FIRST FORTNIGHT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF...

Welcome First Fortnight was founded eight years ago by a group of volunteers who recognised a crucial need for more open dialogue around mental health in Ireland. The annual festival has expanded significantly since 2010, however the intention and the passion behind challenging mental health prejudice through arts and cultural action has not waned. The festival continues to grow, with more than 100 events across 17 counties throughout Ireland this January.

PRESENTING PARTNERS

Each year we have been struck by the diversity of artists from Ireland and across Europe creating work that challenges mental health stigma. To that end, First Fortnight has partnered with a number of like-minded organisations across Europe and will host Europe’s Mental Health Arts Festival here in Ireland in January 2019! (See page 19). Since 2012, First Fortnight also runs the First Fortnight Centre for Creative Therapies, which provides art- psychotherapy and music therapy for adults experiencing homelessness and mental ill-health. (See page 4).

Dubbed “the best songwriter that no one has heard of” by legend Ryan Adams in a Rolling Stone interview, Choice Music Prize winner Adrian Crowley has continually stunned fans and newcomers alike in a career spanning 6 albums. First Light is an unmissable opportunity to see a master in action. Nocturnes are no ordinary band. Described by The Irish Times as bringing ‘subtle elements of the fantastical’, their new age noir sounds have been in great demand on the festival circuit. One of RTÉ Culture’s favourite groups, Nocturnes are a must-see. Sorcha Fox is a name synonymous with Leitrim but her recent performances have included the USA and Africa. Her work as an actor, director, activist and writer is always compelling and First Light provides an opportunity to witness it first-hand. (Fri 12 Jan only). Stephen Murphy from Leitrim is well known for putting a finger on the pulse of the issues the Irish face today through a weaving of words. His youtube video performances are greatly anticipated and his poem Was It For This? went viral and is also known for making Gerry Adams cry. (Sat Jan 13 only).

Le Boom, the electronic-pop duo, are well known for creating songs with infectious beats made for dancing. Since forming in the summer of 2016, they’ve played shows to their growing following in New York, Iceland and Ireland.

Fresh from their Choice Music Prize winning success, Rusangano Family headline this mix of the cream of Ireland’s musical talent, all coming out to challenge mental health stigma as part of First Fortnight 2018. The Limerick hip-hop band’s last single, I Know You Know, tackled such stigma head on.

Up-and-coming Dubliner Ailbhe Reddy is also on the bill after a busy summer of festival appearances. Tipped for great things in the very near future, she has garnered glowing praise for her debut EP, Hollowed Out Sea, which has been streamed on Spotify more than a million times.

Barry Hyde was 19 when he first found success with The Futureheads. It was also the year he had his first manic episode. In what promises to be an intimate evening, the frontman behind hits such as Decent Days and Decent Nights will chat to Jim Carroll (RTÉ) and perform songs from Malody, his piano-driven solo album, written to “give an insight into the extreme emotional experience of those battling chronic mental health problems” and which he credits as a big part of his recovery.

Donations As a charity we require year round fundraising to grow the festival programme into new territories across the country and provide free mental health care to people at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. 100% of our box office income and donations are reinvested into those two activities as well as supporting the artists who make the festival programme possible. This year we’ve teamed up with three of the country’s most prolific artists; MORGAN, ADW & SOLUS, to offer these beautiful limited edition prints for all donations of €50+, delivered to your door. Theme: Voices!

OutStraight is a concept based show combining spoken word/hip hop theatre with graffiti.

Hosted by comedian and award-winning broadcaster Colm O’Regan, The Dublin Story Slam (formerly The Moth StorySLAM) is Dublin’s best open mic storytelling night. Everyone has a story to share…

Poets share stories on urban experience and youth culture, bringing to light social and economic situations that the youth of today face.

Audiences gather to hear extraordinary stories told by ordinary Dubliners inspired by a theme... but always personal and always true. Storytellers pop their name into the hat and if picked, get up and share their personal, true 4 – 7 mins stories inspired by the month’s theme… Voices!

The performance is heavily based on story-telling with aspects of emotional truth, aimed at taking the audience on a journey through the eyes of the performer and themselves. This year’s performance will feature acclaimed artist Solus.

of artistic creation connection with the field of mental health seeking to broaden the cultural activities that combat stigma. This project delivered the first edition of the European Mental Health Arts Festival in Athens October 2016 led by our Greek lead partners, EDRA. It also saw satellite festivals in the 4 partner countries, development of tools for the professional support of the artists and for the networking and promotion of the idea of an art & culture festival that focuses on mental health throughout the EU. First Fortnight and its partners oversaw the establishment of the NEFELE Network (Networking European FEstivals for mental Life Enhancement) and the organisation of its founding Congress in Athens, in January 2017 with 22 members currently from 10 countries.

It’s in our nature around here to ask how we can do more. A simple idea of finding a space to come together and share our stories as humans with experiences of mental health problems has now brought us many years along a road that has deepened our understanding of mental health as a cultural and social issue as well as a health concern. As volunteers and citizens, we built our ideas, models and frameworks so we could give them away. Our festival and its well refined production system is like an open source piece of software or architectural design. We don’t want to keep it to ourselves but rather share it so people can use it and do more good with what we have developed. According to estimations from WHO, mental ill health affects every fourth citizen at least once during their life and can be found in more than 10% of the European Union (EU) population during any given year. Just as this year’s festival is spreading its wings across more counties than ever before, our European projects are really gathering a head of steam.

In 2014 First Fortnight began to program sports based discussion events as part of its cultural mission by launching the Corinthian Series. First Fortnight and Corinthian have since established European wide connections through the MENS project and its sister project EVENTS. Both projects are co-funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Sport program and aim to develop collaborations in the fields of Mental Health and Sport.

In 2015, NEFELE was funded by Creative Europe with partners from Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy and Lithuania. It aims to strengthen all kinds

For the first time the festival we will examine aspects of technology and mental health. Indisputably a part of society and modern culture, technology is accessible to a large portion of the population, regardless of age or background. With over 90% of the population now possessing smartphones apps would seem the ‘ideal tool’ to assist those struggling with mental health issues. At this event we will wonder aloud on this topic and with our expert panel consider some important questions. Is technology reshaping how we respond to mental health issues? Who is leading this, the tech or the health industry? When you type ‘mental health’ into the Google Play Store we see page after page of ‘mental health apps’. The options seem endless, but surely this should prompt some questions. What do apps mean to us today in our culture ? What is it we are expecting to happen? Open Doors is a piece of theatre like you’ve never seen. It emerged through a series of workshops consisting of clowning, improv, movement, ensemblebuilding exercises, free-writing, theatre creation, and discussions about mental health difficulties.

The real human experience of mental health difficulties is all around us, but we often don’t see it. This theatre project offers not only a rare glimpse into a hidden world, but is also full of enlightenment and hope. A Face in the Crowd follows the lived experiences of individuals who have come face to face with mental health challenges, and explores stories of darkness, hope, resilience and recovery.

Open Doors gives a unique personal insight into youth mental health difficulties and demonstrates the role that the Arts plays in exploring and expressing these issues. See website for details.

This project is a partnership between the HSE Mental Health Services, the Wexford and Carlow Mental Health Associations, ESB Energy for Generations and The National Lottery.

A night of songs and stories featuring a brilliant line-up of music and spoken word. Acts confirmed so far include Sam Ford, prolific storyteller, First Fortnight alumna Alicia Byrne Keane and the brilliant Felicia Olusanya aka Felispeaks, a spoken word artist whose work comes all the way from Nigeria via Longford. Music on the night will include Irishbased Scotsman Malcolm Urquhart, better known as The Lost Gecko, the young and talented Rachel Grace, authentic grassroots grown troubadour, Gavin Mee and Shiftwork, a talented trio who play quirky, haunting and strangely beautiful songs.

“Sally + Stephen + 2 bottles of Malbec = Heidi. Heidi has only been around for six months, but she is already in charge…” An unexpected pregnancy has changed Sally’s life. But at least she still gets to see her friends (in photos) and to wash her hair (but not condition it). Mum, mam, madre, mutter… whatever you go by, it’s the most difficult job you’ll ever have. This humorous one-woman show, written and performed by Gilly O Shea, will premiere as part of First Fortnight 2018.

A former punk turned Buddhist priest in Japan who has made a career out of counselling suicidal people finds himself at a crossroads, leading him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living?

The Departure will be preceded by the short film THROWLINE

€9.50 32 PIlls will be preceded by the short film HUM

A HBO documentary by Hope Litoff, which premiered at the 2017 Cork Film Festival, 32 Pills tells the story of her sister Ruth’s death by suicide. Having discovered her sister’s notes and artwork in her Manhattan loft, Hope documents her sister’s struggles and her own in the aftermath of her death.

One of the major discoveries of 2017, Emmy-winning filmmaker Lana Wilson (After Tiller) directs a beautiful, wise and deeply empathetic immersion into one fascinating character’s unique approach to suicide prevention.

The film aims to start a conversation about stigma surrounding mental health issues and supports for those struggling and those bereaved.

Throwline is the story of a group of taxi drivers in Co Kilkenny who came together to form a suicide prevention group. Uniquely positioned to patrol the night, the drivers keep vigil over the city’s streets and bridges and offer help to those who feel forlorn.

The Public Diary began at First Fortnight 2017 as an interactive installation. Notebooks were installed in public toilets as a means of allowing people to externalise their interior thoughts within a safe space, free of judgment or fear. This exercise has strong ties to the concept of catharsis; the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. The Public Diary is now in it’s second year of development and aims to broadcast the voices of those who have shared previously. Through facilitating and now exhibiting this creative means of expression as a library of public entries, artist Milena Matejko aims to build connection, compassion and a sense of closeness to those around you. Highlighting the most personal and impactful entries through an interactive multimedia installation the artist creates a safe, comfortable space in which the public can engage with the work.
