First Aid Tips by Nicola at Daisy First Aid Baby Choking One of the main reasons parents attend my classes is that they are worried about choking particularly if they are about to start weaning or have a young child who sticks everything into their mouth. Young children are at more risk of choking as they have narrower airways and so objects even soft ones can easily get stuck especially as they are still learning when to breath, chew, swallow and sometimes they get the order a little mixed up. There are food items and objects that pose more of a risk than others as their shape size and texture can block a child’s airway and be difficult to remove. Common items include grapes, lollipops, sausages, mini eggs, coins, nuts, marshmallows, coins, buttons and small toys. These food items should be prepared to reduce the chance of blockage such as slicing a grape length way into 4 or where appropriate avoided altogether or until they are older i.e. mini eggs or hardboiled sweets.

To reduce the chances of choking - Look at how their food is presented, is it appropriate to their age (size, shape and texture)? - Teach them to take appropriate size mouthfuls, - Encourage them to always sit when they are eating, - Reduce distraction where possible so they can concentrate on their meal, - Remove any household objects from your child’s reach. i.e., coins or small toys, - ALWAYS supervise them when eating.

Gagging v Choking: Babies have an overly sensitive gag reflex which is nature’s way of keeping them safe from choking. If your child is coughing and spluttering, they could have a partial blockage which means they are still breathing they just need to remove the item. Their skin can also turn red. This is GAGGING and effective coughing will usually remove the item quickly and so encourage your child to cough – DO NOT INTERVENE as you can make the situation worse. CHOKING is when your child’s airway is completely blocked, so they are often completely silent. They may look shocked and have a panicked look on their face plus their skin and gums may start to turn blue – YOU NEED TO ACT IMMEDIATELY.

If a baby (0-12 months) is choking you should - Encourage them to cough - Give up to 5 back blows - Give up to 5 chest thrusts - DIAL 999 as soon as possible - You can repeat the 5 x back blows and 5 x chest thrusts cycle until the blockage is removed or the child loses consciousness. If the baby is unconscious and not breathing move to CPR. Being able to act quickly and effectively in a choking situation makes all the difference. To practice this technique as well as the techniques for children over 12 months plus other relevant topics including CPR, accidental poisoning and head injuries book onto one of Daisy First Aid’s Family First Aid Classes.

The Benefits of Baby Swimming by Puddle Ducks The Benefits of Baby Swimming by Puddle Ducks As our friends at Puddle Ducks explain below, swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby! Babies have a real affinity with water (they spend nine months in the womb, after all!) and can be taken swimming from birth - you don’t need to wait until they have had their injections. Very young babies love the freedom, massage and gentle exercise that the water offers. The benefits to both parent and baby of swimming together are immense: - plenty of eye contact; - plenty of skin contact – it’s a wonderful way to bond with your baby; - helping you and your baby feel relaxed and confident in the water; - makes swimming a fun and socially stimulating activity (for both you and your baby!); - even parents who can’t swim can enjoy relaxing in the water with their baby. Baby swimming is an entirely safe and gentle activity but coming to classes often provides a parent with the necessary support to enable them to relax and enjoy the experience. There are further benefits too, especially if you join a fun, progressive class like those run by Puddle Ducks: - Only in the water, can a baby move freely and develop actions they wouldn’t otherwise be able to in their first year of life. This gives “swimming babies” the opportunity to develop crucial higher brain functions, core muscle development and co-ordination far earlier than they would otherwise be able to. - Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system, which again aids development of the brain. - Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns. - Learning to respond to key words (within a few months) can make your baby sharper mentally, increasing levels of awareness and understanding as well as improve communication between you. - Encouraging a baby to take regular exercise from such a young age is also an extremely healthy routine to instil which may prevent childhood lethargy. Most importantly of all, baby swimming should instil a love of water for the rest of your child’s life. There are many things to consider when taking a baby swimming for the first time but don’t be put off by the logistics! Here are a few hints and tips: - choose a clean and well-managed pool, ideally heated to over 30°C; - in a warm pool, your baby just needs to wear a disposable swim nappy (or a wrap and liners) with a neoprene swim-nappy over the top; - when your baby gets out of the water they will probably be cold, tired and hungry(!) so bring a hooded bath towel for them to the poolside, have a small toy to distract them in the changing room and milk or a healthy snack for when you get outside; - bring a changing mat (or extra towel); - finally, don’t forget to bring your own swimming costume/trunks and towel!

Razzamataz Students Shine on Stage Razzamataz Students Shine on Stage with West End Star Enthusiastic students from Razzamataz Theatre School Tonbridge got the incredible opportunity to open the show for Broadway and West End Musical Theatre Star ‘Kerry Ellis’. The 30 students aged 6-16 all attend Razzamataz Tonbridge, which is part of a national network of theatre schools across the UK. The lucky students, opened the stars show on stage with a fabulous vocal performance on stage at the stunning Igloo Theatre, at Tonbridge’s Castlemas Event in December. Kerry Ellis is widely acclaimed as one of the great British musical theatre performers, and known as ‘The First Lady of West End Musicals’ after appearing in many West End Shows. Most theatre fans will remember her for her amazing performance as ‘Elphaba’ in ‘Wicked’ in London and on Broadway. Razzamataz student Ellie Machin age 12 was ‘THRILLED’ to be invited to join the star on stage to sing a duet from ‘Wicked’!! Ellie, already a huge Kerry Ellis fan was quoted as saying ‘This opportunity has made all her dreams come true’. Razzamataz Tonbridge who, as network have previously worked with Kerry Ellis, were thrilled to receive the following message from the star herself: “The Razz team were brilliant and what a beautiful job they did … please give them all my love and hope we can do more together" “I’m incredibly proud of our students who joined us on stage,” says Eve Aston, Principal of Razzamtaz Tonbridge. “As well as delivering an amazing performance they behaved impeccably and we thank the organisers and the staff at ‘Castlemas’ and Bravo Productions for the opportunity. This was the boost the children needed after the previous year’s lockdown which left many students lacking in confidence. This totally made our year!!” Razzamataz have also received many glowing reviews form their parents: Mr D Smith wrote: I would like to thank you all In what you have done with my daughter, She never had any confidence to do what she did on Sunday night by going up on stage beforehand, Amber absolutely loves it at Razzamataz and we are so happy to have her there. Razzamataz Tonbridge is part of a network of over 50 schools and creates ‘triple threat performers’ meaning students leave being skilled in dance, drama and singing. During their time at Razzamataz, they will cover lots of different genres from classic West End musical theatre through to acting for camera, street dance and pop singing. There are lots of opportunities to perform both locally and on the West End stage and the school is proud to continually bring professionals into the school to work with students. The fun classes are for all children whatever their background or ability and there is a strong focus on keeping fit and active, having fun and making friends. Classes start at age four and go on to 18 and there are lots of opportunities to perform giving children the opportunity to grow in confidence. The Benefits of Martial Arts by Kirstie Andrews The Benefits of Martial Arts by Kirstie Andrews of Fortitude Taekwon-Do Tunbridge Wells & Southborough From the youngest Ninja (3yrs) to the young at heart, Martial Arts has numerous benefits. In Taekwon-Do, students learn good values by keeping 5 tenets in mind: - Courtesy - Integrity - Perseverance - Self-Control - Indomitable Spirit Courtesy is shown during training by bowing and treating all students and instructors with respect. Senior grades don’t command respect, they build it and earn it by setting a good example. The youngest Ninjas learn Self Control by sitting still and listening. The more senior students demonstrate it by keeping cool under pressure. During sparring drills, we maintain Self Control by pulling techniques thus preventing harm coming to our fellow students. We learn powerful and destructive techniques so Self Control is vitally important. One of the great things about Martial Arts is that it is very much goal driven. There is always a higher belt to aim for. Techniques can always be fine-tuned and honed. This encourages the student to persevere to improve their techniques and aim high. This also leads into Indomitable Spirit – encouraging the student to keep trying even when things seem impossible. Students soon discover that they can achieve far more than they imagined. Improved flexibility, strength and stamina boosts the confidence of students when they find themselves able to perform patterns and techniques that initially seem challenging without even thinking about them. Progress is rewarded with new belts once the student has reached the standard to move up to the next level. It’s been shown that practising patterns of movements can burn many calories and creates muscle memory. This in turn helps a student have an automatic reaction should they ever need to defend themselves. Taekwon-Do is classed as a Martial Art of Self Defence. We learn many defensive techniques, but also hone and perfect offensive techniques to be used if there is no other option. An individual works through prescribed patterns of movements mindfully perfecting techniques. This helps them forget about life outside the dojang (training hall) and improves focus and concentration. Martial Arts isn’t just about kicking and punching. A typical Taekwon-Do lesson can include cardio, pad work, techniques, self-defence, stretching, sparring, fun and games and more. A bonus of lessons including multiple different aspects is that students gain fitness, strength and flexibility whilst also increasing confidence. Young students benefit greatly too with: - Increased Co-ordination & Motor Skills - Greater Attention Span - Improved Confidence & Self Esteem - Channelling Energy in a Positive Way Games, exercises and a simple syllabus make it easy for little ones to gain the most out of Taekwon-Do based skills. With Martial Arts, there is so much to gain and the only thing to lose is weight and stress!
