve the quality of life for young mothers and their children.

Marilyn Thompson CEO

About us Our Mission Florence Crittenton Services of North Carolina promotes health and hope for tomorrow’s children by providing comprehensive health, educational and social services for single pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents, women and their families. Since 1903, FCS has helped more than 38,000 women, babies and their families.

Our History In the early 1900s, a 16-year-old single woman from Charlotte committed suicide upon learning she was pregnant. For this young woman, the shame and disgrace she felt that she brought upon herself and her family was too much to face. Alarmed by the details of the woman’s death, religious leaders and concerned citizens throughout the Carolinas joined forces. They were determined to provide a safe place for single, pregnant women. Philanthropist Charles Crittenton donated funds and requested that the program be named in memory of his daughter, Florence, who died of scarlet fever at the age of four. Since that time, more than 38,000 mothers and their babies have received medical and prenatal care, social, educational, adoption and parenting support services at FCS, as well as substance abuse intervention, treatment and prevention. Because of the continued support of concerned citizens throughout North and South Carolina who want children to have a better quality of life, the agency has remained a viable alternative for young women in crisis.

Our Services Maternity Program

Our 32-bed residential maternity program provides a comprehensive range of intervention and prevention services for women who need a safe and healthy environment during their pregnancy and through delivery. Our clients are high-risk, single young women 10 years of age and older who may also be homeless. Many are victims of sexual and/or physical abuse and neglect. Some have histories of drug and alcohol abuse.

Sarah’s House Program Mother-Child Parenting

The purpose of the Sarah’s House residential parenting program is to keep foster care teen mothers and their children together in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment where the mother can acquire the knowledge and skills she needs to become an effective parent, as well as the skills necessary to promote her own self-esteem and self-sufficiency.

Events for health & hope Precious Movie Premiere

Florence Crittenton Services hosted the premiere of award-winning film “Precious” at Park Terrace Theatre on November 19, 2009. The film details the struggles of an abused, illiterate teen in Harlem. Following the film, FCS led a panel discussion on the harsh realities the film depicted and the ways FCS and other social service agencies work to combat these issues. We give special thanks to the evening’s sponsors: Charlotte Dermatology and Dr. and Mrs. Gary and Charlene Slaughter.

Annual Golf Tournament

November 2, 2009 saw twenty-six teams battle it out at Cedarwood Golf Course as part of Florence Crittenton Services’ Annual Golf Tournament. The fall outing was one of great success for FCS: more than $40,000 was raised in support of our clients and their families. FCS is indebted to the tireless efforts of our tournament committee: Pat Binetti, Chris Moffat, Eric Reichard and Bill Ryans.

Gabourey Sidibe portrayed Claireece “Precious” Jones, an illiterate, abused 16-year-old girl with two children.

Annual Alumni Reunion

Florence Crittenton Services held its first Alumni Reunion in April 2010, made possible by a Front Porch Grant from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation that supports Crossroads Charlotte. More than 200 former clients, staff and volunteers gathered with their families to celebrate the legacy of FCS and the impact it made on their lives. They enjoyed a catered lunch, tours of the facility and reconnecting with friends and FCS staff.

Social Events

Florence Crittenton Services hosted a number of fun events for volunteers, donors, community partners and FCS staff to interact and showcase their generosity. Events included Cocktails for a Cause at Therapy Cafe and Chima Brazilian Steakhouse. Guests enjoyed specialty drinks and meals with proceeds benefiting FCS clients. Thanks to all who attended!

Supporters joined the agency at Chima Brazilian Restaurant.

Annual Luncheon

Florence Crittenton Services’ Annual Luncheon was held on May 4, 2010 and honored long-time supporter Lana Hathaway with the Lucille Giles Award. The Lucille Giles Award, named in honor of the community leader and philanthropist who served FCS for more than four decades, is presented annually to an individual in the Carolinas who has demonstrated a significant commitment to FCS and its clients.

Lana Hathaway accepts the Lucille Giles Award

Lana began volunteering at FCS in 1988 and has chaired or co-chaired the FCS Auxiliary since she joined in 1990. She was chairperson of the Board of Directors for two consecutive terms in 2002 and 2003 and served as an appointed board member from 2002 to 2008. A longtime advocate for FCS in Charlotte and beyond, FCS is proud to call Lana a supporter and friend.

Rose Garden Dedication

Florence Crittenton Services honored steadfast supporter Elizabeth “Lib” Harkey with a rose garden dedication in her honor on October 27, 2009. Lib’s Rosarian, Charles Albuquerque, provided the roses and maintains the garden in her honor. Lib first became involved with FCS in the 1950s and served as president of the Board of Directors for three terms. She chaired 1994’s Campaign for Tomorrow’s Children and is now an honorary board member. Lib is also a recipient of FCS’ Lucille P. Giles Award and Centennial Award.

Elizabeth “Lib Harkey” is greeted by family members Henry and Cathy Harkey,

Movers for Moms

Two Men And A Truck partnered with Florence Crittenton Services at Target’s Blakeney location for the second annual Movers for Moms event on Mother’s Day weekend in May 2010. Community supporters donated new car seats, diapers and other baby necessities to FCS, which was then delivered to the FCS facility by Two Men And A Truck.

FCS Social Worker Michelle Patel helps unload boxes of baby items donated at the annual Movers for Moms event.

FCS gives special thanks to our sponsors Two Men And A Truck, Target, and Praise 100.9. We appreciate the hands-on support of Tripp Moore, owner of Two Men And A Truck’s Charlotte franchise, as well as the refreshments provided by Starbucks and Brixx.

The helping hands Our amazing volunteers did it again! Florence Crittenton Services volunteers really came through for the agency. 700+ volunteers generously gave more than 3,000 hours of their time to benefit FCS clients. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the volunteer groups that supported us throughout the past fiscal year.

A story of hope At Florence Crittenton Services, Becky knew her day would be busy, challenging and exciting. She had an appointment right after breakfast with her personal tutor who was helping her prepare for her SAT’s. Afterward, her mentor was going to pick her up to take her to the library, then for ice cream. She looked forward to her afternoon parenting class where she would learn infant CPR and how to care for her new baby. Becky just loved the volunteer instructor who taught the class; she was always so knowledgable and caring. On her way to dinner, Becky passed a group of volunteers who were painting one of the common areas. She was especially excited about dinner because a local faith-based group was scheduled to bring a special meal and planned to play fun games with the residents afterward. Tomorrow she planned to meet with a vocational program volunteer to help revise her resume so she could begin her job search with more confidence. She was almost tired just thinking about it all, but it made her feel good to know that so many people cared.

NASCAR employees spent a day redecorating Sarah’s House and presented FCS with a generous donation.

During the summer, United Way of Central Carolinas Young Leaders served dinner to FCS clients.

These are just some of the ways our volunteers support our programs. To learn about FCS’ many volunteer opportunities, please contact FCS Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Calvert at 704-372-4663 or mcalvert@fcsnc.org. Jennifer Cook (at right) of Pristine Events gathered friends and threw a holiday party for clients.

Young Friends 2009 saw the renewal of the Young Friends, FCS’ young professionals group. Dedicated to helping the agency via volunteerism, advocacy and philanthropy, the Young Friends was spearheaded by FCS supporter Stacy Gray. In their first few months, they sponsored a Happy Hour and worked to spread awareness among their social groups about the needs of FCS clients and the value of introducing the next generation of supporters to FCS.

Fourteen clients received scholarships through the FCS Auxiliary in 2009-10.
