Farming Life Sustains Early Settlers Farming was the primary occupation of Franklin County’s early settlers. The two main immigrant farmers of Franklin County were Scots-Irish and German. Both farmed for sustenance, but their approach to farming was different. The Scots-Irish farmer was a generalist and jack-of-all-trades. He was a hunter and a trapper. He took the skills that he learned from the farmstead and developed a new skill or trade to step into another way to make a living. German farmers were specialists. They came from generations of farmers and gravitated to the limestone soil of Franklin County’s valley because it was like the soils of the farms where they learned their skills. They used the types and quantities of trees to determine where to settle. German immigrants knew hardwoods like oak, maple, beech, hickory, and black walnut, were signs of fertile, limestone soil. German farmers laid roots throughout Franklin County, applying their methods of farming and making a lasting contribution to the county’s agricultural heritage. The earliest settlers selected land close to timber and near water power, so a sawmill and a gristmill could be built. These mills were usually built first, even before churches, drew settlers, and increased the value of land. As more settlers arrived in frontier Franklin County, it disturbed the hunting grounds of the Lenni Lenape and strained friendly relationships. Settlers constructed fortifications around homes and mills to protect against raids. Chambers Fort protected the plantation settlement of Benjamin Chambers. It was built in 1756 and survived the era of Indian raids because it encompassed the water power and mills, included cannons and used a lead roof. Around the same time, Fort Davis, near Welsh Run on Casey’s Knob in Southern Franklin County, was built to protect the plantation of Philip Davis. Fort McDowell, built in 1755 near Markes, protected McDowell’s Mill and also served as a staging area for British militia.

It is 11/30! 11/30 Visitors Center is the name of the Franklin County Visitors Bureau’s new home. Long before the visitors bureau took up residence in the former National Bank of Chambersburg, built in 1865, 11/30 was the intersection of the Molly Pitcher and Lincoln Highways. It is the Crossroads of the Country, where two major American transportation routes meet, both with storied history throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Route 11–the Molly Pitcher Highway– and Route 30–the Lincoln Highway meet in the center of Franklin County on Memorial Square of Chambersburg. In the 18th century, 11/30 was the crossroads of the nation as Scots-Irish and German immigrants pushed the boundary of the frontier westward. As the century moved forward, 11/30 was a colonial gateway transporting early Americans toward their dreams of a better life. 11/30 was bustling with taverns and inns; liveries, wheelwrights, and blacksmiths, and stores with all forms of supplies for the journey to a new life. In the 19th century, steam power brought the trains and 11/30 served as a busy hub for the newest mode of transportation. When Civil War touched the nation, the square of Chambersburg was the meeting place of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his Commander of the Third Corps, General A.P. Hill. On this site, the Confederate leaders conferred on movement of the Union troops, changed plans to move towards Harrisburg, and decided to move east toward Gettysburg. The pivotal history that followed is well-known. Then, on July 30, 1864, a year later Confederates returned to Chambersburg, ransomed the town, and with the ransom not met, burned the core of town. American spirit prevailed, and the town rebuilt. At the beginning of the 20th century, Americans discovered the automobile and the individual freedom it brought. Their travels brought to 11/30, the meeting point of the two of the oldest routes in America. In the early 1900s, the Washington Hotel, just one block east of the Chambersburg square, was a state-of-the-art hotel for travelers, hosting famous entertainers like Jimmy Stewart, Enrico Caruso, Mary Pickford, and Douglass Fairbanks. It was known as the best in the Cumberland Valley and equaled by few from Chambersburg to Pittsburgh. 11/30 is Main Street America, reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell scene. It is parades, festivals, and First Fridays. 11/30 is the launching point to explore Franklin County’s trails of history, art and architecture, recreation, natural beauty, fresh foods and the warm hospitality of communities like Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg, and Waynesboro.

West of the Susquehanna: The Conococheague Settlement
A Blunston License
Franklin County settlers coming prior to 1735 received a special license for their tract of land. These licenses were called Blunston licenses after the issuer, Samuel Blunston. In Franklin County, the original area of settlement was known as the Conococheague Settlement. The license gave the settler the right to cross the Susquehanna and settle on land. It served as a promise to an option to deed or patent the land as soon as the Penn Family could negotiate an agreement with the Indians west of the Susquehanna.

Social Struggles of a Young Nation: A History Tour of Franklin County
Slavery, the Underground Railroad, John Brown, and the Civil War tested America by pushing it to consider its values and the meaning of freedom. Chapters of American history played out across Franklin County. The county’s proximity to the Mason-Dixon Line catalyzed significant chapters of American history, impacted residents’ sentiments, and even brought war to their door steps. The tour begins at the John Brown Chambersburg Heritage Center, 100 Lincoln Way East Chambersburg, where Franklin County’s architectural, transportation, frontier, Underground Railroad, and Civil War history are portrayed. Highlighting this stop is the larger-than-life, 8-ft. tall and gold-leafed statue if Benjamin Franklin, which formerly sat atop the Franklin County courthouse. Also, a nearly full-sized replica biplane hangs from the ceiling of the Heritage Center to honor the first flight over Franklin County in 1911. Next stop is the Franklin County Old Jail, constructed in 1818 and serving as Franklin County jail until 1970. Inside learn about crime and punishment in the 1800s, explore dungeons and cell blocks, and see the cell that held John Cook, one of John Brown’s raiders, who was ultimately hanged for his participation in the raid on Harpers Ferry. A few doors down from the Old Jail is the Mary Ritner Boarding House, often referred to as the John Brown House. It is the place where abolitionist John Brown spent several months in the summer of 1859 receiving supplies and recruiting for his raid on Harpers Ferry. It served as the northern headquarters of John Brown’s Raid and is a National Park Service Network to Freedom site. Travel to Greencastle PA and head to Allison Antrim Museum on South Ridge Avenue in Greencastle. It is the former home of Alexander Irwin and is a Pennsylvania Civil War Trails site, offering an exceptional view of The Mary Ritner Boarding House the history leading up 8 │GREAT MOMENTS
to the Civil War. In its collection is an authentic iron slave collar, once worn around the neck of a slave named Ben. It is a tangible artifact of the cruelty of slavery. Also included in the museum collection are signatures from former PA governors, paintings by African American artist Walter Washington Smith, and a display of Civil War artifacts. This area is the main artery for the invasion of Pennsylvania leading up Ben Franklin Statue at to the Gettysburg Campaign. Chambersburg Heritage Final stop on Social StrugCenter gles in an Emerging Nation is the Monterey Pass Battlefield Museum, just outside of Waynesboro on Route 16. The Battle of Monterey Pass was fought along a mountain ridge in a blinding thunderstorm during the late hours of July 4th and the early hours of July 5th, 1863--just one day after the Battle of Gettysburg. It spilled into Maryland and is the only battle to be fought on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. The battlefield adjoins the museum and offers four walking trails that vary from easy to somewhat strenuous. The Monterey Trail, the most difficult, ends with the views from the Monterey Pass Outlook.

The Old Jail:
Holds History, is History, Makes History
1864: The Ransoming, Burning & Rebirth of Chambersburg On July 30, 1864, Brigadier General John McCausland and 2,800 Confederate cavalrymen entered Chambersburg and executed the order delivered by General Jubal Early. He demanded ransom of $100,000 in gold and $500,000 in Yankee dollars in retaliation for burning of private property in the Shenandoah Valley. Around 5:30 AM on July 30, Confederate artillery fired over the town. McCausland led his men into the town square, sat down to breakfast with his chief officers at the Franklin House, and ordered the arrest of leading citizens to hear the ransom demand. Along the main streets, Confederate soldiers warned townspeople of their fate, if the ransom was not delivered. Chambersburg did not meet the ransom demand and the town was fired. By the time the fire subsided, more than 2000 people were homeless. Over 550 building were destroyed and loss of real estate and personal property was over $1.6 million. Chambersburg rebuilt, and by 1868, had completed a large amount of reconstructing the town. The census of 1860 shows population as 5255 and in 1870 it grew 20% to 6308. In the words of Franklin County namesake, Benjamin Franklin, “While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us.” Each year, Franklin County celebrates the rebirth of Chambersburg with the 1864 Weekend, always the third weekend of July. Friday evening kicks off the weekend with a Civil War Ball at Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle. On Saturday, Old Market Day fills the streets of downtown Chambersburg. In the evening, the town prepares to step back to 1864 with walking tours and history presentations. Next is the finals of A Cappella & Unplugged—a talent competition inspired by the spirit of people who rebuilt the community. Finally, as darkness approaches, the 1864 light show and re-enactment brings to life the ransoming, burning and rebirth of Chambersburg.
If the walls of the Franklin County Old Jail could talk, the stories would be mesmerizing. Located at 175 East King Street in Chambersburg PA, the Old Jail celebrates 200 years in 2018. Built in 1818 as Franklin County’s third jail, the property’s exterior appearance illustrates the balance and proportion of Georgian architecture. Inside, the old cell walls bear the hand-scratched messages of former inmates, who marked off the time they served and recorded their misgivings. It housed debtors, thieves, and murderers. The gallows sit in the limestone exercise yard. Over the years, folklore retells that the Old Jail housed freedom seekers within its walls. It definitely secured John Cook, one of John Brown’s conspirators, before he was transported to Charles Town for his trial and, in the end, his hanging. Just a few years later, in 1862, the Old Jail stood as J.E.B Stuart burned the nearby shops of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Even during the 1864 burning of Chambersburg, it was again left untouched as the flames fired by “Tiger” John McCausland destroyed the majority of the town. In 1971, after serving more than 150 years as the Franklin County Jail, the Old Jail was retired. Today, the physical property houses the Franklin County Historical Society, serving as a museum house and genealogy archive.

Renfrew Museum & Park
Farmers settled at the base of South Mountain, starting communities like Quincy, Mont Alto, and Waynesboro. In Waynesboro, Renfrew Museum and Renfrew Institute, both housed on more than 100-acres of Renfrew Park, 1010 East Main Street, interpret German lifestyle and culture. Renfrew Institute offers a variety of environmental and nature-based experiences, including owl walks, Shakespeare in the Park and Earth Day. The museum provides tours of the 1812 Royer Farmhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can also explore a self-guided tour of the farmstead, using QR tags on display throughout the park. By the mid-1800s, the new generation of farmers saw their occupation differently and considered inventions that would expand their ability to farm. These inventions transformed agriculture. Waynesboro Industrial Museum, 235 Philadelphia Avenue, tells the stories of these resourceful men—inventors like George Frick, Peter Geiser, John Metcalfe, and Abe and Frank Landis. struggles, rivalries, and successes spread throughout the museum. The museum, located in a former church designed by Frank F Landis, showcases Waynesboro industry, including Geiser Manufacturing, Frick Manufacturing, Landis Machine and Landis Tool Companies. Today, Frick continues worldwide as Johnson Controls. Travel the 10-miles across South Mountain, on 233 North, to Preserving Our Heritage Archives and Museum. The drive shows the landscape frontiersmen, slaves, and Civil War soldiers traversed. Preserving Our Heritage Archives and Museum is in a former schoolhouse and is dedicated to educating the public about life on the mountain. It has an archive of the Mont Alto Forestry School and Mont Alto Ironworks and a collection of original newspapers from 1850 to 1923. The site also offers a relocated 1930 to 1950 general store with lots of old-fashioned favorites. Travel south on 233 to Mont Alto State Park, the oldest state park in Pennsylvania. PA Forest Fire Museum
The 1854 Emmanuel Chapel is just off Route 233 on the campus of Penn State Mont Alto. John Brown taught Sunday school and worshipped in the chapel shortly before his historic raid on Harpers Ferry. John Cook, one of Brown’s raiders, was captured just steps from the chapel. The chapel was purchased in 1922 and renovated by Penn State. The final stop is the PA Forest Fire Museum at Caledonia State Park, the second oldest park in PA. The museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the heritage of forest fire protection and honoring Pennsylvania’s pioneers in forest stewardship. With displays and interactive exhibits, visitors can trace the past and point to the future of forestry while enjoying a variety of Smokey Bear keepsakes, such as lunch boxes and salt and pepper shakers.

Early Waynesboro Waynesboro was established by the Wallace Family, first in 1749 when John Wallace settled near the East Branch of Antietam Creek, where he had title to nearly a square mile of land. He named his holdings Mt. Vernon. When he died, his son Robert inherited the land and shortly passed it to his brother George. George conveyed it to his brother John, after he returned from the Revolutionary War. At this time, the land was called Wallaces’ Town.

John Bourns emigrated from Scotland with his parents in 1751 and eventually acquired 172 acres along the East Branch of Antietam Creek in Roadside, about 3 miles east of Waynesboro. He established a sawmill, home, and blacksmith shop on the land. As a blacksmith, Bourns made his The placard at the burial contribution to the site of John Burns Revolutionary War by making a wrought iron cannon. Cannons, at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, were scarce. Only those used by local militia were available. As the war moved forward, colonists captured cannons from the British, received them from the French, and or forged their own, as Bourns did. He, also, served in the Continental Army. Henry Bonebrake was a teacher in Waynesboro when the Civil War began. He enlisted in the 17th Pennsylvania in 1862. During the Battle of Five Forks, on April 1, 1865, he captured the Confederate color bearer’s flag in hand-tohand combat. For this act of bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Lieutenant Henry Bonebrake is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.
John Wallace waited until 1797 to lay out the town and sell lots. He officially named the town Waynesburg, in honor of Mad Anthony Wayne, who he served under in the Revolutionary War. The waters in Franklin County are great for fishing, kayaking, and just having fun.
Gr eat Fishing! Falling Springs is a small limestone spring creek, flowing about four miles before joining with the Conococheague Creek. The constant water temperature provides year-round fishing. It offers wild rainbow and brown trout from the spring to Interstate 81, where it is not stocked. Some of the rainbows get to be 20 inches and larger. A good part of the Falling Spring flows through picturesque meadows. The habitat supports a diversity of mayflies, caddisflies and midges for warm-weather fishing. The downtown section offers both stocked browns and an increasing population of wild rainbows and brown trout. Fly fisherman nationwide recognize the Falling Springs as one of the best limestone waters in the East.

Another excellent source of rainbow and brown trout is the East Branch of Antietam Creek, near Waynesboro. The stocked fishing area begins at the Route 16 bridge and continues downstream for one mile to Welty Road. It is a catch and release fishing spot.
F l oating & Kayaking The waters of Franklin County can be smooth or challenging. The Conococheague Creek has multiple points to drop in including spots near Rabbit Run Creek and Martins Mill Park in Greencastle. An easy float when the waters are lower, it picks up speed when water levels are higher. Long Pine and Letterkenny Reservoirs are good spots to enjoy kayaking. In fall, surrounded by the red, yellow and orange foliage is breathtaking. Golfers Love Franklin County Penn Nationals two championship, 18-hole courses--Founders and Iron Forge--always rank high in the nation's leading golf publications. Whitetail Golf is 225 Acres of views and the challenges of a mountainside course. Pack up the clubs and enjoy one of Franklin County’s 9-hole or 18-hole courses. With easy access from I-70 to I-81, the PA Turnpike and Route 30, Franklin County is a golfer’s dream.
Take To The Trail! Cowans Gap State Park has more than 13 miles of hiking trails varying from an easy 1.5-mile walk around the lake on the Lakeside Trail to a variety of more difficult hikes. Plessinger Trail, rocky in places, winds along Aughwick Creek and offers a chance to fish, bird or look for wildlife. Tuscarora Trail cuts through Cowans Gap Park and is blazed orange. To begin hiking a 1.5-mile section of the Tuscarora Trail, go to parking lot 3 across from Aughwick Road. Climb along Tuscarora Mountain to the Geyer Trail junction. From here, it is easy to retrace steps back to the starting point or follow Geyer Trail to Cameron Trail then to Plessinger Trail. Another option is to take Tuscarora Trail another 2.4 miles south to the top of Big Mountain. It is a stunning view of the Path Valley of Franklin County that can stand with the best vistas in the state. It is an old line of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Walkers, bikers, joggers, and horseback riders can access the trail at Shippensburg Township Park on Britton Road; it is about 10 miles. Hikers can enjoy the Appalachian Trail in Franklin County. It crosses the Waynesboro area and Caledonia State Park near Fayetteville. Waynesboro is an Appalachian Trail community and day hikers can pick up the trail near the Old Forge Picnic Area or at Caledonia State Park. At Caledonia, the AT climbs steeply and levels out as it moves towards the central point of the trail, located in Pine Grove furnace State Park. Be sure to stop by the Appalachian Trail Museum. Winter Wonderland Winter is a great time to get out and take on the land of Franklin County. Outside it is one of the prettiest times and inside one of the coziest. Skiing at Whitetail is always an option, plus all ages can enjoy tubing. Caledonia State Park offers 10-miles of trails, plus open field areas, suitable for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Mont Alto State Park, also, allows cross country skiing. An area of the lake at Cowans Gap, near the beach, is set aside for ice-skating. Hunting The land of Franklin County also offers deer, turkey and other small game hunting. The Tuscarora State Forest and Michaux State Forest offer acre after acre of small game and deer habitat. Mercersburg is a beautiful town with a colonial flavor. Many of the properties in downtown Mercersburg were built from 1780 to 1830 and can be enjoyed on the historic walk of Mercersburg. Mercersburg Inn is a good launching point to explore the historic walk. Located, just off the Main Street, the Inn is a chance to step back in time and relax. Grab your bike and take to one of the cycling trails that lead to some of the most gorgeous views in the eastern U.S. Try the Punch Bowl Loop. It is a good workout. Begin at Park Avenue/ Corner Road and turn right onto Blue Spring Road. Stop at Blue Spring Buffalo Farm; the buffalo come right up to the pasture fence. Another must-see is the alpaca at Long Acre Alpaca Farm. Now back to biking‌ as the road winds up to the top of the Punch Bowl, the views of the valley and the Two Top Mountain are a simply beautiful. The trip is about 14.5 miles. A trip to Buchanan State Park is a chance to see the 600-lb pyramid shaped tribute to 15th President James Buchanan. For fishing enthusiasts, it is a chance to do a little wild trout fishing in Bucks Run, a tributary of the West Branch of the Conococheague. Hikers can take to the Tuscarora Trail. It cuts through Buchanan Birthplace State Park and can be followed to Cowans Gap State Park for a good hiking or backpacking trip. See the QR tag for a Tuscarora Trail map. Mercersburg is an outstanding destination to get outdoors, move, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Definitely, remember Whitetail Resort. In winter, it is fun for skiing and snow tubing. New for 2018 will include the Totem Pole Playhouse Academy. This specialty program will help actors with screen tests, headshots and more. This will join their normal season nd children’s summer camps which teach acting games, exercises, improv and techniques.
Totem Pole Playhouse is one of the last remaining summer theaters in Pennsylvania. In 2017, the theater took in $1 million in ticket sales, a goal that has not been achieved in years, according to Rowan Joseph, artistic director.

In downtown Waynesboro, studios filled with artwork line the streets and live music fills the air Friday nights in the summer. But before 2013, this was not always the case. There were empty storefronts and quiet weekend nights. Through the work of the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro, art is flourishing in Waynesboro. “Our focus is supporting not just physical art but performing art, music and bringing them to the community to showcase them for everyone,” said Kathyrn Gratton, executive director.
Joseph, who began working as the playhouse’s artistic director in 2013, said that he believes that partnership with local organizations and group tours are the way to keep the arts alive. “Working with community doesn’t just mean we are seeing what is out there but we are looking for ways to

A crowning jewel of downtown Chambersburg, the Capitol Theatre has kept audiences coming back and helped to start a promising acting future for future generations. This 1927 theater hasn’t lost any of its former charm with many of its original features still intact. Once a movie house and performing arts theater, it still hosts live performances, live film screenings and special events. The theater is also host to the Chambersburg Ballet School and Chambersburg Community Theatre. Jon Meyer, executive director and manager, said one of his primary goals is to make the arts more visible in town.

Owner Alison Welch started this center in 2012, after teaching pre-school and realizing that the part she found the most enjoyable was helping children express themselves creatively. “Children learn through play not through worksheets,” Welch said. “It’s very important they were able to express themselves and make a big

For artistic performance, the Cumberland Valley School of Music has been the beginning place for lifelong learning as well as continuing the fundamentals since 1990. Executive Director Paula Hepfer says the mission remains as strong as ever since she co-founded the school. “I think that artistic expression and the need for it is universal,” Hepfer said. “It is not a respecter of station or financial capacity or ethnicity. I think it’s innate in anyone and at CVSM we really seek to meet people wherever they are so we have early childhood classes from birth to senior citizens.” Classes stretch from introduction to music to instrumental or vocal lessons, theater and private lessons. One of the goals that Hepfer said she made while first starting was to be able to meet the needs of the at-risk community as well, including scholarships and music therapists for children with special needs.

For fledgling and experienced potters, the Nicodemus Center for Ceramic Studies is the place to be in Franklin County. The center has two separate campuses for pottery-making, including a workshop at the Penn State Mont Alto Campus and their workshop with storefront on South Church Street in Waynesboro. The organization originally started out in 1994 to preserve folk pottery in the Cumberland and Shenandoah Valleys, according to Mary AsheMahr, Director. The organization focused more on becoming a pottery guild and educating in the mid-2000’s under their former Executive Director James Smith. “We have really escalated the education,” Ashe-Mahr said. “We are trying very hard so that people can grow in art. There is always more to learn. We now offer classes and have a really wonderful storefront where we have guild members pottery.” Guild memberships are available as

Find it in Franklin County! Always Something a Little Different Auctions, art and antiques are the best places to find one-of-a-kind gifts and treasures. Pair them up or focus on one for some of Franklin County’s best browsing and buying experiences. Auctions are great fun exciting, and different every time. Gateway Gallery Auction, off Exit 14 of I-81, concentrates on live auction sales of specialty antiques and collectibles. There is 10,000 sq. ft. in three showrooms. Auctions are typically the first and third Monday each month, plus Memorial Day and Labor Day. Another place for collectibles and real estate sales is Kenny’s Auction, on Route 11 in Chambersburg. Auctions are typically Fridays. More than 800 pieces of local, regional and national art is on display throughout the galleries of Destination ARTS! in downtown Waynesboro. Great for weekend shopping, these include Gallery 50 on West Main, 42 West ARTS Co-op & Gallery, Ceramics Center of Waynesboro on Church Street, and Gallery 35 on East Main. In downtown Chambersburg, The Foundry and Garage Studio are also co-op art and craft galleries. Throughout these co-op galleries, shoppers will find varied forms of painting, photography, wind chimes pottery, and jewelry to give a truly unique gift or even a self-gift. Want to make it yourself? Check out upcoming project classes at Joyful Arts Studio in Greencastle and Chambersburg Council for the Arts. Antiquing is a little different for everyone. Some antiquers are nostalgic; others are collectors. Some enjoy a rare find at a bargain price; others are just looking for an amazing find to liven up their living space. Whatever the reason, the place to come is Franklin County for excellent antiquing. Fayetteville Antique & Craft Mall, located at 3653 Lincoln Way East offers more than 350 dealers and is open every day of the week, 9 AM to 5 PM. Nearby at the Chambersburg Mall on 997, Exit 20 of I-81, is Black Rose Antique & Collectibles. Also, open every day of the week, it is a fantastic selection for treasure hunters. In Greencastle, off Exit 5 of I-81, is the Greencastle Antique Mall on Washington Street. Hundreds of dealers in 15,000 sq. ft.-historic manufacturing property, dating back to 1870. Antiquers will love the old, new, and re-purposed variety. It is open every day, except Wednesdays. A little further south on Route 316 is James and Jess’ House of Goods in Waynesboro, 37 W. Main. It has 8000 sq. ft. of antiques, vintage, and artisans.

Greencastle PA is a shopper’s destination. It is an easy walk from shop to shop with eateries like Pure & Simple, B Street 104, and El Sombrero to grab a bite and refresh in the downtown area. Nearby on Route 11 is the John Allison Public House and Mikie’s Ice Cream & Green Cow Shop. The Greencastle town clock, built in 1872, marks the square of town and is near two stalwarts of downtown Greencastle--E.L.M. Department Store and E.L.M. Shoes. E.L.M. Department Store began in the 1930s in the Great Depression as a “store on wheels” and moved to its permanent location on center square in 1941. Today, it is a family clothing store, specializing in clothing for men, women and children. Plus, it offers made in the USA and big and tall for men. E.L.M. Shoes adjoins the department store, so customers can complete an outfit or style from head to toe. More that 18,000 pairs of shoes in stock! The home of B Street 104 Restaurant and Pub on Baltimore Street in Greencastle is an historical landmark and has experienced several name changes in its more than 200 years of history. The original building, known as The Antrim House, was replaced in 1904 with a three-story building called the Hotel McLaughlin. As moving pictures became popular, the Gem Theater was added onto the building in 1911 for the enjoyment of the community. By the mid-1970s, a popular restaurant gave it back it original name, The Antrim House, until 2005. B Street 104’s current owner, Kevin Benner, and his crew gutted and renovated the building, preserving when possible, original metal walls, tile flooring, decorative ceilings, and stained-glass windows. The walls of the dining room highlight the history of the building and Greencastle with historic prints by Pennsylvania artist Mark Twain Noe, along with old theater playbills and posters, copies of a 1940s parts manual to the movie theater’s projector, and a copy of the original deed dated 1796, all of which were discovered during the renovation project.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Friday and Saturday nights are always special in Greencastle because the B Street 104 Restaurant and Pub and the John Allison Public House offer good food, adult beverages and live entertainment. Come for the food, then stay for the music and comradery.
Today, the restaurant features open seating, two meeting rooms and a banquet hall for special occasions with the family or business, and a well-stocked L-shaped bar. Its menu is best described as American Franklin County Visitors Guide | 33
Franklin County has no shortage of dining venues that offer old-fashioned, comfort food “just like mother used to make,” and the best part is you don’t need to drive far to find a favorite of locals. Just follow them; you may find a new favorite as well. Everyone knows about the Battle of Gettysburg, but few have ever heard of the Battle of Monterey Pass. It occurred as the Confederate Army was retreating from Gettysburg through South Mountain near Rouzerville in the two days following the more famous battle. Now, mix the history of the battle with a family restaurant and you get the Monterey Pass Pub and Eatery, featuring the ambiance of the Civil War.
Bob Backer, the owner of Blondie’s Tavern in Rouzerville, was struggling with his need for a more family-friendly dining atmosphere than what is offered at Blondie’s when he remembered the historical significance of his tavern’s location. Soon the space next to Blondie’s became the Monterey Pass Pub and Eatery. In the lobby of the restaurant, exhibits give a brief overview of the historic battle and Sandwiches and burgers bear the names of Confederate and Union officers who fought at Gettysburg. Other entrees include seafood and their own barbequed meats, which are smoked on site. Both Blondie’s and Monterey Pass use the same menus anad both have a bar for drinks. You choose the atmosphere you prefer for dining. Across the Cumberland Valley at the base of Tuscarora Mountain outside Mercersburg, there is another restaurant sitting in a very different historical area.The Foot of the Mountain Restaurant is close to the birthplace of the 15th President James Buchanan. At the time of

Buchanan’s birth, this area was on the edge of the American frontier, but his family homestead was the center of frontier commerce with a complex of cabins, barns, stables, storehouses, a general store, and an orchard. Pioneers traveling through here stopped to rest and replenish their supplies. When Buchanan was six years old, his father moved the family and business to Mercersburg. Foot of the Mountain Restaurant is a full-service family restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Most of the menu selections are made fresh in the kitchen, using fresh local produce and meats. The owners are now second and third generations from the founders and carry on the traditions and recipes used by their parents and grandparents. Diners can enjoy the homemade sausage, crab cakes, corn fritters, along with outstanding desserts! Their slogan, “Love at first bite.” holds as true today as it did when the restaurant began.
No one should ever walk away hungry from the Velvet Café. With a vast selection and reasonable prices, even the pickiest of eaters will find something they like. Not hungry for a full meal? The Velvet Café is THE place in Waynesboro to enjoy a specialty sundae or a slice of homemade pie. It truly is comfort food to the “max”! Another place for great ice cream after the ball game, on the last day of school, on the first day of summer, or for no reason at all, visit Cabin on King in Shippensburg. Order your favorite milk shake, sundae, smoothie, cone or dish at the walk-up window. Then, enjoy it in the outdoor garden patio behind the log cabin...which just happens to be on King Street. Whether you are looking for that pick-me-up morning cup of coffee, mid-day lunch spot or end-of-day wind-down, the Big Oak Café is the perfect place to go. Located in the Butcher Shop on Stouffer Avenue in Chambersburg, the Big
Oak CafĂŠ offers wonderful breakfast options and sandwiches by the half or whole, salads, soups, and an assortment of coffees, lattes, mochas, tea, freshly squeezed fruitade, smoothies and milk shakes. For something different, try their cheese or chocolate fondue for 2 or 4 people. Everything is made fresh on site.
Franklin County offers many ethnic restaurants, serving foods from Mexico, Italy, Japan, Asia, India, Korea. For several years, Inka Kitchen on Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg has introduced this area to Peruvian cuisine along with entreĂŠs from the Caribbean and other Latin and South American countries. The flavors and spices used would almost make believe you were eating in a restaurant at the foot of Machu Picchu in Peru. The restaurant is brightly decorated with cloth typical of our neighbors south of the border. The menu items are listed by their Spanish names, but thankfully, are well described in English. If you still have questions, the staff is very helpful and friendly. A sister restaurant called Square One recently opened on the square in Chambersburg and has been receiving rave reviews as well. Both Inka Kitchen and Square One are owned by a husband and wife team from Peru and are doing an excellent job in bringing at taste of South America to Franklin County.
John Allison Public House The John Allison Public House is a good spot for lunch, dinner, or an evening wind-down. Whether it a burger, a steak, or seafood to satisfy a craving, John Allison Public House has it! Monday is Miller Lites and fried chicken. Tuesday is Beer Club Night. Wednesday is Burger Night. Thursday is Yuengs and Wings. Fridays is All Day Troeg Pints for $5. Bring the whole family on Sunday for brunch from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Trickling Springs Creamery, east of Chambersburg on Route 30, has the look of a classic country dairy and creamery where a pledge of quality and purity was at the heart of every product. Trickling Springs is taking this old-fashioned pledge and applying it to its 21st-century dairy business. Good dairy products start with good milk cows. Trickling Springs uses 575,000 pounds of milk each week from 29 organic farms. All the milk is local and regional, within a two-hour radius, and comes from grass-fed, synthetic hormone-free cows. This is the reason and the sensibility…now try the food. The ice cream, in flavors like Buttermilk Blueberry and Salted Dark Chocolate Chunk, is amazing. The butter makes the best cookies. The cheese pops with flavor. The milk is creamy and even comes in chocolate. Bring a cooler—not the soft one…the big one!

Franklin County has an abundance of farm market experiences. Three are Country Breeze on Route 11, which is year-round, indoors, and open Monday through Saturday; North Square Farmers Market in downtown Chambersburg is open May through October on Saturdays and is outdoors; and Jim’s Farmers Market, on Grant Street in Chambersburg is an indoor market and open throughout the year on Fridays and Saturdays. Check out one of these or one of the many listed in the Franklin Fresh Food & Dining Guide—this book—to discover fresh fruits and vegetables, pastries, plus more treats and surprises.
Olympia Candy Kitchen, on South Main Street is a family-owned candy store, specializing in smallbatch chocolate, hand-dipped strawberries, and chocolate covered bacon. Founded in 1903, Olympia’s chocolates and caramels are made with the same family recipes generation after generation. Pair up the lovely chocolate flavors with a glass of wine. Tuscarora Mountain Winery, located ½-block from Memorial Fountain on Lincoln Way West, is a family-owned
winery, specializing in locally sourced fruit wines. It even offers 1864 The Burning, a red wine that remembers the Civil War history of Chambersburg and honors the towns rebuilding.
Calling all turophiles…that is cheese lovers! Whispering Brook Cheese Haus, on Edenville-Cheesetown Road in Chambersburg, is a cheese lover’s dream. Using both cow and goat milk in its cheese, variety is incredible at the Cheese Haus. There are so many varieties of cheddar—sharp, dill and bacon, Italian seasoned, garlic and chive, jalapeno, smoked, apple, and blueberry varieties. Other cow-milk cheeses are Havarti and Longhorn Colby. Creamy, delicious goat cheese is another Cheese Haus specialty, plus raw local honey, jams, and preserves.
Just off of North Main Street on Grant Street is Chambersburg’s newest winery, Jan Zell Wines. Opening at the end of 2015, Jan Zell offers a wide variety of its regular and special wines from sweet to dry in the Grant Street tasting room. Plus, each week, there is a slate of fun, including Trivia, music, and paint nights, New on the wine list is a dessert wine, Chocolate Orange Drop. Another favorite of the tasting room is Jan Zell Hard Ciders, using local apples from Shatzers Orchards, in sweet, dry, and hopped.
Roy Pitz Brewing Company and Beer Stube on Third Street, is an easy, 5-minute walk via Kennedy Street. Roy Pitz started crafting beer in 2008. A longstanding favorite is Best Blonde. It is joined seasonally by a variety of returning brews plus the flagships Daddy Fat Sacks and Sour Hound.
A good way to end a food tour is the way it started…with ice cream. Windy Knoll Market and Creamery on Spring Valley Road, off Route 30, has fresh produce, bulk foods, beautiful flowers, and Windy Knoll Ice Cream in great flavors like Rum Raisin, Turtle, and Peanut Butter Overload. The hard part will be deciding on the cone. Should it be a pretzel cone, M&M cone, a chocolate cookie cone, or a chocolate chip cone?
Save a few caramels to pair with the brews at GearHouse Brewing Co. It is a special spot in one of the old properties of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. It is a fun space to relax and enjoy craft beers. The brew master is always rotating and adding new beers but is dedicated to flavorful, farm influenced ales and lagers and using as local as possible. Try a beer cocktail and be sure to see the hops garden.
So many choices and so many flavors of Franklin Fresh foods, it may be a good idea to make it a two-day food tour.

Shippensburg Community Fair July 22 to July 28, 2018 is the 61st Annual Shippensburg Community Fair at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds, off Possum Hollow Road. It is the oldest bi-county fair in Pennsylvania, located both in Franklin and Cumberland Counties. Agriculture is the cornerstone of Franklin County’s past and certainly its present. The beauty and the balance of the county’s agricultural land is a prime reason people visit. Along with the open spaces and forest land, farm lands are the character of the county. The story of Michael Cromer, a Mercersburg man, dates back to 1857 and glimpses the efforts and expertise that makes Franklin County a stalwart of Pennsylvania agriculture.
In 2004, Stoner’s Dairy Farm held the first Harvest Farm Festival and has entertained children and families ever since. September begins corn maze weekends. Each year the 5-acre maze is a different experience. Over the years, Stoner’s Dairy Farm added haunted maze nights, flashlight maze nights, trick-or-treat nights, and even a cornhole tournament. Cromer was a master grain cradler, who could cradle ten acres of wheat in a day. Word spread and doubters emerged, so the Millard Scythe Company set a trial to determine his mastery. On July 12, 1858, the 30-year old, 6’3” tall, and 230-lb. Cromer began his task at sun-up and continued to work until sunset. Although a powerful thunderstorm took place in the afternoon, Cromer’s day of cradling was 365 dozen sheaves of wheat. In this era, a good day’s work of cutting wheat covered three to four acres and yielded 100 dozen of sheaves. In one day of work by Michael Cromer, he did the work of three-and-a-half men. When threshed, the wheat Cromer cradled yielded 262 bushels of grain, which required the work of four men over two days to bind the sheaves of the grain Cromer cradled. The Pennsylvania Agricultural Society secured the steel scythe as an artifact of the great feat of 1858.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY Just as a sleepy Punxsutawney Phil prepares to prognosticate the next six weeks of weather, Chambersburg is wide awake, and IceFest is in full-swing. The four-day event includes over seventy ice sculptures many backlit in wonderful color, giant statue carving, giant ice slide, a snowfall ball chili cook-off, a 5K race, ballet at the historic Capitol Theatre, art exhibit at the Council for the Arts, and photos in the giant ice throne. What is that sweet, buttery smell? Kettle corn…popped fresh and hot on Memorial Square. Downtown merchants extend store hours. So, if it gets chilly, duck inside, look around, and warm up. The third Saturday of April in Greencastle has two great back-to-back events. The Greencastle Pub Run starts the day. It offers a kids run, 5K or 10K. Greencastle Craft Beer & Wine Festival, 1 PM to 4 PM, features more than two dozen breweries and wineries and a special menu by John Allison Public House.

The last Saturday of April is Earth Day at Renfrew Park. The museum house is open and Renfrew Cultural Institute for Environmental Studies is sponsoring vendors, exhibits and entertainers throughout the day.
The Chambersburg First Friday event in June features Race Against Poverty, a race that benefits SCCAP, South Central Community Action Programs. JULY Walk Back In Time at Renfrew Museum & Park, 11 AM to 4 PM, takes visitors to colonial America on the third Saturday of July. Transport to colonial American and experience life on a Pennsylvania German farmstead. Summer Jubilee is a patriotic festival held each summer in Waynesboro PA to celebrate the 4th of July. On Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM, the streets of downtown Chambersburg transform into an old-fashioned street festival called Old Market Day with more than a hundred vendors of original arts and crafts plus a variety of food and entertainment. As Old Market Day comes to a close, time shifts to the Civil War era with living history, re-enactments, booksignings, civil war walking tours, a period fiddler, old-fashioned photos, and a kids area with fun and games, plus glow-in-the-dark face and body painting for kids and adults. At 7 PM, the final round of Acappella & Unplugged takes to the courthouse steps. September across the Cumberland Valley brings clear sunny days that are warm but not too warm. The focus returns to steam and gas engines on the third Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of September at the Two Top Ruritan Steam & Gas Show. Steam power demonstrations, crafts, food, and a parade of equipment are just some the activities that you will enjoy. Get fall off to a fantastic start at Stoner’s Dairy Farm for a special event on the first Saturday of October. You can enjoy the five-acre corn maze, pig race, magic show, pony rides, hayride, inflatable attractions, arena events, petting area, pumpkin judging, farm tours, scarecrow factory, family portraits, face painting, and games. With lots of delicious food like homemade ice cream, kettle popcorn, soups, sandwiches, and baked goods-you won’t go home hungry.
The last Saturday of September is Townfest in Mercersburg, 9 AM to 3 PM plus Mercersburg Beer & Wine Festival from 1-5 PM. Downtown Mercersburg is a treasure trove of American history with colonial American, Underground Railroad, and Civil War heritage. Pumpkin Fest, held the third Saturday of October, at Renfrew Museum and Park showcases the beauty of the 107-acre park on East Main Street in Waynesboro. Beautiful fall foliage, great pumpkin treats, scarecrow-making, and a pumpkin trebuchet to see how far a pumpkin flies!
Get into the holiday spirit. Try the Cocoa Crawl in downtown Chambersburg on the first Friday of December. The beautiful square of the county seat shimmers with beautiful lights. Holiday open houses in stores throughout the downtown and holiday music make this a special evening.
Whitetail Ski Resort offers a fantastic outdoor festival at the end of October, typically the fourth weekend. Come out to the Great Outdoors Festival at Whitetail and experience a different view from the chairlift. The breathtaking mountainside blazes with crimson, gold, and orange foliage.
